How to Choose Kruger National Park Game Drives

Kruger National Park game drives are fantastic and insightful ways to travel around the park.  Rangers will often astound you with their keen animal spotting skills and point out wildlife you may have missed had you been driving yourself.

Kruger National Park game drive

Your safari vehicle will typically be an open-sided four wheel drive.  Your ranger will tell you some really interesting stories along the way too. A ranger once told us he watched a 24 hour battle between a lion and a buffalo!

Once you’ve booked on a Kruger National Park game drive, all you have to do is turn up at the designated time and place that your tour departs from and let the ranger take care of the rest!

Game driving tours are a good option if you’re staying just outside Kruger National Park and want someone else to drive you through it, rather than doing your own self-drive safari.

Check out these top game drive tours on GetYourGuide. Each game drive has pictures showing the kind of up close with wildlife experience you may have as well as reviews by fellow travellers who have tried them.

  • Morning game drive
  • Afternoon game drive
  • Full day game drive

SANParks game drives

South African National Parks (SANParks) run game drives lead by a Kruger Park ranger. Your options for doing this are going on one of the Park & Ride tours which leave from select Kruger Park entrance gates.

Park & Ride tours are morning and afternoon drives and currently run from:

  • Paul Kruger Gate
  • Phabeni Gate

Private lodge game drives

If you’re staying at a private lodge in Kruger National Park, game drives will most likely be included in your safari package.

Staying overnight in Kruger Park – game drive choices

A ranger will drive you in an open-sided four wheel drive out of your rest camp and into the park.

The game drive options are:

  • Early morning drives
  • Sunset drives
  • Night drives

Early morning drives leave well before dawn. If you don’t fancy getting up that early, you could go on a sunset or night drive. A part of each of these drives will be in the dark and are the only way to go on safari at night. Catch a glimpse of nocturnal animals on a driving tour!

It’s a lot harder spotting animals at night than in the day. Your ranger will give you lights to shine into the bush. Look for the reflecting eyes of the animals. If you see one, shout “stop” to the ranger. Then the ranger will help you identify the animal.

Sometimes you might not see any nocturnal animals at all. There’s still a really good chance of seeing an animal though. On one Kruger Park night drive, we saw a hippo running across the road. It was a very funny sight!

You might only get a fleeting glimpse of some animals because your view is limited by the torchlight. Plus animals run into the bush when they see you coming. Despite this, a game drive is definitely worth going on. It’s an amazing and daunting experience knowing that you’re out in the open in a game park at night!

Game drives leave or come back after the rest camp gates open or close. So you must be staying overnight at the rest camp that your game drive leaves from.

Children under 6 aren’t allowed on game drives.

Game driving tour from within Kruger National Park depart from:

All day drives

There is also an all day drive, but you have to book it 2 months in advance! You’ll hire a vehicle and a driver for an entire day and go to parts of the park that tourists don’t normally access.

Game drive comforts

You can take a drink and a snack to eat on game drives.

There might be a toilet stop on the game drive, but it may be at an unfenced picnic site. We prefer to go before leaving on our game drive so we don’t have to worry about what’s lurking in the toilet block! But don’t worry too much if you do need to go. The ranger will check the toilets for creatures before you use it!

It can be cool in the open-sided tour vehicle, even in summer. Take a jacket just in case it gets a bit chilly. In winter, rug up!

If you’re on a budget, Kruger National Park game drives are cheaper tour options than tours on foot.

What makes Lion Roar Safaris so unique ?

It is simple really. We have an immense passion for the African Bush and an even greater passion for people. This is the perfect combination. We love what we do and we want to share the magic of the Kruger National Park with our wonderful guests.

Why is it called a game drive?

“Game” refers to wild animals or wildlife and the word “drive” refers to a vehicle driving people around in a specific place, for example, a game drive in the Kruger National Park to view the wildlife in their natural habitat. Combined it is known as a game drive, also better known as a safari.

Did you know? The Kruger National Park is the largest nature reserve in South Africa and one of the most popular nature reserves to visit in the world.

Book your Kruger game drive and book our Professional Personal Holiday Photographer to capture your safari as it unfolds

In addition to our Kruger overnight safari packages, activities, accommodation and Full day Kruger safaris we provide a unique option where our guests can hire out the service of one of our Photographers. We call it the PPHP – Professional Personal Holiday Photographer . This service allows guests to fully enjoy the safari without having to experience the safari through their smartphone camera or lens as it happens. The guests don’t need to buy huge expensive telephoto wildlife lenses and camera gear, nor do they need to travel with this kind of equipment or take out special insurance or do special photographic courses to learn how to operate them.

All the guests need to do is sit back and relax whilst the photographer (PPHP) take the photos of the safari as it unfolds.

We like to call it “real-time photography”; for example, if the guest sees a lion but were only able to see the tail of the animal, the guest will only receive a photo of the image that they saw on the day.

Our photographers work closely alongside our guides and have a vast knowledge of the African bush as well. They know animal behavior and can anticipate such behavior. This improves the chances of providing the photographer with more opportunities to capture more in the moment wildlife images.

The PPHP service is affordable and will cost the guest a fraction of the price if they had to go and purchase a small, reliable “point and shoot” camera.

From feedback received from our guests on TripAdvisor , they really enjoyed this add-on extra as it really creates a unique opportunity where they can fully enjoy the safari in the moment.

Fantastic experience We really enjoyed our safari with Liz and the web photographer. They pointed out many sightings which we would never have seen on our own. We saw 3 leopards, many elephants, rhinos, cape buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos and different types of antelopes and birds. They provided binoculars which helped a lot, especially when observing the leopards in the reed! The service is top: on time, friendly, very informative and you get a feeling how much they enjoy “going the extra mile” for the customer. They tried to keep ahead of the crowd and do not enter thru Numbi gate which is usually very crowded. Its great the park fee is included in the price because then you do not need to queue at the entrance like in the case of some of the other operators. We will definitely recommend you!

Great services! Amazing commments The guide was very friendly and helpful! She really knew the way around the park and we were able to see a big variety of animals
Super accommodating and informative. Liz was super patient in making sure we get the morning bush walk and night drive within limited dates. They know lots about every animal we saw. I love that they provide parkas for their guests because it gets super chilly as the truck moves. Their truck is clean and not loud like other trucks which tend to scare the animals away.
Spectacular day in the Mighty Kruger! Even if the weather was cold during the day, the spectacular sightings we had made up for it all. Luckily this company is not one of those that rush from one big sighting to another but rather take it at a slower pace and therefore not miss even the small things like some bird species and trees and plants, lizards and much more. Oh and I am so glad their Photographer was also on board with her very sharp eye sight. She spotted plenty of animals where the rest of us missed them…especially that Cheetah! And she took the most beautiful pictures (and some short videos clips) of all our sightings that day. We were surely one lucky group of people seeing all those magnificent wildlife, especially the Elephant Calves, Wild Dogs as well as Hyena Pups! Oh and let’s not forget the snack bags that was packed for us!! The Guide was very informative and interactive with our group. Evidently her kindness and helpfulness is not only restricted to the time a guest is on her vehicle still busy on the Tour but even helping when one of our group members was staying over at a place in the Kruger Park, she assisted him from booking in at the camp to taking him to where he would be staying, to briefly showing him around on what is where and available to him in the camp. And this all took merely a few minutes. I would definitely be recommending Lion Roar Safaris.
Best experience ever! Lizelle was very informative and made sure we had the best views of all the animals!
Lizelle was the most amazing tour guide. She knew everything about the animals and gave us plenty of time to take photos and ask questions while still ensuring that we saw 4 of the big 5. She was just as excited as we were to view the animals. Without using a radio she was knowledgeable enough to know where to look and how to spot the animals even in the summer bush. Liz was there to help point out animals as well. We were pleasantly surprised to have two guides to make this experience incredible. The vehicle was as impeccable as the guides. They even provided snacks that can easily substitute lunch. The cherry on top is the fleece lined ponchos that kept us warm as it was a bit chilly and a little rainy.
Amazing safari and the best guide! We did a lot of research and chose Lion’s Roar based on it and were spot on with our choice! To my own shame, I cannot remember the name of our guide because it’s been a few months since he experience, but she truly rocked – she was knowledgable, funny and easygoing. We got very-very lucky on the day we went and saw elephants, rhinos, wild dogs, hippos, numerous birds and other animals. We went again just with friends and saw hardly anything, so do yourself a favor and book with these guys!
We loved it! Liz was so great! Without a doubt, she made our trip a lot better than it would have been otherwise. She was knowledgeable and really wanted us to have a good time.
Professional, great knowledge of all types of Wildlife, friendly and affordable!
Friendly, professional, safari guides 1
Best safari company in the Kruger! I want to congratulate Lion Roar Safaris once again for taking me on safari to the Kruger. I had a spur of the moment urge to go on a safari. Even though it was a last minute booking, they were stil happy to accommodate me. It’s always nice to just sit back and relax while everything is taken care of. For me, it is always a special occasion going to the Park. It’s the perfect opportunity to relax and recharge my batteries. Best of all, I learn something new everytime I go with Lion Roar Safaris. Every safari with this company is unique. Everyone should do a guided safari with them atleast once in their lives otherwise you are missing out! Keep up the good work Lion Roar and see you again soon for another safari adventure!
Wonderful safari experience in the Kruger National Park! What an experience. The finer touch and extra service makes it very special. Neat vehicle and well organised logistics. Knowlegable, friendly and professional two ladies. Highly recommended. This safari in the National Kruger Park was definitely a highlight of my year. Well done !
Memorable Father’s Day in the Kruger National Park Usually I end up in the beautiful Nelspruit to see clients and to deal with work-related responsibilities. This year, my husband and I returned for a well-deserved holiday break. Yes, we came back and it is our second time doing a safari with Lion Roar Safaris, but this time I brought along the kids, my father and mother. One big happy family outing! We booked the safari on Father’s Day, so my dad can enjoy the Kruger yet again. He hasn’t been to the Kruger for many years, let alone go on safari in an open safari vehicle. Everyone enjoyed it immensely, especially the kids who simply adore all animals. My dad walks with a walking stick and my mother struggles to see & both of them make use of hearing aids. For this reason, we decided to book the safari vehicle privately so we don’t have to share with other people and if the kids misbehave or granny or grandpa can’t hear, we can talk a bit louder. (Even though we know that their company is child and elderly friendly). I’m glad my husband advised me to book it privately, it made it more special. I just want to thank the team at Lion Roar Safaris once again. Everything from start to finish was great! I would also like to thank you for the extra touches you provide to make things comfortable, for example, the extra step that helped mom and dad get on the vehicle, the ponchos and most importantly the patience and professionalism of the guide. We will keep coming back!

The beauty of your stay at Kruger Gate Hotel is your incredible access to the Big 5 animals and game-rich reaches of the southern Kruger Park. We are situated on the bank of the Sabie River, less than a minute’s drive from the Paul Kruger Gate – a safe access point to the Park that offers the most direct route to the Skukuza Camp, known as the ‘Capital’ of the Kruger Park, and to the Skukuza Airport. With a history dating back to 1898, the Kruger National Park is Africa’s second-oldest game reserve, and at almost 20 000 km2 (over 7500 sq mi) is one of the continent’s largest conservation areas. Kruger is world-famous for its spectacular abundance of wildlife and outstanding safari experiences. It is home to 147 species of large mammals, a greater diversity than any other game reserve in Africa.  With 517 recorded avian species, Kruger is also a bird-watching paradise.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience never to be forgotten.

The Open Game Vehicle Safari Experience in Kruger Park

safari kruger game drive

There are a few ways of experiencing the vast expanses and array of wildlife on an Kruger Park safari, such as walking and self-drive safaris, but for the real up close and personal experience, the open safari vehicle takes a lot of beating.

During the drive the ranger's knowledge and first-hand experience will ensure the ultimate Kruger Park wildlife safari and you will learn of all aspects of the wilderness. The ranger will also know how close to particular animals he can get.

The ranger is usually assisted by a tracker who sits up front on the vehicle and relays information to the guide from what he reads in the signs of the wilderness around him. The trackers are mostly people who have grown up in the area and know the bush and its intricacies intimately. In most parks and wilderness areas in Africa the wildlife has become so acclimatised to safari vehicles that they barely even acknowledge the presence of the vehicles, allowing visitors to get front row seats to the greatest show on earth.

Breaking the Profile

The animals of Kruger Park may have acclimatised to open safari vehicles but the threat of humans is still very much alive and any indication of human presence is swiftly dealt with by running away or charging the offending parties.

This is one of the many reasons why the advice of the rangers is so important to follow as they have local knowledge of the behaviour of animals in their area, and what is okay in one area is not necessarily okay in another area. All this adds to the excitement of getting up close to an animal.

One of the main things the ranger will discuss in the opening briefing is the issue of standing up in the vehicle and how this will affect the animals. The animals are wild and as such they still have the inherent fear of humans - and standing up in the safari vehicle will break the profile of the vehicle that the animals have become used to. This will ensure that the animal runs away, or becomes aggressive.

There can surely be no more dramatic way to view the African wildlife than from a vantage point a mere few meters away, with an unhindered 360 degree view of the sky and wide horizons. There are many unbelievable experiences in Kruger Park but game viewing from an open safari vehicle is certainly one of the highlights.

Cost of Safari in Kruger National Park | Game Drives

Below are a few factors that contribute to the cost of a Kruger Park game drive. These factors are important to keep in mind when planning an excursion through the reserve.

  • Private vehicles and exclusive tours: Choosing a private vehicle will include only you and whoever you are traveling with. While this is a great idea for avoiding crowds of tourists this option will be slightly more expensive.
  • The time of year: When you decide to travel will also contribute to the cost of game drives. During the rainy summer months, plant life is thriving and tourists throng the reserve. Peak tourist season is usually when the prices of game drives around Kruger will increase. Not to mention, public holidays and school holidays are also busier periods, and prices are inflated.
  • Length of game drive: Kruger Park safari tours that include game drives can last anywhere between 3hrs to 5 days. While a short afternoon drive can be a pleasant experience, some prefer the longer tours for the extra chances to spot wild animals. The 2+ day game drives include the cost of accommodation and private transport.

Home » Self-Drive Safari in Kruger National Park, South Africa (Detailed Guide)

If you’re looking for somewhere to completely indulge in the wildlife, look no further! The Kruger National Park in South Africa is one of our all-time favorite adventure spots. And it’s hard to imagine why it wouldn’t be.

With almost 8000 square miles of spectacular landscapes, you’ll have the opportunity of spotting the infamous big-5, cheetahs, wild dogs, giraffes, and over 500 bird species.

And the best way to see it all? It has to be driving through the park. There are plenty of safaris that run through the Kruger, but what enough of us don’t consider is taking our own cars.

SELF-DRIVE SAFARI IN KRUGER NATIONAL PARK, SOUTH AFRICA

Taking a self-drive can be leisurely, affordable and done at your own pace. Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with safari’s, we’ll share all of our secrets to a successful self-drive through Africa’s favorite game park.

Tip: Check out our ultimate guide to Travelling South Africa with Kids .

Self-Drive Safari in the Kruger National Park, South Africa

Self-drive safaris are an awesome way to explore the park if you’re looking for something to suit your own interests. It gives you the freedom to take as long as you please and enjoy some quality family time.

Self-Drive Safari in the Kruger National Park, South Africa

Self-drives offer flexibility to explore whatever region of the park you’re interested in. Some regions are known for their large rhino population, while another could be ideal for spotting wild-dogs. Depending on what animals you’re looking to spot, taking your own car makes it possible to see it all.

It’s easy to find your way around the park; the tracks are all extremely visible and the Kruger is generally a busy place. It’s made simple with guided routes and maps that are readily available at all the park entrances.

What’s also a great idea is carpooling through the park. If you’re with a big group of people, rent some walkie-talkies to make spotting the animals easier. Be sure to check the wildlife spot boards before you enter the park (and the rest camps) to see where the wildlife was last spotted during the day.

Kruger National Park Cost

What’s great about the Kruger is that your budget doesn’t stop you from experiencing the wild. Of course, Safaris can be incredibly expensive, with luxury lodges, game drives, and fine dining. But for the majority of us, something a little more budget-friendly sounds perfect.

Kruger National Park Cost

Opting for a self-drive safari is a great way to bring down the costs, and probably allow more freedom to spend the cash on accommodation or some of your other travel expenses. So what are the costs involved for visiting the Kruger National Park?

Kruger National Park Entrance Fees

If you’re not staying at some of the park’s lodges, you’ll be paying a daily conservation fee. The entrance fee grants you access for 1 day and is priced in South African Rands.

Kruger National Park Entrance Fees

The park has 10 different entrances that you’re able to pay the entrance fee. The Kruger National Park prices vary each year, these are the fees for 2020.

South African Citizens (with a Valid SA Passport)

Here are the South African Citizen’s entrance fees:

  • $7 USD / R100 per adult
  • $3,50 USD / R50 per child

Standard Conservation Fee

Here are the standard fees for overseas travelers:

  • $28 USD / R400 per adult
  • $14 USD / R200 per child

Gate Opening and Closing Times:

  • Nov-Jan:         05:30 – 18:30
  • Feb:                 05:30 – 18:30
  • Mar & Oct:      05:30 – 18:00
  • Apr:                 06:00 – 17:30
  • May-Jul:          06:00 – 17:30
  • Aug-Sept:        06:00 – 18:00

There’s considered to be 4 main activity times in the park; early morning, day-time, late afternoon and night-time. Most of the action happens early in the morning and late at night, which is when the animals start feeding.

To maximize your experience, you’ll need to get an early start, and then try to end as late as possible.

Kruger National Park Bookings

Although it’s possible to pay for your entrance once you’ve arrived at the park, it’s best to pre-book this kind of stuff. Booking online is simple and you’ll receive a 5% discount for your accommodation and camping.

Kruger National Park Bookings

The park only gives out a limited number of passes a day, and the park is usually busy no matter what the season. So put this at the top of your checklist and then there’s no need to worry about missing out.

Kruger National Park Lodges Prices

If you’re opting for a self-drive, be aware that driving takes up a lot of your time. It’s best to consider spending the night at the park; whether it’s camping or staying at a lodge. Trust us, there’s a lot to see in the park and you’re not always guaranteed to spot the animals you came to see.

Kruger National Park Lodges Prices

To avoid disappointment, try booking your accommodation at the park. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and definitely worth the money. Prices range anywhere from USD $100 to well over USD $1000 per person per night.

Kruger National Park Lodge

Visiting Kruger National Park

Kruger Park can get super busy, especially during the school holidays. The best times to visit the park are the dry season, from May to September. It’s South Africa’s winter and the park doesn’t get much rain during winter.

Visiting Kruger National Park

Eventually, the veld starts to thin out and the waterholes begin to dry out. The thin grass makes it easier to spot the animals, and the low water supply means the animals congregate at waterholes. Waterholes are the perfect spots to park the cars and watch the animals rehydrate.

What to do in Kruger National Park

High seasons are in December through to January, and June to August. We’d probably recommend not going during those seasons if you’re self-driving through the park. The trails can get really busy and you’ll often have to wait in long lines in your car (and trust us, that’s not always fun to do in the African sun).

Kruger National Park Safari - Animals to see on your self-drive safari

October to April is when things start getting greener, with beautiful and lush scenery. Animal spotting isn’t that great though, but what is great is that it’s baby season for the animals! You might get lucky and spot some baby ellies or lion cubs.

How to Get to Kruger National Park

So where is Kruger National Park located? It’s one of the biggest game reserves in the world, which spans the Northern provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

How to Get to Kruger National Park

Look North and South of the park and you’ll find 2 incredible rivers, the Limpopo River and Crocodile River. Rivers are worth taking a drive to because of the thriving wildlife found here which you don’t see inland.

Getting to the park is simple, whether you’re flying or driving…

Flying:

If you’re in Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg you’ll be able to catch a flight directly to the park. These are private scheduled flights and you’ll need to book in advance if flying is easier for you.

If you’re not flying, take the scenic route and have a road trip. Because you’re doing a self-drive, renting a car from a city and driving makes more sense.

If you’re arriving at an airport and heading straight to the park, you’ll find numerous car rental services. Be sure to rent a 4×4 to get a higher vantage point.

Here’s a guide to reaching the park’s main entrances , as well as how long the journey takes.

Driving from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park

Johannesburg is the closest big city to the park and also a great city to tour before the Kruger. The drive from Joburg is about 260 miles to reach the Southern Gate and it’ll probably take you about 4-6 hours.

Driving from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park

Check out the current prices for car rental in Johannesburg City Centre here . Make sure to get a quote for the car with a GPS navigation system and (if traveling with little one) with a  right size travel car seat .

Leaving the city you’ll head on the main road towards Nelspruit. Along the way, there are gas stations, shops, and restaurants to keep the journey easy.

Be sure to fill up your car at the petrol stations along the way. If you’ve got some spare time stopover in Nelspruit, there are a few good adventure experiences, like cave exploring and abseiling.

From Nelspruit, you’ll drive on to White River, and while there isn’t much there, there are some spectacular viewpoints on the hills. You’re now about a 40-minute drive towards reaching one the Kruger’s entrance gate.

Final Tips and Tricks for Your Self-Drive Kruger National Park Safari

Self-driving should be experienced by us all at least once in our lives, and know you know how easy it can be. Here are some final things to remember so that you’ll have the best time possible in the park.

Final Tips and Tricks for Your Self-Drive Kruger National Park Safari

1. Have a Good Plan

Plan your visit around the action hours, when the animals begin to wake up and then towards the evening when the animals start getting hungry again.

2. Always Stay in the Car

Unless you’ve reached a ‘get-out’ spot, it’s important to stay in the vehicle. These ‘get-out’ spots are considered safe areas that can be used for picnics, getting some fresh air and admiring the bush’s beauty.

Kruger National Park - Always Stay in the Car

If you’re interested in experiencing the wildlife outside your car, consider going on a walking tour.

3. Bring the supplies along

It’s going to be a long day in the car, and you’ll want to be prepared. Here are some of the essentials you can’t be forgetting:

  • Bug spray (for the summer season)
  • Self-drive routes and maps
  • Warm jackets from the evenings
  • Snacks for the car
  • Other travel accessories
  • Buy a map at the souvenir shop before entering the park

Summary for Your Self-Drive Safari

You’re convinced already, right?  The game drives are so much better than going to zoos. The experience of being able to witness animals in their natural habitat and doing their daily business can’t be compared to anything else.

Day 1: Arrive in Johannesburg, South Africa

Welcome to South Africa! Sawabona! Molo! Dumela! Just a few ways to say “Hello” in three out of the 11 official languages in South Africa. Your adventure kicks off in the vibrant city of Johannesburg, where you will be greeted with a warm African welcome at the airport, before being transferred to your hotel for the night. Meet your fellow travelers and tour leader for a trip briefing, before enjoying an authentic South African dinner at a family-owned grill house, where the flavors of the nation's rich culinary heritage come to life.

Local tip : Don't miss the chance to taste boerewors, a mouthwatering spiced South African sausage or indulge in the delicate flavors of springbok carpaccio — a true local delicacy.

Day 2: Journey to Greater Kruger National Park

Begin your day with an early drive to the Greater Kruger National Park, where your arrival is perfectly timed for a welcome lunch at your luxurious retreat for the next three nights. Nestled within a private reserve, this lodge blends seamlessly with its untamed surroundings, offering an unparalleled connection to the wild. Each chalet boasts first-class amenities, including private en suites, indoor and outdoor showers, air-conditioning and a swimming pool for those refreshing dips.

Later in the afternoon, embark on your first 4x4 game drive in a neighboring reserve. Feel the exhilaration as you encounter majestic wildlife in their natural habitat, with the possibility of crossing paths with a few of our favorite African friends. As the day draws to a close, return to the lodge, where the sounds of the African night will lull you into a peaceful sleep.

Local tip : Unwind on one of the viewing decks to soak in the breathtaking panoramas of the Drakensberg Mountains — a towering range of rugged peaks and dramatic cliffs, and home to the world's most extensive and well-preserved rock art, created by the San people thousands of years ago.

Day 3: Explore the depths of Kruger National Park

Begin your day with an early rise, as you head off into the heart of the Kruger National Park. Upon entering this iconic wilderness, get ready for an unforgettable encounter with Africa’s famed "Big Five." Enjoy a packed breakfast at a picturesque picnic spot, surrounded by untouched beauty. Your day unfolds with an exclusive, full-day wildlife safari, where you'll stop at waterholes and prime viewing points to marvel at these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. The park’s diverse landscape — ranging from savannah to mixed acacia woodlands, rocky hills and mopane forests — creates a breathtaking backdrop for your adventure.

As the sun sets, return to the lodge, where you can unwind and recount the day’s most extraordinary moments, reliving the magic of your safari experience.

Local tip : As one of Southern Africa’s largest and most renowned game reserves, Kruger National Park offers a sanctuary to more than just the "Big Five." Be captivated by the sight of over 500 bird species, 100 species of reptiles and 150 species of mammals, including the endangered African wild dog, majestic herbivores like hippos, zebras and giraffes, as well as a variety of antelope species.

Day 4: Enjoy a full-day safari in Kruger National Park & evening bonfire

Return to Kruger National Park for another exhilarating game drive, offering a chance to spot any wildlife that may have been missed from the day before. As the sun sets, your adventure concludes with an intimate dinner with the best views, from one of the lodge's viewing decks.

Enjoy your meal as you listen to the symphony of the bush, perhaps even catching the distant roar of a lion. Afterward, head off to enjoy a crackling bonfire under the canopy of stars.

Local tip : Take a moment to look up at the African night sky and count the shooting stars.

Day 5: Say goodbye to South Africa & hello to Zimbabwe

Rise early and head to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, where you’ll bid farewell to South Africa before boarding a mid-morning flight to Livingstone, Zambia — your gateway to the breathtaking Victoria Falls.

Upon arrival, cross the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge into Zimbabwe and marvel at the magnificent cascades for the first time. Continue to your lodge, which offers unparalleled views of pristine wilderness and a waterhole which is visited by majestic elephants, buffalo, kudu and more. Spend the afternoon unwinding by the pool or enjoying wildlife sightings from any of the lodge’s viewing decks.

In the evening, you’ll embark on an intimate Sundowner River Cruise along the Zambezi River where you’ll glide through the shallow waters and islands just above the mighty falls. Enjoy canapés and sundowners prepared by your personal chef as the captain navigates the tranquil river, offering a truly unforgettable experience.

Local tip : Kick back in your lounge chair and spot crocodiles basking on the banks or find elephants and hippos in their natural habitat.

Day 6: Feel the spray of Victoria Falls

In the morning, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the awe-inspiring grandeur of Victoria Falls — an unrivaled natural marvel that creates the largest sheet of falling water in the world when in full flow. Your guide will escort you through the park, unveiling the falls’ rich history and leading you to exclusive vantage points for breathtaking views. Next you’ll make your way to Chobe National Park in Botswana where you’ll enjoy a leisurely afternoon in Kasane town, Alternatively, relax by the pool overlooking the Chobe River, enjoying another African sunset. If you’re in search of more adventure, consider an optional afternoon game drive in Chobe National Park. Local tip : Look out for an encounter with wandering warthogs while in Kasane Town.

Day 7: Wander through Chobe National Park

Start your day with an exciting game drive through Chobe National Park, Botswana's first designated national park and renowned for its impressive populations of elephants and buffalo. During your safari, witness these majestic creatures gather at the waterholes, before returning to the lodge for breakfast to fuel up for the next adventure.

In the afternoon, indulge in a scenic cruise along the enchanting Chobe River. This serene journey offers exceptional wildlife viewing, from saddle-billed storks and malachite kingfishers to fish eagles and colorful bee-eaters. Enjoy hippos and crocodiles in their natural habitat, and witness large herds of elephants gracefully crossing the river.

It’s the last night of your African adventure so take a moment to reflect on what the animal kingdom has taught you, as you take in the breathtaking sunset over the river, making for a truly unforgettable experience.

Local tip : Be sure to truly soak up the elephant sightings because the Chobe River is one of the best places in Africa to see large herds of elephants. During the dry season, thousands of elephants migrate to the river for water, making it an incredible spot for witnessing these majestic creatures up close as they gather along the riverbanks.

Day 8: Say farewell

Your African adventure comes to an end after breakfast, but the memories made will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

If you would like to spend more time in Chobe, or Victoria Falls, additional accommodation can be arranged.

Transfers to Kasane Airport, Livingstone Airport or Victoria Falls Airport can be arranged at an additional cost, for your trip back to Johannesburg, South Africa.

All packages are dependent on each traveler's needs and will be curated upon request.

Trip overview

  • Experience a private game reserve in an open top 4x4 vehicle
  • Enjoy traditional South African cuisine while dining under the stars
  • Try to spot the Big Five in Kruger National Park on a full day game drive
  • Stay in a comfortable safari lodge in a communal setting with friendly hosts
  • Visit the awesome Blyde River Canyon and view the Three Rondavels on your return trip to Johannesburg
  • This itinerary starts and finishes in Johannesburg and includes 2 long travel days.
  • On Short Breaks, you maintain a good level of independence and freedom, with the added bonus of having the details sorted out for you. You’ll have lots of free time and you won’t be accompanied by a Trip Leader. This means that all included activities and tours will be run by different local Intrepid partners, and these may operate independently from each other. The included activities and transfers will operate on a join-in basis, which means that you could have your Adventure all to yourself, or others may join you along the way. If you would prefer to travel in a group with a dedicated Trip Leader, just get in touch with your booking agent and they will take you through some alternatives.
  • The transport to and from Kruger National Park will be in a 13-seater minivan. This is a shuttle service that departs daily. You may be sharing this shuttle ride with other travellers booked on different trips and itineraries to you.

Our lodge is located within the Greater Kruger Park ecosystem. It’s about a 50 minute drive to Kruger National Park’s Orpen Gate. On this itinerary you will have Game Drives in both the Kruger National Park and neighbouring Private Game Reserves.

  • As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
  • Regardless of where you stay, power cuts and breaks in hot water are sometimes unavoidable, as in any developing country. In particular, South Africa suffers from load-shedding: rolling blackouts that are engineered specifically to share out available power in the region.

After some time to settle in, head off on a 3 hour afternoon game drive in open 4x4 vehicles in a private game reserve. Enjoy the thrill of spotting a impala, zebra, giraffe or lion, among other animals. Here you're likely to see any of the species that one may encounter in Kruger, since there are no boundary fences between the reserve and Kruger itself. Mid way through the safari stop for drinks at one of the waterholes before continuing the game drive into the early evening.

Explore Kruger National Park Like a Pro: The Ideal Months for Your Safari

F iguring out the best time to visit Kruger National Park isn’t rocket science; it’s trickier (ok, likely not, but there is still a lot to think about).

Trust us, we’ve danced with lions, figuratively speaking, not once but thrice. And Kruger isn’t your average backyard zoo where animals parade on schedule.

Instead, it’s a vast wilderness that plays by its own rules, governed by the whims of weather and wildlife. So navigating this can be a bit of a puzzle for the uninitiated traveler itching for the ultimate safari experience.

But fear not, dear adventurer, because you’ve got seasoned Kruger veterans here. Stick with us, and you’ll discover that timing your visit just right unlocks the magic of Kruger.

Best Time To Visit Kruger National Park, South Africa

The undeniable best time of year to visit Kruger National Park swings into action from May through September.

Yeah, you heard that right. While folks in the U.S. are flipping burgers on their summer BBQs, down in the Southern Hemisphere, they’re rolling in the sweet spot of Kruger’s winter wonderland—sans the snow, of course.

Now, why does this chilly period steal the spotlight as the primo time to invade Kruger with your binoculars and safari hats? Let’s take a look.

The word “dry” might not sound too glamorous unless we’re talking about wine or humor, but in Kruger, it’s pure gold.

The drier conditions coax all sorts of majestic beasts towards the watering holes, transforming these spots into the hottest animal mixers you’ve never been invited to. Elephants, lions, leopards—you name it, they’re all there, having a sip, and you’ve got front-row tickets.

And the sparse and dry brush works better for us than any high-definition binoculars ever could. With less green fluff in the way, spotting wildlife becomes less of a “Is that something behind that tree?” situation and more of an “Oh, there’s an impala, and there’s a rhino!” kind of day.

Basically, the visibility now is unmatched compared to the dense summer foliage that obstructs the view.

While the winter in Kruger might sound as intimidating as facing a charging rhino, it’s actually pretty mild.

The days are comfortably cool but not the “I can’t feel my face” cold. This makes it perfect for long drives or walks, as you won’t dissolve into a puddle of sweat.

Plus, fewer mosquitos buzzing around means more peace of mind and less slapping yourself silly. Coming in the winter means less concern about malaria.

May to September in Kruger is not just cool; it’s epic—literally and figuratively.

We checked out the scene during August and September and, boy, did we score big time. The weather was playing its finest tunes, sunny with a chance of “Wow, is that a lion?” and the animals didn’t disappoint.

These two months turned our safari game into “Has anyone seen my dropped jaw?”

Now, if you’re a weather nerd or just plain curious, we’re breaking down the weather conditions month by month, revealing why the months between May and September rank as the best times to visit Kruger National Park .

Don’t mind our weird brains starting with November. We decided to do it by seasons rather than a calendar year.

November & December (Summer)

Alright, let us impart some wisdom for those adventurous souls looking to hit Kruger National Park in November and December.

The sun’s blazing hotter than your local barbecue grill, with temperatures that love to loiter around the 88° F mark. Yes, it’s summer here while you’re probably shoveling snow off your driveway back home.

This is when Kruger transforms into its own version of a tropical paradise, except with more elephants and fewer pina coladas.

Rainy days? Absolutely, it’s the wet season, which means afternoon showers are more regular than your morning coffee routine.

But here’s the silver lining: the park is bursting with life (if you can see it past the foliage).

  • Baby Boom: It’s raining babies! Literally. Many animals choose this season to give birth, giving you an opportunity to enjoy the cutest show on Earth.
  • Migratory Birds Galore: Birdwatchers, bring your guidebooks. The park becomes a VIP club for migratory birds flaunting their exotic feathers.
  • Floral Explosion: For the botanists at heart, the landscape shifts from monochrome to a paint explosion, with wildflowers blooming en masse, making your social feeds look professionally curated.

January, February, & March (Summer)

Stepping into Kruger National Park during January, February, and March is like accidentally gatecrashing Mother Nature’s own spa retreat.

You thought November and December turned the thermostat up? Buddy, you’re barely scratching the surface.

With temperatures often sauntering past the 90° F marker, it’s not just the weather that’s on fire. The heat is relentless, kind of like that one friend who never stops talking about their “epic” gap year.

And yes, the air is as thick with moisture as a steam room due to the frequent rain showers, making everything more soaked than a waterlogged sponge.

But it’s not all soggy sandwiches and wilted umbrellas; the wildlife scenes are something straight out of a high-budget nature documentary.

Animals are everywhere, taking the term “wildlife party” to a whole new level. It’s like the animal version of spring break, but with less regret.

  • Increased Predator Activity: The abundance of newborn animals during this period leads to more frequent sightings of predators in action.
  • Amphibian Anthems: The soundtrack of the season, led by a chorus of frogs that could easily drop the next hot nature mixtape.
  • Insect Invasion: Get ready for the buggy bonanza. High humidity brings out the six-legged critters in full force, turning the park into a bug’s version of Times Square on New Year’s Eve.
  • Discover More: Ever wondered what it’s like to get stared down by a giraffe while you’re searching for your car keys? In Kruger, you’ll encounter more wildlife than an undergrad dormitory .

April (Fall)

April in Kruger National Park plays out like that perfect transitional episode in your favorite TV series, where everything changes, but you can’t help but love the new direction.

It’s the mellow segue into fall—temperatures mosey down to a more comfortable 80° F, making the air in the mornings as crisp as a fresh apple.

The rainy season is packing its bags, so you’ll begin to get the dry, sunny days ideal for wildlife spotting without turning into a human popsicle by night as the lows remain around 60° F.

The animals are out in full force, thanks to the cooler temps.

And the lush landscapes start to thin, making it easier to catch those incredible shots of lions lounging or elephants strutting their stuff.

  • Nighttime Nocturnals: With the onset of cooler evenings, nocturnal animals become more active, offering a glimpse into the secretive life after sunset.
  • Butterfly Bonanza: With the rain gone, butterflies turn Kruger into a live-action fairy tale.
  • Foliage Firework Display: Witness the park’s flora putting on its fall colors, a sight for sore eyes and budding photographers.

May & June (Fall Into Winter)

May and June in the park are like nature’s version of a minimalist lifestyle guru—trimming the fat and leaving only the essentials.

The park has ditched the rain and embraced the dry season with open arms, causing temperatures to dip to a cozy mid-70s° F.

Animals are no longer playing hide and seek with you thanks to the sparse vegetation, making it the start of the best time of year for wildlife voyeurism.

It’s as if the animals got the memo about the dry season and decided to throw daily meet-and-greets around the remaining waterholes, transforming them into the hottest wildlife social hubs.

  • Elephant Parades: Witness the majestic sight of elephant herds as they march towards the waterholes in the cooler hours, a true testament to the wonders of wildlife social structures.
  • Star-studded Nights: Clear skies make for the best Milky Way views, turning nighttime into a celestial spectacle.
  • Fireplace Friendlies: Evening campfires become the social glue of the park. Gather around for warmth, storytelling, and possibly an impromptu wildlife concert in the background. “Bush TV” is one of our favorite activities and we have spent many a night during our trips by the fire and listening to the hyenas calling.
  • Discover More: If you think giraffes are fun, wait until you meet the feathered divas of Kruger – trust me, those colorful birds are rocking more bling than an overenthusiastic teen at a jewelry stand.

July & August (Winter)

July and August in Kruger National Park is the ultimate wildlife reality TV show, minus the dramatic eliminations, of course.

It’s widely celebrated as the best season to visit Kruger National Park, with temperatures playing around 75° F, bringing everyone’s favorite fur-coated celebrities out and about.

It’s dry, folks, so dry that even the cacti are gasping for a sip. This turns the park into a bustling hub of animal activity, with creatures congregating around the few waterholes left because, well, hydration is key.

With every creature, large and small, itching for a spot at the waterhole, the park feels more like a busy watering hole in downtown Savannah than a sleepy nature reserve.

  • Frosty Mornings and Fiery Sunsets: Experience the stark beauty of Kruger with mornings that start with a crisp chill and evenings that conclude with some of the most spectacular sunsets, painting the sky in hues of orange, purple, and pink.
  • The Leopard Lounge: Catch these elusive felines basking in the winter sun. It’s like “I Spy,” but with spots and infinitely cooler.
  • Predator Poker Nights: With the colder months setting in, predators are seen more frequently during the day, making for some heart-racing encounters as they play their survival skills close to the chest.

September & October (Spring)

Welcome to the season when Kruger National Park decides to change its wardrobe and splash on a bit of color. It’s that magical time when the park shakes off the winter chills and dabbles in the art of spring.

Temperatures flirt with the range of 60-85° F, a perfect prelude to the hot summer days. And it’s neither too dry nor too rainy, offering just the right amount of drama in the sky to keep things interesting.

The once-parched earth springs back to life faster than your favorite pop band from the ’90s beginning in October, making it a lush playground for wildlife again.

Animals that were playing it cool by the waterholes begin to strut their stuff across the park, flaunting their post-dry season glow-up.

We’ve personally ventured into the wild heart of Kruger during both the tail-end of the chilly season in August and the blossoming beginnings of September. We gotta say that September wins hands-down—primarily because you won’t turn into an icicle during those early morning game drives.

Mornings are still cool but warm up quickly and require much fewer layers to strip off as the day progresses.

  • Babbling Brooks and Blooming Beauties: The rains transform the landscape into a living, breathing watercolor painting beginning in October.
  • Nighttime Spectacles – The balmy spring nights are perfect for night safaris, offering glimpses of the nocturnal life that hides away during the warm days.
  • Thunderous Applause: Experience the power and majesty of the African thunderstorms, a natural spectacle that lights up the skies and rejuvenates the land.
  • Discover More: Wondering if a Kruger safari is safer than your cousin’s homemade bungee jump ? Spoiler: it’s like comparing a fluffy pillow to a porcupine – Kruger wins, hands down.

Things To Consider When Deciding The Best Time For You To Go To Kruger National Park, South Africa

Before you pack your cameras and long lenses, let’s mull over a few extra nuggets of wisdom that could make or break your Kruger escapade.

When Is Rainy Season

Right, so you’re thinking about heading to Kruger National Park, and you’ve got your heart set on some rain-soaked adventure, huh?

Well, pack your rubber boots and a good sense of humor because from October to April, Kruger turns into an episode of “Singin’ in the Rain,” minus Gene Kelly (and with a lot more mosquitoes).

These months are famously known as the rainy season, soaking the landscape and turning the park into a lush, green paradise— a stark contrast to its usual khaki palette.

While the rest of us moan about summer showers, Kruger’s wildlife throws a full-on fiesta, with the area coming alive with newborn critters and the rivers and waterholes bustling with activity.

Just remember, while it’s an extraordinary time to witness the circle of life in all its wet and wild glory, your safari might occasionally get photobombed by raindrops the size of golf balls. And it will be harder to spot animals behind the abundant greenery.

Honestly, the idea of trekking through Kruger while it’s doing its best impression of a water park has never quite been our cup of tea—mainly because we’re all about those big, majestic game animals that look like they’ve just strutted off a safari fashion runway.

But if you’re the type who gets all starry-eyed over birds flipping through their latest hits, then the rainy season could seriously be your calling (get it?!).

When Can You Expect The Best Weather

Navigating the weather in Kruger National Park is like trying to predict the plot twists in your favorite soap opera, but we’ve got some insider info for you.

If you’re the Goldilocks of travelers – not too hot, not too cold, just right – aim for April, May, September, and October.

These months, straddling the comfy couch of fall and spring, hit that sweet spot where the sun doesn’t feel like a personal vendetta against your skin, and you don’t need to bundle up as if you’re exploring the Arctic during game drives.

Plus, these months are ideal for postcard-perfect safari shots with very few raindrops in sight.

When To Go To Avoid Risk Of Malaria

Wanting to visit Kruger but fretting over malaria ?

Well, lucky for you, the dry season from July through September is like a mini holiday from those pesky, malaria-carrying mosquitoes. They’re generally taking a break and less of a nuisance.

This doesn’t mean they’ve signed a peace treaty; it’s just their off-season. So, if you’re someone who likes to play it extra safe, like wearing a belt with suspenders, you might still consider popping those anti-malaria meds as a precaution.

On our inaugural trek to Kruger, we were those ultra-prepared tourists armed to the teeth with malaria meds, you know, just in case we accidentally signed up for a mosquito-tasting tour.

But, lo and behold, the first few days were a blur of excitement, and those pills might as well have been left in another hemisphere for all the attention we gave them.

Fortunately, it didn’t matter. We came back sporting maybe a couple of bites that could easily have been mistaken for passionate love pecks from the wilderness. Honestly, Kruger’s mosquito squad seemed more interested in the local cuisine than us.

Ultimately, whether to medicate or not is your call—kind of like choosing between decaf and regular coffee in the morning.

When Is High Tourist Season (And Best Time To Avoid It)

Venturing into the heart of Kruger National Park, you might think you’ll have the kingdom to yourself, but think again.

The truth is, Kruger doesn’t play favorites with its calendar; there’s no such thing as a “low season” for tourists.

Yet, come December, January, July, and August, it seems like everyone got the same memo, flocking in droves. Thanks to school holidays and the universal signal for “time to vacay” among international travelers, these months see a spike in foot traffic, making them what many would call “high season.”

Consider this time of year the park’s open invitation to join the annual great migration – of tourists, that is.

So if you’re the sort who likes dodging the crowds while still catching great weather, the shoulder seasons wrapping around those bustling July and August months could be your sweet spot.

Typically, May, June, September, and October serve up delicious slices of Kruger life where the sun still smiles warmly, but the tourist throng thins out, giving you more breathing room and maybe even a private audience with the Big Five if you’re lucky.

If You Want To Be Budget Conscious

If pinching pennies is your game and avoiding the high-season wallet squeeze sounds like a plan, then April, May, and October should be circled, underlined, and highlighted on your calendar.

These are the times when Kruger does a little hocus pocus and transforms from a bustling marketplace of tourists to a serene haven where not only do you save a buck or two, but you also get to enjoy the park without elbowing your way through crowds.

It’s a real win-win for those who love both their wildlife and their wallet.

  • Discover More: Think you’ve seen it all? Wait until you get a load of the “so-ugly-they’re-cute” squad – these faces could scare a mirror into breaking, but their mums adore them anyway.

FAQs For The Best Time To Go To Kruger National Park

Let’s tackle the wild jungle of FAQs about the best time to visit Kruger National Park, and trust us, it’s not your average safari briefing.

Which Month Is Best For Kruger National Park?

Grab your safari hat and khaki pants because August or September are hands down some of the best months to visit Kruger National Park. The weather is just perfect—not too hot, not too cold. Plus, the dry conditions make those majestic creatures much easier to spot as they saunter down for a sip at the watering holes.

Is October Good For Kruger?

Yes, October is good for Kruger, but expect slightly more rain to grace your safari adventure. It’s like nature’s way of saying, “Welcome to the waterpark!” minus the slides and the chlorine. You’ll still have plenty of sunshine for those dawn-to-dusk animal-spotting escapades, just with a bit more of a splash. Perfect for those who like their safaris with a side of possible thunderstorm drama.

Is August A Good Time To Go To Kruger National Park?

You betcha. August is the golden ticket to Kruger National Park, where the animal sightings are as plentiful as the jokes at a family reunion. It’s when the dry season hosts a wildlife parade, drawing the crowds to watering holes. That said, August is high season in the park so expect plenty of vehicles on animal sightings with you.

What Is The Best Time To Visit South Africa In General?

May to September stands out as the best time to visit South Africa, mirroring the prime wildlife-watching season of Kruger National Park. It’s when you can enjoy the sights without the brutal heat or torrential downpours, offering clear days ideal for snapping those breathtaking landscapes.

Is There A Bad Time To Visit South Africa?

January and February might just be the months to skip for a South African getaway unless you’re a fan of sweltering heat and humidity that’ll have you sweating faster than a tourist lost in Johannesburg without GPS. These months turn South Africa into a sauna session you didn’t sign up for, with conditions that can make outdoor adventures feel more like endurance tests. Pack the sunscreen, or better yet, plan for another time.

By city rail

The City Rail connects areas where there are no metro lines. Connects with the subway at the Moscow railway station. It has 2 lines: Sormovskaya and Priokskaya. The fare by train costs 28 rubles. According to the Citicard Transport Card, the fare is 26 rubles. Also by train you can get to the nearest suburb, or transfer to suburban trains to Dzerzhinsk, Bor, Semenov or Arzamas.

By bus and trolleybus

safari kruger game drive

As of May 2017 in each district of the city there are several city bus routes. The number of trolleybus routes is much less. In one district of the city there are 1-2 trolleybus routes. Trolleybus routes are completely absent in the Leninsky city district. It is worth noting that trolleybuses do not connect the Lower City to the Upper. This is because the trolleybuses do not have enough power to climb the mountain.

The trolleybus network is divided into 3 parts:

  • The upper trolleybus network (it unites all three districts - Nizhegorodsky, Sovetsky and Prioksky) with a turning circle on the Minin Square, near the Kremlin.
  • The lower trolleybus network (connects Kanavinsky, Moskovsky and Sormovsky districts)
  • The Avtozavod trolleybus network (connects all the distant sleeping microdistricts among themselves)

Throughout the city, land trams run. The longest route of all is 417. It connects the outskirts of Avtozavodsky district with the Moskovsky Rail Terminal. The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The route passes through the sleeping areas (approximately 75% of the way). Also in remote neighborhoods there are routes of several more trams, but in most cases, they are in the Upper City. By the way, you can reach there by tram 27 or 10 directly from the Moscow railway station.

By marshrutka

Marshrutkas do not stop at every stop. To indicate your intention to exit a marshrutka, press a button and to indicate your intention to enter a marshrutka en-route, you need to wave your hand.

Nizhny Novgorod has not very developed bicycle infrastructure. Special bike paths exist only on the Upper-Volga and Lower-Volga embankments and on Rozhdestvenskaya Street.

The upper city is very hilly and full of steep inclines and even many locals will get off their bicycles and push their bikes up the hill by foot. Drivers can be reckless and pose a danger to cyclists. The roads can also be icy during the winter. City cyclists solve this problem by replacing summer tires with winter tires.

Also, in 2017 the implementation of a new integrated transport scheme of the city began. It provides for a large number of bicycle paths in the Upper City (including on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street) and in the Lower City.
