Coors Brewery Tour

Coors Brewery Tour – Golden

The largest single brewery in the world, Coors Brewing Company, is located in downtown Golden. Tours and tastings are offered year-round and are open to guests of all ages as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Explore a live working factory where every phase of the beer-making process is observed. The tours cost a fee and are self-guided with headsets available. There are learning stations around with pre-recorded descriptions. Reservations are required for all guests.

Hailing from Prussia, Adolph Coors, and Jacob Schueler established the brewery in Golden in 1873. The mountain on the Coors can is based on a Rocky Mountain peak in southwest Colorado.

Touring the Coors Brewery in Golden

There are two types of tours: self-guided (year-long) and guided tours (seasonally). The traditional 30-minute self-guided tour has educational stations and individual headsets. You get to enjoy a complimentary sample and three 10 oz beers afterward. During slower months, a live tour is given and they run for about 30 minutes.

You can also go on the Sampling-only tour where you go straight to the tasting room and try three complimentary beers. This is often what the locals do and you are free to partake in this tour daily. Enjoy some of Coors’s classic, seasonal, and even test-market beers. The whole operation lasts 1 – 1.5 hours including the shuttle, tour, and beer tastings. Drinking time may vary.

Getting There

Parking for the tour is located at 13th and Ford Streets, one block from the brewery. A free shuttle takes you downtown to the Coors factory and the driver usually tells you about the city of Golden on the way.

Tours and imbibing at the bar get busy during peak season, so plan weekdays and off-peak times when possible.

Coors Brewery Tour in Golden, Colorado

coors brewery tour Golden Colorado

I don’t drink, but we are fascinated with factory tours so we couldn’t miss the chance to take a free tour of the Coors Brewery during our recent trip to Denver. The Coors Brewery is located in Golden, Colorado which is just a short 20-30 minute drive outside of Denver. Interestingly, the Coors Brewery is the largest single site brewery in the world. This means they malt their own barley, brew and package all in one place. The tour consists of seeing all the different processes and stages that beer goes through. Halfway through the tour they offer a fresh beer sample (about 2 ounces) and let you cool off in a refrigerated room (I guess it can get warm in the summer time).

The real prize however is at the end of the tour where you are given three pretty good-sized samples of any of their brands. They recommend you try something different, not just your favorite. For us non-drinkers we were allowed all the soft drinks you can handle. Which, let’s be honest, that was like heaven for us.

I did overhear that they offer a “short tour” for those who basically want to skip the tour and head straight to the sample room. I also overheard one guy say he has done the tour like ten times. Which makes sense- free beer? Why not- if I was local I’d be there too, just for the pepsi.

Things To Do

Restaurants, food and drink, restaurants, food and drink | colorado native ac golden brewing will cease operations this fall, the news comes as parent company molson coors divests in the craft beer sector.

Molson Coors is planning to shut down the experimental beer arm AC Golden Brewing Co. , known for its line of Colorado Native beers that feature locally grown ingredients.

AC Golden will cease operations by the end of September, Molson Coors spokesperson Adam Collins confirmed to The Denver Post. The details, first reported by Brewbound , were explained in an email to wholesalers Tuesday sent from Michelle St. Jacques, Molson Coors’ chief commercial officer.

Founded in 2007, AC Golden was an effort from Molson Coors – then called MillerCoors – to compete with small-batch beer makers rising in popularity at that time. The company was nestled within the large production brewhouse in Golden with “the leeway to experiment with bold beers and, if necessary, fail without eating millions of dollars,” according to the Coors website.

The foundation of that effort was leaning into the company’s local heritage by creating beers made with Colorado-grown barley and hops. The Colorado Native amber lager debuted in 2010 and by 2014, AC Golden was earning accolades at the prestigious Great American Beer Festival competition. The Colorado Native brand has since grown to a year-round lineup of more than a dozen styles, and AC Golden produces other product lines such as Juicy IPAs and a German pilsner inspired by founder Adolph Coors’ homeland.

With Colorado Native, AC Golden single-handedly catalyzed an entire hop-growing industry in Colorado . About a decade later, however, many of the brewery’s farmers were out of business because it had amassed a backlog of the crop. Still, Molson Coors touted that Colorado Native was “thriving” in 2022 despite an overall downturn in the craft beer market accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company said it will discontinue brewing Colorado Native.

But it’s clear Molson Coors is now divesting even more widely in the craft sector. On Tuesday, Canadian cannabis company Tilray announced plans to purchase four craft brands from Molson Coors , effectively dissolving its Tenth & Blake craft subsidiary.

In her note to wholesalers, St. Jacques said that the sale of the craft brands “frees up resources to focus our people, time and money behind the initiatives we believe will best help us meaningfully grow our U.S. above premium portfolio and build a scale business with beyond beer in the U.S.”

That includes Blue Moon, Blue Moon Light, non-alcoholic Blue Moon, and ZOA Energy drink, she added.
