Journey Behind the Falls

To stand at the heart of Niagara, you’ll first need to descend 125 feet and explore 130-year-old tunnels through the bedrock, but you’ll feel the thunderous vibration of the Horseshoe Falls long before you see them.

The observation deck at the foot of this 13-storey-tall wonder will leave you breathless (and maybe a little bit wet), but don’t forget the viewing portals cut straight through the rock, offering a once-in-a-lifetime view of one-fifth of the world’s fresh water crashing down in front of you.

Explore the Storied Tunnels

After journeying deep into the bedrock, navigate fascinating tunnels that lead behind the Horseshoe Falls. You’ll find incredible cave-like portals that open behind the falling water, where you’ll see, hear and feel the power of the falls up-close at Journey Behind the Falls!

null

Lower Observation Deck

Make your way to the lower observation deck to see one of the world’s most beloved natural wonders from a perspective few have witnessed. Feel the power of nature’s force as you stand just feet away from the mighty Niagara Falls, surrounded by the ancient rock formations carved by centuries of relentless flow.

Journey Through Time

Journey Behind the Falls holds a rich history, dating back to 1832 when the first staircase was constructed down into the Niagara Gorge for visitors to enter what was then called the “Sheet of Falling Water” attraction. This history is celebrated and showcased throughout a refreshed queuing area featuring all-new exhibits.

Go on a journey through time, from the formation of the Falls to the first Indigenous inhabitants and the rise of Niagara Falls as a global tourism destination.

Price & Hours

  • Facilities 3.5
  • Atmosphere 4.0

On the Journey Behind the Falls, you'll be able to stand directly behind the roaring sheet of water and get a literal behind-the-scenes peek at this magnificent natural attraction. The tour begins with an elevator ride to an observation deck where you can take in the view of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and the Niagara River. From there, follow the 130-year-old caverns and enjoy the roaring curtain of the falls from a different perspective. However, be prepared for crowds – Journey Behind the Falls is one of the most popular ways to see the falls, so you may find that the tunnels are rather cramped.

Recent reviews

Recent visitors highly recommended the Journey Behind the Falls, even if you've already gone on a Maid of the Mist tour, as this attraction offers yet another interesting perspective of the falls. To avoid crowds and enjoy the view in peace, reviewers suggest getting to the attraction when it opens at 8 or 9 a.m., depending on the month. Ponchos are provided, but travelers report leaving a little damp anyway.

The Journey Behind the Falls tour begins on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, and the caverns are open daily from 8 or 9 a.m.; closing times vary by day.

Tickets cost CA$19 (around $14) for adults and CA$12.50 (about $9) for kids between 3 and 12. For more information, check out the Journey Behind the Falls website .

#1 Maid of the Mist

The main reason to visit Niagara Falls is to see the falls, and one of the most memorable ways to do just that is to sport a poncho and hop on a Maid of the Mist boat. These boats have been shuttling visitors to and from the base of the falls since the 1840s, but today’s fleet is sustainably all-electric. Be prepared to get wet: The Maid of the Mist practically dunks you under the falls, but rain gear is provided, and many say that this is one of the best ways to experience the splendor of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. In fact, it's one of the region's best guided tours .

Recent visitors said you can't leave Niagara Falls without taking a ride on the Maid of the Mist.  Though you are provided with a plastic poncho, you should plan to wear waterproof shoes and gear, according to travelers.

Have been to Niagara countless times never been up there skylon tower, no reason and what a great new experience to see the old tunnel and to view the falls from the base. Great to see Niagara preserving this historical and very important site that is part of such an important evolution of power! Worth the money, visit and time. Read more Written November 26, 2023
  • jordandemarre 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Sites Unseen We went to experience the tunnel, but got so much more. The water power station is so informative. I greatly enjoyed the displays and interactive experiences available throughout the power station. The elevator ride can be claustrophobic for some, be prepared, it's worth it! There are informational boards every few hundred feet. The walk through the tunnel very cool, it feels like being in the sewers without the smell. The tunnel is slightly under a mile one way. Wear good shoes for the walk and the conditions (wet and slippery). Read more Written November 23, 2023
  • GrandLakeOhio 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Interesting, but expensive. The tunnel was built 1901 to discharge the water from the power plant back into the Niagara River. The tunnel was excavated with only lanterns, rudimentary dynamite, pickaxes and shovels, but now has a smooth concrete floor added so that you may walk the 2,200 feet to the newly constucted viewing platform at the base of the falls. The view gives you a new perspective for viewing the Horseshoe and American Falls, including close-up views of the Maid of the Mist and other tour ships. The tour also includes access the restored Niagara Parks Power Station, Canada's first major power plant on that side of the Niagara River. Admission is $28 Canadian and parking is $35 Canadian, so prepare yourself for the sticker shock. It's a pricey package if the Tunnel is your only destination, but that 35 dollar parking fee is for all day, so if you park clear down at the end, you can also use it as your arrival spot for seeing the rest of the Niagara sites. What’s Journey Behind the Falls Like in Niagara Falls Winter?

It’s hard to pinpoint the “best time to visit Niagara Falls,” because every season presents unique ways to experience this dazzling world wonder. While being near the water at Niagara Falls sounds like a go-to spring or summer activity, the Journey Behind the Falls tour is beautiful in cooler Niagara Falls weather, too, when you can see Niagara Falls from spectacular vantage points.

The Journey Behind the Falls tour is located at Horseshoe Falls, which is the largest section of Niagara Falls with about 90 percent of Niagara River flowing over this side. Here’s what to expect from the Journey Behind the Falls Niagara Falls in December and other winter months, and what a visit to the city of Niagara Falls is like during winter:

What the Journey Behind the Falls Tour Includes

The Falls in Winter

Journey Behind the Falls is a year-round Niagara Falls tour that takes visitors to observation decks below and behind the falls. On this self-guided tour, visitors go down 150 feet by elevator and are met with a short tunnel that provides access to two outdoor observation areas and two viewing spots right behind the falls.

In the Niagara Falls winter, icy conditions prevent the lower observation deck from being open due to safety reasons, but you can still see the falls from other observation points. The upside to this closure means winter rates to the Journey Behind the Falls tour are reduced.

Another benefit of doing this tour of Niagara Falls in December or another winter month is that the tours are far less crowded compared to peak summer season. In the summer, you may find yourself being designated a time to come back because of wait times, but you shouldn’t have that issue in colder Niagara Falls weather.

Any time of year on the Journey Behind the Falls tour, you can see Niagara Falls from viewing portals that are cut into the bedrock behind the falls, called the Cataract Portal and the Great Falls Portal. Throughout the tour, there’s lots of history and background you can read about how the tunnels you’ll navigate were dug more than 130 years ago. The tour takes about 45 minutes, and it’s advised to bring a waterproof camera and waterproof bags or purses for your belongings just in case you’re hit with mist.

You could take the Journey Behind the Falls tour every time you visit Niagara Falls, and it will always be amazing. Feel the mist on your face and the thunderous power of Niagara Falls roar around you as you’re surrounded by this awesome sight.

Why the Journey Behind the Falls Tour Is Unique in Winter

Niagara Falls winter is so cool (literally) to experience, because Niagara Falls is typically covered in sheets of snow and ice come wintertime. To the outside observer, it looks so solid and thick that it appears Niagara Falls has frozen . Really, the immense volume of the falls and the installation of ice booms made of steel on the river mean it never stops flowing, so it’s neat to see them in a wintry yet working state.

The Journey Behind the Falls tour is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy together. It’s completely safe for kids, but be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes so you can move through the route easily. There are Niagara Parks Commission workers at the site to answer any questions and to make sure tourists are protected as they navigate the tour.

Other Reasons to Plan a Niagara Falls Winter Trip

Besides taking a unique Journey Behind the Falls tour in Niagara Falls winter, here are some other reasons why cold Niagara Falls weather makes winter a great time to visit Niagara Falls:

  • Frozen nature: See Niagara Falls trees and plants covered in snow and ice as they cling to rocky cliff edges. Their hardiness even in cold winter months is something to admire.
  • Sunshine abounds: Even when it’s cold, Niagara Falls still has plenty of sunshine. Bask in a sunny glow as you play in Niagara Falls snow.
  • Less crowds: Because summer is peak season, everything you do in Niagara Falls in winter will be less crowded. Spread out, take your time, and explore the city of Niagara Falls at a relaxed and leisurely pace.

Be sure to pack lots of layers so you stay warm wherever you go. A warm coat, hat, gloves and scarf are great to wear, and you can always peel them off when you stop at an indoors spot.

Book a Trip to the City of Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a top destination for travelers from around the world. It’s awe-inspiring to see Niagara Falls up-close, and the Journey Behind the Falls tour is a great way to do so.

Make your trip to Niagara Falls a memorable one by booking your stay at Marriott on the Falls. Our friendly concierge team can help you book your Journey Behind the Falls tour and help you find other fun ways to enjoy Niagara Falls in December or any other time of year.
