Testimonials

Dear Anastacia, I would like to thank very much for what you've done. Everything was perfect. When we arrived in Nassau we found a very kind girl who helped us with bags and check in. We was able to take the earlier flight so at 1.30 we were already at the beach. Thank you again and again we're really satisfied of your job!

Hello Ms. Johnson,

We had a wonderful time at Rollezz Villa Resort! Mr & Mrs Rolle were exemplary hosts. Mr. Rolle met us at the airport and drove us back to the Villas, giving us a tour and short history of the island along the way. He made it a point to show us all the restaurants, grocery stores including the well-known regatta site, stating that he wanted us to know our options of food and entertainment choices as not to feel obligated to remain at the resort for meals and recreation. He repeatedly stated, "We want our guests to be happy!" and we definitely felt that way during our stay. The rooms were very clean, organized and beautifully decorated. The resort grounds were well landscaped and there was always a ground keeper on site maintaining everything. The beach directly in front of the resort was the most beautiful I had seen in the Bahamas. It was clean and isolated with beautiful clear water for swimming. Each guest was able to find their own spot on the beach and enjoy the tranquility for themselves. We also had several meals provided by the Rolles' at their seaside cafe on the premises. The food was hot, delicious and prepared in a timely manner. Mrs. Rolle served us with a smile and great conversation. The eating area was a covered deck which was decorated with rustic bistro tables and chairs and wicker patio lounge chairs. There was even an amenities fridge with drinks and snacks that was monitored by the honor system, everyone wrote their room number. A very nice trusting feature in this day in age We will definitely return to the Rollezz Resort the next time we are in Cat Island. It was a remarkably memorable experience!

  • How many people can the aircraft carry? C6-WET can carry up to 3 passengers, plus the pilot. In practice this usually translates into 2 passengers plus a few bags, or 2 adults and one child. Please don't be offended when we ask your weight(s) during the booking process. This is to ensure that we fly safe, within the weight limits of the aircraft. Your safety is our number one priority!
  • Is your seaplane safe? Absolutely! Our aircraft is regularly serviced and maintained to strict FAA and CAAB commercial standards, and undergoes rigorous daily, weekly, monthly and annual checks. Our pilots are highly trained, all with a minimum of 13,000 hours and 25 years+ of safe commercial flying experience under their belts. They absolutely will not compromise on safety, and are under no commercial pressure to fly if they think it isn't 100% safe to do so. When we say that your safety is our number one priority, we mean it! On occasion this means that we may have to cancel or divert your flight due to weather or other issues beyond our control. Rest assured that we do our best to avoid this, but when it does happen then we appreciate your understanding that it is for your safety.
  • When should I arrive at the airport? To ensure that your journey is a stress free experience, we advise that you arrive at Odyssey Aviation 30-40 minutes prior to your flight. The check-in area at Odyssey is fully airconditioned, and is a comfortable place to sit before your flight. Odyssey is situated on the south side of Nassau International Airport, and has plenty of safe parking available.
  • What can I expect before the flight? Once you arrive at Odyssey Aviation, you will be greeted by your Captain for the flight, who will brief you on the safety features of the aircraft. They will also give you details of the flight, and some of the sights that are to be seen en-route!
  • What attire should I wear? You can dress up or down as much as you like! The ideal would be shorts and a T-Shirt, as that makes the flight more comfortable for you. If your destination is a beach, or requires a water transfer, then we'd advise wearing flip-flops or sandals that can be easily removed.
  • Can I bring my own cooler/coolbag? Of course you can! There are size/weight restrictions, of course, but most standard coolbags/personal coolers will be fine. If you have particularly bulky/heavy items to transport, then please give us a call, or email us at [email protected] to discuss.
  • Can I bring my pet with me? Of course you can! Pets are very welcome on board our aircraft, and as dog owners ourselves, we are used to having furry friends fly with us! All we ask is for as much notice as possible, so that we can make sure we have everything in place to make the journey as stress free as possible, for both you and your pet.
  • Can I eat and drink in flight? As most of our flights are of fairly short duration, we usually ask that no food is consumed on board. Of course this is flexible though! Please ask your pilot on the day for guidance. Drinks may of course be consumed! Although we would encourage the use of closed lid cups, especially in the case of hot liquids such as coffee.

More About Bahamas

The city of Nassau and the popular tourist destination of Paradise Island are the most prominent attractions on New Providence Islands. Throughout its history, the Bahamas have withstood stopovers from sea-faring pirates, Spanish conquistadors, British Loyalists, Civil War-era blockade runners, and Prohibition rumrunners. Today, the largest stopover for visitors are the million cruise-ship passengers who arrive each year. For cruise guests, the attractions awaiting at Paradise Island are a popular shore excursion.

Sargassum/Seaweed Advisory

Sargassum is a free-floating seaweed that is especially prolific in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. While beneficial to ocean life, these large free-floating seaweed mats often wash up on beaches. The amount of seaweed on the beaches fluctuates based on the time of year and ocean currents. While resorts do their best to maintain the beaches for their guests, you may experience some inconvenience during your stay.

Top Experiences

Beaches : The beaches on Paradise Island draw visitors to their shores year-round. Other island beaches in Nassau offer a more laid-back experience.

Casinos : Explore the local gaming scene at one of the island's action-packed casinos.

Diving : The surrounding waters offer an underwater sculpture garden, the famous Lost Blue Hole, and other historic wrecks.

Downtown Nassau : Pastel buildings, historic Parliament Square, and open-air markets await visitors in downtown Nassau.

The Queen's 66 Steps : The Queen's staircase offers a direct trail from Fort Fincastle to central Nassau. This oasis draped in tropical plants, and a waterfall creates a captivating experience.

What To Do When Traveling To Nassau, Bahamas

Sandy beaches, blue skies, luxury resorts, and colorful cuisine are just a few of the endless offers when visiting Nassau, Bahamas, making it every vacationer's dream destination. This update refreshed the Nassau travel guide, expanding on fascinating things to do such as scuba diving to underwater sculpture parks, wandering through the 'Versailles of the Bahamas,' discovering historical forts and attractions, and so much more. Wanderlusters should read on to find all the info to bolster their ultimate Nassau, Bahamas travel guide.

Top Things To Do

Aside from the quintessential Bahamas vacation experience of spending the whole day at Nassau's most beautiful beaches , tourists will find a plethora of other activities and attractions with which to fill the rest of their getaway.

From relaxing to adventurous, there’s something amazing in and around Nassau for every type of traveler to experience.

For beach bums seeking further shores, stomach-growling foodies, curious history buffs, and binocular-and-camera-wielding wildlife enthusiasts, these are some of the best attractions in Nassau.

Visit Nassau's Beaches

Granted, there are around 17 picture-perfect paradise beaches in this part of the Bahamas, all of which are unique and beautiful in their own way.

However, with their powdery sands, vibrant blue ocean, and paradisiacal atmosphere, these five shores are notable tourist favorites, consistently ranking high among the top beaches in Nassau for visitors seeking sublime samples of sun, sand, and sea.

Junkanoo Beach

Junkanoo Festival in The Bahamas is one of the nation’s most energized parties, taking place around the new year annually. If visitors miss the event, Junkanoo Beach is the next best thing.

  • This entertaining beach always has something going on, which is excellent for the more eccentric beach bums seeking fun flair during their day by the sea — but not so ideal for folks in search of peace and quiet.

Visitors falling into the former category will have the time of their lives at this sunny spot, with its lively atmosphere and entertainment roster, as well as plenty of nearby places to grab excellent grub.

Cabbage Beach

No, there aren’t cabbages growing on this sunny shore, but there is almost every kind of water sport imaginable.

As one of the most popular beaches in The Bahamas (which enjoys a convenient location near Nassau Harbor), Cabbage promises a boatload of fun, from water-skiing and parasailing to jet-skiing, snorkeling, and so much more.

With all that water fun comes hungry bellies, and fortunately for calorie-starved beach bunnies, this spot boasts a lot of restaurants, bars, and shops.

Cable Beach

Cable Beach is always cited as one of the best beaches in Nassau. Clean shorelines, impeccable sand, and crystal-clear water make this beach a top-rated spot among residents and visitors alike.

Its tropical beauty isn’t the sole reason for its popularity, though; this beach is effortlessly close to many of the most upmarket resorts in the Bahamas, with the likes of Sandals Royal Bahamian, one of the most affordable Sandals Resorts , only a stone’s throw away.

Unsurprisingly, one of the world’s most romantic destinations features a lovely seaside spot with a name like 'Love Beach’.

Loved-up couples and honeymooners are known to kindle their romance and enjoy quality time together on this beautiful beach, with its pretty and private ambiance resulting from its superb location away from downtown Nassau’s popular beaches.

Jaws Beach earned its name after it appeared in the iconic Hollywood blockbuster movie Jaws . Given its fame, it can see a few more people than other beaches.

However, seeing what this legendary stretch of sand is like in real life, not on the big screen, is always a top activity in Nassau.

While it was a dramatic spot in the film, in reality, it’s another stunning Bahamas beach worthy of Instagram pics.

Swim With The Pigs In Nassau

There are many reasons to choose Exuma over Nassau , and swimming with pigs is one of them. Even though this activity is synonymous with Exuma, it still remains one of the best attractions Nassau has to offer its guests, as it’s still within reasonable proximity to the capital.

One of the closest pig-swimming options for those staying in Nassau is the Sandy Toes experience on the famous Rose Island on Exuma.

A true bucket list item, the famous swimming pigs of The Bahamas are absolutely adorable, melting the hearts of visitors with their hilarious personalities and cute piggy antics.

  • These creatures are indeed curious and full of awe for visitors, eagerly swimming up to arriving boats as people come to spend the day with these four-legged pink-and-brown-hued swimming island-dwellers.

Related: From Nassau To Exuma: Travel Options To Pig Beach

Many pigs even hang around humans on the beach and in the water in the hopes they’ll receive food gifts, which many Bahamas pig tour operators will recommend people bring.

The trip to see the Exuma pigs is also convenient; visitors take a powerboat from Nassau to the Exumas — a journey that takes only about an hour and a half each way.

  • Recommended Tour: Morning Pig Encounter - Pigs can’t fly, but they do swim!
  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Cost: From $199 USD per adult

Visit The Top Historical Attractions In Nassau

With all the best Paradise Island beaches, top Nassau restaurants, water activities, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences out of the way, it’s time to take a trip down memory lane and discover the historic sites in and around the Bahamian capital.

For those looking for unique things to do on Paradise Island, but who are tired of beaches, water parks, and island tours, the Bahamian island boasts a long and eventful history spanning many centuries, making visiting Nassau’s historical landmarks an enriching day itinerary.

From colonial times to pirating stories of the Caribbean, the following historic sites in Nassau are fascinating and will provide visitors with a glimpse into the country’s hefty history.

Find the best historical attractions when visiting Nassau below:

Witness The Queen’s Staircase & Fort Fincastle

The Queen’s Staircase — often referred to as ‘the 66 Steps’ — is held up by an interesting story. The stairs were carved out of solid limestone by slaves between 1793 and 1794, crafted to serve as a direct route to Nassau city from Fort Fincastle.

According to rumors and historical accounts, Queen Victoria of Britain once walked the steps, which were named in her honor.

Today, visitors can see the staircase and take photos of the site, where the encompassing vegetation creates a scenic backdrop.

At the top of the Queen’s Staircase is Fort Fincastle — indeed, one of the most impressive old forts in Nassau out of the main three, which also features replica canons.

  • Built in 1793, the stronghold was erected by a former governor of The Bahamas, Lord Dunmore.
  • Situated on Bennett’s Hill — the highest point in Nassau — the vistas from Fort Fincastle a worth the trip alone.

Explore Fort Charlotte

Sitting on 100 acres of land, Nassau’s Fort Charlotte was built in 1788 and houses all sorts of medieval features people normally only read about in history books and fantasy novels.

Think cannons, tunnels, and dungeons — which visitors get to see in real life — and this place delivers some impressive photo ops.

Hiring a local guide is a great way to visit Fort Charlotte when traveling to Nassau, and a guide can help ensure the grounds are open for exploring.

Montagu Beach & Fort

This is a public beach with a beautiful surrounding area full of things to do and see. The historic Fort Montagu is definitely worth a visit and costs around $2 or so per person for admission.

Once visitors have explored the fort, the nearby fish market is a fantastic (and tasty) experience, where fresh conch salads and droves of live conch are available for purchase.

  • Fort Montagu Entrance: $2 per person
  • Note: Cash only

Enjoy easy and free parking just outside Fort Montagu.

Waltz Through Parliament Square In Nassau

Parliament Square in The Bahamas is, quite possibly, one of the country’s most famous areas. Dotted with numerous of the island’s recognizable pink and white government buildings, this part of Nassau, with its Georgian architecture dating back to 1815, is indeed beautiful to the eyes.

Facilities of note include:

  • House of Assembly
  • Office of the Leader of the Opposition
  • Bahamas Supreme Court

Nassau’s Parliament Square is also home to a historical (and sizable) statue of Queen Victoria.

Discover The Beauty Of The ‘Versailles Gardens’ In Nassau

As mentioned earlier, The Versailles Gardens is a unique medieval garden and one of the best things to do on Paradise Island , if not the most interesting thing to do in The Bahamas, overflowing with rich flora and fauna and deep-rooted in history.

Also referred to as ‘the Paradise Island Cloisters’, this spectacular place is compared to the Versailles Gardens in Paris. The site’s twelfth-century monastery also sits within the ground, which guests are also welcome to explore.

Most visitors can wander Nassau's Versailles Gardens in anywhere from ten to twenty minutes, and it's an excellent stop for a stroll or snapping some lovely photos.

Visit The Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation

Located in Pompey Square in Downtown Nassau, the Pompey Museum may be small, but it contains a wealth of interesting exhibits and information on the country’s past, making it a great resource for people hoping to learn more about The Bahamas’ history.

  • Hours: Monday - Wednesday, Friday & Saturday 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM | Thursday, 9:30 AM - 1 PM | Closed Sundays
  • Entrance: $3 per adult
  • Location : Bay Street, in front of George Street

Check Out Clifton Heritage Park

Clifton Heritage Park in the Bahamas is a supreme choice for learning about the history and culture of the country while experiencing first-hand what made the place as it is today.

History, culture, nature, and beauty abound, possibly rendering the park one of the unique attractions in The Bahamas for visitors looking to learn about much of the country in one place.

The terrain comprises rocks, wetlands, and white sandy beaches, as well as the impressive ancient architecture of the Lucayan people, who were the very first inhabitants of The Bahamian Islands.

Even snorkeling is on the cards at this park; in fact, with its giant underwater sculptures (seriously, bring a camera), Clifton Heritage Park may be one of the best places to snorkel in the Bahamas in terms of uniqueness.

  • Snorkeling Tours: $90 per person
  • Duration: 45 minutes to one hour

Explore Bay Street In Downtown Nassau

Bay Street is one of the best places in Nassau for markets, architecture, and people-watching. Many local markets hustle and bustle, while the old buildings invite some beautiful photo opportunities.

Visitors will also find a few good spots to eat and enjoy a drink, too, with the above-mentioned Biggity being one of them.

Bay Street is about 6.5 miles long but is one of the few streets in Nassau with proper sidewalks bordering the street, making for a great stroll to take in all the colorful Bahamian chaos and shopping.

Shiver Ye Timbers At The Pirates of Nassau Museum

The pirate history of The Bahamas is always a topic of interest, even among folks not so history-inclined. Given The Bahamas once had the largest crop of pirates in the Caribbean, one of the most fascinating ways to learn about the islands’ illustrious pirating past is to check out the Pirates of Nassau Museum .

  • Hours: Monday - Friday, 9 AM - 5 PM | Saturdays & Sundays, 9 AM - 3 PM
  • Price: $14 per adult

Treasure troves of remarkable exhibitions and displays are housed within the establishment, divulging the fascinating stories of the country’s illegal maritime affairs that once posed huge problems for the Caribbean.

Guests can explore the site by themselves or enjoy a guided tour from an animated pirate, and when they’re done, they can check out the gift shop for some pirate-themed booty.

  • Best Time to Go to Nassau: November to April (peak tourist season, but the best weather)
  • Nassau Hurricane Season: June through November

Similar to many tropical islands in this portion of the planet, the summer is warm and humid and can see rainfall — albeit sporadic, mostly. Typically, hurricane season in Nassau runs from July to October, while the high tourist season spans from November to April.

Peak season usually sees the best weather in the Bahamas, with the sunniest, clearest skies and less chance of rain. It’s also windier during this time, making the tropical heat a little more bearable, thanks to a cooling breeze.

However, as with most peak tourist seasons, flights and hotel prices soar, and crowds are much denser.

A day in Nassau, Bahamas: What to do while your cruise is in port

High Angle View Of Cruise Ships Moored In Sea Against Blue Sky

Cruising and the Bahamas have gone hand in hand since modern cruising began in the 1970s. The first itineraries focused on three- and four-night Bahamas sailings from Miami. Today, seven-night and longer Caribbean itineraries often include a port call in Nassau.

The Bahamas is one of the industry's leading cruise port destinations, with the capital city of Nassau being one of the world's busiest ports of call.

Made up of 700 islands spread across 100,000 square miles of the North Atlantic Ocean, the Bahamas boasts some of the Caribbean's most beautiful, clear blue water, white and pink sand beaches, warm temperatures and attractions galore. Nassau is more than a cruise port on the 112-mile-long island of New Providence. It is also a vibrant metropolis filled with lots of diversions.

In the north, Paradise Island has large hotels and all-inclusive resorts that offer day packages for cruise visitors, providing access to premium golf (at the Baha Mar resort), casino gaming (at Atlantis Paradise Island Bahamas) and restaurants, shops and nightlife.

Not surprisingly, Nassau is a staple port of call for several cruise lines, including Azamara , Carnival Cruise Line , Celebrity Cruises , Disney Cruise Line , Holland America , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line , Oceania Cruises , Princess Cruises , Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Royal Caribbean and Virgin Voyages .

According to the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, in 2024, the Bahamas is expected to host 5.6 million cruise passengers. This figure exceeds the 5.4 million the port hosted in prepandemic 2019. Nassau's cruise port capacity increased from 20,000 passengers per day to more than 30,000 in May 2023, thanks to a $300 million renovation. The project expanded and revitalized the Prince George Wharf port and added a new berth, allowing it to accommodate six ships per day.

The Nassau cruise port now features a streamlined modern arrivals plaza that provides a smooth entry and exit. A new Nassau cruise excursion shop lets guests book everything from taxis to Atlantis tours in one spot. New attractions like the Museum of Junkanoo, more shops, restaurants and bars and an expansion of the iconic Straw Market provide a bevy of things to do at the Nassau cruise port. While the expanded port means more passengers in Nassau, the arrivals plaza and surrounding area are well-laid-out, spreading out crowds and creating a less frenetic atmosphere.

What we could do without

Nassau is on an island within a vast archipelago. Many products are necessarily imported, which means prices, including meals at restaurants, can be high. Nassau can also feel a bit "touristy" at times, as the Nassau Cruise Port at Prince George Wharf can host as many as six large cruise ships at once. On busy days, cruise travelers are ubiquitous around the downtown area. As with any busy destination, travelers should stay alert and be aware of their surroundings.

Nassau Cruise Port fast facts

Nassau is extremely popular as a warm-weather getaway destination that's closer to the U.S. Atlantic Coast than most Caribbean basin countries. As a plus, while technically not located in the Caribbean, Nassau and the Bahamas offer the same splendid sunny skies, brilliant azure waters and amazing culture and traditions.

On the small island of New Providence, Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas. The port is normally a bustling affair as disembarking guests walk from the pier to Bay Street, parallel to the water. The downtown shopping area is where you'll find tour guides and Jet Ski, beach and watersports excursion operators, taxis for hire, scooter rentals, craft and souvenir shops and hair braiders.

Nassau's nearby Paradise Island district offers beaches, restaurants and shops, as well as the Atlantis megaresort, which is among several properties offering day packages for cruisers seeking a daylong all-inclusive experience. The good news is that, with a little preparation, it will be easy to find the right Nassau activity to fit your personal vacation style.

Arrival details

Cruise ships visiting Nassau dock at the Nassau Cruise Port at Prince George Wharf, which is a short walking distance from Bay Street and the downtown district. Passengers who are booked on cruise line excursions will find providers staged in areas leading from the dock. Private operators, including those who booked tours with guests separate from the cruise line, will be found beyond the first group.

You can book taxis and tours upon disembarking at a clearly marked kiosk. If your ship is docked at one of the farther berths, it can be a long walk from your ship to the port exit. The port provides shuttles to the terminal building for passengers with mobility issues.

Time zone: The Bahamas operates on Eastern Standard Time.

Language: English is the official language.

Currency: The Bahamian dollar is equivalent to the U.S. dollar. Both are widely accepted and generally, it's not necessary to exchange money. If you want to exchange money, you can do so aboard your ship, although you can usually obtain a better rate at a local bank or ATM. Several banks are on Parliament Street, a short walk from the Nassau cruise terminal. Numerous ATMs are also around downtown.

Nassau's nearby private islands offer a premium beach experience within a 15- to 20-minute ferry ride. Most cruise lines offer shore excursions to Blue Lagoon Island, but travelers can also book a visit through a travel advisor or on their own online. The excursion is popular and often sells out, so reserve early in your voyage or prior to your cruise date.

At Blue Lagoon, cruisers can swim in a calm lagoon, enjoy kayaking, water-biking or snorkeling tours, play with water toys like floats and inner tubes or simply relax in a beach hammock under coconut palms. Blue Lagoon offers a gift shop, changing rooms, restrooms and shower facilities.

Balmoral Island, Pearl Island and Sandy Toes also offer private island experiences near Nassau.

Cruise travelers whose ships arrive early in Nassau may want to take the approximately one-hour drive to Stuart's Cove, where they can experience snorkeling, diving and swimming with sharks.

Historic sites

travel tour companies in nassau bahamas

Nassau's history is closely tied to the Caribbean pirate era of the 17th and 18th centuries. The town served as a pirate sanctuary until 1718 when British Governor Woodes Rogers expelled the buccaneers. Today, the downtown district offers 20 square blocks featuring architecture and monuments dating to this compelling era, most within walking distance of the cruise pier.

As a result, visitors can take a DIY approach to exploring Nassau or book a cruise ship excursion highlighting historic forts, Bahamian cuisine, "land and sea" programs, private island experiences and even Junkanoo-style music and dancing.

Historic sites near Prince George Wharf include Parliament Square, which hosts the House of Assembly, the Senate Building and the Supreme Court of the Bahamas in pink neo-Georgian buildings. A statue of Queen Victoria erected in the early 1900s also stands at the site.

Bahamian culture was also shaped by Africans who arrived in the territory as slaves from Sierra Leone and other West African nations. Others traveled to the Bahamas directly from Africa, Bermuda and Haiti — either enslaved by ex-British loyalists from Georgia and South Carolina or former soldiers who won their freedom fighting for the British during the American Revolutionary War.

Several historic sites around Nassau recognize this influence, including Adelaide, Fox Hill and Gambier. Liberated Africans settled these three historic villages in the 1800s and still maintain their African heritage. Cultural and sightseeing tours to these villages are available. Nassau's Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation features a permanent exhibit on the African experience in the Bahamas.

Don't miss the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. Housed in the lovely 1860s-era Villa Doyle, the museum showcases historic and contemporary Bahamian art throughout its four gallery spaces.

Best beaches near the Nassau Cruise Port

There's no shortage of great beaches in and around Nassau. In addition to the nearby private island beach experiences, several local beaches are within walking or short driving distance.

Junkanoo Beach

travel tour companies in nassau bahamas

Junkanoo Beach is about a 15-minute walk from the cruise port, offering travelers an inexpensive and convenient way to enjoy some sun and fun. You can normally see your cruise ship from the nearby beach, and vendors dotting the beach sell buckets of ice-cold Kalik and Sands beer (the local favorites). Don't forget to bring your towel; chairs are available for rent from vendors. Some will package a bucket of beer with chairs and an umbrella.

Cabbage Beach

Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island is a 20-minute walk or short taxi ride from Nassau, just over the bridge that spans the islands. Though beautiful, the waters are sometimes rough, and the beach does not offer many amenities. However, locals parade up and down the beach, offering chairs for rent and beverages for sale.

Cable Beach

travel tour companies in nassau bahamas

Cable Beach is about a 20-minute drive from Prince George's Wharf. Get there via local taxi or a cheaper alternative, the No.10 bus, which charges around $1.25 per person. The 2.5-mile-long beach is often described as Nassau's best, but it's one of hundreds across the Bahamas distinguished by bleach-white sands and remarkably clear blue waters. Cable Beach is home to several top Nassau resorts like Sandals Royal Bahamian and Margaritaville Beach Resort, which offer a full array of watersports activities. Cruise passengers can purchase day passes to enjoy resort amenities. Day passes for Sandals are $340 per person; Margaritaville at Sea day passes cost $110 (for adults) and $55 (for guests age 12 and under).

Other top Nassau beaches

Montague Beach is situated east of the Paradise Island Bridge and is home to a historic fort constructed in the 18th century. The beach promenade is a popular hangout on weekends and public holidays, with vendors offering delicious local food and drinks. The beach is also a preferred spot for wading and picnicking.

Delaporte Beach is west of Cable Beach, near the former plantation village of Delaporte. East of Nassau lies Saunders Beach, which is also popular with visitors and locals.

The beach at Goodman's Bay features recreational facilities for children and is popular among joggers and exercise enthusiasts. A small bridge connects Sandyport Beach to the Venice-like Sandyport resort development near Cable Beach.

How to get around on your own

On foot: Many of Nassau's historic sites and the Bay Street retail district are within walking distance of the cruise ship pier and the downtown area, and one of the most popular things to do is stroll around here. Bay Street is lined with shops, restaurants and bars, and cruisers who are so inclined can spend the day strolling the area. Just put on your sneakers, disembark your ship, take a few steps and start exploring.

By taxi: You can book a taxi at the arrivals area from a marked kiosk. Taxis are not metered, so always negotiate the fare before entering the vehicle.

By bus: Nassau's public buses are known as jitneys and offer a thrifty and convenient alternative to car rentals or taxis. The jitneys cost around $1.25 per person and stop at popular spots, including Cable Beach (see below).

Other transportation: There are also ferries to nearby attractions, and it's also possible to rent a car or motor scooter.

Nassau restaurants near the cruise port

Conch fritters Bahamas

True to its Caribbean traditions, the Bahamas' indigenous cuisine combines flavorful spices with fresh tropical fruit and seafood. Whether found at a lively outdoor market or gourmet restaurant, Bahamian gastronomy is filled with island flavor.

Visitors will find a variety of spots serving local favorites like conch fritters, bite-sized flakes of conch meat fried in batter seasoned with goat pepper, hot sauce and sea salt, plus common Bahamian vegetables. This Bahamian treat is the territory's undisputed favorite dish. Other traditional dishes worth trying include peas and rice (deep brown pigeon peas and white long-grain rice seasoned with tomatoes, onions, thyme, tomato paste, goat pepper and salted pork) and Johnny cakes, a dense and slightly sweet cake-like bread often served at breakfast.

A handful of Nassau food experiences — from casual to upscale — await visitors. For example, the Potter's Cay conch shacks are beneath the high-arching bridge that connects Nassau to Paradise Island. Adjacent to lively fruit markets, the brightly colored conch shacks feature nearly 40 chefs in different shacks cooking fresh conch dishes in myriad ways.

It's a great place to sample an authentic Bahamian lunch featuring the freshest conch fritters and local dishes. You can also interact with the chefs and other locals as they chat about the day's catch or argue over a game of dominoes.

Check first with a local or with a frequent Bahamas visitor (like a travel advisor) to determine which stall is the best for the day. With 25 years in the same location, McKenzie, a former conch fisherman turned restaurateur, is a local celebrity among Potter Cay purveyors, with a shack positioned as the first on the bridge's west end.

For a different Bahamas experience, head to Graycliff Hotel and Restaurant, about a 15-minute walk or a brief taxi ride from the cruise port. The restaurant is in Graycliff Hotel, a historic 18th-century mansion that was once the headquarters of a pirate, Captain John Howard Graysmith. Spend an afternoon exploring the property, which features an impressive heritage museum, chocolate-making and cigar-rolling facilities, art galleries and craft shops.

The highlight, however, may be the hotel's five-star Graycliff Restaurant, an elegant venue with a menu combining continental and Bahamian traditions. The sumptuous restaurant features four air-conditioned dining rooms and a garden dining area, with each room decorated to reflect Graycliff's origins as a private home. In keeping with its atmosphere, the "elegant casual" dress code is strictly enforced.

Nassau Cruise Port shopping

When shopping in the Bahamas, look for souvenirs like original paintings, wood carvings and craftwork and handmade garments in bright tropical colors. Nassau's Bay Street retail district is steps from the cruise ship dock, but there are a few hidden shopping spots just a short taxi ride away.

Virtually adjacent to the cruise port is Festival Place, an outdoor bazaar featuring 45 vendors selling crafts, food and drinks. It's ideal for folks seeking last-minute souvenirs and gifts just before they depart aboard their ship and for arriving passengers in search of shopping close to the port.

Once an open-air affair, Nassau's long-running Straw Market has been expanded into the new cruise port terminal. Its brightly hued stalls feature Bahamian gifts, crafts, souvenirs and unique Bahamian-designed clothing and art. Bay Street features a proliferation of high-end, designer stores selling luxury goods, including apparel, jewelry, cosmetics and fragrances.

You can also take a taxi to reach Nassau's best-kept secrets when it comes to handcrafted, original art and crafts, plus apparel and home goods. Near the corner of Ernest Street and Okra Hill, Bahama Hand Prints offers "bold and brilliant" designs across a wide range of garments, accessories and home furnishings. The shop was established in 1966 by artists Helen Astarita and Berta Sands. All products are developed in-house and crafted by the shop's talented sewing team. Visitors are encouraged to drop in at the factory, speak with the staff and watch the printers at work.

At Craft Cottage Bahamas, you can find locally made home decor, glassware, jewelry, soaps, clothing and artwork. On the grounds of the Doongalik Studios & Art Gallery in Eastern Nassau, the charming shop and gallery feature a diverse and eclectic array of Bahamian-inspired items and emphasize traditional crafting techniques.

The facility is housed in a traditional Bahamian-style home that shares the grounds with a variety of local Bahamian artists who also use the property to work on their own art and products. The shop offers an extensive and impressive array of handcrafted jewelry, painted glass, straw bags and accessories, including homemade soaps and bath products.

Free things to do in Nassau Cruise Port

If you don't want to spend any cash when you get to the Nassau cruise port, a handful of things to do in the Bahamian capital won't cost you a dime.

Since you are in the Bahamas, take advantage of the beach, a free activity. Junkanoo Beach is just a 15-minute walk from the cruise port. Bring a towel and a book and spend the day sunbathing and swimming in the clear, turquoise water for free.

The Queen's Staircase, or "66 Steps," is framed by lush gardens and links downtown Nassau with Fort Fincastle. Ascend to the top of the staircase to reach Fort Fincastle, constructed in the late 1700s atop Bennett's Hill. From there, enjoy sweeping views of downtown Nassau, the harbor and the cruise ship dock.

Nassau's historic district and Bay Street, which is filled with more shops, are also within walking distance of the port, and looking is always free.

Bottom line

Nassau sometimes gets a bad rap as a "touristy" port of call, and cruise travelers often inundate it. However, the Bahamas' capital city is a diverse port with an impressive array of historic attractions, varied beach experiences, distinctive cuisine and extensive shopping opportunities. Nassau's Caribbean flavor, warm temperatures and beautiful natural environment have made the port a staple on cruise itineraries.

Heading to the Bahamas? Here's what you should know about travel warning

Portrait of Cheryl McCloud

The  United States Department of State  has issued a  Level 2 travel advisory  for travelers heading to the Bahamas.

The advisory warns travelers to "exercise increased caution" due to crime, specifically on the islands of New Providence, which includes Nassau, and Grand Bahama, which includes Freeport.

There have been 18 murders in Nassau since Jan. 1, according to the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas.

"Murders have occurred at all hours, including in broad daylight on the streets.  Retaliatory gang violence has been the primary motive in 2024 murders," the embassy said.

Another travel advisory urges travelers to reconsider a trip to Jamaica.

The Level 3 travel advisory was issued due to crime and medical services.

"Violent crimes, such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides, are common. Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts," the department said.

Are there travel warnings for Bahamas?

Yes. The U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 2 travel advisory , urging visitors to use increased caution in the Bahamas due to crime.

"The majority of crime occurs on New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) islands. In Nassau, practice increased vigilance in the Over the Hill area (south of Shirley Street) where gang-on-gang violence has resulted in a high homicide rate primarily affecting the local population," the State Department said.

"Violent crime —  such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults —  occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas. Be vigilant when staying at short-term vacation rental properties where private security companies do not have a presence. "

The department also warned tourists about activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours since they are not consistently regulated.

"Watercraft may be poorly maintained, and some operators may not have safety certifications ... and injuries and fatalities have occurred."

If in the water, the U.S. Department of State warned people to be cautious of s harks since there have been fatal and non-fatal incidents involving sharks recently.

What is a 'Level 2 travel advisory'?

A level 2 travel advisory warns travelers to exercise increased caution, according to the U.S. Department of State.

"Be aware of heightened risks to safety and security.

"Alerts are used to notify U.S. citizens of specific events and changes happening locally, and as quickly as possible."

There are 4 levels of travel warnings. Here's what they mean

  • Level 1: Exercise normal precautions: This is the lowest advisory level for safety and security risk. There is some risk in any international travel.
  • Level 2: Exercise increased caution: Be aware of heightened risks to safety and security.
  • Level 3: Reconsider travel: Avoid travel due to serious risks to safety and security.
  • Level 4: Do not travel: This is the highest advisory level due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks.

Is there a Bahamas travel ban?

No, but as officials warned those who travel there, use caution and stay informed.

Where is the Bahamas and how can you get there?

The Bahamas  is a chain of more than 700 islands that stretch from southeast of Miami to east of West Palm Beach. You can get there by boat or plane.

It's also a popular destination of cruise ships.

A ferry goes from Fort Lauderdale to Freeport. The trip takes about 3 hours.

US Embassy, State Department offer these tips if you go to the Bahamas

  • Exercise extreme caution in the eastern part of New Providence Island (Nassau).
  • Use caution when walking or driving at night.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
  • Review your personal security plans.
  • If you decide to travel to The Bahamas,  do not answer your door at your hotel/residence unless you know who it is.

How Hurricane Ernesto Could Impact Your Travels

Image may contain Nature Outdoors Sea Water Shoreline Coast Boat Transportation Vehicle and Aerial View

Hurricane Ernesto, then a tropical storm, knocked out power for half of Puerto Rico on Wednesday and is moving toward Bermuda with increased strength.

A hurricane warning is currently in effect for the British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic Ocean. “Expect building swells and dangerous surf with rip currents to develop by Friday in advance of the onset of tropical storm to hurricane force winds,” the Bermuda Weather Service advisory reads.

While the storm is staying clear of the continental United States, the swell from Ernesto is likely to cause “cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions” at beaches along the East Coast of the US this weekend, the National Hurricane Center said in a public advisory on Thursday.

In Puerto Rico , tropical storm conditions have passed, according to a Thursday travel advisory from Discover Puerto Rico, the island’s Destination Marketing Organization. However, parts of Vieques, Culebra, and the eastern coast of Puerto Rico are still recovering from heavy rains, flash floods, and tropical winds. The Puerto Rico Ferry Service to Vieques and Culebra is suspended until later this week, when ocean conditions are expected to fully improve.

“Safety remains our top priority for travelers and residents, and visitors should avoid all bodies of water and areas prone to flooding, such as beaches and rivers,” the Discover Puerto Rico advisory continues. “Major airports are operating fully, but may experience interruptions or cancellations due to the storm's passing. Visitors currently in Puerto Rico or with upcoming travel plans should contact their airlines, travel providers, lodging operators, and local businesses directly to inquire about changes in operations and plans during the storm.”

As of late afternoon on August 15, nearly 86% of flights through San Juan ’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) were delayed, according to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company. Only one SJU flight was canceled. In Florida , Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) and Miami International Airport (MIA) saw delay rates of 88.35% and 91.11% respectively, while Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), and Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ ) saw 100% of flights delayed.

Several cruise ships have altered itineraries in the Caribbean this week in order to avoid the storm, listed below:

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Pride departed Baltimore and arrived in Bermuda on August 13, one day earlier than scheduled. Carnival Magic , which is sailing an Eastern Caribbean cruise from Miami , cancelled a visit to San Juan, Puerto Rico on Wednesday, Aug. 14. Instead, a visit to Nassau, Bahamas was added on Friday, Aug. 16. Two additional ships sailing Caribbean itineraries, Carnival Freedom and Mardi Gras, are being closely monitored for potential changes, but no changes have been made at this time, the cruise line said in a weather update .

Norwegian Cruise Line

Three Norwegian Cruise Line itineraries have also been modified as result of Hurricane Ernesto. “ Norwegian Breakaway ’s Aug. 11, 2024 Eastern Caribbean voyage has been modified to a Western Caribbean itinerary, and will now call to Roatan, Honduras; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; and our private resort-style destination, Harvest Caye, Belize,” a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line tells Condé Nast Traveler. “ Norwegian Sky ’s Aug. 12, 2024 Eastern Caribbean sailing was also replaced to sail to the same aforementioned Western Caribbean destinations as well as George Town, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Norwegian Joy ’s Aug. 11, 2024 sailing has also been adjusted, and it will arrive to Bermuda on Aug. 13, 2024, a day earlier than scheduled. The ship will [stay] overnight at the Royal Naval Dockyard for two days, however it will now depart on Aug. 16, 2024. We will continue to monitor the storm and update guests as needed.”
