Lonely Planet's guide to Athens

Here are things a traveler should know on their first trip to one of the world's most storied cities, Athens

Founded in 508 BCE, Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world and it's regularly touted as one of the Mediterranean’s best capital cities to visit. From the iconic Parthenon and the unique street art rivaling that of Berlin  to the city's glittering coastline, there’s so much to see and do in this ancient capital.

One thing’s for sure: whether you’re into architecture, mythology, ancient sites, modern art or simply relaxing by the beach, Athens has something for everyone.

When should I go to Athens?

Greece generally attracts most people during the summer months (June to August) and Athens is no different, but we recommend visiting in the spring and autumn to avoid the heat. These shoulder seasons – March to May and September to October – offer cooler temperatures and a more comfortable travel experience overall. It’s also worth remembering that Athens is a humid place thanks to its coastline, which creates humid heat in the summer and gives the winter cold an extra chill. Consider this when packing and bring layers for all seasons.

Greek Orthodox Easter usually falls in April or May and the run-up to it, plus the event itself, is a huge celebration in the Greek calendar – even more so than Christmas. Expect street carnivals to mark the end of Lent and street processions to the various neighborhood churches on the Easter weekend, culminating in Mass and a huge meal on the Easter Sunday with a lamb on the spit.

Restaurant prices won’t change much throughout the year, but accommodation prices do vary.  The same four-star hotel located near the Acropolis could be €140 per night in March and jump up to €320 in June for a weekend date, with Easter time seeing similar price rises.  It’s often cheaper to book directly, and hotels generally only publish their prices about two to three months in advance.

How much time should I spend in Athens?

Many Europeans come to Athens for a weekend break, and long-haul travelers often use the city as as a stopover on the way to the Greek islands.

You can get an initial taste of the city in two days, but we recommend a longer stay to truly understand the essence of this ancient capital. With four days, you can spend a day and a half at the capital’s famous sights, spend an afternoon wandering its neighborhoods , and still have time time to explore the beaches and ancient ruins of the Athenian coastline for a day or two.

Is it easy to get in and around Athens?

Located at the crossroads between Europe and the Middle East, Greece (and Athens in particular) attracts many tourists, which means the travel infrastructure is well developed and easy to use. Athens International Airport is 33km (21 miles) and a 30- to 45-minute drive – or a 45-minute metro ride – from the city center. There are also good ferry connections to Greece from Italy, with coach or rail services to and from Athens.

Island hoppers will set out from the port of Piraeus , which is 45km (28 miles) from the airport and 10km (6 miles) from the city center. Piraeus is well linked to both the center (20 minutes by metro) and airport (a 24-hour bus service that takes about 90 minutes).

Public transport around Athens itself is easy, accessible and affordable, with a single ticket valid for a 90-minute journey and costing a mere €1.20. There is also a range of ticket deals, including  tourist passes lasting three and five days.

The four modes of transport in Athens are:

  • the very clean metro system . Note: no food is allowed.
  • the overground train that connects the center to Piraeus port and other mainland destinations.
  • an extensive network of  buses and electric trolleys . These primarily run to urban neighborhoods beyond the touristic center.
  • a tram service that connects the city center to the Athens coast and its beaches in about an hour.

After you’ve gotten yourself from the airport to the city center, most of Athens’s popular sights sit within a compact, walkable area. Just be aware of the traffic – cars don’t always immediately stop at red lights, and motorbikes occasionally mount the sidewalk to park.

Top things to do in Athens

Naturally, many visitors head straight to the Acropolis and the  Parthenon , Athens' most notable sights. The Acropolis has a daily visitor’s cap to avoid overcrowding and to preserve the ancient monument, so be sure to book your tickets in advance. It’s not really necessary to have a guide for the Acropolis – which can be booked on site – unless you’re very interested in dates and knowing the intricacies of ancient Greek history.

At the foot of the Acropolis lies the impressive Acropolis Museum , which showcases treasures from the Archaic to Roman periods, plus a stunning glass floor that reveals the excavated ruins underneath it. There’s also a terraced restaurant on the top floor with gorgeous views across to the monument.

Ancient artifacts crop up all over the city in random places, too; the metro stations of Monastiraki, Akropoli and Syntagma are like mini museums in their own right, and there's even ruins of a Roman tomb in a glassed-off area of the Zara clothing store on the shopping street of Ermou.

If it’s shopping you’re into, pedestrianized Ermou St is the place to go. It runs for nearly a mile from the Acropolis area up to Parliament in Syntagma Square, and features tons of fashion brands such as Mac, Desigual and the aforementioned Zara, plus a huge H&M. Greece’s main department store, Attica, is also here, and it's a great place to stock up with your holiday essentials.

Looking for free and low-cost things to do in Athens ? Meander along the streets of Monastiraki flea market on a Sunday to peruse all the random wares for sale (everything from old drachma coins to shop mannequins), or take a stroll through the National Garden  next to the Parliament building, with its many species of plants and parrots flying freely. Witness the changing of the evzones (presidential guards) on the hour outside the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier , or make your way to  Filopappou Hill /Hill of the Muses with its pine forest – a great destination on a hot day thanks to its abundant shade. Be sure to head up here at sunset for views across to the Saronic Gulf.

My favorite thing to do in Athens

As an aficionado of street art, I love exploring the burgeoning street art scene here and getting to know the various neighborhoods where it proliferates. Take in the famous Praying Hands Mural just off Omonia Sq, for example, which depicts Jesus praying for the people down on Earth – a play on Albrecht Dürer’s Praying Hands (1508).

I also love wandering around the hidden village of Anafiotika , which sits beneath the northeast side of the Acropolis. A sub-district of Plaka, it was built in the mid-1800s when King Otto brought in workers from the Greek island of Anafi to construct his palace. Homesick, the workers set about making their neighborhood a replica of their homeland, building white, sugar-cubed houses with flat stone roofs and brightly painted wooden doors and shutters, like those found in the Cyclades. Pink and white bougainvilleas wind their way up these buildings, several of which have roof gardens.

Anafiotika is a bit difficult to find, but worth the effort. Start at the Acropolis main entrance, and walk to your left along the path; keep the monument to your right until you reach the Church of Metamorphosis. Continue straight past the church and follow the wider path up a steep hill. The path turns right and runs into stairs – this is the start of the island village.

How much money do I need for Athens?

Athens isn’t an expensive place to visit compared to other European destinations, especially outside of the high summer season when prices rise significantly.

  • Hostel dorm room: approx. €26 per night
  • Basic room for two: €36–128, depending of style of hotel and location
  • Self-catering apartment: €65 per day
  • Public transport ticket: €1.20 for a 90-minute journey, €10 from the airport, €4.10 for a day pass, €20 for a three-day pass including one airport journey, €8.10 for a five-day pass (not including airport)
  • Coffee: €2–2.50
  • Typical Greek gyros with salad and fries: €2–3
  • Dinner for two: €30 (add €2.50 for beer or wine)
  • Beer at a pub: €2.50+

What do I need to know before going to Athens?

Bring layers, no matter the season

As Athens is located on the coast, it’s sticky in the summer and quite chilly in the spring, fall and winter evenings. Layers are always a good idea: think T-shirts, light sweaters and a jacket for the cooler months. For the really hot summer months, bring a sports cooling towel to wrap around your neck to cool off as you explore.

Be aware of your belongings on the metro

As with any capital or big city, pickpockets can take advantage of large tourist crowds, especially on crowded public transport. Avoid hanging large cameras around your neck and keep your backpack in front of you. You may also want to invest in a hanging cord for your cell phone to loop across your body so it can’t be snatched from your hands.

No flushing toilet paper!

The plumbing in Athens is antiquated and the pipes tend to be very narrow. Flushing paper down the toilet will clog things up, so you’ll always find a bin with bag inside it in the bathroom for you to place toilet paper inside. This is removed daily by housekeeping.

After speaking with quite a few travelers on the subject, Athens is often a jumping off city for more explorations. That means you may only have a day or two there before heading to the Greek islands, the Peloponnese, or elsewhere. On my most recent trip, I only had a day in Athens, and I’m going to share exactly how to make the most of it!

Overview Of One Day In Athens Itinerary

Start your day in Plaka, the oldest and most picturesque neighborhood of Athens. Explore its charming alleyways and admire the neoclassical buildings. Grab a coffee or a light breakfast from nearby cafes before heading to meet your tour guide or go directly to the Acropolis. At the Acropolis, you will visit the sacred Parthenon, the Propylaea, and other monuments.

After exploring the Acropolis, have lunch in one of the charming restaurants or tavernas in Plaka. Indulge in some classic Greek dishes like moussaka and tzatziki before taking a leisurely stroll to Monastiraki, a lively district of Athens near the Acropolis. Here you can shop for souvenirs at the bazaar and soak in the atmosphere of this vibrant district.

Spend your afternoon shopping and exploring more neighborhoods, or visit some of the most famous sights in Athens such as the Parliament Building, Syntagma Square, and the National Archaeological Museum.

After a day of sightseeing, head to Thission for dinner and drinks. This is one of the oldest and most popular neighborhoods in Athens where you can enjoy traditional Greek food, get lost in its charming cobbled streets, and experience authentic Athenian nightlife.

End your evening with a visit to one of the many rooftop bars for a magnificent view of the night lit Acropolis.

🚌 General transportation around Athens

Athens is a pretty easy city to get around if you know what’s available! A good way to get around is by using the Athens metro, which takes you almost anywhere in Athens.

Taxis and buses are also available, but make sure to have coins or small bills on hand as they don’t accept credit cards. If you need to use a credit card, Uber was a good option at the time of my last visit.

🛩 From the Athens International Airport

When coming from the airport, there are clearly marked signs to the official airport taxi line. Again, for this option, you will need cash. Also, as taxi drivers have to wait in line for quite a while to pick up a fare, be prepared for grumbling if you’re not going to the city centre or very far from the airport.

You can also take the metro from the airport, but this takes much longer than getting a taxi.

Sometimes it can be a good idea to rent a car, although parking in the city centre can be difficult. Personally, I like to rent a car when leaving the city for the Peloponnese and to see the nearby archaeological sites, but I’m not a fan of driving in town. 😬🚗😂

Walking is also a great option once you’re in the city centre, as most attractions are within walking distance.

🍳 Start your Athens in a day itinerary with a hearty Athenian breakfast

Begin early and grab a traditional Athenian breakfast of bougatsa pastry and coffee, or if you prefer gluten free I love the strapatsada, an egg dish with tomatoes and feta cheese. Delicious Greek food is always a good option in my book when traveling! Any time you travel, if possible, do indulge in the local dishes and learn about the culture through food.

However, for your early breakfast, make sure you enjoy it before you want to be at the Acropolis when it opens to avoid the crowds.

Sign to the Acropolis

🏛 What is the Acropolis?

First of all, what is the Acropolis?

The Acropolis is an ancient citadel built in the 5th century BC high above the city atop the Acropolis Hill. It was built to be the home of the city’s patron goddess Athena after she won the contest for the people’s favor over Poseidon. That’s why the city is named Athens!

Mars Hill by the Acropolis Athens

Now, the Acropolis Hill is a symbol of Greek history and culture and home to some of the most iconic monuments in Athens such as the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Propylaea, and Temple of Athena Nike. In addition, the Acropolis Hill is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will also see Mars Hill where the Apostle Paul gave his famous sermon recorded in the Bible.

Visit the Acropolis before the crowds with Walks Tours

I recently had the pleasure of embarking on the Pristine Parthenon Walking Tour with Walks Tours , and it was truly an amazing experience. From skipping the long lines to the Acropolis and the New Acropolis Museum to exploring the stunning ancient structures and exhibits, this guided tour really did exceed my expectations.

If you choose to go on your own or with a tour, either way, I highly recommend getting skip the line tickets beforehand and going just as it opens.

So, what made this tour so exceptional? Let me highlight the top three things that stood out to me, and why I loved every minute of it.

Monumental Gateway on the Acropolis with Lauren in front

1. Early, skip-the-line Acropolis tickets – yes, please!

First and foremost, the ability to see the Parthenon before the crowds by using skip the line, first-entry tickets, and following the special itinerary was a game changer. As someone who typically dislikes large crowds, this was especially appreciated. To stand atop the Acropolis and take in the breathtaking views of the city without feeling rushed or crowded was a serene experience that I won’t soon forget.

I was grateful to be there early because, make no mistake, the crowds came later, even with it being May and without several of the normal cruise ships in the harbor.

2. Local guide

Secondly, exploring the Acropolis with an expert local guide was a true treat. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the structures we were seeing and provided fascinating historical context that I wouldn’t have found on my own.

I also loved that she pointed out her primary school on the way and described how her teacher would take her students weekly up Acropolis Hill and conduct class at any one of the many ancient sites. How lucky was she to grow up there??

View of the street on the way up Acropolis Hill

From the Monumental Gateway and Erechtheum to the Theater of Dionysus and Herodes Atticus, I felt like I was truly getting the most out of my visit to this iconic landmark.

3. Skip the line Acropolis Museum tickets

Lastly, the skip the line access to the New Acropolis Museum was a highlight in itself. Being able to see the original Parthenon Marbles up close and personal, as well as the Caryatids and underground excavations, was a dream come true for any history buff. And yes, history was one of my college majors, but that’s another story in itself.

Statue at the Acropolis Museum

The museum building is a feat of modern architecture, with massive glass walls and an aesthetically pleasing design that perfectly pairs with its artifacts.

All of these factors combined made for an unforgettable experience at the Acropolis. And I’d be remiss not to mention that the all-inclusive tour tickets meant that I didn’t have to worry about figuring out additional costs – everything was taken care of for me.

Key Acropolis sites

Here’s a list of the sites on the tour or ones you should definitely visit if exploring on your own:

  • Monumental Gateway
  • Temple of Athena Nike
  • Theater of Dionysus

View of the Theater of Dionysus

  • Theater of Herodes Atticus
  • New Acropolis Museum
  • Underground excavations
  • Parthenon Marbles
  • Finds from the slopes of the Acropolis

In summary, if you’re looking for a truly pristine and special experience at the Acropolis, the Pristine Parthenon Walking Tour with Walks Tours is perfect when trying to get the most out of only one day in Athens. From skipping the crowds to exploring the structures and exhibits with an expert guide, I can’t recommend this tour enough.

The Acropolis with views of the monuments

Walks Tours

There are longer tours you may wish to take, full day tours or others, but you may also want some time to explore on your own. You can browse the various Athens Walks Tours here .

I have to say, I’d really like to go back and try out their 4-hour Ultimate Athens Food Tour! Because, if you’re like me, trying all the local foods and dishes is a huge part of learning about the culture and half the fun!

The Caryatids

Stop by the Roman Agora

After your visit to the Acropolis, be sure to take a walk down to the Roman Agora. This ancient market and center of life during its heyday was an important gathering place for Athenians. The ruins are scattered around Plaka and it’s especially interesting to see/imagine how everyday life looked centuries ago in ancient Greece.

Ancient Agora of Athens

The Ancient Agora of Athens, located northwest of the Acropolis, is within walking distance and also worth a visit. This was the political and commercial center of ancient Athens and it’s fascinating to see what remains – from temples and shops to fountains and stoas (the ancient long narrow buildings with columns).

Be sure to check out the Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best-preserved temples in Greece, as well as the Stoa of Attalos, a reconstructed 2nd century BC building that houses the Museum of Agora Excavations.

Temple of Olympian Zeus

On your way back, don’t miss the Temple of Olympian Zeus. This former temple to the king of gods was eventually completed by Hadrian in 131 AD and is an impressive site. Although only 15 columns remain standing as ancient ruins today, you can still easily imagine what it must have looked like when glorious and complete.

🥘 Indulge in a Greek feast at a local taverna: restaurant recommendations

I have lots of other recommendations for things you can do to explore Athens with your day, but even if you don’t get to everything else or want to take things slower, be sure to eat well! I always recommend you make a point to enjoy at least one traditional meal in a local restaurant, or in the case of Athens, a taverna.

Overhead view of a Greek salad with feta cheese

Athens is known for its rich cultural and historical significance, and not to forget its delectable cuisine! Traditional tavernas steeped in history and authenticity are the perfect way to experience the true taste of Athens. Here are 5 suggestions for traditional tavernas to visit while in Athens (or find your own gem and tell me about it!):

To Kafeneio

The charming Kafeneio Taverna in the heart of Plaka has a warm and inviting atmosphere that will transport you to a different era. The menu boasts traditional dishes with a modern twist, and the food is made with fresh, local ingredients. Try their delicious moussaka and lamb chops, and wash it down with a glass of local wine.

Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani

Enriched with history and tradition, the Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani Taverna located in the historic center of Athens provides the guests with a culinary experience like no other. The menu boasts of a variety of cold meat platters, cheeses, and traditional cured meats, all accompanied by a variety of sauces made from locally sourced ingredients.

This family-run Psaras Taverna has been serving authentic Greek cuisine for over 100 years. Located near the picturesque area of Thissio, the menu offers an array of traditional Greek dishes, including their famous grilled fish, cooked to perfection.

If you want a traditional dining experience with a side of entertainment, Byzantino is the place for you. This taverna offers live music and dance performances every evening, while you savor their delicious grilled meats, fresh seafood, and traditional plates such as stuffed peppers and tomato keftedes.

Diporto Agoras

This hidden, non-touristy gem is located in the bustling central market of Athens. Diporto Agoras is more of a dining experience than a regular taverna, as it has an underground alley location that dates back to the early 20th century. The menu includes traditional Greek dishes cooked to perfection, such as meatballs in tomato sauce, moussaka, and stuffed vine leaves. The atmosphere is also unique, and you can see locals chatting away over their meals, adding to the overall authentic experience.

Whether you’re looking for a cozy spot to sip on wine, or a lively atmosphere with live music, visit at least one of these tavernas in Athens to leave you with a lasting impression of Greek hospitality and cuisine.

Front view of a bottle of white wine

As you only have one day, pick and choose what most interests you! Here are some of my favorite options to include in a one day Athens itinerary.

Monastiraki Square in Athens

Monastiraki Square in Athens is a great place to spend the afternoon. Just a short walk from the Ancient Agora of Athens, or the Acropolis, this square is full of vendors selling souvenirs, handicrafts, and traditional Greek food. Stroll around the flea market, take pictures, and watch the world go by as you soak up the local atmosphere.

rhapsody travel athens

Check out the street art in Athens – Psirri neighborhood

The Psirri neighborhood in Athens is known for its vibrant street art. Just a couple of minutes walk north of Monastiraki, check out the work of local street artists, learn about their stories, and take some photos to capture your day while you walk toward Evripidou Street.

Browse the eclectic stores of Evripidou Street

For the shoppers, Evripidou Street is a lively area full of eclectic stores and small boutiques. From vintage finds to handmade items, you’re sure to find something special just a 5-10 minute walk north of Monastiraki Square. And if shopping isn’t your thing, have a snack or coffee at one of the many cafes located on this street.

Browse the Athens Central Markets

From Evripidou Street, it’s only about a 3 minute walk to the Athens Central Market (Varvakios), the perfect place to visit if you want to get an authentic taste of traditional Athenian culture. From fresh fish and locally-sourced produce to unique souvenirs and handmade goods, the market has something for everyone.

Piles of nuts in the Athens Central Market

Visit the National Archaeological Museum

The National Archaeological Museum of Athens houses some of the most important archeological artifacts from Greece’s past. Visit the museum to learn more about history, culture, and mythology. Generally, I would visit this museum only if you have more than one day, but it’s up to you! If you would rather not walk around the squares and markets, then the museum is a good option instead.

Syntagma Square, the Greek Parliament Building, and the Evzones – An Athens must see

If you’re looking to get a full view of Athens, then Syntagma Square is the place for you! This vibrant and bustling plaza is home to the Parliament building, several monuments and statues, and most notably, the Evzones. Every hour on the hour (except at night) the royal guard changes in an elaborate ceremony that’s definitely worth seeing.

Another popular option: The Panathenaic Stadium

The Panathenaic Stadium is the home of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It’s definitely worth a visit to see this iconic white marble stadium and take photos from different angles. This will also give you an insight into ancient Greek architecture, and make for some beautiful sightseeing.

Evening option one: A Greek bouzoukia

Experience the nightlife of Athens with a visit to a popular Greek bouzoukia club. Here you can expect live music, dancing, and singing until the early hours of the morning!

Or also, in downtown Athens or the city centre, you will find many rooftop bars giving you modern day Greece paired with the old as you have great views of the Acropolis. The popular Thission neighborhood also has tons of cafes, bars, and a thriving nightlife.

Evening option two: strolling through central Athens

As the sun sets, there’s no better way to end your day than by strolling through central Athens. Make sure to wander down cobbled streets and explore all the hidden gems that the ancient city has to offer. After your day of exploration and adventure, end it all with a meal at one of the many tavernas in Athens. Enjoy a traditional Greek feast and get a taste of the local hospitality!

What is the best month to visit Athens, Greece?

The best time to visit Athens is from April to May or September to October. During these months the weather is mild and the crowds are slightly smaller, making for a more enjoyable experience.

What is the best way to get around Athens?

The public transportation system in Athens is quite good, with buses, trams, and subway lines that can take you to the city center or from one side of the city to the other. Alternatively, there are plenty of taxis available as well, just have cash if you flag one down or book with Uber or another app to use a credit card.

What are the most significant cultural monuments in Athens?

The most significant cultural monuments in Athens include the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Make sure to put these on your sightseeing list if you’re visiting!

Are there any museums I should visit in Athens?

Absolutely! There are plenty of museums that are worth seeing when you’re in Athens, such as the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, the Acropolis Museum, and the Benaki Toy Museum. Or check out some of the more offbeat museums like the Byzantine and Christian Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, or the Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum.

Two female figures in the Acropolis Museum

What kind of food should I try in Athens?

Greek cuisine is known for its delicious variety of dishes. Make sure to try some souvlaki, dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), moussaka (eggplant casserole), and oh the Greek salads!! YUM! It’s also nice to go to a cafe after the taverna to get a cup of coffee or something sweet to finish off your meal!

One day in Athens: Where to stay?

If you’re visiting Athens for only one day, you’ll want to stay somewhere central so you can make the most of your time. There are plenty of hotels in the city center that are close to attractions like Syntagma Square and the Acropolis. Additionally, there are lots of Airbnb options available if you prefer a more local experience. I most recently had an awesome experience with the Acropolis Stay apartment!

What’s the best way to spend half a day in Athens?

If you only have HALF a day to spend in Athens, I would definitely do the Pristine Parthenon Walks Tour. It’s three and a half hours and you will see the Acropolis and ancient sites around the Parthenon and end in the Acropolis Museum. From there, find a local taverna to enjoy before you leave the city!

Conclusion: It’s time to go to Greece!

It is so hard to decide exactly what to do in Athens in one day!

No matter what you decide to do in Athens during your stay, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience. With so many things to see and do in the city, it’s easy to fall in love with the Greek culture and way of life.

The Greek flag atop the Acropolis

Whether you’re just beginning your journey to the Greek Islands or are in Athens as a starting point to explore the Peloponnese, make sure to take some time to explore the city and experience all it has to offer! With its incredible ancient monuments and stunning views, Athens will be a journey you’ll never forget.

Enjoy your stay in Greece and don’t forget to make time for a little relaxation – it’s just as important! Happy exploring!

Rhapsody Of The Seas Itineraries

Rhapsody of the seas review, review of rhapsody of the seas.

The 1997-built Rhapsody of the Seas cruise ship is of the Vision-class Royal Caribbean liners, with sisterships Vision OTS , Grandeur OTS , Enchantment OTS , Legend OTS (now Marella Discovery 2) , Splendour OTS (now Marella Discovery) .

The vessel (IMO number 9116864) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311805000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Royal Caribbean International (RCI) is a US passenger shipping company, trademarked travel brand, and subsidiary owned by Royal Caribbean Group (RCG/shipowner). RCI was established in 1968 and currently has over 1/5 of the worldwide cruise market. RCI also has RCG's largest fleet by both vessel number and GT tonnage (ship sizes and capacities).

All RCI liners have names ending with "of the Seas".

Rhapsody Of The Seas cruise ship (Royal Caribbean)

The 2000-passenger ship Rhapsody OTS is one of Royal Caribbean's older liners. In addition to a family suite and new staterooms being added, upgrades to the ship included new dining venues, an outdoor movie screen poolside, lounges for elite past guests, digital signage and a nursery.

The first RCI vessels to offer balconies in a number of categories, the Vision-class ships feature acres of glass skylights allowing sunlight to flood in. Each ship boasts a soaring central atrium at its heart anchored by a chic bar filling with music after dark - the ideal spot for watching the aerial performances overhead.

Decks and Cabins

Rhapsody Of The Seas staterooms (1013 total, in 24 grades) include 98 Suites, 136 Balcony, 372 Oceanviews, 407 Inside. Cabin sizes vary between 130-150-190 ft2 (12-14-18 m2). Most cabin balconies are sized 40 ft2 / 4 m2. The largest is the Royal Suite (1185 ft2 / 110 m2 plus 140 ft2 / 13 m2 terrace). Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 14.

The boat has 12 decks , of which 11 are passenger-accessible and 5 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Rhapsody of the Seas got a new image with the refurbishment in March 2012. The US$16 million makeover was part of Royal Caribbean's USD 300 million, 3-year "Royal Advantage" fleet renovation program for adding facilities and amenities found on the Oasis-class liners. A number of Oasis-class dining options were added to Rhapsody of the Seas, effectively doubling the choices. New dining venues include the Asian Izumi, the Italian Giovanni's Table serving family-style dishes and Park Cafe deli - a casual bistro concept borrowed from Oasis and Allure. The ribbon was also cut on a new Chops Grille, Royal Caribbean's signature option for grilled meats and seafood (US$30 per person), and the Chef's Table, a US$95 wine-paired dinner hosted by the executive chef and sommelier.

Follows the complete list of Rhapsody of the Seas restaurants and food bars.

  • Edelweiss Restaurant (1090-seat aft Dining Room; offers Brasserie 30 lunch on sea days; Chef's Table)
  • Windjammer Cafe Lido buffet restaurant (710-seat, offers Early Breakfast at 6:30 a.m., Breakfast between 7-11:30 am, Lunch 11.30-3:30 pm, Dinner 6.30-9 p.m.)
  • Chops Grille (specialty restaurant; reservations recommended)
  • Giovanni's Table (79-seat Italian specialty restaurant)
  • Izumi (Asian specialty restaurant)
  • Park Cafe (76-seat deli restaurant; complimentary - serves the Solarium area).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The hub of Rhapsody OTS' entertainment is the Centrum Atrium, which got a complete makeover during drydock 2012. Its lowest level is on Deck 4, where the R Bar serves classic martinis in a '60s mod decor setting. All the action takes place there, including art auctions, ballroom dance classes, cooking demos, audience-participation games and late-night dance parties.

The Centrum Atrium soars up to Deck 8. The upper reaches were outfitted with rigging and stage lighting for aerial acrobatic performances.

The ship features a few main lounges. Broadway Melodies is one of the most functional with seating on fixed banquettes, which provides adequate space to enter and exit. Space is maximized as the tables have been eliminated in favor of comfy drink holders on armrests. The theatre is done up in jade-green marble, with furniture in matching leather and turquoise brocade. On a week-long cruise, expect several performances by the ship's singers and dancers, as well as a few specialty acts.

Additional amenities include Complimentary 24-hour Room-Service, Supervised Youth program, Internet/WiFi Access, Laundry, Self-Serve Laundromats (14).

Follows the complete list of Rhapsody of the Seas lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens and adults.

Rhapsody OTS also offers voyages in Europe (Mediterranean departures from homeports Civitavecchia/Rome - Ravenna - Piraeus/Athens - Barcelona ) and occasionally in South America (from Santos and Buenos Aires ), with Transatlantic crossings (RepositionCruises.com) between Europe and South America.

For winter 2022-2023, Rhapsody OTS was homeported in Bridgetown Barbados (starting November 2022), to operate 5-7-8-14-night roundtrips. The itineraries were themed as "Southern Caribbean Island Hop" (5-night and 7-night), "Southern Caribbean Adventure" (7-night), "Southern Caribbean Holiday" (8-night), "Ultimate Caribbean" (14-night).

During the summers of 2022 and 2023 (August-September) the ship was homeported in Limassol (Cyprus Island, Greece) . The 7-day roundtrips visited ports in Greece (Thessaloniki), Greek Islands (Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, Skiathos), Turkey (Istanbul, Kusadasi), Israel (Haifa, Ashdod), and Egypt (Alexandria, Port Said). Roundtrips from Israel ( Haifa ) are also offered.

For winter 2023-2024 (December-April), Rhapsody OTS had scheduled an (RCI-first) Caribbean and Latin America program based on 3x departure ports/homeports - two in Panama ( Colon , and Panama City/Fuerte Amador ) and one in Colombia ( Cartagena ). The 7-night roundtrip itineraries visited the Panama Canal (full transit between Colon and Fuerte Amador) and Holland's ABC islands ( Aruba , Bonaire , Curacao ) in the Leeward Antilles. The Panama Canal itinerary (8x departures from Fuerte Amador) was planned to visit Cartagena, and Costa Rica's Puntarenas and Quepos . However, in Aug 2023, this program was unexpectedly canceled and replaced with 7-day Southern Caribbean itineraries leaving roundtrip from (homeports) Colon and Cartagena and excluding the Panama Canal transition.

Rhapsody Of The Seas Wiki

Rhapsody OTS was built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique Shipyard ( St Nazaire, France ). The inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) started on May 19, 1997.The ship's godmother was Bodil Wilhelmsen - the wife of Gjert Wilhelmsen (principal stockholder in RCCL).

Ship's Atrium is 6-deck tall and called Centrum. Its bottom floor (lobby level) has a bar, grand piano and a large dance floor. The Centrum's main level is also home for many activities like trivia games, cooking classes, song and dance aerial acrobatics performances, art auctions. And there is no chance for missing the fun here because you should pass this area to get anywhere on the ship. The top of the Centrum is for the Viking Crown Lounge area - "the place" for your scenery views during the voyage.

The liner's namesakes are the cruiseferry GNV Rhapsody (1996), and the riverboats Amadeus Rhapsody (1998) and River Rhapsody (1999).
