UPES Dehradun QnA

University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) is a well-known institute for providing education in many Graduate  and Post Graduate courses. The campus of UPES has covered an area of 44 acres in the city of Dehradun. The Bidholi Campus is spread over an area of 30 acres while the Kandoli campus has covered an area of almost 12 acres of land. The University has a green campus spread over a built-up area of  933,000 sqft .

Many classrooms are available at the campus of University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) providing a combined seating capacity to 10,0000+ Students. The smart classrooms of the college have LCD Projectors, Black/Whiteboards, Wireless Mics & Speakers, Attendance Card Reader Machines and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The campus of UPES Dehradun University has a computer centre consisting of advanced technologies with an internet bandwidth of 1 Gbps. All labs have software alliances with IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, and many more. As the college focuses on updating its students with modern technologies trending in the world, Cloud Labs are available for providing education about Cloud Technology. There is a network of more than 9,000+ computers installed collectively at the campus. These systems are managed by 70 servers.

The Library of UPES University contains a collection of 1,09,625+ publications and more than 100 printed and 5,443 e-journals. The library of the college provides access to the students specialized portals on Oil & Gas, and Power, and other sector-related information. Around 725  students can sit at the college library at a time for group studies or book study. An e-enabled student-teacher interaction based Learning Management System is installed at the library of the campus.

Both campuses of the university provide residential facility to more than 2000 students. Hostel rooms will be allocated to students on a first-come-first-serve basis. The college has taken care of the comfort for their students as they had installed many facilities at hostel buildings of both campuses. Residential blocks have been earmarked for limited on-campus accommodation separately for boys and girls on triple sharing basis. The UPES Dehradun hostel fee is given below for the academic session of 2020-21 for triple sharing basis.

• Fee:  Rs.1,57,500/- Regular hostels for boys and girls at Bidholi and Kandoli campus.

Certain additional facilities are available for girl students at the Kandoli campus only. The fee for the same is mentioned below.

• Rs.1,75,750/- for hostel room with attached washroom (only for girls)
• Rs.1,97,750/- for hostel room with attached washroom and air conditioning (only for girls)

In addition to the hostel fees, the students have to pay an interest-free refundable Hostel Security Fee of Rs. 10,000/- at the time of registration. Students who wish to avail the hostel facility at UPES Dehradun will have to provide a medical certificate and a police verification report. Under no circumstances will the student get any refund if he/ she withdraws from availing the hostel facility. 

Other recreational facilities including a playground,  sports complexes, common reading rooms, open laboratories are available at the UPES University campuses. The University keeps organising events at the University campus like Athletics Meet, Annual Blood Donation Camp, UURJA Annual Youth Festival, Uurja Club Volleyball tournament, Athletics Meet, Handball Tournament, Anti-Substance Abuse Campaign etc. The college provides transportation facility to the students. Medical Facility is also available at the college campus.

UPES Dehradun Hostel & Fees Structure

Residential blocks have been earmarked for limited on – campus accommodation (on first come first serve  basis) separately for boys and girls on triple sharing basis. Student wishing to avail hostel facility (On-campus)  will need to deposit fee in advance.  The fee indicated below is for academic session 2021-22 only and is on triple sharing basis  Fee:  Rs.1, 70,000/- Regular hostel for boys and girls at Bidholi and Kandoli campus.  However, for girl students we also have a few additional triple sharing rooms with ad-on facilities only at the Kandoli  campus as indicated below:  ? Rs.1,90,000/- for hostel room with attached washroom (only for girls)  ? Rs.2,13,500/- for hostel room with attached washroom and Air conditioning (only for girls)  In additional to hostel fee an Interest free refundable Hostel Security Fee of Rs.10, 000/- will be taken at the time of registration  Note: - Students desirous of availing the campus hostel facility should submit the following documents along with the requisite  hostel fee without fail.  Note: - Hostel Refund: will be as per UGC Norms.  ? Medical Certificate*  ? Police Verification Report* (from their respective city/town) *Format is available in registration letter sent separately only to admitted students. 

Students Activities & Clubs

Hostel : Upes Dehradun has hostels for both boys and girls inside both the campuses. It has 3 towers which are two for boys and one for girls. Food mess is available from early morning till late night. Everything which is eatable is available there.

Infrastructure : Our college does not have its permanent campus however it is under construction. It will be completed in jan 2025. And currebtky it is running at Andhra University. And overall it is nice.

Hostel : Hostels are very nice and overall it has best hostels. Wr have 2 sharing rooms and gym and sports facilities. Mess food is ok which need to be improved.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure : The UPES campus is widespread about 44 acres and comprises of all facilities needed by a college going student be it a well equipped library and also a big sports complex.

Hostel : I am a day scholar and cannot say much about the hostel life but as my classmates stay in the campus hostel i have heard many things like rooms are good and food but not like home.

Infrastructure : The campus of UPES Dheradun is vibrant and full of positivity. The university has academic blocks, library, auditoriums, canteen, laboratories, computer labs, sports facilities etc. Our annual fest was conducted in the February and it lasted for three days.

Hostel : The university has a wide a range of hostel facilities for students. I reside in a triple sharing room. The room is spacious and ventilated. For summers, AC is installed (with extra charges). The food served in mess is also delicious.

Infrastructure : Despite having a huge campus, the facilities at UPES Dehradun are not upgraded as per lastest standard. The computer labs still have old softwares. However, the university has installed projectors in classrooms but most of them are unfunctional.

Hostel : I stayed in hostel for one semester and after that i rented out a flat nearby the campus. There was no discipline or decorum in the hostel. Students used to go out during night right under the nose of warden. Depsite charing hefty fee of Rs 1,65,000-2,20,000 per annum, there wasn't comfort. The good thing was food at mess.

Infrastructure : Infrastructure in UPES college I feel very decent and hygienic. Although I got some issues but overall rememberable experience with Infrastructure of college.

Hostel : Hostel facility provided here is great . Although I have not ever lived in hostel there. But my friends were happy about hostel facility provided by college.

Infrastructure : It is very nice and some part is recently renovated. Campus is not too big but the whole area is occupied by university students. Although it wouldn't be a factor for choosing a good university.

Hostel : There are too many hostels around the campus as well as in the campus and gives many facilties like Air conditioning,One Table and Chair, etc.There are atleast 50 hostels

Infrastructure : There is Wi-Fi all over the campus. There is a huge library with a millions of books of each and every field. All the classrooms are very much spacious with smart Boards and labs are full of PC. Hostels are of double sharing and triple sharing including rooms with common washroom as well as separate washrooms. The food at the mess is very delicious and hygienic. There is a infirmary in our campus for medical issues and an ambulance in case of emergency.

Infrastructure : Whole University is well equipped with thing which they should have , there are good libraries and places where you alcan study and places to enjoys .

Hostel : There ar two hostel campus, bidholi and kandoli . You can say they are a bit expensive but once you reach there, you will fill that they are worth it

Infrastructure : This University of Petroleum and energy studies has 2 campuses. One is at Bidholi and one is at Kandoli. The main campus is Bidholi. My hostel is at Kandoli and my classes are used to have at Bidholi.

Hostel : Hostel facilities are available at both the campus - Kandoli and Bidholi. I have experience for both the campus but I must say Bidholi has better campus for Hostel. Both hostels has god facilities overall, hostel parties and floor parties also the part of hostels. It's enjoyable and exciting experience!!

University Of Petroleum And Energy Studies, Dehradun  is popularly known as  UPES Dehradun . The university was established under the UPES Act, 2003. UPES is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The university is accredited by NAAC with a Grade ‘A’. UPES has sprawling 44 acres campuses in Dehradun, namely UPES Bidholi and UPES Kandoli. As per NIRF 2023 rankings, UPES has ranked 79 for overall and 52 for the University.

UPES offers 20+ industry-aligned and specialized UG and PG programs through its seven schools: School of Engineering, School of Computer Science, School of Design, School of Law, School of Business, School of Health Sciences and School of Modern Media. UPES B.Tech is the flagship program offered in 20 specializations. Selection to the B.Tech program is based on JEE Main or UPESEAT conducted by the university. The total fee for the program is INR 15.21 lakhs. The university’s MBA course is also quite popular. Admission to the UPES MBA program is based on CAT/XAT/MAT/UPESMET. The University conducts UPESEAT for BTech and UPESMET for MBA admission. Apart from these, UPES Dehradun also accepts several nation-level entrance exams score for admission to various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Given below is a list of course-wise entrance exams accepted by UPES: 

UPES Dehradun Infrastructure

The University campus is spread over an area of 44 acres with domain-specific labs, hostels and facilities for curricular and extra-curricular activities. Some of the highlights of the infrastructure of UPES is as follows:

Library: UPES library has a seating capacity of more than 400 students and contains over 73,327 volumes of publications including books, standards, reports, proceedings and more than 150 National and International journals. It also has a rich collection of online resources in terms of CDs, access to specialized portals on oil and gas and power-related information.

Hotels: UPES has a separate hostel for boys and girls with a capacity of more than 2000 students at the Bidholi and Kandoli campuses. All the hostels have a wi-fi facility for learning. A common room has been provided in each hostel for relaxation and a 24*7 power backup and solar power water heaters facility is available.

Cafeteria: The university has a multi-storied food court within the campus, it has a number of food courts and cafeterias with a modern ambience to provide nutritious and balanced meals, snacks and beverages to students of both campuses.

Sports Complex : UPES has a multipurpose playground for playing hockey, cricket, football and other sports with world-class sports facilities and equipment.

UPES Dehradun offers 20+ UG, PG and Diploma Courses across both campuses. These courses are offered in the field of Engineering, Management, Computer Science, Law, Business and Media. The university conducts UPESMET, UPESEAT, UPESDAT, and ULSAT for admission to its courses. Further, UPES also considers national-level entrance tests such as JEE Main, CAT, MAT, XAT, CLAT, and GATE to name a few. Tabulated below are some of the popular courses offered at UPES Dehradun:

UPES Dehradun Scholarships

B.Tech Scholarships: The UPES B.Tech scholarships are offered on the basis of merit and the Uttarakhand state board. The university also considers JEE Main scores. Listed below are the details for the same:

• Merit-Based Scholarship: The scholarship is offered to students securing an aggregate of 80% marks in classes X and XII and 80% marks in PCM for B.Tech. The scholarships will be limited to 10% of seats in each B.Tech Program. Scholarships will be allotted for the first Semester in Merit order to eligible candidates. Further, the scholarships will be awarded based on Merit only and the continuation of scholarships in the subsequent years will be as per the University policy. The Scholarship amount is 50% of the Tuition fee for the first semester.
• Scholarship for Uttarakhand State Board Toppers: The merit order allotment of the Uttarakhand State Board is 1 seat per program. The seats reserved under this category will be within the 15% reservation for Uttarakhand resident students. The candidates must have “Sthai Niwas Praman Patra” (Permanent Residence Certificate). The students will be entitled only for 1 scholarship at a time (either through Uttarakhand Board Toppers or through the Uttarakhand Resident category). The scholarship will be as per the merit scholarship policy of the University in subsequent years. The amount of scholarship is 25% of the tuition fee waiver for Boys and 35% for Girls students in their first year.

Special Scholarship on the basis of Board Merit and JEE Toppers

MBA Scholarship: UPES MBA Scholarships are given based on marks obtained in CAT. The students who have secured 85% of marks are eligible for the below-mentioned scholarships:

Academic Scholarship: UPES offers up to 100% merit scholarship, 50% scholarship is reserved for girls students. The scholarship will be offered to students who have applied for admission to UPES Courses and have taken UPES entrance tests. However, the scholarship shall be awarded to only those students who have completed the below mentioned scholarship criteria for the first semester and subsequent renewal, if applicable. The criteria for the same is as follows:

• Scholarship Criteria: Academic Scholarship will be awarded to upto 10% of Top performers of the UPES Entrance Exam. UPES reserves the right to conduct multiple rounds of entrance examination and the merit list of each round will be prepared separately. However, it is UPES’s sole discretion, to decide to consider next in line of the top 10 for said Scholarship, in case the top performer does not accept the scholarship for any reason. The total number of scholarships available is up to 1900 out of this 50% will be reserved for girls i.e., 950 scholarships and the balance is for the general category including boys and girls both.
• Scholarship Benefit: Scholarships will be awarded in the range of 20% to 100% on tuition fees for 1st semester only. The renewal of scholarships for the rest of the semesters is at the sole discretion of UPES Dehradun.

Concession for Bonafide Uttarakhand Students: If the students are Uttarakhand Bonafide residents, they are eligible for 33% concession on tuition fee subject to fulfilment of the following conditions and submission of supporting documents:

• ‘Sthai Niwas Praman Patra’ Certificate, along with the admission form
• Income Certificate (proving that your gross family income is not more than INR 12 lakh per annum, along with a copy of the last income tax return filed).

Freeships: The main objective of freeships is to access quality education to all. UPES is providing scholarships to students who come from the economically weaker section but with high aspiration, commitment and caliber. The eligibility criteria for the same is:

• Total number of 50 seats only for the regular program be on the merit basis.
• Upper age limit for UG and PG programs: 20 and 25 years respectively (on the date of registration).
• The minimum academic eligibility for the respective program at the time of admission should be met, as mentioned in the admission prospectus.
• EWS certificate to be submitted which is issued by District Magistrate (DM) /Additional District Magistrate (ADM) / Collector/ Deputy Commissioner/ Additional Deputy Commissioner/ First Class Stipendiary/ Magistrate/ Sub-Divisional Magistrate / Executive Magistrate/ Taluka Magistrate/ Extra Assistant Commissioner.
• As per JEE notification EWS category income is to be upto INR 8 LPA.
• Renewal of free ships will be based on 6.0 SGPA / CGPA in the last exam passed

Sports Scholarships: UPES has introduced a new scheme of providing scholarships for talented sports person. This scholarship started with the aim to develop a sports culture in the university. The criteria for new and existing students is tabulated below:

Scholarships Based On Academic Performance – For Second Year Onwards: The academic scholarship policy is applicable for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The scholarship will be awarded to 10% of the total students enrolled in each of the programs or 1 student whichever is higher. The 10% will be rounded off to the nearest next number. The scholarship policy for the year 2022 is based on the meritorious performance of the students in the academic year 2022-23 as under:

Alumni Scholarship: The scholarship is applicable on only 35% tuition fee waiver for the full duration of the program. Under this scheme, no other scholarship will be offered or clubbed with this scholarship. No alumni fee will be charged and the renewal of the scholarship for the subsequent year will be only based on attaining a minimum of 8 SGPA /CGPA with no backlog and no disciplinary cases registered or reported against the student. The eligibility for this scholarship is:

• Applicable to all Alumni who graduated from 2017 onwards. For any Alumni who graduated before 2017, the department of alumni relations will present the case to the scholarship committee for special approval.
• Alumni have to meet the notified eligibility criteria for AY 2022-23 for the respective programs.

Digital Innovation Scholarships (Sponsored by Meta) – School of Modern Media (SOMM): The students who have applied for admission for UPES SOMM undergraduate courses whose family income meets the eligibility criteria and have qualified through the selection process are eligible for this scholarship. The criteria for the same is tabulated below:

Under the AICTE Act and its subsequent regulations, universities established under a State or Central Act in accordance with Section 2(f) and 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, do not require AICTE approval. However, the universities are only required to maintain AICTE norms and standards and require no prior approval from AICTE for starting technical and professional courses.

This has also been clarified by the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s judgment in the case of Bharathidasan University v/s AICTE wherein the Court had ruled that:

“it is not mandatory for a University, created under an Act, to seek & secure prior approval of the AICTE to start a department for imparting a course or program in technical education or a technical institution as an adjunct to the University itself to conduct technical courses of its choice & selection. The Bench also said that the definition of technical institution excludes from its purview a university, and when by definition a university is excluded from a technical institution, to interpret that such a clause or such an expression, wherever the expression technical institution occurs, will include a university will be reading into the Act what is not provided therein”

UPES is sponsored by Hydrocarbons Education & Research Society (HERS) which is registered under the “Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860” (Registration No. S-41894 of 2002). HERS is a not-for-profit society promoted by a group of prominent professionals from the industry.

UPES was created under an Act of Uttarakhand State Legislature notified vide Government of Uttarakhand Notification No. 830/Higher Education/2003-3(18)/2003 dated September 1, 2003. However, the Governor of Uttarakhand is ‘Visitor’ of the University, and the Principal Secretary, Higher Education, Government of Uttarakhand, is ‘Representative’ of the state government on various Boards of the university.

UPES is a self-funded university and does not receive any grant or financial assistance from the Uttarakhand State Government. The university is also not entitled to receive any financial assistance or grants from UGC or any other source funded by the Government of India.

Highest CTC increased from 28 LPA in 2021 to 50 LPA in 2022. The Placement percentage has been more than 90% for the last 5 years and the growth has been consistent. Till May 2023, the highest and average package offered to the School of Computer Science students was INR 36 LPA and INR 8.66 LPA, respectively. Further, the highest and average package offered to MBA students stood at INR 27.83 LPA and INR 8.12 LPA, respectively. Yes, placements are done through campus recruitment. The recruiting companies for campus placements follow their standard selection procedures.

It is mandatory for each incoming student to be equipped with a tablet or laptop, conforming to the minimum specifications outlined below.

b) The device should have legal operating system (OS) software pre-installed as specified below. Proof of ownership of the OS should be with the student and producible on demand throughout the duration of the enrolled program or while the student is present on campus – whichever is earlier. Additionally, the same should be submitted by the student at the time of registration. c) The device should be capable of connecting to an external display device through a normal VGA port for the purposes of showing presentations, etc. d) The device should be capable of connecting to a wi-fi network and doing Windows Active Directory domain authentication of the user. e) The device should have capabilities of entering proxy server settings for the browser. f) The device should have an external keyboard and be able to connect to a remote server using the RDP protocol. g) The device manufacturer should have at least one authorised service centre or availability of requisite hardware service and support in Dehradun. The student is advised to confirm this before buying to avoid loss of study hours in the event of device malfunction. h) A student will be responsible for taking care of his/her machine including raising tickets for warranty/AMC support; adequate insurance coverage; and be responsible for its upkeep and maintenance as well as ensuring legal compliance of the system in line with OEM/ISV licensing policies throughout the duration of the program. If there is loss/damage to the device, it will be the responsibility of the student to ensure timely rectification through the authorised service centre in Dehradun. Additionally, relevant paperwork for filing an insurance claim will be the responsibility of the student.

Notes: a) A charge of ₹ 5,000 (Rupees five thousand only) will be payable towards provisioning of appropriate software, internet access charges and IT application support services to the student. b) The university will install a managed antivirus on each laptop/device (as applicable) entering the university network. This is for optimizing bandwidth used during virus definition updates and to ensure the device does not become a security threat affecting other users on the network. This installation is mandatory and the device will not be allowed onto the network without this. c) The university maintains appropriate access control systems that will prevent a student machine from connecting to the university network should the machine not be following acceptable policies. Specifically, the machine should have a legal, appropriately-patched operating system, and a legal antivirus updated with the latest definitions and patches. d) The device should be used in conformance with the acceptable IT use policy of the university. e) Microsoft Windows Home Basic/Premium editions will not be acceptable as these do not support connecting to a Windows Domain. The minimum level of operating system should be Windows Professional. f) While the university will take all reasonable steps to ensure adequate application and OS support for the device, the university will not be liable for any loss of academic hours due to hardware malfunctioning / improper functioning due to incorrect specification of the device.

Applicants should have an overall minimum 50% marks at Higher and Senior Secondary levels (Class X and XII). UPES will conduct the UPES Law Studies Aptitude Test (UL-SAT). One can also apply on the basis of CLAT Score / LSAT Percentile or Board Merit.

For B.Des the Portfolio requirements during interview are given below:

• Bring your hand drawn sketches / rendering using simple pencils, colour markers / pencils or any other media such as charcoal, natural dyes, etc. These could be of any everyday object, nature, symbolic or experimental ones.
• Photography: You can showcase your photography skills and present pictures / images clicked by you. You could also present any experimentation on digital media – drawing, sketching, and rendering, using digital media, tools and techniques (2 dimensional, 3 dimensional).
• Bring any physical model / prototype, i.e., something made out of clay, wood, cardboard, etc.
• Apart from the above, you can also bring in creative work done by you.
• Certificates of participation in competitions / any special mention.

For M.Des, the Portfolio requirements during interview are given below:

• Drawing, sketching and rendering by hand using a variety of techniques and media, including colour markers and colour pencils (10-15 pages)
• Creative expression – both 2D & 3D

• Understanding of material – material behaviour, characteristics

Residential blocks have been earmarked for limited on-campus accommodation (on a first-come-first-serve basis) separately for boys and girls on a triple-sharing basis. Apart from this, there are several private hostels and paying guest accommodations available for students in the vicinity of the campus. UPES does not have any direct or indirect tie-up whatsoever with the private hostels and does not undertake any responsibility in this regard. Parents are advised to verify the data independently before finalising any arrangement with the concerned hostel and sign a written contract with the hostel owners. Parents are also advised against making advance payments without verifying the facilities. They should insist on a written agreement with the hostel owner, which should clearly state the payment modalities.

UPES has two campuses in Dehradun.
