Frequently asked questions

  • Flying can be a great experience if you’ve got all the right stuff. Firstly, you’ll need toiletry items, such as a toothbrush and some deodorant, a spare pair of socks and a good read. Next, make room in your hand luggage for your phone, tablet and chargers, any medications and maybe a quality neck pillow too. Lastly, remember to bring your passport, travel docs and your bank cards.
  • Make sure you don’t have sharp objects (like a knife or scissors) hiding in your hand luggage. Other banned items include explosive or flammable goods, such as aerosol cans and fuel, and gels and liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).
  • The answer to a comfortable flight is often as simple as your choice of clothes. Prepare for temperature changes by layering up. This will keep you nice and warm if the cabin gets too cold. Shoes like flip flops and heels are best left in your checked suitcase. Even though they may be your favorites, opt for flat, closed-toed footwear like sneakers. Your feet will appreciate it.
  • Unfortunately, a risk of flying long distances is developing DVT (deep vein thrombosis), a blood clot condition caused by extended periods of inactivity. To prevent this from happening, make the most of every opportunity to walk around and give your legs a stretch. Compression tights and socks are another simple way to help lower your risk.
  • Keep your passport and boarding pass close by. They’re the first things you’ll be asked to show at security.
  • Next up, both you and your carry-on bag must be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, take off anything that might set the alarms off. Items like your coat, belt and earphones need to go through the machine.
  • Your electronic devices like laptops and phones will also need to go on a tray for inspection. Don’t worry though, you’ll be back online in no time.
  • Don’t forget to remove liquids and gels from your carry-on bag. They often need to be sent through the X-ray separately. Each product should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and everything must fit in a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
  • Choosing your footwear wisely can save you a few precious minutes. Boots and bulky shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Lightweight sneakers usually aren’t.
  • Knives and other sharp items are not allowed on board. They’ll be confiscated at security, so put them in your checked bags.

Getting to and around the city of Amsterdam

The main airport that services the city is Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (MAS), located around 10 miles southwest of the city. The airport has a single-terminal with three departure halls. The city is easily reached from the airport, thanks to direct rail and bus routes. Taxis and car rental services are also available.

Train services: Dutch Railways operates trains from a station that is directly beneath Schiphol airport. Passengers are able to buy chipcards, either for single-use or as an OV-chipkaart, from the yellow machines at the station and on Schiphol Plaza. An alternative that is quicker than the usual domestic train routes is the Intercity Direct service, which is also available from Schiphol.

Buses: Line 197 (otherwise known as the Airport Express) will take you to Amsterdam city center from the airport and operates every fifteen minutes.

Shuttle: The airport also offers a hotel shuttle service from directly outside the terminal (stand A7) and it can take you to your Amsterdam hotel.

Once you’ve settled in to your hotel and are ready to explore the city, you’ll find that it’s easy to walk around Amsterdam in just a few hours. You need to keep an eye out though – cars have the right of way and bikes, trams and buses crisscross the city.

Amsterdam is a very bike-friendly city as well. Rent a bike to speed up your pace without turning the city into a blur. Bike lanes and bike racks are plentiful. Make sure the light on your bike is working; you can be fined for riding without a light after dark. To travel beyond the city, it’s easy to take the train or bus. If you’re traveling on from Amsterdam, the station beneath the airport has international train connections to the likes of Belgium and France. You can also take a taxi or rent a car, as the Netherlands highway system is very good.

The daffodils and tulips break through the winter weather, blanketing the city and surrounding fields, welcoming spring. Everyone – including locals – wants to be out and about. Make your arrangements for flight tickets and accommodations well in advance if you’re visiting at this time as large numbers of tourists’ flock to the city to view this colorful natural attraction. All in all, peak season runs from the start of tulip season to September (encompassing spring and summer) when the temperatures are at their best, with plenty of open-air dining on sidewalks and canal boats to enjoy. Consequently, accommodations are hard to come by and the city is very crowded, especially in July and August when the temperatures are at their peak. It pays to bear in mind the city’s weather can be temperamental and summer isn’t a guarantee of sunshine but it is more likely. Conditions in the summer range from clear and sunny, to warm rainy periods and days of high humidity. Beaches, outdoor cafés and parks are popular leisure destinations for both locals and tourists. Flights to Amsterdam and hotels book up fast during the peak season so it’s wise to plan ahead, and even then it may be hard to come across any cheap flights. You may also want to research any events that may be going in the city during these times as well, as they may impact flight and accommodation prices and availability. Many cultural events are scheduled from September through June, such as the Jordaan Festival (late September) and Museum Night (November), and Christmas is a popular time for tourists to take flights to Amsterdam to experience the festivity of the city. Expect banks, shops, and many museums to be closed during this period. Off season: October to March is considered off season for Amsterdam because it gets much colder and, therefore, less crowded. The weather can be quite unpredictable during this time but, the one constant is the rain. So if you’re flying to Amsterdam during this time make sure to pack plenty of rain gear. Cheap flights to Amsterdam are usually found during the winter months of December through February, when the weather is extremely cold. If you go during the cold months of November/December through March, there will be plenty to do and fewer people trying to do it. Plus, if one of the canals freezes during your trip, which they sometimes do, you can join the Amsterdam residents on skates – a lovely way to see the city. You may also get to enjoy some snowy weather during this time too.

How long is the flight to Amsterdam?

If you’re lucky enough to snag a nonstop flight, you can fly from Los Angeles to Amsterdam in about eleven hours. A one-stop flight may push that to fifteen hours or more. Chop about three hours off those times if you’re flying from New York or Washington, D.C.

Which airlines fly to Amsterdam?

What should you pack for a flight to Amsterdam?

Everyone walks or bicycles everywhere in Amsterdam, and they’re definitely not wearing wooden shoes when they do it, so make sure you bring comfy shoes. Because Amsterdam’s an older city, its streets can be confusing, so a good map is also a good idea. Dress appropriately in the summer when the temperatures are much warmer.

What are some things to do in Amsterdam?

Exploring Amsterdam from a bicycle makes you feel like you belong in this quaint yet cosmopolitan city. Take a ride through the charming Jordaan neighborhood to explore antique shops and art galleries, or catch a ferry to Amsterdam North for a hip scene along the banks of the IJ (which is either a river or a lake, depending on whom you talk to). You’ll also find intriguing specialty shops along De Negen Straatjes (The Nine Streets). Amsterdam is filled with fun street markets and flea markets in most neighborhoods, where you can find antiques, vintage albums, clothing and books. A special market is the Food Hallen in the Oud-West neighborhood, serving hipster street food to delight any taste buds. End your day of shopping and exploration by downing an artisan beer at Brouwerij‘t Ij, a microbrewery built right into one of the city’s famous windmills. Another unique way to see Amsterdam is from the water, since the city is built along a whole network of canals. Take a romantic canal cruise, or choose a hop-on, hop-off tour that lets you explore the city at your own pace. During spring, you don’t want to miss picking up some tulips at the Bloemenmarkt, a flower market that floats on a canal, or head out of the city to visit the tulip fields. Amsterdam is home to some noted museums, with the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum at the top of the list; the Van Gogh museum provides a remarkable experience as its 1,000+ paintings and letters walk you through the great yet tortured artist’s life. Many of the city’s museums cluster around Museumplein, an open-air square that hosts its own informal art exhibitions, while on the southern shore of the IJ, the EYE Film Institute hosts contemporary film exhibits. On a more somber note, Amsterdam is home to the Anne Frank House and Museum, where the famous diary writer hid with her family during World War II.

Some hotel accommodations are within the airport and the transportation options to get you into the city are well-setup, with taxis and hotel shuttles circling at all hours.

Amsterdam Weather

Spring is the perfect time to plan flights to Amsterdam, beautiful flowers cover the famous Dutch countryside, spread out among the windmills. Autumn is another popular time for Amsterdam flights; the temperature is comfortable for spending time outdoors and enjoying the changing colors. You’ll find that any time of year is sufficient for planning a trip with temperatures neither too hot in the summer nor too cold in the winter. It does snow in the winter, even though it usually only lasts a few days and hardly accumulates. You might want to pack a light sweater in the summer since there will be some chilly, cloudy days.

You can also hire a car if you prefer the convenience of driving on your own schedule. Amsterdam When to Go

Most of the city’s 3three million to 4 four million annual visitors come in the summer months between June and September. June sees the longest days, with the sun rising just after 5 a.m. and setting after 10 p.m. Evenings on the canals are particularly beautiful, with the bridges decorated with fairy lights and the sky a peacock blue. And while the streets are busy, they don’t throng with visitors as they do in peak months. The summer festival season kicks off in June with the Holland Festival of classical and contemporary music and a string of cultural events in Vondelpark, the city’s largest green space.

July and August are Amsterdam’s busiest months, with the longest queues at museums and galleries. These are the sunniest months as well, though temperatures rarely climb out of the seventies and drop into the low fifties in the evenings. During the Grachtenfestival canal festival in mid-August, waterside concerts pop up at some 100 makeshift venues throughout the city.

Autumns are cool and damp, with overcast skies and frequent rain showers. Winters run from November through March and, though generally quite mild, bring sporadic flurries of snow. The mercury rarely drops below 30. During these months, Amsterdam is almost empty of visitors, except for the annual High Times Cannabis Cup in November and for Oudejaarsavond (New Year's Eve), when the city holds one of northern Europe’s bawdiest parties.

Spring is a great time to visit Amsterdam. Between late March and May, Holland’s famous tulips are in bloom, most spectacularly in the vast Keukenhof gardensGardens, where beds are a riot of brilliant reds, blues, and pinks. And in April, the city hosts its biggest annual festival, Koninginnedag (Queen's Day).

Loyal Delta traveler, but last nights flight was a train wreck. Seated in 1B after multiple delays. Then we couldn’t takeoff because of an issue with the passenger that was ‘not in compliance’ and had to deplane along with the threat if they did not deplane, all the passengers would be required to do so. Finally they were escorted off, but the experience threw off the crew. Disruptive for everyone. Service was a mess, televisions didn’t work, bathroom door kept swinging open during the entire flight whenever empty …

Older plane and it came with Fleas and flea bites!

Flight was canceled so it was not a great experience. Boarded, then deboarded. Delayed, boarded a new plane then deboarded the 2nd plane and flight was canceled. Then booked a fight to Rome and took a train to Venice the next day. Lost an entire day +

All good on Delta's part. Passengers could be a little more courteous to each other.

The fight was about 2 1/2 hours delayed, but that was weather related. The flight was also overbooked. But we were in Comfort plus so the flight was fine for us.

Awful. Flight was continuously getting delayed and gates kept changing without any reason. Flight was delayed for more then 3 hours

The plane was FREEZING SEATS UNCOMFORTABLE Otherwise smooth Thank you

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Seat back monitors and outlets were dead and not working.

The crew, food, and entertainment were all good. But my screen had some sort of bug where if I turned it off, it would turn back on after 2-5 minutes. At full brightness. It made it very hard to get any shut-eye on the overnight flight. Also, the older Boeing plane, while nicely cared for (and no doors fell off 😅👏) doesn't have the nice air quality of newer planes. So I felt a bit greasy by the time we landed in Sweden.

KLM is my favourite airline. Never ever let us down.Staff are first class.

The plane. Airbus A330-200. Comfortable for a 7-hour flight. Seats seemed to have more legroom. I was in row 17. Flight was operated by Delta but was better than expected.

It was operated by Delta. Boarding took a long time. How difficult can it be? Overall decent trip. Liked the Salt Lake City airport. Better option than Chicago for transfers.

Pretty bad. Food was awful. drinks were scarce, as if drinking an extra drink would ruin the airline. attendants were not very helpful. likely Dutch "directedness" (I cannot be bothered). Crammed flight. Entertainment in very minimal dosage. Almost all old movies and series with 1-3 episodes only. Very limited number of options available. Jesus!! it seems you need to bring your own entertainment these days even of flights that are 13 hrs long!! I would and I will avoid in the future!

Quick and efficient as always. Air France managed to loose and damage my luggage that never made it onto my KLM flight.

The food from Lagos to Amsterdam was was very poor compared to AMS-YYZ

The flight was again delayed for more then 2 hours with some lousy explanation regarding the reason of the delay. Although the flight was delayed for more than 2 hours, no refreshments were offered (according to EU regulations). Last 4 flights on KLM - always at least 2 hrs late. So be prepared that you cannot plan anything with KLM.

Booked connecting flights with KlM. My serving flight was the furthest part of the airport. On arrival in Zurich. My two cases arrived but only one carry on belong to my son. His three suitcase didn't arrive. After enquiring we discovered they were still in Amsterdam. We landed at 11.12. We eventually left the airport just after one.

Seats are fair enough for medium tall people. Good food all the trip. Fight attendances are warm

I thought KLM was the best airline but the Lima - Amsterdam was 1 hours late, the Brussels - Amsterdam was 2.30 hours late and the Amsterdam - Lima was 30 minutes late

Traveling with JetBlue from NYC was convenient as accessing JFK airport was straightforward via the LIRR to the AirTrain. Maneuvering through the terminal was hassle-free, which was a pleasant start to the journey. However, the flight experience itself left much to be desired. The seating arrangement was notably uncomfortable; despite securing a window seat, space felt cramped. This was exacerbated by the middle seat passenger encroaching on my area, which made the flight less enjoyable. Additionally, while the in-flight entertainment system initially seemed like a reprieve, the sound outlet on my seat was inoperable. This issue turned what could have been a manageable three-hour flight into a rather tedious ordeal, as I was unable to use the entertainment system effectively. While JetBlue provided a smooth process in terms of airport logistics, the on-board experience highlighted areas in need of improvement, particularly in terms of comfort and entertainment system maintenance.

Over 2 hour delay for a 50-minute flight is unacceptable, especially in normal weather. Very poor communication via app

Kayak sent over to jet blue my account being Mike Callaghan instead of Michael. I have a jet blue account with Michael that was connected

The flight was excellent. The crew was welcoming and attentive.

Going through JFK’s security is a mess. The TSA security said no shoes on the bins. So, we place our shoes in the belt and they came out all over the belt. Boarding was delayed and Flight as well.

There were multiple delays but JetBlue tried to make the boarding and departure process as quick and efficient as possible. The crew was as detached from reality as could be, meaning: not very friendly and just doing things by the numbers.

Jetblue needs to improve on Onboarding as it seems to always be behind on departing. It never leaves on time. I would recommend to have an earlier Onboarding in order to leave on time and respect your customers time as well.

40 minute delay before take off after boarding flight. Bright lights throughout night flight due Issues with light panels. In flight Entertainment nonfunctional

I booked this flight using JetBlue points and I was just so happy. The plane was so clean, I had every need met. Thank you!!

Another horrible Jet Blue experience. This airline has suffered the biggest decline of all from best to worst. TVs didn’t work (again). internet was temperamental. Boarded late and couldn’t get organized to serve snacks.

Amenity kits were never handed out. There was zero friendliness and assistance by crew. Food was uneatable. One drink was offered and no wine, with dinner or before or after. Cocktails and beverages were not encouraged and when I asked for water, none was given. Poorest, most cramped business class flight I’ve ever been on.

Loved it! Best airline to fly with. Nice crew, good planes, good food!

Probably my favorite airline and way to go to Europe. Everything went smoothly! Food was tasty, crew was pleasant. Really cannot complain!

Horrible. Garbage airline. Due to the strike we got a replacement plane/crew. I didn't get my exit row seat I paid for. Food was horrible. Plane was hot and didn't have AC vents.

The first leg of my 2 flights were delayed, causing me to miss my second flight and have to stay the whole night in Dublin. Super upset with this experience, and I still need to figure out how to get compensated for this.

Everything went well, but could have used a bit more legroom.

The flight got us safely from point a to point b and on time. For a transatlantic flight that isnt nothing. Flight crew was kind and professional. The seats are super uncomfortable (worse than domestic budget airlines) and the cabin was DIRTY.

Long unexplained delay, uncomfortable back row, long waits for trash collection.

Great service on the plane and by ground staff. great prices. I was able to change seats on the plane. The allocated seats cannot be changed when checkin in online. They have to be done at the airport if you check in at the airport or on the plane by asking a stewardess / steward.

I fly to the USA every 6wks on Ave and 99% of the time I fly Aer Lingus. If I fly BA I’m always disappointed. My only criticism is the food. I’m vegan and over the last year it’s got slightly better these last couple of flights but on the whole it’s not good! Salad and fruit salad for breakfast and that’s also the starter and desert for the lunch/dinner and the main is usually rice with fried veg 😳the pasta is pretty good though. That’s been the last 2 meals…. Everything else is fantastic.

have screens on backs of chairs...offer free snacks and water

Boarding and crew was great. Flight was cold, need layers. Deplaning was hard. We had to take stairs off the plane and I was separated from my travel companion because we were not seated together and they would not let him wait for me to get off so we were forced onto different shuttles.

Check in and boarding was easy, crew was cheerful. Not much to read or do on the plane and our neighboring passengers were talking loudly so we could not sleep. But overall good. Great coffee.

Flyplay is the only way I travel to Europe. Had a 15 hr layover in Iceland. Normally this would suck, but I regret a car and saw the black sand beaches, several waterfalls and sky lagoon. And finished with lamb at cafe Loki.

did not get the seats we had specially paid for

This is a no frills airline. You cant expect much for the price. Low cost flight, clean, nice staff. That's all I need for the price. If you want more, book with another airline and pay more. For Europe trips, PLAY is the ONLY airline I use

Misleading instructions for check in. Although I did virtual check in and was instructed to head to security, once I was at security, they told me to go back to Play ticket counter and get paper tickets. Also, beware that Play doesn’t participate in TSA PreCheck. I didn’t know that, despite entering PreCheck info when I purchased the tickets. I wasted time in the TSA PreCheck line as well. So we had two setbacks at check in.

It's a budget airline, so forewarned is forearmed. Yes, you pay for everything like carry-on, checked baggage, seat selection, but that's becoming the case with major airlines. Bringing your own snacks and entertainment on board is highly recommended. It's no frills, but the crew, the plane and the flight itself was great. If you want pampering go for a larger airline. If you just want to get from A to B in comfort and safety, Play is a great choice.

It is a low cost airline. Staff are courteous. There is no entertainment. Food is purchased.

Upon boarding, the people at the gate were extremely rude, there were no outlets on a 6 hour international flight, there was no entertainment, all food and drink was purchase only (even snacks), and my seat reclining function was fully broken. The only redeeming quality was the flight attendants were extremely nice. This was by far the worst flight I have ever been on in my entire life

Deal alert: Fly to Amsterdam and Brussels from Boston, Miami and New York City from $318 round-trip

S ummer is quickly coming to an end, so it's a good time to plan ahead for the next adventure. Right now, we're seeing good prices on flights to Belgium and the Netherlands from several U.S. departure cities. If you live in Boston, Chicago, Miami or Newark, you can book a trip to Amsterdam or Brussels on Scandinavian Airlines for as low as $328 round-trip.

The travel window for this sale is from November through next spring, meaning you can enjoy Amsterdam's famous Christmas markets or visit the eye-catching Grand Place in Brussels at a discount.

The lowest-priced tickets we saw had to be booked through an online travel agency , and the fares are for economy-tier tickets. A carry-on bag is included, but be aware that checked luggage will cost you between $75 and $110 each way.

Check prices for premium economy, too, as SAS is also offering deals for that cabin.

Routes : From Boston, Chicago, Miami, Newark, New York City and Washington, D.C., to Amsterdam and Brussels

Sample flights

SAS has flights from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Brussels Airport (BRU) in December for only $318 round-trip. That includes an extended layover in Stockholm on the return leg.

If you live in the tri-state area, SAS has flights from New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to BRU available for $339 round-trip.

According to Google Flights , this is a big discount from the typical cost for this route.

There are some decent prices for Miami-to-Amsterdam itineraries, too. You can fly from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) in January for $375 round-trip. There is good availability at this price for this route in early 2025.

Here's one last Amsterdam bargain. You can snag a ticket from JFK to AMS in November for $375 round-trip.

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® : 3 points per dollar spent on travel

Bottom line

Some of the routes in this deal have long layovers on the return flight. Consider making the most of your time in, say, Copenhagen or Stockholm by leaving the airport and exploring the city instead of lounging in the terminal or a lounge — Copenhagen Airport (CPH) is less than a 15-minute train ride from the city center. You could spend some quality time enjoying a meal and some of the sites in the Danish capital during your stopover.
