NOW HERE, NOW ALWAYS by NDT2 at Amare in The Hague and on tour

ndt2 tour 2022

NDT2 is nominally secondary to, and the feeder for, NDT1. They may be secondary in name but in every other way they are the equal of the main company with their own repertoire and touring programme. This was confirmed, as if it needed confirming to the full house at the Amare, by their new production Now Here, Now Always .

Marcus Goecke’s The Big Crying was premiered in March 2021 as a live-stream from the old Zuiderstrandtheater during the Covid lock-down, so it was good to see it in the flesh, as it were.

The curtain rose to reveal smoke swirling in the darkness and a large flame flickering against the back wall while a rather industrial soundscape completed the sombre scene. Created by Goecke soon after the death of his father it is, to begin with, a solemn affair with the nineteen dancers exploring grief and loss. After a few minutes the depressing, aggressive even, soundscape gave way the songs of Tori Amos and the whole atmosphere became more positive and life affirming, though not losing any of the raw emotion.

Brocken Spectre , Andrew Skeels’ wonderful debut piece for NDT was also about loss. I was thinking in the first interval that it was a pity so many dance pieces are played on a plain open stage enclosed in black and depending on lighting to create an environment. Granted Brocken Spectre was all in black but a huge black curtain lit from above hung on the stage like a soft cathedral or threatening, dangerous landscape. Based on and inspired by Goethe’s A Winter Journey in The Harz and Brahms’ Rhapsody for Alto, Chorus and Orchestra Op. 53, it had a very Wagnerian feel to it. In fact, I was unfamiliar with this Brahms piece and all the way through I was wondering,  is it or isn’t it Wagner? The Brahms was augmented by original music by Julien Tarride played live in the pit by musicians from Het Ballet Ortkest.

The Brocken in question is the highest peak in the Harz mountains and famous for its tales of witchcraft and eerie goings on. Skeels’ creation took us to some sort of post-apocalyptic world where grey and dusty refugees struggled and strained like a latter-day Sisyphus pulling figures on lengths of cloth across the stage. Sometime standing, sometimes wrapped and lying, the zombie-like people were being dragged to some unknown fate. Brilliant.

Cacti , a revival of Alexander Ekman’s exciting and often hilarious 2010 creation, was a much lighter affair to counterpoint the drama of the first two pieces. Each with their own meter-square rostrum, the sixteen dancers performed to music by Schubert, Haydn and Beethoven, often played by a live on-stage ambulant string quartet made up of musicians, again from Het Ballet Ortkest. The piece opened with the dancers kneeling on their plinths performing almost martial arts routines. The twenty/thirty centimetre high platforms were an integral part of the action and were used to perform on, and behind when they were raised vertically. The arrival of a cactus for each of the dancers provided a surreal element to the piece which had the audience smiling and laughing quietly to themselves. For the final sequence the platforms were arranged in a pile and formed the background for, what for me, was the best bit of the piece as boy and girl danced a duet while talking to each other.

Another very satisfying evening of contemporary dance from this world class Nederlands Dans Theater.  Michael Hasted  29 th October 2022

Now Here, Now Always continues on tour until 20 th December.

NDT2 - photo by Joris-Jan Bos

NDT 2 is the part of Nederlands Dans Theater which concentrates on young and emerging talent. It is some six years since the UK was last treated to an NDT2 tour so I was delighted to be part of the large and appreciative audience in Plymouth last night for the three short pieces of this tour.

The Big Cry by Marco Goecke is the first piece, one borne out of the death of Marco's father. Nineteen dancers perform this piece and the style is angular like a slightly too fast old movie or machines slightly out of control. It is a story of coping with grief, both alone and through the attentions of others - the opening sequence is particularly effective with dancers approaching and "supporting" the grieving central character. Lighting changes are used sparingly but to excellent effect and the overall result is extremely effective and uplifting. It is supported by a superb soundtrack with songs by, amongst others, Tori Amos. I was totally engrossed, couldn't rake my eyes off this mesmerising piece.

Simple Things by Hans van Manen is a much smaller and lighter piece with four dancers telling tales of relationship and friendship. To me, it seemed that this was the story of two really close friends living through those experiences when they "lose" each other to relationships outside their friendship but whose closeness survives all those encounters. A thought provoking and intelligent piece that had an easy lightness to it.

IMPASSE by Johan Inger is a much more fun piece that attempts to put over the idea that we are subject to too many external influences and, in the end, we are driven by these into trying to do more with less time. The dance space reduces in size as the number of dancers, each representing some external pressure on their lives, increases. Here is a dance that made the audience think, but also laugh out loud at times. Witty and fast, this clever piece was a genuine delight and left us smiling as we departed.

What a ridiculously talented group of dancers we were treated to in a programme that explored a range of emotions, each distinct and confident in itself but all carrying the thread that is NDT2.

12.12.2023 NDT 2 ILLUMINATE ©Joris-Jan Bos (1).jpg

Illuminate turns the spotlight on three young choreographers and forms the ultimate opportunity for the young dancers of NDT-2 to be exposed to different styles of movement. Micaela Taylor creates a new work, and Jermaine Spivey will further explore his Code of Conduct – originally created for Up & Coming Choreographers 2022 . Besides that, NDT-2 will perform Bedtime story (2021) by Nadav Zelner.

About Nadav Zelner Returning to the NDT stage is Nadav Zelner’s Bedtime story (2021) that the Israeli choreographer created for the company in the height of COVID. “In this work it was important for me to give my dreams a stage, and to give the dreaming child that I once was a tangible expression. As we get older, we tend to abandon our dreams. We should get reacquainted with the child in us,” says Zelner. At the time of its premiere, the work was met with critical acclaim: “Zelner’s dance language is passionate, lighting fast and absolute, detailed down to the thumb,” wrote NRC.

About Micaela Taylor Micaela Taylor is a dancer, choreographer, and the Artistic Director of her company TL Collective. Trained in hip-hop and ballet, she has created her own dance genre called 'Expand Practice', exuding emotion from the core and creating varied physicality and textures as expressions of one’s authentic self. Taylor’s movement language has been described by the Los Angeles Times as “athletic and graceful, precise and fluid”, and one that “settles in the dichotomies.” This premiere will mark Taylor’s first ever creation for the company.

About Jermaine Spivey What does participation look, feel, and sound like? How does our perception of time or 'progress' stimulate engagement? With the desire to support new voices, NDT has invited Jermaine Spivey to the Amare stage with an expanded version of Code of Conduct (2022), originally created for Up & Coming Choreographers 2022 . “With Code of Conduct I was interested in defining physicality through choreographic and improvised structures that place the dancers in states of happening, nothing, something,” Spivey says.

NDT2 – NEDERLANDS DANS THEATER – Theatre Royal Plymouth

1 march 2022.

Nederlands Dans Theater is regarded as one of the world’s leading contemporary dance companies and on the evidence presented by their current UK tour it is not difficult to see why.

The UK is so fortunate to have an organisation such as the Dance Consortium which works with 18 regional theatres to bring top quality dance to their stages; offering a glimpse of worldwide companies with their breadth of skills and content. This production by NDT2 is part of this exemplary initiative.

Contemporary dance can sometimes be seen as impenetrable, mysterious, strange and inaccessible, but the beauty of it is that you can appreciate so much of it on many levels; from the sheer skill of the performers, the imagination of the choreographer and the stories that you might illicit from what you see. In this current tour NDT2 are presenting three wonderfully contrasting pieces and they have the audience entranced from start to finish.

THE BIG CRYING by Marco Goecke is an incredibly fast-paced, staccato dance featuring 16 dancers; sometimes one at a time, sometimes in groups. Vocal screams and laughter are offered up accompanied by the haunting songs of Tori Amos. The speed of movement in close proximity has a watchmakers precision. The sheer physicality of the performers is breathtaking. Feeding off the emotions he felt at the death of his Father, Goecke presents a work of power of intrigue and of impact.

SIMPLE THINGS by Hans Van Manen is a more balletic piece by contrast. Two men dance together; in competition? They are joined by two women and they pair up as the tonal quality of the music – wonderful combination of Alan Bern’s Scarlatti Fever and Joseph Haydn’s piano trio nr 28 in E-major – changes, slightly darker. The women leave the men to conclude the dance; it is cheeky, fun and utterly beguiling. Simply beautiful.

IMPASSE by Johan Inger starts with a doorway through which one, then two, then three people appear; happy, joyful, fun… others arrive, then more, the door gets smaller, a party ensues, the initial trio subsumed by others until…. It is exhilarating and inventive and intense at times. Inger illustrates how as individuals we are influenced by others and caught up by the actions of others. It is vibrant and thrilling work.

All pieces are staged wonderfully well with exquisite lighting throughout from Ubo Haberland, Joop Caboort and Tom Visser.

The performers are all under 25 and are magnificent, it seems unfair to highlight any but it is difficult not to have deep admiration for the work of Emmitt Cawley and Auguste Palayer.

The audience were transfixed throughout and brought to their feet at the final curtain.

NDT2 have put together a programme so skilfully which brings out the very best of their dancers; these are performances of outstanding quality from a company that is justly regarded as masterful.

NDT 2 – Review

Calling all StageSiders, welcome back to another review here at StageSideUK. This time we are talking about Dance Consortium’s NDT2, Netherlands Dans Theatre. Newcastle Theatre Royal invited StageSideUK to see the show on the 15th of March (Our first of hopefully many with Newcastle Theatre Royal). What a show this is! So lace up your ballet flats, put on your leotard because the review is about to begin!

NDT2

About the show

“For their highly anticipated return to the UK, NDT 2 will perform works by celebrated international choreographers: Marco Goecke, Hans van Manen and Johan Inger, featuring two UK premieres.

In his very personal and moving piece about the fragility of life and love, Goeke’s The Big Crying, with songs by Tori Amos, energises the fiery power of 18 outstanding dancers to embrace a celebration of life.

Van Manen’s exquisite quartet, Simple Things, featuring Haydn’s Piano Trio No. 28 in E-major, is described as ‘pure dance art’, presenting a master class in simplicity.

For the finale, Johan Inger’s vibrant IMPASSE bursts onto the stage with the joyful music of French-Lebanese jazz trumpeter and composer Ibrahim Maalouf, as he explores the strength of togetherness over isolation in our world today.

This is dance at its most sublime level. NDT 2 are not to be missed!”

And they’re right. This show is definitely not one to be missed.

NDT2

My experience!

Walking in I didn’t know what to expect. With this being my first non ballet dance, I was walking into new territory.

In the first act, I was introduced to a cacophony of noise and contrasting beautiful yet alarming images. The Big Crying was a stunning blend of ugly and beautiful, loud and quiet, soft and aggressive. NDT2’S first part is a gorgeous portrayal of the idyllic cacophony that we call life. It really did have me in awe. To see seemingly boneless dancers, it was beautiful. Just a gorgeous first act with beautiful aesthetics!

NDT2

The second act, Simple Things, is a glorious burst of energy when following The Big Crying. The perfectly synchronised dancing between the two pairs was so beautiful, and matched by the solo moments each dancer had. The narrative was clear in parts and deeply, dare I say unnecessarily, complex. With the ‘simple things’ being layered and layered. The beginning and ending was a perfect opener and closer for this act, allowing the audience the chance to breathe and enjoy the beauty of the art form.

ndt2 tour 2022

The third act, Impasse, was a lively mixture of dance styles, music types and aesthetic flair. With some contrasting costume and set design, choreography and characters on stage, this dance was perhaps the most eye-catching in terms of theatrics, but also the most accessible and Newbie friendly. With several giggles, lots of toe tapping and ending with a standing ovation, NDT2’s Impasse was the most perfect addition to add on top of this deep, rich and enjoyable dance experience that we had just been able to witness.

ndt2 tour 2022

Impasse really did bring a lively ending to such an incredible showcase of talent. Impasse had the hard job of combining latin, ballet, modern freestyle and many other dance types (including what looked like a good old twerk at one point). But it did it, and smoothly too.

A huge congratulations to all involved in Impasse. You had the audience on their feet. It really was an amazing mix of dance styles, music and visuals.

ndt2 tour 2022

Standout stars!

I really can’t pick out any key dancers as stand out stars. The whole company was so incredibly talented. The cast were lovely to watch and this performance was a great one to see, as someone that is new to watching dance. I really do take my hat off to all of those dancers, choreographers and designers. The art they made on that stage was incredible.

Now onto the ratings!

Entertainment:.

This show was gorgeous to watch. The aesthetics, the choreography, the talent that is on that stage is next level. The amount of effort that you can see and hear is well worth the visit. Even if dance isn’t really your thing, you will still like this show. There is enough drama, theatre, spectacle, choreography and music to keep everyone entertained. I was fully hooked from the beginning and didn’t want the performance to end. I have to give the show a full five stars for entertainment.

5 stars

Value for money

In terms of value for money, you don’t need to ask where your money goes. From the giant blow torch, to the lighting design, the music and the scenery, you can see where every penny has gone. Plus the talent on stage.. Its amazing! Although I was invited to see the show by Newcastle Theatre Royal as part of the press team, I did check my ticket price. My seat is sold at £29. I have paid more and got much less from other dance shows.

My seat was not the most expensive or cheapest option but it offered a great view for a great price. I don’t think there would be much of a different view if I had upgraded or sat in another area, but I also would have happily paid that extra bit more and still felt like I got my moneys worth.  I have to give the show a perfect score of five out of five for their value for money. My seat provided a great view for a decent price and even the most expensive options were amazing.

5 stars

Accessibility

This show isn’t very accessible. With flashing lights, lots of sudden very loud noises and lots of sensory overload. There are no relaxed performances for this show and seems to be no level of access for other peoples needs. I think this is a bit of a shame but I can kind of understand why it is like this. On the one hand, the dancers are telling the story through their body and the reason people would go to the show is to watch the dancing. But I do think this excludes a large chunk of people. Perhaps an audio guide would have been a good addition. There is lots of screaming, music, white noise, laughing and other noises that happen suddenly that were quite alarming but they were all there with a good intention and weren’t just placed for the shock of it all.

Overall I think I would give this performance five out of five stars and a spot in my top 5 shows of all time. The entertainment was amazing, the value was pretty competitive with London theatres and large scale productions but there were accessibility issues. With a lot of Loud Sounds, lighting effects and immersive theatre techniques, I don’t think it would be that appropriate for quite a number of people, which makes the show rather exclusive. As I am only affected by sudden loud noises, I was able to sit through it and enjoy the performance.

I really recommend this performance. It was gorgeous, slick, visually impressive and honestly incredible. You need to see NDT2, so if it is coming to a city near you… get your ticket! You can find out where NDT2 will be heading here .

4 stars

Have your say!

Have you seen NDT2? What did you think? Do we want to see that latin mash up again, or are we happy the blow torch has been extinguished? Let me know in the comments and let’s get a discussion going.

As always, please be respectful of each other’s opinions and be kind to each other. I completely respect and value everyone that worked on this show. We need to remember that these are people with feelings. Let’s treat them with respect. Bullying will not be tolerated and harmful language will be removed.

Nederlands Dans Theater 2 (NDT 2) visits the USA

ndt2 tour 2022

This February, Dutch dance theatre company NDT2 tours the USA

Tue, Feb 3 - Sat, Feb 28  2015

This February, Dutch dance theatre company NDT 2 tours the USA. In addition to that, a Dance Talk will take place on Sunday, February 1st at 5PM at DANY Studios in New York, highlighting the work of Nederlands Dans Theater 2. Dance writer Deborah Jowitt will be present.

About NDT 2

NDT 2 is the launching pad for young dancers, who are carefully selected through auditions. They dance choreographies by the new generation of dance makers, like Alexander Ekman. The group performs all over the world. It is the company’s breeding ground, where talented dancers grow up and young up-and-coming choreographers get the chance to develop.

About the tour in 2015

After the succesful US tour of NDT 1 in 2013, next winter NDT 2 visits the USA! NDT’s youth arm will perform in New York (Joyce Theatre), Portland (White Bird), Santa Barbara (University of California) and Scotsdale (Center of the Performing Arts). One of the world’s leading dance companies and huge favourites with uk audiences, nederlands dans theater possess a winning combination of balletic grace and virtuosic skill with fearless athleticism, passion and personality..

For their highly anticipated return to the UK, NDT 2 will perform works by celebrated international choreographers: Marco Goecke, Hans van Manen and Johan Inger, featuring two UK premieres.

In his very personal and moving piece about the fragility of life and love, Goeke’s The Big Crying , with songs by Tori Amos, energises the fiery power of 18 outstanding dancers to embrace a celebration of life.

Ukraine attacks Moscow in one of largest ever drone attacks on the Russian capital

By Guy Faulconbridge and Lidia Kelly

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Ukraine attacked Moscow on Wednesday with at least 11 drones shot down by air defences in what Russian officials said was one of the biggest drone strikes on the capital since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022.

The war, largely a grinding artillery and drone battle across the fields, forests and villages of eastern Ukraine, escalated on Aug. 6 when Ukraine sent thousands of soldiers into Russia's western Kursk region.

For months, Ukraine has also fought an increasingly damaging drone war against the refineries and airfields of the world's second largest oil exporter, though major drone attacks on the Moscow region - with a population of over 21 million - are rarer.

Russia's defence ministry said it destroyed a total of 45 drones over Russian territory, including 11 over the Moscow region, 23 over the border region of Bryansk, six over the Belgorod region, three over the Kaluga region and two over the Kursk region.

Some of the drones were destroyed over the city of Podolsk, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. The city in the Moscow region is some 38 kms (24 miles) south of the Kremlin.

"This is one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow using drones ever," Sobyanin said on the Telegram messaging app in the early hours of Wednesday.

"The layered defence of Moscow that was created made it possible to successfully repel all the attacks from the enemy UAVs."

The attack comes as Russia is advancing in eastern Ukraine, where it controls about 18% of the territory, and battling to repel Ukraine's incursion into the Kursk region, the biggest foreign attack on Russian territory since World War Two.

Russian media showed unverified footage of drones whirring over the dawn sky of the Moscow region and then being shot down in a ball of flame by air defences.

Moscow's airports Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky limited flights for four hours but were restarted normal operations from 0330 GMT, Russia's aviation watchdog said.

Sobyanin said that according to preliminary information, there were no injuries or damage reported in the aftermath of the attacks. There were also no casualties or damage reported in the aftermath of the attack on Bryansk in Russia's southwest, the governor of the region Alexander Bogomaz wrote on Telegram.

Russia's RIA state news agency reported that two drones were destroyed over the Tula region, which borders the Moscow region to its north. Vasily Golubev, governor of the Rostov region in Russia's southwest, said air defence forces destroyed a Ukraine-launched missile over the region, with no injuries reported.

The Russia defence ministry did not mention neither Tula nor Rostov in its statement listing destroyed Ukrainian air weapons. Ukraine's military said on Wednesday it overnight struck an S-300 anti-aircraft missile system based in Rostov region.

Reuters could not independently verify the reports.

The drone attack on Moscow is on a par with the May 2023 attack when at least eight drones were destroyed over the capital in an attack President Vladimir Putin said was Kyiv's attempt to scare and provoke Russia.

In Kursk, Russian war bloggers said that intense battles were ongoing along the front in the region where Ukraine has carved out at least 450 square km (175 square miles) of Russian territory.
