If you let it, Ohio will surprise you! Ohio road trips will take you to the hills of the Appalachian Mountains, the shores of Lake Erie and the Ohio River. You’ll find caves and caverns, waterfalls and even the world’s largest cuckoo clock!

Every day is an adventure if you choose to explore the world, even if it’s just your own backyard! I fully believe that! There are so many great things to see and do in Ohio and we’ve been spending a lot of years doing just that!

Our home base is the capital city of Columbus, Ohio so we’ve taken many easy day trips from Columbus that require just a short drive. We’ve also traveled further than that, to the corners of the state including small towns in Ohio and the largest cities in the state!

We love to take family vacations to Lake Erie , find waterfalls in Ohio and build sandcastles on Ohio beaches ! There are plenty of fun things to do with kids in Ohio and many hidden gems in Ohio if you take the time to seek them out!

Ohio has so much to see and do! What I love about Ohio is that you can really find a variety of scenery from the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains to the shores of one of the largest lakes in the United States!

Ohio has skyscrapers in cities, cornfields in Amish Country and 316 miles of Lake Erie shoreline!

1. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Ohio is home to one National Park: Cuyahoga Valley National Park and it's definitely worth visiting! If you're planning a trip to the Cleveland/Akron area, make sure to stop by CVNP!

5. Maumee Bay State Park

Maumee Bay State Park is a beautiful Ohio State Park right on Lake Erie! A large beach, great lodge and tons of fun indoor and outdoor activities make this the perfect location for a memorable family-friendly road trip in Ohio!

Maumee Bay State Park is located about 10 miles east of Toledo and about 45 miles from Sandusky. The park has a beach, playground, hiking trails and a great Nature Center!

With an adorable downtown, a clean beach and tasty treats it’s easy to spend the perfect day on Lake Erie in Vermilion, Ohio! Vermilion is home to one of our favorite  Ohio beaches  and we return again and again when we visit Lake Erie as a family (as I’m sure you will be able to tell from the growth of my children in between some of these photos!)

Why do we love Vermilion? It’s such a quaint, well kept town. Parking is easy. The beach is free. The lagoons are unique. There’s ice cream. And Woodstock Cafe.

9. Lake County, Ohio

Lake County, Ohio is about 30 minutes east of Cleveland and borders Lake Erie. It’s home to some of Northeast Ohio’s most beautiful views and Lake Erie’s most popular beaches! Mentor is the largest city in Lake County and makes for a good “home base” for visiting all of the attractions listed in this blog post!

Bellefontaine, Ohio has a cute downtown with mini golf, a highly rated pizza shop, and, of course, coffee!

If you’re looking for a slow-paced and peaceful family vacation on the lake, make plans to visit Lakeside, Ohio, a perfectly picturesque town on Lake Erie where there is a little something for everyone in the family!

Lakeside is home to "Ohio's Most Beautiful Mile" and I can't argue with them there!

Lakeside is located on the north side of the Marblehead Peninsula, not far from the Marblehead Lighthouse and the ferry to Put-In-Bay. It is a gated community meaning there is an entrance fee to enter the community but the fee does include many of the activities and events provided at Lakeside.

Butler County, just north of Cincinnati is home to a ton of fun things to do like EnterTRAINment Junction, Jungle Jim's International Market and Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park.

Also, Butler County has gained a claim to fame with their Butler County Donut Trail so you must make plans to stop at at least a couple of donut shops on your trip!

22. Guernsey County, Ohio

Ohio is full of surprises! A family-friendly road trip to Guernsey County, Ohio includes zebras, walks on the beach, glass blowing, donuts and so much more!

Guernsey County is the birthplace of John Glenn and William Boyd (aka Hopalong Cassidy), the location of over 36 sightings of Bigfoot, and home to the largest wildlife conservation center in North America AND the world’s most extensive glass collection!

Mohican State Park is a popular destination in Ohio! Let me start by saying that Mohican State Park is absolutely stunning in the fall. It’s just drop dead gorgeous at every turn! If you can visit in the fall, I highly recommend!

But, you should also know that Mohican is full of summer adventures! I grew up 30 minutes from Mohican State Park and it was the go-to destination for canoeing every summer when I was a teenager! As a kid, we spent summer days boating on Pleasant Hill Lake and as far as I was concerned, Mohican was “the beach”!

There is something in Dublin, Ohio for the whole family! From public art installations, to fun playgrounds to some of the biggest festivals in Central Ohio (and the world!), there is always something fun to do in Dublin, Ohio!

My family has had a lot of fun exploring Dublin! There are so many cool things to do in Ohio and road-tripping is one of them!

There is so much to do and see in Ohio, and the state has so many varied landscapes.

It’s no surprise that Ohio is my favorite state in the Midwest, and that’s because I was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio !

On this list, I have done my best to come up with a road trip for every kind of traveler.

There is a road trip for foodies, art lovers, and history buffs, and even one for those who love haunted and abandoned places.

There are also road trips from Cleveland and road trips from Columbus if you are interested in starting in the major cities of Ohio first.

So, let us take a look at 15 Ohio road trips for your bucket list!

15 Ohio Road Trips For Your Bucket List

The ohio road trips for foodies.

• Boomtown Biscuits and Whiskey
• Der Dutchman
• Larder Delicatessen and Bakery

Start your foodie road trip at one of Cincinnati’s best restaurants , Boomtown Biscuits, and Whiskey.

Boomtown is inspired by early frontier cooking and, of course, whiskey. It is one of the favorite restaurants in Cincinnati.

Next, head to Columbus, the hometown of celebrity chef Guy Fieri. In his hometown, Fieri has said his favorite restaurant is Momo Ghar.

Momo Ghar is located in the North Market and has become world-famous thanks to Fieri’s praise. It is a Tibetan-Nepalese restaurant and is absolutely worth a visit.

Continue on to Der Dutchman for a taste of the Amish Country .

Der Dutchman is a restaurant where you can try traditional Amish dishes, all of which are made with locally grown ingredients.

Finish your trip in Cleveland at the Larder Delicatessen and Bakery.

Larder is a traditional Eastern European deli and bakery and a great way to end your foodie road trip through Ohio.

Major Cities Of Ohio Road Trips

On this road trip, you’ll hit all the major cities of Ohio. Start your trip in Northern Ohio in Cleveland.

In Cleveland, visit one of the many popular museums.

Next, head to Akron. In Akron, check out the Summit Brew Path, where you can sample 22 unique breweries.

After sampling the breweries in Akron, head to Columbus. Columbus is home to Ohio State University, and you’ll find plenty of unique activities to enjoy there.

From Columbus, you’ll head to Dayton. In Dayton, make sure you stop at the Carillon Historical Park or the RiverScape MetroPark for some outdoor fun.

Outside of Dayton is one of the best things to do in Ohio , the Ohio Caverns. It’s a great detour as you head to your final city.

Finish your Ohio road trip journey in Cincinnati. In Cincinnati, make sure you stop at the Carew Tower’s Observation Deck to get a spectacular view of the entire city.

State and National Parks Of Ohio

• Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail
• Cuyahoga Valley National Park
• Hocking Hills State Park
• Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve

There are so many cool state and National Parks in Ohio. Throughout the whole state, you can explore the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.

The trail has several entry points across the state as it winds through 16 states, including Ohio. So hop on and off it as you continue to the other State and National Parks on this Ohio road trip.

At the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, you’ll find one of the best parks in the Midwest . It has miles of stunning trails and even a few waterfalls.

Next, you’ll head to arguably one of the more popular state parks in Ohio, Hocking Hills State Park.

From hiking trails, stargazing, waterfall chasing, and more. The town around this state park also has some interesting things to do .

End your tour of Ohio’s State and National Parks at Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve.

Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve is full of hiking trails where you can admire the local flora and fauna. It is a great way to end your road trip to Ohio’s State and National Parks.

Ohio Road Trips To See The Best Lighthouses

• Ashtabula Harbor Lighthouse
• Lorain Lighthouse
• Marblehead Lighthouse

In Northern Ohio, you’ll find the shores of Lake Erie. That makes it a perfect place to enjoy a road trip admiring Ohio’s lighthouses.

Start your road trip at the Ashtabula Harbor Lighthouse.

It is over 100 years old and sits proudly on the rocky shores of Lake Erie.

Next, head to the Lorain Lighthouse, in Lorain Ohio.

The Lorain Lighthouse is known as the “Jewel of the Port” and is a beloved town landmark. It was built in 1908 and during the summer months, it can be toured.

End your lighthouses road trip at the Marblehead Lighthouse. The Marblehead Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the United State’s side of the Great Lakes.

There is a museum and you can tour the lighthouse in the summer months. It’s a great finishing point for this Ohio road trip.

Haunted Ohio Road Trips

• The Ohio State Reformatory
• Hotel Lafayette

This is one of the more unique Ohio road trips on this list. It’s perfect for those who love to see spooky haunted places in Ohio .

Begin your road trip at The Ridges. The Ridges were once the Athens Lunatic Asylum and are said to be home to the wandering spirits who passed away during the asylum’s many years of operation.

Next, head to Moonville, which is an abandoned coal mining town. You can still see remnants of town, including the supposedly haunted tunnel where a man was killed by a passing train.

Continue on to The Ohio State Reformatory. This former prison is said to be home to the state’s most violent ghosts, as the prison housed the state’s most dangerous prisoners.

End your road trip at the Hotel Lafayette. Hotel Lafayette is in Marietta, which is Ohio’s oldest town.

You can actually spend the night at this historically haunted hotel. Guests say they have had items mysteriously go missing as well as poltergeist activity.

This is one of the Ohio road trips that may not be for everyone, but if you enjoy haunted locations, you’ll love it.

Art Museums Of Ohio

• Columbus Museum of Art
• Columbus African American Sculpture Tour
• Millersburg Open Air Art Museum
• Taft Museum of Art

You’ll begin the Art Museums of Ohio road trip in Columbus, where you’ll find two of your stops.

The first is the Columbus Museum of Art. It is home to many works of Columbus-born artists and has rolling exhibits throughout the year.

From there, take a short walk to start the Columbus African American Sculpture Tour. Throughout the city, you’ll find eleven sculptures created by famous Black artists.

Next, head to the Millersburg Open Air Art Museum. It’s a great way for families to experience art, as it has so many interesting sculptures that kids love to admire.

End your road trip through Ohio’s favorite art museums at the Taft Museum of Art.

The Taft Museum of Art is located in a historic home and is full of unique pieces of art that once belonged to some of Ohio’s most influential families.

Women’s History In Ohio Road Trips

• First Ladies National Historic Site
• Ohio Statehouse Museum Ladies Gallery
• The National Annie Oakley Center at Garst Museum
• The Harriet Beecher Stowe House

Start this road trip in Ohio at the First Ladies National Historic Site. The site honors the many First Ladies that have had an impact on the history of the United States.

It includes a library based on Abigail Fillmore’s collection, exhibits, and films about the previous First Ladies.

From there, visit the Ohio Statehouse Museum Ladies Gallery. The Ladies Gallery is where you will find the portraits of all the women who have served in Ohio’s government.

As the sixth state to ratify the women’s right to vote, it is an important way to remember the women who helped lead the state of Ohio.

Continue on to the National Annie Oakley Center at Garst Museum. There you’ll be able to learn more about the famous wild west woman who was originally from Ohio.

End your journey at the Harriet Beecher Stowe House. Harriet Beecher Stowe is the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin , which played an important role during the Civil War.

Begin your road trip at the Indian Run Falls in Dublin, a suburb outside of Columbus. They are easy to reach, which makes them a great first stop.

Next, head to Brandywine Falls in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Brandywine Falls is 65 feet tall and one of the best waterfalls in the state.

Finish your road trip in Ohio at Hocking Hills State Park.

There you can view three waterfalls. There is the Upper and Lower Falls as well as the Cedar Falls.

They are a great way to end your waterfall-chasing journey in Ohio.

Ohio has a lot to be proud of when it comes to aviation and space exploration history.

Begin this road trip by exploring the National Aviation Heritage Area. There you will learn about Ohio natives, the Wright brothers, and their journey to mastering aviation.

Continue on to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. While there you’ll learn about the nation’s aviation military history that helped lead to the moon landing.

Next, visit the Armstrong Air and Space Museum. The first man on the moon was Neil Armstrong, an Ohio native.

For this road trip, you’ll be staying mostly in Ashtabula County, which is known as ‘Covered Bridge County’.

Start your trip at the shortest covered bridge in America, the West Liberty Bridge.

At only 18 feet long, it is very short, but still very charming.

Next, head to the Netcher Road Bridge, which has a really unique design.

It has a Neo-Victorian design and was opened to the public in 1999, making it one of the newer covered bridges in the area.

Finish your tour of the Covered Bridge Scenic Byway at America’s longest covered bridge.

The Smolen-Gulf Covered Bridge is 613 feet long and stretches across the Ashtabula River. It’s a fitting way to end this road trip in Ohio.

On Kelley’s Island, these glacial grooves are actually the largest accessible grooves in the world.

That absolutely makes them one of the best natural wonders of Ohio.

From there, head to Hocking Hills State Park to see the next two stops on your road trip.

The first is the Old Man’s Cave. It is a massive cave structure that, legend has it, was the home of a hermit in the early 19th century.

Next, hike to the Rock House. The Rock House is another cave structure.

This one has 25-foot high ceilings, and window-like openings, and it was often used as a shelter for Native Americans, bootleggers, and even horse thieves.

End your Ohio road trip at the Ohio Caverns. The Ohio Caverns are one of the best-hidden gems in the Midwest and a great way to end your road trip.

This Ohio Must-See is one of the best road trips from Cleveland as the starting destination.

Start at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland.

Cleveland is considered the birthplace of rock and roll, so it’s only fitting it’s the home of the Hall of Fame and Museum.

You’ll be able to learn about rock and roll history, some of its greatest acts, and much more.

Next, head just outside of Cleveland to Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens.

It is an elaborate country estate that is one of the largest homes in the U.S. Inside the home is a museum that you can tour and there are beautiful gardens as well.

Continue on to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Sports fans will love learning about football’s greatest athletes and seeing authentic memorabilia.

End your road trip at Velvet Ice Cream. Velvet Ice Cream is located in the Ye Old Mill.

Not only will you end your trip sampling some of the best ice cream in the state, but you’ll also get a first hand view of how its made.

Abandoned Ohio Road Trips

• Geauga Lake Amusement Park

If you enjoy abandoned places, then you’ll love this fun and unique road trip.

Start your exploration of Ohio’s abandoned places at the Geauga Lake Amusement Park.

It was once the world’s largest amusement park, but now it is nothing more than an overgrown wasteland. It closed in 2007, and since then has stood abandoned.

Continue on to a small town now known as “Helltown”.

The town’s original name was Boston Mills, but after the government forced all occupants to leave, it earned its current nickname.

You’ll find abandoned structures that are close to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Finish your abandoned Ohio road trip at the Molly Stark Hospital.

The Molly Stark Hospital was a mental institution as well as a tuberculosis hospital.

It officially closed in the 1990s and has laid abandoned ever since.

Fall Foliage Of Ohio Road Trips

If you are looking to experience the beautiful fall foliage of Ohio , then you’ll love this road trip.

Start your trip at the Wayne National Forest.

The Wayne National Forest is in the Appalachian foothills of Ohio.

The forest covers a quarter of a million acres of land, so you’re guaranteed to see some beautiful fall foliage.

Continue North to Hocking Hills State Park.

Hocking Hills State Park is one of my personal favorite places to admire Ohio’s fall foliage.

With miles of hiking trails, unique cave systems, and beautiful waterfalls, it creates a stunning background to fall’s colored leaves.

End your road trip in Ashtabula County.

There is nothing like the famous covered bridges surrounded by beautiful fall foliage.

Packing List For Your Ohio Road Trips

No matter if you are flying to or driving to Ohio it is always a great idea to pack light. Read some tips on   how to pack lightly   here .

I like that it holds its charging capabilities for several uses so I do not have to worry about it while out and about, and if I forget to recharge it at night, it will still be good to go the next day.

My daughter gifted me with this  FugeTek selfie stick and tripod   setup for my birthday. I absolutely love it! It is made of lightweight aluminum and so easy to use. It has Bluetooth connectivity and is a breeze to use for group shots or that perfect selfie! 

I was not a fan of packing cubes until I started to use them! This is the  exact set  of packing organizers I use  whenever I travel.

Hydration is so important. You want to remain hydrated to support your immune system which in turn will be stronger to fight off any germs you will encounter during your travels.  You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you. 

I never leave home on a trip without my  Bobble filtration bottle .  The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for travel and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack or your purse.

When filled with water, it is not too heavy to carry. And the charcoal filter ensures fresh clean water whenever you fill the Bobble. You can find  filter replacements here. 

Perhaps you are traveling a long distance and packing space is a premium in your suitcase, or in your car.

You will want a  backpack or daypack  with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc.. This   foldable water-resistant backpack   would be great.

Here, aviation enthusiasts can marvel at the impressive collection of vintage aircraft, including the iconic Ford Tri-Motor, World War II exhibits, and a fully restored B-25 Mitchell bomber. As you venture east, stop by Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, a birder's paradise, during spring migration. It's where you can spot rare feathered friends like warblers and sandpipers.

Ohio River Scenic Byway

The whole byway traverses 943 miles, and Ohio is home to a whopping 452-mile portion. This section is a historic odyssey of the Ohio River Scenic Byway, which commences in the bustling city of Cincinnati and meanders along the mighty Ohio River before concluding in East Liverpool. You may start at the Cincinnati Museum Centre at Union Terminal, where you can explore interactive exhibits and marvel at the stunning Art Deco architecture. The byway passed through 13 stunning counties, including Hamilton, Scioto, and Athens.

Amish Country Byway

The Amish Country Byway takes you on a voyage through 160 miles of Ohio's heartland, where time seems to stand still. Leaving behind the modern world, you will find yourself in the timeless traditions of the Amish beginning in Holmes County. Begin your adventure at the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center in Berlin, where you can learn about the history and values of these communities. Don't forget to stroll through Behalt – a 10-foot cyclorama illustrating their story.

As you wind through rolling hills and lush farmlands, be sure to stop by Lehman's in Kidron, a store that celebrates the beauty of self-sufficiency with everything from non-electric appliances to heirloom seeds. Continuing south, make a stop in Walnut Creek to savor mouthwatering Amish cuisine at Der Dutchman Restaurant. Olentangy Heritage Corridor

The Olentangy Heritage Corridor is what you would call short, with 10.5 miles and sweet from Franklin to Delaware County. You should take a few minutes to admire the historic Delaware County Courthouse, a stunning piece of architecture. Then, hop on the trail along the Olentangy River, where you can enjoy a leisurely walk or bike ride with frequent views of the peaceful river. Then, venture to the historic Stratford Ecological Center, a hidden treasure promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental education. You can tour the farm, hike the trails, and meet the resident farm animals.

As you approach Powell, take a detour to the Olentangy Caverns and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, where you can get up close with various animals. You should also not forget the nearby Char-Mar Ridge Preserve, a hidden gem teeming with wildflowers in the spring and offering great hiking opportunities.

Appalachian Byway

You can step into the heart of Appalachian culture as you embark on the 105-mile Appalachian Byway, a journey that begins in Clarington and ends in Nelsonville. Highlights along the way include Burr Oak State Park and The Wilds, a safari zoo. Check out the Little Cities of Black Diamonds Museum in Shawnee, which tells the story of the coal-mining history of the region. The Ohio & Erie Canalway offers you a full 110 miles from Cleveland to New Philadelphia, also passing by the Cuyahoga River . Before setting out, visit the Cleveland History Center to explore the exhibits on the canal's role in shaping the region. Then, hit the road, tracing the canal's path through picturesque towns and charming landscapes. As you journey onward, don't miss the picturesque Zoar, founded by a group of German separatists in 1817. You can wander its cobblestone streets and explore the Zoar Village State Memorial, a preserved 19th-century community with historic buildings and lush gardens. Lock 29, one of the canal's original locks, now surrounded by tranquil scenery, is a perfect spot for a stroll. 

Big Darby Plains Scenic Byway

The 27-mile Big Darby Plains Scenic Byway is a journey through one of Ohio's most pristine and ecologically significant regions of Union County and stretching to Plain City County. One of the highlights along this route is the Darby Plains, a serene landscape of rolling prairies, wetlands, and clear streams. Stop at the Darby Creek Greenway Trail, where you can take a walk or bike ride through this natural wonder. You can also explore the nearby Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park, where you can bird watch and even spot bison in their natural habitat.

Scioto Heritage Trail

The Scioto Heritage Route is an 84-mile tribute to the region's rich heritage and its stunning riverside landscapes from downtown Portsmouth and moving towards the Shawnee State Forest. The charming Southern Ohio Museum and Cultural Center houses a remarkable collection of art and historical artifacts, including a stunning quilt exhibit and engaging displays of the region's heritage, is your first stop. Ohio Road Trip: Mapped Stops

1. Hocking Hills State Park

The Hocking Hills region of southeast Ohio is one of the most scenic places in the Midwest. As you explore all of Hocking Hills’ state parks, forests, and preserves, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped out of Ohio and into some diverse public land out west.

With its lofty cliffs, plunging waterfalls, noteworthy rock formations, deep gorges with picturesque teal-colored water, and explorable recessed caves, it’s easy to see why this slice of Ohio is one of the  most beloved places in the state.

While Hocking Hills isn’t exactly a secret among locals and Midwesterners, there are plenty of hidden gems tucked inside the boundaries that are just waiting to be explored.

2. Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park

Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park is one of Ohio’s best-kept secrets . While the secret is out on Hocking Hills, at least amongst Midwesterners, Nelson-Kennedy Ledges still manages to remain camouflaged from tourists.

As a 24-year Indiana resident, I frequented the Ohio State Parks. While Hocking Hills was overall more impressive, Nelson-Kennedy was my favorite place in Ohio to escape the crowds and hike jaw-dropping trails.

While you’re at Nelson-Kennedy Ledges , hike the four short trails that wind through impressive rock formations such as Devil’s Icebox, Indian Pass, and Old Maid’s Kitchen. Along the way, you’ll pass by Cascade Falls, a spectacular waterfall cascading off one of the giant cliffs. AKA: my favorite spot in this park.

3. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Cuyahoga Valley is one of our park system’s most underrated National Parks. Though the trails, ski area, and river get plenty of traffic, the park receives underwhelming reviews simply because of its location.

But, if I’ve taught you anything in this blog post already, it’s that Ohio harbors some surprising secrets. Cuyahoga Valley is bursting with hidden gems that you just have to see for yourself.

In Cuyahoga Valley, you’ll find yourself wandering amongst waterfalls, caves, cliffs, and mossy ledges reminiscent of those in Nelson-Kennedy .

While you’re in Cuyahoga Valley National Park , you can bike the Towpath Trail, board a train on the scenic railroad, paddle the river, and hike to a waterfall.

4. Viaduct Park

Viaduct Park is a must-see near Cuyahoga Valley National Park on your Ohio road trip!

Viaduct Park is one of the many metropolitan parks located outside of Cleveland. While Cleveland is a bustling city teeming with manmade architecture, there are plenty of natural features to be found in its surrounding metro parks.

What’s so special about this park, you might ask? Easy! It’s the Great Falls at Tinker Creek , one of Ohio’s widest waterfalls.

To access the waterfall, take the easy 0.6-mile out & back trail right off the parking area. There is a viewing platform perched above the falls, but I’d encourage you to scramble the boulders by the falls below to get the best views of the Great Falls of Tinkers Creek.

5. Cascade Park

Cascade Park is another metro park. This one is located outside of the city of Elyria, west of Cleveland.

Cascade Park is most attractive thanks to its two tumbling waterfalls that flow into the Black River. But aside from those falls, the park’s hikes are very scenic. The river twisting through the park and the rocky ledges sprinkled across the landscape are striking.

The ledges trail with West Falls spur is my favorite trail; it’s about a 0.6-mile loop. There is a separate parking area for East Falls. The West Falls of the Black River is the more impressive of the two waterfalls, but East Falls is still certainly worth seeing!

6. Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve

This stunning nature preserve 50 miles east of Columbus spotlights a deep gorge cut by the Licking River through remarkable sandstone formations.

10 miles of hiking and biking trails wind through rock formations and run alongside waterfalls, quarries, cliffs, and a river.

The main trail, Blackhand Trail, is 4.2 miles long, flat, paved, and suitable for hikers, bikers, and dogs.

If you want to step off the paved path, take the two trails that stem from the Blackhand Trail: Quarry Rim and Chesnut. There are two other trails in the park as well. Access the Oak Knob Trail from the North Parking lot and the Canal Trail from the main parking lot. Note that these four trails are not dog-friendly.

• Pets: Leashed pets are allowed on the Blackhand Trail ONLY.

7. John Bryan State Park

John Bryan State Park is an incredible park in western Ohio featuring a limestone gorge cut by the Little Miami River. ( FUN FACT: The Little Miami River is a National Scenic River!)

The Little Miami River is a major highlight of the park! Watch as it flows gently over pebble-sized rocks in some sections and tumbles angrily through narrow canyons and around boulder-strewn islands in other sections.

In John Bryan State Park, there are endless recreational possibilities. You can paddle, swim, camp, hike, rock climb, fish, mountain bike, ski, and so much more.

8. Clifton Gorge State Preserve

Just outside of John Bryan State Park, Clifton Gorge State Preserve provides more recreation opportunities. In fact, the two parks are connected. You can hike from one park to another without moving your vehicle. But you’ll have to leave your dog at home for this one: pets are not allowed.

Clifton Gorge is truly a geological marvel. The park protects a spectacular dolomite and limestone gorge cut by – you guessed it – the Little Miami River! In some parts, the gorge is narrow, and the water runs wildly through the channel. In other parts of the gorge, cliff overhangs have broken off and formed massive rock debris, which is scattered all along the valley floor.

There are 3 miles of hiking trails at Clifton Gorge. If you have time, I’d hike them all – the Rim, the Gorge, the Narrows, and the Orton. They are all spectacular!

Get ready for the ultimate 7 fun Ohio road trip ideas adventure! Whether you’re a long-time resident or a first-time visitor, Ohio has something spectacular in store for you. With over 30 years of exploration under my belt, I can guarantee that this state has it all.

From the buzzing vibes of High Street in Columbus to the legendary Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, your Ohio journey promises a good time at every turn. Buckle up and join me on seven captivating road trips that are perfect for you and your loved ones. We’ll be making stops in Hamilton, Cincinnati, Marietta, Columbus, Canton, Dayton, and Toledo – in no particular order.

Hamilton, Ohio

Experience the ultimate donut adventure on the famous Butler County Donut Trail in Hamilton, Ohio! With over 16 participating shops, this is the ultimate trail for donut lovers. Collect stamps at each location and earn yourself a cool purple Donut Trail t-shirt when you complete your card.

Among my personal favorites were the mouthwatering Buckeye donut from Jupiter Coffee & Donuts and the delectable creme brûlée donut from Holtman’s. But the choices don’t end there! You’ll also find must-try options at Central Pastry Shop, the Donut Hole, and Stan the Donut Man. Join the fun and indulge in this crowd-pleasing concept – you won’t be disappointed!

Experience the best of Hamilton at the Courtyard by Marriott, located in downtown with convenient access to various attractions. Across the street, you’ll find the Municipal Brew Works brewery for a great local beer experience. The hotel is situated on the edge of the picturesque Marcum Park, featuring a fantastic splash pad and river access.

During my stay, my dad and I enjoyed exploring Hamilton’s main streets and browsing the unique boutiques. The town is filled with incredible street art, including murals, sculptures, and a statue of Alexander Hamilton himself.

When it comes to dining, Hamilton has something for everyone. Whether you’re in the mood for a retro drive-in or a gourmet eatery with amazing craft cocktails and trivia, you won’t be disappointed.

At Jolly’s car hop, we indulged in chili dogs, fries, and ice-cold root beer. I couldn’t resist the mouthwatering Going Back to Cali burger (complete with bacon, Swiss cheese, and avocado) at Billy Yanks , especially after devouring a plate of deep-fried deviled eggs – a truly heavenly appetizer.

And don’t forget to try the Spam Fries, a must-try dish that’s also perfect for capturing Instagram-worthy photos.

My dad and I had a blast at the Pinball Garage , playing vintage pinball games like KISS, Beatles, and Game of Thrones. Afterward, we treated ourselves to a delicious banana split and dipped cone with crunch coat from Flub’s .

One place that came highly recommended was the Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park, with 300+ acres and over 80 sculptures to explore. We loved cruising around in a golf cart to see the sculptures and checked out the indoor ancient sculpture museum. It’s definitely a must-see attraction.

Cincinnati—Easily One of the Best Ohio Road Trips

Experience the vibrant city of Cincinnati, where you’ll find two iconic symbols: Fiona the hippo and the delicious local chili. At the historic Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden , the oldest zoo in the country, you can embark on an exciting animal-filled adventure. From birds of the world to an elephant reserve, a reptile house, and even a world of insects, there’s something for everyone.

While Fiona, the world’s most famous hippo , and her brother Fritz steal the spotlight, there’s so much more to discover in Cincinnati. With its 23 rooms filled with thousands of books, it’s a haven for book lovers.

Treat yourself to a heavenly cup of coffee from Stauf’s Coffee Roasters and satisfy your sweet tooth with a macaron or delightful pastry from Pistacia Vera, a decadent bakery.

For a truly amazing experience, visit the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens . Explore the 13 acres of stunning gardens, exotic plants, and breathtaking sculptures. Pay close attention to the impressive 18-piece Dale Chihuly collection and witness glassblowing in action. Whether you visit the cafe or participate in year-round programming, you’ll be captivated by this Columbus gem.

Canton, Ohio

Want to experience the best of Canton on your Ohio road trip? Don’t miss out on the must-see attractions!

Start your adventure at the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the birthplace of professional football. Explore the Super Bowl rings and bronze busts of the Hall of Fame inductees – it’s truly incredible. Allow yourself at least an hour to fully appreciate this iconic spot.

Canton has more to offer than just history and football. Don’t miss the chance to visit the National First Ladies Library and Historic Site. You’ll be amazed by the beautiful dresses and china on display, showcasing the elegance of the past.

For a unique experience, head to Gervasi Vineyard , an Ohio gem with a tasting room , top-notch restaurants, accommodations, and charming retail shops. Take a wine tour, enjoy a delicious meal at The Bistro (named one of  America’s 100 Most Romantic Restaurants  by Open Table), or relax with a drink at The Still House.

There’s even a family-style Sunday brunch!

Hungry? Canton won’t disappoint. Start your day with a visit to Cultured Coffee & Waffles , where you can indulge in their decadent waffles (Hell’s Chicken with buffalo dip and blue cheese is amazing!) or enjoy a cup of Joe.

For lunch, make a stop at Taggart’s Ice Cream Parlor, a local institution that offers soup, sandwiches, and salads. Don’t miss their signature dessert, The Bittner, with roasted pecans and chocolate syrup – it’s sinfully delicious.

And if you have some extra time, take a quick trip to Hartville, less than twenty minutes away. Visit the family-owned Hartville Kitchen Restaurant , Marketplace & Flea Market for a mouthwatering lunch and make sure to pick up some baked goods and candy to take home with you. With three locations to explore, shoppers will be in paradise.

Dayton, Ohio

Discover the wonders of Dayton , the Birthplace of Aviation! Even on a quick visit, this city will amaze you. Dive into history at the Carillon Historical Park, with over 30 buildings and the iconic Wright Flyer III. Friendly costumed interpreters will guide you along the way.

And don’t miss the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at the Wright-Patton Air Force Base, the world’s largest and oldest military aviation museum. Its exhibits are so mind-blowing, you’ll forget about the steps you’ve taken.

Hungry? Treat yourself to the best pizza ever at Wheat Penny Oven & Bar , but definitely start with the Eggplant Fries. Wheat Penny’s perfect crust, upscale toppings, and creative combinations will leave you wanting more.

And in the Oregon Historic District, explore the cool nightlife, Mike’s Vintage Toys, Bonnett’s Book Store, and indulge at Lily’s Dayton , a fantastic upscale eatery offering a killer brunch menu, all within 12 square blocks. Dayton is waiting to amaze you!

Toledo, Ohio

And now we come to a town that will literally blow you away if you give it a chance. Toledo was one of the few towns in the country that truly wowed me. It is huge, and you need a game plan rather than driving here and there, so consider staying at Maumee Bay State Park for an overnight, being sure to take in the many amenities and lovely sunsets along the waterfront.

Glass is king in Toledo , so touring the  Glass Pavilion  is a must. Expect world-class attractions (over 5000 items), displays, resident artists showing off their skills, and a fantastic venue that will make your jaw drop.

Across the street is its sister attraction, the Toledo Museum of Art, with as robust art installments (think Rubens, Degas, and Picasso) as any museum in the country. I thought it rivaled DIA in Detroit , but it had its only special flair and focus. This museum is free, with onsite parking and touring exhibits you’ll want to experience as well as the old. 

A second free attraction is the Toledo Botanical Gardens, with 60 acres of lavish sculptures, annual and perennial blooms, and themed gardens. Also in Toledo is the Sundance Kid Drive-In, showing back-to-back shows on two big screens.

For food choices,  Real Seafood Company  was my favorite, offering Parmesan Encrusted Flounder, white cheddar hash browns, and a delicious shrimp cocktail. Real Seafood sits along the Maumee River and is perfect for an after-dinner stroll and seeing the Toledo skyline once you are finished eating.

Toledo has several great breweries, too, so if you fancy a flight, make your way to Maumee Bay Brew Pub. Or, if you’d prefer sweets, Holey Toledo knows how to make a killer donut. 

Two Toledo, Ohio, crowd-pleasing restaurants are Schmucker’s and Tony Packos. Wear stretch pants for Schmucker’s because after a huge comfort food lunch or dinner, save room for a slice of homemade pie from the 25+ varieties.

At Packo’s, a Hungarian food joint made famous by M*A*S*H TV show star Jamie Farr; the Chicken Paprikas was my top pick with Hungarian dumplings.

15 Unique Ohio Road Trips From Columbus

I’m a big fan of Columbus, but sometimes it’s good to get out of town for a bit.

Luckily, you don’t have to go very far to find something fun to do. Ohio has some unique spots where you can enjoy nature, take in a strange museum, visit ancient earthworks, or even explore a castle.

None of these spots are too far from Columbus. In fact, they’re all less than a 3-hour drive from downtown. Now, let’s stop chatting and dive right in. After all, we’ve got some exploring to do!

Of all the regions of the USA, there’s a good chance that (for non-locals) the Midwest is the most surprising–and that alone is an excellent reason to plan a Midwest road trip!

Packed with diverse national and state parks, incredible beaches (yes, beaches!), interesting cities, a seemingly endless array of quaint lighthouses and charming small towns, and so much more, the Midwest is far more than “flyover country”.

Sure, many of the best road trips in the Midwest require a lot of time on the interstate.

And yes, visiting in winter probably isn’t optimal for most first-time visitors.

But, if you’ve never visited the region before, any of these incredible Midwest road trip routes–many of them written by locals–are bound to leave you enchanted.

Don’t underestimate the driving distances.

The Midwest is an expansive region with lots of wide open spaces, and that can lend itself to drives that are longer than some visitors might expect!

Be sure to check estimated driving times carefully when planning your route, and build in plenty of stops to stretch your legs.

… And also to check out the many quirky roadside attractions in the region, like the Corn Palace in South Dakota or the American Gothic House in Iowa!

If you’re renting a car, shop around.

The best company to rent a car from for your Midwest road trip will likely vary dramatically depending on where and when you’re traveling.

Sometimes large international carriers offer the best prices, sometimes local outfits. Sometimes one company has an excellent base price, but terrible rental requirements.

The best way to find your rental car is to search through  Discover Cars , which will sift through dozens of companies to find the best combination of low prices and reasonable rental terms for your road trip route.

Exploring all of the incredible places to visit in the Midwest is a project for a lifetime, not one trip!

As tempting as it is to add on additional driving to stop at just one more waterfall, lighthouse, or small town, make sure that you leave enough time to thoroughly explore each destination rather than spending the entirety of your vacation driving from one spot to the next.

South Dakota State + National Parks Road Trip

One of the best Midwest road trips is a loop from Rapid City, South Dakota making stops in its two national parks, as well as Custer State Park!

This is an easy road trip that you can do in as little as 4 days, but you can also make it part of a larger  South Dakota road trip itinerary .

Start in Rapid City to begin your trip and then make your way first to Wall, SD.

This fun little town is a great place to stop at Wall Drug Store for scenic photos in an Old West-feeling setting.

From there, head through Badlands National Park from the Northeast Entrance, taking the 30-mile Badlands Loop Road and stopping at as many overlooks as possible!

Depart via the Pinnacles Entrance and then make your way to Wind Cave National Park.

Wind Cave National Park is beautiful but there must be some advance planning as you need advance reservations to visit Wind Cave.

Book your reservation for one of the 3 tours, ranging from moderate to hard difficulty, on the  NPS website here . 

After visiting Wind Cave, swing up north towards Custer State Park for one of the final stops on this South Dakota tour.

Custer State Park in the Black Hills is home to lots of stunning wildlife, including bison, pronghorn antelope, and elk. Bring your binoculars and a zoom lens!

Finally, drive back to Rapid City to end your road trip.

Driving Distance

Recommended road trip length.

At a minimum, you should spend at least 2 days in Badlands National Park, 1 day in Wind Cave National Park, and 1 day in Custer State Park.

This road trip can be done easily in 4 days, but you can stretch it out to a week and visit other sites like Mt. Rushmore, the Black Hills National Forest, Keystone, and Crazy Horse.

Ohio Road Trip Along Lake Erie’s Coast

One of the Midwest’s best road trips is  driving Ohio’s Lake Erie coast   from Cleveland to Marblehead for gorgeous lake views, beautiful sunsets, and lots of local history.

Beginning in downtown Cleveland, spend a day exploring the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, Old Arcade, and West Side Market. 

Depart Cleveland the next day via Route 2, with several lakefront parks to your right. 

Edgewater Park and Lakewood Park offer Cleveland skyline views, while Edgewater Park and Huntington Reservation have pretty beaches. 

Continue for thirty minutes towards Lorain, OH, transitioning over to Route 6. 

While being a rust belt city, Lorain also offers a broad beach at Lakeview Park and the charming Lorain Harbor Lighthouse. 

Literature fans may also know it as Toni Morrison’s hometown and the setting of  The Bluest Eye .

Vermilion, the next town over, is a quaint location for an overnight stay. 

Its small downtown has an old-timey feel, with historic storefronts and a soda shop. 

Take a stroll down Main Street for elegant dining at Chez Francois, and to see tiny Vermilion Lighthouse and its adjacent beach.

After leaving Vermilion, continue down Route 6 for a short rural break until you reach Sandusky. 

After consuming Asian fusion food and craft beer at Small City Taphouse, walk 10 minutes to the Maritime Museum of Sandusky. 

This museum features exhibits on the Battle of Lake Erie and Sandusky’s role in the Underground Railroad. 

If you love roller coasters, plan an extra day in Sandusky to catch thrills at Cedar Point.

Finally, drive 30 more minutes to the tip of the Marblehead Peninsula to reach the 200-year-old Marblehead Lighthouse. 

This beauty is the oldest continuously running lighthouse on the Great Lakes.

With no stops,  this drive  takes a little over 2.5 hours. 

However, I recommend slowing down over a long weekend to fully enjoy each stop.

North Dakota Road Trip (Fargo to Theodore Roosevelt National Park)

Many people overlook North Dakota, however, the state has a plethora of road trip-worthy sites.

Starting in Fargo, visiting the town that is unfairly characterized by the movie of the same name, visitors can enjoy this hip small city of the north.

Be sure to check out the Plains Arts Museum and the wonderful contemporary, traditional, and folk art of the region.

For those with more time, a quick stop in adjacent Moorhead MN, and the Hjemkomst Center, visitors can connect with the local Scandinavian culture through this incredible boat journey.

From Fargo, head west stopping in Jamestown, to see the old wild west town and the largest buffalo.

Similar to many other big roadside attractions throughout the state.

From here, visitors can detour slightly north and visit interesting Lewis and Clark expedition sites such as Fort Mandan (where Lewis and Clark wintered) and the nearby Knife River Indian Villages known as the birthplace of Sacajawea.

Both can easily be visited on the same day before heading on towards Bismarck.

Bismarck, the capital but smaller and sleepier than Fargo has a cute downtown as well as beautiful nature nearby.

But if you are pressed for time save the nature exploration until you head to  Theodore Roosevelt NP , 2 hours west of the capital.

Named for the 26th president, the park protects North Dakotan Badlands and local flora and fauna such as bison.

The park is divided into two non-connected units and at least 2 days are worth spending in the park.

But if you have very limited time, the South Unit has more diversity of sights.

For those with more time and desire to explore local history, a quick stop at Fort Union Trading Post (90 minutes from the north unit) is worth a look at the fur trade and one of the most important forts in the mid-1800s.

About 550 miles, plus time in the national park. 

This Midwest road trip can be anywhere from 4 to 8+ days.

It’s recommended to spend at least 2 days in Fargo, a day en route to Bismarck, 1-2 days in and around Bismarck, and another 2-3 days in Theodore Roosevelt NP. 

Minnesota’s Iron Range

Have you heard of Minnesota’s Iron Range ?

Stretching from central Minnesota and north to the border of Canada, the region is home to some of the best mountain biking in the country, excellent hiking, and the pristine wilderness of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

This Midwest road trip itinerary starts and ends in Minneapolis, which is a city worth exploring!

Enjoy an afternoon at a Minnesota Twins baseball game or paddling the lakes in the heart of the city. 

Next, head to Crosby which is part of Cuyuna Country. What once were mining pits are now crystal clear lakes surrounded by mountain biking trails for all levels.

Spend a day paddle boarding or kayaking the lakes or cruising the trails. Gear rentals are available in Crosby.

From there, drive to Ely which is a gateway into the Boundary Waters.

This area is among the most beautiful and remote wilderness in the US, best explored by canoe. Find guides and outfitters in Ely for gear and permits.

For hiking, try the Norberg Lake Trail at nearby Bear Head Lake State Park or the Bass Lake Loop Trail. 

Duluth is a harbor town on Lake Superior, offering easy access to popular destinations along Minnesota’s north shore.

Be sure to watch for the big ships entering the harbor near Canal Park, relax on the beach at Park Point, and stop at one of the many breweries in town.

Ursa Minor and Bent Paddle are local favorites!

These destinations are just 2-3 hours apart and have tons to explore.

Spend a minimum of 1 day in each of the 4 destinations for a 4-5 day trip.

Or, take your time and spend up to 3 days in each destination for a 7-10 day road trip.

Badlands National Park Scenic Road Trip

At only39 miles, the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway is a short but mighty road trip in South Dakota. 

Driving through Badlands National Park  is a surreal experience.

You’ll feel like you’re on another planet instead on a road trip in the Midwest USA.

The drive begins in Cactus Flat at Exit 131 off I-90. You’ll know you’re nearing the exit because you’ll begin seeing sand-colored buttes, spires, and cliffs to the south.

After taking the exit, it’s a short distance to enter Badlands National Park.

Before you even get to the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, you’ll see a few overlooks and trailheads.

The visitor center itself is a great place to get your bearings, take a bathroom break, and get something to eat at the restaurant next door.

From there, you’ll continue west through the otherworldly landscape.

In addition to the unique formations, you’re also likely to encounter pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, bison, and prairie dogs.

The road ends at Wall, which is a destination in its own right with its famous, or infamous, Wall Drug.

You could drive straight through in about an hour, but what’s the fun in that?

For a more immersive experience, camp at one of the two campgrounds within the park and take some day hikes.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Easily one of the best road trips in the Midwest USA, a drive through Michigan’s upper peninsula is a must-do.

Start one of the best Michigan road trips of them all by crossing Mackinac Bridge into the Upper Peninsula.

If you want, leave your car behind and enjoy all that Mackinac Island has to offer before continuing on.

After all, this island is completely car-free and features top attractions like Fort Mackinac and Arch Rock. 

Next, continue onto the peninsula and check out the natural beauty of Kitch-iti-kipi, an incredible local spring with crystal-clear waters.

Then, hop back on the road and drive to Porcupine Wilderness State Park.

It’s a wonderful area with stellar views of Lake Superior, gorgeous local waterfalls, and 90+ miles of trails that will take you through vast old-growth forests. 

From here, drive until you hit Marquettethe.

It’s known for being the largest city in this UP (Upper Peninsula for all the non-Michiganders out there) and is a great place to explore Presque Isle Park, Sugarloaf Mountain, and Lakenenland Sculpture Park. 

Finally, conclude your road trip at the Pictured Lakes National Lakeshore with its dynamic natural landscape.

Be sure to explore the multicolored Pictured Rocks cliffs, Miners Castle, Chapel Rock sandstone formations, and Twelvemile Beach.

While this road trip isn’t long, taking around 2 hours to drive, plan on devoting between 3 and 5 days to this trip.

You could definitely spend an entire day on Mackinac Island alone!

Mount Rushmore to the Badlands, South Dakota

Mount Rushmore to the Badlands of South Dakota is a fantastic Midwest road trip route.

While there’s a sad story behind the impressive facade of Mount Rushmore, there’s no doubt that visiting the monument and associated museum is an incredible experience.

After visiting Mount Rushmore and touring all it has to offer, you will travel to the Badlands National Park.

Badlands National Park is a very beautiful and unique area.

There are really fun hiking trails in the Badlands , and it is a great place to visit with your family. 

You will be surprised at all the animals the Badlands offer.

You can see big horn sheep, buffalo, and the famous prairie dog area where you will see lots of prairie dogs. You can get very close to the prairie dogs but don’t touch them or get too close!

If you want to stay in the park, you will need to stay at Cedar Pass Lodge in one of their rental cabins. 

There are some hotels and camping options close by, but the Cedar Pass Lodge is the only option if you are looking at staying inside the park.

This is a classic road trip in the Midwest, and a fantastic way to spend a long weekend (or longer!).

About 80 miles.

We recommend spending at least 3 days enjoying this road trip in South Dakota, though 4-5 days would be better if you have more than a long weekend to work with.

Missouri + Southern Illinois Road Trip

When planning a road trip in the Midwest, you won’t want to miss Missouri and Southern Illinois.

The perfect road trip includes a variety of cities filled with activities, nature to explore, and delicious food to eat, and you’ll find plenty of that here.

Start in Kansas City, Missouri where you’ll visit the American Jazz Museum and Money Museum.

For the famous Kansas City BBQ, check out Gates Bar-B-Q and order burnt ends.

Spend two nights here, before continuing east across the state to St. Louis. 

A weekend in St. Louis is the perfect amount of time.

Start at the country’s smallest national park, The Gateway Arch National Park, ride the tram to the top for incredible views over the city.

The free museum teaches the history of St. Louis and its title as the gateway to the west.

That night, visit Busch Field for a Cardinals game with the arch as your backdrop.

For kids, and kids at heart, spend a few hours at the City Museum, the most unique children’s museum you’ll find.

Fill the rest of your time with visits to the free activities, the St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art Museum, and Missouri History Museum!

Eat some of St. Louis’s staples, toasted ravioli, St. Louis Style pizza, St. Louis style ribs, and gooey butter cake.

Finish off the road trip by venturing across the river into Illinois to Shawnee National Forest.

The draw here is the Garden of the Gods which features fun dog-friendly hikes and super unique rock formations.

The whole trip should take about 5 to 6 days, and will only require about 6.5 hours of driving.

Great Cities of the Midwest Road Trip Loop

Looking for a fun road trip itinerary in the Midwest?   

Making a round trip from Chicago, Illinois to Milwaukee and Madison in Wisconsin will give you a great sampling of museums, architecture, and natural beauty to enjoy.

Start your road trip in Chicago, Illinois. One of the undisputed best experiences here is the architectural river cruise . 

Your vantage point from the river gives you great views of the skyscrapers, and you’ll learn a lot about Chicago’s architecture and history.

Chicago is also home to several fantastic museums, including the famous Art Institute of Chicago.

The Field Museum is the home of Sue, the largest Tyrannosaurus rex specimen ever discovered.

Your next stop is Madison, Wisconsin. This college town is also the capital of Wisconsin. 

The Capitol building is incredible and is free to tour. Be sure to take in the panoramic city views from the observation deck!

One of the  best things to do in Madison   is to visit the Olbrich Botanical Gardens. 

The outdoor areas of the garden are free to visit. Don’t miss the phenomenal Thai pavilion and garden – this is definitely the garden’s highlight!

Continue on to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 

Enjoy local favorites like bratwurst and fried cheese curds (and perhaps a local beer) at Old World 3 rd  Street. 

Then take a stroll along the downtown Riverwalk and enjoy the public art including ‘The Bronz Fonz’.

Spend an afternoon at one of Milwaukee’s museums, such as the world’s only Harley-Davidson Museum. 

Be sure to take a look at the amazing architecture of the Milwaukee Art Museum, with its Burke Brise Soleil ‘wings’.

320 miles round-trip.

This Midwest road trip itinerary will take you about a week since you’ll want to spend a minimum of 2 days in each city. 

Route 66 Road Trip Through the Midwest (Chicago to Oklahoma)

The classic US road trip Route 66 starts in Chicago Illinois and passes through the Midwestern states of Missouri and Kansas before crossing into Oklahoma and continuing west all the way to Los Angeles, California. 

Of course, it’s quicker to travel on the Interstate but the heart of the road trip is to follow the original route across the country.

Travelers could easily spend a couple of days exploring Chicago alone, but it’s at least worthwhile checking out the Route 66 BEGIN sign at E Adams St and S Michigan Ave.

The stretch across Illinois between  Chicago to St Louis   can take upwards of 12 hours, especially if stopping at several of the different points of interest. 

When the Interstate was built, it bypassed all the small towns along the route.

To encourage travelers to come back many of the towns created unique roadside attractions.

Today, you can find a mixture of historic buildings that were part of the original Route 66 as well as the unique attractions from the time after the Interstate was built.

Some highlights between Chicago, IL, and Catoosa, OK include The Gemini Giant (Wilmington, IL), Pontiac, IL, the Chain of Rocks Bridge, IL, Gateway Arch National Park (St. Louis, MO), the World’s Largest Rocking Chair (Fanning, MO), Cars On The Route (Galena, KS) and the Blue Whale (Catoosa, OK).

Approximately 700 miles.

This road trip could be done in around 3 days (overnight stops in St Louis, MO, and Carthage, MO).

However, with the addition of spending time exploring the larger cities of Chicago and St. Louis, it is better to take around 5 or 6 days.

Great Lakes Road Trip in Wisconsin + Michigan

One of the best Midwestern road trip journeys is a National Lakeshore Road Trip to visit 2 of the best kayaking trips in the US , Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a spectacularly beautiful area in the most northern part of Wisconsin that has a 12-mile stretch of mainland rocky cliffs with sea caves and a chain of 21 islands.

It also has the distinction of having the most lighthouses in the USA.

A kayak tour of the mainland sea caves will take you to the prettiest spots around the reddish sandstone shoreline.

You will cruise through incredible caves in turquoise water and can also hike the Lakeshore Trail through old-growth forest for a different vantage point.

On your way to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, break up the drive with a day at Porcupine Mountains State Park where you’ll find waterfalls, tons of hiking trails, and gorgeous views, especially for fall foliage.

It adds an extra hour of drive time but it’s completely worth it.

When you arrive in Munising, you’ll be treated to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore’s towering multi-colored cliffs, bright blue waters, and hidden caves.

On a kayak tour, you can paddle to Lovers Leap Arch, Chapel Rock, Battleship Row, and sea caves. Or hike the Chapel Loop Trail to get even more incredible views. 

But this place isn’t all about the rocks. Don’t miss Twelvemile Beach for a traditional beach day or enjoy the sunset at Sandpoint beach.

And you’ll also find beautiful waterfalls at Munising Falls and Miner’s Falls. 

This road trip in the Midwest takes approximately 6 hours of driving.

Plan at least 4 days to be able to do daily activities and a week to enjoy at a more leisurely pace.

Kansas City, Omaha + Des Moines Road Trip Loop

There are many things to love about Kansas City — flowing fountains, tree-lined boulevards, and the world’s best barbeque.

So before you head north on this road trip loop through America’s Heartland, be sure you’ve hit all of the highlights in the Chiefs Kingdom. 

Start with the Liberty Memorial. This 217-foot tall limestone tower surrounded by acres of green space honors those who perished in World War I and is home to the only museum dedicated to the Great War.

It’s also one of the best places to view the Kansas City skyline. 

Then head to the Country Club Plaza where you can shop, dine, and admire Spanish-inspired architecture and several of the city’s most renowned fountains.

Then stroll through the sculpture garden, explore the glass maze, and snap a selfie with one of four, oversized badminton shuttlecocks at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

And you certainly won’t want to leave town without eating your fill of Kansas City barbeque .

The next stop is Nebraska’s biggest city, Omaha, about three hours to the north.

Walk across the Missouri River – a natural border between Nebraska and Iowa – on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.

Then enjoy The RiverFront connecting river to Downtown Omaha with lush green space, pet-friendly areas, a sculpture garden, and more.

Fuel up at a cafe or eatery in the Old Market, and don’t miss the world-renowned Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.

The capital city of Des Moines is about two hours east of Omaha.

Stretch your legs after the drive by wandering through Pappajohn Sculpture Park or strolling through the botanical garden.

Tour the gold-domed capitol building, and learn more about Iowa’s biggest city with an interactive scavenger hunt.

Outdoor enthusiasts will want to hike or bike the Des Moines River Trail, and foodies will want to compare the barbeque at Flying Mango to what they enjoyed in Kansas City.

On the way back to Kansas City, stop in Pella. With its working grain windmill, Dutch bakeries, and thousands of tulips in the spring, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to the Netherlands while exploring the middle of America.

580  miles.

We recommend enjoying this Midwest road trip itinerary over the course of a week, in order to allow about 2 days per city.

1. Dogwood Pass (Beaver)

Most people don’t know there’s an impressive replica of an Old West town tucked away in the hills of southern Ohio . Dogwood Pass in Beaver, Ohio was built to look and feel as authentic as possible, complete with bath houses, saloons, and gun fights. Show and event schedules begin in May. It's one of the most fun little-known attractions in Ohio.

2. Great Serpent Mound (Peebles)

The largest (and most strangely shaped) effigy mound in the entire world can be found right here in Ohio in Adams County. The 1,348 feet long uniquely shaped mound depicts a snake, with an oval shape at its head. Although no artifacts or written records were found near the mound to determine who built it, a nearby village site shows evidence of occupation by both the Adena and the later Fort Ancient Cultures. The original purpose of the mound remains a mystery, though there is some evidence for astronomical correlations.

3. Loveland Castle Museum (Loveland)

If we told you there was a real-life castle in southern Ohio operated by modern-day knights, would you believe us? Close to Cincinnati, you can find just that. The Château Laroche, (more commonly known as the Loveland Castle,) is a museum on the banks of the Little Miami River in Loveland, Ohio— and it’s truly charming.

4. American Sign Museum (Cincinnati)

6. Sugarcreek MetroPark (Bellbrook)

Most people are surprised to find out that Ohio has a tunnel of trees you can hike through—and it’s simply stunning. Sugarcreek MetroPark in Bellbrook, Ohio features the Osage Orange Tunnel, and it’s a magical place. The tunnel was formed by large arching branches of old Osage orange trees, which were purposefully planted in rows in the late 1800s to serve as a farm fence.

7. Hartman Rock Garden (Springfield)

Observe a mixture of history, religion, and depression-era pop culture via this unique garden, built by Harry "Ben" Hartman between 1932 through 1944. It's a backyard folk art display that's downright mesmerizing. And, okay, a bit bizarre, but that just makes us love it all the more!

8. Topiary Park (Columbus)

Few people know about the quaint, seven-acre topiary park in Columbus that features one of Ohio’s most unique gardens, where art and plant life blend. Topiary Park is a "landscape of a painting of a landscape," according to the park’s website. Specifically, the topiary garden depicts Georges Seurat’s famous painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Isle of La Grand Jatte"—and it is the only known topiary representation of a painting. Of all of Ohio's hidden gems, this one is a must-visit!

The Ohio Railway Museum is a great day trip destination for train enthusiasts and the whole family to enjoy. It’s a train station, museum, and railroad that offers fun, round-trip demonstration rides on some of the streetcars and interurbans.
