While the iconic doll has had her fair share of animated films for at-home viewing, this will be the first time a live-action adaptation will make its way into theaters. Starring Robbie and Gosling as the film’s main Barbie and Ken, respectively, the storyline follows Barbie after she’s been booted from Barbieland, given no choice but to make it in the real world. Boasting a star-studded cast, the film will also feature performances by Simu Liu , Kate McKinnon , John Cena , Dua Lipa , Issa Rae , Rhea Perlman , Will Ferrell , Kingsley Ben-Adir , Michael Cera , and so many more. The third feature from Gerwig, Barbie follows the director’s successful and Academy Award-nominated films, Lady Bird and Little Women .

New York City's Museum of Arts and Design Presents Barbie®: A Cultural Icon

Major Exhibition Explores Barbie’s History and Impact on Fashion and Popular Culture

October 19, 2024–March 16, 2025

barbie tour new york

New York, NY (May 7, 2024)

NEW YORK, NY (MAY 7, 2024) —This fall, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) presents Barbie ® : A Cultural Icon , in collaboration with Illusion Projects and Mattel, Inc., a leading global toy and family entertainment company and owner of one of the most iconic brand portfolios in the world. The major exhibition first debuted in 2021, welcoming thousands of visitors in both Phoenix and Las Vegas. Barbie ® : A Cultural Icon marks its exclusive East Coast engagement at MAD, celebrating the 65th Anniversary of Barbie.

On view from October 19–March 16, 2025, the exhibition charts the 65-year history of Barbie and the doll’s global impact on fashion and popular culture through an expansive display of more than 250 vintage dolls, life-size fashion designs, advertisements and other ephemera, exclusive video interviews with the doll’s designers, and narrative sections that highlight the style trends, careers, and identities that Barbie has embodied and popularized over the decades.

“We are tickled ‘pink’ to welcome Barbie to the MAD this fall,” said Tim Rodgers, Nanette L. Laitman Director, Museum of Arts and Design. “The Museum has long been interested in the cultural impact of art and design in all spheres, including pop culture. More than simply a toy for make-believe and role play, Barbie has responded to and reflected nearly every significant social advancement over the last six decades.”

Inspired by the brand’s influence on culture, visitors to the exhibition will trace Barbie’s evolution from a child’s toy to a global icon across six distinct sections. The opening section relays the Barbie origin story and presents all 22 original ensemble outfits, while subsequent areas consider the influence of the Space Age; the creation of Christie, the first Black doll; the arrival of Ken; and the creation of the Barbie Dreamhouse™.

Visitors will also see Barbie in the iconic fashions of the 1970s, including Groovy Style, beachwear, and disco-themed designs, while sections on the 1980s and 1990s present a selection of diverse Barbie dolls representing a range of ethnicities, body types, and careers, including a feature on the first Black Barbie. The exhibition culminates in the 2000s, spotlighting the continued diversification of characters within the Barbie universe and connecting them to contemporary fashion trends, perspectives, and identities.

The exhibition, curated by Karan Feder and drawn from the private collection of David Porcello and Mattel, also features more than 50 historical objects and five unique photo opportunities, including a life-size Barbie Mirror-Pink Corvette with which visitors can interact. The exhibit will also showcase the Barbie Signature 65th Blue Sapphire Anniversary Fashion Dolls, paying homage to the iconic history and legacy of Barbie.

“We’re delighted to announce the opening of Barbie: A Cultural Icon at Museum of Arts and Design as we celebrate the 65th Anniversary of Barbie,” said Julie Freeland, Vice President of Global Location Based Entertainment, Mattel. “Barbie is a brand that has evolved through generations, and we can't wait for fans of all ages to take a journey through time with us in New York City.”

The exhibition at MAD will be augmented with related special events, a series of public programs, and a selection of official merchandise on sale at The Store at MAD. For updates and information, visit madmuseum.org and subscribe to the Museum’s monthly newsletter.

Sneak Peek: See Inside the 'Immersive' Barbie Experience Touring North America Starting This Summer

“World of Barbie” debuts in Toronto this July and will stop in New York, Chicago, Dallas and other cities

barbie tour new york

Visiting Barbie's Dreamhouse is now a reality!

Barbie fans of all ages will be able to walk into a human-size version of her imaginative world at "World of Barbie," an immersive experience that celebrates everything the iconic doll's universe has to offer. Entertainment company Kilburn Live partnered with Mattel to bring Barbie's neighborhood to cities across North America as part of a tour that kicks off this summer in Toronto. The attraction will stop in New York, Chicago and Dallas with more to come.

"World of Barbie," created by entertainment company Kilburn Live and Mattel , kicks off this summer in Toronto before touring around North America, and will allow fans to walk down Barbie's neighborhood streets. Visitors can explore several immersive play sets, including a life-size version of Barbie's bubblegum pink camper van. The vehicle even includes a hammock to lounge on, bringing a signature feature of the toy campers to life.

Other event highlights include strutting down the pink carpet, which features a row of six giant doll boxes with themes like "Western" and "Fashionista" that guests can climb into to snap a photo.

The real show-stopper is Barbie's iconic dreamhouse. According to Mark Manuel, CEO of Kilburn Live, the life-size house will transport guests to Malibu.

Not only can visitors sit in Barbie's modern living room and kitchen, but they can also play outside on a patio complete with a fake pool. And, of course, fans can walk into Barbie's closet, full of her different career-themed clothing and outfits inclusive of her style over the years.

What makes "World of Barbie" stand out is that the experience is meant to be enjoyed across generations, says Manuel: "Stepping into Barbie's real life dreamhouse, being transported to Malibu, sitting down in her camper van…there's no age limit to that."

There's also an element of nostalgia in Barbie's real-life neighborhood for grown-up fans. "You also have an older generation who's going to walk through and be brought back to their childhood days," he adds.

"World of Barbie" even includes a museum that chronicles Barbie's development over the decades. Julie Freeland, Senior Director of Location-Based Entertainment at Mattel, says that part of the attraction really plays into the universal connection fans have with Barbie.

"I travel all over the world, and people have their own stories of the favorite dreamhouse they had when they were a kid or their favorite doll that they grew up with. And they pass that on to their kids," she tells PEOPLE.

Barbie's neighborhood also includes multiple play sets that are career driven — from a TV studio to a space center and fashion studio. There's even a hands-on science lab where visitors can perform experiments. The purpose of the play sets isn't just purely fun. They're meant to help young kids explore and cultivate their interests.

"Barbie has had so many firsts, and has had so many different careers," Freeland said. "We hope that they leave truly feeling inspired and feeling like [they] can do anything."

"World of Barbie" kicks off in Toronto this summer before touring U.S. cities. Visit theworldofbarbie.com for more information.

How to get tickets to AQUA's Barbie World Tour in New York

The iconic band is performing at Hammerstein Ballroom this winter.

Anna Rahmanan

Given the current focus on all things Barbie, it was only a matter of time this happened: iconic Danish dance-pop band AQUA is bringing its Barbie World Tour to New York on December 9.

Kicking off in Seattle on November 12, the cross-country shows will be replete with the sorts of themes and images that defined AQUA's rise to success since its debut on the music scene back in 1997.

After all, who can forget the band's very first album, Aquarium ? The collection, which featured hits like "Barbie Girl," "Turn Back Time" and "Doctor Jones," among others, was followed two more studio albums: Aquarius , released in 2000, and Megalomania , which debuted in 2011.

That is all to say: the concert will clearly play to feelings of nostalgia, which happen to be one of the best emotions to experience while at a live music act.

Here is all you need to know about snagging tickets to the upcoming AQUA show in New York, featuring vocalists René Dif and Lene Nystrøm, keyboardist Søren Rasted and guitarist Claus Norreen.

When is the AQUA Barbie World Tour 2023 NYC?

AQUA will make a stop in New York on Saturday, December 9 at 8pm EST. Keep in mind that, for now, it's the only show scheduled in the area.

What venue is the tour being held at in NYC?

The AQUA Barbie World Tour will take over Hammerstein Ballroom, the 12,000-square-foot ballroom inside the Manhattan Center at 311 West 34th Street in midtown Manhattan, this winter.

How to get tickets for the AQUA Barbie World Tour 2023 NYC

Tickets for the Hammerstein Ballroom stop of AQUA's Barbie World Tour will be available on Ticketmaster starting October 13 at 10am EST. According to an official press release, each pass will cost $68 plus applicable fees.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

The highly anticipated premiere of the Barbie movie is almost upon us, and the whirlwind of publicity and marketing surrounding the film is spreading like wildfire. To get everyone even more excited, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling announced their plans to visit a number of countries, including the United States and Mexico, for promotional activities related to the movie. Barbie and Ken go global

Through a video shared on official social media accounts, the actors revealed their intention to embark on a tour across eight of the world’s most significant cities. This exciting journey will take them through Canada, Mexico City, New York, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, and Seoul.

As we enter July, the tour has begun and the timing of it aligns perfectly with the scheduled release of the expected blockbuster, which as well as starring Robbie is also produced by her, from July 20. The anticipation is palpable, and fans eagerly await the chance to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars promoting this exciting Barbie adventure.

Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ have generated immense interest and both movies are set to grace the big screen within a mere day of each other. Greta Gerwig earned Academy Award nominations in 2018 for Best Directing and Best Original Screenplay for her film ‘Lady Bird’. She also directed the captivating adaptation of ‘Little Women’, featuring the talents of Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan.

Now, turning our attention to the star-studded cast of Barbie, it boasts an enviable ensemble. As well as A-listers Robbie and Gosling, there are also roles for Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Helen Mirren, Dua Lipa, Emma Mackey, Kate McKinnon and Nicola Coughlan, adding to the film’s allure even for those of more advanced years.

Why has Barbie been banned in Vietnam?

You may have heard that the new movie has been banned in Vietnam, and wondering why a kids-focused adventure could have caused this reaction. Well, the answer lies in the detail of a map.

In one of the scenes a very child-like map is shown which includes the South China Sea and what is known as the “nine dash line” which is disputed in Vietnam. The following news clip explains more.

What’s the Barbie music playlist?

And as if the cast and direction weren’t enticing enough, the film’s soundtrack is set to be a standout feature in its own right. Boasting an eclectic mix of musical talents, including Dua Lipa, Karol G, Lizzo, Fifty Fifty, and even Gosling himself, the film’s soundtrack is destined to captivate audiences and is worthy of gracing any esteemed festival. Check it out!

Will the latest version get you happily going along with the younger members of your family???

Barbie(TM): The World Tour

Author margot robbie and andrew mukamal, photographs by craig mcdean, foreword by edward enninful, introduction by margaret zhang, afterword by greta gerwig, from an idea by fabien baron.

For the press tour following the record-breaking release of Greta Gerwig’s award-winning, acclaimed Barbie movie, producer and star Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal immersed themselves in some of Barbie’s most iconic outfits and curated vintage pieces, then approached designers, from Giorgio Armani to Donatella Versace, to create looks inspired by the doll-size originals. Many of these looks were not seen as the official Barbie press tour was cut short—so Margot and Andrew worked with renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean to shoot her in the looks exactly as they were curated: Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Steamline luggage at the airport, and beyond.   Accompanying McDean’s sumptuous photography are original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel’s Barbie fashion archives, and the designers’ sketches and Polaroids from fittings, layered into evocative collages by Fabien Baron, who conceived and produced the shoots and art-directed the book. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, as well as handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks (from Olivier Rousteing and Michelle Ochs to Manolo Blahnik and Jeremy Scott), this unique book blends the serious chic of high fashion with the serious fun of Barbie world—the dolls, the history, and the style that have captured imaginations for 65 years. A new book charts all the colourful looks worn by Margot Robbie on the Barbie press tour

In one of the most literal and dedicated forms of ' Method Dressing ' we've ever seen, Robbie's red-carpet looks throughout Barbie 's promotion – from pink Valentino polka-dots to playful gingham Prada ensembles – were inspired by outfits worn by the doll herself, expertly re-created by top designers with the help of Robbie's stylist, Andrew Mukamal. Now, a new book, Barbie: The World Tour , pays homage to this epic feat of life imitating art, with photographs by Craig McDean charting all of Robbie's Barbie-coded outfits.

Accompanying McDean's sumptuous photography are images of original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel's Barbie fashion archives, and the designers' sketches and Polaroids from fittings. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, as well as handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks, the book is a unique look behind the curtain at one of the most iconic tourdrobes in recent memory.

"The work that Andrew did in bringing all these elements together – the history of Barbie, the research he did through the Mattel archives, bringing in designers who had a childhood connection with Barbie or found inspiration in her for their later careers, or even just sensing what the world in general was getting excited about and trying to create moments for them – it was amazing, and it felt like that should all be celebrated," writes Robbie.

Here, we delve into our favourite photographs from the book. 'Barbie: The World Tour' by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal (Rizzoli New York, 2024) is out now.

"It wasn’t just looking into the history of Barbie and the history of Mattel but also going into the knowledge that I had already accumulated just through work and interest in these different fashion houses and understanding their signatures, their codes, the things they’re most famous for," writes Mukamal in the book, of finding the designers – and the outfits – for Robbie.

Margot Robbie as 'Day to Night' Barbie in Versace

barbie world tour

Robbie wore this look, designed by Donatella Versace, to the Barbie premiere in Seoul. Featuring a pink and white skirt suit with a matching boater hat, pointed pumps, a mini bag and a glittery pink phone, it's one of the most famous from the whole tour.

Sketches by Donatella Versace

"My first memory of Barbie was seeing her iconic blonde hair and understanding she was a powerful woman who could be anything. A total inspiration!" wrote Donatella Versace on one of her inspiration sketches for Robbie's 'Day to Night' Barbie outfit. Also pictured is a sketch of the second look Robbie wore to the Seoul premiere, which featured a shimmering bodice and tulle skirt – also based on one of the doll's original designs.

A sketch by Andreas Kronthaler

text, letter

"Without Barbie, I would not be a fashion designer," reads a note by designer Andreas Kronthaler, affixed to a sketch for the Vivienne Westwood dress Robbie wore to the European Barbie premiere, held in London. On the night, Robbie wore a couture gown modelled on the 'Enchanted Evening' doll from 1990, which was made from blush satin and embroidered white tulle, which she accessorised with ivory opera gloves, a pearl choker and a rose brooch.

Margot Robbie in Chanel

The Barbie tour was actually cut short due to the SAG-AFTRA strike , meaning not every look made it onto the red carpet. All were photographed, however – meaning this is one of the first looks at Robbie in a Barbie-inspired Chanel jacket and skirt.

Margot Robbie as 'Cherry Pie Picnic' Barbie in Bottega Veneta

a person sitting in a chair

Mukamal's inspiration for this look was the 'Cherry Pie Picnic' Barbie from 2015, and featured turn-up jeans by Bottega Veneta, a red belt and a tie-up floral shirt, along with Manolo Blahnik mules. "For an early morning talk show, we loved the idea of wearing Matthieu Blazy’s version of 'Cherry Pie Picnic' for Bottega Veneta: something surprising, our only denim look of the tour and a step away from pink," writes Mukamal in the book.

Why is the barbie dream house going on tour.

The Barbie dream house will provide a sense of nostalgia for fans who grew up with the playset and will bring back memories of their childhood, the CEO of Kilburn Live, Mark Manuel told People .

For younger Barbie fans, Manuel said this is an opportunity for people of all ages to immerse themselves in Barbie's world.

"Stepping into Barbie's real-life dream house, being transported to Malibu, sitting down in her camper van…there's no age limit to that," Manuel said.

"You also have an older generation who's going to walk through and be brought back to their childhood days," he added.

Barbie's dream house came during a time when women didn't have many rights but promoted a doll who had a career and her own home.

“Throughout her history and numerous careers, Barbie has represented a world of limitless potential,” Julie Freeland, Senior Director of Location Based Entertainment at Mattel said in a press release to the US Sun.

“With this exquisitely designed attraction, we were intentional about delivering an exciting experience that would leave younger fans with the sense that they could do anything or be anything.

"And, for those who grew up with Barbie, we wanted to spark a little bit of nostalgia, give these fans a chance to step back, re-invent themselves, if only for an afternoon, and spend a day in the Dream Life!”

Missy Elliott, Pop World Builder, Brings a Hip-Hop Fantasia to Brooklyn

For her first headlining tour in an innovative three-decade career, Elliott unleashed a relentless and exhilarating display of theatrical and visual ambition.

A woman in a sparkly multicolor suit that looks like a superhero costume, complete with a helmet and shades and a big letter M on her belt.

By Jon Caramanica

It’s nearly impossible to fathom that until this summer, almost three decades into her career, Missy Elliott had never headlined an arena tour. One of the most influential hip-hop and pop performers, songwriters and producers of all time, she built a career on hyperreal imagery and music that suggested an intergalactic, quirky, sensual future that even now feels fanciful and far-off.

And judging by the performance Elliott, 53, delivered at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Monday night, it would have been impossible to ascertain that she’d never toured at this level before. The deftness and imagination on display suggested a performer with a hyperdeveloped sense of image-making, a bone-deep understanding of her catalog, and a desire to make up for lost time and opportunity.

The tour, titled Out of This World — the Missy Elliott Experience, was a taut, relentless and exhilarating 75 minutes full of theatrical and visual ambition. At times, it had the complexity and density of recent peak pop spectacles, like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, or the Weeknd’s 2021 Super Bowl halftime show . But it was also kin to the films of Baz Luhrmann, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics — events in which precision, creativity and absurdism comfortably coexist, and actually rely upon each other.

The show was less a conventional concert than a dynamic carnivalesque D.J. set of strung-together Elliott smashes (her own, mainly, but at one point late in the night, some which she wrote or produced for others, like Aaliyah). It presented as one grand adventure — the front-loaded section of hits like “Sock It 2 Me,” “I’m Really Hot” and “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” (which was preceded by a quizzical nod to “Singin’ in the Rain”) wasn’t much more distinctive than the mid-show run of sex romps “Get Ur Freak On,” “One Minute Man” and “Hot Boyz.” And neither of those sections was more commanding than the sometimes choppy closing run, peppered with laser-beam bouncers like “Work It” and “Lose Control.” The less effective songs sprinkled throughout worked as accent pieces, but also at times undermined the potency of her biggest hits.

But Elliott was trying to make a point: Like all the most memorable and durable pop heroes, she has built a worldview much bigger than any one of her songs.

What was perhaps most striking, though, was how that world didn’t always require Elliott’s presence. During this show, there were countless things to keep an eye on — platforms popping up from the stage and flying out over the crowd; circular screens hovering over the audience; a video backdrop filled with colorful, surreally animated clips; fire spouting out of either side of the stage; dancers in ferocious lock step; and a small cast of sidekick characters doing light skit work.

Elliott was there, too, decked out in phenomenally inventive, flamboyant and dynamic outfits — a graffiti-covered puffer parka, fully rhinestoned track suits, a black exoskeleton-like jacket trailed by, essentially, a billowing cape-cum-cocoon that was inflated and trailed behind her for several feet. That was a nod to the outfit that made her famous — the interstellar trash bag chic she showed off in the video for her 1997 breakout single, “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly).”

When she smiled, which was often, it was electric. But often all you could see of her was the space between her nose and neck, like a person who doesn’t quite wish to be perceived. She rarely appeared fully fixed on the stage, or even on the idea of performing itself — she performed few full songs front to back, instead relying on the immediacy of the chorus and the familiarity of the opening words to trigger a communal response, and then easing back into the ensemble. She was the star, but maybe more important, she was the creative director. When she stepped offstage for a costume change, the show did not take a breather.

Around 20 dancers in ruthlessly choreographed routines did the bulk of the visual work, making for a spectacle that was part Busby Berkeley, part “Star Wars” trilogy, rendered through an artificial intelligence reimagining of “Wild Style.”

And it was notably loud, too, meaning there was less pressure on Elliott’s rapping and singing. Those were just small parts of a bombastic, meticulously produced soundtrack to a novel visual fantasia. It was also a reminder that Elliott in her prime was less a pure vocal hero than a rhythmic genius, a technophilic visual wizard, an imagineer of futuristic Black pop.

She made an argument here that she was also building a tent — late in the night she was joined onstage by her longtime collaborator Timbaland and the R&B technician Ciara, the night’s first two openers, and also Lil’ Kim, a fellow female hip-hop hero of the ’90s. There was also Busta Rhymes, the main support act, who in his prime was hip-hop’s premier eccentric and a sometime Elliott collaborator. He seemed extremely at home amid the pandemonium — his visual accompaniment was as antic as Elliott’s — and he brought out LL Cool J for a rowdy and meaningful performance of their verses on the seminal remix of Craig Mack’s “Flava in Ya Ear.”

In Elliott’s music and her often flabbergasting, decades-ahead visual presentation, she laid out threads that would later be picked up on by Kanye West, M.I.A., Drake, Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott and many others. The scale of her impact — she was the first female rapper inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame — belies the actual length of her commercial peak. Elliott’s time in the limelight was curiously short — her most meaningful hits appeared during a five-year stretch, from 1997 to 2002. And since then, Elliott has gone long periods without being much seen or heard from.

She appeared grateful for the opportunity to bask in the adoration from an audience that had waited decades to hail her. She returned briefly onstage after the house lights came up to soak it in without the barriers of costume and sound.

It was hard not to engage in a dash of sliding-doors speculation. Had a show like this gone on the road two decades ago, it would have instantly recalibrated what hip-hop extravaganzas could be in a live setting. It would have not only bolstered Elliott’s claim to the innovator throne, but possibly created a pathway for her career to develop even beyond the already substantive level of influence she achieved. Elliott peaked early, and then left the pieces behind for others to pick up and iterate on. Imagine instead Elliott cartoons, films, theme parks, energy drinks. Would we — even more than we currently do — simply live in a world of Elliott’s imagination?

On Friday, Aug. 2, pop superstar Mariah Carey announced she’s heading out on her annual Christmas tour starting in early November.

This year’s iteration, which she’s dubbed ‘The Christmas Time Tour,’ includes a trio of New York and New Jersey stops.

First up, the “Shake It Off” singer will drop into Newark, NJ’s Prudential Center on Friday, Dec. 13. After that, she’ll belt to the rafters at Belmont Park, NY’s UBS Arena on Sunday, Dec. 15 and Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

According to Carey’s Instagram , this 20-concert trek will be her “biggest holiday tour to date” in celebration of the 30th anniversary of her “Merry Christmas” album which features the stone-cold holiday classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

That’s not all, though.

The 55-year-old songstress also has 13 ‘Celebration of Mimi Live in Las Vegas’ residency concerts at the Dolby Theater at Park MGM from now until January 2025.

At those shows, Carey will skip the Christmas classics and perform tracks from her chart-topping 2005 album “The Emancipation of Mimi” which included chart-topping hits like “Shake It Off,” “It’s Like That” and “We Belong Together.”

If these sound like the shows for you, tickets are available as soon as today.

Fans can purchase Mariah Carey tickets for all upcoming shows on sites like Vivid Seats ; the official on-sale for ‘The Christmas Time Tour’ is Friday, Aug. 9.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Chef Becky Brown holds up dishes in Malibu Barbie Cafe.

How ‘Chopped’ Champion Becky Brown Became the Malibu Barbie Cafe Chef

Share All sharing options for: How ‘Chopped’ Champion Becky Brown Became the Malibu Barbie Cafe Chef

Chopped Champion Becky Brown grew up in Los Angeles, playing with Barbie dolls outfitted in custom clothes. Never did she think she would be cooking for Barbie fans around the country, but that opportunity presented itself this year with the advent of the Malibu Barbie Cafe .

Following the release of the 2023 Barbie film and the ensuing explosion of Barbie Core in cities around America, Mattel , the global toy and entertainment company that owns the Barbie brand, teamed up with media experiences company and platform Bucketlisters to launch the Malibu Barbie Cafe — an immersive traveling pop-up experience that channels Barbie and the Malibu beachside in the 1970s (the period when Malibu Barbie was first catapulted into the world). Knowing Brown’s cooking prowess and her Los Angeles history, Bucketlisters president Derek Berry tapped the chef to lead the experience. Since then, Brown, who won an episode of Chopped aired earlier this year (she also previously competed in MasterChef’s third season alongside Houston winner Christine Ha ), has traveled around the country, leading the launches of refreshingly pink Barbie-themed menus in cities like New York, Chicago, Miami, and Minneapolis’s Mall of America.

Now through mid-October, Houston is the latest pitstop.

Confetti pancakes served with dollops of whipped cream and a glittery cinnamon-sugar spread.

For Malibu Barbie Cafe, chef Becky Brown created a familiar menu made up of all fresh and homemade ingredients.

Brown kicked off the very pink experience at Washington Avenue’s Junction HTX earlier this week ahead of the official opening on Friday, August 16. Though Barbie is very much fictional (and plastic), the menu is anything but. Incorporating the iconic doll and her upbringing in Los Angeles as a theme, Brown has crafted bright, flavorful dishes that play on familiarity and channel “endless summer,” she says.

With a “farm-to-table” mindset, Brown’s fast-casual Barbie menu offers dishes made from a combination of homemade and fresh ingredients that don’t skimp on quality. There are West Coast Wave salads served with chickpea tahini and the option to add grilled chicken, bright pink beet hummus with fresh pita, and the very-L.A. vegan Cali-flower bowl made with roasted cauliflower, quinoa, scallions, and a tahini sauce. Cheesy smash burgers, served with freshly grilled onions and a secret sauce, are also on the menu for what Brown calls a “diner-esque” feel.

Meanwhile, brunch is equally festive, with pink confetti pancakes topped with whipped cream and a shimmering cinnamon-sugar, thick-cut maple bacon, and gooey grilled cheeses made up of gruyere, cheddar, and gouda cheeses, fig jam, and fresh fig as the cherry on top. Nyeri Stepanian, a manager at Bucketlisters, spearheads the bar menu — a flirty, fruity, and very pink line-up of cocktails like the Groovy Arnold Palmer, made with sweet tea vodka, peach, lemonade, and mint, and beach mojitos, a refreshing mix of rum, St. Germaine, lime, and mint (the cocktails also include chef touches like dried dragon fruit).

So far, Brown says Barbie fans have been “pretty chill” when it comes to the food. “There’s not a lot of critique,” she says of the super fans. Still, she’s been intent on giving them a solid experience. “I’ve had a lot of creative reigns to do something outside of the box,” she says.

Houstonians with a penchant for Barbie have already been flocking to the cafe in their best pink Barbie-inspired outfits, as seen during the cafe’s VIP preview events in the days leading up to the official opening. Diners indulged in bites and drinks, while also traversing through the Barbie-themed bar, which was outfitted with face painters, a rollerskating rink, and photo ops, including a life-sized Barbie box, a lifeguard chair, and beachy backdrops. The new cafe also sells memorabilia for souvenirs, including Barbie dolls and themed shirts.

Houston’s Malibu Barbie Cafe features plenty of photo ops, including a bright pink rollerskating rink and a cutesy lifesize Barbie box.

Michael Corrigan, a spokesperson for Bucketlisters, says there’s no telling where Malibu Barbie Cafe will end up next following its stop in Houston. Though some of the fanfare following Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film has died down, the love for Barbie seemingly has not. “All types of people see themselves in Barbie,” he says, adding that the success of the traveling pop-up has shown (no pun intended) that there’s no “shelf life” for Barbie-themed experiences. “The future,” he says, “continues to be bright.”

Tickets are available on the Bucketlisters app and website for $25 and include a food and merchandise credit. Diners can join Bucketlisters’s waitlist to be notified when tickets go on sale.
