Year 4 of PGA Tour University is upon us.

On Wednesday, the PGA Tour unveiled the first PGA Tour University ranking for the Class of 2024, and topping the initial list is Stanford senior Michael Thorbjornsen. He is followed by recent Open low amateur Christo Lamprecht of Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt’s William Moll, who decided to return for a fifth year. North Florida’s Nick Gabrelcik and Oklahoma’s Ben Lorenz round out he current top five.

Players are ranked using a similar formula to that of the World Amateur Golf Ranking, though only counting college events, official PGA Tour events and select DP World Tour events played during a player’s junior and season seasons. The top 20 players following the 2024 NCAA Championship in San Diego will earn some sort of status under the PGA Tour umbrella. The perks break down as such:

• No. 1 – full PGA Tour membership for remainder of 2024 season and 2025 season, plus full Korn Ferry Tour membership for the remainder of the 2024 season

• Nos. 2-5 – full Korn Ferry Tour membership for the remainder of the 2024 season, plus unlimited sponsor exemptions on the PGA Tour for the rest of the 2024 season and the entirety of the 2025 season. Also, exempt into final stage of 2024 PGA Tour Q-School.

• Nos. 6-10 – conditional Korn Ferry Tour membership, plus full status on PGA Tour Americas for the remainder of 2024 and then through the Latin swing portion of the 2025 season. Also, exempt into second stage of 2024 PGA Tour Q-School.

• Nos. 11-20 – full status on PGA Tour Americas for the remainder of 2024 and then conditional status through the Latin swing portion of the 2025 season. Also, exempt into second stage of 2024 PGA Tour Q-School.

Here is a look at the top 20 to begin the 2023-24 NCAA season:

  • 1. Michael Thorbjornsen, Stanford
  • 2. Christo Lamprecht, Georgia Tech
  • 3. William Moll, Vanderbilt
  • 4. Nicholas Gabrelcik, North Florida
  • 5. Ben Lorenz, Oklahoma
  • 6. Maxwell Moldovan, Ohio State
  • 7. Austin Greaser, North Carolina

Pga tour unveils the pga tour university, a new ranking system for college golfers.

pga tour u rankings

The PGA Tour has added a path to membership to the Korn Ferry Tour and its international tours in Canada, Latin American and China.

PGA Tour University will launch in 2021, with a ranking system of college players that will result in status on those developmental tours.

RANKINGS: The GCAA Coaches Poll

The PGA Tour will partner with the World Amateur Golf Ranking to compile the college rankings. In addition to college events, any PGA Tour or major championship appearance players earn by sponsor invitations, Monday qualifiers or through amateur events (such as getting into the Masters as a finalist in the U.S. Amateur) will count.

The first college ranking will be released later this summer.

"With the level of immediate success from the top collegiate players in the last decade, our team has done extensive research over time and developed a plan to provide a pathway for those players as they begin their journeys into the professional ranks," said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan in a statement. "By focusing our efforts on players who have completed a minimum of four years, PGA TOUR University will not deter from the college game while ensuring its graduates benefit from their maturity and experience."

NEW RULES: DI golf committees announce adjusted course access policy for 2021 and 2022 championships

There is a catch: Players have to complete four years of college competition. But those who turn pro early often get enough PGA Tour sponsor invitations to have a good chance at gaining status on the big Tour.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for these players to begin their professional careers on a path to the PGA Tour," Korn Ferry Tour president Alex Baldwin said in another statement. "Just as importantly, we are able to continue building on the great momentum the Korn Ferry Tour and our International Tours have enjoyed in recent years by strengthening the field of competition with the addition of these collegiate stars."

Top amateur Luke Clanton continues PGA Tour card chase at fall opener in Napa

Luke Clanton’s chase for a PGA Tour card will continue next week in Napa, California.

The rising Florida State junior will miss the Seminoles’ fall opener as a result.

Clanton, the world’s top-ranked amateur who has dazzled this summer in professional tournaments, is among the sponsor exemptions for the Procore Championship, the first event of the Tour’s fall series, which begins a week from Thursday at Silverado Resort. The Folds of Honor Collegiate, which kicks off Florida State’s season, is scheduled for Monday-Wednesday.

Since making his Tour debut at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, where he tied for 41st and nearly captured low-amateur honors, Clanton has competed in five PGA Tour events in the past couple months, posting three top-10s and missing just one cut. He tied for second at the John Deere Classic and most recently finished solo fifth at the Wyndham Championship.

That stellar summer has launched Clanton up the standings in PGA Tour University’s Accelerated program, which awards Tour cards to college underclassmen who achieve a certain number of elite benchmarks. Clanton has earned 14 of the 20 points required to satisfy Accelerated, meaning if he earns six more points before the end of next spring’s NCAA Championship, he can accept Tour membership beginning next summer.

Among the avenues that Clanton can take to 20 points: making a Tour cut (1), finishing top 10 in a Tour event (1), winning the NCAA individual title (3), capturing an individual player of the year award (3 apiece for Haskins, Hogan, Nicklaus).

Of course, Clanton could also do what Nick Dunlap did last spring and win a Tour event as an amateur. Dunlap turned pro just days after his American Express victory and has since added a second Tour win, this summer at the Barracuda Championship.

As for Florida State, the Seminoles are used to fall absences. They didn’t field their best lineup until the spring last year, letting players either compete in events outside of college golf or rest. It worked out, as Florida State finished as the national runner-up to Auburn at La Costa last May. With Clanton out, sophomore Carson Brewer will start alongside four players who qualified for the U.S. Amateur this summer – Gray Albright, Tyler Weaver, Jack Bigham and Michael Mays.

The Seminoles begin the season ranked No. 2 in Golf Channel's preseason rankings.

Clanton is joined in the Napa field by fellow sponsor invites Neal Shipley, who edged him for low amateur at Pinehurst, and Wenyi Ding, who left Arizona State this summer after just one semester and is set to received a full DP World Tour card next month via the Global Amateur Pathway rankings.

Golf stars to battle in PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf primetime match

Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will face Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau in a made-for-TV match.

Golf fans will finally get their first PGA Tour vs. LIV showdown.

As first reported by Golfweek and confirmed by GOLF.com, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and World No. 3 Rory McIlroy will team up as PGA Tour loyalists to face reigning U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau and five-time major champ Brooks Koepka of LIV Golf in a made-for-TV match in Las Vegas later this year.

The match will air on TNT, which broadcasted the previous nine editions of “The Match,” an exhibition series that started in 2018 with a matchup of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and most recently saw McIlroy take on Max Homa, Rose Zhang and Lexi Thompson this past February.

Per Golfweek, the match will be produced by Bryan Zuriff’s BZ Entertainment, the developer of “The Match” series and EverWonder, although GOLF has learned the matchup will not be aired under “The Match” branding.

McIlroy and the agents of the other participants confirmed the event to Golfweek .

“I’m thrilled to partner with Scottie in what promises to be an exciting duel against Bryson and Brooks in Vegas this December,” McIlroy said via text message. “This isn’t just a contest between some of golf’s major champions; it’s an event designed to energize the fans. We’re all here to put on a great show and contribute to a goodwill event that brings the best together again.”

Jay Monahan speaks to the media at the Travelers Championship.

What’s the latest on the PGA Tour-PIF talks? Here’s what Jay Monahan said

It’s the first time since LIV Golf’s launch in 2022 that players from both the PGA Tour and the breakaway rival league will face off against each other in an exhibition match. The matchup comes as the PGA Tour faces increasing pressure to finalize a framework agreement of a merger with LIV Golf’s parent, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, which was initially struck in June 2023.

Since LIV’s launch, the league’s players have been barred from PGA Tour-hosted competitions and thus have only competed against the top players on the PGA Tour in major championships and select events around the world. LIV players are also running out of exemptions to said majors as the league does not award Official World Golf Ranking points, the primary qualifier for major championships.

Koepka and DeChambeau are the only two players to win major championships since joining the league. The two major winners also had an intense social media-fueled rivalry in 2021 that even saw them face off against each other in “The Match V” on Black Friday of that year. Since the duo joined LIV Golf, the feud has essentially disappeared.

McIlroy has played in two editions of The Match and a number of other made-for-TV exhibitions. Scheffler is making his debut into exhibition golf and is coming off a banner season in which he won the Olympic gold medal and seven times on the PGA Tour, including the Masters and the Tour Championship, where he took home the $25 million first-place bonus for the FedEx Cup.

Billy Horschel already knows one player who won’t be getting a Presidents Cup Captain’s Pick: Billy Horschel

On Tuesday, Jim Furyk will reveal his captain’s picks for the 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club. Both PGA Tour pros and average joes await word on the final roster additions, but Billy Horschel, despite some strong play to end the season, is not among them. Why? Because Billy Horschel already knows that Billy Horschel has not been picked for the team.

RELATED: Billy Horschel takes Florida fandom—and trolling—to another level with practice-round outfit

On Tuesday's edition of Fairways of Life, Horschel let the cat out the bag, revealing that he got the call from Furyk on Monday informing him he wouldn’t be part of the U.S. team in Quebec later this month. For most, a phone call like that might ruin their Labor Day cookout, but Horschel, with his typical candor, seemed to take it in stride.

“Jim’s a great friend, he’s been an unbelievable role model for me,” Horschel told host Matt Adams. “I didn’t expect to make this team. I knew I was way down the list. I know I made a little push at the end. Listen, it hurts because Jim’s a good friend … I wanted to make this Presidents Cup team because he is the captain, but it’s not in the cards for me this year. I’ll play really hard next year and hopefully be part of the Ryder Cup and Keegan’s team next year.”

Furyk will announce his full selection of Presidents Cup captain’s picks live on Golf Channel between 1-3 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 3rd.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — School’s out for the seniors. Next stop: professional golf.

The second class of PGA Tour University graduates was finalized following the completion of stroke play at the 2022 NCAA Div. I Men’s Golf Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club, with the top 15 players in the standings earning status on varying professional tours.

The top-five players in the PGA Tour University standings receive Korn Ferry Tour membership and will be exempt into all open, full-field events beginning with the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD SYNNEX (June 9-12). The players are also exempt into the final stage of the Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament.

The following players who finished 6-15 in the standings receive PGA Tour Canada status beginning with the ATB Classic presented by Volvo Edmonton (June 16-19) through the end of the regular season. The players are also exempt into the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament.

The program is designed to streamline the process for college players to advance to the professional level while also rewarding those who honor their college commitments. Players must play on the NCAA Division I level and complete a minimum of four years in college to be eligible for PGA Tour University.

Korn Ferry Tour

Frederik Kjettrup clinches Korn Ferry Tour card by making PGA TOUR Americas history

Tour Insider

Finished No. 8 on PGA TOUR University Ranking, then won three times this summer

Change Text Size

Frederik Kjettrup didn’t really know what to expect this summer on PGA TOUR Americas. It’s a professional circuit, of course. It was his first go-around after completing a successful collegiate career at Florida State and finishing eighth on the PGA TOUR University Ranking to earn status. The unknown made it hard to fully grasp the level of play, how deep the fields would go, and how to navigate the mental preparedness that comes with a big-time career change.

“I just wanted to go play well and see where that put me,” he said, “and obviously that’s turned out pretty good.”

For all the introspective queries about how this season could have turned out for the 24-year-old from Aabybro, Denmark (the English pronunciation is ah-bye-bro) the 2024 season in North America has gone well. Extremely well, in fact.

Kjettrup has won three times – his first two starts, along with the season’s penultimate event, last week’s CRMC Championship presented by Gertens, to notch the circuit’s first-ever Three-Victory Promotion. Six players had won twice in a season since 2020, when the Three-Victory Promotion was installed as a reward, but none had managed to tilt a trio of trophies.

Kjettrup earned immediate Korn Ferry Tour membership with his third win and will be fully exempt on the Korn Ferry Tour through 2025 (he isn’t eligible for the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, which uses the Korn Ferry Tour Points List to determine eligibility). Kjettrup, who finished runner-up at the NCAA Individual Men’s Golf Championship earlier this year, won three PGA TOUR Americas trophies in just 10 weeks.

“It feels really good. Words can’t really describe it,” Kjettrup said after his third win Sunday. “A step in the right direction and a step up the ladder. I’m really excited.”

This week marks the PGA TOUR Americas season finale, the limited-field Fortinet Cup Championship at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley’s North Course (the host club of the 2025 RBC Canadian Open). Despite his three wins, Kjettrup will head into the final event of the year ranked second in the season-long Fortinet Cup standings by about 200 points behind American John Keefer. Keefer has been a model of consistency this season, with eight top-10 finishes in nine tournaments. He has one win with four runner-up results. Canada’s Matthew Anderson rounds out the top three in the standings, just 400 points behind Keefer’s lead.

For Kjettrup, his main end-of-season goal has already been achieved as he’s off to the Korn Ferry Tour in 2025. He doesn’t have to stress, per se, about this week’s finale. But he’s still as motivated as ever to end the season the way he started – in the winner’s circle.

“You show up at a golf tournament and you try to win it,” he said.

Kjettrup’s summer success, he said, can be attributed to his putting. After a springtime visit from his coach, he was able to get that more consistent. Pair that with some great ball-striking and he was compiling the tournament-winning scores. But while his game was trending very much in the right direction, he was still working through the big change between college golf and professional golf.

The physical strain on going back-to-back so frequently – without a return to his home base, like with amateur or college golf – was a lot.

“On Tour, you’re playing four weeks in a row and … you just keep going. That’s a big change. You’re just trying to find balance,” Kjettrup said.

Mentally, too, the professional pivot was a lot. In college there’s a tough schedule to work through with classes and homework, working out, and having practice every day – with travel sprinkled in for events. On Tour, there is more time to rest between rounds. But he’s found a routine that works.

“To rest, mentally, is more important than physically. They go hand-in-hand sometimes, but I’ve found it’s (tougher) mentally than physical,” Kjettrup said. “If your mind starts to feel tired, your body feels tired. It might be in your head that’s doing it.”

While Kjettrup’s map is firmly pointed towards the 2025 Korn Ferry Tour, the final destination was very much earned after a celebrated career across the Atlantic as an up-and-coming golf star. He had been to the United States a few times before college on vacation but admitted he didn’t know much about college golf. One thing he did know was, at that point, he wasn’t ready to turn professional yet.

“I figured there was an opportunity to go that way and improve my game and play elite golf courses and in big tournaments,” Kjettrup said. “It was a stepping ladder for me.”

Kjettrup visited a couple of schools – he had just one rule, he wanted to be able to play golf year-round – and as he would be coming from Denmark, going to school on the east coast of the U.S. was almost a given. Florida State stood out for a few reasons.

“The program, facility, the tournaments they played, the alumni that came out … if you wanted to be an elite-level golfer, you could do that at Florida State,” Kjettrup said.

After earning full status for PGA TOUR Americas this summer via PGA TOUR University, Kjettrup said he spoke with his team about an approach to his schedule. With limited Korn Ferry Tour starts on the horizon, they firmed up a strategy to play for that status for next year. If he ended up in half the events he hoped for on Korn Ferry Tour and half on PGA TOUR Americas, then he’d only have played a quarter of a season – which, zooming out, seemed silly. It was “hard to do too much,” he thought.

So, he went out and won the first event of his PGA TOUR Americas career. And the next one. And again, last week. Mission accomplished. Kjettrup has played well and is off to the Korn Ferry Tour for 2025 – things have turned out pretty good indeed.
