The best packing cubes for travel

Briggs & riley check in packing cube set.

This set is designed specifically for check-in luggage, but we also love it in a cabin bag.

The larger cube has room for plenty of clothing and is slightly smaller than the size of a standard cabin bag compartment — you could happily pack for a weekend trip in here, with your shoes in the medium sized cube.

This is a good option for packing straight into your suitcase and then separating out some specific items (an important dress, or dirty laundry, for example).

These are thicker than the average packing cube and utilise double zips, so they're a good pick for shoes and electronics as well as clothing.

The smaller one is also ideal to keep in your handbag or as a first aid kit.

Antler’s smart cubes come with compression zips meaning you can expand each to the size required, whether that’s packing for an overnight stay or a two-week holiday.

We found the small cubes fitted 14 pairs of socks when fully expanded, while the largest cube easily fit five t-shirts. The sturdy wipe-clean fabric and mesh top are the ideal combination of durability and easy visibility, too.

We found all four cubes slotted into suitcases, cabin bags and soft bags easily, but the range of sizes mean you can also mix and match depending on your luggage. They also look and feel premium, making them a great gift idea for frequent travellers.

This sleek set of organisers is a practical choice for family travel: it includes eight cubes featuring a mesh top for visibility inside, and handles to help you unpack items quickly.

There's a cube large enough for jeans, one for tops, another for shoes and a separate organiser for your toiletries. This thoughtful set even includes a laundry bag — this is the level of organisation we like!

For something a little different (or a great gift for walkers ), Ordnance Survey's cool set comes with mapping for the highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis), Wales (Snowdon) and England (Scafell Pike).

There are three cubes and they're made from sturdy, lightweight polyester, with two-way zips and grab handles.

You can always rely on Osprey for durable travel kit. When it comes to packing cubes for backpacks or carry-on luggage, we reach for this lightweight set.

It's made from recycled fabric which is light but surprisingly durable, and the small cube in this set is particularly useful for the little bits and bobs you might want to keep handy: chargers, cables, wires, headphones and the like.

Once you've filled these cubes, you'll be left with a little space in a standard cabin bag, and they're easy to squish around a bit thanks to their lightweight material.

These packing cubes allow you to pack more into your case thanks to the compression zips. They reduce the cube's size by up to 60%, and their design helps hold the shape of the organiser, however much you're packing in.

The set includes an extra large, large, one medium and two slim cubes, as well as a laundry bag.

Peak Design’s packing cubes are a terrific pick if you want a light and compressible design with a lot of versatility. We tried out the medium, small and shoe pouch, and we’re impressed at how much can fit into the medium size option.

It can happily fit 10 t-shirts with a little room for more, but it doesn’t feel quite as small as some others once compressed.

The nylon and polyester outer fabric is strong without being thick or heavy, which we think is ideal for packing cubes, and we like how the cubes each have a separate pocket for dirty clothes. The zip doesn’t fully close by design, coming close to closing and having two pull tabs that make it easy to open the cubes quickly.

We don’t think this is a major downside but it’s worth noting because the zips on overstuffed cubes can open by themselves. We also didn’t have any trouble fitting a pair of formal shoes in the dedicated pouch.

These cubes are expensive, but we think they’re an excellent option for lightweight organisation as they’re durable, easy to compress and have that handy extra pocket. We wouldn’t mind if they came in a few more sizes, though.

If your top priority for your packing cubes is how tough and sturdy they are, we’re impressed by the durable materials used by Gomatic.

We tried the medium size and found it able to fit eight t-shirts at maximum capacity, and while it took some squeezing to close the zip, it felt very secure to use. We like the strong handle and how you can view your clothes through the mesh on the front, and it allows for good airflow.

The only downside is that it isn’t quite as easy to tell the compression zips apart from the identical main zip as we’ve found on other cubes, but that’s a small critique of otherwise excellent premium packing cubes.

How to use packing cubes

The most common use for packing cubes is to organise types of clothing within a suitcase or weekend bag .

You can use them to keep occasionwear away from the rest of your luggage, dirty, clunky shoes contained, or the clothes you've worn separate from the ones you haven't.

Some smaller packing cubes and pouches lend themselves to other essentials like electronics and chargers, first aid kits or toiletry bags; some are particularly made with hand luggage in mind.

Whichever packing cubes you choose, you'll find multiple uses for them. They may be meant for travel, but there are many uses for them around the house the rest of the time, too.

The best packing cubes: the verdict

Briggs & Riley's check-in set took top spot as our favourite packing cubes overall, thanks to versatile sizing and durability. There is just the right amount of room in this set to comfortably pack for a weekend trip, and the larger cube slots well into a cabin bag. They also have a more luxurious feel than most other packing cubes — they are, however, expensive.

If you're packing for all the family or taking a long-haul trip, Betllemory's eight-piece set is a good option for you.

Osprey's packing cubes are particularly lightweight and malleable, so they're a safe bet for most types of luggage — they'll work for backpacks, suitcases and weekenders — but you may need more space than these cubes can give you for anything longer than a weekend trip.

For durability, choose Gomatic , but Eono's set is great for space-saving compression (ideal when there's lots to pack). Peak Design's are most versatile.

Tips for Buying Luggage Straps

Choose a size that can work for all of your luggage.

Before buying luggage straps, measure your luggage and make sure that the straps you’re buying will fit your luggage. Most luggage straps are adjustable, so you should be fine, but you’ll want to do a quick measure just to make sure. If you have multiple pieces of luggage, consider a strap with a wide measurement range to fit all of your bags.

Consider a color that will stand out

Don’t go with basic black straps. Most luggage straps now come in a wide range of bright colors and patterns, making it easier for you to identify your bag in a flash — and hopefully keeping anyone else from accidentally grabbing your bag. Consider a unique color or print that will help you find your bag fast.

Consider whether or not you need a locking luggage strap

Some suitcases already have a built-in, TSA-approved lock, but if yours doesn’t, a locking luggage strap could be a worthwhile layer of added security. It’s not going to prevent theft, as someone could just slide your luggage strap off, but it could deter a thief looking to quickly grab a bag.

Luggage straps are made to keep your suitcase closed in case the zipper breaks. Secure it tight enough so that if the zipper breaks, your suitcase will remain closed. They also function as a means for identifying your luggage in baggage claim and personalizing your luggage so someone else doesn’t accidentally grab it. 

They aren’t necessary, but they can add an extra layer of security and keep your bags closed in case the zipper breaks. They’re also great for identifying your bag at baggage claim, and latching together multiple bags for easier transportation.

Yes, luggage straps are TSA-approved, but that doesn’t mean that TSA might not remove your luggage straps to inspect your bag. A locking luggage strap will have a TSA-approved lock that can be unlocked by TSA.
