Safari Surfig Intolerably Slow w/ Private Relay

Has anyone else experienced EXTEME slowdowns using Private Relay with Safari? When it's on, I can barely load a simple site like Google or CBC News — the progress bar hangs, and the images are extremely slow to load. I turned it off, and Safari is fine. My connection speeds are around 500Mbps, so no problem there. It almost feels like somewhere in the relay, the stream is being throttled.

Not sure when this began, but it may have been after the last Safari (not Monterey) update, installed a few days ago.

I'm on a late 2020 iMac running Monterey 12.2.1 and Safari 15.3 (17612.4.9.1.8)

Go step by step and test.

1. Quit Safari, launch Safari holding the Shift key down.

It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility.

And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and

the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed.

3. Clear History

New Safari bug lets websites 'de-anonymize' visitors

Apple 's catchphrase for Safari, the Cupertino-based tech giant's default browser, is "Blazing Fast. Incredibly Private." We can't contest the former, but the latter is questionable due to a new privacy-infiltrating bug spotted in macOS , iOS and iPadOS .

FingerprintJS , a tech startup that builds open-source fingerprinting APIs for preventing online fraud, recently published a blog post revealing that Safari 15 has a vulnerability that enables websites to track users' internet activity and unveil their identity.

Safari 15 bug leaks users' online digital trail

The culprit behind Safari's vulnerability is its Javascript API called IndexedDB, an in-browser database that stores users' data to support a web page or app. 

Ideally, websites should only "see" the names of databases for its own domain — not others. Unfortunately, this isn't the case with Safari 15; websites can use this exploit to track other webpages its visitors are exploring.

Let's use Google as an example since it keep tabs of account holders by storing an IndexedDB of each user. Let's say you're watching videos on YouTube . If you launch a new website that uses IndexedDB, it will be able to detect that you're visiting the video-sharing website. 

"The fact that database names leak across different origins is an obvious privacy violation. It lets arbitrary websites learn what websites the user visits in different tabs or windows ," FingerprintJS said.

Adding salt to our wounds, FingerprintJS added that if you're logged into your Google account , websites can also see your unique Google user ID and photo (if you've uploaded one for your account). A malicious actor can retrieve your avatar and use an image search engine to unveil your identity.

FingerprintJS reported the issue to Apple in late November. Apple engineers worked on the security vulnerability on Jan. 16 and marked FingerprintJS' bug report as resolved. However, a fix hasn't been released yet and the flaw "continues to persist for end users," the blog post said.

To see the vulnerability in action for yourself, you can run a proof-of-concept live demo . As mentioned, the vulnerability affects Safari 15 on macOS, iOS and iPadOS 15.

Safari iOS 14 Guide: Privacy Report, Built-In Translation, Compromised Password Alerts and More

Apple introduces improvements for almost all of the built-in apps with each new iteration of iOS, and iOS 14 is no exception. For Safari, Apple has added some useful new features like built-in translation and a Privacy Report that provides a rundown on all of the trackers that Safari is blocking.

Speed and Performance Improvements

According to Apple, Safari in iOS 14 features a "blazing-fast JavaScript engine" that makes Safari up to 2x faster than Chrome on Android.

Built-In Translation

Safari in iOS 14 has a built-in translation option that can be used to translate websites to English, Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Russian, or Brazilian Portuguese, which goes along with the new Translate app that Apple added in the update.

Additional languages to translate to can be added in the Settings app of the ‌iPhone‌, as outlined in the how to below.

Password Monitoring and Compromised Password Alerts

Safari in iOS 14 is able to monitor saved passwords, watching for passwords that have been involved in a data breach.

You can see potential problems under the "Security Recommendations" heading in the Passwords section of the Settings app.

Privacy Report

Safari in iOS 14 (and macOS Big Sur) adds a Privacy Report feature that expands on Apple's Intelligent Tracking Prevention functionality. For the last several years, Apple has been working to prevent cross-site tracking, a feature that websites use to track your internet usage as you browse different sites for ad targeting, analytics, and more.

Any website that uses ads for monetization or an ad network for that same purpose will have these trackers on it, as will any site that uses analytics services like Google Analytics for collecting data on user behavior for site and content improvements.

Safari on ‌iPhone‌ and ‌iPad‌ lists the number of trackers on each site that you visit, the number of trackers Safari has prevented, the number of websites you've visited that have trackers, and a list of the most frequently seen trackers such as Google's DoubleClick.net.

You can get to the Privacy Report section in Safari by tapping on the icon that's two As next to each other and choosing the "Privacy Report" option. Note that you must have cross-site tracking prevention enabled for Privacy Report to work, and Privacy Report will prompt you to enable the feature if it's not turned on already.

In Safari on ‌iPhone‌, if you're watching a video, you can now tap the Picture in Picture button to watch it in windowed mode, so you can continue browsing another website or doing something else on your ‌iPhone‌ while the video plays. Launching Websites From Search

If you type a URL like MacRumors.com in the pull down search interface on the ‌iPhone‌, you can hit the "Go" button to open the website directly without having to tap a link in the search results.

Simpler Sign in with Apple

Apple made new tools for developers to allow them to translate existing web accounts to Sign in with Apple, which will hopefully make new options available to ‌iPhone‌, ‌iPad‌, and Mac users who want to convert existing logins to Sign in with Apple, which is more secure.

Tracking Permission

Apps that want to track you across apps and websites to deliver personalized ads will now need to secure user permission to do so. Allow Tracking or Ask App Not to Track are two settings designed for apps, but the feature goes hand in hand with Privacy Report to keep apps from monitoring your app usage and website browsing habits.

iPadOS 14 - Scribble Support

Turn Private Browsing on or off on your iPhone

With Private Browsing, Safari won't remember the pages you visit, your search history, or your AutoFill information. Private Browsing also blocks known trackers, removes tracking used to identify individual users from URLs, and adds protections against advanced fingerprinting techniques.

How to turn on Private Browsing

While Private Browsing is on, the Safari address bar appears black or dark instead of white or gray.

Open Safari on your iPhone.

Swipe to the Private tab group button, then tap the tab that you want to open.

For additional privacy, you can choose to lock Private Browsing when you're not using it. When you lock your device, your private tabs in Safari will also lock. Then, when you unlock your device again, just unlock Private Browsing with Touch ID, Face ID, or your device passcode.

How To Better Protect Your Privacy In Safari

Apple's Safari web browser is one of the most popular options available and ships as the default browser on Macs, iPhones, and iPads. In keeping with Apple's stated belief that privacy is a fundamental human right, Safari does a good job of protecting user privacy out-of-the-box.

Safari features many of the basic protections users have come to expect from a modern web browser, including warning you when you visit a fraudulent site and preventing cross-site trackers from keeping tabs on you. Safari can also hide your IP address from known trackers, eliminating one of the most common methods advertisers use to collect information and build a profile around your activity.

In addition to the default options, there are additional steps you can take to protect your privacy in Safari even more. While there certainly are extreme measures you can take, such as blocking all cookies, the methods outlined in this article are designed to have a minimal impact on your day-to-day browsing and maintain as much functionality as possible.

Turn On Private Relay

Apple introduced a beta of Private Relay in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey (via Apple ). The idea behind Private Relay is to encrypt your internet traffic so that no one, including Apple, can see what websites you visit.

Again, this feature is still in beta as of the time of writing, so it may not always work correctly, or it may cause significant performance issues. If you decide to try it, however, it can provide a much greater degree of control over your privacy settings.

On the Mac, press the Command and Spacebar keys and type "System Preferences." In System Preferences, select "Apple ID" in the upper right corner, then check the box for "Private Relay." Once it's activated, click the "Options" button. Private Relay hides your IP address, but it gives you the option of allowing websites to know your general location or region — useful for weather, shopping, travel, and more.

If you would prefer that websites not even be able to see that much, change the option to "Use country and time zone." This will ensure you get some useful location-based information, but without websites knowing your general location or area.

On iOS/iPadOS, tap "Settings," select your name at the top of the screen, and choose "iCloud." Select "Private Relay (Beta)," and toggle the feature on. To change the location setting, select "IP address Location."

Install Third-Party Privacy Extensions

Another way to significantly improve the privacy Safari offers is to install third-party privacy extensions. Two such extensions for the Mac are DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials and AdGuard for Safari, both of which are free. DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials are not available on iOS, but AdGuard is.

To install the extensions on the Mac, press the Command and Spacebar key, and type in "App Store." Once the App Store is open, use the search field in the upper left corner to search for "DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials" or "AdGuard for Safari." Click the "Install" button to install the extension.

Once the extensions are installed, switch to Safari, click the Safari menu in the upper left and select "Preferences." Go to the "Extensions" tab and click the box next to each of the extensions you just installed.

It's worth noting there will be multiple extensions listed for both AdGuard and DuckDuckGo — eight and two, respectively. Apple limits how many filters an extension can include. As a result, since AdGuard has tens of thousands of such filters, the only way to include them all is to have multiple extensions (via AdGuard's Andrey Meshkov ).

It's also worth noting that activating AdGuard and DuckDuckGo will display a warning that the extensions can read and alter every webpage you visit, as well as see your browsing history. This is completely normal, and doesn't mean the extensions are spying on you. Both extensions help block trackers and ads, and protect your privacy. In order to do that, they need to be able to see the contents of the website you're visiting and alter or block elements accordingly.

To use AdGuard with iOS/iPadOS, open the App Store, search for "AdGuard," and click the "Install" button. Open the "Settings" app, scroll down and choose Safari. Select Extensions and activate all of the AdGuard extensions.

Use Private Browsing Mode

In situations that require even more privacy, such as those times you want to leave no trace of your browsing activity, Safari's Private Browsing mode provides additional protection.

According to Apple , when using Private Browsing your history isn't saved, cookies aren't stored, and the websites you visit are not shared across other devices logged in to your iCloud account. Private Browsing will also not save any Autofill information.

To activate Private Browsing on your Mac, go to the "File" menu and select "New Private Window."

On iOS, tap the Tabs button and select the "Tabs" popup menu at the bottom of the screen. Choose "Private" to open a new Private Browsing window.

On iPadOS, touch and hold the Tabs button, and then select "New Private Tab."

Safari already goes a long way towards protecting your privacy online. Using any, or all, of the above methods will protect your privacy even more, and make it much more difficult for websites and advertisers to track you.

Safari generally provides the fastest and most efficient browsing experience for Mac users. Apple puts a lot of work into optimizing the browser's performance and energy consumption specifically for Apple hardware.

Unfortunately, this doesn't always hold up over time. Safari can become slow, bloated, and unresponsive like any other browser. Let's take a look at how to speed up Safari on your Mac in case this happens to you.

1. Update and Restart Your Mac

Restarting your computer fixes many of life's problems, including a slow browser. It should always be your first troubleshooting step for such issues. Open the Apple menu and select Restart to do so.

Once your Mac boots up, it's also worth installing any outstanding app updates , which you can find by going to App Store > Updates .

2. Close Unneeded Tabs

How many tabs do you have open right now? And how many of those tabs do you really need? Safari keeps many of your tabs active in the background, even if you're not using them. One of the easiest ways to speed up Safari on your Mac is by simply closing tabs.

If you're particularly protective of your browser session, try an extension like Tab Suspender . This allows you to suspend your open tabs to save processing power.

3. Clear the Cache and Temporary Files

Like almost all browsers, Safari keeps a cache of data from all the websites you visit. This takes up disk space, which can contribute to performance problems. It's always a good idea to blow away Safari's cobwebs once in a while by emptying the cache, particularly if you need to improve the browser's performance.

To clear your Safari cache:

• Launch Safari and click Safari > Preferences in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
• Click on the Advanced tab, then check Show Develop menu in menu bar at the bottom of the window.
• Close the Preferences window and click Develop > Empty Caches in the menu bar at the top of the screen.

4. Disable Thirsty Extensions

Safari has some excellent extensions available to install, but sometimes they do more harm than good by slowing everything down. This is particularly true for extensions that directly affect the browsing experience. A good example is TamperMonkey ($1.99), which changes how websites appear and behave with user scripts.

To isolate extension-related slowdown, try disabling all your extensions under Safari > Preferences > Extensions . To disable an extension, uncheck the box next to its name.

You can then try re-enabling extensions one by one to find the culprit.

Disabling extensions in this manner doesn't remove them. You'll need to click the Uninstall button in each entry on the Extensions tab to completely remove Safari extensions .

5. Restrict Plug-Ins and Website Access

Apple has been working to eliminate plug-ins from Safari, but they might still cause your browser to slow down on rare occasions. This is most likely if you're running an older version of Safari.

It's best to ensure plug-ins ask you before Safari starts running them. The same goes for allowing access to your Mac's camera, microphone, screen sharing, and other security settings.

Go to Safari > Preferences > Websites to see which websites have requested access to your Mac. Work through each item in the sidebar and disable access for any websites that don't need it. We particularly recommend disabling auto-play.

In older versions of Safari, you should also go to Safari > Preferences > Security > Plug-In Settings . Make sure plug-ins are set to Ask before they start running. Disable any you don't need by unchecking them. These settings aren't available in newer versions of Safari.

6. Upgrade macOS

Yearly macOS upgrades include new versions of Safari. If you don't install the latest version of macOS, you won't have the latest version of Safari. New versions of Safari mean better compatibility with the latest web technologies.

7. Identify Dodgy Websites and Crashed Tabs
