Stay: Cooktown, The Sovereign Resort Hotel

Daintree rainforest boardwalk, Queensland

Quinkan Country, Laura, Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park, Musgrave

Insider experience.

An Indigenous guide takes you through Quinkan Country, which UNESCO ranks as one of the top 10 rock art places in the world. The guide introduces you to Split Rock, the most famous of the Quinkan sites, where illustrations of spirit being figures, native animals and totems were painted between 15,000 and 40,000 years ago.

Following your Quinkan Country visit, continue to the heritage-listed Old Laura Homestead. Later, drive into Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park, where you will find a range of animals, including crocodiles and wallabies, as well as plentiful bird life.

Stay: Musgrave Roadhouse

Coen, Weipa

Explore the old gold mining town of Coen, where the precious metal was first discovered in 1876. When the Great Northern Mine was established in 1893 Coen underwent a boom period, but by 1916 the mine was closed and the town resumed its quiet existence. Afterwards stop at the Archer River Roadhouse for lunch, halfway along your day’s travels. Then resume your journey to the town of Weipa, the largest community on the Cape York Peninsula.

Stay: Weipa, Albatross Bay Resort

Weipa, Bramwell Station

Today you can enjoy a relaxing boat trip from Weipa (additional charge), learning about the area’s ecology, mining industry and Indigenous culture as you look for saltwater crocodiles. Afterwards, travel to Bramwell Station.

Stay: Bramwell Station

Fruit Bat Falls, Cape York

Check out Bramwell Junction’s imposing termite mounds before heading to Fruit Bat Falls, where you can enjoy a cooling swim in the clear waters of the Elliott River. Take a ferry across the Jardine River, then head north through the traditional land of the Injinoo people.

Stay: Two Nights, Cape York Peninsula Lodge

Tip of Cape York

Walk this morning to the tip of Cape York Peninsula and revel in standing at the northernmost point of the Australian mainland. The views over the turquoise sea and offshore islands of Torres Strait are sublime.

Today, celebrate being among the most northerly people on the Australian continent as you wind along a 4WD track to Frangipani Beach, on the western side of Cape York just below the tip. Later, continue to historic Somerset Hill, the site of a station established by John Jardine in 1863 – the first European settlement on Cape York. From Somerset Beach there are fine views of Albany Island, just offshore. Here, learn the stories of ‘Jackey Jackey’, an early Indigenous guide, and Frank Jardine, the son of the station’s founder, who became the local police magistrate and was involved in numerous killings of Indigenous people.

Thursday Island, Horn Island, Cairns

Take the ferry across the picturesque Endeavour Strait to fascinating Thursday Island. Once a pearling centre, Thursday Island became a major defence post during World War II. The labyrinth of tunnels and rooms at Green Hill Fort now house the Torres Strait Museum. You’ll then take the local ferry to Horn Island, where you will board your flight to Cairns, enjoying the magnificence of the Great Barrier Reef from a bird’s-eye view en route. Your journey ends at Cairns Airport.

Day 1 Cairns - Cooktown

Tour Melbourne Image

Moments after departing Cairns you're amid the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics of Queensland. Cross the Daintree River and you’re on your way to Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef. You’re not here to dive in – your journey takes you off-road along the 4WD Bloomfield Track. Legends (and myths) await at Black Mountain, sometimes dubbed the Bermuda Triangle of Australia.

Day 2 Cooktown - Musgrave

Today you're in Quinkan Country, home to one of Australia best-preserved rock-art sites. Nearby, Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park is big in more ways than one, from its enormous waterlily-covered billabongs to its unfathomable number of birds.

Day 3 Musgrave - Weipa

The historic gold town of Coen may be small in size, but it’s got plenty of country swagger. Bauxite mining was the reason the tiny town of Weipa was formed. Today, visitors arrive for blazing sunsets over the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Day 4 Weipa - Bramwell

How do you want to spend your pre-lunch hours? Perhaps on an optional Weipa Wildlife & Eco Cruise, revealing First Nations culture and wildlife. Or dig deep on a bauxite mine tour. How these rocks are pulled from the ground is head-scratching. As is the size of Bramwell Station, Australia’s northernmost cattle station and your base for the night.

Day 5 Bramwell - Seisia

Your early start today is worth it when you arrive at Fruit Bat Falls for lunch. Dive in, splash about, cool off, unwind. There’s not much between you and Cape York; cross the Jardine River and you’re there. Seisia is the departure point for ferries to Thursday Island and fishing charters. It’s also the gateway to tomorrow’s adventures.

Day 6 Cape York - Somerset

Not many people can say they’ve stood at the very top of mainland Australia at Somerset, the first European settlement on the Cape York Peninsula. Lunch is served on palm fringed Anchorage Beach overlooking the Albany Passage.

Day 7 Seisia - Thursday Island - Cairns

Rich in Aboriginal culture, history and natural beauty, Thursday Island is the capital of the Torres Strait Islands. Time might stand still here, but you won’t – you’re on a guided tour before heading to Horn Island to board your aircraft, flying over the Great Barrier Reef back to Cairns. Wait, how did this week pass so quickly?

Please note: This itinerary may be subject to change.

Breakfast consists of a choice of at least 3 cereals, toast, and spreads, and occasionally a fully cooked breakfast is made. Lunch has a variety of cold meats and a selection of salad vegetables. With more time available in the evenings, our staff can concentrate on their culinary talents and present a complete 2-course meal. We begin with nibbles and ‘happy hour’; the main course could be a grill, roast, or casserole. An appropriate selection of vegetables is generally served with the main course, followed by a tasty dessert. If a passenger is on a medically prescribed diet, we will do our absolute utmost to cater suitable meals for that person. Before booking your tour, it is suggested that you contact our office to discuss such diets to assess suitability.

Participation All tours are conducted on a partial participation basis; it generates friendship and conversation. Assistance with vegetable peeling, firewood collection, and filling water buckets is greatly appreciated. Passengers assist with washing and wiping dishes and erecting their own tents after a demonstration; those less agile will of course be given assistance by the tour guides

Alcohol The government has imposed very strict alcohol regulations throughout the Cape York Peninsula and our company has a permit to carry certain quantities of alcohol and complies with all regulations and laws. Please do not bring any alcohol on tour. There is an Honesty Tin for drinks (beer & wine only). Any surplus money above the cost to purchase is donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Cash On Hand It is usually recommended for each person to take some CASH spending money. Obviously, this depends on the number of souvenirs you intend to purchase (a tee-shirt will cost on average $25- $40, artifacts up to $500). Also, keep in mind that alcohol can be double the usual price in some places. Whilst modern ‘conveniences’ are on the increase in remote areas, including EFTPOS, do not rely heavily on there being cash out, however, Credit Card facilities are generally available at most stops.

Electrical Telephones, cameras, and other electrical devices can be charged in the vehicle with our inverter. Mains power is available in Cooktown, Cooks Hut Accommodation, Weipa, Bramwell, and Cape York Seisia Beach

Phones Telstra Next G network currently offers the best coverage in regional areas but does not work in remote areas. All vehicles are equipped with Satellite phones, but these phones are for emergency use only

Smoking As per government regulations, smoking is not permitted in vehicles. Ample stops provide time for “smoking breaks”. Smokers are asked to dispose of their cigarette butts in a responsible manner and not on the ground.

Vehicle Seating Vehicle seats are individual: Which are all facing frontwards NOT side seating. Vehicle suspensions are modified to ride as comfortably as possible but the roads to Cape York can be extremely corrugated and rough in places. All seats are facing frontwards for good viewing for each passenger. Clients are moved around each day in the vehicle so everyone can experience all the different views.

Toilets and Showers Toilets and showers are available each night and morning of the tour. Toilets are either flushing or composting type.

Caravan Park Accommodation There are three Caravan Parks to choose from with limited storage options available at one of these properties. The Caravan Parks usually request a minimum stay of at least 4 nights pre/post tour to store your caravan/car/campervan/motorhome. Storage prices are anywhere from $30-$40 per night. These Caravan Parks are located all around the Cairns region and if applicable to your chosen tour itinerary your 4WD safari vehicle will either pick up or drop you off at your chosen Caravan Park. We are happy to book this for you or provide you with these Caravan Park options once your selected tour booking has been confirmed. Should passengers choose to stay elsewhere, we can advise you which pick-up point is the closest to your chosen accommodation.

Motel Accommodation We work with a local motel located in the Cairns CBD that offers quality, clean, and a range of good value room styles (see below). The room styles and rates listed below include free Wi-Fi, guest laundry, swimming pool & luggage storage whilst you are on tour. Your tour bus will pick you up and drop you off at the front door of the motel. We have just returned from Cape York. We booked this trip through you. So we thought we had better let you know of the wonderful time we had. The 3 tour guides were very experienced fantastic, knowledgeable, fun and willing to assist in any way. The accommodation was not always in tents and the nights we were not in tents we were in very special places and the accommodation was awesome! We had no idea it was going to be this good! The standards were very high! The accommodation owners were also so friendly, experienced, informative, accommodating and helpful. Given Covid, everything was managed exceptionally. The tour was very well planned out and nothing was omitted. Each and everyday had its own surprises and unique adventures. Let us not forget to mention the food! All Meals made and served off the beaten track were scrumptious and more than sufficient. We enjoyed steak on 3 occasions and have never tasted it so tender. Cooked to perfection. Meals out were also of the highest quality. All restaurants, cafes, hotels and eating places provided some of the best meals we have ever enjoyed. Great choices by the organizers once again. There was never a shortage of food anywhere or anytime either. Lunch and morning tea spots were well chosen with great views, nature and atmosphere. We have no hesitation in recommending this tour to anyone and are in fact doing so. Thanks so much for coupling us up with this small but exceptional tour group. They certainly earned their money. Thanks, with very fond memories of Kathy, Terry, lan, Peter and Mooks. Ian and Sylvia

Thank you all for an absolutely fabulous trip these last few weeks. The guys were brilliant – you should be very proud of them. So knowledgeable, helpful, patient and friendly. The country they showed us was amazing and so full of history. It will be my mission now to spread the word about your wonderful tours. My thoughts are with you in this difficult time and I really hope things start to pick up. I am so grateful for the experience you and the boys have given me. Many thanks. Julie

Fantastic! Loved every minute! Every day was an amazing adventure. Loved the small group and vehicle. Very social, fun, great food. Lots of surprises along the way. This is the only way to experience Cape York. I will be back, thanks for everything! Marianne

A truly fabulous experience – good company, great cook/guides/driver – top notch grub. Many thanks. Colin

We found the tour extremely interesting with very friendly guides. We enjoyed all the activities and lunches. Please don’t change a thig – you do it so well! It has been a pleasure to share the days with you. Moros

Thank you for a wonderful trip. Great food, great company. The information on the Cape, the special spots where we stayed and where we had our lunches were excellent. Top job, glad we came. Greg & Flo

Cannot express how much of an incredible adventure I experienced on the 15 day Camping tour just recently. I was able to reminisce my younger hippy days at Cedar Bay from the 70’s. Ian , Nev and Terry were a great bunch of blokes whose passion for the Cape was outstanding by able to deliver us so much local knowledge and stories from the area. The food was fantastic and we had lots of it as I am a big eater. The small side trips off the main itinerary were amazing. To be able to do a chopper ride from Roku Island around the Torres Strait Islands and the tip was both incredible and unforgettable. I am seriously looking to do another trip with your company as you really know how to look after your fellow travellers. John

Unless otherwise noted on the itinerary, all campsites have excellent amenities including toilets and hot showers.

Approx 220km

Welcome to Cape York. You are met on arrival at Bamaga Airport by your Guide with your vehicle. First up, a short drive into Bamaga (pop:1,200), the administration centre for the Northern Peninsular Area, where you can stock up on personal snack and beverage items at the Bamaga supermarket. Your fridge will be cold and ready. From Bamaga you travel down the Development road (PDR) to Bramwell Station. Along the way you will cross the famous croc infested Jardine River by ferry. The Jardine River effectively cuts off the tip of Cape York from the rest of the cape. You will also stop into the beautiful Fruit Bat Falls for lunch and a swim. Dinner tonight is provided by your campsite hosts at Bramwell Station, previously a working cattle property offering spacious camping grounds, and on most visits while enjoying dinner and a beverage from the bar, their staff provide entertainment. (BLD)

Approx: 92km

Get set for more adventure as you tackle the Overland telegraph Track, (OTT). Famous worldwide and acknowledged by 4WD enthusiasts as one of Australia’s most iconic 4WD experiences, it will be one of the many highlights of your holiday. It is a short drive from Bramwell Station to Bramwell Junction and the famous signpost marking the starting point for the OTT. After the compulsory group pic, the fun begins. Today you will be negotiating the obstacles on the southern portion of the track. The aim is to camp tonight on the track at the beautiful National Parks Camp site at Eliot Falls. There will be plenty to chat about tonight over dinner. Remember your Guide will be with you to assist and guide you every inch of the way. Overcoming the obstacles that punctuate the OTT is a lot of fun. At Gunshot, one of the most notorious creek crossings of the dozens you will encounter, a good-natured crowd of fellow 4wdrivers gather to cheer and encourage everyone through. On all trips, it is possible that some obstacles will not be tackled if your guide believes conditions are not favourable. At some obstacles there are alternative tracks, known as cheat tracks, that can be utilised. Overall, this day will be remembered as one of your most exciting 4wd experiences. (BLD)

Approx: 120km

Up early for breakfast and set off to complete sections of track at the northern end of the OTT. If all goes to plan, you will finish the OTT this morning and cross the famous croc infested Jardine River by ferry. The Jardine River effectively cuts off the tip of Cape York from the rest of the cape. A stop for resupply in the town of Bamaga  (pop:1,200), the administration centre for the Northern Peninsular Area, before a short drive to the coast and the beachfront campsite at Loyalty Beach. This will be your base for the next two nights as you complete the final part of your journey to the Tip of Australia. (BLD)

Approx: 100km

An exciting day ahead as you depart camp after breakfast to reach the most northern Tip of Australia. After a short drive through a variety of scenic bushland, and a brisk walk, you will arrive at Pajinka, and the Tip sign, ready to pose for your commemorative pic. It was a great achievement to have driven from Cairns to the Tip of Australia and a journey we feel sure will only bring back happy memories for years to come. The action does not stop here. You still have the Five Beaches Track to drive, and if so inclined, last minute souvenir shopping at the Croc Tent, a cape institution and fashion house. Thongs and t shirts are their fashion specialty. If you look hard enough you might even find a Cape York snow shaker. Back to Loyalty to enjoy the traditional ‘Fish and Chips’ farewell dinner at the Loyalty Beach Restaurant. Sunsets can be spectacular. A lovely way to finish your last night at the cape. (BLD)

Tour finishes this morning after breakfast in camp at Loyalty. If you have booked your morning departure flight for today, your guides will transfer you to Bamaga Airport in time for check in. (B) Alternatively, you may like to extend your stay at the Cape to continue your adventure exploring the Torres Strait where your guides can drop you at Siasia Wharf ferry terminal in time for the 8am ferry to Thursday Island.

9 DAYS - CAPE YORK DRIVE/FLY

Cairns to the tip, itinerary: (northbound) - drive cairns to the tip.

Approx 162 Km

Meet your fellow adventurers for breakfast at the Thirsty Flamingo Eatery and Bar, poolside at our Cairns base, the Cairns Colonial Club Resort. A team briefing will be conducted. Following breakfast, you will be introduced to your Croc and once final paperwork is completed, and you pack your vehicle, it’s time to depart Cairns. Items not required on tour can be left in storage at the Resort. First stop is the supermarket to stock your fridge with snack items and drinks. It’s a leisurely drive this morning northward along the scenic Captain Cook Highway. You stop at Mossman Gorge to explore a fascinating remnant of the world’s oldest rainforest, before a break for lunch. After lunch enjoy a crocodile spotting cruise on the Daintree River, with ecofriendly operator Solar Whisper. This is more than a croc cruise as the local guide, is an expert on all the wildlife in the area. After crossing the Daintree River by ferry, journey along the coast to Cape Tribulation where rainforest meets the reef when two world heritage listed areas join – the Daintree National Park and The Great Barrier Reef. Tonight, camp, or stay in cabin accommodation at a jungle camp. (BLD)

Approx: 110Km

Heading off this morning at a leisurely pace through the rainforest surrounding Cape Tribulation, it’s not long before you arrive at the start of the sealed Bloomfield Track. The Bloomfield Track provides an easy introduction to 4wdriving. After completing this section, it’s a short drive to historic Cooktown where there will be some free time to explore. Highly recommended is a visit to the Cooktown Museum. Other attractions today include Black Mountain with its amazing rock formations. Tonight’s camp at the historic 1880’s Lions Den Hotel is a very popular stopover for Cape bound adventurers. (BLD)

Approx: 303Km

Today your adventure will absorb you into beautiful Aussie bush scenery providing good photography opportunities. Driving mainly on gravel backroads, the pace will be leisurely. Highlights include the journey through Lakefield National Park, with its many lagoon areas. Late afternoon you will arrive at the main Cape Road at Musgrave Roadhouse, one of the many legendary Cape Roadhouses you will visit on your adventure. This will be your campsite tonight. At sunset, the manager feeds the freshwater crocs in the campsite dam. (BLD)

Approx: 280Km

As is our policy, to enjoy the Aussie bush to the fullest, today you will travel the less used roads and tracks, away from the main tourist route. After leaving camp, head off the main highway and follow a variety of tracks and backroads. Still heading northwards, the changes in terrain and scenery will keep you fascinated. Driving conditions are comfortable, but you must always be alert and attentive to potential road hazards which can appear around any corner. Be prepared to navigate a washout or two and the occasionally deeply rutted sections. The small historic township of Coen (pop:364) is a welcome stop for snack and water resupply. If time allows a visit to the museum and one quick cold beverage at the quirky S-Exchange Hotel may be possible.  On every day, your guide ‘carries the billy’ and will be on the lookout for a suitable rest stop to stretch the legs and for a morning or afternoon tea break. Camp tonight is one of our favourites. Chuulangun is a peaceful bush camp with a basic but clean bush toilet and a classic ‘donkey’ hot water shower setup. (BLD)

Approx: 154 Km

An exciting and fun 4wdriving day as you tackle one of our favourite Cape Tracks, the 53K Frenchmans Track. It meanders narrowly in places, through a variety of terrains including dense forest areas. The track is seldom, if ever, used by ‘tourist traffic’ and only keen 4wdrivers take it on. Remember, your Guide will be with you every inch of the way to assist you navigate the tricky sections and teach you the occasional 4wd trick. This track also has an infamous reputation due to its two river crossings, the Pascoe and the Wenlock Rivers. Both these rivers feature steepish approach and exit angles and water levels fluctuate throughout the season, sometimes making one or both nearly impassable. Though we only travel in the ‘best weather months’, on all occasions you will be directed by your Guide as to safety and viability of attempting these crossings. You must be aware that on any day, you may not be able to achieve your daily itinerary due to road or weather conditions. In that case, an alternative plan may have to be designed. It’s all part of exploration in the Cape. Dinner tonight is provided by your campsite hosts at Bramwell Station, a working cattle property offering spacious camping grounds, and on most visits while enjoying dinner and a beverage from the bar, their staff provide entertainment.

Thongs and t shirts are their fashion speciality. (BLD)

ITINERARY NOTES: 1. Depending on when you wish to arrive in Cairns before your tour commences, a minimum of one nights pre booked accommodation at the Cairns Colonial Club Resort, is required for the night before your scheduled tour departure. Cairns to Tip

The tip to cairns.

9day-C-to-Tip

9 DAYS - CAPE YORK FLY/DRIVE

The tip to cairns, itinerary: (southbound) - drive the tip to cairns.

After breakfast, head off on a relaxed scenic drive, followed by a short walk to arrive at Pajinka, the most northern point of Australia. What a great way to start your adventure. After the compulsory picture at the famous Tip sign, next up is an exhilarating driving experience along the beautiful Five Beaches Track. This track provides the perfect venue for you to learn more about the handling characteristics of your personal Cape Croc. Remember, your Guide will be with you every inch of the journey to assist if necessary. Additionally, all vehicles are connected by UHF radio for easy communication. Once off the Five Beaches Track, a stop at the Croc Tent is compulsory as no Cape York trip is complete without a Croc Tent souvenir. Back to Loyalty Beach campsite and a traditional ‘Fish and Chips” sunset dinner on the beach at the Loyalty Beach Restaurant and Bar. (BLD)

Up early for breakfast and set off to complete sections of the northern part of the Old Telegraph Track (OTT). Famous worldwide and acknowledged by 4wd enthusiasts as one of Australia’s most iconic 4wd experiences, it will be one of the many highlights of your holiday. First off, you must cross the crocodile infested Jardine River by ferry. The Jardine River effectively separates the Tip of Australia from the rest of Cape York. Once on the OTT, you can enjoy a refreshing swim at Fruit Bat Falls and navigate some of the 4wd obstacles that make the OTT legendary. Bush camp tonight is at the National Parks campsite at Eliot Falls. Toilets available but no showers. A refreshing dip at the falls, without soap is a better substitute than a shower. (BLD)

Get set for a full day of 4wd action as you tackle the southern section of the OTT. Overcoming the obstacles that punctuate the OTT is a lot of fun. At Gunshot, one of the most notorious creek crossings of the many you will encounter today, a good-natured crowd of fellow 4wdrivers sometimes gather to cheer and encourage everyone through. On all trips, it is possible that some obstacles will not be tackled if your Guide believes conditions are not favourable. There are several alternative tracks known as cheat tracks that can be utilised if required. Overall, this day will be remembered as one of your most exciting 4wd experiences. As you depart the track at Bramwell Junction, stop and take a commemorative pic at the track signpost. From here it is a short drive down a section of the main Cape Road, called the Peninsular Development Road (PDR), to your camp at Bramwell Station, a working cattle station with spacious campgrounds popular with all Cape travellers. Dinner and entertainment tonight is provided by the station staff. There will be a lot to chat about over dinner as you recount the adventures of the previous two days. (BLD)

Another exciting and fun 4wdriving day awaits as you tackle the 53Km Frenchmans Track. One of our favourite cape tracks, it meanders narrowly in places, through a variety of terrains including dense forest areas. The track is seldom used by ‘tourist traffic’ and only keen 4wdrivers take it on. Your Guide will assist you in navigating the tricky sections and teach you the occasional 4wd trick. This track also has an infamous reputation due to its two river crossings, the Pascoe and the Wenlock Rivers. Both rivers feature steepish approach and exit angles and water levels can fluctuate throughout the season, sometimes making one or both nearly impassable. On all occasions you will be directed by your Guide as to the safety and viability of attempting these crossings. If a river is unpassable, which is highly unlikely, an alternative route will be required. Camp tonight at Chuulangun, a peaceful bush camp with a basic but clean bush toilet and a classic ‘donkey’ hot water shower setup. (BLD)

When you leave camp today you will soon reconnect to the PDR. Once past the Archer River Roadhouse you continue south to the small historic township of Coen (pop:364) for a fuel stop and personal snack and beverage resupply. If time allows, it might be possible to visit the museum and have one cold beverage at the quirky S-Exchange Hotel. As is our policy to enjoy the Aussie bush to the fullest, you depart the main road at Coen and will travel less used roads and tracks. Still heading southwards, the changes in terrain and scenery will keep you fascinated. Driving conditions are comfortable, but you must always be alert and attentive to potential road hazards which can appear around any corner. Be prepared to navigate a washout and the occasional deeply rutted section. On every day, your Guide ‘carries the billy’ and will be on the lookout for suitable rest stops to stretch the legs and for a morning or afternoon tea break. Another nice campsite tonight at Musgrave Roadhouse. Late each afternoon, the manager feeds the freshwater crocs in the campsite dam.(BLD)

You spend most of today on backroads enjoying beautiful Aussie bush scenery and good photography opportunities as you journey through Lakefield National Park. With many beautiful lagoon areas, the park provides a wonderful haven for a large variety of birdlife. Camp tonight at the 1880’s Lions Den Hotel, a famous stopover for adventurers journeying to and from Cape York. (BLD)

A leisurely day, and a first up visit to Cooktown with free time to explore. The museum is a must see. From Cooktown head down the Bloomfield Track, your last and easy 4WD experience for the trip. Your destination is Cape Tribulation, a unique spot where reef meets rainforest and two world heritage areas collide, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree National Park. The region features lush rainforest, with waterfalls and lookouts to enjoy. Your last night is either in rustic cabins or camped at a rainforest camp area with bar facilities. Farewell group dinner tonight. (BLD)

A relaxed drive this morning through lush tropical scenery. After crossing the Daintree River by ferry, enjoy a crocodile spotting cruise on the Daintree River, with ecofriendly operator Solar Whisper. This is more than a croc cruise as your local guide is an expert on all the wildlife in the area. After lunch, stop at Mossman Gorge to explore a fascinating remnant of the world’s oldest rainforest. The Captain Cook Highway which hugs the ocean shore provides a wonderful drive into Cairns to conclude your adventure.

Your adventure finishes on arrival at the Cairns Colonial Club Resort. (BL)

ITINERARY NOTES: 1. Participation on this tour requires a flight on Day 1 from Cairns to Bamaga. It is recommended that we arrange this for you.

2. Depending on when you arrive in Cairns and your pre tour plans, we also recommend that you take advantage of our excellent group accommodation rates at the Cairns Colonial Club Resort and at a minimum have the night booked at the resort before your Day 1 departure from Cairns. This will also allow you to conveniently store any unwanted luggage for the tour at the resort for collection on return.

3. As the tour finishes at the Resort mid to late afternoon on Day 9, it may also be convenient for you to have this night accommodation booked by us at the resort. This will enable a leisurely unloading of your vehicle and an unrushed and comfortable end of your holiday arrangements. If you wish to extend your holiday in the Cairns area, we can also assist with those arrangements. Please contact us to discuss.

11 DAYS - CAPE YORK DRIVE/FLY

Approx: 162Km Early rise for breakfast with the group at the Thirsty Flamingo. Tonight, you will camp, or stay in cabin accommodation at a jungle camp. (BLD)

Approx: 110Km Heading off this morning at a leisurely pace along the coastline road through the Daintree National Park, it’s not long before you arrive at the start of the Bloomfield Track. The Bloomfield Track provides a very easy introduction to 4wdriving. (BLD)

Approx: 303Km Today your adventure will absorb you into beautiful Aussie bush scenery providing good photography opportunities. Highlights include the journey through Lakefield National Park, with its many lagoon areas that host an amazing variety of birdlife.  Late afternoon you will arrive at the main Cape Road at Musgrave Roadhouse, one of the legendary Cape Roadhouses you will visit on your adventure. This will be your campsite tonight. At sunset, the manager feeds the freshwater crocs in the campsite dam.   (BLD)

Approx: 220 Km As is our policy, to enjoy the Aussie bush to the fullest, today you will travel the less used roads and tracks, away from the main tourist route. The small historic township of Coen (pop:364) is a welcome stop for resupply of snacks and water. If time allows a visit to the museum and one quick cold beverage at the quirky S-Exchange Hotel may be possible.  On every day, your guide ‘carries the billy’ and will be on the lookout for a suitable rest stop to stretch the legs and for a morning or afternoon tea break. Camp tonight is at Archer River Roadhouse, another of the legendary Cape Roadhouses. (BLD)

Approx:196Km A morning drive on the Cape’s famous red soil roads to the Capes largest town of Weipa. The red dust that covers your vehicle has been given the title of a ‘Cape Tattoo’. Once obtained it must be proudly worn, as it is nearly impossible to remove without a good car wash. With a population of 4,000, mostly miners, this lively mining town is famous for its large aluminium mine, great fishing and beautiful sunsets. After establishing camp at the waterfront camping ground, catch up on washing, enjoy the pool, or head off to the shops. The sunset boat cruise is a very popular local tour, and we will need to prebook this for you before the trip departure, as an optional extra tour. A nice way to enjoy the sunset while on the water with a glass of bubbly, or two.  After breakfast the next morning, another optional tour of the town and mine site is highly recommended, which will also need to be prebooked.  (BLD)

Approx: 184Km Relax this morning at your campsite or head off on the optional mine tour. After lunch, you will be travelling a backroad from Weipa that links up with the main Cape Road known as the PDR, the Peninsular Development Road.  Sections of the PDR have become infamous in Cape folklore as the corrugations can in places be ‘memorable’. The ‘Cape massage’ as it is known is all part of the cape experience, but it’s good to know that with the right tyre pressure, your Croc’s modified suspension and larger wheels and strengthened tyres, your Croc can handle it and the journey becomes a far more comfortable experience. Your bush camp tonight is also one of our favourites and even though the campsite is very secluded, it offers a bush toilet and a unique ‘donkey’ hot water system for the showers.  (BLD)

Approx: 154Km An early breakfast and a short drive to arrive at an inconspicuous turnoff that marks the start of one of the Capes most potentially challenging 4WD tracks. The 53Km Frenchmans Track, meanders through forest and thick bush and is a fun and enjoyable driving experience. It is infamously renowned for its 2 river crossings, the Wenlock and the Pascoe. Both these crossings feature steep entry and exit ramps and water levels can rise and fall.  This is one of our Guides favourite days on the trip. The driving requires maximum attention. By this stage of your holiday, you will be a very relaxed and confident driver. Your guide will be directing and assisting where required. Safety is always our major priority and if the river crossings are determined by your Guide as being unpassable, an alternative itinerary will be designed for this day. You camp tonight at Bramwell Station, a working cattle property and popular campsite for everyone heading to the tip and about to take on The Overland Telegraph Track (OTT).  Your Bramwell Station hosts will provide dinner and, on most nights, entertainment. (BLD)

Approx: 92Km Get set for more adventure as you tackle the Overland telegraph Track, (OTT). (BLD)

Approx: 128Km. If time permits, stop for resupply in the town of Bamaga (pop:1,200), the administration centre for the Northern Peninsular Area before a short drive to camp beachside at Punsand Bay, Australia’s most northerly campsite.  A famous Punsand Bay pizza is on the menu for dinner tonight enjoyed in the beachfront dinning and bar area.  (BLD)

APPROX 100 Km.

BUT… If you have a group just wanting the support of our guides and mechanics, we can definitely arrange something – just give us a call or drop us an email .

The last word

4wd responsibly.

  • DON’T RUBBISH THE CAPE. Everything in – everything out, use rubbish points, leave campsites better than on arrival
  • Do not create new tracks especially in and around existing obstacles and campsites.
  • Support local Cape business and communities whenever possible.
  • Preserve, preserve, preserve for the generations to come.

You need to be over the age of 21, have held a license for a minimum of 2 years, be a competent and confident driver and we will help with the rest. There is a 4×4 guide on each trip to guide you through the tough spots and assist you to improve your 4wd skills.

Yes! You will get to experience first hand the Old Telegraph Track, Australia’s most iconic 4×4 Track! Followed by the Frenchman’s Track as well as the Bloomfield and 5 Beaches Tracks.

There are two support vehicles. The Guides vehicle , known as “Croczilla” is just what its name suggests, a ‘beefed up beast’ of a 4WD vehicle, driven by your tour Guide. It is a 4WD garage on wheels, carrying spare parts, tyres, tools, extensive recovery gear, oils and lubricants, fridge and freezer and fitted with a winch, it’s very handy to have around if a difficult recovery is required. On the roads, you are guided and connected to your 4wd Guide by UHF radio and in challenging obstacles your guide will be out on the track directing you by sight in person. The Camp Truck known as “Old Salty” is a large truck fitted out with food fridge and freezer, stoves, bbq, generator, work benches and even has a kitchen sink. Additionally, it has storage room for all the camp equipment. Staffed by the cook and camp assistant, most days this vehicle will travel independently to the Croc Fleet and arrive in camp early to set up before you arrive.

Our programs are mostly fully inclusive, except for some personal items and optional tours available from 3 rd party operators such as Fishing or Torres Strait Island tours. We aim to take away all the worry of planning and give you more time to kick back and enjoy your holiday. Please refer to our Inclusions and Exclusions lists detailed with each Tours pricing.

Not much! Just mainly, accommodation before the 9 Day trip starting in Cairns and after any tour that finishes in Cairns. If you are on one of our, Fly/Drive 9 day trips, we haven’t included the flight to or from The Tip and Cairns, as you may choose to extend your trip which will mean you have the option of flying in or out of Horn Island. Talk to us about the options available.  Other items not included are spending money, personal snacks and drinks and personal bottled drinking water.

Our vehicles are covered for Third Party Property, Fire and Theft Insurance. Please refer to pages 44-55 of the following: https://www.nrma.com.au/sites/nrma/files/nrma/policy_booklets/car_pds_0721_nsw_act_tas_qld.pdf

We strongly recommend taking out Comprehensive Insurance to cover the following suggested but not limited to: personal belongings, cancellation, emergency evacuation, personal liability, death and disability. Please refer to our Booking Terms and conditions for more information.

Please contact us for further information.

In the event of mechanical breakdown not caused by negligent driving, Australian 4WD Adventurers will provide alternative transport for you to continue. This may involve the loss of a day, to transport a replacement vehicle to the designated site.  Our 4WD Guides are also mechanical wizards and carry most parts required to maintain the fleet throughout the adventure.

Our Guides vehicle carries a Satellite phone in the event of an emergency. Our Guides are First Aid Trained. Comprehensive Insurance inclusive of Medical Cover and Emergency Evacuation cover is strongly recommended.

As we provide tents, stretcher and mattress for everyone, storage/carriage room can be a considerable problem. Call to discuss if necessary. For hygiene reasons you must provide your own sleeping bag (open out doona style recommended) and pillow.  If you have time before departure, these items can be readily and cheaply purchased in Cairns.

Your deposit is non-refundable, but if you need to cancel prior to final payment, you can transfer your deposit to another Australian 4WD Adventure. Final payment is due 60 days prior to departure, any cancelation after this time incurs a 100% cancelation fee. Nil refund will also apply once tour has commenced. Please refer to our Booking Terms and Conditions for more information.

Our fully inclusive trips are all designed around our unique 4WD’s. We know we can look after these vehicles in remote areas with our support crew and gear.

Our Cape Crocs have spacious interiors and are very comfortable with 3 adults, anymore and you may find yourselves a little too close.  Two adults with 2 children is still comfortable. We want you to have an awesome trip with space to spread out a little.

If we camp in the National Parks, there are toilets and sometimes a shower. At commercial campgrounds, including Roadhouses, you will find excellent facilities including daily serviced toilets and showers. Our bush camp at Chuulangun has toilet and shower facilities. If an emergency bush camp is required, we cannot provide shower or toilet facilities.

The commercial campgrounds we utilise have coin operated washing machines.  Clothes can be washed overnight. Additionally, you will have time to do your washing at the Tip on your free days. On average, a single wash load costs $4, Dryer load $4. ($1 coins are required).

Your personal drinks, water, soft drinks, and alcohol is not provided. Each Cape Croc has a 65-litre fridge ample to keep a daily supply of drinking water cold. You will have the opportunity to buy bulk water and other drinks on Day 1 of each trip. There will be the opportunity to refill drinking water at most commercial campgrounds, alternatively you can buy bottled water from Roadhouses and shops along the way. All water for meal preparation tea coffee etc is provided.

We provide your main meals: Breakfast is a combination of continental and cooked. Lunch is a range of wraps and sandwiches. Dinner is a mix of camp oven dishes and BBQ’s. We pride ourselves on the quantity and quality of our meal menu, which has been designed and prepared by restaurant chefs.

Absolutely – just let us know, well in advance, your special requirements and we will do our best to accommodate.

A trip will only be confirmed and operate when a   minimum number of 8 people in 4 vehicles have booked.  There will only be a maximum of 6 ‘client’  vehicles on any trip. All trips are accompanied by the two support vehicles and crew.

A lot of land in Cape York is Aboriginal Land where special rules and restrictions apply, not only in the communities, but throughout the whole shire.

You can check the following website for the latest updates: https://www.qld.gov.au/atsi/health-staying-active/alcohol-smoking-drugs/community-alcohol-restrictions

We also like to support all businesses in the Cape Region and buy as much as possible locally.

If you are on our longer 16-day program there is some free time when you get to the Tip. Whilst we are travelling throughout the Cape we ask everyone to stay as a group for safety reasons.

Absolutely! If fishing is your thing, then it’s a MUST to throw in a line on a trip to the Cape. There is a chance to do half day, full day, or overnight fishing tours from Bamaga. Not promising, but there could be a couple of chances along the way to ‘wet a line’. Our Guides are all keen fishermen. Seisia Jetty and all the beach areas north of the Jardine are noted fishing hot spots.

There are several Optional Tours we can arrange for you. The most popular are the day trip to Thursday island, or, the one day, Three Islands tour. Depending on availability, it might be possible to arrange a Fishing trip. Other longer tours are available if you have the time.

Should COVID-19 government border restrictions impact travel, you will receive a 100% credit for your tour booking.

Outside of these conditions, our normal  booking terms and conditions  apply.

Itinerary & Accommodation Snapshot

Please check your required arrival time with the office before booking your flights.

Today you will be greeted by our friendly and professional Tour Directors before we begin our journey north with a scenic drive along the Captain Cook Highway to Port Douglas. Enjoy a brief tour of this famous tropical village before checking into the premier accommodation choice in Port Douglas - the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort for our overnight stay.

This evening enjoy a sumptuous welcome dinner together at the resort.  Meals: D

This morning we continue our journey north and visit the award-winning Mossman Gorge Centre in the Daintree National Park. Here we enjoy the Dreamtime Gorge Walk, which begins with a traditional smoking ceremony to cleanse and ward off bad spirits. Setting off on the walk, we'll be accompanied by experienced Indigenous guides who'll demonstrate traditional plant use, identify bush food sources and provide an enchanting narrative of the rainforest. At the end of the walk enjoy traditional bush tea and damper.

We then venture further into the World Heritage Listed Daintree, the oldest and most biologically diverse rainforest in the world. First up, we enjoy an informative cruise on the Daintree River before an exclusive guided tour at Cooper Creek Wilderness. Situated directly below Thornton Peak, the epicentre of refugial significance in the Daintree, Cooper Creek is home to pristine old growth rainforest and extraordinary fan palm galleries. Here we'll take a guided tour along the forest floor with expert, inhabitant guides; an exclusive experience that's far removed from other mass tourism offerings in the area.

Late this afternoon we arrive at the Heritage Lodge and Spa for our overnight stay. Meals: B.L.D

This morning we continue our journey through the Daintree to Cape Tribulation, a headland named by Lieutenant James Cook after his ship struck the Great Barrier Reef in 1770. After a stroll along the beach and a cup of tea, we'll continue north and tackle the infamous Bloomfield Track. Impassable during the wet season, the track passes through some wild country and should only be tackled by 4WD vehicles. There are numerous steep climbs through the rainforest and several creek crossings to negotiate, so sit back and enjoy the scenery as your experienced tour driver does the hard work!

Once across the Bloomfield River we'll visit Bloomfield Falls before lunch at the Lion’s Den Hotel, one of QLD’s oldest bush pubs. We then depart for Cooktown, where Lieutenant Cook beached the Endeavour for repairs after hitting the reef. Upon our arrival we'll enjoy a town tour including the James Cook Museum, Cooktown Botanic Gardens and the Grassy Hill lookout.

We then check in to the 4-star Sovereign Resort Hotel for our overnight stay.  Meals: B.L.D

Today we depart Cooktown along the Battle Camp Road and visit the Old Laura Homestead before arriving into Laura. This area is famous for its rock art.

This morning we visit art sites in the Laura area, where an experienced Aboriginal guide will accompany us to interpret the art and explain the significance of this cultural site.

Later on we enjoy lunch and a visit to the Quinkan Cultural Centre. We then travel through the grassy plains and woodlands of Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park, tackling several creek crossings along the way. We'll stop at Kalpowar on the Normanby River for afternoon tea, followed by a visit to Red Lily Lagoon, home to a vast array of flora and fauna. Admire the tall lotus lily with its spectacular pink flowers and dense yellow stamens, and keep an eye out for Brolgas and Sarus cranes striding through the lilies searching for sedge tubers.

This afternoon we pass through Nifold Plain, an open savannah characterised by thousands of magnetic termite mounds. We then continue through to Lotus Bird Lodge, beautifully located on the edge of a tranquil billabong. Enjoy an exclusive two night stay to discover the area. Meals: B.L.D

Today enjoy a breathtaking helicopter flight over Rinyirru (Lakefield). Board our exclusively chartered Bell Jet Ranger and fly over swamps, plains and forests before following the Kennedy River to Princess Charlotte Bay. You’ll spot crocodiles, pigs, cattle and all sorts of other wildlife on this mesmerising flight. It really is the only way to get a true appreciation of the area and adds a great perspective of Cape York Peninsula.

After lunch there's time for a walk around the lodge's billabong or some bird watching. Alternatively, enjoy some free time to yourself and soak up the atmosphere of Cape York from this tranquil location. Meals: B.L.D

Please note: Weight limits apply to all scenic flights

Today we farewell Lotus Bird Lodge and make our way north along the Peninsula Development Road. Pass through Coen before arriving at Archer River Roadhouse for lunch. We then continue on to Weipa, arriving mid-afternoon to check in to the Albatross Bay Resort. Meals: B.L.D

This morning we join Western Cape Eco Tours for a cruise on the Embley River. Explore diverse wildlife habitat, learn about local culture and keep an eye out for some big salt water crocodiles! Our skipper will also provide a detailed insight into Weipa's bauxite mining industry. Afterwards, we’ll visit the Western Cape Cultural Centre which showcases the history of Weipa and its surrounding communities. The centre enjoys an enviable location overlooking the bay, so it’s also a great place for a picnic lunch.

This afternoon we depart Weipa and make our way towards Moreton Telegraph Station. We pass by Batavia Downs before heading north along the Telegraph Track, arriving at Moreton mid-afternoon. Situated on the banks of the Wenlock River, Moreton served as a repeater station for the Overland Telegraph Line established in the 1880's. The last Morse telegram code was sent from Brisbane to Thursday Island on the 24th June 1964, yet the line remained in use until 1987 as the local telephone line.

Upon our arrival at Moreton we’ll check in to our exclusive wilderness lodge for two nights to relax and explore the local area. Our newly refurbished rooms feature ensuite bathrooms, quality furnishings and air-conditioning. Meals: B.L.D

In the 1860s construction began on the Overland Telegraph Line. The northern section ran through very difficult rugged country and the telegraph survey expedition was only the fourth overland expedition ever made to Cape York. Work on the Cape York Peninsula section was completed in 1886, and Moreton Telegraph Station was completed in 1887.

The line served Australia well until the outbreak of war when better communications were required in the face of the threat to the northern coastline. After more than 100 years of service, Moreton eventually ceased communication operations in 1987 with the introduction of the modern era of telecommunications.

Today, join our guides for some interpretive walks around the station and along the Wenlock River, which contains the highest diversity of freshwater fish of all Australian rivers. Species include the Freshwater Sawfish, Spear tooth Shark and more common fish like the Sooty Grunter and Barramundi.

After lunch, there is time to catch up on some washing or simply relax and take in the beautiful surrounds followed by our second night at this historic site. Meals: B.L.D

Today our journey continues north along the Telegraph Track, passing through some wild and rugged countryside. However, as some sections of the track are impassable we'll mainly be travelling on the northern and southern bypass roads on our journey north from Moreton.

This morning enjoy a visit to Fruit Bat Falls for a refreshing swim in the crystal clear water of Eliot Creek, followed by a picnic lunch.

We then continue north and cross the Jardine River by vehicular ferry, before arriving at Bamaga where we check in to the Cape York Peninsula Lodge for the next two nights.  Meals: B.L.D

Today we venture to the northernmost point on the Australian Mainland, a Cape traveller’s ultimate destination. The walking track commences at Pajinka and requires a good level of fitness, but is well worth the effort! Get your picture taken next to the iconic signpost and soak up the views of the Torres Strait as your guide fills you in on the history of the area.

This afternoon we visit Somerset, once the home of Frank Jardine and the official government residence on the Cape, protected by British Marines. After a BBQ lunch we return to the hotel where the rest of the day can be spent at your leisure. Tonight enjoy a performance by a local dance group at the resort. Meals: B.L.D

Please note: local dance group is subject to availability.

This morning we head to Seisia and board the ferry for our cruise across Endeavour Strait. Enjoy informative commentary about the Torres Strait Islands from the captain as we make our way to Thursday Island, situated 35km northwest of the tip of Cape York. The Island has a population of approximately 3,000 people and is the main administrative centre of the Torres Strait.

Upon our arrival on Thursday Island we'll enjoy a tour with a local expert before some free time.

We then take the short ferry trip across to Friday Island, home to Kazu Pearls. Here we enjoy a pearl demonstration and a visit to the pearl farm shop where we will have the opportunity to purchase some of their exquisite pearl jewellery.

Later this afternoon we return to Thursday Island for our overnight stay at the Jardine Motel. Meals: B.L.D

Note:  For your convenience when taking the ferries to the islands, we suggest that you reduce your luggage to a small backpack. You will require a change of clothes, comfortable shoes, bathers, toiletries (no sharps), personal ID and Qantas Frequent Flyer card (if you have one). The rest of your luggage will return to Cairns on the coach.

This morning we catch a ferry across to Horn Island and enjoy a tour of this once prominent WWII air base before visiting the Torres Strait Heritage Museum. We then board our QANTAS flight back to Cairns, arriving in time for lunch.

For our final evening together, we'll check into the Shangri-La The Marina. Enjoy luxurious rooms in this perfectly positioned hotel along the Esplanade. Tonight, enjoy a special farewell dinner at the hotel and reflect upon our incredible adventure to the tip of Australia. Meals: B.L.D

After breakfast enjoy a relaxing morning before your transfer to Cairns airport, or to your accommodation if staying on. Meals: B

Tour Details

We couldn’t be more excited for this wildlife tour! For years we have wanted to run a tour specifically to find & photograph wildlife and nature! Finally it’s here: the tour designed for wildlife enthusiasts!

This is a very special Cape York tour, visiting some of the best natural regions in Cape York. We will spend our time looking for wildlife, whether that be birds, reptiles, mammals, insects or other! You will get to observe animal behaviour up close, while disconnecting and listening to the sounds of the bush. There will have countless opportunities to photograph our wonderful fauna and flora. And the best part, you will be with an awesome group of like minded people!

Starting from (& returning to) Cairns, you will first head north through “the most extraordinary place on Earth” according to Sir David Attenborough! We then spend 2 nights in ‘Queensland’s Kakadu’, aka Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park. Rinyirru is a massive wetland ecosystem, host to exceptional birdlife!

We will be treated to an authentic Welcome to Country in Coen, with cultural activities. And then, after a few days camping you can relax in a room for 2 nights at the Greenhoose, nestled right beside Kutini-Payamu NP. Here you will have 2 full days (and nights) to find some of the most exceptional wildlife Australia has to offer! After a couple nights in luxury, we head down to the beautiful Chilli Beach for a night’s camp. We then head south to Musgrave, to spot some very rare, endemic parrots! Our last day will see us having an easy drive, mostly on bitumen again, back to Cairns.

This tour requires a good level of fitness as there will be many walks looking for wildlife as well as night spotlighting and drives. The tour is mostly camping, with a couple nights in cabins.

Departure & Return Locations

Price includes.

  • Tented accommodation
  • Breakfast, lunch & dinner, including 3 dinners out!
  • Sleeping equipment (tall tent, high density foam mattress, sheets/blanket, pillow)
  • 2 nights in cabins! See below*
  • All entrance fees to National Parks, ferries & camps
  • Incredible wildlife opportunities!

As inflation and the cost of goods and services increases, we have had to adjust our prices. We have always tried to keep our prices low for you, however, prices have risen across the board and we must keep up. Fuel prices have risen significantly, increasing the prices of food and other resources in remote areas due to freight costs. Many of our accommodation and tour providers have doubled, and sometimes tripled in price. In 2023, all dinners out have also been included in your tour price.

We also pride ourselves in maintaining our vehicles impeccably and paying our guides well.  Our staff are up there with the highest paid tour guides & cooks in Australia. And despite what you may have heard, road conditions in Cape York and the Top End are as bad as they always have been, and there is still a LOT of bad dirt.

We have recently conducted research on all other companies going to Cape York (& a few Gulf Savannah), including motorbikes, tagalongs and tour trucks.  We found that we are still the best value in Cape York, whilst maintaining our 5-star rating.

We are just outlining this as we believe in being transparent and we hope you can appreciate the immense value of these remote, outback tours. We hope you will continue to support us, our staff and our dream.

Please read before booking!

The Greenhoose has limited rooms available for our number of guests.  The basic room price is included in your tour.  If you choose another room, the price showing for that room will already have the base price taken off it.  The availability of rooms will be on a first come first serve basis. As there is no way of restricting the number in the system, I may have to get back to you on what rooms are available after you book.

In summary there are currently:

  • 2 x family shared facility rooms with one queen bed and one king single bed
  • 1 x family ensuite with one queen bed and one king single bed
  • 4 x single shared facility rooms
  • 12 6 x double ensuite rooms
  • Daintree River Croc & Wildlife Cruise with Solar Whisper!
  • 2 nights at Rinyirru (Lakefield) NP for Wildlife Spotting
  • Culture in Coen: Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony, dancing or cultural activities
  • Famous Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) NP
  • Chilli Beach & Portland Roads
  • Endemic birds, reptiles, mammals & more only found in Cape York
  • Camp fires & excellent meals!

What to expect

Cockatours is a family-owned business who aim to create unforgettable experiences for everyone. We would love to share our experience and knowledge of the remote top end of Australia with you and show you places, experiences and wildlife you never thought existed!  We run smaller tours with a maximum of 15 (Isuzu) or 19 (MAN) people so it still feels private and we expect everyone to be friendly, considerate and work together as a team to create a positive experience for all.

As a small business, we have the ability to be flexible and use this as an advantage for creating great experiences and adventures. Tours are subject to change due to weather, road conditions, unexpected circumstances and the guide’s decision to best suit the group.

If you decide to join us on an adventure, please note the following:

  • be prepared for true bush camps; some have no facilities – we have a bush toilet and shower for these occasions
  • some camp toilets can be a 100-200m walk from your tent
  • tented accommodation: light, easy to setup, 6ft tall
  • team work; everyone helps clean, cook, pack & set up
  • we offer amazing camping meals to suit large groups - our meals are raved about!
  • we have limited access to shops, services or phone reception (Cape York is mostly Telstra only)
  • our itinerary is a guideline. We may alter the tour throughout the season if we feel there is a better option or an activity is not worth your time
  • we have a great reputation to uphold and endeavour to provide an amazing tour every time!

Tour Specific Notes

  • Bring water bottles (or small backpacks with bladders) with a capacity up to 3L for some of the hikes. Staying hydrated in the tropics is critical to feeling good, avoiding headaches and enjoying your tour!
  • You must have hiking shoes (preferably with ankle support) for this tour. If you are an experienced hiker/bushwalker, go with what you normally wear and are comfortable with.
  • Please bring a head lamp with you. They will save you an enormous amount of angst at night time around camp. You will also need them for cave walks. We have a couple of models we recommend and stock in our ‘truck shop’ for $30-40. Clients in the past have replaced their BCF specials with these and been stoked with them. We make no profit on these, we just want our clients to fully enjoy their camping experience!
  • There are lots of walks on these tours. You never have to do a walk, however, to make the most of this trip, completing all (non-optional) walks is highly recommended. We would highly recommend a decent level of fitness or starting morning/afternoon walks at home before this tour commences. You should be able to walk at least 3km over uneven ground, with elevation change to make the most of this tour.

Your Guides

  • Rossy, the Cockatours owner, will be running this wildlife tour alongside Joe! This is a special wildlife tour and absolutely requires 2 ecologists & guides! Rossy worked as an ecologist in Cape York for 6 years, helping Indigenous rangers from Coen and Aurukun manage their feral pig populations to improve the health of their country and wetlands and reduce sea turtle nest predation by feral pigs. For the past 5 years he has run tours in Cape York & the NT. He is a passionate photographer and offers lessons to help people learn how to use their camera and understand photography. He is passionate about reptiles and was once a snake catcher in Townsville, but these days prefers to take photos and reduce risk!
  • Returning in 2023 is Joe, a very enthusiastic and upbeat guide! Joe is absolutely fantastic, and the reviews mentioning him are a testament to his ability! "G’day, my name is Joe and I’m one of the guides for Cockatours in 2022. I grew up in the bush surrounded by nature and wildlife, fuelling my desire to learn more and to teach people about our natural world from a young age. After finishing high school, I went on to study zoology, ecology and marine biology, which has led me to a variety of ecocentric occupations. In the past I’ve travelled to several different parts of the world in search of rare and wonderful animals and experiences. You can usually find me outdoors looking for wildlife, playing the drums or hanging out in my reptile room at home. I hope to spin a few yarns, have a few laughs and build your appreciation for some of the weird and wacky creatures that call Cape York home."

Rossy the Guide Next to cycad

Our 15-seater tour truck, Zeus , takes us on incredible adventures! He is equipped with comfortable seating perfect for off-road driving, a good sound system and USB charging ports. The air-conditioning works extremely well and the tinted windows in the cab help keep the glare & heat out! Our trailer is our portable kitchen with even more storage which is perfect for any event; short/long term camping trips, weekend getaways, the list goes on!  There’s even a large awning for those rare rainy days!

On camping tours, we take a maximum of 15 people and there is a fridge for clients in the trailer for your own  drinks!

Camping Equipment

We are very particular about a few things that make a trip comfortable; good food and sleeping gear are two of those. We do our best to maintain our gear to a high standard and turn over our camping gear frequently.

Our single or duo tents are 6.5 ft high, very spacious and easy to put up. The fly can also be removed, making it a big mozzie dome, for those starry nights so you can watch the stars go over head!

The mattresses are high-quality, high-density dunlop foam mattresses that stack (not rollable) and are comfy! We have sheets and micro-fibre blankets (NO yucky sleeping bags) for bedding and a mattress case as well. The pillows are real pillows and are covered with hygienic pillow covers as well as a standard pillow case. We even supply bath mats for the front of your tent!  The chairs and mattresses vary between trucks due to storage space.
