Willie Nelson to perform in Des Moines in second stop in Iowa this year

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - Willie Nelson will be making two stops in Iowa this year.

The country music star just announced he’ll perform at Lauridsen Amphitheater at Water Works Park, at 2251 George Flagg Parkway in Des Moines, on June 27 as part of the Field Daze Music Series.

In a Facebook post, the venue said presale for tickets starts at 10 a.m. on Thursday, and public sale starts at 10 a.m. on Friday. For more information, click here .

This second show announcement comes after the country music star announced a show at the McGrath Amphitheatre in Cedar Rapids on May 17.

Willie Nelson is performing at Lauridsen Amphitheater Tuesday night. It's the country music legend's second time in Iowa this year.

Sam Carrell, executive director for Water Works Park Foundation, says he's expecting between 6,000 and 8,000 people for the concert.

"[We're] very excited," Carrell said. "You know we've had Willie planned here a couple other times and for various reasons he hasn't been able to get here. So, third's time a charm...we're excited about it."

It's a huge turnout for a venue that was hit by the pandemic just one year after opening.

Wednesday will mark four years since the amphitheater hosted its first concert in 2019.

This year will measure the growth and development of the relatively new space.

"This is actually going to be our first full season where we can have both our paid concerts, our free cultural concerts and all the other activities that take place here all in one season," Carrell said.

With big names like Willie Nelson coming to town, he's optimistic about the success of the relatively new venue.

"It looks like it's going to be a great summer. The numbers look really good," Carrell said.

Lauridsen Amphitheater will host a total of twelve paid concerts this season. Young the Giant with Milky Chance and Talk will perform on June 28. Koe Wetzel with Pecos and the Rooftops and Dylan Wheeler will take the stage on June 30.

Country Legend Willie Nelson is Headed Back to Iowa This Summer

I don't know if anything will ever stop Willie Nelson from going on tour! The 90-year-old country icon is headed back to Iowa this summer, less than a year after his last visit.

According to a new article from the Des Moines Register , Willie Nelson will bring his  Willie Nelson & Family Tour to the Lauridsen Amphitheatre at Water Works Park in Des Moines on Saturday, May 25th at 7 p.m. Willie brought his tour to the Lauridsen Amphitheatre last June, and he also played the McGrath Amphitheatre in Cedar Rapids last May.

Willie Nelson has been making music for more than 80 years! He wrote his first song at age 7 and joined his first band at age 10. He recorded his very first album in 1962 and, according to Wikipedia , his discography includes "100 studio albums (consisting of 74 solo studio albums and 26 collaborative studio albums), 14 live albums, 51 compilation albums and 41 video albums as well as the soundtracks of The Electric Horseman and Honeysuckle Rose."  His latest album  Bluegrass   was released in September of 2023, which is nominated for Best Bluegrass Album at the upcoming Grammy Awards. He was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year!

D ES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines Water Works Park announced on Thursday that summer 2024 will be another jam packed season with concerts and events.

Field Daze Music Series

The Field Daze Music Series returns with country artists, rock bands, and more. So far, Field Daze has announced six acts performing at the Lauridsen Amphitheater, but more acts are expected to be announced soon. You can buy tickets on the Field Daze Music website .

Back for a third season the Biergarten is expected to open in late-May. Visitors will be able to support local breweries Wednesday through Sunday from 12 to 8 p.m.

Also returning with the Biergarten is the Local Bands, Brews, and Bikes concert series. The free concert series is on Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Country legend Willie Nelson plans Des Moines tour stop

Willie Nelson's on the road to Des Moines again — and he's bringing a cast of country favorites with him. 

The American music legend announced Monday a stop at Wells Fargo Arena, planned for April 11. Tickets — which cost cost $149.50, $129.50, $98.50, $83.50, $63.50 or $49.50 — go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. via Hy-VeeTix.com , at the Wells Fargo Arena ticketing office (233 Center St.), by phone at 844-55-HYVEE or at participating Des Moines area or Ames Hy-Vee locations. 

Dwight Yoakam, Robert Earl Keen and Brandy Clark plan to join Nelson at the show. 

The performance is the second announced Iowa date for Nelson this spring, with an April 13 show booked the Five Flags Center in Dubuque.

Nelson last appeared in the arena in August 2016 for a headlining performance at Hinterland Music Festival . He performed in Des Moines in 2013, a gig at the Des Moines Civic Center. 

A Kennedy Center honoree and recipient of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, Nelson's 70-plus studio album discography is highlighted by iconic numbers such as "On The Road Again," "Whiskey River," Waylon Jennings collaboration "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" and many more. 

The announcement comes as Nelson, age 84, canceled a number of scheduled February  shows to "completely recover" from a case of the flu, his team said in a release. 

Nelson released his latest studio album, "God's Problem Child," last April.
