“With the #MyOttawa Pass, Ottawa Tourism is switching gears and focusing on Ottawans as the first ones to help get Ottawa’s tourism industry back on its feet. We are promoting the #MyOttawa Pass as a way to rediscover our city and start spending money again at local tourism businesses, particularly at a time when, for them, every dollar counts,” Michael Crockatt, Ottawa Tourism’s president and CEO, said in a statement.

Some of the businesses represented in the discount collection are Holtz Spa, Ottawa Biplane Adventures, Saunders Farm, the Bytown Museum and the Ottawa Art Gallery.

In an average year, roughly 11 million visitors come to Ottawa and spend $2.2 billion. The comparable figure in 2020 will drop by more than 60 per cent to just $800 million because of COVID-19, Ottawa Tourism estimates.

You said it: let us see shrinkflation back to video.

A recent report confirms previous studies and what many shoppers have endured — perhaps unknowingly — for quite some time. The report identifies as much as 20 per cent of products have been the subject of shrinkflation over the last five years. Naturally, getting less product for the same or even higher price means much lower value for consumers, who are already seeing their grocery budgets stretched to or beyond the breaking point.

Federal legislators could implement a solution that is virtually cost-free for the government and consumers. As is the law in some other countries, manufacturers could be mandated to prominently display on labels products that have been affected by shrinkflation, showing the percentage reduction and the resulting increased price per unit (ounce, pound, dozen, etc.).

Including revised per-unit information would ensure price increases instituted (read: sneaked in) at the same time as size reductions would also be obvious to consumers. They may not boycott the product, but at least they would be armed with better information on which to base continuing purchase decisions or change brands.

How about it, Jagmeet Singh? You’re so seized with fighting for “struggling Canadians,” when will your Dippers introduce such a private member’s bill and force Comrade Justin Trudeau to acquiesce and pass it?

NOT RUNNING LIKE A BUSINESS

I could never figure out why The City of Ottawa couldn’t be run like a business. Then someone turned the lights on for me. Here are some things I never considered. When sales are slow for a prolonged period of time, owners consider laying staff off. The city considers the status quo in staffing as the right thing to do. Maybe add a few! In the real world, businesses might consider a reduction of services. On the other hand, the city is involved in far too many services that are not in their purview. Private enterprise is always keeping an eye on expenses. The city not so much.

I’ve been a resident of this city for 75 years and in that time I have never heard a city employee or elected official say, “We made a mistake.” They continue to spend.

In business, you make a mistake and you have no business.

“I had already shaken hands with (Redblacks head coach Bob Dyce) and a bunch of players and other coaches,” said Roughriders’ head coach Corey Mace. “Then (the officials) came and approached me and said that they were putting the play under review.

“And I was confused because they had waved the flag and the game was over.

“At that point, it was try to get an explanation which the on-field officials were waiting from the league’s replay booth and when everybody else heard the news, that’s when I heard the news.

“And it was just kind of hope everybody was still on the field; a few players already went to the locker room.”

“It was just a unique situation.”

It was the second time the Command Centre overturned a ruling on the field during overtime as Mace successfully challenged a call for pass interference on third down during Saskatchewan’s first OT possession, which resulted in a touchdown to extend the game.

The tie leaves the Riders with a 5-3-1 record, while the Redblacks move to 5-2-1.

“Crazy as any I’ve ever been part of,” said Riders’ quarterback Shea Patterson , who completed 30-of-49 passes for 299 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. “You go from a rollercoaster of a game, getting through the highs and lows, fighting together and finally you think you feel like you actually came out of it with a W.

“There’s the hugs and there’s the emotions of winning, almost walking off the field, until it gets kind of taken away from you.”

Thursday’s result was the first tie in the CFL since 2017 and first involving Saskatchewan since 2009.

“It’s a little weird feeling,” said Riders’ defensive back Rolan Milligan Jr., who had eight total tackles, an interception and a knockdown. “That’s my first time ever tying a game.

“It kind of goes both ways. It’s weird. Some guys are down, some guys are just like ‘it is what it is.’ ”

With heavy rain falling at TD Place in Ottawa, neither team could generate much offence early.

In the second quarter, Riders’ defensive lineman Miles Brown inadvertently rolled into Redblacks’ quarterback Dru Brown, who was forced to leave the game with a lower leg injury. Dustin Crum entered the game for Ottawa.

Crum threw for 211 yards and rushed for 72 more but Saskatchewan’s defence was able to hold the Redblacks to four field goals, while also blocking two kicks. Ottawa also had a punt single during regulation time.

For the Riders, they generated just three points through three quarters before Patterson made up for three interceptions earlier in the game by finding Shawn Bane Jr. for the 10-yard touchdown to tie the game 10-10 with under two minutes to go.

The nine-play, 70-yard drive was highlighted by a 33-yard catch by rookie receiver Dohnte Meyers, who had a team-high eight catches for 101 yards in his first career game.

“It was a monsoon in the first half, so we just had to battle the conditions and get through the adversity,” said Patterson. “Then finally, things started to click.

“We fought through the adversity. We fought through the highs and lows … just stayed together as brothers until the end.”

After an interception by Milligan, Saskatchewan’s Brett Lauther kicked a field goal to put the Riders up 13-10 with 45 seconds left before Ottawa’s Lewis Ward tied the game as time expired.

In overtime, Crum scrambled into the end zone from 11 yards out for a touchdown before the Redblacks missed the mandatory two-point convert.

With Saskatchewan needing a touchdown to extend the game, Patterson’s pass to Bane on third down fell incomplete.

However, Mace challenged the play for pass interference and the Riders were awarded a first down upon review.

On the next play, Patterson hit Samuel Emilus for the touchdown to tie the game. Saskatchewan couldn’t complete the two-point convert.

In double OT, Lauther put Saskatchewan up 22-19 before Saskatchewan sacked Crum on back-to-back plays.

However, on second down after Crum fumbled the ball — which was recovered by Saskatchewan’s Adam Auclair — the Command Centre stepped in and ruled roughing the passer on the play, which gave Ottawa a first down.

The Redblacks drove to the 14-yard line before Ward came in to kick a short field goal to end the game in a 22-22 tie.

“It wasn’t a win, which is always what we come out to do,” said Mace. “But it wasn’t a loss.

“Just something to build off — momentum-wise I guess — just that we played hard and we didn’t lose.”

After snapping a two-game losing skid, Saskatchewan will now get set to host the Montreal Alouettes on Aug. 16.

European airline announces annual 'all you can fly' pass

Wizz Air is selling a pass offering unlimited flights. (Roy Issa / AFP / Getty Images via CNN Newsource)

For some it’s the dream: a flight pass around Europe and the Mediterranean.

For others, of course, it’s an ecological nightmare.

Wizz Air’s new All You Can Fly pass will allow unlimited flights for pass holders for a year, starting September 25, for as little as 499 euros (US$549).

  • Download the CTV News App for breaking news alerts and video on all the top stories

That’s the price if bought today before midnight in Hungary, where the airline is based. After that, the price goes up to 599 euros (US$660).

If the price sounds too good to be true, that’s because, for many people, it will be. For some, however, it’ll be just the ticket – literally.

Flights can only be booked within 72 hours of travel, so it’s best for frequent flyers who can move at the last minute. And they can only be booked as one-way fares – meaning that most people will have to book an outbound flight without knowing when exactly it will be possible to return.

It’s not really possible to book one leg and cancel if another doesn’t appear, either – cancel three times and your pass will be canceled.

The pass is also set to renew automatically – so you’ll need to cancel it if you don’t want to continue.

So what do you get? Unlimited flights – up to three in a day – for the year. For each you’ll pay a flat fee of 9.99 euros (US$11) per segment.

This is the bare-bones ticket – if you want to add luggage, seating assignments, or priority boarding (which allows you a roll-on carry-on bag) you will have to pay extra. Bags routinely cost around 50 euros per segment.

The pass covers the whole Wizz Air network, which covers much of Europe, the Mediterranean and even the Middle East. Only domestic flights within Italy are not covered.

Members must supply a preferred departure airport, from which most of your flights are likely to leave. Most of these have already sold out, with departures from mainly central eastern Europe and Norway left. Not all flights need to leave from these airports, but the airline reserves the right to cancel the pass of those it has reason to think have signed up as being from one area, but are actually from another.

The airline also isn’t guaranteeing a ride on any plane with an available seat. Its terms and conditions are rather opaque on availability, saying that “the provision of flight tickets depends on a number of internal and external factors” including the seat capacity, number of passengers on the flight, and the number of total registered All You Can Fly members – currently set at a maximum of 10,000.

The airline was not able to explain at which load level the seats are allowed or disallowed to CNN.

So is it worth it? Possibly, if you’re prepared to fly at little notice and be flexible about a return. Also, if you travel light. Most importantly, if you’re a solo traveller – even if two of you buy passes, there’s no guarantee you’ll both get space on a flight.

  • Follow the CTV News channel on WhatsApp

But you’d also need to be a frequent flyer to make it worthwhile. One frequent Wizz flyer, who regularly flies between the U.K. and Italy, said that they usually pay around 50 euros for a basic one-way ticket, booked a couple of weeks in advance.

In June, Wizz was named the worst airline for U.K. flight delays for the third year in a row.

And although its fleet of new Airbuses makes it one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets around, the rapid expansion of budget airlines is one of the main drivers of aviation’s dismal environmental record, according to lobbying group Transport & Environment.

CFL 2024 Season Week 11 Game Preview: Ottawa Redblacks at Calgary Stampeders

  • Calgary Stampeders

Week 11 of the CFL season kicks off with a cross-division matchup between the Ottawa Redblacks and the Calgary Stampeders on Thursday night.

The Redblacks are coming off a 22-22 tie with the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week. After Dru Brown’s injury, Jeremiah Masoli was named the starter at quarterback this week, despite Dustin Crum stepping in last week. The strength of Ottawa has been on defense, as the unit is second in the CFL in total defense (332.6) .

Calgary allowed 32 second-half points in last week’s loss to the Toronto Argonauts . The Stampeders defense has allowed 28.7 points per game, which is the third most in the league. One positive aspect of the season is that quarterback Jake Maier is one of the few starting quarterbacks from Week 1 who is still starting going into Week 11 without missing a game.

Ottawa enters the game with a 5-2-1 record while the Stampeders are 4-5.

Game Information

Line: Stampeders -4, O/U 49.5

Date/Location: Thursday, August 15, 2024, at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, Alberta

Kickoff Time: 9:00 pm EST

Weather Forecast: Partly Sunny, 14 Degrees Celsius

TV/Streaming: TSN, RDS, CFL+

Injury Report/Inactives

On the latest injury report for the CFL , Ottawa has five players who are out, with Dru Brown being the biggest name as he deals with a foot injury. Breakout wide receiver Kalil Pimpleton is also out with a hand injury. Three defensive players will not be playing, including defensive back Money Hunter (shoulder), linebacker Lucas Cormier (foot) and defensive lineman Nigel Romick (hamstring).

Calgary will be without three players, with special teams ace Adam Konar out with a hamstring injury. Backup quarterback Matt Shiltz practiced all week but won’t play through his ankle injury. Wide receiver Tyson Middlemost is dealing with a hamstring injury so he won’t be on the field.

Keys to Victory

Masoli may need time to ease into his first game in over a year, but he can lean on running back Ryquell Armstead to get the running game going. Pass rushers Lorenzo Mauldin and Bryce Carter need to pressure Maier to force him to make mistakes.

Calgary must put together four strong quarters, which means if the Stampeders find success in passing or running the ball, they must stick with it and keep their foot on the pedal. Their defense and special teams failed the team last week. The kickoff coverage must improve and the team needs to eliminate big plays to be allowed.

There will be a lot of excitement for Masoli's return to the field for Ottawa. Calgary has been known for trading wins and losses back and forth throughout the season. With the Stampeders undefeated at home this season, watch for Maier to go off and help propel Calgary to a win.

Calgary Stampeders 24, Ottawa Redblacks 21
