Best things to do and see in Bratislava

Bratislava , capital of Slovakia, is the most important city in the country, being the reference both economically and politically. The city is located very close to the border with Austria and Hungary, following the route of the Danube and surrounded by the Little Carpathians. Lush forests are added to this landscape where you can go hiking while enjoying nature. The old town (historical center) dates from the XVVIII century and is limited to pedestrians, so it is very pleasant to walk through its streets as well as to have a drink on the terraces of bars and restaurants. If you do not want to waste your time looking for the points of interest that are worth visiting, we advise you to do a free walking tour in Bratislava with an official local guru who will show you the essential places of the city. One of the sites that is usually the favorite of travelers is the Castles rebuilt on the hill (Bratislavský Hrad) with spectacular views over the old town itself, as well as the Danube route through the city. Another place that is very close to the imposing river, is Devín Castle, as well as visiting St. Martin's Cathedral, Most SNP Bridge (UFO Bridge), Grassalkovich Palace where the president of the country resides, the Church of Santa Isabel , outside the historic center, the Slovak National Museum where you can soak up the local culture, as well as the Primate Palace that houses one of the city's main auditoriums. Another place that you must include in your route is the UFO Observation Deck viewpoint from which you can have a view of the Danube river, in addition to the rest of the city. It is usually one of the points that stand out in their opinions the walkers who have made a free tour in Bratislava in GuruWalk . In the end, the panoramic views offered by the city are one of the best summaries that you can take with you during your visit. After your visit, if you still want to know the world, cities like Zurich, Nuremberg or Cologne also have guided tours.

What makes Bratislava so delightful?

Although Bratislava is not as popular with tourists as other cities in the region: Vienna, Krakow or Prague, you can find some really great attractions here. Bratislava impresses with its historical monuments, tranquility and greenery, and is not as crowded with tourists as Vienna or Budapest, allowing you to fully enjoy its charms. If you are planning a trip to the Slovak capital, join our free tour and learn about the city’s history from the Middle Ages to the present day. Discover the most magnificent monuments, charming places and attractions that you will long remember. Enjoy an unforgettable free tour of Bratislava with a local, passionate guide!

Bratislava – what to see during the tour?

The sightseeing tour should start with the city’s main square, Hlavné námestie, which is also Bratislava’s market square. The square is located in the Old Town, in the very center of the capital, and is surrounded by historical buildings such as the Art Nouveau Roland palace, the neo-Baroque Paluďaiov palace, the rococo Kutscherfeldov palace, the rococo Aponiho palace or the Miestodržiteľský palace. You will also find here the 16th-century Rolland Fountain, which owes its name to the legendary knight.

Lovers of historical buildings will be delighted with the ruins of medieval Devín Castle, located on a rock at the mouth of the Morava River into the Danube – it is one of the oldest castles in all of Slovakia. Also noteworthy is the Bratislava Castle dating from the 10th century, which served as a defensive fortress from the 15th century onwards. Today it houses the Historical Museum. The only surviving city gate in Bratislava is the Michalská Gate, which was built around 1300.

The most famous religious building in Bratislava is St Martin’s Cathedral, the former coronation church of the Hungarian kings. It is the most important church in the whole of Slovakia and its construction began back in the 14th century. Also worth a visit is the Church of St Elizabeth, known as the Blue Church, which stands out for its unusual shape and colour.

Another popular attraction in the city is the UFO, a space ship shaped restaurant located on the Slovak National Uprising Bridge. On its roof you will find a viewpoint (located at a height of 95 metres), from which you can admire, among other things, Bratislava Castle and the Old Town.

There are also quite a few interesting sculptures in Bratislava. The most famous of these is the statue of Čumil – the sewer man, which protrudes from a sewer manhole. Touching Čumil’s helmet is said to bring good luck, so it is no wonder that it is the most worn-out spot on the monument.

We had just one day in Wroclaw and a decision to join Walkative tours was the right one! These guys are amazing! Their stories are very informative, full of history, legends, funny jokes! They took us to all astonishing places of Wroclaw. Perfect for a day trip to this lovely city! Thank you, Lukasz and Matt for the brilliant tours!

Dawie’s tour was the best theatre in Paris as well as informative!!!! He is great – even in the rain. Do it.

My group really enjoyed the amount of history explained in the tour, it was a nice way to get a lot of information on several of the key sites in the center of Paris in a compact amount of time. Excellent for orientation and background. I would certainly do other tours in the future.

Free Bratislava Tours

Bratislava has joined the group of cities offering the ever more popular concept of Free Walking Tours in English. There are daily free tours taking place, no matter what weather there is. No need to book or order in advance, you just show up and enjoy the tour that usually lasts between two and three hours.

Let us first explain what a Free walking tour actually is. As the name already indicates, it is a tour that is mostly just walking and it has no fixed price, instead it is tip-based. Most people disapprove of paying for services/products before actually experiencing them first. That is how this concept was started. The magic behind it is, that it actually motivates the guide not to slack off, but to try as hard as possible to offer an excellent tour. And now to answer your question, as to why would there be an organised group of people doing free tours? Because it still is their job. They are often professional licensed guides, that have this as a side job or often it might be students who can work flexible times. One aspect that is crucial, is that the guides are locals and they often have spent years or all their lives in the particular city.

Bratislava is a perfectly sized city to walk around and the guides from Discover Bratislava have various different itineraries that cover most of the city. The original City & Castle Bratislava tour lasts around two and half hours (shorter in winter) and does a wonderful job of a general introduction to the history of Bratislava and Slovakia. It is not the standard boring history lesson, instead it is packed with fun facts, some surprising historical events and much more info that will hopefully make you remember Bratislava once you leave. You will cover the most important old-town venues and the Bratislava Castle hilltop as well. The free tours provide basic information about the culinary side of Slovakia and explain the basics of traditions and culture you can explore.

There are daily English tours happening both in the morning and afternoon, so whether you are coming just for a day or you are planning a multiple-day stay, you can simply choose one or more tours according to your schedule. In addition to the original free walking tour there is also a very factual Free 20th Century Tour and the unique Free Spooky Tour of Bratislava and when all 3 combined, they cover roughly 70% of the city’s touristic and local’s secret sites.

Free Spooky Tour of Bratislava

Bratislava’s old-town is a medieval heritage area and the area that we call Bratislava now, was inhabited already thousands of years ago. It has even been one of the Roman outposts for defending the Roman Empire. During the more recent periods of the history it has seen diseases, killers and other horrible events take place.

Starting just recently there is a new free walking tour in Bratislava, that covers these brutal and weird stories called the Free Spooky Tour. It is the only evening/night tour in Bratislava and had intensive research leading up to it. Currently there is a small group of professional licensed guides that run the tour. In this 1 hour tour you will hear about the world’s biggest female mass murderer, learn about the Bratislava witch-hunting and more. It is a short walking tour that covers a small, non-touristy part of the old-town and finishes in a bar area under the castle. You do not need to book or reserve the tour, just show up and make sure to dress accordingly to the weather and season. It is a tip-based tour so in the end you can contribute according to your liking. You can also explore other parts of Bratislava on the free spooky tour or the original free City & Castle tour.

Free 20th Century Tour

The 20th century is the most crucial century for our modern times. Bratislava and Slovakia went through some very sinister events during this time. They of course refer to the dictatorships during the 2nd world war and the cold war. Slovakia between 1939-1945 became a nazi state and between 1948 -1989 a socialist dictatorship. The country and its citizens suffered tremendously during both these periods and there are still numerous venues in Bratislava, that remind us of that past.

Starting 2018 there is a dedicated Free 20th Century Bratislava Tour , with professional licensed guides that covers both of these time periods. It is a three hour tip-based walking tour. You will be shown unique sites of the 20th century, such as the Slavin war monument, the upside-down pyramid, the most fairy-tale Blue Church and much more. Try to enjoy the tour and contemplate some really tragic stories from the holocaust or the political persecutions by the communist party. Most surprising for all is the fact that both the communists and the nazis had a lot in common and were very brutal in punishing their own citizens.

After these three hours of walking and taking a public bus, you will be able to reflect upon the past of Slovakia and compare it with your own country. You do not need to book or reserve in advance for this tour, just show up, dress accordingly to the weather and the time of year. This tour takes place in the afternoons and you can also check the schedule of other Discover Bratislava tours and see how it fits into the free time that you have. This free tour is not suitable for children and requires 1 Euro before the start for the public bus ticket, or you can bring your own 60-minute ticket.

About Me ☮️️‍🌍☕️🐶🚲

Let's get acquainted.

Hi there. My name is Sebastian . I work as a tour guide in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia . I’ve been living here for more than 17 years.

Bratislava is a beautiful city with a cozy historical center. I work in this center almost every day. People come to this capital from all over the world to experience a city of many contrasts. It borders two very different countries, has many old historical buildings, and copes with the brutality of socialist architecture - it’s Bratislava, too.

No wonder this beautiful place, next to the world-famous Vienna, went unnoticed for a long time. Today, many people have begun to discover and add it to their travel maps.

A perfect city experience always includes a good guide. And I, Sebastian, am more than just a guide. This profession is my passion , my dream job . I've worked in many places, but the office and routine work never felt right. I thrive on meeting people from different cultures, each one bringing a unique perspective to our journey . Every client, whether they confuse Slovakia and Slovenia or know the history of Europe by heart, is equally important to me. I can't wait to share the wonders of Bratislava with you.

Whether you belong to one group or another, you can be sure that I look forward to seeing you and will always welcome you on my tours. :)
