The mpox strain spreading now is different from the one in 2022: Here's what to know

The World Health Organization’s decision to declare mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years may seem like déjà vu — but there are key differences between the strain that’s causing international concern now and the one that spread in 2022.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection characterized by painful lesions. It’s spread by direct contact with an infected person, animal or contaminated items like clothing or bedding.

The virus is classified into two distinct groups: clade I and clade II. 

Clade II was responsible for the 2022 outbreak, which has led to around 100,000 cases worldwide . 

But now, a version of clade I has spread internationally. The outbreak started in January 2023 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and has since reached 12 other countries in the region.

On Thursday, Sweden confirmed the first known infection of clade I outside Africa , though Swedish health officials said the person was infected while spending time in Africa. Health authorities in Pakistan also confirmed a case of mpox on Friday but have not identified the strain yet. 

Clade I is more transmissible than clade II and capable of being more severe, so infectious disease experts are concerned about further international spread.

“We should have learned a lesson from 2022 that an infection anywhere is potentially an infection everywhere,” said Anne Rimoin, an epidemiology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles Fielding School of Public Health.

How does this version of mpox spread?

Mpox has historically spread in a few ways. The first is through close, personal contact with an infected person, such as skin-to-skin contact with rashes or with saliva or mucus. The second is via contact with contaminated materials. And the third is contact with infected animals: hunting, trapping or cooking them, touching sick rodents or getting bitten or scratched. 

In 2022, the version of clade II that spread globally, dubbed clade IIb, was passed primarily through sexual contact, particularly among men who have sex with men.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo recently, clade Ib has also been spreading through sexual contact among female sex workers and men who have sex with men. Research that hasn’t yet been published or peer reviewed linked an outbreak in an eastern mining town in Congo to professional sex work in bars.

But that’s not the only way the virus is being transmitted. Dr. Stuart Isaacs, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, said much of the spread of clade I could be due to exposure to animals and transmission within households, but limited surveillance in the regions where the virus is make it difficult to know for sure. 

Isaacs said there’s early evidence that clade Ib has certain “properties that are allowing it to spread more readily person to person.”

How severe are the recent cases?

In the past, outbreaks of clade I have been deadlier than clade 2, killing up to 10% of people who got sick . But more recent outbreaks have had lower death rates. Out of an estimated 22,000 cases in this outbreak in Congo , more than 1,200 people have died — which puts the fatality rate at just above 5%. 

By comparison, clade II outbreaks in Africa have generally had a mortality rate of around 1%, and just 0.2% of cases linked to the 2022 global outbreak were fatal.

Rimoin said the disease’s severity “can have less to do with the actual clade and more to do with route of transmission, the immune system of the individual, the source of the infection.” 

The threat in the U.S. could be milder than in Africa, according to Marc Siegel, an associate professor of medicine at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

“The underlying health conditions of the population in the DRC are probably contributing to the current case fatality rate,” he said, using the acronym for the Democratic Republic of Congo. “With less malnutrition and better access to health care resources, I would imagine that the case fatality rate will not be as high as we’re seeing in the DRC.”

Vaccines for mpox are also widely available in the U.S., following a major rollout effort in 2022. Two doses of the mpox vaccine or a previous clade II infection should protect against severe illness from clade I, the Department of Health and Human Service said Wednesday.

Do mpox symptoms differ between the clades?

Symptoms of the two mpox clades can be difficult to distinguish from each other.

The illness generally starts with a rash that progresses to small bumps on the skin, followed by blisters that fill with whitish fluid — a hallmark of the disease — and eventually scab over. People may also experience a fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy and swollen lymph nodes.

These symptoms often disappear on their own within a few weeks. But in severe cases, people may develop larger, more widespread lesions, secondary bacterial infections, pneumonia, heart inflammation or swelling of the brain. Immunocompromised people may develop atypical symptoms and have a greater risk of hospitalization and death. 

Historically, mpox lesions have tended to appear on the face, chest, palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. But during the 2022 outbreak, people frequently developed lesions around the genital and anal region or inside the mouth and throat, presumably because of how the virus was spreading at the time . The lesions were also fewer in number and less pronounced overall.

Some cases of this nature have also been detected in the current outbreak in Congo. 

“There is talk that there are more people that have lesions around the genitals this time around than previous clade I outbreaks,” said Amira Albert Roess, a professor of global health and epidemiology at George Mason University. “It’s going to take us some time to really understand what may be going on here.”

Planning your RV Road Trip

If you are already an experienced or full-time RVer, go ahead and skip down to the bucket list RV road trips . Otherwise, here are some key planning tools to utilize before your first RV trip.

Renting an RV

If you do not already own an RV, it is best to rent a rig for your first RV road trip in the USA. A rental RV allows you to test drive the type, layout, and travel style of an RV before you make a large investment.

Finding Campgrounds

After you’ve secured an RV, you need to find places to sleep. Fortunately, there are several great apps to help you find campgrounds and RV parks in the USA. If you are visiting an area during the peak season (i.e. Winter in Florida) you will need to make campground reservations in advance.

However, if you are traveling during less busy times, it is best to leave a few open days between reservations so you can be more spontaneous.

AllStays has the most comprehensive list of campgrounds and RV parks for people RVing in the USA. The app also shows truck stops, dump stations and RV services so you can easily find fuel and supplies.

For free RV camping , use the Campendium website to find no cost RV campsites. Free camping is a great way to save money and find more secluded locations.

However, most free campsites do not offer water, electric or sewer hook-ups, so you should be prepared to “rough it.” If you plan on dry camping or boondocking at free campsites, choose a rental RV that has a generator on board.

If you are planning an extended RV round trip, consider joining one or more RV membership clubs to enjoy discounted camping fees.

Buying Gear for your RV Road Trip

The last step in the planning process for an RV road trip is buying all the gear you need. Review our Amazon list of must have RV supplies and either buy them or verify that your rental RV comes equipped with the proper gear.

10 Best RV Road Trips in the USA

Olympic peninsula.

Driving highway 101 around the Olympic Peninsula is a short but sweet RV road trip. The complete Olympic Peninsula rod trip is just over 300 miles, so it can easily be completed in a few days.

On the other hand, there is so much to see in this region you could also stay for weeks. The main attraction on the Peninsula is Olympic National Park which features a lush rain forest, stunning mountain peaks, crystal clear lakes and the Pacific Coast.

There are plenty of RV campground options in the area. There are several private campgrounds just off highway 101 and there are 10 campgrounds in the National Park that can accommodate RVs.

Most National Park campsites are designed for RVs up to 21 feet long, and none of them accept rigs over 35 feet. If you plan to camp in the park, make sure to travel in a smaller RV.

While the National Park is the main feature, there are several other sights to see along this route. For incredible views, take a side trip to Cape Flattery, the most northwesterly tip of the contiguous 48 states.

To reach Cape Flattery, first head to the town of Neah Bay from highway 112. In Neah Bay, go as far west as you can, follow signs to Cape Flattery Road and head south. After 7.7 miles the road will take you to the trail head parking lot.

Don’t forget to stop in Neah Bay and purchase a Makah Recreation Pass , which is required to hike on the trail. The trail is an easy 1.5 mile round trip that winds through the forest and ends in stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.

Utah National Parks

Utah has five National Parks with jaw dropping scenery. Combining all five parks into a single road trip is an unforgettable adventure, and one of my personal favorite experiences RVing in the USA.

Start your adventure in Zion National Park then drive on Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands. Allot at least 2 days in each park to make sure you have ample time to hike and relax. Since most of the trails in National Parks are not pet-friendly, this is not a great RV road trip with dogs.

All of the Utah National Parks, except Canyonlands, have RV-friendly campgrounds that can be reserved in advance. Reservations are accepted 6 months ahead of time and should be made exactly 6 months in advance for summer reservations.

None of the NPS campgrounds offer electric hook-ups, so RVers looking for more comfort should stay in private campgrounds near the parks. Reservations for RV parks also need to be made at least six months in advance to guarantee availability.

Don’t forget to add a few Utah State parks into your road trip itinerary. Dead Horse Point State Park, located just outside of Canyonlands, offers dramatic views of the Colorado River and the pinnacles of Canyonlands.

This state park has two campgrounds with 30 and 50 amp electric outlets. An hour from Zion, Sand Hollow State Park is a great summer stop if you are looking to get in the water.

The main feature of this state park is a refreshing reservoir with boat rentals. Their Westside campground also offers spacious campsites with full hook-ups.

Route 66, also know as the Mother Road, is the most iconic and celebrated RVing route in the USA. Historic Route 66 covers over 2,400 miles, starting in Chicago and ending at Santa Monica, California.

For the classic experience, I would recommend sticking to the westernmost portion of the route. This area features many kitschy attractions that will take you back in time. Start your journey in Amarillo, TX and take Route 66 all the way to the Pacific Ocean in California.

There are many RV campgrounds along historical Route 66. Simply use the AllStays app to find campgrounds with good reviews at your desired stopping points.

State park campgrounds are a good option if you are looking to incorporate more outdoor adventures into your road trip. Consider camping at Santa Rosa Lake, Homolovi Ruins and Malibu Creek State Parks.

Hualapai Mountain Park, 11-miles off of the road in Arizona, offers a great break from the desert. The campground sits in the Hualapai Mountain Range, so you can enjoy views of the desert below from a cooler elevation.

You want to take your time driving down Route 66, so you have plenty of time to stop for roadside attractions and detours. Starting in Amarillo, check out the Cadillac Ranch, an art installation made using old Cadillac cars.

During your RV road trip, stop at the ghost town of Oatman, Arizona that has a friendly local population of wild burros.

California’s Pacific Coast

The Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) hugs the Pacific Coast of California for 650 miles. The route is best driven from north to south, so you are on the ocean side of the road for the entire drive.

This coastal road trip is not for the faint of heart. The route features winding turns, small shoulders and big drop offs. I would recommend this RV road trip for more experienced drivers not first time RVers. Drive slow and plan short days to keep this drive fun and safe.

There are several state park campgrounds and private RV parks available along Highway 1. Spend a few days at the San Francisco RV Resort just outside of the city. This resort is pricey, but it features stunning ocean views, full hook-ups and easy access to the city.

Also stop at Doheny State Beach campground in Dana Point. This campground does not have any hook-ups, but there are campsites available right on the beach.

One of the most iconic stops along the California Coast is Big Sur. Plan to spend at least a few days of your road trip exploring this area.

The hike to McWay Falls should definitely be on your travel and adventure bucket list. The trail is less than a mile, but the views are incredible. You can access the trail head directly off of Highway 1.

Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway stretches through the mountains from Afton, Virginia to Cherokee, North Carolina (my home state). This road is an iconic route for people RVing in the USA.

There are plenty of overlooks and the speed limit never exceeds 45 mile per hour, making for a leisurely RV road trip. The route has many sweeping curves, but is generally easy to drive without many tight turns. The vistas are stunning during the peak fall season when the leaves are changing, but be prepared for crowds during this time.

There are eight National Park Service Campgrounds on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Most of these campgrounds do not have hook-ups, but they offer potable water, bathrooms with flush toilets, picnic tables, fire rings and RV dump stations.

These campgrounds are open from May to October for a fee of $20 per night. If you are looking for higher-end accommodations, there a plenty of private RV parks a short drive off the parkway. Near Asheville, North Carolina, spend a night or two at the stunning mountaintop RV sites at Mama Gertie’s Hideaway Camp.

Views and hiking are the two main features of the Blue Ridge Parkway. One of our favorite hikes in the area is Crabtree Falls. The trail head is located at milepost 339.5.

There are two trail options: an easier 3 mile out and back hike on the same trail or a more strenuous 3.5 mile loop trail that climbs a ridge above the falls. The main feature of the hike is the 70 foot waterfall but there are also beautiful wildflowers in the early summer.

South Florida

If you are looking for a winter destination to RV in the USA, look no further than the Sunshine State. While many RVers park in one spot for the winter, a Florida road trip is a much better adventure.

I recommend starting your Florida road trip near Everglades National Park and driving down the Florida Keys.

Start your trip at the Miami Everglades RV Resort, a full hook-up RV park near the Everglades that offers amenities including a pool and game room. In the Keys, Sunshine Key RV Resort is another high-end RV park located right on the water.

For a more affordable camping option in the Keys, stay at Bahia Honda State Park which offers campsites with electric for $38 per night. Be sure to make your campground reservations six to twelve months in advance to avoid being stuck without a place to stay.

If you make it all the way to Key West, consider leaving your RV behind for the day to visit Dry Tortugas National Park. The park which is an island 70 miles west of Key West is only accessible by boat or seaplane.

Daily ferries shuttle visitors from Key West to the park, or you can arrive in style by flying in with Key West Seaplane Adventures. Once you arrive, you can spend the day swimming, snorkeling and exploring the 19th century fort.

Upper Peninsula of Michigan

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan (The U.P.) is a beautiful natural playground for campers RVing in the USA. Summer is the best time to visit when you can count on warm, pleasant weather.

The U.P. is accessed from I-75 on the lower peninsula of Michigan. From there, you can plan your own route around the U.P.

Straits State Park is a great place to start and end your U.P. RV road trip. Located right after the bridge onto the Upper Penninsula, the park has two campgrounds with electric hook-ups. From this location, you can easily access the ferry to car-free Mackinac Island.

Also consider staying at Indian Lake State Park which offers lake front campsites. There are also plenty of private campgrounds on the U.P. for the remainder of your road trip.

Just 10 minutes from Indian Lake State Park is The Big Spring ( Kitch-iti-kipi ) . The natural spring has crystal clear blue water that makes for a beautiful photo opportunity.

While you can’t swim in the spring, the park offers a self-operated observation raft that you can take out onto the water. Through observation windows on the raft floor, you can see trout swimming below. Also, don’t forget to eat a Pasty, a local meat pie delicacy.

Columbia River Gorge

The drive along the Columbia River Gorge is one of the most scenic drives in the Pacific Northwest. The gorge reaches heights of 4,000 feet, and the river serves as the boundary between Oregon and Washington.

I recommend starting in Troutdale, Oregon and driving on Interstate 84 to at least Hood River. This trip is a very short drive, but you can extend the trip by taking detours over the river to the Washington side.

This is a perfect first time RV road trip, allowing you to drive just 30 minutes between RV parks.

In Troutdale, stay at the Sandy Riverfront RV resort. This full hook-up campground offers direct access to the Sandy River where you can swim and float on hot summer days.

At the end of your trip, stay at the Blue Barn Grill & RV park on the Washington side of the river. In between, small RVs (20 feet max) can stay at the Eagle Creek campground within the National Scenic Area.

Even though the Columbia River Gorge is a short trip, it is not lacking in activities. There are stunning waterfalls, local breweries and hundreds of hiking trails to explore. One can’t miss hike along the gorge is Beacon Rock.

The trail is a one-mile hike up the 848 foot Beacon Rock, the core of an ancient volcano. The hike involves many switchbacks and steep drop-offs, but handrails make it safe for even casual hikers. At the top you are rewarded with vast views of the Columbia River Gorge.

Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon

If you are looking to incorporate both city life and the great outdoors into your RV road trip, consider driving from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. The drive from Las Vegas to the south rim is just over four hours, but you can spend a significant amount of time at each destination.

If you are renting an RV , you can take a round trip route so you can fly in and out of Las Vegas. Alternatively, this trip can be combined with a Utah National Park or Route 66 road trip for a longer adventure.

There are many large RV resorts around Las Vegas that offer pools, outdoor activities and shuttles to casinos. If you want to stay right on The Strip, camp at Circus Circus RV Park. The campground offers full hook-up sites on the Circus Circus property, and campers have access to all the same amenities as hotel guests.

Once you reach the Grand Canyon , stay at the Trailer Village campground which offers full hook-up RV sites close to the south rim of the canyon.

Don’t forget to stop along the way to the canyon and explore Arizona a little more. Stop in the town of Chloride for some history and culture. The old silver mining town now features some interesting art with many residents creating junk art sculptures on their property.

Just outside of town, park the RV and walk 1.5 up a rough dirt road to see the murals of Chloride miner, Roy Purcell. Painted in 1966, these murals are a sight to see, covering 2,000 square feet of rocks and granite.

North to Alaska

Once you have completed some shorter road trips RVing in the USA, consider upping your road trip game and driving to Alaska. Leaving from Washington state, you can drive through British Columbia and The Yukon to reach Alaska.

Allow an absolute minimum of one month for this RV road trip, so you have plenty of time for driving and exploring. Ideally, this RV road trip would take two to three months so you have plenty of time to explore Western Canada as well.

On the route to Alaska, you will find plenty of RV parks off the highway. The AllStays app will help you find campsites in the US, as well as Canada.

Once you arrive in Alaska, the whole state is your campground. Alaska is one of the few places in the USA where it is legal to camp almost anywhere. Check out Call to Wander’s post for some Alaska campsite recommendations.

Once you reach Alaska, be sure to make it to Denali National Park. The park features Denali, the highest peak in North America, as well as plentiful wildlife.

The only entrance to the park is 240 miles north of Anchorage off Alaska Highway 3. There are RV-friendly campgrounds within the park, so you can enjoy the experience of camping right beside the natural wonders.

10 Best Cross-Country Road Trip Routes in the US

The open road, blue skies, fresh air: a cross-country road trip may just be what you need to go somewhere new, spend some time by yourself or with your loved ones, and gain some perspective.

The great American road trip became popular in the 1950s, when there was a rapid increase in the number of families owning cars post-World War II.

With the recent changes in travel and diminished financial capacity, people are looking for different ways to explore new places. It definitely looks like driving cross-country will see a revival.

In this article, you’ll learn about the best routes to travel as well as tips and resources on how to plan a cross-country road trip that you (and your loved ones) will remember for years to come.

The 10 Best Cross-Country Road Trip Routes

These 5 routes are by no means the only ways to go on a cross-country road trip, but these are certainly popular and scenic.

The first three routes are coast-to-coast road trips, while the last two run north to south along the west and east coasts, respectively.

1. America’s Mother Road: Historic Route 66

Who Should Take This Route: Those who long for the nostalgia and romance of small-town America

Don’t mess with a classic.

Route 66 is the legendary cross-country road trip destination for tourists, not only Americans but also foreigners. The Pixar animated movie Cars is greatly responsible for sparking renewed interest in driving this road.

In the 1930s, it was the route of choice for workers who wanted to try their luck in the west, and later in the 1950s and 1960s, for vacationing families to go to the Grand Canyon and Disneyland.

As the road became more popular, tourist traps, motels, diners, gas stations, car repair shops, and other roadside attractions sprang up, earning Route 66 the moniker “Main Street of America.”

Sadly, it was decommissioned in 1985 as motorists favored using I-40; it can get them from one point to another much quicker.

Even though it’s officially decommissioned, more than 80% of the original route can still be driven today thanks to road maps and websites dedicated to reviving the route as well as the small towns and businesses along the road.

The “normal” direction to take this road trip is from east to west, but eastward is good if you want to go coast to coast.

That is, if you start from California and want to continue your trip to the east from Illinois all the way to Massachusetts, you can turn on US-20 from where Route 66 ends on Joliet Road in Countryside, Illinois (more details on US-20 below).

2. The Oregon Trail: US-20 Route

Who Should Take This Route: History buffs who love long drives and diverse sights

Historic Route 66 may be the more popular road, but US Route 20 is actually the longest road in the US, earning it the nickname “Big Daddy.”

Not only is it the longest, but US-20 also offers the most contrasting sights and sounds. From mountains, lakes, rivers, and beaches, to “frozen in time” small towns and the most modern urban cities.

Again, east to west is the popular way to go on this road trip, but starting from the west gives you a chance to go parallel to the path formed by the Oregon National Historic Trail , which was followed by pioneer families on wagons from Missouri to Oregon.

Summer (June to August) is the best time to travel this road, notwithstanding the weather and crowds. Most places are closed during the winter, as this trail lies mostly in northern states, and spring and fall mean unpredictable weather.

3. The Loneliest Road: US-50 Route

Who Should Take This Route: Those who love solitude

If you look forward to driving alone with nothing but nature around you, you will love driving US Route 50.

The “loneliest road in America” moniker applies to the section of US-50 that goes through Nevada from Ely to Carson City; there’s little more than mountains, skies, and endless desert to see on this 300-mile stretch of road.

Eventually, the entire US-50 became popular enough that Time Magazine featured it in the mid-90s, calling it the Backbone of America, as history, success, failure, and revival are all documented along this long and often winding road.

Portions of the US-50 route overlap with such historic trails as the Santa Fe Historic Trail as well as the Pony Express National Historic Trail.

Along the way, you’ll see towns that have flourished into cities, cities that have collapsed into ruins, and small towns that have bounced back from near-death.

The western end of US-50 lies in Sacramento, California, but if you want to make this a true blue coast-to-coast drive, drive another 100 miles to San Francisco via I-80.

Late spring (May to June) and autumn (September to October) are the best times to drive this route.

Keep in mind that you’re passing through some contrasting landscapes: mountains, deserts, lakes, and seas. Winter will be too cold and the roads may be too slippery for you to drive safely, while summer will be too hot when passing through the desert.

4. The Pacific Coast: US-101 Route to California State Route 1

Who Should Take This Route: Beach bums who like sunny weather, salty air, and breathtaking ocean sunsets

Taking a cross-country road trip along the Pacific Coast is one of the most scenic drives you’ll ever take.

Called Highway 101 in Washington and Oregon, and Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), California State Route 1 (SR1), or Highway 1 in California, this road takes you right beside the Pacific Ocean and the western border of the contiguous United States.

The I-5 eventually replaced the old US-101 as it passes more major cities and has less dangerous curves to navigate, but for natural beauty and ambiance, you can’t beat the US-101.

US-101 meets up with US-20 in Oregon, so if you want to go north from California to Oregon and then eastward from Oregon to Massachusetts, you can have a west coast road trip and then a coast-to-coast one.

5. The Atlantic Coast: I-95 Route

Who Should Take This Route: Tourists who appreciate all types of scenery, from New England’s historic architecture to Florida’s tropical charm

The west coast is gorgeous, but don’t write out the east coast just yet.

Interstate 95 is the longest north-to-south interstate highway that runs parallel to the Atlantic Ocean.

Driving a cross-country road trip along the I-95 takes you from historic towns to glamorous cities, from wetlands to forests to beaches.

Beaches are best appreciated in the summer, but any weather is good for taking a road trip through I-95. Winter may mean snowfall in the northern states on this route, while spring and fall give you mild weather and less crowded beaches.

6. TransAmerica Trail

An east-to-west, off-road adventure trail, which lets you take in the scenic beauty of the East Coast to the West Coast while taking you off major highways to discover hidden attractions.

Who Should Take This Route: If you’re a history buff, this road trip takes you to the path pioneers and early settlers followed.

Here are some interesting stops along the TransAmerica Trail:

• Virginia/North Carolina : Pass by Blue Ridge Parkway – one of the most scenic roads in the country with breathtaking views of the Appalachian Mountains.
• Kentucky : Stop by Berea, the heart of Appalachia, for cool arts and crafts mementos. If you have a day or two for this stop, you can explore the world’s longest cave system in Mammoth Cave National Park.
• Missouri : Visit the Gateway Arch and explore St. Louis’ rich history.
• Oklahoma : See American bison at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and explore the rugged landscapes of the southern Great Plains.
• New Mexico : Discover the art and culture of the historic Taos nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
• Colorado : Be in awe of the tallest dunes in North America at Great Sand Dunes National Park, then visit the charming Telluride mountain town for a laidback stop.
• Oregon : Once you reach the Pacific Coast, you can explore the stunning coastline and visit towns like Astoria, Cannon Beach, and Newport.

7. The Great Northern Road: US-2 Route

The Great Northern Road follows the US-2 Route. It stretches from the northernmost border with Canada to the Pacific Ocean on the West Coast.

Who Should Take This Route: A coast-to-coast road trip through the northern states, which is perfect to embark in during the summer or for people who love visiting charming small towns.

The Great Northern Road offers numerous opportunities to visit rugged parks like the Acadia in Maine or White Mountains in New Hampshire, the lakeside cities of Vermont, and the always-amazing Niagara Falls.

There are also cultural spots in Missoula (Montana), Spokane (Washington), and Michigan’s Mackinac Island.

I recommend you end your Great Northern Road trip at Seattle.

Tips For Planning A Cross-Country Road Trip

Driving across the country is great fun, but there are plenty of things and factors to consider when planning. Here are some of them so you can arrange a road trip with no hassle.

Make sure your vehicle is roadworthy. Have everything checked: fluid levels, brakes, tires, lights, drive belts, etc.

Also, make sure you have jumper cables, spare tires, a tire jack, and everything else you need in case of car trouble.

Have a plan, but don’t have a plan. Sounds confusing, but the point is to have a general plan for how many days you want to take, what to do per day (sights and places you can’t miss versus those who want to see but can skip), how many hours you’ll drive, and where you’ll stay per night.

Beyond that, booking hotels and making restaurant reservations way in advance may not be a good idea. You’ll want to have some flexibility in your schedule to make room for emergencies and side trips and detours.

Sign up for emergency roadside services. If you’re not already a member of AAA or any other reputable roadside assistance service, join one before your road trip.

Prepare for areas that don’t have mobile service. Camping in the middle of nowhere? Chances are you won’t have a cellphone signal. If your plan is heavily dependent on having an internet connection, you’re asking for trouble.

Download your maps on your smartphone beforehand or use paper road maps. Take a GPS navigation tool that’s not dependent on a mobile signal.

The perfect itinerary for an epic USA roadtrip (48 states at once)

Do you like roadtrips? They happen to be a very American tradition and we found the perfect itinerary to visit every state in the continental USA during 1 epic roadtrip. A great trip idea for those who have a lot of time but want to stay closer to home .

Personally, I love roadtrips and I hit the road as much as I can, despite also being an aviation geek: you can like both, right? What matters is traveling and seeing new places , no matter how.

So here are the maps and details of the 2 itineraries that allow you to see all the lower 48 states at once, depending on your travel preference.

Basics of the 2 epic USA roadtrip itineraries

The USA is a huge country, almost as big as Europe (it’s even larger than Canada when considering land area alone).

So the USA has a lot of variety in terms of landscapes, but even in terms of culture too (even if many who aren’t from the country don’t realize that).

If you aim to eventually visit every state, any 1 of these 2 itineraries is a great way to almost all of them at once. The only 2 states you’ll have left to visit after this roadtrip will be Hawaii and Alaska.

There’s a version for national parks and points of interest and a version for cities.

I’m on the quest to visit all 50 states myself (in addition to also visiting every country obviously), and I’m not doing too bad with 47 already.

But let’s just say it would’ve been much quicker to get to 48 at once with this roadtrip instead of having to do it over dozens of trips.

48-state roadtrip – national parks/points of interest version

Here’s a map of the 1 st itinerary.

It was conceived by American Ph.D. student Randy Olson, on  his blog , and it was done scientifically to optimize the routing: each stop represents a national park or a point of interest.

So you’re not just seeing every state, you’re seeing cool parts of every state (which sadly wasn’t our case in North Dakota during our very random 1200-miles-nonstop-in-2-days Flytrippers roadtrip across the Midwest just for fun).

Good times. Roadtrips always make for great stories.

Anyway, the itinerary has also been optimized to be as efficient a route as possible to see all 48 states, so you can rest assured you won’t be wasting any time.

If you only stop to sleep, you can complete this roadtrip in only 9 days, but we recommend taking at least a couple of weeks to explore all these places obviously.

And gas is significantly cheaper in the US in case you were wondering. You can start anywhere, it’s a continuous loop, and it passes through many spots near the Canadian border.

You can even take a shortcut from Michigan to Vermont through Canada, as the stop in Cleveland is only to keep Americans without a passport from crossing into the Great White North.

These are all very enticing attractions, for the most part. It seems I’ve only seen 14 of those, so maybe I should hit the road again after all.

48-state roadtrip – city version

Here’s a map of the 2 nd itinerary.

If you’re more of a city slicker, the map’s author has created a 2 nd version that routes you through amazing cities instead.

It is slightly shorter but quite as impressive: it makes you go through the “Best City to Visit” in each state, according to TripAdvisor .

But you won’t have all the lower 48 states, unlike the other itinerary. That’s because no city in Vermont, West Virginia, or North Dakota made the top 400 cities to visit ranking, unfortunately. So plan on making a few extra detours if you want to hit all states at once with this version of the itinerary.

Hello Andrew, the PHD student suggests in the 1st Itinnerary that the one stop to make in Washington State is the Hanford Nuclear Reservation?! Flat out, that is a terrible idea. It is in the middle of nowhere, I am just shocked it’s mentioned. Out of all the beautiful and amazing places to see in such a diverse state as Washington, a Nuclear Site was chosen? Surely this student could have done so much better. Thank you for allowing comments.

Having been all around the Olympic Peninsula, I agree that’s there are better stops. But my understanding is that he really optimized for the quickest way to do all 48 and had to choose a point of interest that wasn’t too far off that optimal path, hence that choice (I think).

There is no stop in North Dakota on the city version. You should stop in Fargo after Billings and before Sioux Falls

“this roadtrip in only 9 days“ is extremely false statement. It is only 9 days if you are driving non stop, no breaks to even get out of your car, get gas, or actually see these places. From start to finish drive time it is 225 hours, 16 minutes = 9 days. Wow. Take some time to enjoy the view.

Hi! It is 13,699 miles (22,046 km) for the landmarks itinerary and 12,290 miles (19,780 km) for the city version. You can even have the Google Maps links on the creator’s original post (I’ve reposted the link below). Crappy itinerary! Does not even include Zion National Park… and so many stops in the North Eastern states?? Nobody cares about those places except maybe a couple of places.

As explained, the PhD student who built the itinerary wanted to have one stop per state, and there are many states in the North-East so that’s why there are many stops there. I agree that Zion is an iconic spot, but his goal was also to optimize a routing that was as short as possible so that’s why it’s billed as an itinerary to see all lower 48 states at once and not an itinerary to see *the best spots*. But those interested in doing this can definitely adapt it and add many interesting stops for sure 🙂

You don’t need to cram a whole 48-state road trip into 2 weeks. These 2 week road trip ideas highlight the best of different parts of the USA.   

West Coast America Road Trip: California, Highway 101

This west coast USA road trip is definitely a classic road trip option as the Californian highway is peppered with lovely towns with views of the Pacific Coast. Typically planning a California 2 week road trip, USA, along Highway 101 calls for driving from San Francisco to San Diego (or the reverse) and has several stops along the way.

Of course, it’s your 2 week US road trip so hit whatever stops interest you, but here are a few destinations suggestions for your west coast of USA road trip.

• Start your road trip adventures in San Francisco and take a tour of the city highlights along with a stop at Alcatraz . 
• Head to Santa Cruz and stop at the amusement park, Beach Boardwalk .

Chicago to Los Angeles Road Trip, Route 66

This stretch is a historic route and one of the most famous trips around America. Route 66 deserves a try if you want to drive part way across the country on a 2 week cross country RV trip.

• Start your USA road trip planning in Chicago (or you could end here if you choose). It allows you to visit one of the many museums, such as the Art Institute of Chicago .

Southern USA Road Trip: Savannah to San Diego

Heading from coast to coast can be one of the USA best road trips as you get a glimpse of what each state offers.

• Then stop Atlanta for a 1.5-hour highlight tour of this capital city .

If you have ever considered a road trip across America, you’ll have asked yourself “how much does it cost to drive cross country?” and considered the cross country road trip cost .

If you don’t have a vehicle at your disposal, you’ll need to rent one. It’s practically impossible to rent a car in the US for less than $40/day and it’s really hard to find a deal for an RV for under $100/night. So this will affect your road trip America cost – but it is a necessary expense.

Add in spending on gas, accommodation, food, etc and your cost of cross country road trip will quickly add up , making what seemed like a great vacation idea seem like a rather expensive getaway.

We’re always crunching numbers and asking ourselves, “how much does it cost to travel around the world?” But we really had no idea of the road trip across America cost!

Planning for our trip, we knew that sticking to a small daily budget was going to be tough, but we wanted to see if we could keep our road trip across America cost to $125/day for two people (Spoiler: we almost did!).

How Long Does it Take to Drive Across America?

It is totally up to you to decide how long does it take to drive across the US. Each of the road trip routes we have suggested can be completed comfortably in two weeks . However, there are innumerable things to do along the way and the States is a big country so you can take as long as you like.

We met people who had been on the road for years, making their way slowly across the country. So, as you can imagine, there are no hard and fast rules to answering how long does it take to drive across America – the decision is up to you!

But how long does it take to drive across America non-stop anyway? If you weren’t in it for the journey and were just trying to zoom from coast to coast as quickly as possible, you could do it in 35-45 hours. Some people even take it a step further and take on the 48 states in 10 days route . This is a surefire way to check off tons of states on your list but we much prefer to enjoy the journey as much as the end destination.

Is it Safe to Drive Across America?

Of course! Always be sure to educate yourself on state driving laws while following the speed limit and being aware of your surroundings. There are A LOT of large transport trucks on American highways so be mindful of passing etiquette and you’ll be good to go.

Cross-Country Road Trip Cost

Here is a detailed breakdown of our cross-country road trip cost to help you answer the question of “how much does it cost to drive across the country?” It is based on our 16 days 3,000 mile/4,500kms road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles .

If you are wondering “How much does it cost to drive across the country?” the first thing to consider is the cost of driving itself. 

The cost of driving from Chicago to Los Angeles was by far the biggest percentage of our overall USA road trip budget . We knew that we had to find a cheap way to get around or this USA road trip ideas would quickly be thrown out the window.

RV Rental – $610 ($38/day)

Luckily, we were able to use some of the tips and tricks we learned while traveling around Australia to determine how much it would cost to travel across America. Then apply them to help our 2 week cross country RV trip cost in the US.  

We were lucky to have been able to find a GREAT DEAL for a campervan rental at just $39/night.

While it wasn’t as good as $1/day, the deal offered us a longer rental, giving us more time on the road , and a brand new (hence the factory relocation) massive RV for our cross-country road trip. It was big enough for 7 people, so having all the space for just 2 of us felt like absolute luxury. 

The total for 16 days/15 nights added up to $610 of our cross country road trip cost.

Fuel – $682 ($42/day)

Gas ended up costing a bit more than we would’ve liked on our 2 week road trip across America, adding up to almost 30% of our total travel budget . With 3,000 miles (around 4,500 km) ahead of us on our 2-week road trip, we knew that we’d need around 6 tanks of gas to get us from Chicago to Los Angeles , but we underestimated the cost of gas across the country and our RV’s efficiency on the road. How much does a cross country road trip cost? More than we thought as far as fuel was concerned.

Propane = $60 ($4/day)

When budgeting for our trip, we completely forgot to account for the cost of propane . It didn’t add up to a lot, which was surprising considering that the stove, fridge, furnace, and water heater in our RV were all powered by propane. All things considered, it was a small drop in a big bucket but should be accounted for if you’re the designated road trip USA planner.

Accommodation Costs = $179 ($12/day)

Despite the fact that our RV was completely self-sustainable (it was equipped with a shower, toilet, and a full-size kitchen), we weren’t able to spend more than 2-3 days away from an RV park during our trip.

To our greatest surprise, RV parks in the US weren’t as cheap as we expected. We planned on spending $10-15/night for a powered site, but in reality, we never found anything for less than $30/night. It was yet another thing that added more than we thought to our United States road trip cost.

On nights when we didn’t need to be plugged in, we followed seasoned RV’ers advice and parked in Walmart parking lots or enjoyed being away from it all by finding an isolated spot in the middle of a forest road just off of our trip routes.

Food Costs = $339 ($21/day)

To keep our cross country road trip cost down, we choose not to eat out on this trip and cooked most of our meals in the RV . But we didn’t deprive ourselves.

We stocked up on fresh fruits and veggies, good quality meats, and nutrient-rich ingredients. Let’s face it, American groceries tend to be a bit more expensive than what we had been used to in Costa Rica so we had to keep our food expenses in check. Since our American road trip budget didn’t allow for daily meals out, we made sure to cook up a storm and make a big deal out of our meals.

We drank wine, enjoyed some beers, and even splurged on desserts! Needless to say, we weren’t starving throughout our trip and our food and drinks expenses reflected that.

Cost of Supplies

Rv supplies – $292 ($18/day).

It cost us a few hundred dollars to stock up on various supplies for the RV . There were a few road trip accessories that we can’t believe we didn’t think of before our trip and some bedding and kitchen supplies.  

Cruise America offers to rent bedding and crockery to guests for their USA road trips but we figured that we could find much better quality stuff if we were to buy it ourselves for our 2 week cross country RV trip. And we did!

At the end of the trip, we took all the supplies up to Oksana’s parent’s house in Canada. One day, we’ll dig them up from storage in the basement and use them for another drive across America! 

How much does a road trip cost? A lot less when you already have the supplies from a previous trip!

Mobile Phone – $60 ($4/day)

To stay connected on the road we purchased a 30-day 10GB mobile data plan from T-Mobile for $60 . It was a pricey investment and one that we completely forgot to account for at the beginning of planning a road trip across the States, but being able to stay connected and keep up with our work while on the road warranted the expense. 

A great alternative, which we didn’t know about it at the time, would have been a Solis Hotspot . Solis Hotspot offers flexible data plans , including Unlimited Data plans for heavy users or a Pay Per Use plan at just $9/1GB ideal for someone who just wants to stay connected and keep up with emails/messages or spends hours on social media while on this trip.

Cost of Activities – $160 ($10/day)

We didn’t spend a ton of money on activities throughout our road trip across America . Cost was factored into many of the things we did. 

We splurged on a Cog Railway ticket to the top of Pikes Peak, because hiking up the mountain wasn’t an option in my condition , and our 30 foot RV wouldn’t have made it up the winding roads either. Luckily, it was a great journey and money well spent.

National Parks Pass – $80

Another expense that we incurred on the trip was the cost of a yearly National Parks Pass ($80) . We got lucky with our timing as the first week of our trip coincided with the Annual National Parks Week , which gave us access to all National Parks across the country for free.

But by the time we got down to Arizona and California, the deal was off and the steep price at the Grand Canyon and at the Joshua Tree National Park made the $80 we paid for the pass completely worth it.

We think that $80 for an annual park’s pass was very reasonable. Especially considering they were some of the highlights of our American road trip. You can pre-purchase your National Park’s Pass here .

2 Week Road Trip USA – Total Cost – $2,382 ($149/day)

Our road trip across America cost us $2,382, or an average of $149/day between both of us for a 16-day road trip across the US. 

It’s more than the $125/day that we planned on for our USA road trip budget, but we’re not kicking ourselves for it. Our estimate for how much would it cost to travel across America was a bit off, but we had a great experience despite a bit of increased road trip cost.

Looking back on our spending patterns, we realized that the biggest cost drivers were RV rental and gas . And while it might be possible to reduce the daily gas costs by staying on the road for longer and spreading the cost of gas over more days, the increase in daily RV rental would probably offset that.

How to Save on USA Road Trips

American road trips USA can take its toll on the environment but there are ways to minimize its effects. Not to mention, we tend to find that the more eco-friendly a trip is the more cost-effective trip too!

• Choose a hybrid model or energy-efficient vehicle whenever possible.
• If you’re driving your own car or an RV get it serviced prior to your USA road trip. Your RV or car rental agency will do this for you but you can still check your oil and tire pressure regularly while you’re on the road for better fuel efficiency.

• When it’s hot out roll down the windows instead of using A/C for better fuel economy.
• Choose eco-friendly accommodation options , and restaurants while on the road. Try camping or staying in national parks like we did, and shopping for food at local farmers markets.  
• Avoid single-use plastics and minimize packaging by using reusable grocery bags and collapsible containers when you need to restock food and refreshments. 
• Don’t forget to invest in a good reusable water bottle.
• Bring your friends! It’s always better to travel with a full car or RV. A five-person vehicle is so much more eco-friendly and cost-effective than traveling with a couple of two-seaters.

Excellent article. I was wondering what it was costing you to travel around. I know in New Zealand I got a great deal on Toyota Space Wagon and it was very cheap. Obviously your RV was much larger and better equipped but it’s still fairly expensive it would seem.

We never paid for RV parks or stuff either, we used to sneak into hostels and use their showers (I was young and on a budget so forgive me)!

But I remember the freedom of travelling around in the car and the complete freedom was an amazing feeling. I have been wondering how a road trip across America would compare to my recent trips to Uzbekistan and other more average priced destinations. It seems that the price is comparable if there are two people travelling.

We know we didn’t get the best deal on the campervan itself, so that’s a cost we can improve on, but the rest of it really just comes down to the price of gas and groceries. That’s really where the bulk of the costs comes from. Also, if you don’t have a large RV with a toilet and/or shower and don’t need to dump gray/black water, then there is really no need to stay in RV parks in the US either. There are tons of truck stops along the highways where you can actually shower and use the toilet for free or for next to nothing. Unfortunately, that wasn’t an option for us. At least not with this RV.

Thanks for sharing! I would love to do a road trip across the US in the next few years, and may look at doing an RV. My husband and I are doing a short RV trip from Darwin, Australia in a few weeks, and we learnt that it’s definitely not cheap – especially when we didn’t want to use Wicked, plus needed a guaranteed Auto. (Luckily as a travel blogger I managed to get a good discount!)

We found Apollo to be great in that part of Australia. They had some great $1/day deals from Darwin to Perth when we looked into it. If you end up doing more road trips in US or in Australia, look into Imoova – great rates on relocations in both Australia and the US.

My friend told me about how RV’ing is a huge culture down in the United States, and that it is quite common to park at Walmart parking lots overnight to reduce costs. I thought he was just kidding about that, but you have confirmed that it is not the case. I would have assumed you would get ticketed or towed if you did that.

Also, you can overnight at some large truck stops, some casinos, and our state parks and national parks are very reasonably priced, but some of the more popular ones are reserved up to a year ahead. For self-contained (no hook up)/boondock/’dispersed’ camp sites, there are many free places in the western part of the country–BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and COE (Corps of Engineers). Campendium is a good resource to find these.There are also apps where you can find pump outs and potable water to refill your tanks, without staying in an expensive RV park.

Nice post. So its cost you close to 2400US dollars for the travel. You guys really have a huge budget for the journey.

We usually travel on a budget of $100/day between both of us, which isn’t that high at all! On this trip, we went a bit over budget, which sometimes happens. Luckily, we are able to offset more expensive trips like this one with cheaper destinations and make sure that we stick to our $100/day budget on average for the year!

Sounds wonderful! We have recently retired and are really wanting to travel west, being from Illinois, but we always thought the RV would be way out of our budget. But, when you consider hotel rooms and restaurants in a car(even a fuel efficient one like ours), the RV rental makes a lot of sense. I always see them parked at Wal-Mart’s and truck stops. One question? Can we make it to Los Angeles, up the Pacific Coast Highway, Yosemite and back to Illinois on Hwy 80 in 2 weeks?

@SALLY Miller : I don’t see why not ,but here’s the thing , why would you want to put yourself in time constraints ? Taking you on that trip is about 5300 miles dividing that into 14 days is about 350 miles a day, taking you to Portland Or. and back. I’d try to take more time if it were me .

Did you ever drive and stay in the cities at that RV? Is that possible to go through Chicago by the way?

We mostly stayed in National Parks or in designated RV sites. There were some in the cities, but we did not stay in Chicago. We started our trip just outside of Chicago, so we did not need to drive through the city. But, there is no reason why you would not be able to go on the highway with your RV.

I am amazed and excited to read about your journey. It would help me a lot in planning my trips. You missed my country Pakistan. I suggest that you should explore the cultural city of Lahore and Northern Pakistan. Let me know if I can be on any help.

Just read your post on your drive across America from Chicago to LA. I have been wanting to take my family on a cross country trip for along time. I was just looking at RV rentals and chose Cruise America like the one you used. What am I missing? A standard RV rental for cross country trip both ways from GA to CA is over $4000 even with a 50% off promo code. You don’t just have to pay for the rental, you have to pay for mileage also. I was expecting a cross country budget for my family of 6 (me, my wife, and 4 daughters all under 9 years) to be around $5K-6K . The cost of RV rental would almost double that budget estimate and puts this trip out of reach. How did you rent an RV for 16 days for $600+?

Hi Will, we mention our “trick” in the article a bit. We found a great relocation deal for our road trip. These are quite common and are offered by many RV providers, but they do require you to be somewhat flexible with your dates and sometimes even destinations. A relocation deal is a special discount offered on one-way rentals when the rental company really needs to get an RV from one destination to another. Instead of hiring a worker to drive the RV to the desired destination, they put the vehicle up for rent, specifying the dates and route that needs to be taken. It’s worth looking through the deals if you have flexibility. Good luck with your search!

Hi Dario, yes regular price for an RV will be much higher. We got ours through a relocation deal. It was a one-way rental deal with a particular route and for specific dates. Check their relocation deals and see what they might have on offer right now. Keep in mind that you will need to stay flexible with dates and route if you want to score a deal like we did.

I have an interesting situation. Our leased car has 7000 miles left over due to lock down. So only gas cost is there. It is a suv large size very comfortable but gas consumption will be high. Your suggestion of national park tickets in membership is a good one.. thanks for your tips. If you had included Things not to miss would have been great.

Cross-Country RVing? 15 Helpful Tips When Planning

I’ve always dreamed of RVing across America and while I haven’t explored the entire continent yet, I have been to many states in the northeast, the south, and the west.

I’ve also made it up to Canada one year and that gave me the opportunity to cross through even more states.

When traveling across America in an RV, there are many things you need to plan for.

In this post, I’ll tell you some of the things you should know when planning out your trip.

Before we start, make sure you have read our tips for new RVers , it will be useful if you set out to cross the country!

Travel Time Is Always Longer Than You Think It Will Be

While planning out your route, you’ll probably look at Google Maps to see how long it will take to move from place to place.  This is extremely helpful and it’s a great place to start but it doesn’t always tell the whole story.

For starters, Google can’t accurately predict whether or not there will be an accident on the highway you’ll be traveling on two weeks from now.

One accident could potentially add several hours to just one day of driving.  Travel through all of America and you’ll most certainly end up being stuck in a multitude of accident-related traffic.

Mapping software can’t predict the weather or road closures either.

For example, what if you plan on driving on an interstate that ends up getting shut down due to a terrible tornado, blizzard, or earthquake?

This could add an entire day of traveling to your trip.

Finally, mapping software works by looking at the speed limits on the roads you’ll travel through.  Unfortunately, you probably won’t be able to go these speeds.

This is especially true for high ways with high speeds.  Legally you shouldn’t be traveling more than 55 miles per hour while towing a camper and you really shouldn’t drive much faster than that in a large motorhome either.

This means that you’ll be driving slower than the mapping software estimates so you know that even under perfect conditions you’ll end up completing your trip more slowly than estimated.

Many Campgrounds Need to Be Booked in Advance

You won’t always be able to just show up to a resort or state park and get a campsite.

This is especially true during holidays and peak seasons.  For this reason, whenever possible you may want to book your stays in advance.  However, this doesn’t mean you need to show up on time, every time.

If the weather gets bad or you’re just too tired to finish the drive, give the campground a call and let them know that you’ll be showing up late.   You may lose a little bit of money but you’ll show up to your destination safely.

Another thought to keep in mind is that peak season might be different depending on the location you’re heading to.  For example, many people head to Florida when the weather starts to get cold.  In this case, you may find it harder to find a campsite in Florida in the fall or winter.

On the other hand, many people head north in the summer.

This means that you may find it harder to find a campsite in Maine in the summer.

What all of this means is that you may have to book your stay during peak seasons even earlier than you would have to during other times of the year.

In fact, I’ve actually seen some campgrounds and state parks that will take reservations up to 120 days in advance.

Cultures Can Vary Dramatically

People traveling from the United States to South America are usually insightful enough to know that the culture in Argentina will likely be much different than it is in New Jersey.

What many Americans fail to realize however is that the culture within the United States can vary almost just as dramatically.

Sure, we all speak the same language and use the same currency but our local dialects, customs, interests, and eating habits can often be strikingly different.

For example, if you’re from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and you ask for a hoagie in Ohio, they may not have any idea what you’re talking about.  (For you people from Ohio, we call our subs hoagies.)

If you’re from St. Paul Minnesota, you may not understand the accent of a man from a rural part of Georgia.

The way you dress might make you look out of place as well.  Southerners tend to wear bright colors while New Yorkers tend to dress monochromatically.  The political climate may vary dramatically as well.  Someone from a blue state might be surprised by the opinions of someone from a red state (and vise versa).

What this all means is that you need to keep an open mind while traveling across the country and be prepared to try new things and meet new people.

This is true within the United States and it is even truer throughout the American continent.

Natural Hazards and Weather Conditions Can Vary

People from southern California are very familiar with wildfires, landslides, and earthquakes.

They know what to do when these events occur and they plan accordingly.  The problem arises when these people head to places like Massachusetts in the winter.  In places like Boston, you aren’t likely to see wildfires, landslides, and earthquakes but you are likely to get stuck in the snow.

Bostoners will know how to drive in the snow but someone from Los Angelos might not.

When you’re traveling over great distances, you have to be prepared for the weather conditions of each state you travel through.  Luckily, this information is readily available online and many of the preparations you’d take for one type of emergency will apply to other types of emergencies.

For example, it is a good idea to always have three days worth of food and water in your vehicle.

This rule will get you through being stuck in your RV during a blizzard and it will get you through being stuck somewhere because of a landslide.

You’re Going to Need to Stop for Maintenance

The average person might put 10,000 miles on their vehicle at most.

This means they might only have to do two or three oil changes each year.

People traveling across the country in a short amount of time can put many more miles on each year. 

As a result of heavy usage, you may have to stop to change the oil and rotate the tires on your motorhome every single month.  You may also have to get new brake pads and replace other consumables on your motorhome on a regular basis.

Additional maintenance is especially prevalent for tow vehicles.  This is because your tow vehicle is braking for two so its brake pads will get worn out more quickly.

Also, the tow vehicle has much more stress on it when it is towing so you may find it needs to be repaired more often.

You May Need to Rest More Than You Think

Do you know that feeling when you come back from a vacation and you feel more tired than you did before you left?  Well, this is the feeling you’ll experience if you do not take time to rest while traveling.

While you may or may not be working a job while on the road, you will be expending a lot of energy.

Planning, driving, seeing new sites, and even meeting new people can tire you out.

Not only this, but you’ll probably be physically exerting yourself more often when out on the road.  Sightseeing, biking, and hiking are all fun but exhausting activities.

Even changing time zones can make you more tired than you usually are.

On top of this, dealing with different climates and even different allergens in different parts of the country can tire you out fast.  Make sure you schedule in some rest time on your trip so that you don’t wear yourself out.

After all, how can you enjoy your trip if you’re constantly tired and run down?

Yearly Passes Can Save You a Lot of Money

Staying at campgrounds and even state parks can end up costing you a lot of money.  An overnight stay with full hookups can cost up to $50.00 in a state park and over $100.00 at a resort-style campground.

Even if you stay at campgrounds with electric-only sites, you’ll still end up spending about $30.00 a night.

This might not sound like a lot but it totals out to almost $11,000.00 in a year. 

Even without plumbing, you’ll end up paying over $900.00 a month just to park.  I’ve rented two bedroom apartments in nice neighborhoods for less than this.

This being said, you can stay at resorts at a huge discount just by buying a yearly pass.  Many campground associations and resorts have RV parks throughout the country.

For one modest fee, you can gain free access to all of them.  Spend a $1,000.00 on a yearly pass and you may end up with free parking for the entire year.

This averages out to less than $100.00 a month and you’re staying at resorts and nice campgrounds each night!

Other yearly passes can be even less expensive.  For instance, membership sites like Harvest Hosts are only $79.00 a year and they give you access to free camping at 417 wineries, 200 farms, 123 museums, and 315 golf courses.

Stay at Harvest Host sites only and you’ll end up spending less than $7.00 a month on parking.

Fuel Isn’t Always Available

Do you drive a diesel motorhome or tow vehicle?

If so, you may not be able to get fuel for your rig in some areas.  This means that you’ll have to carefully map out your destinations to ensure that you always have enough fuel to get to the next gas station.

Even if you don’t drive a diesel vehicle, you may still run into trouble from time to time.  This is because not all gas stations are large enough to accommodate large RVs.  For this reason, you may want to carry a gas can with you for emergencies.

This way, if you end up at a gas station that you can’t get your RV into, you can always fill up the gas can and then fill your RV up using that.

You wouldn’t want to fill your entire tank up this way, but it will help you put enough fuel into your RV to get to a gas station that you can fit your RV into.

Not All Campsites Are Pet-Friendly

Sometimes pet owners forget that their pets aren’t always welcome everywhere.

While there are plenty of parks and campgrounds that are pet-friendly, there are some that are not.  For this reason, dog and cat owners should always call ahead to find out whether or not they are allowed to bring their pets with them.

Even if you can bring your pet, you might want to decide whether or not you’d really like to go to a particular campground with your pet.

For example, you may plan on visiting an area that has two pet-friendly campgrounds.

One campground is really great for people and while it is pet-friendly it does not have a dog park or a place to easily walk dogs.  The other campground might have a dog park, dog sitting services, and many places for you to take your dog.  In this case, which one would you choose?

Batteries Shouldn’t Be Drained As Far As You Might Think

If you read our guide on camper batteries , you should already know those camper batteries should not be drained past a certain point.

Unfortunately, you won’t always be able to get your batteries charged while out on the road.

For this reason, you’ll want to make sure you monitor your batteries and stop at sites with electricity before your batteries are discharged lower than the manufacturer’s recommendations.

People who plan on doing a lot of boondocking or primitive camping with their RVs might want to consider adding additional batteries to their system.

In fact, it might even be a good idea to add a solar panel or two to give yourself some additional off-grid power.

Some Resorts Have Camper Restrictions

Did you know that some resorts will prohibit you from staying just because you’re driving an older RV?  On top of this, some campgrounds will have restrictions on what types of campers you can bring into the campground.

For instance, you may not be able to bring a truck camper into some resorts.

I’ve even seen some campgrounds that prohibit RVs that do not have their own bathroom facilities.  *In most cases, you can get around this rule simply by bringing along a small camping cassette toilet .

In most campgrounds, the restrictions are more practical and obvious.

For example, some state and national parks have campsites that can only fit campers that are smaller than 30 feet long.  In this case, they are restricting you and your RV because you simply can’t fit.

You Can’t Always Get the Internet

Some places just aren’t conducive to providing access to the Internet.

These places might be in remote areas or they may be in an area that is somehow shielded from towers and devoid of wiring.  If you plan on working while on the road, you may have to choose destinations where you know you’ll have easy access to the Internet.

You can do this by choosing campgrounds that have Internet access within them or you can choose a place that is close to a coffee shop or some other locality that offers wifi.

If you’re boondocking, you may have to upgrade your access equipment. Go here for tips on boondocking long-term .

For example, you could add a range extender to your RV so that you’ll be able to pick up tower signals from further away.

You May Not Always Have Access to Your Cell Phone

Some cell phone companies just don’t provide good service in certain areas.  For example, AT&T’s coverage map shows a lot of places out west where it cannot provide service.

Other companies have similar coverage issues in different areas.  If being able to use your cell phone is of vital importance, you may want to consider changing phone plans.

Even if you do have coverage, you may not be able to use it.

Did you know that there is a town in the United States that has banned the use of cell phones?  The town goes by the name of Green Bank and it is in West Virginia.

They ban cell phones because cell phones interfere with the Green Bank Telescope .  Travel through this area and your cell phone simply won’t work.

Final Thoughts

You’ll never be able to plan for every issue that might come up but you can prepare for most of them.

Spend time thinking about what your particular needs will be while out on the road and make sure that you’ll be able to meet these needs no matter what happens.

This will make your trip a safe and fun experience that you’ll be able to remember forever.

Take Back Roads

Seeking authentic travel experiences, one back road at a time, how to take a cross country road trip for less than $100.

The ability to take a cheap cross country road trip seems nearly impossible, especially with the price of gas these days.  Budget travel is always a challenge, and taking a drive across the country can’t be realistic, can it?  The cost of gas, food, lodging, souvenirs, maintenance, and other unexpected expenses can destroy even the heaviest wallet…

I’m going to own up to the slight deception in the title of this blog.  No, I did not complete a cross country road trip for a grand total of less than $100 – that truly is impossible.  Even with a hybrid vehicle in the car, the cost of gas would push the price over $100 pretty quickly.

So what did I mean by leading you on?

What we WERE able to do was to drive cross country for less than $100  in overnight accommodations expenses…. In other words, we spent less than $100 – for both Dirk and I – to lay our heads down every night on our cross country road trip.

We spent exactly $86 total for nine nights of lodging.

The cost of gas, supplies, and souvenirs was about $300-400 each.  We cooked almost all of our breakfasts and dinners.  So other than what we spent eating lunches in local restaurants, our food didn’t cost any more than what we would’ve spent at home.  Our flights out west to start the trip were about $200 each.  The car was already waiting in Reno for our arrival.  And this does not include the expense of other supplies that we already owned that made the journey possible.  So, that still begs the question…

How to take a cheap Cross Country Road Trip

The answer is simple – so simple it almost defies logic.  But first, a bit of background about this trip.  Way back in 2017 , Dirk and I were in the midst of planning a cross country road trip in a 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster he was building.  As detailed in the Astrophotography blog linked above, we discovered a last-minute engine failure that prevented us from taking that trip.  No matter;  we adapted on the fly and ended up taking a wild camping adventure of a lifetime .

However, the yearning to drive cross country in an antique Porsche did not abate easily.  While I was taking a European road trip with my wife and daughter in July 2018, Dirk and another friend were finally scratching the itch, driving a 1969 Porsche 911 to the California coastline.  The Speedster, in spite of an engine swap Dirk and I completed, was still not cooperating.  After 16 days and 4,500 miles, they stored the car in Reno and flew home for winter.

In late May of 2019, it was my turn.  Dirk flew to Reno a couple days before me to address a few minor maintenance issues on the 911.  I flew out on Thursday evening, arriving in time for a late dinner and drinks together.  We embarked mid-morning on Friday, after a hearty brunch and last minute supply run.  Nine nights and 3,200 miles later, we arrived back in Pittsburgh, a bit road weary but only slightly lighter in the wallet .

Free Camping our way cross country

As I said before – the answer to how we accomplished this is really simple.  We camped eight out of the nine nights we spent driving cross country .  Five of the eight nights that we camped were completely free.  Three of the campgrounds charged small fees – $10 per night.  The one night that we did stay in a hotel, it cost us $56, including taxes.

How to find cheap places to stay while on a road trip

The key to a low cost cross country road trip is the ability to find free campsites.  It may be hard to believe, but this is actually fairly easy to do.  With the advent of technology and the wide variety of smart phone apps, there are lots of great resources immediately available for finding all sorts of free campsites.  Or, as was the case for Dirk and I, an adventurous spirit, a little bit of courage, and Google maps is often all that’s needed.

Wild camping is one option for free camping.  Wild camping means pitching your tent directly in the wilderness, away from organized and dedicated campgrounds.  Though wild camping is actually not that different from “regular” camping, I don’t recommend it for camping novices.  As such, I’ll come back around to it as an option.

First, I’m going to discuss how we found the free sites that were still in organized (or semi-organized) campsites.  I will also discuss finding low cost campgrounds, and as a last resort, cheap (but still comfortable) hotel rooms.   That was our basic order of operations – try to find wild sites first, then free organized sites, low cost sites, and if needed, a hotel room .

How to find free campsites

There are now quite a few tools readily at your disposal to find free campsites on your cross country road trip.  Unlike even 10-20 years ago, virtually all of us now have an incredibly powerful resource right in our pocket:  A smart phone like an iPhone or Android.  With a couple excellent apps, a good map app, and a little bit of navigational skill, you’ll be on your way in no time!

First and foremost, one of the most important parts of finding excellent campsites is to surround yourself with natural beauty .  The closer you are to jaw-dropping natural vistas, the better your overall experience will be .  Another key feature is to always seek out campsites that are close to flowing water – rivers, creeks, streams, etc.  In addition to being a visually pleasing backdrop, flowing water provides a substantial noise barrier.  If you’re going to have neighbors, or be close to a town, busy road, etc … the sound of rushing water eliminates most (if not all) man-made noises.

Free camping, as I alluded to earlier, is much easier out west.  Not nearly as much of the western countryside is privately owned and developed, and there seems to be an abundance of state and national lands – parks, forests, monuments, and un-categorized Bureau of Land Management property.   Virtually all space on government owned property – with the obvious exception of National Parks – is free for everyone to use.

The first thing that we always look for is the green areas on Google Maps.  This is how Google designates state and national parks, forests, and other federal land.  These parks often have a number of camping options available, and some even offer dispersed and wild camping (more on that below).

If that doesn’t work, or there isn’t an appealing option available, we’ll start using our apps.  We were almost always searching midday, while already out on the road.  It was very rare that we would have our overnight accommodations sorted out before we started driving.  As such, we relied heavily on a couple apps on our phones – and also on having good cell service!

I’ll go through the phone apps that we found useful, starting with the map apps, since that’s actually what we used the most.  We each had our personal preferences for which apps we liked best, but in general, the following apps were incredibly helpful in making our cross country camping trip successful.

Useful apps for a cross country road trip

• Google Maps:   My personal choice for both research and navigation, Google Maps has very rarely failed to help me find awesome places to camp.  This was especially critical as we made our way east from the Mississippi River, where Bureau of Land Management and other federal lands – a great option for finding free camping – become more scarce.   What to look for:    because it’s tied directly to Google Search, the Maps app is an excellent option to just plug in simple search terms: “free campsites near XYZ town” etc.  Google Maps will bring up a number of options, often ranked by rating (best to worst), and provides you with a number of additional details.  Scroll through until you find the best fit for your needs.
• Waze:   Dirk’s choice for navigation was an excellent tool that we used for much of the trip.  In addition to providing detailed directions and maps, Waze allows users to report up to the moment road conditions of various types.  Waze offers traffic information, accidents, road hazards (debris on the road, etc), police and speed traps, etc.   What to look for:   We did not use Waze for research purposes, as Google Maps was a far better option.  But once we found a good campsite on Google Maps, we would punch it into Waze for navigation.
• The Dyrt:   Of the phone apps dedicated to finding free campsites, The Dyrt was the best of the several options I tried out.  Similar in style and appearance to Google Maps, the app allows users to either scroll around the map to select from options nearby, or to type in a location in the search bar at the top of the screen.  With filters, rating information, and several other very useful features, The Dyrt was an quite helpful when we needed to find free camping.   What to look for:    Because The Dyrt allows you to filter sites based upon a variety of factors, I’d recommend searching ahead of time for the features (and location) you like the most and go from there.  In our case, we filtered by “tent sites”  “dispersed (larger distances between sites)”  “drive-in”  and “fires allowed (so we could cook)” … and would often find a plethora of good options.

• Dark Sky weather app:   We used Dark Sky for our weather forecasting – a crucial part of any camping trip…. Especially on a road trip where we had very limited storage space in the car.  Though the app costs about $4 to download, it’s worth every penny.  The forecasts are highly detailed, providing hourly forecasts for precipitation, rate of precipitation, temperature, “feels like” temps, humidity, cloud cover, and several others.  Most importantly, we found the forecasts to be remarkably accurate – again, a must when you’re sleeping outdoors while driving cross country!

There’s also one very old-fashioned way to find free campsites that we utilized on our road trip:

We found our campsite at Dismal Falls in Virginia by talking to a local at a nearby gas station.  He gave us highly detailed directions from the gas station directly to the best spot to camp near the Falls.

I’ll give you an insider tip on how to pick who to ask:  choose someone (if possible) who looks like they’ve done their fair share of camping in the wilderness.  I got really lucky in this regard – the gentleman in question had set up shop in the gas station (which was also a general store) parking lot to sell antiques.  Dressed in overalls and a straw hat with a deep tan and scruffy beard, he looked like exactly the kind of fella who might know a thing or two about where to camp nearby.

If you can help it, don’t simply chat up the bored-looking teenager running the register – they likely don’t feel inclined to help you, even if they do know a good spot.  You have to seek out a friendly and knowledgeable source of information.

If free campgrounds are not an option, whether it be due to the lack of services available or there just simply isn’t an option near your destination, your next step is to find a cheap campground .

How to find cheap campsites

Finding cheap campsites on a road trip is, in principle, a very similar process to finding free ones.  You will take a lot of the same steps, and perform a lot of the same searches.  One of the biggest differences comes in comparing prices online – be it on a campground’s website, Google reviews, or even by calling and asking.

But there’s definitely a certain finesse that’s required, as balancing between the cost of a site and the services provided is crucial.  Low cost sites are always a bit risky, as you may end up in a place with run down low quality facilities, or worse, none at all.  If a free site has poor (or no) facilities – it’s common that a free site offers little to no facilities – that’s a bit different.  You’re not paying anything, so there’s no budget to draw from for upkeep.

With paid sites, it’s a different story.  You (and everyone else) are paying not just for the ground you sleep on, but also for the services provided.  They’ll typically be pretty rustic – painted cement block buildings housing simple bathrooms and showers, locking trashcans (to keep animals out), and maybe a picnic table and metal fire ring at each site.  Don’t expect much more than that.

But you definitely want to take time to read through Google reviews , and pay special attention to those providing images.  Are the bathrooms clean and attended to daily?  Does the site only provide Porta-Johns?  Are sites well maintained and orderly?  Is there a person – or people – who lives on-site to attend to any needs that come up?  Is firewood and other provisions available?

We had good success with finding pretty excellent low cost sites at State Parks and Forests .  National Forests are also a good option.  We did find one affordable private campground, but the services provided were quite mediocre.  It wasn’t worth the small amount of money we paid.

Folks on road trips often look to KOA campgrounds as an option.  KOA campgrounds, while typically very clean, well-organized and full of amenities, are often quite expensive.  They’re an alright fallback plan, but with sites sometimes costing $50 or more and usually situated very close to the interstate (horrible road noise!), you’d be better off in a hotel room .

How to find a cheap hotel room

When all else fails, booking a cheap hotel room is often pretty easy.  Truth be told, if you’re going to be spending a week or more driving cross country, you’ll likely be grateful for a night or two in a hotel.  The creature comforts of sleeping in a bed under a roof, showering in a private bathroom, and having heat and air conditioning will be a nice break from camping.

In our case, we chose to stay in a cheap motel in Memphis, near the midpoint of our trip.  In addition to the basic comforts above, having a room in Memphis provided us with a couple additional benefits.  We wanted to go out and spend a night on the town; having a hotel room allowed us to clean up, shave, and wash off the days of being outdoors.  It also meant we wouldn’t have to worry about storing our stuff somewhere while we were out.  Last, it gave us a convenient and safe place to Uber to and from downtown.

If you want to spend time in a city – or multiple cities – while taking a cross country road trip, campgrounds likely will not be a viable option .  There obviously are not going to be many campgrounds anywhere near a major city.  You’ll easily spend half an hour or more driving to and from the city, if not more.  In addition, campgrounds near big cities are often more expensive, sometimes drastically so.  They typically are more crowded, noisier and have a good deal of light pollution washing out the night sky.

So…  how do you find a cheap hotel room?   First – don’t book directly with the hotel, at least not at first.  That’s a great way to overpay for a room.  Hotels very rarely offer the most competitive rates directly to consumers, which is a bit crazy but also true.

Instead, your better option is to book through a third party .  As with free campsites, there are a plethora of apps available for your smart phone to help you find – and book – a cheap hotel room.  Hotels will often work with these apps as a way to unload “excess” rooms that haven’t already been booked at discounted rates.

This is optimal for booking a hotel room while on a road trip.  One thing that is very important when driving cross country is the ability to be flexible.  As I mentioned in my very lengthy post about how to take back roads when you travel, flexibility in your planning allows you to adapt on the fly.  Instead of being tied to an itinerary and scheduled stops along the way, booking less and adapting as you travel allows you the freedom to explore things you find along the way.  You never know what you’re going to encounter on the open road, so being flexible is ideal.

I digress.  Dirk and I have only ever booked one hotel in advance, and it was a $3 room for our night in Las Vegas (yes, you read that right:  $3) that was an add-on to our flight through Spirit and the $9 Club.  The apps we’ve used to book incredibly cheap rooms on our multiple road trips:  Hotel Tonight and trivago .  I’m sure there are others, but we’ve had incredible successes with those two.  The search features are convenient, the deals are plentiful – and often mind-blowing – and we’ve never had a problem with any of our bookings.

There are also enough third party hotel booking websites to choke a horse.  We did not book any of our hotels through websites on any of our road trips, but if you want to book in advance, I’ve used Hotels.com and Expedia.com on a number of other trips.  And, of course, if you’re booking far enough in advance, AirBNB and VRBO.com both offer incredible and unique options for places to stay.  I’ve used all of these services on a number of occasions and have never had a bad experience with any of them .

How to find excellent wild campsites

Disclaimer:  Wild camping is not for everyone.  It should only be attempted by experienced campers.   Everyone got that?  Good.  I’m working on a lengthy post about how to wild camp for Living the Dream .  I also have published two of my own guides about how to wild camp , and the gear you’ll need in order to wild camp.

Wild camping is, by far, our preferred form of accommodations during our road trips.  Dirk and I both absolutely love getting as far away from civilization as we possibly can, pitching our tent, and cooking over a campfire.  There’s something incredible about the experience of being so deeply immersed in nature.  The sights and sounds are life-changing.  I’m completely addicted to it, I’ll be the first to admit.

Finding wild campsites is not as hard as it may seem.  In truth, they aren’t fully wild, because in every place we’ve been, it’s clear that we’re not the first people to have camped there.  The sites are totally desolate – there isn’t another soul for miles.  But they are established enough that we aren’t creating new sites nor negatively impacting the ecosystem.

There are a ton of places to wild camp out west – especially in the desert.  Much of the property is owned and managed by the BLM … which makes most of it fair game for adventurers looking for a place to sleep.

The places we camp are easily accessible by vehicle.   They rarely require 4WD, though having high clearance is certainly helpful.  Not necessary, obviously, considering we camped in a couple wild sites in a Porsche 911.  But still, if you want to get really isolated, ground clearance is important.

Finding a site is very simple in theory, but requires a bit of luck in reality.  In all but a few cases, we did no research online .  No map, no apps, no Google searches.  We found almost all of our wild sites the old fashioned way – by driving around and looking for them .  Sounds silly, right?  But here’s the thing – it works .  Once you know what to look for, it actually works really well.

The first step in the process is to keep your eyes peeled for unpaved side roads .  On our road trips, we navigate on scenic byways and back roads as much as we can.  Back roads are often lined with unpaved roads, tantalizingly meandering off into the wilderness.  We took one on a whim during our first day of the California trip , and it caused a paradigm shift in how we travel.

Unpaved side roads often lead to a bevy of awesome campsites.  They weave and wind their way between hills, along ledges, and across valleys, heading towards …. who knows where.  We’ve never driven one all the way to the end, but we HAVE found most of our wild sites a couple miles back from the pavement, simply along the side of the unpaved roads.  You’ll be surprised what you find when you take that first turn off-road.

One thing to be aware of is to keep a sharp eye out for warning signs .  If there’s a fence, a warning sign, no trespassing signs, or other indications that the land is private property –  stay away .   I cannot stress this strongly enough.  Many people are extremely protective of their land, and are very wary of strangers on their property.  It’s best to avoid any possible conflicts, especially when public lands are so readily available.

A few things to keep in mind while searching for wild campsites:

• Start searching for your site around 4PM.   Yes, it means your day ends early, but you definitely do  not want to be in a position where you’re looking for (or setting up) your site after dark.  It also gives you time to collect rocks, firewood, and other provisions you might need while it’s still daylight … and, of course, to be able to enjoy sunset over whatever landscape you’ve discovered.
• As with finding free organized sites, surround yourself with natural beauty.   There’s no point in wild camping if you don’t have something awesome to look at.  Most wild sites are surrounded by beautiful landscapes, so this shouldn’t be difficult.  But combine these first two steps together.  As you hit the 4 o’clock hour, keep your eyes peeled for awesome vistas.  When you find one, start watching for those aforementioned dirt roads.  Take the one that looks like it will afford you the best view.  Having flowing water nearby is nice, but not as necessary, as half the point of wild camping is to get as far away from other people as possible… so noise shouldn’t be an issue.
• Look for a flat stretch of ground that is sheltered from the wind.   This is important, as you never know how the weather and temperature might change once the sun goes down.  When we camped on Big Sur, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the  moment the sun dipped below the horizon, a wicked wind started rushing down the mountain to the sea.  It blew my camera and tripod over, and nearly took our tent away.  We had to pull the truck in front of the tent and secure additional guy lines to it to ensure we didn’t blow away.
• Find a spot that has enough room.   You’re going to need to park, pitch your tent, safely have a campfire, set up chairs and table (if you have one), etc etc.
• Find a spot that isn’t visible from the road.   Make sure you drive far enough back on the unpaved road that you and your site – and your fire – aren’t going to be visible to everyone that drives past.  If possible, you also should try to find a spot that you can pull far enough off the unpaved road that you’re not easily visible.  We’ve never once had any problems with people finding or visiting our campsites, and we want to keep it that way.  When you’re that isolated, you REALLY don’t want to invite trouble.  
• If possible, find a spot that has plenty of rocks and natural firewood nearby.   The more you can conserve the firewood you’ve brought in with you,  the better.  And if you don’t have to keep rocks or a fire ring in your vehicle, that’s excellent too.
• You’re going to be a significant distance from any sort of amenities, so make sure that you are well-stocked and prepared   before you start looking for your site.  Have plenty of food, ice, water, firewood, and TP on hand before you go off grid.   Similarly, it’s a wise idea to have bandages, basic medicines, and proper tools with you in case an emergency should arise.

Hi Deana! Thank you! That’s a great question, and as a matter of fact, is something that I’m already working on – a comprehensive guide to camping, and specifically, wild camping. I don’t want to steal TOO MUCH of my own thunder, but you’ll need a quality tent that’s waterproof but also breathable. You will also need quality sleeping bags, temperature-rated for the lowest temps you might potentially face at your destinations. I got one that’s good down to 0*F, just to be sure. An excellent air mattress makes a WORLD of difference – I got one that’s also compact, because I take it with me on motorcycle camping trips as well. Comfortable camping chairs – durable, too, and easy to clean – with a small table will help you immensely when wild camping. A grill of some sort – we used two different types on the wild camping trips we’ve done – which allows you to cook over an open campfire. Cookware, plates, bowls, mugs, silverware. Knives, a hatchet or machete, and a shovel. A tarp. Towels. A percolator. LOTS of water. A first aid kit. A (full) gas can. A bottle of whiskey. TWO bottles of whiskey!! 🙂

Visiting a national park in 2024? Most beautiful US national parks based on 2023 reviews

Utah has four while colorado, arizona and washington each have two on the top 25 list, compiled by travel lens based on google reviews in 2023. parks missing from the list include the grand canyon..

With 63 National Parks across the United States to choose from, a new analysis of reviews by  Travel Lens  has revealed its top 25 most beautiful national parks in the country.

The online travel publication analyzed thousands of Google reviews posted since the start of 2023 to find out which national parks are the most aesthetically pleasing. The Travel Lens team looked at the total number of reviews, as well as the number of reviews containing the words "beautiful," "stunning," breathtaking" and "gorgeous."

Crater Lake National Park in Oregon was deemed the most beautiful park in America, claiming 45.26% of reviews praising its natural beauty.

"The lake is so so blue, as blue as the deep sea, and it’s just a lake!" wrote one Google user last month. "Amazing experience, dazzling views, stunning nature."

27 Budget Tips To Save Up On Your USA Road Trip

Traveling in the United States can be very expensive and you might end up changing your plan when you run out of your budget. Well, I can tell you it’s not gonna be cheap for sure but if you’re smart enough and you don’t mind putting yourself out of your comfort zone, you can do it for a very reasonable cost.

We’ve done our US road trip recently. Before/during the trip we wanted to find out the best saving tips and share all the ideas with other fellow travelers out there!

• CAR RENTAL – $950 (we did not reach the monthly discount)
• GAS – $750

• FOOD – $550 (we cooked a lot)
• FEES (parking & entrances) – $200
• OTHER (camping gear, car gear, etc.) – $250
• TOTAL: $3050 (2 people)
• TOTAL per PERSON: $1525
• DAILY TOTAL: $60/person

* *NOTE: these prices apply to our costs in 2015, so the prices now can differ.

Renting a car in the United States

IMPORTANT NOTE:   Before we start, I have to point this out!!!  Make sure you bring your credit/debit card with a sufficient amount of funds! You might be able to pay cash for your rental but for security (deposit) reasons they always require valid credit/debit card!

Some of the rental companies don’t accept debit cards , so I strongly suggest checking it out before you make a reservation!

Getting a car trough rental company is usually very expensive, especially when you’re buying full insurance,  returning back in a  different location or under age of 25 . That’s why you should definitely look for some websites with discount offers.

NOTE: This is not a 100% option according to online ratings / but worth to risk!

You can easily find rental websites that compare the prices for you and when you book your car through them, you can get pretty cool discounts and save up to 200 – 500 USD . Usually, you’ll get booking only with basic insurance and the total cost can be much higher (but you can ensure the car with cheaper insurance companies).

For example   hotwire.com  or   rentalcars.com (booking.com partner)

HOT Tip –  Register on  USAA , a website for military members and their families where you can get discounts without ever being somehow involved, not even being US citizen.

Example: You can rent an intermediate car/month / approx. 600 USD

While registering you’ll need basic info, social security number  and for the question about military members be honest you answer “none”. This will allow you to avoid paying fees for additional driver, under 25 years and it gives you also a discount of the total rental price. After you’re done with registration go for “car rental discounts” and from there you can choose from 4 different rental companies (for example Hertz ). When you get there have this document https://images.hertz.com/pdfs/USAA_FAQ.pdf ready, in case they will try to charge some extra fees.

NOTE: Obtaining a social security number might be a problem for noncitizens! You need to have a work permit (work visa) in USA. Find more information here .

Rental companies charge very high prices for full insurance which you can avoid by ensuring your car by an external company, for example, insuremyrentalcar.com .

For example,  You pay only 30USD for a period of a maximum of 1 month!

Make sure you check out policies of your rental car provider! You might not be able to rent by an external company. 

So let’s see what fees you should keep in mind if you would like to estimate your price for rental:

• Car Rental Price – final price of the vehicle.
• Damage Waiver – Insurance of rented vehicle / this is obligatory!
• Liability Protection – Insurance of other vehicles and people injured in an accident caused by you. Make sure that bodily injury liability is also included.    Check out your travel insurance, it might be included (cheaper).
• Personal Accident Insurance – Insurance of you and people in the car. Should be part of your travel insurance.
• Side Road Assistance – You can choose to add this to your insurance. It covers all expenses of assistance, such as, flat tire, lookout, towing, fuel delivery, winching service, etc.
• Young Drive Fee (21-24) – If you have a chance, rent car on somebody who is at least 25 years old. Fee can vary from 10 – 25 USD per day.
• Additional Driver Fee – an additional driver can cost you 10 – 25 USD per day. Insurance doesn’t cover for the driver who’s not added on the contract.
• Airport Rental Fee – some companies charge if you rent straight from the airport. Try to avoid that!
• Different Location Return Fee – almost every company charges you returning fee. They are some exceptions between some locations, such as LA – Las Vegas.

This popular concept of Airbnb is now available for cars as well! On websites like getaround.com and turo.com ,  you can rent car for your road trip from people (owners). It’s definitely more affordable and more attractive when it comes to the choice. Imagine, road trippin’ in Mini Cooper, BMW, or Tesla car? Yes! Option are pretty creative and unique.

Buying a car is can be a  very economical option when you’re good in the industry and you can recognize what’s a good deal or not. Buying a used car involves risks, such as repairs, scams but on the other side, you might make money out of it. If you buy cheaper than you sell, you’re the winner! One of the best websites for this purpose is craigslist.com .

Getting a car involves some necessary paperwork that can take quite some time! Read more details about this topic on tripadvisor .

This is pretty straight forward! Best way is to split most of the expenses when you travel in a group of (2-4). If you can’t find anybody, don’t worry there are websites where you can find other fellow solo travelers who you can share ride with. Check out couchsurfing.com , ridester.com or carpoolworld.com .

When road tripping in the US, you will do thousands of kilometers and you might end up spending 600 USD just on the gas! We did 8000 kms, for example. We noticed quite big differences between the prices in states. There might be a 1$ / per gallon just within the state and $2 differences between different states.

We recommend planning your trip according to  gas price map  which is very detailed and helpful. You can also get an app for your smartphone!

TIP: some of the gas stations give a better price for gas when you pay by CASH, it’s very individual and again, depends on the state! But I definitely saw it in California. Watch out for the signs on price stands in front.

Parking in national parks is usually included in the entrance fee or in some small cities is for FREE but in bigger cities, it can be more complicated and much more expensive.

Here are a few tips:

• Wallmart is in most cases free + WIFI. Note that not every single Wallmart parking lot allows you to park, so it might be illegal! Check out parking locator where you can find the exact information about this topic.
• Residential areas are for FREE (sometimes depending on hours)
• Overnight RV / camping parking (affordable)
• WATCH OUT FOR NO PARKING SIGN!

Don’t pay for GPS! Get free apps into your smartphone or buy a map for 6 bucks (like we did).

You can also get GPS in the shop with a good returning policy ! For example in Wallmart, where you can buy your navigation, use it for few weeks and then return it! See point 6. of this article for more information.

Have your “ paper map backup ” ready as well! Some of the remote places in USA won’t have any signal coverage and you might end up lost in the middle of nowhere!

Some of the toll roads can surprise in unexpected locations and prices might also very high. Make sure you always carry some cash in your car to avoid any fines! Check out this full list of toll roads in the USA .

AAA is another interesting website that can be very useful in North America! It’s American Automobile Association which has over 50 million members. It’s a non-profit organization offering road services to their members in all over the United States and Canada.

If you visit their office they can provide you with FREE maps, guidebooks or routing maps. You can also take advantage of great discounts for accommodation, food and road assistance.

If you’re from the US or you’re planning to stay longer, there are options for building your own caravan from the van! You can get cheap/good/spacious vans in the USA quite easily.

Vandogtraveller sells an amazing ebook (276 pages) on his website for only 10 bucks which guides you through the whole process of conversion. His story is really cool, check out his website vandogtraveller.com .

Campsites in the United States are usually in great condition and come with BBQ grill, fire pits, showers, restrooms, wifi access, etc. Price is depending on location, season and facilities.

FREE camping sites you can find on  freecampsites.net  or you can camp basically anywhere in “National Forest”. BLM sites are also sometimes for FREE.

Paid camping sites  have usually more facilities and they are much more affordable than motels. (Costs is between 10 USD – 40 USD). Most of the campsites are in google maps and you can find reviews or the official website.

Camp in my garden  is another cool site where you can find camp spots in people’s backyard for only a couple of bucks. Check out here . These options can be actually pretty fancy and friendly experience since some of the people have really nice gardens.

Motels are almost on every corner in the US. They are not a very economical option but it’s definitely not expensive when you travel in a group of 4 people.

One of the most popular motel budget networks is “Motel 6”   or “ Super 8 ” hotels network. which offers rooms for 4 people between (40 – 70 USD). These rooms usually have desk, small TV, small fridge, AC, closet etc. nothing too special but more than for enough for travelers/backpackers.

Tip: If you travel in a group of 2.. you can go and say that room is for one person only, then you end up paying less, and of course more people can stay.

Tip: if there is options to collect hotel points, definitely go for it. It can save you money as well, just apply for a hotel credit card. You can get straight away 70,000 points when you sign-up and those can cover a couple of nights for you.

The way it works is by offering vacant rooms of different hotels that didn’t manage to get their rooms fully booked in time so they offer them on the app for a steep discount just to fill them up. Because of the nature of the app, you can’t book the rooms too far in advance (The maximum is 1 week) so you cannot really rely on it but if you are flexible with your accommodation options then this might be the perfect option for you.

In bigger cities, you can find hostels and take advantage of shared (dorm) rooms which can some costs $15 / night.

Airbnb is an amazing website where you easily find cheaper accommodation in somebody’s house, flat or kind of private hotels or hostels. There are plenty of options and you can find accommodation as low as $20-40 per night for single room or bed in a dorm room.

It’s becoming a very popular option these days, not just in USA. They have an amazing interactive search/filtering system which helps a lot to find exactly what you’re looking for. 

Yes, you can also sleep for FREE! One of the most popular websites offering hosting is couchsurfing.com where you can create your profile and send requests to random people all around the world. It’s all based on references from other so-called couch surfers!

You know what they say, travel often & eat well! The food you can find on every corner and basically everything that you wish! But sometimes it might kick-off your budget if you don’t eat smart.

Get good food from restaurants and do not try to save up on food but we recommend some of the tips:

• FAST foods are everywhere (not the most economical option)
• get some snacks and breakfast stuff from cheap stores like dollar tree .
• do your shopping in Wallmart (cheaper prices)
• get the member cards
• cook at your camping site! here are some camping recipes !
• get your cooking tools (for one-time use) from dollar tree or Wallmart.
• be creative! 😉

When you camp during your whole trip and you eat in camp you can squeeze your budget to ( $10 / day ).

Most of the big supermarket chains have free loyalty cards that give you massive discounts every time you purchase at their store. The reason they do this is that by you having a loyalty card they can collect data on your purchases which helps them run their business more efficiently. In exchange for giving them some data on consumer behavior, you are rewarded with pretty neat discounts.

When you are traveling on a budget this is the perfect opportunity to save loads of money on your basic necessities. As you know most of your basic expenses fall into 3 categories: logistics, accommodation, and food. And if you minimize the expenses in the food column then you are on a good path to make your trip budget-friendly. You should definitely make use of this hack!

If you’re planning to visit more than 4 national parks you should definitely get annual pass which cost only $80 per vehicle and it allows you to visit 90% of the parks in US.

City Pass  cards can be really handy while road tripping in USA, especially if you’re planning a lot of sightseeing. They usually contain various city attractions and public transport and helps you to save up to $100 sometimes.

Hi Guys, great article- I have few questiongs and wondered if you had any insight? – For the USAA you said one would need social insurance nr- is there a way to go around this? (since neither of us is a US citizen) – Do you think October is still ok for road tripping and camping in the northern states (minesotta, montana washington etc) – Do you think that a small campervan might be better than tent? (having to build it up every night etc)- And if we had a small campervan, do you think we could just part at the wallmart parking and stay there? Isnt this illegal in the US?

1. You don’t have to US citizen to get SSN but you need working permit (work visa) to get it, it’s probably not possible to go around. Maybe through some other person who can register and get it for you! 2. For example: Montana (Yellowstone) was quite cold already in September during the night… depends also on quality of sleeping bags etc… but I think it’s still doable! 3. HOW LONG DO YOU NEED FOR A CROSS COUNTRY ROAD TRIP?

So how long does it take to do a cross country road trip? The drive from Los Angeles to New York City is 2776 miles and takes roughly 41 hours without stopping. At 8 hours a day, that would take you five days to complete.

But what about stops and, you know…enjoying the ride?

Without knowing your route, it’s hard to suggest a time frame. At a minimum, you’ll need a week for a one-way cross country road trip. Two weeks is better, though. Two weeks allows you to drive for shorter distances and to take more time to enjoy the places you stop at. Three weeks is perfection!

America is the 3rd largest country in the world, so there’s a lot of ground to cover when driving cross country. It’s estimated that it takes about three months to see every state in the lower 48.

THE BEST ROAD TRIP ROUTES IN THE US

When planning a road trip, the question “What is the best cross country road trip?” is bound to come up. The sheer size of the US makes answering it a complicated task. Below, I will cover the most iconic road trip routes and a few other suggestions to spark your own creativity. 

Some things to consider for yourself are how much time you have, what season you’ll be traveling in, and what kind of stops you’re interested in making. Do you want to focus on nature activities, touring big cities, tasting America’s best food, or quirky roadside attractions? 

Let the following routes be an inspiration, but don’t forget it’s also possible to plan your trip as you go. 

When we built our cross country road trip itinerary, we knew we needed to get from North Idaho to Maryland. It was winter, so we chose to avoid the Rocky Mountains and any hazardous winter driving conditions. We opened up a map (really, it’s more like we opened up an internet browser and looked at Google Maps) and figured we should head South and plan as we go. 

We knew we would visit Utah’s National Parks, but other than that, we left it open to allow for spontaneity and random side trips.

On our way traveling through Arkansas, I looked at the map and noticed we would be close to Hot Springs National Park. We had time, so we decided to make a small detour to see America’s first unofficial National Park. Those are the kind of things you want to leave time and space for. 

Let’s explore the most popular cross country road trip routes.

Famous For:  Kitschy roadside attractions, old-fashioned motels, and its throwback Americana feel

Route 66 is the most famous American road trip that is more about the journey than the sights. You’ll travel through small towns where the most you’ll see is an old-fashioned main street and an old diner. It’s worth it to tap into an old-time Americana complete with neon lights and Art Deco motels. It’s also a great opportunity to see underrated cities like Albuquerque and Oklahoma City.

Begins and Ends:  Downtown Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, CA

Time Needed:  At 2448 Miles, Two Weeks (one way)

Highlights :  Cadillac Ranch  in Amarillo, TX, eating a hamburger and an ice cream float in an old-fashioned diner, getting a photo op in front of a Route 66 sign, Tower Station and U Drop Inn Cafe in Texas, Gateway Arch in Missouri.

PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY

Famous For:  Gorgeous, sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.

The PCH, or Highway 1, is one of the most iconic drives in America. We’ve done sections of the drive, and it never disappoints. From the fecund forests of Washington to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to the sunny ocean vibes of Southern California, there’s something for everyone on this beautiful coastal drive.

Begins and Ends:  Seattle, WA to San Diego, CA

Time Needed:  1650 Miles, It can be done in one week, but 2 weeks is better (one way).

Highlights :  Olympic National Park , Big Sur, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Redwood National Park, Mendocino, Hearst Castle, Los Angeles, San Diego Zoo, Laguna Beach, Tacos in San Diego

Tip : Drive North to South so you can be closer to the water for the drive.

THE LONELIEST ROAD

Famous For:  Large stretches of driving where you’ll see little to no signs of civilization.

Route 50, also known as “The Loneliest Road” and “the backbone of America,” is a true cross country road trip. Taking you from coast to coast, you’ll pass through 11 states on this grand road trip across America. From metropolitan cities like Washington D.C to deserted ghost towns to the azure waters of Lake Tahoe, this route takes you on a diverse cross-section of the US that’s guaranteed to give you a little bit of everything.

Begins and Ends:  Sacramento, CA to Ocean City, MD

Time Needed:  3000 Miles, Can be done in two weeks, but three weeks is ideal (one way).

This is a great cross country trip for someone who doesn’t want large chunks of time in the car with nothing to see. There is so much to do and something for everyone.

Begins and Ends:  Maine to Florida

Time Needed: 1900 miles, 10 days is good, but two weeks is best (one way).

Highlights : Mystic CN, Boston MA, Savannah GA, NYC, detours to the beaches of North and South Carolina, St. Augustine, The Florida Keys

TIP: I-95 is great to hop on to when you want to get somewhere faster, but the true beauty of this road trip is mainly on the smaller roads that run along the coast. Deviate from the 95 to explore the coastal islands that run down the entire east coast.

THE MIGHTY FIVE

Famous For:  Out of this world red rock desert landscapes and bucket-list hikes.

A Utah National Parks road trip  to explore all 5 of Utah’s National Parks (dubbed the Mighty 5) is perfect for adventurers and explorers. With mindboggling hikes, slot canyons to wade through, white water rafting, and an ocean of red desert to traverse, Southern Utah will leave an imprint on your soul.

Begins and Ends:  Moab, Utah to Springdale, Utah

Time Needed:  375 Miles, Can be done at warp speed in 7 days, but 10 days are best (one way).

Highlights:  Angels Landing Hike and The Narrows in Zion, Delicate Arch in Arches , Fruit Picking in Capitol Reef, Mesa Arch in Canyonlands, Little Wild Horse Slot Canyon

THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY

Famous For:  Stunning Fall foliage display.

The  Blue Ridge Parkway  takes you through the beating heart of Appalachia, where you’ll pass waterfalls, lookouts, charming tunnels, small towns, and meandering rivers. If you’re driving it in Fall (the most popular time) you’ll see Fall foliage that rivals the best of New England. With a maximum speed of 45 MPH and no big trucks allowed, it’s the kind of road where you’ll want to take your time to enjoy the views while Bluegrass music plays on repeat.

Begins and Ends:  Great Smoky Mountain National Park in NC to Shenandoah National Park in VA.

Time Needed:  469 Miles, 3 days is enough, 7 Days is ideal (one way)

Highlights:  Great Smoky Mountain National Park,  Asheville, NC, Mile High Swinging Bridge, Blue Ridge Music Center, Mabry Mill, Shenandoah National Park , Roanoke, VA

TIP:  If you want an even longer journey, you could include additional  East Coast National Parks  in your itinerary for even more sublime nature.

These are tried and true cross-country road ideas, but don’t forget you can always make up your own road trip route . You could go on a donut road trip and check out the best donuts in every state (psst-the  best donuts are in Boise ), or you could see as many  west coast national parks  as you can. 

Maybe you’ll be road-tripping in Spring and want to see the most exquisite wildflower blooms in the country, or it’s summer, and you’ll hit up America’s best waterparks. The sky is the limit!

Now, let’s discuss how to plan a cross-country road trip. Based on our experiences, we’ve created a cross-country travel guide that includes everything we did and learned along the way.

BEST CROSS COUNTRY ROAD TRIP CAR

If you won’t be using your own car, you’ll need to find the best cross country road trip car for your needs. If you’ll be traveling in winter or in places with rugged terrain like Southern Utah, it’s recommended to have a four-wheel-drive vehicle that can handle the rougher conditions.

The first choice is to use a car rental service. You can look on rentalcars.com to see what the going rates are for rental cars. It’s a search engine that specializes in rental car prices across the web. You can often get a discounted rate if you’ll be using the car for a longer period.

Also, don’t forget if you are only going one way with the car, most places will charge a one-way delivery fee.

Another option is to rent a camper or RV for your big adventure. You can rent from a peer-to-peer service like RV Share and Outdoorsy , or you can opt for a company like Cruise America .

If you like the idea of an RV but want something smaller, you could also opt for a converted van that typically has a bed, a fridge, and other amenities. It’s a great option for solo or couples travel. The biggest renter of campervans is Escape Campervans . Since they have multiple offices, it’s a great choice for someone who wants a one-way rental. You can also check the sites I mentioned above, RV Share and Outdoorsy, for campervan rentals.

An RV or campervan rental can range from $100-$500 a day. It’s a more expensive option, but the potential for savings is better because you can cook your own meals and potentially camp for free. But don’t forget about gas prices! This brings me to our next section..coming up with a cross country road trip budget.

TIP: A n alternative option to a rental car is to try your luck at a one-way car or RV transfer service like immova and transfercar . The basic idea is that a company or person needs a car or RV moved and you pay as low as $1 a day to have a practically free vehicle. A great option if you are flexible and their travel dates work for you. You can also look at when big RV companies like El Monte RV need their RVs moved and offer them at exceptionally low rates.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO DRIVE ACROSS THE COUNTRY?

There’s no straight answer to what a cross-country road trip costs. We averaged about $150 a day on a three-week road trip in our RV. Could we have done it for less? ABSOLUTELY. We didn’t go crazy, but we also didn’t scrimp. If you’re willing to cut corners and camp in free places, you can potentially do a road trip for $50-75 a day.

Let’s explore how to plan a road trip on a budget. I’ll discuss the five main expenses and offer tips on how to save money.

• GAS : Depending on what kind of vehicle you are driving, this will probably be one of your biggest expenses. You can use a fuel calculator to estimate what it will cost for your trip and your car type. If you are driving an RV, you can use this fuel calculator to get a rough idea of what it would cost. As for saving money, you can use the GasBuddy App to see the cheapest gas stations on your route. We also use our AMEX Blue Cash Preferred Credit Card, which gives us 3% cash back on gas and 6% cash back on groceries . We spent $1300 on gas, which means we earned roughly $40 back. That’s a free tank of gas! That and the $150 sign-up bonus make it a great money-saving choice.
• LODGING: Here is where you have a lot of options for saving money. Camping is the cheapest way to travel cross country whether you choose to pitch a tent, sleep in your car, or are in an RV or campervan. You can stay in conventional campsites that range from $25 to $60 a night, or you can try to find free campsites. Free campsites are generally found on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land or parking lots (Walmart parking lots are popular) that allow you to sleep overnight – but please don’t pitch a tent in a parking lot! Only vehicles are allowed. The best way to find camping spots is to search on the Dyrt App . It’s a camp reviewing site that is a GREAT resource for finding campsites and free sites. It’s worth upgrading to the pro version to have access to it offline. If camping isn’t your thing, you can look for cheap room rentals with an app like HotelTonight. HotelTonight is perfect for road trips since it searches for last-minute discounts on hotels. It’s also a tiered service so the more you use it, the more exclusive discounts you can access. If you sign up for an account and put in my discount code CGRANCE in your Account Settings, you can get $25 off a booking. You can also use the sites like Booking to see what’s available around you. Airbnb or VRBO could also have cheap options, but you’ll have to plan ahead since it’s not always possible to book it the same day. In general, lodging in a budget hotel will cost you $50-$125 a night.
• FOOD: We spent roughly $25 a day for a family of three. Granted, we ate all of our meals in our camper and rarely got takeout. That’s where having a fully functioning kitchen on wheels can go a long way to saving you money. If you aren’t traveling in an RV, you’ll want to save money by making your own meals as much as possible. Pack a cooler and eat turkey sandwiches every day if you need to. My favorite way to get fancy on the cheap is to make a charcuterie spread of summer sausage, salami, crackers, cheese, olives, almonds, and dried fruit. I even bring a wood cutting board and stemless wineglasses with silicone sleeves because it’s how I roll. Also, most gas stations will have microwaves. We would often buy frozen burritos from Amy’s beforehand at a grocery store and heat them at a gas station for lunch.
• ENTERTAINMENT: Our entertainment costs came out to about $3 a day. We spent very little since we had a primarily nature-based itinerary. Hiking is free! Plus, we opted to buy the National Parks pass that gets you into every National Park and additional federal land sites. You should definitely buy the pass if you are going to any National Parks. You can buy and learn more about the pass here. If you are visiting a big city, you can check if it offers a City Pass . A city pass will typically give you discounts to restaurants, museums, and popular attractions.
• MISCELLANEOUS – There are always little costs that come up while you travel, whether that’s souvenirs, oil for your car, or payment for a toll. You should leave room in your cross country road trip budget for random things that always pop up. I would budget $5-$10 a day for miscellaneous items.

We recorded everything we paid for. You, of course, don’t need to do that, but if making spreadsheets is fun for you (woohoo!), then I would recommend using Excel or Numbers and using one of their pre-formatted templates for logging your costs.

TIPS FOR A CROSS COUNTRY ROAD TRIP

Before you head out on your big adventure, here’s some cross country road trip advice to spare you any headaches.

• Before you leave, make sure to get an oil change and a full check-up on your car, including having your tires checked. It’s also worth investing in a roadside assistance plan, especially if you have an older vehicle. We used AAA and had to use it three times on the road. AAA is great for regular cars, and Good Sam Roadside is good for RVs. You can check prices for  AAA here  and  Good Sam Roadside here . 
• Make sure to download your maps beforehand! You don’t want to be stuck in Utah because you have no service and no idea which road to take. Google Maps has the ability to download maps. Use it!
• We prefer to drive for a maximum of five hours. Anything more than that makes the road trip unenjoyable. Find the sweet spot for you. It’s okay to do a few long 8-hour days, but remember to balance them with days off of driving.
• If you’re looking for a cross country road trip planner, you can use the app or website Roadtrippers to help you find interesting sights along the way. We’ve never used the app but have heard good things about it.
• Lastly, use travel bloggers like myself, Pinterest, and Instagram for fun tips on places you will be visiting. Pinterest has a wealth of great travel information, and you’ll be able to find fun off-the-beaten-path recommendations. You can check out our Pinterest page and our Instagram page . CROSS COUNTRY ROAD TRIP PACKING LIST

We have an extensive post detailing what every person needs to have on their road trip packing list . Be sure to check it out for a detailed list of what to bring. Here’s a simple rundown of a few cross country road trip essentials.

• Emergency Roadside Kit – Having a   roadside emergency kit  with a surplus of safety devices is essential for a road trip. At the very least, make sure you have a   high-quality set of jumper cables . If you are driving in a remote area where other cars might not be able to help you out, you might want to consider a  mobile battery jumper  that allows you to jumpstart your car on your own.
• First Aid Kit – A first aid kit is something you should always have in your car. Don’t forget it for your big road trip.
• Cooler – A high-quality cooler that will keep your food cold for days is a great investment. We are die-hard fans of Yeti and love the Yeti Roadie 24 Hard Cooler  for road trips. It can fit behind the passenger’s seat and is long enough to fit a bottle of wine. More economical choices are the Arctic Zone Cooler and the   Igloo Quart MaxCold Cooler .
• Phone Chargers and Power Bank – In addition to our phone charger that goes into the cigarette lighter, we bring a  splitter  so multiple people can plug in their device and a  solar charger power bank,  so we’re never left without something to charge our devices. It’s handy when traveling with many people so everyone can have a way to charge a device.
• Car Organizers – Having an organization system is great if you’ll be on the road for a while or are making a family cross country road trip. We like this  backseat organizer  with SO MANY pockets for your gadgets, notebooks, and snacks. It’s a fantastic option if you’re traveling with young kids. We particularly like that it has a tablet holder.
• I also think this  car seat gap organizer  is brilliant. It sits in the gap between the console and the passenger or driver’s seat. It’s that little bit of space where you always drop your phone, and you’re like  “$%^&*!”  because it’s so difficult to fit your hand in there. Well, this organizer stops anything from falling in that gap while also providing extra storage. Like I said…brilliant.
• Conversation Starters – When you hit the road, pull up our post of 160 road trip questions and road trip trivia questions. These are perfect for long stretches of time when you can either get to know your travel companion even better or test out your trivia skills on each other. Also, read through our post on the best things to do on a road trip for more fun games and ideas.
• Entertainment – Your podcasts, e-books, road trip playlists, and Netflix shows should all be already downloaded (don’t rely on your cell service). If you’re not already signed up, you can even do a trial run of Audible or Amazon Music to get free fun content for the road.
• Cozy Everything – Being cozy on a road trip is paramount! Bring some cozy slip-on shoes, a sherpa blanket from Pendleton, and breathable clothing.

Hi. Reading your time to allow for each trip has me confused. Are talking one way, or round trip? I can’t imagine doing a cross country trip in two, or even three weeks and have it not be an awful lot of all day driving round trip.

Hi! I’m glad you enjoyed the article. Sorry for not responding sooner. We were traveling in Thailand, and I just saw this today. Yes, all the recommended drive times are for one way. Round trip, you would need to double it or cut out a lot of day trips and exploration to reduce your time.
