My Honest (and Surprisingly Positive) Air Transat Review

My Honest (and Surprisingly Positive) Air Transat Review

  • Pinterest 183

Thinking of flying with Air Transat? Read on for my Air Transat Review.

Canada has two major international budget carriers — WestJet and Air Transat.

I’ve flown with them both, but I recently had a long delay coming back from Europe that prompted me to write more about Air Transat specifically.

I won’t sugarcoat it. I was delayed for 24 hours coming back from Europe and it was rough, y’all.

It might surprise you to hear that despite all the problems, I would fly with Air Transat again.

Now that I’ve had a chance to sleep in my own bed and more importantly, received a check compensating me for the delay I experienced less than 2 weeks after my return, I have to say Air Transat isn’t so bad.

They were named the “World’s Best Leisure Airline in 2018” and while the situation I encountered could’ve benefitted from clearer communication, at no point did I feel ignored.

Some airlines will put you on hold forever, passing you from department to department before you mysteriously get “disconnected.” It’s infuriating.

My concern when it comes to travel purchases is not how fancy a brand is or how many stars a hotel has, but how good on an experience past customers have had.

I’ll happily stay at a Days Inn, for instance, if the rooms are clean, breakfast is hearty and neighborhood is safe.

RELATED POST: HOW TO GET YOUR MONEY BACK FOR CANCELLED FLIGHTS

Similarly, I’ll fly budget airlines no problem. so long as there’s a dedicated customer service team and the experience on board is tolerable, i.e. complimentary   beverages and entertainment.

This is my Air Transat review and everything you need to know before flying with this popular budget airline.

Air Transat Destinations

Glasses set on a map

Currently, Air Transat operates routes primarily throughout Europe, Canada, the US, Central America, the Caribbean and South America.

They have 27 European destinations, 37 sunny destinations and 5 Canadian destinations.

Their hub is located at the Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.

Baggage and Check-in

Suitcase and passport

Check in on Air Transat is a fairly easy process.

Depending on your route, a mobile ticket may or may not be available.

Be aware that if you go through the gate agents, they will make you weigh your bag.

They also have scales as you’re boarding, but you’re less likely to be stopped here for size checks if your bag is discreet.

You are allowed one carry-on bag and a personal item, but with a weight limit of 10kg for your carry-on which is barely 20 pounds.

If you have a rolling bag, at least 5 pounds of that will be the suitcase alone.

If you book an Eco Budget Fare, checked bags aren’t included and prices go up within 24 hours of the flight.  It costs $35 to check your first bag, $50 for your second.

If you have an Eco Standard or Eco Flex fare, your first checked bag is included.

Seat selection

View out of the plane from the window

Seat selection used to be free with Air Transat but unfortunately that changed in July 2019. Hey, capitalism is a thing guys ::shrug::

Now, prices range from $30 for a standard seat to $50+ for an even more legroom seat.

Remember when sitting in an emergency row was free? Ah, the good ol’ days.

You can reserve a seat up to 24 hours before your flight.

As far as seats go, the ones on Air Transat are standard. They recently renovated their economy class to include features like mood lighting, a 4-way headrest and more legroom.

The average airline offers 30-31 inches of legroom — Air Transat has 32 inches.

The seats are comfortable enough, your basic airline seats. They have charging ports for your electronic devices and a seat-back pocket to place your water or books.

Pro tip: if you need more legroom but don’t want to pay for it try to sit in the first row behind a galley so no one will recline into you.

Never ever sit in the last row if you can avoid it, since others recline into you and you have nowhere to go, not to mention you get a nice waft of the airplane toilet whenever someone uses the restroom.

Food on Air Transat

Tray filled with airline food

Here’s another benefit rarely found on budget airlines — meals are free, too!

At least on flights to Europe from Canada and vice versa. There’s a snack and beverage served on flights to the Caribbean, Central and South America.

I flew with Air Transat both to and from Europe and both times we were given dinner, a snack and a second meal, either lunch or breakfast depending on the time.

I found the food surprisingly tasty and was grateful to not have to pay $10 on board for a ham and cheese sandwich, like you do with some competitors.

Entertainment on  Air Transat

Guy sitting on an Air Transat plane

One of my biggest gripes with low-cost airlines is the complete lack of entertainment on their planes.

You feel every minute of an 8-hour flight when you don’t have any distractions to keep your mind occupied.

Air Transat has screens on the back of every seat filled with hours of entertainment options, from games to movies and TV shows.

There were popular series and new releases available, as well as a good mix of genres.

I found myself sufficiently entertained without having to resort to Netflix downloads on my phone.

This perk is also completely free and applies to all flights.

My personal experience  and Air Transat review

My Air Transat review after a 24 hour delay

I would recommend flying with Air Transat.

As far as budget airlines go, they’re not so bad. They offer several free perks that competitors don’t, and their customer service is very responsive.

They have multiple ways to contact customer service , from live chat to a phone line.

During my delay, I reached out to them on Twitter and they answered within 2 minutes.

When I filed my claim for compensation, they got back to me within a week. I expected to have to hassle them for what I was entitled to under E.U. law, but they didn’t give me grief or take steps to delay or avoid paying.

RELATED POST: HOW I GOT $689 IN FLIGHT DELAY COMPENSATION

They admitted their mistake, cut the check and moved on. That’s the kind of company I want to deal with.

At the time of the delay, there could’ve been more accurate information related to the passengers. It seemed like we kept getting excuses as to what was keeping us from taking off, none of which were consistent.

At one point they blamed a lack of cutlery on board.

Meanwhile, I was getting grief from friends saying that’s why I should never fly budget, and that traditional carriers would have available replacement planes to send versus having to wait a day for one specific plane to be fixed.   And maybe that’s true.

But I’ve experienced delays with Delta, American and United and not once has anyone ever offered me meal vouchers or a hotel room.

At best they’ve brought out the economy snacks and offered a mini bottle of water and a bag of Cheese-its.

Air Transat provided me with lunch, dinner, breakfast and lunch again during the delay.

Nothing fancy, just 10 or 20 Euro to spend at the airport. Unfortunately, it was the only one I’ve ever been to with no full bar, just beer and wine. Made the wait for the flight much longer…

They also made arrangements for me to stay overnight at a Holiday Inn, where I had A/C and the opportunity to shower. Airport transportation was provided free of charge.

In a bad situation, Air Transat did what it could and at least made an effort to make me comfortable.

That’s more than I can say for many other airlines.  I will also reiterate that I had no problems flying with them to London Gatwick, as I was arriving to Europe.

Coupled with the free food and responsive customer service, it’s safe to say I’ll keep Air Transat on my list of go-to budget airlines.

Tuesday 20th of June 2023

My initial experience with Air Transat was positive, but upon arriving in Montreal, I had to walk several miles to catch my connecting flight and stand in long lines. Because of I have a learning disability and anxiety (and Air Transat does not offer assistance), I had to rely on asking Air Transat agents at the terminal for help. I eventually sat where I was advised to sit, which was to the left of the gate, where I could not hear announcements... and missed my window to board. While the agents on site were very understanding, the Air Transat hotline that I was told to call offered no assistance. I was not given the option to rebook the flight. Instead, I found myself stranded at the airport for 48 hours (!) and had to pay for a brand-new ticket. I repeatedly called the customer service hotline, but agents there were very rude and offered no assistance. After 200+ flights, this is the first really bad experience I've had.

Canada has one national flag carrier and that is Air Canada, which is also one of the founding members of Star Alliance. They fly to 51 domestic and 136 international destinations. West Jet is the second largest carriern flies to 24 countries and Air Transat flies to 60 destinations globally. While Air Transat does have some interesting prices in economy class, they are not a low cost airline. I have been flying since the early 70s to 98 countries and have flown on the 3 main carriers and have had good and not so good experiences. Nowadays, pretty much every airline can be a hit and miss affair for passengers. Safe travels to you.

Wednesday 15th of March 2023

Good review. Have travelled with them several times. They are a Jekyll and Hyde airline. When they are good can be a breeze boarding, the flight crew and dare I say the food too. But when they are bad......the worst. Three and a half hour delay from Europe with no compensation and denial of delay. Asked to check your carry size at the boarding gate and not during check in. Oh by the way expect you to pay for oversized carry on even if you are travelling club. Bunch of rip of merchants.

Monday 17th of January 2022

Im glad you had a nice experience...but...Let me preface by saying...I am NOT a complainer, nor am I someone who leaves negative reviews. I am generally VERY positive and give the benefit of the doubt for businesses. But this experience was just horrible, and I strongly caution anyone that's planning to book with AirTransat to do your research first. We booked a flight about a month ago. We were told we needed to call the airline to add our infant to the flight...and so we tried. For 3 weeks, we called just about every day. We waiting on hold for 8 hours or more, often to just have the call dropped after being on hold for so long. Believe it or not...today we got a call back..2 hours after our flight LEFT!!! Could you imagine? Shame on your Airtransat.

Air Transat. Flown with them several times from 2016. Going back to UK with them October 2020. Brilliant airline. Staff fantastic . Food excellent. Nothing to much trouble for them. Recommend them all the time.

They do not care… - Air Transat

“They do not care…” Review of Air Transat

We were in Club class. The entertainment apparatus did not work at all so I sat there for 7 hours with nothing to do . The only meal available was paella which we do not eat. The wine , and I am not fussy, was insipid and we did not drink any . Our flight costs were over $1,600 each . I complained and asked for a full or significant refund and was offered $150. I just cancelled our April , 2024 trip .

Another great round trip with the best airline, Air Transat. Flight TS568 from Toronto to Santa Clara on Nov. 26 was smooth, with a great crew of pilots and flight attendants. We pre-booked club class as it is always a perfect way to start a vacation. We decided we wanted to get it for the return flight as well, and after some communication issues, were told we would have to set it up at the airport. At the Santa Clara check in desk, they told us we would have to set it up once we board. Luckily flight TS568 Dec. 3 also had an outstanding crew, and Flight Captain Julie along with Lia efficiently accommodated our request. Thank you Julie! Air Transat has been an amazing airline, and we will always choose them!

air transat travel care

Hello JL859, Thank you for the positive feedback! We're truly happy you enjoyed our Club Class and we're glad the staff was able to accommodate you. We hope to see you back onboard soon, Marty

They are the worse in Portugal! I travel with the same carry ones from Toronto all the time to Portugal but they give everyone a hard time coming back, these is my fourth trip these Year and its always the same they are always trying to charge for your carry on and they are very rude about. ( I also had check in bag) I have complained to Airtransat about the way they handle the customer at the counter there and I received an automated email. They don’t care as longe you pay for your carry one. Other companies are better don’t spend money to get frustrated and embarrassed at the counter.

Hello doresc2018, We are sorry about what happened. Kindly note that all carry-ons must respect the size requirements that are on our website. If they don't, the agents may ask you to pay an extra fee or ask to put them in the checked baggage hold. However, rest assured that hospitality and respect are important values to us, and we're sorry you had a bad experience with the employees at the airport. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we appreciate your understanding as we work to resolve this matter. Marty

We didn’t even get to board the plane. We lost $6000.00 of our money with no refund of any kind. To be told it was our fault. At the time you had to be vaccinated for 14 days before you were allowed to travel. At that time there was no where on there site that was stated. They added this clause after we had been denied. We were vaccinated for 10 days before our trip. They would not let us board. But they would make exceptions for other reasons except for us. So we lost everything. Transat didn’t offer us anything in return except for a very rude email. I would not recommend this company to anyone. Also trying to get a hold of there customer service is absolutely impossible you may as well not even try. Very disappointing. Our trip was January 2021 I just wanted to repost .

Hello Davebrandy, We're sorry you missed your flight. For our part, we have to respect government restrictions. We invite you to consult the website of the country you are visiting or the following link to find out about documents and restrictions for your destination: https://www.airtransat.com/en-CA/travel-information/traveller-care-practical-guide. Lilo

I booked an Air Transat vacation through Tripcentral and received notification that my return flight was changed from an evening to a morning flight. This means my vacation was shortened by 12 hours of a 7 day vacation, including a loss of 2 meals at the resort. My friends who booked the same package through Transat directly were able to adjust their vacation days because of the flight change. Tripcentral refused to do any change for me, and wants to charge me $400 on an $1879 vacation to change the dates, so now I have different flights and vacation days than my friends. Customer service has been very poor, and I'm disappointed in both companies. I would not recommend booking with either because they will not give you what you paid for and then try to charge you extra fees.

Hello P1078YSstevenw, We are very sorry for this situation. We understand that a flight change can be frustrating, especially if it cuts a day off your trip. As you have booked through a travel agent, you would need to contact them directly if you wish to change your flight. Lilo

Air Transat flights : Guide and tips to save money

air transat travel care

Air travel can be expensive when you don’t know how to shop around for the best fares. Fortunately, you can save money by booking Air Transat flights.

Air Transat , renowned for its flights to Europe, the United States, Canada and other sunny destinations, is a major player in the Quebec and Canadian air markets.

In this guide, we give you all the tips you need to find cheap Air Transat flights and save on your next plane tickets.

Air Transat or Air Canada: which is better?

For Canadians, Air Transat and Air Canada are the two main airlines available for the vast majority of flights. The big difference between the two companies is that Air Transat targets mainly leisure travel, while Air Canada tries to attract business customers as well.

As a result, Air Transat will serve more secondary airports in Europe and the South than Air Canada. In addition, Air Transat may offer flights on more dates or on a different day of the week, which may be more convenient for you.

For those looking for an enhanced flying experience , Air Canada’s Signature business class is the way to go. Furthermore, when we take a look at the scope of its destinations, we can see that Air Transat doesn’t go as far as Asia, Africa and Oceania, unlike Air Canada.

Direct flights with Air Transat

Here’s a map of Air Transat ’s direct flight coverage. You can find this information on the Flight Connections website.

Current Air Transat flights

Here is a table showing Air Transat ‘s current direct flights from their Canadian airports of operation. You can quickly see, in bold, the destinations that Air Transat serves exclusively with direct flights, as opposed to Air Canada.

For example, for a family trip to Portugal , the most practical itinerary for your vacation might be to land in Lisbon and depart from Porto. Air Transat is therefore the preferred choice between the two airlines, especially with young children , as these flights are direct.

Similarly, Air Canada is not offering international flights from Quebec City airport at the moment. So flights with Air Transat are the only direct options available.

As of autumn 2023, Air Transat and Porter Airlines are now partners, offering codeshare flights! This means that connecting opportunities are greatly increased for North American travellers. In all, the two airlines serve more than 80 destinations.

Codeshare flights allow simplified check-in and transfer of baggage from one airline to another when connecting. Read all about this new partnership in this article :

Air Transat's different flight tickets

Air Transat ’s official website offers a multitude of air ticket options for travellers looking to explore the world.

Economy Class fare options

Club class fare options, air transat's different fare classes: how to choose.

Every trip is unique, and Air Transat offers the freedom to choose the fare that’s best for each individual, with the flexibility to change or cancel flights, plus a host of other benefits. Although you can get excellent travel insurance by paying with the appropriate credit card , it’s best to select the right fare class when buying a plane ticket. In fact, if you change your mind, this is not a situation eligible for protection by insurers .

In addition, any mishaps that may occur during your trip, such as flight delays or lost luggage , can be reimbursed and compensated through your credit card insurance as well!

As far as luggage and seat selection are concerned, many credit cards offer annual travel credits to reimburse such expenses. So, to save on your Air Transat tickets, it may be a good idea to opt for the Eco Budget fare and pay for your seat selection with the travel credit on the National Bank World Elite Mastercard ® !

What’s more, this card gives you unlimited free access to the National Bank Lounge , so you can eat and drink before your Air Transat flight. So you don’t have to pay extra for the gourmet Club Class meal either!

Tips for cheap flights with Air Transat

The best way to find airline tickets at the best prices (all airlines included) is to use Google Flights . Indeed, with the Explore tool, you can easily spot dates that are more affordable at a glance.

For Europe, Air Transat flights will often appear at the top of the results list:

When should you buy your plane ticket with Air Transat?

Contrary to popular belief, it’s a myth to say that there are certain dates or days of the week when it’s best to buy a plane ticket because it’s always a question of supply and demand.

However, Google Flights can show you the best time to book, based on data from previous years, and display a calendar of the cheapest dates too. It’s certain that there will be less demand to leave or return on a weekday than on a Friday night.

Why are flights with stopovers cheaper?

If you’ve ever played around with flight search engines, you’ve probably seen more affordable prices to Europe with a stopover from Toronto than direct from Montreal.

Here’s an example where the segment between Montreal and London is the same on both routes, but adding a return trip to Toronto lowers the price.

Once again, it’s a question of supply and demand, and it’s not a mistake; that’s how pricing works. It’s very important to note that you can’t simply book the Toronto itinerary and decide to embark (or disembark) in Montreal. This practice is known as “ skiplagging ” and involves considerable risks and consequences.

Is it better to book your flight on platforms like Expedia or Skyscanner to save money?

Most of the time, the prices you can find on platforms like Expedia or Skyscanner are similar to what you can get on the airline’s official website.

Therefore, it’s best to book directly so you don’t have a third party to deal with if there’s ever a problem; third parties and airlines often tend to throw the ball back and forth on this.

Using credit card points for cheap flights with Air Transat

At present, Air Transat does not have a loyalty program like Air Canada with Aeroplan . So, to save on Air Transat flights, you’ll have to turn to credit card rewards points (travel points), specifically those that can be used to reimburse any travel purchase or against any expense.

All credit card issuers have travel points programs:

  • American Express Membership Rewards
  • BMO Rewards
  • NBC Rewards
  • CIBC Aventura
  • Desjardins Bonusdollars
  • HSBC Rewards
  • MBNA Rewards
  • RBC Avion Rewards
  • Scene+ Scotia

Some offer you the possibility :

  • book with any travel agency or airline
  • while others will have their own online agency, often offering the same prices.

Of course, it’s best to choose programs that offer more flexibility, but don’t overlook those that offer a little less!

Earn points to pay for a trip with Air Transat

There are two main ways to earn enough points to cover the cost of a flight with Air Transat :

  • get a welcome bonus when you sign up for a new credit card
  • maximize returns and rewards by paying for everyday purchases with the right credit card

In reality, you need a strategy that encompasses both. For example, the National Bank World Elite Mastercard ® gives 5X points when used at the grocery store (the biggest expense item for families) or in restaurants, so points add up fast! This is equivalent to a 5% return on your flights with Air Transat .

Then you can quickly build up your points portfolio with a welcome bonus, which you’ll receive once you’ve met the requirements. This generous contribution of points is a one-off. So you have to mix the two avenues.

If you’ve collected several types of points, how do you use them when it’s time to book?

Ideally, you don’t want to spread out too much. On the other hand, you can buy plane tickets with a credit card and one type of point, and keep the other points to pay for your accommodation. It’s an indirect way of saving on plane tickets with points; the savings are just distributed differently. It is also possible to pay with several credit cards when dealing with a travel agent.

How can I reduce the price of a plane ticket using points?

Each of the above programs has its own way of doing things, but the general principle is the same: you book your flight with Air Transat (or any other airline), and then redeem your points for a statement credit. Your purchase will be reimbursed with points.

Here’s an example with American Express Membership Rewards:

It should be noted, however, that we can maximize the value of our points with certain programs. In fact, American Express Membership Rewards points will always have a value of 10,000 points = $100, whether you use them to reimburse your airline ticket or for groceries.

However, NBC Rewards points have a higher redemption value when you book a flight, whether with Air Transat or another airline, on their Rewards à la Carte platform versus an account credit on your shopping :

We can see that it’s better to use NBC Rewards points for travel than for an account credit on any purchase. Finally, by booking with their platform, you can also earn more points!

Guides for each program can be found here :

Save on all-inclusive with Voyage Air Transat

For fans of all-inclusive packages with Air Transat , points are used in the same way as for airline tickets.

Here’s an example of how to redeem NBC Rewards points to save on an all-inclusive trip with Air Transat :

Bottom Line

Air Transat stands out for its extensive coverage in Europe and for vacations in the South. Airline tickets are often more affordable than their competitors. Then, with little touches like the Kids Club, it’s easy to see why many families choose Air Transat .

With a multitude of credit card rewards programs to choose from, the challenge is simply to maximize your savings on flights!
