Itineraries

Brindisi, italy.

Known as the “Gateway to the East,” Brindisi is one of the largest cities in Italy’s Apulia region and one of the most active trading hubs in the country. Located on the Adriatic coast of Southern Italy, Brindisi will greet you with its crystal-clear waters and historic city views. After the bombings of World War II, the city spent many years rebuilding and now hosts a unique mix of historic and contemporary architecture, including churches and castles like Castello Alfonsino, the Church of Santa Maria del Casale, Santa Maria del Casale, and the Forte a Mare Castle. Beautiful beaches, like Lido Azzurro and Torre Guaceto, are also close by and will offer you a great place to relax.

Bordeaux (Pauillac), France

A destination for wine-lovers, food-lovers, and city ramblers, southern French city and wine region Bordeaux will offer you much more than only its famous red wine. With stunning classical, neo-classical, and urban architecture, historical monuments, incredible art museums, and a buzzing dining and drinking scene, this port city and UNESCO World Heritage site rivals the likes of Paris.

Kavala, Greece

Tucked into the northeastern coast of mainland Greece, just below the Bulgarian border, the hillside city of Kavala overlooks the Aegean Sea and is the main seaport of eastern Macedonia. Kavala will offer you a surprising mix of history, culture, and architecture—archeological sites, monuments, cobblestone streets, wooden balconies lined with flowers, colorful palaces, and hilltop fortresses—as well as diverse landscapes like lush wetlands, lagoons, inland lakes, beaches, and diverse flora and fauna.

Trieste, Italy

Old-World Trieste—a city that draws attention from travelers around the world—sits at a northeastern corner of Italy and brings together the Latin, Slavic, and Germanic cultures of the Adriatic Sea. The Roman and Byzantine empires ruled here once upon a time, and their influences can be seen in the different types of architecture of the cityscape. You can experience Trieste's many cultures through its cozy coffeehouses, seafood restaurants, open-air plazas, Old World churches, and museums.

Volos, Greece

Volos, Greece's newest port city, is located at the foot of Mount Pelion and the innermost point of the Pagasetic Gulf. As an important industrial center and bridge between Europe and Asia, this lively seafront destination offers you many things to discover—local cultural activities, museums, cafes, restaurants, and an exciting nightlife area. You will also enjoy its unique architecture, nearby lush mountain ranges, and golden beaches.

Find European Cruises

Mediterranean

Where cuisine and culture converge

Once home to ancient civilizations and famous philosophers, the Mediterranean continues to define tradition. Departing from Rome, Athens or Barcelona, sail into Marseille and bask in the beauty of Provence’s lavender fields. Explore Pompeii’s ruins while visiting Naples. Or taste cuisine as rich as the culture with fresh vegetables in Santorini and hand-thrown pizzas in Naples.

British Isles

Legendary tunes and storybook tales

On a European cruise to the British Isles, walk in the footsteps of royalty, like the kings, queens and musical empires before you. Travel along the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle, where bagpipes greet you. See the world’s oldest book, The Book of Kells, at Trinity College Library. Or walk along Abbey Road and visit the old stomping grounds of one of the world’s most famous boybands. With Princess, fortresses and musical memoirs await.

Scandinavia & Baltic

Viking history as deep as the fjords

Legendary tales come alive on a European cruise to Scandinavia. Explore Baltic heritage with an overnight visit to Stockholm, where you can visit the Royal Palace or sail the sparkling waterways of its 14 islands while learning about Sweden along the way. Walk Tallinn’s cobbled streets and admire the preserved medieval architecture from its 13th-century origins.

Norway & Iceland

Natural splendors abound

Natural attractions abound in Norway and Iceland, your gateway to dazzling fjords, cascading waterfalls and black-sand beaches. Navigate through Geiranger’s winding waterways to Seven Sisters Waterfall where currents rush 800 feet down the rugged cliffside. Or take a dip in the rejuvenating waters of the Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik. Admire Mother Nature’s masterpieces on some of our best European cruises.

Transatlantic

The best of land and sea

Indulge in a classic sailing experience and revel in life at sea as you travel across the Atlantic. While on board, luxuriate in the best that your ship has to offer — like the Princess Luxury Bed and cuisine made from scratch. Then explore ports from Iceland to Greece and cities between. Get to know the unique personalities of your ship and the destinations visited, only on a Transatlantic European cruise with Princess.

Cruisetours

More time to explore

European cruisetours combine our traditional cruises with four to eight nights on land exploring world-famous regions. As a part of your trip, enjoy expert guides, hotel stays and daily meals. Experience seamless transportation from land to ship before setting sail to the dream destinations on your itinerary. See Europe in a way that only Princess can show you.

European Cruise Departure Ports

  • London (Southampton)

Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amid Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lie in the park and throughout the entire city.

Copenhagen boasts equal parts charm and culture. Before you set sail on your European cruise, indulge in thrills at Tivoli Gardens, and ride a bike along Nyhavn’s waterways, passing multicolored homes on the way. Tour ancient fortresses, like Kronborg Castle, which inspired Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Or make a stop to see Copenhagen’s most famous symbol, The Little Mermaid.

From double-decker buses and telephone booths to medieval castles and monuments, experience the best of the city and countryside on a European cruise from Southampton. Ride on the London Eye, and watch The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Then head west and walk the hallways of Windsor Castle, or travel even further to learn about the mystery of Stonehenge.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a European cruise from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed a return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Why Cruise in Europe

With Princess, travel effortlessly through Mediterranean beaches, British Isles, Russian palaces and Norwegian fjords. On a European cruise, meet locals who call these destinations home, see world-famous landmarks and relive stories of the past.

Cruising vs Land Vacations

The value of vacation

Revel in first-class experiences without the first-class price tag. On a European cruise, unpack once and save on transportation and baggage fees as well as dining and entertainment costs. Independent land travel through Europe adds up fast — between accommodations, restaurants, train travel, taxis and more. But with Princess, you can spend more time exploring Europe and less time checking into your next hotel.

Experience Different Seasons of Europe

Sail into the season

See the many faces of the world with seasonal European cruise sailings from Princess. In the spring, shop France’s colorful outdoor markets for hand-crafted souvenirs. Frolic through Norway’s landscapes when they fully bloom in summer. Or visit Italy in the fall to taste the first wines of the season.

Sail Aboard Our Newest Ships

Your best-in-class travel companion

Built in Italy, our newest ships first set sail in international waters for their inaugural season. On a European cruise, you can be one of the first to travel aboard these vessels, adding a whole new level of excitement and opportunity to your trip. Plus these are the first ships designed with Princess® MedallionClass®, making them the best European cruises at sea.

See Famous Landmarks

Where history books come alive

Between the castles, towers and ruins, Europe is teeming with ancient architecture. On a European cruise, sail into Le Havre and choose to visit the beaches of Normandy or ascend the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Walk through the Colosseum in Rome, and stop by Livorno to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Or explore hidden gems — like Belfast’s Giant’s Causeway.

A Vacation for Every Generation

Adventures for all

In Europe, there are activities for all. With exciting tours through age-old cities, kids can see textbooks come to life and return with their own stories to tell. Parents can relish in romance and relaxation amidst fairytale landscapes, and grandparents can relive stories of memories past with their loved ones. Whether on board or ashore, find activities created with every type of guest in mind on a cruise to Europe.

Enjoy the Convenience of Cruising

Travel reimagined

See multiple international cities without the hassle of transportation or additional planning. Cruise from one destination to the next with world-class entertainment, fresh food and relaxing accommodations at your fingertips. When you return to the ship, continue your exploration with unique activities and global cuisine, or enjoy the familiar comforts of home with your favorite foods — all on our best European cruise ships.

European cruise excursions

From thrilling kayak voyages in Flåm to relaxing beach days in Mykonos, find shore excursions that match every guest’s preference with Princess. In Rome, taste local delicacies like wood-fired pizza, fine wines and homemade gelato. Walk past medieval buildings in Bergen, stopping by the Schøtstuene Museum on your way back. Or hike Mt. Fløien and revel in panoramic views of Norway’s woodlands, fjords and cityscapes.

Local connections

Don’t just cruise to Europe, experience it alongside those lucky enough to call it home. Our Local Connections program introduces you to each region with award-winning shore excursions. Enjoy a food and wine pairing in the home of a local Tuscan farmer. Capture snapshots of Glasgow’s breathtaking scenery with the help of a Scottish photographer. Or set out on a guided beer walk through Copenhagen.

More ashore

Dive even deeper into the flourishing cultures abroad with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays on select European cruise itineraries. Visit one of Dublin’s pubs and enjoy a night of Irish song, dance and Guinness. Go glamping in Alta and spend the night under the evening sky for a chance to see the Northern Lights. Or dance into the evening at a party in Mykonos — an island famous for its nightlife.

European Cruise Onboard Experience

Experience Europe right on board. Our onboard activities bring the diverse cultures of the region directly to you. Sing, dance, feast and celebrate in a way that only Europe — and Princess — knows how.

Accommodations

Your home away from home

Your stateroom is where you rest and recharge between adventures. That’s why every room is equipped with the expertly designed Princess Luxury Bed, 100% Jacquard-woven cotton linens and our SLEEP program created by a board-certified sleep expert. From interior cabins to full suites, unwind in any of our staterooms, and enjoy peace of mind with the option of connected rooms for families of four or more traveling together.

A sensory tour of Europe

From the spice of Moroccan tagine to the sweetness of Greek Baklava, Europe’s flavor profile is incredibly diverse. On board your European cruise, enjoy English favorites — like bangers and mash or shepherd’s pie — during a British-style pub lunch. Then head ashore to savor fresh ingredients and iconic dishes, including fresh Greek salads and Italian gelato. From ship to shore, taste the best of abroad with Princess.

Sip and savor

Home to some of the best vineyards in the world, Europe knows a thing or two about wine — and so does Princess. Visit Vines wine bar, one of the best-stocked cellars at sea, and sample an assortment of reds and whites. Unwind with a drink in hand at Crooners, a vintage Sinatra-era cocktail lounge. Or enjoy a glass from the comfort of your stateroom balcony while taking in views of Europe’s most inspiring shorelines.

Cultural Immersion

Dive even deeper

On a European cruise, explore destinations even at sea. Learn from local experts — like musicians, dancers, athletes and chefs — who come on board to show you the unique personality of each region. Or listen to stories from international crew members, many of whom call these lands home. Even kids can awaken their sense of wonder with our Youth and Teen Centers, created in partnership with Discovery™ and Animal Planet™.

Entertainment

Find your joy

Embark on adventures by day, and indulge in entertainment by night. Watch Movies Under the Stars® at our 300-square-foot outdoor theater. Attend original productions from Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz, composer of  Wicked . Or learn traditional moves, like Flamenco or Irish stepdance, and listen to popular music from the destinations on your itinerary. On a European cruise with Princess, the choice is yours.

Celebrations & Romance

Love blooms on The Love Boat

It's difficult to imagine something more romantic than sailing through the alluring cities and charming countryside of Europe. While on board your European cruise, we cater to your sentimental side with private dining on your balcony — like breakfast for two or a sunset dinner — honeymoon packages, flowers and chocolates delivered to your room and couples-only massages in the Sanctuary.

Cue the wanderlust: 10 dreamiest European river cruises

A cruise expert's top pick european river cruises..

Gina Kramer

Tauck to Expand U.S. Cruise Offerings in 2023

River cruising has taken me to some of the most spell-binding places I’ve ever visited in Europe. Storybook architecture, castles, and bucolic landscapes are sprinkled like pixie dust along the region’s waterways. You can walk right off your ship and find yourself in a fairytale.

Carrying only 100 to 200 passengers on average (some even less), river ships offer one of the most intimate styles of cruising. Their more inclusive pricing models complement easygoing, “explore at your own pace” itineraries—and most lines give you at least one free tour—making it all about the destination. Many European rivers also flow through multiple countries, so you can experience a wide range of scenery, cultures, and adventures in one trip.

SEE THE WORLD: Best companies for guided tours

I’ve combed through all the major river cruise lines’ itineraries to handpick the most wanderlust-worthy routes. Dream big with these 10 cruises that give you access to some of the most magical cities and small villages in Europe.

Note: Though often grouped together with river cruising, barge cruising is an entirely different ball game. Barge ships have much smaller passenger counts (think less than 10 passengers) and don’t include as many amenities as river ships. For this article, my focus will be river cruising.

1. Germany’s Rhine River Valley

White half-timbered houses with red trim nestled in a small village along a stream, with a castle on a hill in the background

River Cruise Line: AmaWaterways

Itinerary: Rhine and Moselle Fairytales

Using the Rhine River and its tributary, the Moselle, to reach more remote areas, AmaWaterways has curated the ultimate fairytale itinerary. Its Rhine and Moselle Fairytales cruise is peppered with some of the region’s most winsome villages. Half-timber houses, old stone bridges, and storied castles conjure up images of storybooks from childhood. The magic only grows as you head into Germany’s Black Forest and close to the Swiss Alps.

SAVOR AND SIP: Our top picks for European wine tours

2. Paris and the Seine River

view of Paris at dusk

River Cruise Line: A-Rosa

Itinerary: Seine Experience Normandy with Paris

Napoleon Bonaparte once said “Secrets travel fast in Paris.” The magic of a Seine River cruise is no secret, but the Seine Experience Normandy with Paris itinerary from “city-nature-gourmet-active-adventure-wellness-romance-family cruise” line A-Rosa holds some of its own. Each bridge tells a story, and every village you pass on your way to Normandy—including Les Andelys and Rouen—begs for you to get a little lost in its mystical alleyways. It’s no wonder so many famous artists documented life along the Seine in their work.

FRENCH HOLIDAY: These France tours really stand out

3. Portugal’s Douro River

Closeup of building with blue tiles comprising an intricate mural

River Cruise Line: Scenic

Itinerary: Delightful Douro with Lisbon

Portugal river cruises continue to grow in popularity, and for good reason: the Douro Valley is just as breathtaking as it is rich in ancient traditions. The Delightful Douro with Lisbon itinerary from ultra-luxury cruise line Scenic offers different ways to experience the region, with active, moderate, and relaxed options for its all-inclusive excursions. From Pinhao, with its traditional Portuguese tile murals, to Lisbon and Sintra, one of Europe’s most fabled, fairytale villages, this cruise is a feast for the senses.

4. The South of France

View of street in small town in provence, france with flowers in foreground

River Cruise Line: Emerald Cruises

Itinerary: Aix-en-Provence with Sensations of Lyon and Provence

Pastel facades and fields of lavender and poppies meld with Roman ruins and Medieval stone villages in the South of France. The Aix-en-Provence with Sensations of Lyon and Provence itinerary from Emerald Cruises serves up a memorable taste of all the region’s glory. Munch on some calissons (Provencal candies) while you wander at a slower pace. Keep your eyes peeled, and you’re bound to run into landscapes straight out of a Vincent Van Gogh painting.

5. The Netherlands and Belgium

Old drawbridge leading to a small brick village with trees in the background

River Cruise Line: Viking River Cruises

Itinerary: Tulips and Windmills

As the name of the itinerary implies, Tulips and Windmills from Viking River Cruises makes the most of the charms of Belgium and the Netherlands during the blooming season. Much of your time will be spent in Amsterdam, but the Dutch countryside has its fair share of storybook hamlets to relish, too. Highlights include the villages of Kinderdijk and Veere, as well as Enkhuizen, which even has its own fairytale-inspired attraction called Sprookjeswonderland.

6. German Christmas Markets

christmas market in, Munich germany at night

River Cruise Line: Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Itinerary: Classic Christmas Markets

It’s hard to match the magic of a European river cruise during Christmas time, when cities and towns are cozy and inviting with holiday markets. Uniworld sets itself apart from other lines with its Classic Christmas Markets cruise, with stops you typically don’t see. Wertheim, Kitzingen, and Rothenburg are local favorites for perusing handcrafted gifts with a hot mug of gluhwein in hand. These sought-after, storybook towns are all included on Uniworld’s itinerary.

HOLIDAY SPIRIT: Companies with the best European Christmas market tours

7. Loire Valley, France

Castle and bridge along a river at sunset

River Cruise Line: CroisiEurope Cruises

Itinerary: Loire River Cruise

Some say the Loire Valley is home to France’s most fairytale-like scenery. Hallmarked by its chateaus and castles, the region was even the inspiration for a real fairytale: “The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood,” by Charles Perrault. While some river cruise lines incorporate visits to the Loire Valley as supplemental packages, CroisiEurope is among only a few that have a ship specifically designed to sail the shallow Loire River. CroisiEurope’s Loire River cruises fully immerse you in the scenery that surrounds France’s last “wild river,” so you’ll never miss a view.

8. Oktoberfest in Germany

Oktoberfest, Munich. Waiter in traditional Bavarian costume

River Cruise Line: Tauck

Itinerary: Autumn Along the Rhine: Munich’s Oktoberfest

Fall foliage adds a splash of color to the Rhine’s storybook setting, where ancient castles, fortresses, and cathedrals collide. On the Autumn Along the Rhine: Munich’s Oktoberfest cruise from Tauck , passengers can savor it all—the scenery, the season, and the most authentic celebration of Oktoberfest. Tauck, which is known for its thoughtfully planned cultural experiences, makes this itinerary even more special with stops in France’s Alsace countryside and Switzerland’s enchanting Lucerne.

9. Eastern Europe to the Black Sea

Old abandoned building at the end of a brick walkway, on a rocky bluff overlooking the sea

River Cruise Line: Grand Circle Cruise Line

Itinerary: Eastern Europe to the Black Sea

The Danube River is one of the most popular European river cruise itineraries, but many don’t venture far enough to reach the Black Sea. But that’s where its more unassuming beauty begins. From Budapest, Hungary, Grand Circle ’s cruise itinerary Eastern Europe to the Black Sea passes through Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania. As you enter the Balkans, you’ll discover storybook scenery that still bears scars of its tumultuous recent history. The experience is equal parts awe-inspiring and humbling.

10. Bordeaux, France

Avalon Waterways panoramic suite with French city in background

River Cruise Line: Avalon Waterways

Itinerary: Bonjour Bordeaux: Chateaux, Wineries, and Charming Villages

There’s much more to France’s Bordeaux region than wine, and Avalon Waterways ’ itinerary Bonjour Bordeaux: Chateaux, Wineries, and Charming Villages is the perfect way to make the most of it. The Garonne and Dordogne Rivers meander through rolling, pastoral hills full of hidden treasures. This route takes you beyond the vineyards to landmarks like the Chateau de la Brede castle and Medieval city of Saint-Emilion. The ship docks overnight in every port, too, leaving you with even more time to explore.

European visa waiver: when must I apply for an Etias and how will travel from the UK work

British travellers to the European Union and wider Schengen Area will need to apply in advance for an online permit to visit from November 2025, according to current plans in Brussels.

EU officials have confirmed that the much delayed “ entry-exit system ” will take effect on 10 November 2024. From that date, every UK traveller entering the Schengen Area must, in theory at least, be fingerprinted and provide a facial biometric. (The requirement will not apply to British visitors to Ireland and Cyprus, which are in the European Union but outside Schengen.)

Six months later after EES takes effect – ie in May 2025 according the latest plan – the Electronic Travel Information and Authorisation System ( Etias ) will launch. But for at least another six months the Etias will be optional.

What is Etias?

British travellers and those from all other “third-country visa-free nationals” (as the UK chose to become after Brexit ) will need provide information in advance so that frontier officials know more about them on arrival – and to identify people who the EU wants to keep out.

Etias, the next step in tightening frontier controls, is a online permit system that is similar to the US Esta scheme (but cheaper at €7/£6 and valid for longer: three years, or until the passport reaches three months to expiry, whichever comes first).

“UK nationals are required to have a valid Etias travel authorisation if they travel to any of the European countries requiring Etias for a short-term stay (90 days in any 180-day period),” says the EU.

“Its key function is to verify if a third-country national meets entry requirements before travelling to the Schengen Area.” The zone covers almost all of the EU (apart from Ireland and Cyprus) plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

When will I need one?

The European Union says: “Starting in the first half of 2025, some 1.4 billion people from over 60 visa-exempt countries are required to have a travel authorisation to enter most European countries.”

That sounds ominous for British travellers to Europe in summer 2025. But fortunately “required” is not accurate in that statement.

The EU also says: “The launch of Etias in mid-2025 will be followed by a transitional period of at least six months. This means that, for travel during this time, travellers should already apply for their Etias travel authorisation, but those without one will not be refused entry as long as they fulfil all remaining entry conditions.”

Those conditions are basically the existing requirements for passport validity:

  • Issued no more than 10 years earlier on the day of entry to the European Union.
  • Valid for at least three months on the intended day of departure from the EU.

So it will not be mandatory for prospective UK visitors to apply online for permission to enter the Schengen Area until November 2025 at the earliest.

Even then, once the “transitional period” is over, a further “grace period” of at least six months will apply on a one-time only basis to British travellers who turn up without an Etias.

The European Union says: “There is an exception: only those coming to Europe for the first time since the end of the transitional period will be allowed to enter without an Etias provided they fulfil all remaining entry conditions.

“All other travellers will be refused entry if they do not hold an Etias travel authorisation.”

The grace period will last at least six months.

This detail is exhausting. Can you provide a quick timeline?

10 November 2024 (confirmed): EU entry-exit system comes into effect, requiring British passport holders to be fingerprinted and provide a facial biometric on entry to the European Union and wider Schengen Area (but not Ireland or Cyprus).

May 2025 (unconfirmed, but no earlier): Etias online permit becomes available, with a transitional period of at least six months during which Etias is optional.

November 2025 (unconfirmed, but no earlier): Etias transitional period ends. Grace period begins, giving travellers without an Etias a one-time only pass.

May 2026 (unconfirmed, but no earlier): Grace period ends; all British passport holders must have an Etias.

How will I apply?

At the heart of the system is an Etias website . An app will follow (any apps that currently purport to be official EU Etias apps are imposters).

Travellers will be required to submit personal information including name, address, contact details in Europe and passport data. They must also state an occupation (with job title and employer). Students must give the name of their educational establishment.

The applicant must give details of any serious convictions in the past 20 years.

Travellers must also provide the reason for their journey (holiday, business, visiting family, etc), specify the Schengen Area country they will first arrive in, and provide the address of their first night’s stay – which will pose a problem for tourists who like to make plans as they go along.

It is likely that for subsequent journeys the traveller will not be expected to update the information.

The fee is €7 (£6) for all applicants aged 18 to 70. While those under 18 or over 70 will still need to apply for and hold an Etias, they need not pay.

What happens to the information?

Every application will be checked against EU and relevant Interpol databases, as well as “a dedicated Etias watch-list”.

The system will be tuned to pick out individuals suspected of being involved in terrorism, armed robbery, child pornography, fraud, money laundering, cybercrime, people smuggling, trafficking in endangered animal species, counterfeiting and industrial espionage.

In a case of mistaken identity, will I be able to appeal?

Yes. If you are suspected of one or more of the above offences, but in fact have led a blameless life, you will be allowed to argue your case. Details of how to appeal will be included with the notice of rejection.

How far in advance must I apply?

The aim is for an Etias to be granted in most circumstances within minutes, though even a straightforward application could take up to four days.

If an application is flagged (ie there is a “hit” with one of the databases) the prospective visitor may be asked to provide additional information. Alternatively, says the EU, the applicant may be asked “to participate in an interview with national authorities, which may take up to additional 30 days”.

The European Union says: “We strongly advise you to obtain the Etias travel authorisation before you buy your tickets and book your hotels.”

If I get an Etias, must I print anything out?

No. The frontier guard will get all the information they need from the passport you used to apply for your Etias.

Will my Etias be checked before departure to the EU?

Yes. Most British travellers to Europe will have their Etias status checked by the airline, as currently happens with travel to the US (Esta), Canada (eTA) and many other countries.

Airlines are obliged to ensure passenger comply with the immigration rules of the destination. A couple of them made a complete mess of it when the post-Brexit passport regime took effect, and invented their own rules .

To try to avoid a repeat, I have written to the airlines’ representative body to try to ensure that they are fully aware of the “optional” nature of Etias during the transitional and grace periods before it becomes mandatory.

For subsequent trips, must I amend the online information about the purpose where I am staying?

My understanding is that information on where you are going and staying, and the reason for your trip. is needed only at the application stage. The form should be completed with reference to your first journey.

As with the US Esta, after you have been admitted once and returned home you should be able to enter again without updating such information online.

Is Etias a visa?

This answer to this common question depends on your interpretation of semantics. Officially, it is exactly the opposite of a visa. Europe says that Etias is “a pre-travel authorisation system for visa-exempt travellers”. It is a similar concept to the US Esta and Canadian eTA, which are not technically visas.

But Etias requires visitors to:

  • Apply in advance
  • Provide substantial personal information
  • Be issued with a permit to cross a border.

So I contend it amounts to a normal person’s understanding of a visa.

Once I have an Etias, am I guaranteed admission to the Schengen Area?

No. “Mere possession of a travel authorisation does not confer an automatic right of entry,” says the EU. As with the US, travellers can be turned away for any reason, with the Etias permission rescinded.

Must I apply for an Etias every time I travel to Europe?

No. The permit will be valid for three years, or until your passport reaches three months before expiry, whichever is the earlier. (Note also that British passports must not be over 10 years old on the day of entry to the European Union .)

Will I need an Etias to travel to Ireland?

No. Ireland is not in the Schengen Area, and the Common Travel Area – incorporating the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands – transcends European Union rules.

If I have a long-stay permit from one of the EU nations, must I obtain an Etias?

How are people without internet access supposed to apply.

They will be expected to get a friend, a family member or a travel agent to make the application for them, in the same way as the US Esta and similar schemes.

Just remind us about the 90/180 day rule?

This rule, to which the UK asked to be subject after leaving the European Union, means that British travellers cannot stay more than 90 days in any stretch of 180 days.

As an example of what it means: if you were to spend the first 90 days of 2025 (January, February and almost all of March) in the Schengen area, you would not be able to return until late June.

Is the UK being punished because of Brexit?

No. Work on strengthening the European Union’s external border was already under way before the UK referendum on membership in June 2016. Initially British officials participated in plans for the entry-exit system.

Neither the EES nor Etias would be relevant if the UK was still in the EU. But the nation voted to leave the European Union and the UK government negotiated for British travellers to be classified as third-country nationals – triggering extra red tape.

Will Etias be the next online scam?

Yes. As with other online travel permits, commercial intermediaries are allowed.

But according to Frontex – the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, which is implementing Etias – there are many scam sites out there that are likely to apply fees way above the basic €7 (£6).

Any site other than europa.eu/etias is unofficial and should not be trusted. One “imposter” site claims to have processed 671 applications already; this is impossible since no applications have been processed anywhere.

Another site offers a 40 per cent discount for early applications. Some use the EU logo, which is illegal.

Frontex also warns about the risk of identity theft if personal information is provided to imposter sites.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO British-Isles Cruises Insider

Because of its island climate, the British Isles don't get quite as warm in the summer or quite as cold in the winter as elsewhere in Europe. People love to visit in the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, when the weather is usually warm and dry.

Of course, British weather is known to be temperamental, and rain is frequent. Pack layers even if you're visiting in summer, as the evenings can get cool, and bring a waterproof jacket and outerwear regardless of the season.

You can find longer 12 night sailings around the British Isles from Amsterdam, Netherlands and shorter sampling sailings out of Southampton, England .

FOR FOODIE'S A CUISINE OF COMFORT

Each country in the British Isles is known for its signature pub grub and comfort food dishes. These hearty and predominantly meaty meals keep locals warm in a region known for its bracing weather.

Traditional Irish Stew for St. Patricks day

Stir the Pot

Made from slow-cooked meat — typically lamb or beef — and root vegetables such as potatoes, onions and carrots, a bowl of Irish stew with a side of crusty bread is only made better when washed down with a pint of Guinness.

The Proof's in the Pudding

Typically served on Sundays, a traditional British roast usually includes roast beef, roast potatoes, a side of vegetables and Yorkshire pudding, a baked pudding often served with gravy. Head to a London pub to tuck into this English tradition.

British Fish and Chips

The O.G. Fish and Chips

Across the British Isles, you'll find thousands of restaurants and shops exclusively serving fish and chips, which first appeared in England in the 1860s. Flaky, tender white fish is deep-fried in a thin, crunchy layer of batter and served alongside thick-cut fried potatoes and "mushy" peas, as the locals call them, which are blended with cream or occasionally ultra-rich bone marrow.
