Take a Seahorse Farm Tour in Kona

Tucked away on the shoreline behind the Kona Airport, you will find a hidden gem of marine education and conservation. Here, you can learn about ocean conservation and the world’s endangered sea horse species. The Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm is unique – as the world’s first and only sea horse farm, established to breed and raise sea horses for home aquariums and relieve pressure on wild and endangered sea horse populations.

If you choose to visit, you can take an eye-opening tour to see their aquaculture operations, hold a sea horse in your hands, and learn about different types of seahorses and sea dragons. On the seahorse farm tour, a marine biologist leads visitors past adult mating pairs and baby sea horses (called fry). On the tour, the lead biologist shares interesting facts about sea horse biology. Did you know that for seahorses, it’s the males that get pregnant and give birth to hundreds of baby sea horses?

At the end of the tour, you will get the chance to hold a sea horse in your hands! You will be amazed as the biologist helps one of these fragile and sensitive creatures wrap its tail around your fingers. Look into the eyes of a sea horse and see why so many people love these small and unique fish.

Finally, you will go to a mini aquarium to see the 34 species of sea horses and sea dragons that they keep on site as part of the Seahorses of Hawaii Foundation’s conservation program. This program develops captive breeding programs to help improve populations of sea horses around the world. Proceeds from the tours, gift shop, and sales of sea horses for aquariums help to support this conservation work.

Teen riders, only 13-17 years old, young riders, 7-12 years old, go horseback riding on the trails, bluffs, and beach.

This ride takes you down the Coastal Equestrian Trail, onto the bluffs above the ocean, onto Poplar Beach, going south for about 30 minutes, and then back to the ranch.

Surf Lessons Encuentro Beach

Along with the Caribbean sunshine, one of the consistent things you can rely on in Cabarete is the waves. Come rain or shine, Playa Encuentro has a wave almost every day of the year. With different peaks suiting beginners, pros, and everyone in between, it is the perfect place to learn and improve. There is a choice of 5 surf schools, all with experienced and knowledgeable instructors offering lessons, coaching, and rentals. Whether the class is for an adult or a child, you can feel at ease. The beach is just a 5-minute drive from us and is the perfect place to spend the morning or the whole day.

River Boat Tour with Dominican Lunch

The consistent wind, golden beaches, and glistening ocean are normally the first things that spring to mind when you think of Cabarete. However, the surrounding vast tropical jungle and river are equally full of adventures.

East of Cabarete is Rugama Tours. A rustic riverboat tour that meanders down the Yasica River amongst the rich jungle. The boat tour begins at the Rugama Tours base, which has an ecological garden full of vibrant plants and fresh fruits. It has an array of reptiles and animals including snakes, parrots, tortoises, peacocks, lizards, and crocodiles. For the adults, they have a beer garden, soft drinks, and a cafe with delicious authentic Dominican food. The boat cruise emerges at the river mouth (La Boca) and offers a stop on the sandy beach, or nearby Wilson’s Restaurant. When the wind is up, the river mouth is a hot spot for kitesurfers.

Horseback Riding along the Beach

Vacations offer a much-needed rest from the hustle of day-to-day life.  At Sea Horse Ranch, we have our own Equestrian Center so your children do not have to travel far for a professional and unique horseback riding experience. The center has an array of well-trained horses suited for all different riding levels, along with experienced instructors who offer training in the basics, to advanced dressage and jumping. Surrounding the stables and large outdoor riding areas are miles of lush greenery and bridal paths leading to secluded beaches. These make for a spectacular ride for all ages and you can decide whether you prefer it at a steady stroll or a quickened pace.

Monkey Jungle Zip Line And Adventures

Located just a 30-minute drive from Sea Horse Ranch is Monkey Jungle. The site has a 5-acre enclosure inhabited by a large group of friendly Squirrel and Capuchin Monkeys who will jump on your shoulders, head & hands, especially if you have food. They make for quite the photo opportunity, so don’t forget your camera.

The second site has a 4,500ft, 7-station zip line adventure and is the most breathtaking way to admire the vast jungle below. There are experienced staff on standby at every platform and for children under 8, you can opt-in for an escort to assist and accompany them on the zip line.

Tennis Lessons

Located within Sea Horse Ranch resort is our Tennis Club , boasting five clay courts, two of which are equipped with lighting for night play, a pro shop, and a clubhouse for spectators. Our professional instructors offer private lessons for adults and children of all levels and a tennis clinic 3 days a week, covering tennis fitness, serving, doubles, game tactics, and more. In between classes and courses, the courts are also open to just hitting some balls, joining a tournament, and playing games like King of the Court or Round Robin. It’s not only a great way to keep the kids active and burn some energy, but they’ll also make new friends too.
