Tank described his final album as “a labor of love to my fans and to the genre of R&B.” He added, “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for artists like Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, Keith Sweat, Al Green, as well as my fans who inspire me every day to make music. Breaking news, new edition is going on tour in 2023. here’s how to get tickets today..

New Edition performs together onstage.

New Edition is getting back into the New Jack Swing of things.

Following a massive 2022 tour, the famed R&B group decided to do it all over again next year and will take their “Legacy Tour” to arenas all over North America from March 9 through April 30.

And no, you don’t have to worry the whole group— Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph and Johnny— will be there.

To sweeten the deal, they’re bringing along fellow icons Keith Sweat, the recently reunited Guy and Tank along for the ride as well.

On the 30-concert trek, New Edition and their impressive roster of opening acts will drop into the NY/NJ area three times— first up, they’ll hit Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on March 18, then Newark’s Prudential Center on March 19 and finally, Elmont’s UBS Arena on April 20.

So, if you count yourself among the many #NE4Lifers and can’t wait to hear “Candy Girl,” live, here’s everything you need to know about the 2023 “Legacy Tour.”

New Edition 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar featuring all upcoming tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

New Edition opening acts

The lineup for the “Legacy Tour” is truly stacked. In the off chance you’re not acquainted with the tour’s special guests, we’ve got a quick refresher ready to go for you.

Keith Sweat has five Top 10 Billboard hits and 14 huge albums under his belt, making him a bona fide headliner in his own right. In fact, he’s got a few arena gigs of his own lined up for next year. If you’re looking to fall in love with his music all over again, give “Twisted,” one of the all-time great slow jams, a spin.

Guy , currently made up of Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall and Damion Hall, broke up in 1991 and has reunited multiple times since the initial split. Most recently, the New Jack Swing pioneers played a handful of gigs in 2018-19 where they busted out their classic hits “Let’s Chill” and “Groove Me.”

Tank is a bit newer to the scene, getting his start in 2001. Over the past two decades, he’s steadily released music— including smash singles “Maybe I Deserve,” “Please Don’t Go” and “When We”— and developed a nice acting career as well. You very may well recognize him from his work in “The Real Husbands of Hollywood,” “Grown Folks” and, of course, “The New Edition Story.”

Huge R&B tours in 2023

Our musical forecast for next year: Expect lots of slow dances and party-starting anthems.

That’s because many of the biggest names in R&B have lined up tours in the coming months.

Rather than overwhelm you, here are just five of our favorite can’t miss acts you have to catch when they come to a city near you this winter, spring and summer.

“Few recording artists can attest to a superior 40-year career that stands the test of time, but New Edition can. When we partnered with NE for “The Culture Tour,” although I knew it would be stellar, their show exceeded my expectations; the guys were nothing short of miraculous. We are excited about partnering with New Edition to further the legacy of the foundation they have already laid,” states BPC CEO Gary Guidry.

NEW EDITION hit the scene in 1983 with their iconic #1 debut album  Candy Girl disrupting the music industry forty years ago. That same year, the album's title cut knocked Michael Jackson's "Beat It" out of the #1 spot on the Billboard "Hot Black Singles" chart. The group has gone on to win many awards, including BET’s “Lifetime Achievement” awards, and has one of the most highly watched biopics in music history, the 3-part BET series: The New Edition Story, which attracted more than 29 million viewers. Comprised of Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill, New Edition has remained one of the most influential R&B groups in the world for close to four decades. With a vast catalog, New Edition is ready to perform a host of new hits that weren’t performed in 2022’s “The Culture Tour,” giving their fans a whole new experience to tuck in their memory book.

KEITH SWEAT entered the charts with his 3X platinum debut solo album,  Make It Last Forever , in 1987, giving the world its first New Jack Swing Billboard "Hot 100" hit, "I Want Her." The song, produced by Teddy Riley and Sweat, became the most successful R&B song in 1988 on the Billboard "Hot R&B Songs" chart. In 1997, Sweat formed the group LSG (Levert, Sweat, and Gill - Johnny Gill of New Edition), whose debut album, Levert.Sweat.Gill sold double platinum and produced the hit song "My Body," which became a platinum single, spending seven weeks at #1 on the charts. In addition to touring and making new music, Sweat currently has the #1 nationally syndicated R&B evening radio show called "The Sweat Hotel with Keith Sweat," reaching more than fifty markets across the country.

Teddy Riley ushered in a new musical genre called New Jack Swing, which included the formation of his group GUY with Aaron Hall and Damion Hall in 1987. The group's first album, the self-titled masterpiece, quickly spawned the Billboard "Hot 100" hit "I Like," which, along with four other hit singles such as "Groove Me" and "Teddy's Jam," helped to propel the debut album to double platinum status. The group disbanded after their second album,  The Future , citing the stresses of the tragic loss of their former manager. However, Teddy Riley went on to produce for the likes of Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga. In addition, he was instrumental in the rise of Bobby Brown's solo career, creating the megahit "My Prerogative," which  Complex  magazine says is the #1 New Jack Swing song of all time. The “Legacy Tour” will be the first time the group has come together to tour in more than fifteen years.

Iconic Grammy®-nominated, multi-platinum-selling R&B supergroup New Edition closed out 2022 with the highly successful “The Culture Tour,” nominated as one of the Top R&B Tours in the country by Pollstar. Selling out arenas across the country, the icons and The Black Promoters Collective (BPC) are happy to announce the 30-city “Legacy Tour” with a must-see lineup that includes a New Jack Swing reunion with Keith Sweat and the original members of Guy (Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall, and Damion Hall) and Tank will visit Little Caesars Arena on Saturday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m.

New Edition hit the scene in 1983 with their iconic #1 debut album Candy Girl disrupting the music industry 40 years ago. That same year, the album’s title cut knocked Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” out of the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart.

Keith Sweat entered the charts with his 3X platinum debut solo album, Make It Last Forever, in 1987, giving the world its first New Jack Swing Billboard Hot 100 hit, “I Want Her.” The song, produced by Teddy Riley and Sweat, became the most successful R&B song in 1988 on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart. In 1997, Sweat formed the group LSG (Levert, Sweat, and Gill – Johnny Gill of New Edition), whose debut album, Levert.Sweat.Gill sold double platinum and produced the hit song “My Body,” which became a platinum single, spending seven weeks at #1 on the charts. In addition to touring and making new music, Sweat currently has the #1 nationally syndicated R&B evening radio show called The Sweat Hotel with Keith Sweat, reaching more than 50 markets across the country.

Teddy Riley ushered in a new musical genre called New Jack Swing, which included the formation of his group Guy with Aaron Hall and Damion Hall in 1987. The group’s first album, the self-titled masterpiece, quickly spawned the Billboard Hot 100 hit “I Like,” which, along with four other hit singles such as “Groove Me” and “Teddy’s Jam,” helped to propel the debut album to double platinum status. The group disbanded after their second album, The Future, citing the stresses of the tragic loss of their former manager. However, Teddy Riley went on to produce for the likes of Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga. In addition, he was instrumental in the rise of Bobby Brown’s solo career, creating the megahit “My Prerogative,” which Complex magazine says is the #1 New Jack Swing song of all time. The “Legacy Tour” will be the first time the group has come together to tour in more than 15 years.

Nostalgia, hits of our youth, and sex filled the air…

Live Review: New Edition Legacy Tour 2023 with Keith Sweat, Guy and Tank Friday night in CLT

Nostalgia, hits of our youth, and sex filled the air.

By Dianna Augustine and guest-spot by Neel Jadeja

The second night of The Legacy Tour dropped into Charlotte, NC Friday night at the Spectrum Center . Not only did we get to cover the legends New Edition , but we got a fresh-faced performance, a lucky perk of seeing this tour early before the miles and weeks of exhaustion catch up. Within the last 40 years, the group — composed of Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Johnny Gill, and Ronnie DeVoe has upped its game. The production of this tour has had an epic evolution from as far back as I can remember. I’m thinking post early 2000s the band raged the towns with not much more than amazing choreographed pop moves, background dancers, flashy digs, and a smaller stage and light presence. There were no streamers or pyro, and we sure were not blessed with wall-to-wall multiple LCD screens that left fans in any part of the arena with an up-close and personal glimpse of their favorite band members. Even that sound has been perfected, with no scratchy feedback or almost inaudible concerts (the mid-2000s saw some of that.) The way the production was run so smoothly and band changes didn’t take an hour between each, the stage set-up you were greeted with was the stage set-up for the entire night. Many of the bands didn’t do full background bands and while I understand the time-saving efforts I was almost disappointed we weren’t getting that until I actually saw the performance. It all made sense, and in the end, didn’t deter from any form of entertainment (and that takes some mega-million skill!)

IMG_4353

When you arrived at the venue you were greeted by the solo drummer outside killing it with familiar faces on the staff guiding our way to where we needed to be.

IMG_4352

Many fans were decked to the nine waiting to see their favorite performers. Not many fans are so lucky to have a band going on 40+ years of performing live. I ran into a mother-daughter duo and I got to tell the child who she was going to see as a surprise with her mom. She freaked out in the most adorable way possible.

New Edition: The Legacy Tour

Walking into the venue you could feel the excitement. Getting to the seats for someone as afraid of stairs as I am was — interesting, but once down there around the true fans who paid their hard-earned money for a glimpse of their band up close and personal was magical. The seats were comfortable, the crowd surrounding us was lively and they added to the vibe of what was to be a great night in Charlotte.

IMG_4362

Nostalgia Personified:

Looking back, it seemed that New Edition and their all-star lineup was the original boy band. They had the perfect combination of good-looking young men, syncopated dance moves, and timeless songs. The melodic hooks appealed to teenage audiences around the world that catapulted the talented group to stardom. What started with innocent, bubble-gum, adolescent musings soon turned into coming-of-age sexually driven montages as these boys became men, as they would experience in every way. Lineup changes, personal drama, and individual success always kept New Edition’s name, story, and music in the hearts of their millions of fans.

Through all the tribulations, the six men have discovered to provide fans with a stellar evening of music that encompasses not only their careers but also the individual careers of all members in each of their endeavors. Tonight gave a minute glimpse of their 40-year spanned career and influence on the industry. Let’s dive into the deep end.

IMG_4369

Tank: That Capricorn Sex appeal; someone left pregnant tonight.

The sensual and raw unadulterated sex appeal of Tank is unmatched this night, and I’m sure any night. Most of his songs are about love-making, screaming (in pleasure,) and how you can treat a woman’s body right if you’re smart. It’s refreshing to have an artist so in tune with how to please a woman to surely be the soundtrack to many successful date nights.  It was even more interesting to watch it all unfold in real time. The crowd bumped and ground with the best of them while TANK went down a greatest hits list and, at one point, even made the air around him climax. His sultry vocals are not one to overlook even with all the sex appeal. It’s a solid performance.

Put you in the mood, When you sit it on my face, that’s my type of view Can I swim in your ocean? Can I drown in it too?

Tank was a background vocalist for Ginuwine and also one for singer Aaliyah who he met through the Ginuwine tours. He was later signed as an artist on Aaliyah’s record label Blackground Records. He released his debut album Force of Nature in 2001, and in 2022 he released what is dubbed his tenth and final album, R&B Money . Before the release, Tank announced it would be his final studio album, triggered by the loss of hearing in his right ear in 2021.

Fun fact: He was also in a supergroup TNT with Ginuwine and Tyrese.

He closed out his performance with his rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” to barely a dry eye in the building. The crisp perfect tenor vocals shot you right through the chest with the enigmatic feeling of sorrow and heartbreak after the rest of the performance had titillated you from the beginning of a dating scene, the deeper part of a relationship forming, to falling in love and wanting nothing more than to satiate your partner’s every desire. You went through an entire relationship cycle in the short 45-minute set, and he left us sad to see him go – but like any good partner he left the stage with a gentle kiss and an I love you, as all sessions should end.

legacy tour 2023

His latest (and final)  album R&B Money is out now (R&B Money/Atlantic) please go pick it up here .

As we tried to cool down from the first ear-love-making session, we had a dance party with local DJs giving us a sweet session of “Da’ Butt,” until it made us sore.

IMG_4367

The lights dimmed again, and R&B trio GUY (Hall of Fame/Universal) stormed the stage with the New Jack Swing creators and came to give us what they perfected over 36 years. They oozed confidence, soul, and the energy you want in a show to shake a damn tailfeather.

GUY opened up in blue sparkly blazers, the cryo fx smoke streams beamed from floor to ceiling, the lights flashed, and queue the background dancers and band. It was a full-on cataclysmic storm of energy and funk. The band has had its ups and downs of breakups and reconciliations, and a drama-laden bad ex-manager that emptied millions of dollars from the account. Researching them you see how they have worked with almost everyone you could think of in the R&B industry, I was watching how Teddy Riley linked up Micheal Jackson & Heavy D doing a song. It blows my mind that such a thick history of music legends was stuffed into this tour.

“Whatever you want I will do. You’re the only one I want in my life. For you I’ll make that sacrifice, so baby, Let’s chill”

Guy  (infamous producer/musician Teddy Riley and brothers Aaron and Damion Hall) set out on another 45-minute gallop to perfection with their vibe of sex, love, and admiration for the era in time they started into the present. They took us on a tour of the greatest hits and the crowd loved every moment. We sang all the words and danced until we needed a breather.

I was most impressed by the fact when the bass started it was so deep it shook you to the core. I could feel it massage my heart in both places the heart resides. No way every woman on the floor wasn’t touched in all the right ways.

Primed us again for, Keith Sweat

Keith Sweat has been dubbed THE LOVE KING OF SOUL & R&B. Tonight he emulated this. As well when he talked about his own bedroom antics he said on the subject of sexy time:

“The only one spinning on the record when I f*ck is me, I don’t want to hear from anyone else.”

He got right down to it as well – we’d been properly lubricated by the previous acts. He gave a speech also on how he’s tired of hearing he’s drunk all the time and he was going to pause and get a SINGLE DRINK of that good Hennessy and to stop the nonsense thinking it’s more than that. It was good to hear the humanity of it all before he went back into a jam-packed greatest hits.

Giving us that good good – a little bit before ending it and I felt like the need for a cigarette (and I do not smoke!) The soundtrack of a million teenage and formidable years of learning all about how to give that sweet-sweet loving and you all know you’ve spun his albums more times than you can count in those moments. He’s not shy, to remind you of this and then drop into one of his numerous hits and show you how the leader of the bunch does it. He mentioned how it was kind of strange to be an opener as he’s used to headlining but thanked NE for giving him the spot to do his thing.

The LCDs flash with images of Salt & Pepa singing the song “If you really want it,” and other remnants of the 90s when MTV was the largest thing to spin actual music (gasp) and added to the night of how the crowd walked the lanes of memories.

IMG_4355

NEW EDITION

Lights went down again, DJs took us through 90s hip-hop legends Biggie and Tupac led us down the road with DMX, and I swear I heard some backing pieces of Aaliyah up in there. We definitely did not have our trains go off the track but we picked it up. Now back on the scene, the lights flashed – we knew it was time. Steam cascaded into the dark air as spotlights gleamed and the band simultaneously rose from inside the stage donning sharp bright yellow trench coats, glittery pants, and matching fedoras to round out their look. They took us through a catalog of albums, hit singles, Johnny Gill solo stuff, Bobby Brown, and toward the end of the night trinkets from fan favorites Bel Biv Devoe.

Some of the smash hits this night were:

  • Johnny Gill’s “Rub You the Right Way,” and “My My My.”
  • Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative,” “If It Isn’t Love” and “Roni” where Brown briefly left the performance but made his appearance back a song or two later.
  • “Mr. Telephone Man”
  • “Candy Girl”
  • “Cool It Now”
  • “Popcorn Love.”
  • Bel Biv Devoe’s “Poison,” and “Do Me” late in the show.

Fun fact: Ronnie spoke on how it was his 17th wedding anniversary that night and his beautiful wife was in the crowd.

The whole performance was one of seasoned musicians back to doing what they love.

If you thought for a second that an evening starting with the powerhouse TANK, followed by the legendary R&B trio of GUY, and KEITH SWEAT dominating the stage—all before the love songs of sextet NEW EDITION wouldn’t rip the packed Spectrum Center into a frenzy?

You were wrong. The echoing screams of women and the plethora of gyrating dancing bodies in the aisles of all in attendance proved that this crowd came for sexual healing like it was 1989!

This was a night when some of us went back to jr. high and high school. There were memories brought back of old loves and old times but were now creating new moments and brand new memories. Parents brought their children, lovers brought their new hearts and lifelong fans brought their ears and souls to take them to a page in their diary that they often read again and again. This was a show for those of us that turned up the volume when we drove by her. This was a show for those of us that had crushes on the pretty girls. This was a show for those of us that wanted to get the girl. And got her.

You can catch this tour in 25+ other cities – don’t miss out.

Presidents Cup all-time results, locations, captains for U.S. vs. Internationals

The Presidents Cup was the brainchild of former PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman, the capstone of his legacy before he stepped down in June 1994.

The first Presidents Cup was played outside of Washington D.C. and former U.S. Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush were in attendance, helping to create international appeal.

The biennial competition has been a one-sided affair with the U.S. side holding a 12-1-1 record all-time. The International Team is winless since 1998 but hope springs eternal and the latest edition will be held in Montreal from Sept. 26-29.

Several future locations have also been announced with Medinah to serve as the next U.S. host in 2026.

Belgium’s appalling abuse legacy clouds pope’s trip as survivors pen letter seeking reparations

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Fresh off a four-nation tour of Asia, where he saw record-setting crowds and vibrant church communities, Pope Francis travels to Belgium this week as the once-staunchly Catholic country again confronts its appalling legacy of clergy sex abuse and institutional cover-up.

He will receive a sobering welcome: Abuse survivors have penned an open letter to Francis, asking him to launch a universal system of church reparations and assume responsibility for the wreckage that abuse has wrought on their lives.

The open letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, will be hand delivered to Francis when he meets with 15 survivors during his four-day visit starting Thursday, according to the Rev. Rik Deville, who has been advocating on behalf of abuse survivors for over a quarter-century.

Another unpleasant welcome has come from Belgium’s parliament, which spent the past year hearing victims recount harrowing stories of predator priests and this week announced a follow-on investigation. The scope? How Belgian judicial and law enforcement authorities bungled a massive 2010 criminal investigation into the church’s sex crimes.

None of this was foreseen when Belgian King Philippe and Queen Mathilde met with Francis in the Vatican Apostolic Palace on Sept. 14, 2023 and invited him to visit to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the founding of Belgium’s two Catholic universities.

That anniversary is technically the reason for Francis’ trip, which also includes a stopover in Luxembourg on Thursday and a Mass on Sunday in Brussels to beatify a 17th century mystic nun.

And in Belgium, Francis will speak about two of his pet priorities during visits to the French and Flemish campuses of the Leuven university: Immigration and climate, according to Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni.

But Bruni acknowledged in a rare preview that Francis will certainly raise Belgium’s abuse record.

“Clearly the pope is aware of the difficulty, and that for years there has been suffering in Belgium, and certainly we can expect a reference in this sense,” Bruni said.

Revelations of Belgium’s horrific abuse scandal have dribbled out in bits over a quarter-century, punctuated by the bombshell year in 2010, when the country’s longest-serving bishop, Bruges Bishop Roger Vangheluwe , was allowed to resign without punishment, after admitting he had sexually abused his nephew for 13 years.

Two months later, Belgian police staged what were then unprecedented raids on Belgian church offices, the home of the country’s recently retired Archbishop Godfried Danneels and even the crypt of a prelate — a violation the Vatican decried at the time as “deplorable.”

Danneels, a longtime friend of Francis, was caught on tape trying to persuade Vangheluwe’s nephew to keep quiet until the bishop retired. And finally, in September 2010, the church released a 200-page report compiled by child psychiatrist Peter Adriaenssens who said 507 people had come forward with stories of being molested by priests, including when they were as young as two. He identified at least 13 suicides by victims and attempts by six more.

And despite everything that was known and already in the public domain, the scandal reared its head in a shocking new way last year, when a four-episode Flemish documentary, “Godvergeten” (Godforsaken) aired on public broadcaster VRT in the weeks surrounding the royal visit to the Vatican.

For the first time, Belgian victims told their stories on camera one after another, showing Flemish viewers in their living rooms the scope of the scandal in their community, the depravity of the crimes and their systematic cover-up by the Catholic hierarchy.

“We brought nothing new. We just put it all together. We brought the voices together,” said Ingrid Schildermans, the researcher and filmmaker behind Godvergeten. “We put all the things that happened on a timeline, so that they couldn’t say ‘It’s one rotten apple.’”

“That was the thing that the documentary made clear, like this really is a system and there are really people who look away or people don’t care,” she said in an interview.

Amid the public outrage that ensued, both a Flanders parliamentary committee and Belgium’s federal parliament opened official inquests and heard months of testimony from victims, experts and the Catholic hierarchy.

Their testimonies cast new attention on a scandal that had already been blamed for the steep decline in the Catholic Church over a generation in Belgium, where church authorities don’t even publish statistics of weekly Mass attendance because the monthly rate is already in the single digits.

By March, with a papal visit already announced, Francis finally took action and defrocked Vangheluwe, 14 years after he admitted to molesting his nephew. The laicization was seen as a clear bid by the Vatican to tamp down the outrage and remove an obvious problem clouding Francis’ visit.

The parliamentary inquiries wrapped up in May, before the country’s elections. But one issue remained outstanding: What ever became of Operation Chalice, the much-touted police raids on Danneels’ residence and other church offices in 2010.

Hundreds of boxes of documents that police seized were ordered returned to the church in 2014, and the criminal investigation essentially shelved, according to victims’ lawyers Christine Mussche and Walter Van Steenbrugge. They have denounced what they call a “hallucinatory sequence of irregularities and illegalities (that) has decapitated the investigation and deprived survivors of clerical sexual abuse of their fundamental right to a fair trial .”

The parliamentary inquest, as part of its mandate, had been looking into the “possible dysfunctions” in the criminal investigation and specifically whether there was “any political, financial, national or foreign interventions, instigation, pressure and influence,” on the failed case.

Because the investigation didn’t conclude before new elections, a follow-on investigation was announced Tuesday looking into “Operation Chalice.”

All of which has left a rather bitter taste among the Belgian public ahead of Francis’ visit, not least because Francis remained tight with Danneels even after his cover-up was exposed, and again showed ignorance of Belgium’s problem when he named the retired bishop of Ghent a cardinal in 2022. The bishop declined the honor because of his poor record dealing with abuse.

The visit has also in some cases retraumatized victims, some of whom had sought to meet with the pope only to be told by church authorities they didn’t make the cut, said Schildermans.

“It’s for them a very, very stressful and frustrating time,” she said.

It’s a far different atmosphere than the rapturous welcome Francis received in Asia less than two weeks ago and far removed from the excitement that surrounded St. John Paul II when he toured Belgium in 1985.

Even De Standaard, one of Belgium’s main dailies which long was seen as the most Catholic, had a big weekend takeout under the headline “How revolutionary is Pope Francis really?” The dead giveaway: Not really.

Tuesday brought further evidence of how Belgium’s dreadful record of abuse, cover-up and insensitivity to victims had clouded Francis’ visit.

Bishop Patrick Hoogmartens of northern Limburg announced he wouldn’t take part in celebratory papal events, after revelations that he had just warmly eulogized a priest who was known to have been involved in an abuse case.

“I didn’t make the assessment that it would hurt an abuse victim from the 1970s,” he told TV Limburg.

How wonderful it is to be talking about a new Nick Lowe album in 2024!

It's a great record, but I disagree with Nick about those EPs - they are a treasure. If you like Indoor Safari, Yep Roc still has those original EPs.

A Portrait that Captures Clayton Rose and His Legacy

In opening remarks before a filled Hubbard Hall Reading Room, President Safa Zaki welcomed Clayton and Julianne Rose back to Bowdoin and highlighted three of what she called Rose's most important legacies—his commitment to expanding opportunities for students from all backgrounds, his commitment to the teaching and study of the environment, and the importance of living and learning in spaces that enhance both.

Clayton Rose portrait - with Clayton Rose and artist Lance Wurzel

Wurzel, who attended Bowdoin for one year in 1999 before transferring to Brown University, spoke next. The artist shared with the crowd that her foundation in portraiture was learned from A. LeRoy Greason Professor of Art (now Emeritus) Mark Wethli, who was also in attendance, and explained Rose's desire—and hers—to do something a little different than the presidential portraits of the past. She spoke of the influence of Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald, the artists behind the portraits of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama and how she used various hues and tints of blues and greens to capture Rose in a decidely casual pose and in his favorite color.

Rose was gracious in his praise of Wurzel's work and thanked President Zaki for welcoming him back to campus and for the work she is doing to further the mission of the College.

"Being part of the Bowdoin community is the privilege of a lifetime," Rose said, adding that despite the challenges, a reference to an earlier mention of his leadership of the College through the pandemic, his eight years in office were among the most important and satisfying of his life. Rose also took the opportunity to share his appreciation for the friendships he and Julianne have made among faculty, staff, students, and others in the Brunswick community, saying it's the love that has made their Bowdoin experience "so very special."

Wurzel completed Rose's portrait in 2023. A late spring snowstorm delayed the official reception of the portrait from April 4 to September 19.

Wurzel's bright, contemporary painting represents a departure from previous Bowdoin portraits, perhaps most prominently by showing Rose outside. Bowdoin’s fifteenth president stands before a quintessentially midcoast Maine landscape evocative of the College’s Schiller Coastal Studies Center. He wears a blue blazer but no tie, and a relaxed but attentive expression, with his head slightly titled to one side.

Anne Collins Goodyear, codirector of Bowdoin College Museum of Art, said that every Bowdoin presidential portrait—starting with Joseph McKeen, the College's first president in 1802—reflects its historical moment, often with deliberate innovation. Rose's likeness is just the latest to take a creative turn. “Clayton's portrait offers an expansive view of the College. It conceptualizes Bowdoin as part of the larger state of Maine, suggesting the breadth of our campus and its coastal setting.”

All previous portraits portray Bowdoin’s presidents inside, with recent portraits depicting their subjects in particular places: Robert Edwards in his office and Barry Mills in the rotunda of the Museum of Art.  “To me Clayton’s portrait it is resonant with his larger commitment to the environment, particularly to the Schiller Coastal Studies Center and the Roux Center for the Environment,” Goodyear added.

One of Rose's priorities as president was to make Bowdoin a leading college for the study of the environment. He oversaw the fundraising and construction of the Roux Center in 2018 and the expansion of the Schiller campus in Harpswell in 2020.

Continuing with her analysis, Goodyear commented on the style of the painting, noting that while it captures the likeness of Rose, it also contains beautiful abstract qualities. She pointed to the ripples in the water, the wispy blue clouds, a narrow strip of green land.

Helena “Lanie” Wurzel received her BA from Brown University in 2003, and her MFA in painting from Boston University in 2007. She has taught at many institutions, including Rhode Island School of Design, Boston University, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and University of New Hampshire. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with her husband and two children. On her website, she writes, “My style tends to be bold and graphic, with formal elements such as light and reflections used to create specific moods. I hope to unlock the extraordinary in everyday scenes.”

“I love the linearity, I love the way the jacket looks like it could be waves on the water, the cloth could be the sky. There is a conscious and strategic harmonizing of Wurzel’s representation of her subject with the environment that he inhabits,” she observed.

Goodyear said she also appreciates how the artist captures Rose's “warmth, his interest in engaging with people. Clayton seems to greet us as if we're in front of him.” With its bold lighting and colors, Goodyear said the painting “feels like an approachable portrait,” much like Rose, himself. While the Rose portrait is at first glance striking in its uniqueness, the president did follow precedent in one way: he selected an artist based in the Northeast. “Wurzel is someone who has an affinity for light, coastal scenes, and New England in particular,” Goodyear said. “She follows in a long line of New England artists who have been called in to depict Bowdoin presidents.”

A Tour Through Past Painted Presidents

Past portraits of Bowdoin's presidents— all fifteen of them —hang on the second floor of Hubbard Hall. Moving from one to the next offers viewers a chance to stroll through College history.

Goodyear, who was a curator at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery before coming to Bowdoin, said portraits accomplish several tasks—they say something about their subject, as well as comment on the era in which they were created.

Even more so, “There are particular genres of portraiture that are intended to do particular work for us,” to open insight into individuals, our society, and our institutions, “and there is no question that the category of presidential portrait is one of those very special sorts of images,” she said.

Each of Bowdoin's presidential paintings, like Wurzel's, also contains a deviation from its predecessors that modernizes the piece. While some of these are more subtle than others, they're all noticeable if you look closely enough.

The portrait of Barry Mills (2001–2015) is the first to depict the president without his academic robes. In his portrait, Bob Edwards (1990–2001) is the first to smile, and also the first to be shown in a relaxed standing position (he is leaning against his office desk).

Goodyear said the Rose painting, while quite distinct, “will be a wonderful addition to presidential portraits in Hubbard Hall...Like its predecessors, Rose's portrait says something about the moment in which it was depicted and the particular interests and proclivities of the subject that inspired it.”

“The innovation that Clayton's portrait offers is the movement away from campus. This portrait conceptualizes Bowdoin in the larger state of Maine, suggesting the breadth of our campus and its coastal setting.”

—Anne Collins Goodyear, co-director of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art
