With Love, The Browns
Dear Paula, I can’t thank you enough for all you have done for our son and our family during your time with us. You have been more than a teacher for him, but also a friend to me when I needed it most. You have made an impact in our lives and I will always think of you with gratitude and goodness.
The Jones Family
Paula, Thank you so much for all that you have done for our daughter. She is a completely different child than when she started working with you last summer, and it warms my heart to see how much she has grown. We truly cannot thank you enough for the impact you have had on her speech, as well as her confidence in her ability to communicate with family and friends. We are so appreciative and forever grateful for your support of her over the past year. Thank you! All the best, Sarah and Joe
Miss Paula, Thank you so much for all of your hard work in helping our son find his voice. He has so much to say now! We will miss playing with you!
Paula was our son’s speech therapist. We pursued her professional help, support, and guidance over concerns with our son. My son loved his time with Paula. Some days were harder than others, but he always looked forward to their sessions together. Over several months we saw significant improvement with his issues, and he has also become more confident as well. We are truly blessed to have had such knowledgeable help and support and highly recommend her to anyone who has concerns about their child’s speech, language, etc. Thank you for the amazing care you have given us.
Katie
We are writing in appreciation to Paula Schantz for helping us and our daughter with her speech. At 2 years old, her vocabulary was very limited, consisting of about 20-30 words and no sentences. Because of this limitation, she was getting very frustrated and we were constantly dealing with Isabella’s temper tantrums. Paula bonded quickly with her, and she started by teaching her to communicate some words via sign language. We believe this was a very important stepping stone to get her on the right path. It was fun and rewarding to see her asking for “more,” “all done” and of course her favorite sign for “chocolate” through sign language. Paula was great in teaching us techniques, documenting progress and giving us homework. All of this kept her moving forward and making progress with her communication skills. Most importantly we felt Paula cared about our daughter, our family, and the children and the families she was working with. We are sad that she is no longer eligible to continue work with Paula through the same program. Our daughter loves and always asks about Paula. We are thankful we had the opportunity to know and work with her on her skills. We recommend whole heartedly Paula’s work for her professionalism and integrity, navigating kids and families through their quest of communicating better and efficiently.
Chris
Dear Paula, The reason I am writing you a letter is to let you know that you have been a great therapist! I am very thankful to you for all the help you have given me and my daughter. Now she feels more comfortable with herself, her life and her whole environment. Also, she has developed a better way to talk, a better vocabulary, and a better sense of humor!
I highly recommend Ms. Paula with Little Communicators. Before we even started services with Ms. Paula, I had some questions regarding my child's speech IEP and Ms. Paula was so kind and spent so much time with me on a phone call listening and giving me advice and resources. Even though Ms. Paula was completely booked, she worked hard to find a time to add us to her schedule and even tried to find times she would not normally see clients. Her kindness and dedication to her work was apparent immediately. Ms. Paula made every session fun, interesting, and enjoyable for my children which really helped them enjoy going to speech which was critical. They worked on speech through games, crafts, cookie decorating, and more. Having your children wanting to go to speech and motivated to work on speech is half the battle. Ms. Paula is extremely knowledgable and was able to give me great resources and recommended excellent doctors for follow-ups and even an interesting book I read in order to further my understanding. In fact, Ms. Paula recommended I bring my child to an ENT for something she noticed and actually caught an issue the pediatrician and I had not even caught. Additionally, Ms. Paula has vast knowledge and experience with myofunctional therapy as well as programs to help motivate children to stop habits such as finger sucking. She went above and beyond planning a very special party for when that goal was achieved and her extra special efforts in this area made the program a success and helped my child achieve that goal! Ms. Paula truly cares about her clients and her warmth, kindness, enthusiasm, positivity, and creativity made speech such a positive experience for my children and for our family.

Little Journeys offers different options for support, including screening, assessment, therapy, consultation, and summer programming packages. Some of these services may be covered by your insurance through your out-of-network benefits. We can guide you through finding out your benefits.
How can I get reimbursed by my insurance company?
Though I do not guarantee that your insurance company will reimburse any of the cost, I can generate a Superbill, which you can submit to your insurance. We recommend calling your insurance company first, using the number on the back of your insurance card, to discuss potential reimbursement of speech/language services.
Please ask me for a parent guide on calling about out of network benefits!
Some or all of Little Journeys Speech Therapy's services may not be covered by your insurance, and you are responsible for covering the difference between the two.
How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
Some of the most common concerns I hear from families are: my child is hard to understand, my child is a late-talker, my child has a hard time understanding my directions, my child stutters, and my child talks but it doesn't make sense. If you have any of these concerns or others, then your child may benefit from speech/language therapy.
Consultations are always FREE. Contact me to schedule a time to talk about your concerns!

Our Core Values
At the heart of Little Voices lies a strong commitment to fostering a sense of community and nurturing empathy, to support all families in their journey to developing children’s communication. Our mission is to offer a space where collaboration, compassion and excellence can flourish.
Specialising in supporting the language and literacy development of all children
Little Voices Speech Pathology is currently taking appointments for speech, language, literacy and dyslexia assessments. We have an open waiting list for ongoing therapy sessions.
Are you a parent or teacher who is feeling frustrated and confused about how to best support a child who is struggling with reading and spelling?
We hear this every day. Unfortunately, in Australia, there are still so many barriers to get the right support for kids with reading difficulties or dyslexia. There are issues with teacher knowledge, and that’s not their fault. Every teacher I speak with wants to know what they can do to help the kids they teach, they’ve just never been taught how to do it, and don’t know where to look. Then when a teacher does notice that a child is really struggling, and they wonder if it’s dyslexia, they may face hurdles with leadership telling them that’s not their place. And if they are able to discuss their concerns with parents, getting a diagnosis can be a very expensive process. Sometimes dyslexia is known as the rich person’s disability, as it can cost up to $3000 at some places for a full assessment. Then there’s the waiting lists. It’s all so frustrating, and so heartbreaking to watch the kids struggle and not know what to do. We dream of a world where no child ever feels the frustration, despair and crippling anxiety of not learning how to read. It really does have a devastating impact on kids and their families. Read Elise’s blog about some families’ experiences here: The Devastating impact of a late dyslexia diagnosis.
If this sounds familiar to you, we can help. Check out our “ Services ” page for more information about what we offer.

Language and Literacy Development
As a parent, sending your child off to school for the first time can be an emotional experience. On the one hand, you’re proud and excited to see your child enter a new phase of education and growth. On the other hand, you may feel some anxiety and worry about how your child may adjust to the new environment, and how they’ll navigate the new challenges and opportunities throughout their learning journey.
Learning to read and write should be a fun journey of discovery for all children. There's little more exciting for a parent than seeing their young child master the skill of reading. For many children though, learning to read is not as successful as it could be. For many children learning that the strange squiggles they see on paper match the speech sounds they say is not an easy process.
They may not be able to identify the individual sounds that we say in different words. They may not be able to easily learn the relationship between the sounds they say and the letters that represent them. They may have difficulty with aspects of spoken language, such as understanding and learning vocabulary, or structuring spoken sentences. Or they may learn these early skills but come to a hurdle later in school when learning to read becomes about reading to learn.
Unfortunately a number of schools in Australia don't teach reading and writing in the way that many children need in order to develop the skills they require. Or your child may need more repetition or more explicit teaching than school provides them. If you feel this may be the case for your child and you're not sure how best to help them, you're not alone. Please give Little Voices a call to discuss how we may be able to support your child in their journey to become a successful reader and writer.

Why I Became a Speech-Language Pathogist: My SLP Story
What’s your story.
Did you always know what you wanted to do for a career, or did you happen upon your profession another way? What influenced you to take the path you did?
The Frenzied SLPs are sharing their SLP stories with you this week.
I can’t wait to read how each of them arrived in our wonderful profession. Be sure to check out the linky below, to find SLP stories from some of my favorite slpeeps! But first, I would love to share my journey with you too. Here’s how speech-language pathology found me . This is my SLP story.
My son’s kindergarten teacher noticed his three-year-old brother was very hard to understand.
She asked me if I would like to talk to the school speech therapist about him, and see if he needed speech. “But he’s only three, not old enough to go to school,” I said. I knew he had a hard time pronouncing his words. Robin Hood was his favorite “boovie”. He would get mad at his brother and tell him “top it!” He ate his “pood” with his “poon”. He loved when his “tat” would jump up and purr. I tried modeling words for him, but we didn’t have much success.
My son’s doctor had never mentioned anything, so I thought it must still be ok. I had faithfully marked off my son’s developmental milestones in his baby book. It never mentioned intelligibility…I figured he would grow out of it. Right?
In those days, I considered myself a good mom, and I was. I played with my kids, took them to the zoo, to the museum, joined playgroups and scouts, let them dig in the sand, build pillow forts, fingerpaint and cook with me in the kitchen. I truly didn’t know much about speech therapy. I vaguely remembered there had been a “speech teacher” at my elementary school growing up, but I never went to see her. Taking my son to a speech therapist never occurred to me, since he was so little. And I had certainly never heard the term speech-language pathologist.
That was my first real introduction to the profession of speech-language pathology.
After my son’s initial evaluation, there was a meeting. The results were explained to me, along with a lot of terms I was not familiar with. Speech therapy was recommended for him, and I was grateful someone would work with him to help him pronounce his words. He got so frustrated when I couldn’t understand him.
My son had therapy through first grade, then began working on those lingering /l/ and later the /r/ sounds. (He said my first name was “weezette”). By second grade, therapy services had become pretty infrequent, instead of the twice a week he was scheduled for. I think one semester he was seen twice in total.
The school said there was a shortage of therapists, and just hadn’t been able to find enough therapists to cover all the speech students.
Fortunately, with my prompting my son at home, he continued to make progress, and we dismissed him from speech therapy that year.
The following year, I began subbing at the school. I had been a stay-at-home mom for a few years and was considering going back to school. I had my bachelor’s degree in psychology, but I knew that wasn’t really going to help me get a good job without an advanced degree. I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go. I wasn’t interested in becoming a teacher, as so many members of my family had done. I wanted something different.
I was subbing in the early childhood classroom when the speech therapist came in to do a lesson.
The school had found a speech therapist now. She read a story and asked the children questions. They sang a song. I thought, “I could do that.” So I asked her more about it. She told me about the various goals she worked on, vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and listening in addition to articulation. She told me she would be leaving soon to do private therapy for a much bigger and better salary, and how there were so many jobs open at that time for speech-language pathologists in all kinds of settings.
My interest was definitely piqued. I started looking up more information about the profession… and I decided that this was it.
I had found the profession that really seemed right for me. Eureka!
I loved language and science, I enjoyed working with children, and a school-based job would allow me to have summers off with my own children. I headed to grad school, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
This profession has given me such wonderful opportunities to grow, learn, create and help others. It took me a while to find my perfect “niche”, but this is definitely it! I love my job. That’s my SLP story.
I would love to hear your story.
