dtac Celebrates Thailand Reopening by offering free sim, data, and calls with Thailand’s #1 Happy Tourist Sim

05 May 2022

5 May 2022 – As of 1 May, the Thai government has eased entry procedures for overseas tourists by rescinding the COVID – 19 Test & Go requirement. To support this significant and exciting step in the country’s economic recovery, dtac has launched new call packages for short-term tourists with unlimited high-speed connectivity and free same-network calls together with free 5G sim giveaway for any customers at airport channel. These offers, ranging from 3 to 90 days of usage, also include discounted overseas calls and free text chat on 5 apps to cater to a broad range of tourists. The packages are available now at dtac counters in Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok, as well as Phuket Airport.

dtac thailand tourist sim

Mr. How Lih Ren , Chief Marketing Officer, Total Access Communication PLC or dtac, said, “The government’s reopening of our borders from the beginning of May will definitely incentivize many more overseas tourists to come to Thailand. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) estimated that in 2022, Thailand will receive no less than 10 million overseas tourists, generating at least 500 billion Thai Baht in tourism revenue. The TAT has also set a target to welcome no less than 300,000 tourists per month between May and September.

As a connectivity service provider in Thailand, dtac is delighted to support the government’s tourism recovery target by welcoming overseas tourists and taking care of their connectivity needs. Our brand-new mobile packages aim to serve customers even better than before by taking into account recent changes in tourist behavior. For example, research between New Year and Q2 has shown that their trips are shorter than before, down to 3–15 days from a pre-pandemic average of 30 days. Moreover, Asians currently comprise a much higher percentage of overall tourism to Thailand. These tourists prefer unlimited data and high connectivity speeds at accessible price points. As such, dtac’s new packages enable overseas tourists to visit anywhere in Thailand with reliable high-speed internet for all.”

Best SIM Card In Thailand For Tourists: Cost To Buy And Mobile Networks

Thailand Travel Essentials

The good news is that buying a SIM card in Thailand is easy and relatively inexpensive. It is possible to visit Thailand without a SIM card, but if you plan to travel throughout the country on your own, then it might be a good idea to get one.

What is the best SIM card in Thailand for tourists? The best tourist SIM card in Thailand is AIS TRAVELLER SIM card. It costs 599 Baht, and it has unlimited internet for 15 days. Additionally, it offers 100 Baht free call bonus. AIS mobile network operator provides decent 4G availability everywhere in Thailand.

AIS is the biggest mobile network operator in Thailand, and it has the best mobile network coverage. But of course, there are alternatives to it.

Best Mobile Networks In Thailand

There are three mobile networks that operate in Thailand:

All of them has a very similar SIM card offers to tourists. The only noticeable difference is the 4G coverage – AIS and True Move are better compared to DTAC.

Other mobile network brands that are run either by AIS, True Move or a DTAC are Penguin SIM, Tune Talk, My and others.

How Much Does A SIM Card Cost In Thailand

Here are price and performance comparison for AIS, True Move and DTAC 15 day prepaid SIM cards.

AIS TRAVELLER SIM

  • 15 DAYS Unlimited Internet
  • 6GB Max Speed
  • 100 BAHT Free Call Credit

TRUE MOVE TOURIST SIM

  • 8GB Max Speed
  • 50 BAHT Free Call Credit

DTAC HAPPY TOURIST SIM

19.16 USD is 599 Baht, 16.96 EUR, 14.86 GBP.

Here is what Thai mobile networks have to offer for 7-day visitors to Thailand.

  • 8 DAYS Unlimited Internet
  • 3GB Max Speed

19.16 USD is 299 Baht, 8.46 EUR, 7.41 GBP.

Basically, all plans are the same.

There is one alternative to consider, and it is a 199 Baht 7-day unlimited interned (500MB max speed) SIM card from DTAC.

Where To Buy SIM Card In Thailand

Everywhere 🙂 If you’re in a hurry just grab one at the airport and you’re good to go, but if you’re willing to save a few bucks here are some options where to buy SIM card elsewhere:

  • Official provider store (AIS, TrueMove, DTAC)
  • 7-Eleven and FamilyMart
  • Various street vendors

Buying the SIM card at the airport is easy. You have to look for the companies selling the SIM cards. In both Bangkok International Airport and Don Mueang International Airport (also in Bangkok) the booths of companies that sell SIM cards are next to each other. You have to choose the shortest queue. When it is your turn, you will be asked for your ID.

Note that buying the SIM card somewhere elsewhere than in the airport will cost you less. So if you’re not in a hurry to start browsing it might be a good idea to get the card at any shopping mall or convenience store in Bangkok or elsewhere in Thailand.

It is a good idea to stick around SIM card selling booths to make sure your balance comes through. Once it’s there, you’re good to go.

Buying the SIM card in a retail store is the best option. First of all the variety of packages will be better compared to the tourist SIM card offers at the airport. Various SIM card prepaid packages are available at every 7-Eleven store in Thailand. And 7-Eleven’s are everywhere.

Note that most prepaid packages in 7-Eleven’s will be for the short term visitors.

The only downside to buying a SIM card in 7-Eleven is that there might be no one to help you with the activation of the SIM card.

What Documents Do You Need To Buy a Thai SIM card

You will need your passport if you buy the SIM card from the official resellers.

Street vendors do not pay attention to that, and you will be able to buy the SIM card from them without having a passport with you.

Thailand Travel Essentials Protip #1: When planning a trip to Thailand I recommend to prepare several copies of your passport. In Thailand, you will face situations where you will be asked to leave your passport at a hotel, scooter rental, etc. If you’re staying at a nice hotel most likely, everything will be fine. But it can be a different story with the small scooter, jet ski, bicycle, etc. One of the most common tourist scams in Thailand is to rent a damaged transport and to ask for extra cash on its return. Leaving a passport copy at transport rental will be safer in case someone will try to scam you.

Where To Buy SIM Card In Thailand Online

Technically it is possible to buy a SIM card online although there is no advantage in paying for it in advance.

An exception could be long lines waiting for the SIM cards at Klook booth in the airport. Pre-purchase fast tracks you through the line.

To buy a SIM card for Thailand online, you can do it in Klook’s online store. Klook is a trustworthy website, and most of its provided services and activities are confined mostly to Asia.

Google for Klook reviews online if you want to and then get your tourist SIM card HERE .

Here is what people have to say about it:

Great SIM card. Buying in advance saves the stress of finding a sim upon arriving in Thailand. —  kailin , klook.com
The 4G SIM card is extremely convenient to pick-up and use! The counter is easy to locate, and Klook staff is helpful with inserting the SIM card so we can use this immediately. —  Shu Xian , klook.com
Very fast service provided by local dtac staff. Easy and simple. Stable 4G connection and free 100 baht call credit. Will come back again if the deal still available in future. —  Du Hong , klook.com

Will my phone work in Thailand?

Before going to Thailand, you should check with your mobile network operator either your phone is locked to it or not. If your phone is locked to a specific operator, you won’t be able to use it with a Thai SIM card.

If your phone appears to be locked you have two options on how to use the mobile phone in Thailand:

  • Ask your operator for services while traveling outside your country
  • Buy a cheap phone when in Thailand

Every large mobile operator has to have a specific plan for travelers. Most likely these offers will cost a lot.

If you believe that you can travel without worrying that people won’t be able to reach you to your current phone number the most convenient way how to use a mobile phone is Thailand is to have an unlocked phone and a Thai SIM card.

If you have no other options than to travel to Thailand with a locked phone then maybe it is worth buying a cheap phone and a Thai SIM card when in Thailand.

Should You Get A SIM Card

When I traveled to Thailand for the first time, I did it without a local SIM card. Of course, I had situations when I wished I would have a SIM card, but I managed to get around by downloading maps while in the hotel or at a bar or restaurant. I think it was okay not to have a SIM card with me because that way I used my cellphone lesser than I usually would.

I would recommend getting a Thai SIM card if you’re planning to get around by scooter or a car, because if you will get lost it will be easier to find a way back. As locals and especially in more remote areas don’t speak English, it will be easier to use a navigation app.

All hotels and Airbnb’s in Thailand has good Wi-Fi and if your destination in Thailand is Phuket and the islands around it I would say you don’t need a tourist SIM card at all.

Related Questions

Does Thailand have 4G? Yes, all the Thai mobile network operators provide 4G. Its availability throughout the country is good, but the speed could be better. I did a quick research, and apparently, its average speed is 9,60Mbps while the average 4G speed in the world is 16,9Mbps. By looking at numbers, the difference is enormous although in real life it feels okay and I’ve never felt annoyed by its speed.

Does AT&T work in Thailand? There is no AT&T in Thailand, but you can use its International Day Pass service. It will cost you $10 per day, but if you want to be reachable on your US number, it is the only option.

You can read more about on AT&T’s website  HERE .

Will my Verizon phone work in Thailand? First, you have to find out either your phone is locked or not by calling to Verizon. If your phone is locked to Verizon, you won’t be able to use your phone with a Thai SIM card. Verizon has similar service to AT&T, and it is called TravelPass. It also costs $10 per day.

You can buy a Thai SIM card at the AIS office for 50B. Then pick the unlimited 10MBPS plan for just $6/month. They do it all at the store! It’s this package: max. 10 Mbps: 200 THB, activation: *777*968*306650#

On our multiple trips to Thailand, we have tried and tested the different options of Thailand SIMs and eSIMs to know which to recommend and which not.

So in this article, we’ll cover all the essentials you need to know about before buying a SIM card or eSIM package in Thailand.

Why you should get a Thailand SIM card

While WiFi is widely available in Thailand , in your hotel, hostel, or resort, and almost all cafes and restaurants, getting a local Thailand SIM card is the way to go for a comfortable trip.

The most significant benefit of buying a Thailand SIM card package is comfortably using ride-hailing apps like Grab (Uber), Google Maps for navigation, and Google Translate.

And while it’s true that most locals and businesses in Thailand use apps like WhatsApp and LINE for communicating, having a local number has proven helpful for us.

Since you’re reading this blog, we assume you’re not in the group that wants to explore Thailand while being “offline.” (nothing against those people – respect!)

Need reliable Travel Insurance for Thailand?

With 24/7 worldwide assistance,  Heymondo insurance  includes comprehensive coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellations, and baggage loss or delay.

For digital nomads or full-time travelers , we recommend SafetyWing , which includes brief visits to your home country every 3 months abroad.

Should you get a physical SIM or eSIM for Thailand?

For the last few years, it’s very common for most people to have phones supporting eSIM technology.

Buying a Thailand eSIM is the most hassle-free option, as you simply buy it online, scan the QR code you receive and install it on your phone in minutes—no need to go to any store or mess around with it at the airport.

So if your phone supports eSIMs, there’s no reason not to get one.

eSIM Compatibility

Click here to check if your phone supports eSIMs.

We are big supporters of the eSIM technology and have had it since we got a phone that supported it a few years ago.

Note: Many Thailand eSIM packages you can find online don’t come with any text or calls. However, our favorite, Thailandesim , does have packages that include them.

But that’s also the case with some of the standard SIM packages at the airport. Most only give you data.

So if you need calls and texts, just make sure your plan includes it (we will recommend the best packages below).

Which Thailand mobile carrier is the best?

There are four major mobile carriers in Thailand, with the two best networks being AIS and DTAC, and right behind being TrueMove , with still great coverage, excellent internet speed, and more affordable plans.

The internet coverage and speeds in Thailand are amazing, even 5G. So any of the top carriers will perform well all over the country. And if you want the clearest picture of each carrier’s coverage in Thailand, check out the practical nPerf coverage map .

AIS is the mobile carrier with the best coverage in Thailand and the most expensive packages. However, it’s the best choice for travelers who want the ultimate coverage and the most reliable service.

DTAC has the second-best coverage in Thailand and, in addition to AIS, is the best choice for great coverage.

And DTAC also offers the famous Happy Tourist SIM Card package, which you can find all over Thailand or buy it online on Airalo .

3. TrueMove

We’ve used TrueMove the most and have had great coverage throughout Thailand , with fast internet speeds, even when we hot-spotted it for work on our laptops.

The ONE time where we would have needed to have AIS with better coverage was during our stay on the Floating Bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok (AIS was the only one with signal).

TrueMove has the third-best coverage but offers many plans with high internet speeds. And that’s why it’s an excellent choice for most travelers.

Where to buy your Thailand SIM card

The three most common ways to buy your Thailand SIM card are at the airport, online, or at one of the official mobile carrier stores in Bangkok , Chiang Mai , Phuket , Krabi , or any other city.

1. Buy a physical Thailand SIM card at the airport

The simplest way to buy your physical Thailand SIM card is upon your arrival at the airport.

All Thailand airports are full of kiosks selling Thailand SIM card packages from operators like TrueMove, DTAC, and AIS.

Just walk up to the kiosk, and you will get your Thailand SIM card installed and ready to go in minutes.

We highly recommend comparing packages of at least two kiosks to find the best deal, as they don’t always offer the same packages or prices. And while some have better deals for shorter periods, some have better deals for longer trips.

Do note, though, that mobile packages at Thailand airports are more expensive than at official stores or online.

dtac thailand tourist sim

Note:  Please note that to buy a physical SIM card, you need a passport, as they will have to register the package in your name, as is the official requirement. This is not required if you buy an eSIM online .

2. Buy your Thailand eSIM online

It’s straightforward to buy a Thailand eSIM online and activate it in a matter of minutes.

Getting an eSIM online is especially smart if you’re entering Thailand by land border from Cambodia , Laos, or Malaysia . If you’re on an organized bus trip, you usually don’t have enough time to sort your SIM at the border.

And, of course, having a pre-installed eSIM when arriving by plane in Thailand means that you’re online as soon as you land.

We’ve been following the providers of Thailand eSIMs since they started offering them and have compiled a list of the best ones below.

Thailandesim - best eSIM marketplace for Thailand travelers and tourists

Thailandesim

Affordable, Best choice for unlimited plans

Airalo - best eSIM marketplace for Thailand travelers and tourists

Affordable for short and long trips

SimOptions - best eSIM marketplace for Thailand travelers and tourists

Great selection of eSIM and prepaid SIM plans

Holafly - best eSIM marketplace for Thailand travelers and tourists

Unlimited data packages for longer periods

Our personal recommendation is to buy an eSIM from Thailandesim , because they offer the biggest selection of plans, local or regional, which are also the most affordable on the market, and even offer a local phone number.

  • plans for 3, 5, 7, 8, 15 days
  • unlimited data or fixed data packages
  • local Thailand and regional plans
  • calls & text available (local number)
  • data sharing (hotspot)

>> Check packages 5% off with code SHIPPEDAWAY

Airalo is the second-best Thailand eSIM retailer, with a few options of local packages, in addition to regional Asia packages.

  • unlimited data
  • plans for 10 and 15 days

>> Check packages $3 off 1st order with code MATEJ1033

Much like Airalo, SimOptions offers a great selection of eSIM plans, but in addition provides the service of getting a prepaid SIM card package.

  • plans for 7, 10, 30 days

>> Check packages

Holafly is the most expensive Thailand eSIM retailer, but they are great if you want an unlimited data package for longer periods.

  • plans for 5, 7, 10, 15, 30, 60, 90 days
  • data sharing not available (hotspot)

3. Order your physical Thailand SIM online

You can order your Thailand SIM card online and pick it up at Thailand or nearby airports or get it delivered to your home address. This way, you get a much better deal than buying it directly at the airport, and you get to skip the line.

The Thailand SIM card pick-up options are great , but the delivery options are currently a bit limited. We could only find reliable options for China and Vietnam.

Please let us know if you find any more options for delivery of Thailand SIM. We would love to update this guide and let others know about it.

Best options for buying a physical Thailand SIM online:

4. Buy your Thailand SIM card at the official store

You can buy your Thailand SIM card at one of the official stores of mobile carriers across all cities.

Buying your package at the official carrier store of TrueMove, AIS, and DTAC can get you better deals than at airports or smaller reseller shops.

Stay protected on public WiFi

We’ve been using NordVPN for over 5 years now and can highly recommend the tool for protecting your privacy and freedom while browsing the internet.

It encrypts your connection and hides your data from potential hackers . Also, with a VPN, you can access blocked/restricted content like some Netflix movies or booking sites.

How much does a Thailand SIM card package cost?

Thailand SIM Card packages are affordable and cost upwards of 4 USD for a smaller amount of data and about 10 USD for an excellent data package with text and calls included.

Mobile data packages often change names, and what they offer, so we won’t discuss each carrier’s packages. But we will give you a reliable estimated cost of a Thailand mobile package.

Please note that the prices and packages at Thailand airports can be different and often higher than what you would pay at the carrier’s store.

MORE OPTIONS

Do you get calls and texts on your Thailand SIM card package?

Most Thailand SIM card packages you can buy at the airport come with a good amount of calls and texts.

You can also top-up some money to your account and get extra calls and texts if the package you bought doesn’t include them. Calls in Thailand cost about 1 Baht per minute, and texting costs about 2 Baht per SMS.

Our recommended provider Thailandesim , also includes calls and texts with a local number in most of their eSIM packages.

How to top up your prepaid Thailand SIM package?

Topping up your Thailand mobile package is simple in almost every convenience store, like 7-Eleven.

Often, these stores have dedicated systems where you just provide them with your phone number, and they top up how much you want to your account. And if they don’t have that system, you will receive a code on your receipt that you use/call to top up.

Finally, you can buy top-up vouchers or scratch cards and simply use the codes to top up.

And don’t forget that all carriers offer mobile apps where you can register your SIM, top-up your credit, change your plan or buy add-ons.

I followed this article and bought 2. DTAC.

They have 8 minute youtube videos for installation guide it’s hell long.

Also nowhere in the process did they warn that activation policy says it starts counting on installation, and i installed it when my holiday is far out and the plan will be expired in the middle of my holiday, very bad.

The youtube also made it seem like there are 2 setup steps, one done locally before going, and other when reach destination. It misleads people into thinking the local step can be done first, and user can choose to do 2nd phase when arrive. But they actually start counting when installed locally.

Good to warn in this article.

Thanks for this review of DTAC! We’ll make sure to include this information in the article.

Happy travels!

Introduction to eSIM in Thailand

Table of Contents

As of October 2019, eSIMs are available in Thailand from the following carriers: Dtac, AIS, and TrueMove H. eSIM stands for “ embedded SIM ” and is a physical SIM card that is embedded into your device. This means that you no longer need a physical SIM card to insert into your phone in order to get service.

eSIMs have been around for a while, but they’ve only recently become available in Thailand. If you’re thinking about getting an eSIM for your time in Thailand, here’s what you need to know.

Dtac esim Tourist is an unlimited data plan that’s specifically designed for tourists. It costs 1,500 THB (approximately $50 USD) and includes unlimited data for 30 days. You can purchase it online or at any Dtac store.

esim thailand

AIS also offers an unlimited data plan for tourists called AIS Traveler Sim 4G/3G Super Combo. It costs 1,690 THB (approximately $55 USD) and includes unlimited data for 30 days. You can purchase it online or at any AIS store.

TrueMove H has a similar offering called the TrueTourist Unlimited Data sim card. It costs 1,499 THB (approximately $49 USD) and includes unlimited data for 30 days. You can purchase it online or at any TrueMove H store.

How to Setup and Activate eSIM Thailand

Dtac Tourist is a new eSIM service from Thailand that offers unlimited data access for tourists. If you’re traveling to Thailand, you should consider Dtac Tourist for your eSIM needs. Here’s how to set it up and activate it:

Price Plan Comparison: Xplori v Frewie v Dtac Esim Tourist

If you’re thinking about getting a local eSIM for Thailand, there are three main operators to choose from: Xplori, Frewie, and Dtac Esim Tourist. In this article, we’ll be comparing the three on price, data allowances, and other features to help you decide which is right for you.

Starting with price, Xplori offers the most competitive rates for both data and voice calls. For example, their 1GB data plan costs just THB 29/day , while Dtac’s equivalent costs THB 50/day. When it comes to voice calls, Xplori again has the edge with their free incoming calls on all plans – something that neither Frewie nor Dtac offer.

Data allowances are where things get a little more complicated. Frewie offers the most generous data allowance of the three at 8GB per day – twice that of both Xplori and Dtac. However, this comes at a premium price of THB 79/day. If you’re not planning on using that much data then Xplori’s 1GB or 2GB plans could be a better option.

Finally, let’s take a look at some of the other features on offer from each operator. All three support eSIM-compatible devices such as the iPhone XS/XR/11 and Google Pixel 3/3a/4 (XL), but only Dtac offers an unlimited day

Other alternatives available for unlimited data access in Thailand

If you’re not interested in using an eSIM or if your device isn’t compatible, there are other unlimited data plans available in Thailand.

AIS offers a tourist SIM card that comes with either 7 or 14 days of unlimited data for 490 baht (about US$15). This SIM can be purchased at any AIS shop or authorized reseller, and activated without needing a Thai ID.

TrueMove H also has a “true you” tourist SIM that ca n be bought without a Thai ID, and comes with 3GB of high-speed data for 7 days, plus unlimited social media usage. It costs 590 baht (about US$18).

For those who will be in Thailand for a longer period of time, MyBy Cat prepaid SIM cards offer 30 days of unlimited data for 1,990 baht (about US$62). These SIMs can be bought online or at any True Move H shop.

Are you familiar with eSIMs? They’re the next step in digital SIM cards, and they’re becoming increasingly popular around the world.

If you’re not familiar with eSIMs, they’re essentially virtual SIM cards that are stored on your devices, rather than in a physical card form. This means that you can easily activate or deactivate them as needed, without having to go through the hassle of getting a new physical SIM card each time.

eSIMs have been available in Thailand for a while now, but they’ve only recently become widely available with the introduction of the Dtac Esim Tourist plan. T

his plan is designed specifically for tourists, and it offers unlimited data access at a very reasonable price. If you’re planning a trip to Thailand, then you should definitely consider getting a Dtac Esim Tourist plan. Here are some of the main benefits:

-You don’t need to worry about running out of data . With an unlimited data allowance, you can use your devices as much as you want without having to worry about racking up huge bills.

-It’s very easy to get started with the Dtac Esim Tourist plan. All you need is a compatible device and an active eSIM profile. Once you have those things, you can simply activate the plan and start using it right away. There’s no need to

eSIM for Thailand is the new way to enjoy unlimited data access when travelling in the country. Dtac esim tourist is a great option for tourists who want to stay connecte d without having to worry about roaming fees or contracts.

It comes with ample storage and generous data allocations, so you’ll never have to worry about running out of internet access during your trip. Give it a try – we think you won’t be disappointed!

This is the Best Travel eSIM for Thailand!? [My review on dtac Tourist eSIM]

In-depth article on possibly the most cost-effective and reliable eSIM for travel in Thailand.

shuhei

Thailand, one of the world's top tourist destinations, attracts countless travelers each year. As "travel eSIMs" gain rapid popularity among international tourists, the options for prepaid eSIMs for travelers to Thailand have significantly increased in the last couple of yers.

However, with more choices available, it can become challenging to decide which eSIM to choose.

That’s exactly why I took the time to carefully research and hand-pick one of the most promising eSIM options tailored for travelers visiting Thailand 🇹🇭, tested locally, and compiled the information in this article.

If you are planning to travel or go on a business trip to Thailand and are considering using an eSIM for mobile internet (which you definitely should), I hope this article proves useful.

The travel eSIMs featured in this article are hand-picked from the travel eSIM comparison website "eSIMDB" . There are many other eSIMs and data plans available on eSIMDB, so be sure to check them out 👇 before you make the final decision.

dtac Happy Tourist eSIM Overview

One of the major Thai telecoms, dtac, offers a tourist SIM card called Happy Tourist SIM , and they have an eSIM version of that which provides incredible value for money, making it my No.1 recommended eSIM for Thailand.

The physical SIM card version has been a popular tourist SIM for a long time, and is sold at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), Don Mueang Airport (DMK), Phuket Airport, Chiang Rai Airport, and other airports. This Happy Tourist SIM from dtac is likely one of the most purchased tourist SIM cards in Thailand (definitely top 3 in my opinion).

While the AIS " SIM2Fly " is another well-known SIM brand for Thai travel, dtac's Happy Tourist SIM offers better value.

I'll cover the actual connectivity quality in a later section, but so far, this eSIM version seems to be arguably the best travel eSIM option available in Thailand .

*However, if you'll be traveling to quite remote areas within Thailand, I'd recommend checking dtac's service area (cellular coverage) first.

Plans and Prices for Happy Tourist eSIM

*The plans and pricing information is current as of the time of writing. Prices may be cheaper during promotions, etc. and additional plan options could be introduced.

While there used to be only 2 plans available, the dtac official product page for tourist now lists 6 plans.

They can be grouped into the following two types:

  • dtac Happy Tourist Infinite SIM (New unlimited plan)
  • dtac Happy Tourist SIM

Both types include a Thai phone number (+66) and allows you to make calls and send SMS, which is a strong selling point in my opinion. And of course, eSIM version is available for both types.

Happy Tourist Infinite SIM

dtac thailand tourist sim

Simply put, this type comes with unlimited mobile data and unlimited calls within Thailand.

There are 3 plans available based on the number of valid days. The details are summarized in the table below.

*All available in eSIM version.

As you can see in the table above, aside from the validity and prices, the plan details are exactly the same.

The official selling price is 449 - 1,199 THB, but each reseller sets their own price. Will explain it the Where and how to buy section.

Happy Tourist SIM

dtac thailand tourist sim

This is the original, standard Happy Tourist SIM. It's more affordable than the Infinite plans, and personally, I recommend this one more.

There are 3 plans available based on the data allowance and valid period:

*Calls to dtac numbers are free.

*While dtac WiFi access isn't explicitly mentioned, I was able to use it in Bangkok. So it seems dtac WiFi usage is also unlimited.

Among these, I personally recommend the "50GB / 10 Days" plan . Here are the benefits of the 50GB plan:

✅ Even if you use up 50GB of data, you can still use unlimited data at a reduced speed (normally 384kbps, but promotions sometimes increase it to 15Mbps)

✅ Unlimited calls to dtac numbers

✅ Up to 100 minutes of free calls to non-dtac numbers within Thailand

✅ Unlimited chat on 5 messaging apps like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp

✅ Unlimited dtac WiFi usage

If you think you'll use over 50GB in 10 days, then of course you should consider the unlimited plans, but normally, I don't think most people use 5GB per day, so 50GB should be more than enough.

Also, having up to 100 minutes of free calls (to non-dtac numbers) for 10 days is plenty for normal tourism purposes.

So there are hardly any downsides to this plan.

The only drawback I can think of is the 10-day validity period. If you're staying in Thailand for more than 10 days, you could either choose the (pricier) 30-day unlimited plan, or just buy multiple 50GB plans. Alternatively, some of the other eSIMs you can find on eSIMDB might fit your needs and itinerary better.

Where and How to Buy It (My Recommendations)

While it seems like this eSIM can now be purchased directly from dtac's official website (which wasn't possible before), the process was terrible when I tried, requiring passport or ID upload and getting stuck midway.

dtac thailand tourist sim

So personally, I recommend purchasing from one of dtac's official reseller partners instead. It's not only easier but also tends to be cheaper .

The number of reseller partners has been increasing, and currently there are 8 companies listed on the official website. Of course, regardless of where you buy it from, the eSIM itself is the same.

Recommended Reseller No.1: Nomad

Nomad undoubtedly offers one of the best user experiences when it comes to travel eSIMs. Sometimes the number of their offerings can be a bit overwhelming, but they are usually very affordable.

dtac thailand tourist sim

On Nomad, the 50GB / 10 Days plan is $8.

Plus, using the promo code " ESIMDB3 " gives you a $3 discount . The code can only be used once, but if it works for you, this could be the cheapest way to buy one.

Both their website and mobile app have a simple design, and the purchase process is very straightforward.

Again, use "ESIMDB3" to get $3 OFF.

Recommended Reseller No.2: Airalo

Airalo , arguably the most well-known brand in the travel eSIM industry, is also one of the recommended partners for purchasing the dtac Happy Tourist eSIM.

dtac thailand tourist sim

The sale prices on Airalo are:

  • 50GB / 10 Days : $9.90
  • Unlimited 15 Days : $19.95

Additionally, using the promo code " ESIMDB10 " gives you a 10% discount on the purchase amount.

With this discount, the 50GB plan comes to under $9, which is probably cheaper than buying from the official website.

I've personally used Airalo many times before and considering online payments, they're more trustworthy than dtac's official site.

Other Reseller Options

The pricing for dtac's eSIM is essentially open, so each reseller sets their own prices for sales. So you might be able to find somewhere selling it cheaper than Nomad or Airalo.

Here are some resellers with relatively low prices, generally speaking.

eSIMX is a relatively new player in the travel eSIM market, but they prices are very competitive.

On their Thailand eSIM page , make sure to select " VOICE, DATA, SMS " tab.

dtac thailand tourist sim

The 50GB plan is sold at $8.27. And using the promo code " ESIMDB10 " gives you an additional 10% OFF , bringing it under $8.

MobiMatter is another company / website selling the dtac Happy Tourist eSIM.

dtac thailand tourist sim

MobiMatter has very competitive prices in general, typically cheaper than most of the official resellers.

15GB / 8 Days plan is currently sold at $7.99 on their site.

Installing eSIM

This time, I bought a Happy Tourist eSIM 50GB Plan from Nomad . And they sent me a QR code to install eSIM right after the purchase is complete.

  • How to install eSIM on iPhone with QR code

Installing / activating an eSIM on your phone is a straightforward process and should complete in a minute or two. Just tap, tap, tap, and done.

dtac thailand tourist sim

Once it's installed, it probably shows " Activating... " but it's normal if you are outside of Thailand.

dtac thailand tourist sim

Whenever you install a prepaid / travel eSIM, I highly recommend updating the Cellular Plan Label to easily identify the eSIM and distinguish it from other cellular plans on your phone. I usually do so with a country flag emoji to make it even easier to spot.

dtac thailand tourist sim

I successfully installed the eSIM on my iPhone 15 Pro the day before my trip. (FYI, the plan validity starts from this point). It's generally recommended to install pior to the trip.

Testing in Bangkok

  • The connectivity / speed tests were conducted in Bangkok and its surrounding tourist areas.
  • Tested in May 2024

After arriving at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), I turned on the dtac Happy Tourist eSIM, set it for Cellular Data, and I was able to connect to the internet within seconds.

As expected, local eSIMs seem to connect quickly. No Data Roaming or other settings were necessary.

In Bangkok, I was connected to dtac's 5G almost the entire time. (Occasionally on 4G.)

dtac thailand tourist sim

For some reason, the carrier display name is the rather long " dtac.Better Together ".

Speed Tests

From left to right are the speed test results near Phrom Phong BTS Station, around Terminal 21, and at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

dtac thailand tourist sim

Being a local eSIM, the Ping is good at around 30 ms. Both download and upload speeds are quite satisfactory too considering it's a prepaid travel eSIM. (Not comparable to the 5G experience you'd get in developed countries though.)

There were times when the speed temporarily dropped, but overall the speeds were as good as I expected it to be at least. I never experienced any noticeable packet congestion.

In addition to Bangkok, I also stayed in Hua Hin for a few days. There were no issues with signal conditions there too, and I was able to use mobile internet comfortably the entire time.

I also used tethering (internet sharing) quite heavily, but this too worked without any problems.

How to Check Data Balance and Plan Expiry Date

Unfortunately, checking data balance for dtac's Happy Tourist eSIM is a bit troublesome.

You need to access the following dtac webpage, click the "Check balance, Top-up and Add-On Package" at the bottom of the page, enter your phone number, receive a one-time password (OTP) via SMS.

dtac thailand tourist sim

As for the call credit balance and plan expiration date, you can check by dialing the following number from the phone app:

Dial *101*9# and tap 📞

Within a few seconds, you'll receive the information via SMS like this:

dtac thailand tourist sim

Final Thoughts

dtac Happy Tourist eSIM, regardless of which plan you choose, undoubtedly offers great value for money. Based on my own positive experience using this eSIM in Thailand, I can confidently recommend it as your top choice for the following reasons:

✅ Affordable pricing (50GB / 10 Day plan for under $10, Unlimited 15 Day plan for under $20)

✅ Local connection without roaming = low latency (less sluggish) compared to roaming eSIMs

✅ Call credit included + Unlimited domestic calls to dtac numbers

✅ Fulfills typical travel connectivity needs with reliable cellular performance (though not super fast)

✅ Robust coverage in the majority of Thai cities (though AIS is probably better for very rural areas)

✅ Supports Personal Hotspot (tethering) to connect multiple devices

If you are traveling more than 10 or 15 days, you'd have to either buy multiple eSIMs or you might want to find a different eSIM with a longer validity from eSIMDB 👇.

Best Thailand Prepaid Sim Card for Tourists

DIscounted Thailand Sim Card - DTAC

What's In This Guide?

Wi-Fi is quite common in Thailand, and with decent connection speeds. However, you won’t always find Wi-Fi hotspots when you are traveling around the city or in more remote areas.

10 years ago, I honestly wouldn’t have cared about getting a prepaid sim card with internet data. I was happy to totally disconnect and go with the flow. However, travel has changed.

We rely on travel blogs for advice, Google Maps for directions, comparison websites for hotel bookings, social media to stay in contact, and so much more. Now a $10 sim card, can save you way more money than that.

How many times have you found a better hotel deal by comparing the price online? Agoda, Booking, HotelsCombined. It only takes one saving to pay off the phone sim card.

Can you even imagine trying to find your travel friends these days by saying “I’ll meet you at the temple entrance by the Buhhda tomorrow at 9am” no phone, no messenger?

Nup… I’ll take the sim card any day of the week.

I highly suggest getting this tourist sim card by DTAC . If you purchase online through my favorite Thai travel company (TakeMeTour) you will also get a discount. No worries, it’s on me.

Which Companies Offer Sim Cards in Thailand?

There are three major telecommunications companies in Thailand available to tourists; AIS, DTAC, and True. Sure, there may be others out there, but they aren’t very common.

DTAC is part of the mega Norwegian telecommunications company called Telenor. They offer phone services all around Asia and Europe and therefore have phone pretty awesome deals going on.

AIS is the Thai competitor of DTAC. Some say that AIS offers the best coverage across Thailand, however, I’ve never experienced any issues with DTAC. The AIS packages are also slightly more expensive.

True offer the True Move tourist sim. This is a mistake I made once before, and never again. The marketing is so misleading. It has internet data which is only possible to use via designated True Move hot spots. That’s just like having a very limited free Wi-Fi system.

What is the Price of a Tourist Sim Card?

The prepaid sim card price depends on three factors; how many days you want to use the sim card, how much data you want to use, and how much call credit you want.

DTAC’s Happy Tourist Sim is the best option available.

It offers 8 days UNLIMITED data for 235 THB (USD 7.50). That’s less than one dollar per day! Click here to pre-purchase with a discount now.

While the data is unlimited, the first 3 GB is at maximum speed, and further downloads are at 384 kB/s. That’s still fine for web browsing, uploading photos to Insta, and using Google Maps.

After the first 8 days, you can extend the unlimited data for another 7 days for just 160 THB (USD 5). And so on…

You also get 100 THB of call credit which can be topped up in convenience stores at any time. Local calls cost 1 THB per minute, so it should be plenty for your trip when required.

In comparison, AIS offers an 8 day Traveller Sim for 299 THB with similar conditions. However, I am not so sure that this card can be renewed as cheaply as DTAC.

As mentioned above, I won’t even go into the option offered by True Move. It’s terrible.

Where Can You Pick Up a Thailand Sim Card?

Warning: stores in smaller shopping centers and 7/11 convenience stores will NOT sell a 4G data prepaid sim card to tourists. They are required to complete a process where your passport details are collected. This is only done at airports and major stores.

The best place to get a prepaid sim card is at the airport when you enter the country. There are stores at the front of the airport terminal at both Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport.

Use this link to pre-purchase the sim card online now and get a 22% discount .

Pick up your sim card at the counter in the airport simply by showing your purchase confirmation. The pickup counter is just outside the main arrivals door, near the ATMs and minivan booths.

Tip: I suggest taking a screenshot of the purchase confirmation straight away as you won’t have any internet before getting that sim.

If you miss out on picking up a sim card at the airport, then you can also buy one at a major AIS and DTAC store. In Bangkok, the major stores are located at CentralWorld and Siam Paragon.

Thailand’s Tourist Sim Cards, Which One is the Best?

The Internet is your lifeline when it comes to traveling. A known life saver on the difficult situation while you are on the road. A place to sleep, good food around the corner and transportation can be easily found and book in your phone so a sim card with data is vital.

There are 3 major sim card providers in Thailand: True Move, DTAC and AIS.

Which is the best? Well, it depends.

dtac thailand tourist sim

DTAC If you are planning to go island hopping in Thailand and still want to be connected to the world then do not choose AIS. It can be hard to connect using their data in these places. DTAC is the SIM card you want for island hopping in the South of Thailand as they have the best coverage on islands.

For the fastest internet, you should get a SIM card of AIS, as their speed is by far the best. Although their internet speed is very fast, their 4G coverage is pretty much unreliable at times. But staying in places like Phuket or Samui, AIS can be your best bet.

This is our pick simply because it has the widest coverage of 4G/LTE in the country.

For traveling up north to places like Chiang Mai it only depends if you want to be connected to 4G or not. All providers have reliable coverage, though only True has a big 4G network and provide the best 4G coverage in Thailand.

To check their current promos and offerings: www.truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/international_service/visit_thailand/en www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/tourist-sim.html www.ais.co.th/travellersim/

Where To Buy: You can easily find it in the airports and 7Elevens

P. S. Though still keep in mind that Thai mobile providers are constantly upgrading their coverage, changing their rates in providing better and faster internet.

[For Travelers] Getting a SIM Card at Don Mueang International Airport (DMK)

Getting a SIM card and eSIM at Don Mueang Airport (DMK) for tourists is a quick and easy process with booths from providers like AIS, DTAC, and TrueMove H located throughout the airport, so you can stay connected during your stay in Thailand without hassle.

Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) along with Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) are two major airports of Thailand located in Bangkok.

As the smaller and older airport of Bangkok two airports, Don Mueang primarily supports the low-cost regional carriers, with Terminal 2 serving domestic flights and Terminal 1 serving international flights. If you travel to Thailand and land at Don Mueang Airport Bangkok, you may be anxious about what to expect after landing due to the airport being labelled as “low-cost” terminal.

One of the most common questions that many travelers to Thailand have is: how to buy a Thailand tourist (e)SIM card at Don Mueang Airport .

In this article, we will guide you steps on buying a prepaid (e)SIM card at Don Muang Airport (DMK) for travelers.

  • Where to get sim cards at Don Mueang Airport (DMK)
  • How can tourists register a sim card at DMK airport
  • How much does a sim card for Thailand cost at DMK airport
  • Where to exchange money (for buying sim cards and other purposes)

The process to buy sim cards at Don Mueang airport is fast and easy. Let’s check out!

Editor’s note:

  • To use a prepaid sim card in Thailand, it’s necessary for your phone to be unlocked. This rule applies to both international sim cards and esim. Generally, phones bought from Asia, Europe, and Australia are unlocked, while those from the USA are often locked.
  • Buying a prepaid physical sim card upon arrival at Don Mueang Airport DMK is the most convenient way to do so for your trip to Thailand.
  • The packages offered by various mobile operators in Thailand are similar in terms of data volume and validity, but it’s recommended to choose the one with the highest data speed.
  • For those looking for a good sim card option in Bangkok, the DTAC sim card is recommended due to its affordable price and good speed.
  • If Bangkok is just one of the many stops on your trip, it’s advisable to consider an international travel sim card that allows you to use data in multiple countries.
  • The sim card in Thailand will no longer expire. Even after a year, if you come back, they are still valid. When buying a sim card, you have to register the sim card. That means a copy of the passport will be deposited.

I. Where to buy a SIM card at Don Mueang International Airport after arrival?

Passengers and travelers who need to buy SIM cards or other services can find the stores of the three major operators at Don Mueang Airport. These stores are located at the bottom of Terminal 1 and in the transition between Terminal 1 and 2, and on the first floor of Terminal 2’s north side, near the connecting walkway to Terminal 1 Building.

Upon arrival at the airport, you will move from visa/immigration to collect your luggage and then pass through Customs. After passing through Customs, you will reach the ground floor.

On the ground floor of Don Mueang Airport, you will find two SIM card shops of DTAC and TrueMove H, where you can purchase tourist SIM cards for Thailand.

Here are some guidelines for purchasing SIM cards from the three major mobile operators in Thailand

1. Where to buy a DTAC tourist SIM card at Don Mueang International Airport?

  • Branch 1: at International Arrival Hall between Exit No.3 and No.5
  • Branch 2: International Arrivals Hall, opposite Exit No.6
  • Opening hours: 7:00 – 10:00 pm, daily

2. Where to buy a AIS tourist SIM card at DMK ariport?

The AIS shop at DMK airport provides customer service to AIS customers and services to new customers, including travelers who want to buy tourist sim cards for Thailand.

  • Location: International Arrivals Hall 1, 1st floor, Exit No.2
  • Opening hours: 24 hours, daily

3. Where to buy a tourist TrueMove H SIM card at Don Mueang airport?

Don’t want to wait until you arrive in Thailand to get your prepaid SIM card? Buy an eSIM online instead! Thailandesim.com has a better option for tourists to Thailand to access the Internet without waiting in line at the airport. Find out at Thailand SIM Cards & eSIM .

III. How much does a tourist sim card cost at Don Mueang International Airport?

It is well-known that sim cards in Thailand are more expensive at Don Mueang International Airport than in shops located outside the airport. Additionally, at DMK Airport, they sell tourist sim cards at rates specifically intended for tourists.

The cost of a tourist SIM card at Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand can vary depending on the carrier and package you choose.

Some of the available carriers at the airport are AIS, True Move, and DTAC, and they all offer various types of tourist SIM cards that come with different packages and prices.

The price range for a tourist SIM card at Don Mueang Airport was approximately 150-300 Baht (approximately 4.5-9 USD) , depending on the carrier and package you choose.

However, please note that prices are subject to change and may vary based on current promotions, exchange rates, and other factors.

Pro Tip: It is always a good idea to check with the specific carrier for the most up-to-date pricing information.

IV. How to register a SIM card in Thailand at Don Mueang Airport?

Everyone buying a prepaid sim card in Bangkok will have to show any form of photo ID, so bring your passport. Your new Thailand sim card will be registered on your passport number and name and a copy will be taken in the store.

Better option:

If you want to avoid this then you can order an international SIM card online or get a tourist eSIM for Thailand . No passport registration is needed for these SIM cards.

V. Can I buy a Thailand eSIM for tourists online before arriving at DMK airport?

If you’re planning a trip to Thailand, it’s a good idea to buy an eSIM before arriving at the DMK airport. An eSIM is like a virtual SIM card that you can activate on your phone without having to physically insert a new SIM card.

Here are some advantages and disadvantages of using an eSIM in Thailand:

Advantages:

  • No need to register personal information
  • Purchase and activate the eSIM in advance
  • Stay connected immediately after landing at the airport
  • Keep your original SIM card in your phone while using the eSIM
  • Easily activate the eSIM on your mobile device without visiting a physical store

Disadvantages:

  • Requires a mobile device supported with eSIM
  • If you lose or damage your phone or experience technical issues, you may not be able to use the eSIM, which could be problematic while traveling.

Where to buy a tourist eSIM to Thailand before arrival at DMK airport?

It’s recommended that you buy a tourist eSIM from a reputable eSIM provider such as Thailandesim.com, Gigago.com, etc. instead of directly from a local Thailand mobile operator.

This is because eSIM providers offer more convenience, cost savings, and diverse options.

  • Convenience: You can buy and activate eSIMs online, which is more convenient than having to go to a physical store and register personal information.
  • Cost effective: Travel eSIMs can also be more cost-effective, and eSIM providers offer a wider range of package options from different Thai mobile network operators, giving you more flexibility and varying prices.
  • Numerous options: Some eSIM providers, like Thailandesim.com, offer data plans from both DTAC and AIS, giving you numerous options to choose from.

Which are best eSIM plans for travelers to Thailand?

Here are some popular eSIM data plans for tourists to Thailand:

AIS Thailand eSIM (data + calls) 8 days

V. Currency exchange – cash only

This part is for travelers who buy tourist sim cards for Thailand by cash. You can exchange money after passing through customs. However, many sim card stores in the baggage claim and before customs only accept cash, which can be inconvenient if you don’t have Thai Baht yet.

There are some places where you can exchange money at Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok, Thailand. Some of the options include:

  • Currency exchange counters: there are several currency exchange counters at DMK airport, including at the arrival hall and departure hall. They offer competitive rates, but may charge comission fees.
  • ATMs: be noted that ATMs in Bangkok may charge a 220 THB fee per transaction
  • Independent money changers: located through the Don Mueang Airport, especially in the arrival hall, offers competitive rates, but may NOT charge commission fees.

Specific places are Super Rich, Siam Exchange, Vasu Exchange, and ATMs of various banks like Bangkok Bank, Siam Commercial Bank, and Kasikorn Bank.

To pay by card, you must wait until you reach the arrival hall, where all mobile shops accept credit card payments.

VI. Free Wi-Fi

At Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport, travelers can enjoy free Wi-Fi access for a duration of 2 hours.

To connect to the network, passengers simply need to select the “@AirportTrueFreeWiFi” network.

To extend the free WiFi access beyond the initial two-hour timeframe, travelers can re-register with fresh information every two hours. This allows them to continue to enjoy the convenience of the airport’s WiFi network throughout their time at the airport without incurring any additional charges.

VII. Extra tips when buying Thailand SIM cards at Don Mueang airport

  • Compare the offers: There are several mobile network providers at the airport, and they offer different packages. Before buying a SIM card, make sure to compare the offers and choose the one that suits your needs the most.
  • Check the validity period: Some SIM cards have a validity period, after which you have to top up to keep the number active. Make sure to check the validity period before buying the SIM card, and choose one that suits the length of your stay in Thailand.
  • Verify the SIM card balance: After purchasing the SIM card, verify the balance by making a test call or sending a test message. This will ensure that the card is activated and you have the correct balance.
  • Activate international roaming: If you plan to use the SIM card outside of Thailand, make sure to activate international roaming. This can be done by contacting the mobile network provider’s customer service.
  • Keep the SIM card safe: Make sure to keep the SIM card safe, as losing it can mean losing your phone number and any remaining balance. Keep it in a safe place, such as your wallet or a secure pocket.
  • Consider data packages: Thailand offers a lot of interesting sights and activities, and you might want to share your experiences on social media. Consider purchasing a data package to avoid incurring high data charges.
  • Avoid buying SIM cards from unauthorized sellers: Some unauthorized sellers may offer SIM cards at a lower price, but they may not be reliable or provide good customer service. Stick to buying from authorized sellers to avoid any issues.
  • Choose prepaid eSIM instead of prepaid physical SIM card: If your phone supports eSIM technology, opt for an eSIM and purchase it beforehand. This way, upon arrival at BKK airport, you’ll have instant internet connectivity without having to queue up.

I bought the promoted Esim 16 day Thai tourist on May 3, 2023 and activated on May 6. Today is the 8 day mark and I received a message from Dtac that my plan expired. I emailed esim2fly and am still waiting to hear back from them.

Hi, We understand your concerns. Update:DTAC Tourist eSIM 8+8 day promo is now over. You now get the 8 days with your DTAC Tourist eSIM purchase. Good news: The eSIM is extendable and reloadable, so you can add another data bundle.

Sorry, no reviews match your current selections

DTAC Tourist eSIM - For 10 Days in Thailand -50GB

We found the issue with your order, the QR code was not auto-sent. We have now sent your QR code via email and also available in

You need to activate the ESIM first in Thailand. Once it is Active, you will be able to receive SMS in your number.

The best practice is to buy the eSIM 1-2 weeks in advance. You can activate it anytime you want, and on the day of your trip, select SIM2Fly as your default data SIM network. After this the usage of your data will start

5 Best SIM Cards for Thailand in 2024

Home | Travel | Asia | 5 Best SIM Cards for Thailand in 2024

If you want to buy a SIM card for Thailand , you should know that there are several options to choose from. I know that planning a trip can be overwhelming, so in this guide, I’m sharing the best Thailand SIM cards to help you out.

Having access to the Internet while traveling is super useful, as you can look up directions, nearby attractions, reviews, and more. For our trips, we always purchase an Holafly eSIM so we can update our Capture the Atlas social networks and keep up with the blog.

Plus, this eSIM for Thailand is completely digital, so it takes just a few minutes to install and activate. It also offers unlimited data, so we can focus on more important things like enjoying our trip. If, after reading this article, you decide this Thailand eSIM card is perfect for you, don’t forget to take advantage of this Holafly discount and save some money.

5% OFF your international eSIM card

Of course, there are other good travel SIMs for Thailand , so if your device isn’t compatible with a digital card or you want more options, keep reading. I’ve included the best local SIMs in Thailand as well as the physical card from SimOptions , which you can purchase before your trip.

How do SIM cards for Thailand work?

A SIM card for Thailand works the same way as any other SIM in your home country. If you get a physical card, you’ll be able to browse the Web and, in some cases, send texts and make calls to local phones in Thailand, depending on the plan.

Krabi Thailand, best sim cards for thailand

With a digital SIM like the Holafly eSIM , you’ll only have data, but I think this is more than enough for your trip. You’ll still be able to make calls by using mobile apps like Skype and WhatsApp, and you’ll be able to keep your home phone number. Just be aware that not all devices are compatible with virtual SIMs, so check your phone’s compatibility here before purchasing.

Installing a prepaid SIM card for Thailand is easy and will allow you to access the Internet in Thailand in just a few minutes. If you have the Holafly international eSIM , you just need to scan the QR code that gets emailed to you after purchasing. For physical cards, you must insert the card into your phone’s SIM card slot and activate it via SMS or call, depending on the company. If your phone doesn’t have a dual card slot, keep your original SIM card in a safe place so it doesn’t get lost while you’re traveling.

Thailand SIM card price comparison

To give you a better idea of the price for a Thailand SIM card , here is a comparison chart with the prices, plan durations, and gigabytes for the 5 best SIM cards in Thailand . I’ve included the Holafly eSIM and other physical cards such as the SimOptions SIM card and other local SIMs in Thailand .

As you can see, the only two options that offer Thailand SIM cards with unlimited data are the Holafly eSIM and the local SIM, TrueMove , and only for some plans. Keep in mind that you can’t order the TrueMove card until you arrive in Thailand, so it’s not my first recommendation, especially for short trips. Also, if your phone doesn’t have a dual card slot, you’ll have to remove your usual SIM card to install the Thai one.

If you’d rather have everything ready to go before leaving for your trip, and your phone isn’t compatible with digital SIM cards , consider getting the SimOptions card . This way, you can access the Internet as soon as you land in Thailand.

If you’re on a tight budget, the cheapest local SIM cards for Thailand are AIS, DTAC, and TrueMove, but you can’t purchase them until you’re in Thailand. For convenience and guaranteed high-speed data, I recommend the Holafly eSIM . You can buy it and install it before your trip and enjoy unlimited data without removing your phone’s original SIM.

Best SIM cards for Thailand

Now that you’ve compared the costs for a Thailand SIM card , I’ll share the pros and cons of each option.

I rely on the Internet for work, so I need a company that can guarantee high-speed data and a stable connection worldwide. That’s why I always get the Holafly eSIM . While it may be more expensive than the local cards, it’s super easy to install, and I can activate it from home. For me, it’s worth the extra cost not to have to worry about shopping around for the best deal on Thai phone cards when I could be enjoying my trip.

Plus, Holafly offers customer support in English, while most local Thailand SIM cards only have assistance in Thai. Still, if you want to purchase one of these cards, you can read about the best options below.

1. Holafly eSIM , the best SIM card for Thailand

First, the Holafly eSIM is the best eSIM for Thailand , thanks to its convenience and simplicity. It’s 100% digital, so it’s ideal for those who don’t have a dual card slot on their phone, or who want to set up their SIM before their trip.

To activate the Holafly card, simply open the email that gets sent to you after purchasing the eSIM. It’ll have a QR code, which you need to scan to start using mobile data.

Holafly eSIM, thailand sim card prepaid

While this is a super streamlined process, you should be aware that not all devices are compatible with this type of travel eSIM for Thailand . I always recommend checking your phone’s compatibility through this link before purchasing, although if you have one of the latest smartphone models, you should be fine.

Also, if you run into any problems, Holafly’s assistance team is available 24 hours a day in English, so you’ll always have someone to help you.

We used the Holafly eSIM for Thailand for one of our trips to Asia, and we ended up having a better Internet connection than our friends who bought a local SIM card for Thailand (I believe it was TrueMove). That said, what I value most about Holafly is that they offer unlimited data, so we’re always able to connect and stay on top of our work.

If you want this eSIM for travel to Thailand , I suggest taking advantage of the Holafly discount codes that can save you money.

2. SimOptions card , the best physical SIM card for Thailand

If you want to get everything ready from home, but your phone is not compatible with eSIM cards, then SimOptions is a great alternative.

Just remember that you must order your international SIM in advance since these physical SIM cards for Thailand take up to 3 business days to arrive at your home. Once you receive your card, just put it into your device to start using the data. And if you have any questions, SimOptions has a support team that is available 24 hours a day to help you out.

SimOptions, sim cards for thailand

Of course, if your phone doesn’t have a dual SIM slot, you’ll have to remove your usual SIM card and keep it in a safe place while you use the Thai one. Another thing to keep in mind is that SimOptions only offers 14-day plans with 10 GB of data. To compare, the Holafly eSIM and most local SIM cards for Thailand have plans with more data at cheaper prices.

3. AIS , another good SIM card for Thailand

If you decide that you want a local SIM card in Thailand , then consider getting one from AIS . This is one of the most popular companies, offering 14-day and 30-day plans with a good amount of mobile data.

The biggest disadvantage of these cards is that you’ll have to wait until you’re in Thailand to get one. This means you’ll have to spend time buying a SIM card in the Thailand airport or at one of the local stores. This can eat up a lot of your vacation time, so it’s not ideal for shorter trips.

AIS SIM card, thailand cell phone plans

On the other hand, these local cards have an exclusive Wi-Fi network for customers, so you’ll always have Internet at important sites and tourist attractions. Just log into the network with your personal password, and you won’t have to consume your plan’s data.

To activate this card, you must call the AIS phone line and follow the activation instructions. I recommend doing this at the store you get it from since the instructions are usually in Thai.

4. DTAC , a Thailand SIM card for short trips

DTAC is another option is you want a prepaid Thailand SIM card from a local company. They offer shorter-term plans, so if you’re only going to be in the country for a few days, it’s a good option. That said, the prices are about the same as the other local companies.

DTAC SIM card, thailand sim cards for tourists

You can buy a DTAC card from any official store or at one of their airport kiosks. It’s easier to find retailers in bigger cities like Bangkok, so if you’re going to a smaller town, you might have some trouble. On the plus side, this company has a customer service hotline that you can call for support in English, so if you run into any technical problems, you should be able to solve them quite easily.

5. TrueMove , a cheap prepaid SIM card for Thailand

Finally, the prepaid SIM card for Thailand from TrueMove is another popular option. Of all the local cards, this is my favorite since it offers a wide range of plans at affordable prices, and some of them include unlimited data.

TrueMove, best sim card for thailand

Like AIS, TrueMove offers unlimited Wi-Fi, so you can consume a good amount of data during your trip. One of the downsides of TrueMove is that you must buy the SIM card in Thailand at one of the authorized stores. They’re also available in some subway stations, but it’ll still take you some time to find a store, make the purchase, and complete the activation process.

Where to buy a SIM card for Thailand

As you’ve seen, you can buy a Thailand SIM card online in your home country, or you can wait until you arrive at your destination. I prefer having everything ready to go before my trip, so if that sounds like you, I recommend getting the Holafly eSIM or a card from SimOptions.

Below, I’ll tell you how to buy your SIM card for Thailand , whether you’re doing it before your trip or after your arrival in Thailand.

Buy a Thailand SIM card in your home country

If you haven’t left for your trip yet, you can purchase the SIM online. With the Holafly digital SIM , you’ll receive an email as soon as you make the purchase, and if you buy from SimOptions , you’ll get the card delivered to your home within 3 business days.

Wiang Kum Kam, international sim card for thailand

For me, this is the best option since I can install the card in advance, and if I have any problems activating it, I can sort them out before my trip. This gives me greater peace of mind when I arrive at the airport since I don’t need to worry about locating a store, installing a local Thailand SIM card , and navigating the language barrier.

Another great thing about buying a Thailand SIM card in advance is that I can start using my data immediately. This is useful if I need to call a taxi or Uber, or I need to access online maps.

Buy a SIM card for Thailand at your destination

If you’re already traveling and still need a SIM card for Thailand , you can still buy the Holafly eSIM . It’s totally digital, so once you purchase it, you’ll get an email with a QR code that you can scan to connect to the Internet.

The alternative is to buy a travel SIM in Thailand from one of the local companies. Make sure you go to an official store or authorized retailer, especially since there are lots of unauthorized stores and kiosks that may offer SIM cards with less data than advertised.

Whichever option you choose, remember to always check your phone’s compatibility in advance. In the case of Holafly, you can go through this link to see if you’re device will work with an eSIM for Thailand. For all other cards, you must check with the store.

How to activate a SIM card for Thailand

The process of activating a Thailand SIM card depends on which type of card you get. For example, with the Holafly eSIM , you just have to scan the QR code in your email to download the configuration. This will automatically activate the eSIM on your phone.

Bangkok market, best esim for thailand

For physical cards, insert the SIM into your device, then proceed with the activation process via SMS or call. If you’re getting a local prepaid SIM card in Thailand , I recommend asking the salesperson to help you activate it since the instructions are usually in Thai.

Also, consider whether or not your device has a dual SIM slot. If so, you can keep your usual SIM card installed, but if not, you’ll have to remove it so you can insert the Thailand SIM card . Keep your usual SIM card in a safe place so it doesn’t get lost or damaged during your trip.

Thailand SIM card compatibility and requirements

To use the Holafly eSIM, you must have a compatible device, which you can check here . Also, your phone must be unlocked and compatible with Thailand’s network frequency. Otherwise, you won’t be able to use any of the Thai SIM cards in this article.

If you’re buying your SIM card in Thailand upon arriving in the country, you’ll need to present your passport to the salesperson. Then, choose the data plan that best suits your needs and insert the SIM into your device. You’ll have to finish the activation with the specific telephone company for that card, so I recommend completing this process at the store.

Thailand SIM card vs. SIM card for Asia

Finally, if you plan on visiting more than one country in Asia like I did during my 20-day Southeast Asia trip , you may want to take a look at Holafly’s eSIMs for Asia . They work in over a dozen countries, including Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, and the Philippines.

Streets of Bangkok, best sim card in thailand for tourist

With the eSIM for Asia, you won’t have to purchase a new SIM card in every country you visit. Not only can this save you money, but it’ll ensure you stay connected throughout your trip. You can choose between 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, and 30-day plans with unlimited data. You’ll have to decide what works best for you: a card you can use in every country you visit, or individual SIM cards you’ll have to buy at each place you travel to.

There is also the SimOptions card for Asia , which is a good option for those who prefer a physical card. So, go over your options and see which alternative is most useful for your trip.

That’s everything to know about Thai SIM cards , so now you can get Internet in Thailand during your trip. I hope this guide helped you narrow down your options and feel better prepared for your travels, but if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to leave me a comment below. I’d also love to hear about your experience using any of these Thailand SIM cards for tourists .

Until then, stay safe and enjoy your trip!
