Summers (From March to June)

The weather is temperate during these months, with the temperature at a comfortable range of 11 to 15 degrees Celsius. Therefore, first, you’ve to reach Joshimath which is situated at a distance of 276 KM from Haridwar, stay there for the night and leave early in the morning for Auli.

Try to leave early in the morning to reach Joshimath by evening because most of the road is surrounded by mountains so you can’t travel during the night. Therefore, you’ve to stay one night in Joshimath to reach Auli.

From the road journey, you can easily get a shared jeep and taxi in Joshimath that takes around 30 to 40 minutes to reach Auli. The taxi or jeep can cost you around 1000 to 2000 INR from Joshimath to Auli so it’s good to book a taxi from Haridwar to Auli rather than Haridwar to Joshimath. It can help you save lots of money.

The Top 8 Things to Do in Auli, Uttarakhand

auli places to visit around

anand purohit/Getty Images

Auli, one of the best places to visit in Uttarakhand , rose to prominence as a snow skiing destination after hosting the first South Asian Winter Games in 2011. While Gulmarg in Kashmir is undoubtedly more accessible and has superior facilities, less-commercialized Auli offers serene conifer-lined slopes and spectacular Himalayan mountain views. It's located about 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) above sea level in the Chamoli district of Uttarkhand, on the way to Badrinath . Admittedly, it's not easy to get there (be prepared for a long 10 hour drive from Haridwar or Rishikesh ). The uncrowded, pristine terrain is worth it though! Here's the pick of things to do in Auli, even if you're not a skier. The destination has something for nature-lovers throughout most of the year except the monsoon season , during July and August.

Ski, Of Course!

Varma Gajarla/Getty Images

Auli's south-facing slopes mean that the ski season is limited to just a month or so, from around mid January to the end of February, each year. Snowfall has become temperamental too, due to global warming. Downhill and cross-country skiing are both possible at Auli, although the skiable area isn't large. There are four downhill runs, with one ideally suited to beginners. A 500-meter J-bar standing surface lift services the beginner run, while the other runs are connected by an 800-meter chairlift. One ride on the chairlift costs 500 rupees per person, while it's 50-100 rupees for the J-bar. Day passes are available for skiers.

There are a range of options for learning how to ski, for all levels. These include freelance instructors, courses by private operators, and seven and 14-day courses conducted by Uttarakhand Tourism's Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (which provides and maintains Auli's infrastructure). Local skiing champion Ajay Bhatt founded Auli Ski and Snowboard School , the recommended private operator. If you enroll in a course, the cost will include accommodations, equipment rental, lift fees, meals and training. Otherwise, you'll need to arrange and pay for everything separately if you get lessons from a freelance instructor,

Ride Asia's Longest Aerial Tramway

During winter, the aerial tramway/ropeway is the easiest way to reach Auli. It runs from Joshimath to Auli, over a distance of 4 kilometers (2.5 miles), and is the only way of getting to Auli if the road is covered in snow. The journey takes about 25 minutes and costs 1,000 rupees per person, return. Tickets can be purchased from the ticket counter at Joshimath. There are fixed departure times every 15-25 minutes throughout the day, with the first departure at 9:15 a.m. and last departure at 4:20 p.m. in winter. However, the aerial tramway will often only run if it's filled to capacity of about 20 people.

Spot the Himalayan Peaks

Richard I'Anson/Getty Images

One of the things that makes Auli special is that it's surrounded by so many major Himalayan mountain peaks. These include Nanda Devi (7,817 meters), Kamet (7,756 meters), Mana Parvat (7,272 meters), Chaukhamba (7,138 meters), Trishul (7,120 meters), Dunagiri (7,066 meters), Nanda Kot (6,806 meters), Hathi Parbat (6,727 meters), Gauri Parbat (6,719 meters), Neelkanth (6,597 meters), Bethartoli (6,354 meters) and Panchchula (5,904 meters). Nanda Devi is India's highest peak, not taking into account Mount Kanchenjunga (which is partially in Nepal). A panoramic view of these powerful snow-clad peaks, which literally loom over you from some places in Auli, has a profound impact.

Trek to the Highest Point in Auli

Dinodia Photo/Getty Images

For unsurpassed views of peaks such as Nanda Devi and Dunagiri head up to Gorson Bugyal (meadow). At 3,056 meters above sea level, it's the highest point in Auli. Although it's not very far from the aerial tramway station, the steep incline requires a picturesque 2-hour trek through oak forest to get there. Alternatively, it's possible to ride on a pony at a cost of about 800 rupees. The meadow is particularly attractive during spring, when it's carpeted in lush green vegetation. If you're feeling energetic, you can also include Chattrakund, a pretty sweet water lake, in your day trek around Auli. Do take a guide with you to Chattrakund, to avoid getting lost in the dense forest.

Visit the Temple Where Lord Hanuman Rested

Auli is even connected to the great Hindu epic, "The Ramayana," which narrates the life story of Lord Ram. Accordingly to mythology, Lord Hanuman rested there for a while when traveling to the Himalayas to get a healing herb called Sanjeevani for Lord Ram's brother Laxman, who was injured while fighting demons in Sri Lanka. The small temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman sits near the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam hotel at Auli and provides a magnificent view.

Check Out the Artificial Lake

Another of Auli's claims to fame is its artificial lake, which is said to be one of the highest in the world. It's located next to the Clifftop Club . The water from the lake is used to feed the snow-making machines that have been installed to improve snow cover. However, the ability to make snow is dependent on weather conditions, and unfortunately unseasonably high winter temperatures have had a negative impact on this.

Glamp Under the Stars

If you don't care about snow and simply want to enjoy the outdoors, glamping is a fabulous way to do so. Auli Woods is the first luxury campsite in Auli, with just six fully-equipped premium tents nestled into the mountainside. It was set up by mountaineer and skiing champion Ajay Bhatt, who also has a popular luxury homestay (Himalayan Abode) in nearby Joshimath, in addition to founding Auli Ski and Snowboard School and Himalayan Snow Runner adventure trekking company. (Yes, he's done a lot to promote tourism in the area!). Auli Woods is open from April to January, although the weather is best from May to June and September to October. The cost is 7,500 rupees per night for a double, including breakfast and dinner. Plenty of activities are offered including village visits, jungle walks, night trails, day hikes, horse riding, and photography.

Go Bird Watching

In April and May, after the snow has cleared, birds start venturing to the higher regions of Uttarakhand. Birding enthusiasts will be delighted with the unusual Himalayan species that can be spotted around Auli, such as the Himalayan Monal (a type of pheasant) and Himalayan Griffon vulture. The forests are also home to doves, eagles, tits, jays, woodpeckers, spotted nutcrackers, and sunbirds. Serious birders should consider staying at Devi Darshan Lodge , run by community-owned ecotourism company Mountain Shepherds . Their local staff are qualified mountaineers and conduct outstanding bird watching hikes. They can take you completely off-the-beaten-track to places tourists don't visit.

A Travel Guide to Visiting Auli, Uttarakhand

19 mar a travel guide to visiting auli, uttarakhand.

Auli is still one of the lesser-known secret hill stations of Uttarakhand that has not been swarmed over by tourists. At least yet. And that in itself brings respite from the otherwise crowded attractions in the area. Otherwise known as a fantastic ski resort, Auli has lush green open meadows that are great for a trek during the summers as well.

I loved it because, after the intense experience of the Kedarnath and Badrinath pilgrimage , Auli was a more light-hearted relaxed touristic spot with hardly any tourists for miles. But you need to know a few things to plan a trip to Auli. You can live there or just visit it in a day and be back. Here is a complete travel guide to visit Auli.

Auli, Uttarakhand

Why visit Auli

As I already mentioned, Auli is especially attractive as a ski resort. The 5-km stretch on the gentle slopes of Auli is perfect for both beginners and advanced skiers. Auli ropeway service has a cable car and a ski lift that adds to the infrastructure required by skiers. Apart from that there are several ski schools that tourists can check out for some fun ski experience.

Now, Auli is fantastic in winter but there is a different side to Auli during the summer. Due to its location, Auli serves as a gateway to several treks on this route towards some of the most beautiful Himalayan peaks and ranges. Some of the short treks like Gorson Bugyal are just a few kilometres away. But Auli is also the starting point for some long-range treks towards Nanda Devi passing Saptakund and Homkund on the way.

When to visit Auli

Your visit to Auli pretty much depends upon what you want to do. If you are looking for a winter wonderland, snowfall and some skiing, December – March is the best time to visit. Auli gets heavy snow all around the winter but January-February is the peak season. Pack warm though.

If you are not fond of winter or snow, you can always look out for Spring and Autumn seasons. These are shoulder months when the places are not overly crowded by tourists and you can enjoy the place to yourself. April, September, October and November are fantastic months to enjoy the place when the weather is pleasant and the skies are clear.

The summer months of May, and June are ideal for long treks when the snow melts completely and trekkers look forwards to some challenging trails. Auli may get a little warm, but it is perfect to explore beyond the meadows. If you are planning to visit Badrinath during this time, Auli makes a great stopover.

The months of July and August receive heavy rainfall in the region. Landslides are common and the outdoors are muddy and swampy which makes trekking high altitudes treacherous. So maybe avoid this time.

Auli in Winters

How to reach Auli

To reach Auli, you must reach Joshimath before. From Joshimath, you can reach Auli only using two types of transportation – the road and the ropeway. No other modes of transportation run on this route. However, during the winter months, you cannot access Auli by road at all. Therefore between December – mid-March, you may have to rely solely on the ropeway to reach and return from Auli to Joshimath.

Reaching Joshimath

To reach Joshimath you can either take a train to Rishikesh or Haridwar or take a flight to Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun. From there, hop on to a bus or a taxi to reach Joshimath which takes around 10 hours for the journey.

You can get a bus at Rishikesh Bus Station that starts early morning between 4 am and 6 am. You can get the ticket at the station or book one in advance on any online portal like makemytrip.com , abhibus.com or redbus.in . Unless you are planning to break your journey in between, you need to start your journey before sunrise to reach Joshimath by evening. You can check the same for buses from Dehradun as well.

Another option is to take shared sumo for the journey. It may not be as comfortable but it will be slightly faster. The prices are almost the same. However, all sumos also leave before sunrise so you need to be super early to start to catch one. No schedules are available online so it’s better to ask around for directions at the bus station.

You can take a private taxi/minivan for the journey. The average rental of a day is ₹3500 for a 4-wheeler car and ₹6000 for a tempo traveller (in 2022) with a driver. Do check before the inclusions and exclusions of your trip. This works best if you are in a group.

Reaching Auli by Ropeway

To take the ropeway, you need to reach the base of the Auli ropeway ticket counter first near Joshimath. The ticket counter or base station is just around 5km from Joshimath town centre but you will need transportation to reach here. You can buy a ticket directly at the ticket counter itself or you can buy them in advance on the official government website .

The round-ticket cost per person is ₹500 for the round journey. If you are buying the tickets at the counter, you better take some cash with you. Once you have your tickets, you may have to wait a little while for your turn to board the ropeway.

The journey on the ropeway is an experience in itself. It lasts about 25 minutes and you can get a glimpse of some of the most beautiful peaks in the region. It gets cold as you go up so better take some warm clothes with you even if it feels warm in Johshimath. The ropeway is one of the highest ropeways in India.

Once you are at the top and decide to return, go back and report at the counter. You may have to wait for a while before you get your turn on the return journey back.

At Auli base ropeway station

Reaching Auli by Road

During the summer months, you can also take the journey to Auli by road. You can hire sumo or a car at Joshimath to Auli GMVN Ski Resort for around ₹800. This turns out to be cheaper if you are in a group, but you may miss out on the ropeway experience.

Although you can still take a chair lift to the upper terminal from the Ski resort which costs around ₹100 per person for the ride.

As I mentioned, the roadways are closed during the winter months when it snows heavily, so this option is open only during the summertime. Unless you are returning on the same day, keep the number of the cab driver in handy to help you return back to Joshimath.

Where to Stay

There are a few hotels and resorts in Auli, but I wouldn’t say that it will guarantee a place if you do not book ahead of time, especially during peak season. But if you plan, you can totally get a fantastic place at a great price. I wouldn’t worry about the view since no matter where you are staying, the views will be gorgeous.

Now if you have a lot of luggage, you can stay at these places since you get direct access from a vehicle. Here are a few places where you can stay:

Budget: GMVN Guest House , Mountain View Stay , Royal Village Resort

Luxury: Casa Himalaya , Mountain Rover Auli Resort

However, if you would love an even better view with the ski experience, you can head to a higher altitude. You will not have car access to these places and will need to carry your luggage yourself.

Things to do at Auli

1. experience the auli ropeway.

More chances are that you will experience the ropeway on your way to Auli anyway. But in case, you end up taking the road, you must take a ride on the Auli ropeway or the ski lift. The height of the ropeway not only gives an aerial view of the meadows in Auli but also gives a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains. The mountains are covered with snow for the most part of the year and are so gorgeous to look at. I enjoyed the ride, and I think so will you.

Places to visit in Auli

2. Ski on the gentle slopes of Auli

This one is only available during the snowy winter months between January to March. So really depends upon your timing. But it would be an experience. Even if you do not know much about skiing, I think it would be a lot of fun to take a day lesson from one of the skiing schools in the area.

And if you have a little more experience, the chairlifts are ready to take you to the top of the slope from where you can make your way down in style. You can rent ski gear here as well. GMVN conducts several ski courses over a period of 7-14 days that you can participate in. On top of that, the local authority conducts events during the snow season for tourists and ski enthusiasts.

3. Hike to Gorson Bugyal

Gorson Bugyal is a meadow around 3km from Auli. Bugyal in Garhwali means meadow itself. It is not a very steep trek. But you will need some fitness level to do it since the altitude is high. Or just take your time with a few breaks on the way. You will pass through some cosy coniferous forests and a small temple on the way. Take some food and water with you since you won’t find them here.

The view of the surrounding valleys from Gorson Bugyal is astounding. You really can get a 360-degree view of the Himalayan ranges, mostly covered in snow. We also caught snowfall here that was so much fun!

Ponies are available from Auli with guides who are ready to accompany you to the top and back. If you are unsure but still want some hiking experience, you can take a pony to the top and trek back on foot. It is not very far honestly. The pony will cost you ₹500 per person even if you wish to hike back on foot.

View from Gorson Bugyal

4. Hike to Kuari Bugyal

Kuari Bugyal (also mentioned as Kwani Bugyal) is another trek from Joshimath that has some breathtaking views. The endpoint is the Kuwari pass where the trail goes as Joshimath-Auli-Gurso Bugyal-Kwani Bugyal which rewards you with some serious views of Nanda Devi and Dunagiri mountain ranges.

The trek on this route goes through lovely green oak trees and green meadows that in itself are therapeutic in nature. However, there is also another starting point that starts near Hanuman Shila that one can take. Take a local guide with you since you will need help to navigate here as there are no roads or trails but complete wilderness.

5. Enjoy a high-altitude artificial lake

Well honestly, it is more of a wonder than a beauty. And if you are planning to trek in the area, you will find better-looking lakes. But it still is a great feat to build an artificial lake at such a high altitude with a sparse civilization around.

The lake is not just decorative. It has freezing coils at the bottom to create artificial snow for tourists. A form of suction or pump carries the snow to huge fans that spreads it over the ski slopes. So I think it is worth checking out!

15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in Moscow

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Dec 23, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Moscow is one of Europe's most enigmatic destinations, home to a fascinating history and colorful, awe-inspiring architecture you won't find anywhere else in the world. Moscow might be one of the most populous cities in the world with over 11 million inhabitants, but this hasn't changed its strong cultural and social traditions.

Walk the cobblestone streets of the Red Square or the banks of the Moskva River early in the morning, and it's hard to tell what century you're in.

Tsarist architecture, must-see churches, and glamorous shopping opportunities blend together for a visual experience you won't forget. For ideas on what to see and do while visiting Russia, here's our list of top tourist attractions in Moscow.

1. Marvel at the Size of the Kremlin

2. catch a performance at the bolshoi theatre, 3. shop at the luxurious gum, 4. make your way into lenin's mausoleum, 5. spend an hour (or three) at red square, 6. discover history at the museum of cosmonautics, 7. ride the stunning moscow metro, 8. explore the moscow state integrated museum-reserve, 9. spend a rainy day at the tretyakov gallery, 10. walk up and down arbat street, 11. stop by the vdnkh all-russian exhibition centre, 12. wander around gorky park, where to stay in moscow for sightseeing, map of tourist attractions & things to do in moscow.

Kremlin

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

GUM

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Komsomolskaya Station on the Moscow metro

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

Kolomenskoye Estate

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

Tretyakov Gallery

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Night view of Arbat Street decorated for the holidays

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

VDNKh All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Friendship of the Peoples Fountain

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Main entrance gate to Gorky Park

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. There's free Wi-Fi and sockets for charging your phone, as well as many food stands and plenty of wild animals, including deer, rabbits, and pheasants.

Visitors can rent paddle boats and bicycles to explore the park-and from May to October, there is also an open-air movie theater, as well as scheduled presentations by street performers, musicians, and artists. Gorky Park attracts the young and old, so don't be surprised to see a mix of people exercising, playing chess, and sunbathing.

Auli’I Cravalho shares why SPAM holds a special place in her heart, interview

By cristine struble | aug 15, 2024.

The IMDb Official Portrait Studio At D23 2024

While Auli’l Cravalho may have traveled far from her Hawaiian home, her connection to the culture and food from the stunning island paradise is never far from her table. In an effort to help Hawaii and its rebuilding after the devasting fires that impacted Maui, Cravalho partnered with SPAM to encourage people to open their hearts and their tables to helping the Hawaiian residents.

Many people were first introduced to Auli’l Cravalho as the voice of Moana. While some of us can hear the powerful ballad, “How Far I’ll Go” just by referencing the Disney Princess’ name, Cravalho is more than just a singular role. Over the years, she has dazzled on screen and stage with her powerful presence.

Although she might have left the island behind, that deep connection to her home is always close to her heart. More importantly, the food of her childhood is often found in her kitchen.

As many people appreciate, SPAM is a Hawaiian staple. Whether it is that simple musubi snack, an ingredient in fried rice, or eaten however people please, that sizzle, pork, mmm infuses its flavor in a multitude of recipes.

Recently, Cravalho partnered with SPAM to showcase a new collection of musubi merchandise that benefits Aloha United Way. Although it is one year since the Lahaina wildfires ravaged the landscape, the community still needs assistance. 100% of the proceeds from this collection will be donated to the charity.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The SPAM® Brand (@spambrand)

Through her SPAM partnership, Auli’l Cravalho graciously spent some time talking to me about her Hawaiian heritage, a few ways that she enjoys SPAM, and some upcoming projects. While I have heard her voice many times at Disney events, the opportunity to see her face light up talking about her connection to her Hawaiian culture was inspiring.

Before delving into her new projects, we had to sizzle up some SPAM talk. While the ingredient can be misunderstood by some, Cravalho has a different approach. She explained how the food is enjoyed around the world. “I am Hawaiian, Chinese, Puerto Rican, Portuguese and Irish. I have to say that quite a few of those ethnicities eat SPAM. In Hawaii we are big fans of SPAM. We fry it with a teriyaki sauce, enjoy it with some eggs and rice, or add it to ramen. Also, a friend recently used it like a pate on toast. Since it is already fully cooked, there are so many ways to eat it.”

Given that SPAM can be eaten morning, noon, and night, it might be time for some people to discover the flavorful food. More importantly, the latest merchandise line is a way for people to support Hawaii and its quest to rebuild.

As Cravalho explained, “Lahaina is still rebuilding, and it is going to take several years to rebuild. I really appreciate the SPAM brand, who knows that it is an island favorite, choosing to give back in this way.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Auliʻi Cravalho (@auliicravalho)

“Hawaii, and Maui specifically, are many up of really strong individuals. Since much of our economy is built on tourism, it is important for people to know that Maui is open. For people who are looking to give back in another way, remember the impact when visiting the islands. A moment of gratitude for people being welcomed into their home can go a long way.”

Since the table is often a place where people best understand the hospitality and cultural connection, Cravalho shared how food memories hold a special place in her heart. As she spoke, it is clear that food nourishes both the body and soul.

Cravalho said, “food is so important. Even just cooking rice. I remember when I was younger and I tried to cook rice. I put it in the rice cooker and it came out bad because I didn’t wash it. My mom explained to me how she learned, what she did growing up, and all those stories of being in the kitchen with her siblings.”

“It is heartwarming for me to think about those stories. That food really connects us to heritage and these childhood moments. Hawaii is a very special place that is a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities. The food is really nurtured and appreciated.”

Since food makes her feel connected to home, Cravalho has packed a few items from home for her upcoming stay in New York. She will be making her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles in Cabaret . When asked about her upcoming role in the celebrated musical, Cravalho’s excitement was clear.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be playing Sally Bowles. It is an absolute dream come true. I love singing and I feel that Sally, as a character, allows me to really lean into the vocals and the story. I feel like that I’m constantly being challenged, which I am very grateful for.”

While she is embarking on a new experience on Broadway, an old chum is waiting in the wings for her. Moana 2 is set to return to theaters this fall. In this installment, the beloved character looks a little different, and it is a first for a Disney Princess.

Cravalho said, ‘I love Moana for her character, for the fact that she is brave ,intelligent, and loves her family. She will journey across the sea, way beyond the reef, to protect our community. But, I also love Moana , the film, for its themes of community, themes of writing about the imbalance between man and nature, and even holding demigods to a standard.”

“I think that one of the reasons that Moana is so beloved is because so many families can see themselves in the story. They can remember the first time that they left their community and it was scary. When they came back, they learned so much that could benefit their community. I was on the same journey when I was cast in this role. Now, I’m turning 24 and I feel like I have grown up beside her.”

A first for a Disney Princess, viewers will see an older, wiser Moana in the next chapter. As Cravalho shared, it is the first time that a Disney Princess has been allowed to age.

Cravalho said, “When we meet her in again, she'll be a little older. We can see that growth of going beyond the reef and coming back home, what it means to her people for wayfinding. Then on the next adventure, that that growth is not done yet, you've still got a long ways to go.”

Like Moana, Auli’I Cravalho has learned from each adventure but never loses sight of her connection to Hawaii. Even that forkful of SPAM can be the flavor that brings all those memories back. She might come and go from the shore, she will always find her way home.

For anyone who would like to support the rebuilding efforts in Maui, proceeds from the sale of SPAM Musubi Collection will be donated to Aloha United Way.

The Big Picture

  • Temuera Morrison is returning for Moana 2, lending both his speaking and singing voice to Chief of Motunui.
  • Original cast members Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson are set to reprise their roles in the highly-anticipated sequel.
  • Moana 2 's trailer dropped on August 11, promising an adventure unlike anything fans have seen before.

Temuera Morrison , the speaking voice for Moana's father, Chief of Motunui , in the first movie, is set to reprise his role in Moana 2 . That’s not all! This time around, he also intends to lend his vocal talents to his character in the second installment of the fan-favorite Disney movie.

According to Agents of Fandom on X (formerly Twitter), Joseph Deckelmeier announced at Fan Expo Chicago that Morrison will not just be voicing Chief of Motunui but will also be the singing voice behind the man in the highly-anticipated installment. In the first movie, the songs were brought to life by Christopher Jackson . Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson are also set to reprise their roles as Moana and Maui, respectively.

The cast for Moana 2 will also see the return of Alan Tudyk as the crazed chicken Hei Hei and Nicole Scherzinger as Moana’s mother, Sina. The movie will also see some new cast members jump on the bandwagon, including Rose Matafeo , who plays a young woman from Moana’s tribe named Loto — she designs and maintains the ship. Newcomers also comprise David Fane as Kele, an elder in the community responsible for the vegetables, and Hualālai Chung as Moni, a youngster fan of Moana.

The Trailer for 'Moana 2' Exceeded All Expectations

The highly anticipated trailer for Moana 2 dropped on August 11, 2024 , and fans are waiting with bated breath for the movie to hit theatres later this year on November 27, 2024 . The sequel to Moana was initially supposed to be a Disney+ series , but the story was later turned into a feature film.

The story in Moana 2 is set to take a 3-year leap from where the original film left off . Disney’s official synopsis hints at the plot of Moana 2 , centered around how she receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors , leading Moana to journey to the far seas of Oceania into dangerous, long-lost waters. The synopsis ends on an exciting note, setting the tone for the film with the following words :

“For an adventure, unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

Naturally, considering that Disney original movies boast banger soundtracks, Moana 2 will grace screens with a fresh set of original music! However, Lin-Manuel Miranda , who handled the soundtrack for Moana , will not be returning. Moana 2 will see Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear taking over the soundtrack for the coveted second installment. Fans have only been graced with a peak at one song, “We’re Back,” the first look for which was part of the footage shown at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival earlier this year.

Moana 2 is set to hit theaters on November 27, 2024 . In the meantime, you can watch Moana on Disney+.

Moana sets out on another daring voyage, venturing into uncharted territories to save her island from a looming ancient danger. Joined by the demigod Maui and her steadfast friends, she braves perilous seas and encounters new allies along the way. Her quest leads to revelations about her ancestors and deeper insights into her bond with the ocean.

Bob Iger teases 'Mandalorian' movie, 'Moana' sequel and 'Incredibles 3' at D23 fan event

  • Disney hosted its official biennial fan club meeting, D23, on Saturday.
  • During the event, CEO Bob Iger teased the return of fan-favorite franchises in new movies and shows.
  • Pedro Pascal will return for a "Mandalorian" movie, and new sequels for "Moana" and "Toy Story" are coming.

Insider Today

At Disney's biennial D23 event this weekend, CEO Bob Iger teased the return of fan-favorite characters from "The Mandalorian" and "Toy Story" in new movies and shows from the entertainment giant.

The event, which runs through August 11th in Anaheim, California — where Disneyland Park makes its home — highlights the projects Disney is working on in its animation studios and theme parks worldwide.

In past years, the D23 exposition has unveiled new trailers and offered sneak peeks at new attractions, including live-action series for Disney+ and new projects from Pixar Animation Studios .

"It is such a privilege for me to lead such a remarkable company that brings joy to so many people around the world — both to the young, and as Walt liked to say, the young at heart," Iger said Friday night as he kicked off the Disney Entertainment Showcase. "We have a lot to be proud of and even more to look forward to."

Among the projects Disney highlighted at this year's event was a trailer for an upcoming film from the "Star Wars" universe, "The Mandalorian and Grogu " directed by Jon Favreau. The film, starring Pedro Pascal, is set for release on May 22, 2026, and is currently in production.

The expo also showcased "Moana 2," which will debut in theaters on November 27 of this year. The film will feature the return of the voice of Moana , Auli'i Cravalho, and Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson as Maui, in addition to new characters like Moana's little sister, Simea.

The studio also revealed they are working on sequels in the "Toy Story" and "Incredibles" franchises. "Toy Story 5" will be released in theaters on June 19, 2026, but "The Incredibles 3" does not yet have a release date.

Disney didn't stop there. The company also announced release dates for "Avatar: Fire and Ash," the latest in the James Cameron series following the alien race of the Na'vi that will be released next year, and concept art for "Frozen 3," which will hit movie theaters in 2027.

A new trailer for the photorealistic animated " Mufasa: The Lion King ," which will be released this December, closed out the showcase.

"Our deep bond with fans, forged over a century of storytelling, is stronger today than ever before — driven by the unmatched strength of our creative studios, the wide appeal of our brands and franchises, and the innovative ways that we bring our stories to life in our theme parks and experiences," Iger said Friday during his opening remarks.

He added that the world needs to be entertained — perhaps now more than ever — and the company takes that responsibility "seriously."

"We are grateful for every moment, every memory that we're fortunate enough to be part of," Iger said. "And we're grateful to you for caring so much about the things we create and inviting Disney into your lives in such profound ways."

Representatives for Disney directed Business Insider to a press release about the event but did not respond to questions about the release date for "Incredibles 3" and other newly announced projects.
