Safari / Jungle Themed First Birthday Party Part I – Dessert Ideas
August 6, 2014 by Roxy
Last week was a memorable one as we celebrated Daniel’s first birthday party. I can’t believe he’s one year old already! My baby boy is seriously growing up too fast so someone, please stop the time! Choosing a theme for his birthday party was super easy as his favorite toys (apart from empty water bottles, TV remote control & cellphones) are all the plush animals around the house from monkeys to teddy bears to elephants.
This Safari / Jungle Themed First Birthday Party was completely styled by me – from choosing the decorations, designing my own banners to baking a cute jungle cake & his smash cake, cupcakes & cupcake toppers , jungle cookies and making all the finger foods (sushi included!). It’s a great party theme that I’m sure any kid would love regardless of the age and it’s a cute idea for a baby shower as well.
I wanted to make something special for Daniel’s 1 st birthday but at the same time we didn’t want to go overboard and spend a fortune. In this post I’ll show you how to throw a fabulous jungle birthday party on a budget for your little ones. Plus you can print all the labels, pennant banners, jungle animals stickers/toppers for FREE!
I wanted to share all food ideas and party decorations in a single post but it got ridiculously long so I split it into four parts:
- Part I – Dessert Ideas + Jungle Safari Cake
- Part II – Appetizers, Finger Foods & Snack Ideas
- Part III – DIY Decoration Ideas + FREE Printables
- Part IV – Cheap Party Supplies & Decorations
In the following weeks I’ll also post full tutorials with step by step photos for the two cakes I made, fondant cupcake toppers and fondant teddy bear cake topper . For the other food ideas, you can find some of the recipes on my blog and others on some of my favorite blogs/websites…I’ll explain everything in detail in these four posts. So sit back, relax and get ready to enjoy all the photos from our jungle party that will hopefully inspire you!
The cake topper is a fondant replica of our son’s favorite teddy bear.
I made two of these, one for the big cake and the other for his smash cake. Check out the tutorial on how to make this cute little teddy bear .
Talking about this, here’s Daniel’s JUNGLE FIRST BIRTHDAY SMASH CAKE. It’s a five-layer walnut cake (6 inches) filled with the same delicious chocolate walnut cream (full tutorial with step by step photos coming soon!).
And here’s my sweet little Daniel after he smashed his cake, we cleaned him and then he came back to play with his teddy bear , the fondant one that is :)!
Have some bananas around? Then place them in a basket and add a cute label named BANANAS FOR MONKEYS.
More monkey food coming up!
I made an easy BANANA PUDDING FOR MONKEYS. I don’t have a recipe on my blog but I like this Banana Pudding from Epicurious or this Homemade Banana Pudding from the Baker Chick . I adjusted the recipe a bit because I didn’t use any Vanilla wafers but placed half a ladyfinger in each dessert cup… just to keep things simple but still delicious!
Got some BERRIES FOR HIPPOS from the farmer’s market (blueberries, red & yellow raspberries and blackberries), placed them in some cups and made a few cute Hippo Toothpick Stickers (free printable coming soon in Part III of my post!).
Moving on to the cupcakes…oh my, I had so much fun decorating these JUNGLE ANIMALS CUPCAKES. They were Lemon Blueberry Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting from Annie’s Eats. I’ve made Annie’s cupcakes before and loved them so decided to go with this recipe for the party.
I made every single JUNGLE ANIMAL FONDANT CUPCAKE TOPPER – from lions, teddy bears, monkeys to hippos, giraffes, tigers and elephants. Plus a few toppers with number one but you can personalize these based on your little one’s age.
If you don’t want to spend the extra time to make your own fondant toppers no worries, I’ve got you covered! You (can) will be able to download for FREE my Jungle Animals Cupcake Toppers that I’ll provide shortly in Part III of my post. Just print them on heavy cardstock paper, cut them out, tape them to ice cream sticks or toothpicks and pop them on cupcakes! Cute and simple decorations!
After all these yummy desserts I bet everyone is thirsty so let’s not forget the JUNGLE JUICE! Buy one of those water/juice glass jars with a faucet or borrow one from your friends (like I did 🙂 ). We filled it with orange peach mango juice but you could use anything you like.
Oh, I almost forgot, my Nutella Peanut Butter Monkey Cupcakes would be just perfect for this party theme as well!
Since I’ve been asked before what I use to bake and decorate my cakes, cookies and cupcakes here are some of the items:
And Daniel’s cute teddy bear in case you were wondering where I got it from :):
This must be the longest post ever but I truly hope it will help many parents out there organize an awesome Safari / Jungle Birthday Party on a budget. If you’ve found this useful I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Wild One: A Jungle Themed 1st Birthday Party
A Jungle-Themed 1st Birthday Party
Are you ready to go wild for your little one’s first birthday party? If so, then a “wild one” jungle safari theme might be the perfect choice for you! This fun and adventurous theme is sure to create memories that will last a lifetime.
For decorations, think green and jungle-inspired. Hang green streamers from the ceiling to create a lush jungle canopy, and scatter fake palm leaves around the party space. You can also set up a cute display with green streamers and ONE blocks to mark the special occasion.
To set the tone for your jungle safari themed party, start by sending out invitations that feature adorable animals like lions, tigers, and monkeys. You can also include a cute little rhyming phrase like “Join us for a wild adventure as we celebrate our little one turning one!”
Adding a jungle-themed cake with little animals is the perfect way to tie in the theme of your “wild one” jungle safari party. You can get creative with the design of the cake, incorporating cute jungle animals like lions, elephants, and monkeys. Fondant or plastic figurines can be used to decorate the cake, or you can opt for a more simple design with animal print patterns or palm tree decorations.
I enjoy incorporating themed quotes as decorations for parties. Printing a quote and placing it in a frame can be the ideal (and cost-effective!) way to enhance the décor. Dollar Tree offers a wide selection of frames that are perfect for this purpose!
One of the highlights of any birthday party is the food, and for a jungle safari theme, you can get creative with animal-shaped sugar cookies. Use cookie cutters to make cookies in the shapes of lions, elephants, and giraffes, and then decorate them with colorful icing.
In addition to the cake, you can also serve a variety of jungle-themed food to keep your guests satisfied. Here are a few ideas for jungle-inspired dishes that will delight both kids and adults:
To keep your guests cool and refreshed, set up a palm tree cooler filled with drinks like jungle juice (a mix of fruit juices) and water. Fill the container with ice and drinks, and your guests will love the tropical touch
No jungle safari party is complete without some fun activities for the little ones. Set up a jungle-themed photo booth with props like safari hats and animal masks, and let the kids have a blast taking pictures. You can also have a jungle scavenger hunt where the kids search for hidden animal toys or treats around the party space.
For party favors, consider giving out small stuffed animals or animal-shaped cookies for the kids to take home. You can also create cute jungle-themed goodie bags filled with stickers, temporary tattoos, and animal crackers.
Overall, a “wild one” jungle safari themed first birthday party is sure to be a hit with both kids and adults alike. With adorable decorations, tasty treats, and fun activities, your little one’s special day will be one to remember for years to come. So get ready to go wild and celebrate in style!

Embark on a journey into the wild with a Safari birthday party , perfect for the little explorer in your life. This party theme offers a unique blend of adventure and education, allowing kids to discover the wonders of wildlife and nature.
In this Safari birthday party guide, we’ll take a walk on the wild side and show you how to organize an unforgettable safari expedition right in your backyard or living room!
Begin with invitations that evoke the excitement of a safari adventure. Use earth tones and animal prints, and include imagery of exotic animals and jungle foliage. Phrases like “Join Us for a Wild Time at [Child’s Name]’s Safari Birthday Expedition” set the tone for an adventurous day.
Invite guests to come dressed as explorers, or provide safari vests, hats, and binoculars to get everyone in character for the adventure ahead.
Transform your space into a lush jungle or savannah:
- Safari Base Camp : Set up a tent or create a canopy with green streamers to serve as the party’s base camp.
- Animal Prints and Greenery : Use tablecloths and balloons in zebra, leopard, and giraffe prints. Accent with lots of green plants or paper leaves to mimic the dense foliage of the jungle.
- DIY Jeep Photo Booth : Create a cardboard jeep for a fun photo op, complete with safari hats and binoculars as props.
Keep your little explorers engaged with safari-themed activities:
- Animal Scavenger Hunt : Hide animal figurines around the party area for kids to find using clues or a map.
- Safari Obstacle Course : Set up an obstacle course that simulates a jungle adventure, complete with vine swings (rope swings), quicksand (a pool of balls), and a river crossing.
- Wildlife Education : Invite a wildlife educator or use educational videos to teach kids about different animals they might encounter on a safari.
Serve up treats that are both delicious and in theme:
- Animal Sandwiches : Use animal-shaped cookie cutters for sandwiches, cookies, or fruit slices.
- Jungle Juice : Green punch or smoothies served in safari-themed cups or with animal straw toppers.
- Safari Snack Mix : A mix of dried fruits, nuts, and animal crackers to fuel the little explorers.
Create a centerpiece dessert that’s as wild as the party theme :
- Safari Animal Cake : Decorate a cake with fondant animals, edible grass, and a waterhole for a stunning safari scene.
- Jungle Cupcakes : Top cupcakes with animal print icing or small toy animals. Use green frosting to mimic grass or leaves.
Thank your little guests for joining the safari with themed party favors:
- Explorer Kits : Small bags containing a magnifying glass, a mini flashlight, and an animal fact book.
- Safari Survival Packs : Goodie bags with animal stickers, safari-themed pencils, and a compass.
Conclude the party with a group “animal call” contest or a storytelling session about a great safari adventure, allowing kids to use their imaginations to recount their own wild tales from the day.
A Safari birthday party is an extraordinary way to celebrate, filled with exploration, learning, and fun. This guide ensures that your little adventurer and their friends will have a roaring good time, creating memories that are as lasting as the wild itself. Here’s to a birthday celebration that’s truly an adventure of a lifetime!

Cue the jungle beats and get ready to start a wild adventure because we’re about to dive into the ultimate guide to throwing the most memorable safari-themed first birthday bash.
This enchanting theme takes all who dare enter on a wild adventure they won’t forget.
It’s not just about fun and games (although there’s plenty of that!).
So, grab your pith helmet, hop into our imaginary safari jeep, and let’s get inspired with over 37 ideas we carefully selected for you!
37+ Best Ideas for Safari Themed 1st Birthday
From decorating ideas that’ll make your living room feel like the Serengeti to jungle-themed snacks that even the pickiest little eaters will adore, we’ve got your back.
Celebrating Life’s First Milestone with Uniqueness
A child’s first birthday is an emotional milestone for both the little one and their parents.
It commemorates survival through sleepless nights, unknown challenges, countless diaper changes, but more importantly, it celebrates growth – in size, knowledge, personality traits – and infinite love that only deepens with each passing day.
An event as monumental as this deserves to be celebrated uniquely; it isn’t just another tick mark on life’s timeline but a testament to how beautifully everyone involved has evolved in a year.
A safari themed 1st birthday party fits perfectly as it brings together joyous celebration with unforgettable adventures- much like this incredible journey called parenthood.
Safari Themed 1st Birthday Party: Decorations to Bring the Jungle Home
As we start this adventure into designing the perfect safari themed 1st birthday party one must not overlook the influential power of decorations.
These tactile elements play a vital role in painting a vivid picture and creating an immersive atmosphere.
For this theme, your home needs to transform into an enchanting wilderness where lions roar, monkeys swing from branches, and elephants trumpet with glee.
Balloon Animals and Trees
Balloons have long been synonymous with parties. But for our safari themed 1st birthday party , let’s elevate their status beyond mere floating adornments.
Picture balloon animals prancing about – giraffes stretching their long necks near corners, zebras adding stripes of excitement across rooms or even snakes slithering down stair rails!
Tree-shaped balloons can further contribute to the jungle vibe by bringing some ‘green canopy’ into your living room.
Jungle Vines and Leaves
Vines cascading from ceilings and leaves scattered around can construct an all-encompassing foliage effect.
Consider using faux ivy vines for a lush, verdant aura; they’re cost-effective, easy to install and look surprisingly authentic.
Don’t hesitate to let them drape over tables, chairs or doorways.
For the leaves use various shapes and shades of green cardstock paper cutouts strewn across tabletops or stuck onto walls.
Animal Print Tablecloths and Banners
No safari décor would be complete without showcasing some iconic animal prints!
Zebra-striped tablecloths or leopard-spotted runners on tables make for eye-catching accents.
Animal print banners flapping gently against walls add striking visual dynamics that keep attention engaged yet subtly remind guests that they are indeed in wild territory.
DIY Decoration Ideas to Add Personal Touch
To make your safari themed 1st birthday party truly unique, consider sprinkling a dash of DIY magic.
How about an enticing entryway adorned with a homemade “Welcome to the Jungle” sign?
Or personalized animal footprints leading to different activity zones?
You could also create a beautiful backdrop for photographs using strips of crepe paper in varying shades of green and jungle-themed cutouts.
The sky’s the limit when it comes to adding personal touches that reflect your creativity while enhancing the safari ambiance.
Adorable Safari Outfits for Your Safari Themed 1st Birthday Party
The star of our safari-themed celebration, the birthday baby, should undoubtedly have an attire that shouts ‘jungle jubilance’.
Opt for something comfortable, yet fits the theme perfectly.
A onesie featuring a cute animal print, like giraffes or elephants, may be an ideal choice.
Or perhaps your little one would look tremendously cute in a mini explorer outfit – imagine khaki shorts and a matching shirt with tiny hiking boots to boot!
However, if you really wish to raise the bar of adorableness, consider costuming your child as their favorite safari animal.
From frisky lion cubs to tiny twitching zebras and charming baby monkeys – there are many options that can make your little one’s first birthday pictures unforgettable.
Adventurous Activities & Games for Your Safari Themed 1st Birthday Party
In a safari-themed party, even the most traditional party games can don an exciting new camouflage!
One such classic is ‘Pin the Tail on the Lion.’
This whimsical adaptation of ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’ involves blindfolded little explorers trying their luck at attaching a yarn tail onto a poster of a majestic King of the Jungle.
You could make this even more enchanting by crafting your lion poster using felt or another tactile material.
In this way, you add an additional sensory layer to your game that will no doubt enrapture your tiny guests.
Another idea is to host a mini ‘safari hunt,’ where children search for hidden stuffed animals around the party area.
For older kids, clues or riddles can be used in this quest to locate different wildlife ‘species.’
This not only enlivens their adventurous spirit but also subtly introduces them to various wild creatures.
As we conclude this safari through our imaginative jungle party landscape, remember that parties are as joyous and unique as the children they celebrate.
From animal-shaped balloons dancing overhead to themed dress-ups transforming little guests into wilderness explorers – every minute detail discussed underscores creativity at its best.
The beauty lies not just in experiencing these magical moments but also capturing them for posterity’s sake; as a snippet that remains long after the day has passed — a snapshot transcending time.
So here’s hoping that your safari themed 1st birthday party is filled with roars of laughter and wild fun; may it be an exciting adventure where beautiful memories are born.
