Visiting Mahmya Island, Egypt – A Complete Guide

M ahmya Island is a true hidden gem off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt. It’s a peaceful place with crystal clear blue water and is truly quite the paradise. A day trip to Mahmya Island is a great way to escape the bustling big cities of Egypt. We spent 2.5 weeks in Egypt and honestly, the day we visited Mahmya was one of our favorites! You really wouldn’t expect such an incredible paradise in Egypt.

In this comprehensive guide, I will share everything you need to know about the stunning Mahmya Island – covering topics such as how to get there, transportation options, pricing details, and the serene Mahmya Island beach club.

What is Mahmya Island?

Mahmya Island is a private beach located on Giftun Island. It’s nestled amidst unspoiled crystal clear waters (with so many shades of blue) and a super soft white sand beach. The beach club offers delicious cuisine, cocktails, incredible views, and a relaxing atmosphere. If you’re wondering what to do in Hurghada, a day trip to Mahmya is an exotic getaway that will redefine your concept of a perfect day in the Red Sea. It is sure to top your list of best beaches in Egypt. It’s definitely at the top of ours!

Giftun Island public beach and Paradise Island are also great options, if you can’t make it to Mahmya. But I would recommend Mahmya Island over the other 2 options any day!

How to Get to Mahmya Island

There are a few different ways to get to Mahmya Island, but all of them are by boat. We chose to book the Day Use Program (more on that in the next section) through the Mahmya website. You can also opt to take a speedboat or a private boat/day tour. These can also be booked through their website.

• Day schedule: departs at 8:30 am and returns at 4 pm
• Sunset schedule * we recommend this one *: departs at 10 am and returns at sunset, with the most beautiful views you’ve ever seen!

Other options for booking would be through a private tour company or GetYourGuide/Viator/etc.

Travel tip: Make sure to keep your camera out during the boat trip to and from Mahmya. We saw dolphins during our sunset trip back to Hurghada!

How much does it cost to visit mahmya island.

If you’re booking through the Mahmya website, prices are as follows:

• Cost: 30 euros/adult & 15 euros/child
• Cost: 50 euros/adult & 25 euros/child
• Cost: 75 euros/adult & 37.50 euros/child

Note : When we visited Mahmya Island, we chose to buy the day use program, but we wished that we would’ve splurged and went with the full program. The snorkeling around these crystal clear waters is INCREDIBLE and we know that visiting the Sabina Reef would have made the day more magical.

• Speedboat: This would be good if you have a bigger budget and want to get to the island very quickly, as it only takes 20 minutes. The boats can fit 6 people and it costs 44 euros/person.
• Private boat tour: This a more luxurious option, as it costs 600 euros for the day (including 10 people on the boat).
• If you’re interested in a sailing experience, you can reserve that through GetYourGuide, etc.

Food + drink options.

Aside from what’s included in the programs listed above, Mahmya Island also has an à la carte menu, which is what we opted for during our visit. This choice allowed us to dine at our beach lounge area throughout the day and even enjoy a bottle of wine.

The à la carte menu offers Mediterranean selections with an Egyptian twist. Some menu options include salads, pizzas, pasta, chicken, sandwiches, seafood, delectable desserts, and a few kid-friendly choices as well.

There’s also a bar, situated just up from the beach area, for those who want to drink beer, wine, or cocktails. During our amazing day on Mahmya Island, we were able to order a bottle of wine delivered right to our lounge area.

We came prepared with our own masks and snorkels, and we spent the day indulging in lots of snorkeling, relaxing, and eating delicious food. For those who want more action, Mahmya Island provides a plethora of other activities to enjoy, including beach volleyball, a fun water slide, and a trampoline! There are also paid activities available, such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), banana boat rides, and more. We would love to go kayaking next time we visit!

Hawaii ’s largest island – Hawai'i the Big Island  – is grand in size and scale. Filled with superlative scenery — the world’s most active volcano (Kilauea), some of its newest land (in Puna), the largest mountain when measured from the seafloor (Mauna Loa), and some of the planet’s best night sky star viewing (atop Mauna Kea) — there’s a lot more than just tropical beaches to wow visitors here… though, of course, there are those, too. 

This largely rural island in the central Pacific has been inhabited for millennia by proud and self-sufficient communities sustained by land and sea. That ethos — the island takes care of us, so we take care of the island — still thrums through residents’ daily lives. For the visitor that translates to an expectation that you will also treat the land and its people with respect. Dig in by sampling the island’s literal fruits ( including globally recognized Kona coffee ) at abundant farmers markets and farm-to-table restaurants island-wide, frolicking with offshore wildlife including massive mantas at night, volunteering to restore native habitats, and immersing yourself in Hawaiian legends and lore at some of the oldest and most sacred sites in all of Hawaii.

Here's what every first time visitor to Hawai'i needs to know.

When should I visit Hawai'i Island?

Buffered by surrounding deep seawater, and at a latitude the affords nearly equal parts night and day year-round, the Big Island enjoys relatively little temperature fluctuation throughout the year. At sea level, most days are between 75 and 85ºF, and nights from 65 to 75ºF. However, because of its varied volcanic topography — from sea level to nearly 3 miles up — it’s possible to experience multiple types of weather within the same day at different locales across the island. The eastern or windward side is usually wetter than the dryer western or leeward side. And higher elevation areas are typically cooler, often with afternoon rains. The highest elevation areas can be downright chilly… during storms it’s not unusual to experience snow atop the highest peaks… even in summer.

Though summer (May to November) brings the Pacific hurricane season with the potential for weather curveballs, winter storms are more likely to cancel scheduled boat charters, which is unfortunate because that’s also when migrating humpback whales from Alaska visit to frolic, mate and give birth in the islands’ warm offshore waters. 

The island experiences high seasons during North American school holidays: spring (February to April), fall (mid-November) and winter breaks (December and January) and fall break are the priciest times to visit. Budget travelers will benefit from discounted hotel and rental car bookings in the shoulder season (September and October), and well as the low season during the North American summer (June to August). Popular festivals – including the Merrie Monarch hula competition , which brings dancers and vendors from across the islands to Hilo in mid-April, King Kamehameha Day celebrations in North Kohala, and the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival in November – are all worthwhile events to plan a trip around.

How much time should I spend on Hawai'i?

Most visitors to the island by cruise ship will spend a day in both Hilo and Kailua-Kona , but that’s far too short to get a sense of what the island has to offer. You’ll need at least four to five days to hit the highlights including Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park , Kona coffee country , northwestern beaches and scenic drives to sites including the southerly Punalu’u Black Sand Beach and Kohala Mountain Road between the northerly towns of Hawi and Waimea. A week or more will afford a deeper dive to lesser-visited areas like the Hamakua Coast and the quaint town of Honaka’a as well as exploration in the more remote reaches of Puna, home to the islands most recently created lava lands.

Is it easy to get to and around Hawai'i Island?

Two airports — one on each side of the island in Hilo and Kona — are the main entry points for visitors. Though both are technically international airports many flights from the US mainland and international destinations route through Honolulu first. 

A rental car is a must due to the island’s large size and the fact that the limited public bus primarily services residential areas… unless you plan to book a series of tours where someone else will be doing the driving for you. Waikoloa, the northeastern coastal region home to the bulk of the islands’ resorts, does have shuttles between properties and area shopping centers, but not to and from the airport (Kona International, 25 miles away) or into the town of Kailua-Kona a few miles even further south. Visitors based in either downtown Kona or Hilo will find both places walkable, but neither town is draw enough for most visitors to spend their entire visit there; you’ll still need that rental car to get from Hilo to Volcano or from Kona to coffee country.

Top things to do on Hawai'i Island

A trip to Hawaii Island would not be complete without a visit to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park . Spanning two volcanoes including the world’s most active ( Kilauea ), it’s often possible to see red hot lava roiling within a summit crater lake if an eruption is present. (Check the national park’s website for current eruption notices and activity as well as the best viewing spots). Most visitors walk the trail from the visitors center to the boardwalk through the steaming Sulfur Banks, meander through the remnants of an old lava tube, and some traverse a longer loop trail along the crater rim. But there are three very worthwhile add-ons if you have the time. 

First is a drive down Chain of Craters Road. This 19-mile down and back driving tour includes stops at pit craters, the site of former lava fountains, and the chance to see the state bird, nene. You’ll descend some 4000ft of elevation taking in sweeping vistas to where the lava cliffs meet the sea. 

Second, in a pull-off near the bottom of Chain of Craters Rd, is a mile-long hike through an old lava field the Pu’u Loa Petroglyphs , a collection of sacred and mysterious native Hawaiian rock carvings, some over 800 years old.

And, finally, back at elevation, a hike into Kilauea Iki Crater through fern forest and jungle (2–3 hours, 4 miles) is well worth the trip. Not only does it give you a closer look at the terrain and some of the landscape’s more unusual features, it’s also easy to visualize what it would have been like when this crater was filled with a boiling lava lake just 65 years ago – some parts still vent steam.

Other island highlights include the 442-ft cascade of Akaka Falls into verdant Hamakua Coast jungle ( Honamu Goat Dairy on the same road offers free "therapy" with the kids and is well worth the stop); spotting sea turtles basking on the black sands of southerly Punalu’u Beach while eating a fresh malasada (fried, sugar-coated Portuguese-style donut) from the United States’ southernmost bakery; and exploring the upcountry paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) vibe in Waimea before traversing the sky-high, ethereal and foggy ranchlands along Kohala Mountain Road to the quaint former plantation town of Hawi.

My favorite thing to do in Hawai'i Island

Hawaii is a world-class destination for marine life viewing and whether you’re a novice snorkeler, experienced diver, fearless adventure seeker, or prefer the dry vantage of a boat, there’s an experience for you off the island’s west side. Numerous dive shops offer what has become a bucket list experience for many visitors: snorkeling (or scuba diving) at night with 10ft-plus manta rays. Lights attract plankton, mantas’ food, and draw in mantas that feast using graceful loops through the water column to filter-feed the tiny creatures within inches of gleeful viewers.

Experienced divers also can head offshore on scuba trips that focus on the plankton themselves. So-called blackwater diving takes the bold one-to-two miles offshore after dark to where the seafloor plummets some 5000ft below. There, they watch migrating zooplankton — and the cast of otherworldly predators (think strange jellyfish and colorful squid) that follow them up from the deep — in the first 50ft below the surface. Thalassophobics (those fearful of deep water) would do well to keep to the mantas that hover above the reef.

Daytime charters can be just as fun. Though the previously popular practice of swimming with resident spinner dolphins is now considered illegal (they sleep during the day and keeping them awake makes them more vulnerable to predators), it’s still possible to spot them and other large marine animals (including endangered resident monk seals, migrating humpback whales, pods of pilot whales and even the occasional whale shark) on dedicated boat charters. Some of these operate zippy former military watercraft that can speed to the first sign of a sighting and put snorkelers within underwater viewing distance of porpoises and — with a trained in-water guide — sharks.

How much money do I need for Hawai'i Island?

There’s no question: Hawai'i is an expensive tourist destination. In addition to the typically high cost of getting here, the island economy — where most materials and goods still have to be imported — also commands higher prices for hotels, tours and dining out. Still, this isn’t the big city (read: Honolulu), and bargains and cost-saving measures can still be found if you know where to look. A tip, though: don’t skimp on experiences if you’re taking a tour — you really do get what you pay for.

There are a total of nine Fortnite Summer Road Trip quests, which will be unlocking daily between July 23 and 31, and these will feature alternating assignments between earning XP in Creator Made Islands and earning XP in a team across the various Battle Royale modes, Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, or Fortnite Festival. You can see a full list of these challenges below:

• Day 2 of 9 - Earn XP with a party in Battle Royale, Reload, Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, or Fortnite Festival (60,000)

• Day 4 of 9 - Earn XP with a party in Battle Royale, Reload, Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, or Fortnite Festival (60,000)
• Day 5 of 9 - Earn XP in Creator Made Islands (60,000)
• Day 6 of 9 - Earn XP with a party in Battle Royale, Reload, Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, or Fortnite Festival (60,000)
• Day 7 of 9 - Earn XP in Creator Made Islands (60,000)
• Day 8 of 9 - Earn XP with a party in Battle Royale, Reload, Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, or Fortnite Festival (60,000)

All of these Fortnite Summer Road Trip quests involve earning XP in specific modes, and the easiest way to do that is by completing other Fortnite quests you have available or receiving Fortnite Accolades for your actions during a match. While you can take on the Creator Made Islands tasks on your own, you'll need to be in a party for the others to count, so make sure you join at least one friend or matchmake into a group so your progress registers. You need to tick off all nine of these assignments to unlock the Fortnite Cybertruck, but you have until August 6 so there's no immediate need to rush!

What are Creator Made Islands in Fortnite?

You can find Creator Made Islands in Fortnite by scrolling down on the main Play lobby screen – any of the options you see that don't have the Epic Games badge at the top left of their icon are Creator Made Islands. There's even a 'Great for Summer Road Trip' section currently, to easily help you find experiences to earn XP in for these challenges. To check you've selected the right sort of level, you can switch to the Quests tab in the lobby and confirm any of the Earn XP in Creator Made Islands you have available are not greyed out. You should also track that quest and make sure the level you're playing is actually awarding XP, as some are much more generous than others.

You risk a flight-ning storm if you book a trip on a summer’s night.

Amid peak travel season, taking an evening flight might seem like a great way to avoid crowds and arrive at your destination with the entire next day up your sleeve.

But experts are advising against booking summer night flights, saying they’re the most prone to delays due to inclement weather.

One weatherman recently discovered the fact the hard way, sharing his saga in a TikTok video that has amassed more than 266,000 views.

“I broke the one rule you should never break,” meteorologist Chris Bianchi lamented to viewers in the viral video. “Never book a flight in the afternoon, or especially at night, during the summertime months in the United States.”

Bianchi, who works for 9News Denver, had reportedly booked a flight from New York City to Denver, Colorado on the evening of Jun. 26, only to end up getting stranded at La Guardia Airport overnight waiting for a plane that was delayed for hours due to a thunderstorm.

However, the weatherman says he only has himself to blame.

“I’m a meteorologist, I should know better,” Bianchi said in the footage, which he shot at the airport during the delay. “Chances of there being a thunderstorm somewhere in the United States in the afternoon or the evening are pretty high during the summertime months, during May, June, July, August, September.”

He added:”If you get a thunderstorm in the wrong place and it impacts your flight, you could be completely screwed.”

Why do summer afternoons and evenings create such a “perfect storm” for bad weather? Because the warm temperatures allow the atmosphere to harbor more humidity, which is a prerequisite for building the cumulonimbus clouds that produce thunder and lightning, according to National Geographic.

Thunderstorms are more likely in the evenings than the mornings because it takes a while for the energy to build into a storm, Science Alert reports.

Unfortunately, storms don’t necessarily have to occur at the point of departure or arrival for travelers to experience delays.

“If there’s a thunderstorm in Chicago and you’re flying from New York to Miami, that flight that you’re taking from New York to Miami might be coming from Chicago,” explained Bianchi. “So you should not book a flight during the summertime months [in the evening] because there’s a pretty good chance you’ll have a delay as a result of a backlog of those flights clogging up.”

Many crew members seconded the meteorologist’s advice in the comment section.

“As a former flight attendant I always tell people to wake up and take the first flight out always,” said one. “Weather mechanicals get worse in the afternoon and flight delays cause a domino effect.”

“That rule is 100% correct,” said another. “Coming from an ex-flight attendant. If my schedule had a late flight I knew I was in for hell.”

In order to avert a weather-induced delay, Bianchi advises flyers to download the apps FlightAware and Flightradar24 to track inbound flights.

He also suggested booking a refundable backup flight in case there are storm clouds on the horizon at the flight’s departure point or destination.

Vanilla came in No. 1 on delivery service Instacart's analysis of orders from June to August 2023. During that time, 29% of Instacart orders included vanilla ice cream, the company says. That result parallels the findings by online research firm YouGov's 2022 survey of favorite ice cream flavors , which found vanilla as the most-liked, in general, and the favorite flavor by the most survey respondents.

In both reports, chocolate came in No. 2, while cookies and cream took third place in Instacart orders, but mint chocolate chip was No. 3 in YouGov's survey.

Vanilla is great on its own , but it can be combined with syrups, fruit and other ingredients to make milk shakes, smoothies and sundaes. Speaking of which, is it a coincidence President Reagan declared National Ice Cream Day would be celebrated on the third Sunday of July – get it, sundae? He also declared July as National Ice Cream Month.

Travel | an island in the sun: peanut island has snorkeling, pristine beaches and overnight options.

“On an island in the sun, We’ll be playing and having fun

And it makes me feel so fine I can’t control my brain”

That essentially sums up the experience of visiting Peanut Island , a nearly 80-acre haven for boaters, paddlers and beach enthusiasts who like to spend their days soaking up sunrays or visiting with marine life on a snorkeling excursion. For many area boaters, the island tucked just inside the Lake Worth (Palm Beach) Inlet presents a place to pull up for an afternoon beach cookout and swim.

This small slice of paradise also allows the option to stay overnight in one of 17 reservable sites, allowing campers to enjoy the island long after daytime revelers have pulled up anchor and headed back to shore.

Getting There

The only access to Peanut Island is by boat on the Intracoastal Waterway. Those with access to a pontoon, a fishing boat or personal watercraft will have no problem pulling up for a few hours or a night of camping. Kayakers and paddlers are also commonly seen around the island, and launching and rentals are available at nearby Riviera Beach Marina .

This is also where visitors can catch the Peanut Island Shuttle Boat , which departs at regular intervals daily for $25 per adult and $12 per child (online advance reservations). Dogs are allowed on the shuttle boat free of charge and permitted on the island as long as they are leashed.

The Palm Beach Water Taxi ($20 per person) makes multiple daily trips from the Sailfish Marina Resort on the eastern side of Peanut Island.

For those with their own vessels, launching at Phil Foster Park just to the north of Peanut Island is also an option — but parking may be limited on the weekends.

Paddling or boating around Peanut Island is inherent in the experience, and there are plenty of places to pull up on a sandy stretch of shoreline.

The island’s main draw is swimming, with a dedicated snorkeling lagoon and guarded beaches on the southeast side. The best time to snorkel is during the hour before and after high tide.

Get Wet Watersports , which offers snorkeling tours to Peanut Island, advertises that visitors will see plenty of colorful fish, rays and the occasional manatee or shark.

Fishing is also available to anglers at various points on the island, including a fishing pier near the campground.

A 1.25-mile walking trail takes visitors on a scenic stroll around the island. Plenty of picnic tables, pavilions, charcoal grills and a few chickee huts are spread out for daytime visitors to enjoy.

An Island Overnight

On a sunny weekend, especially during the summer, the island and surrounding waterways can get quite congested and loud, with revelers on boats blasting music and partying. But as the sun goes down and the riff-raff retire for the evening, all daytime visitors must leave the island, and only those who have reserved one of 17 campsites can stay.

Fourteen of those sites are single sites ($30 plus tax) meant for one tent and a maximum of six campers, while three are double-wide ($60 plus tax) for up to two tents and 12 guests. Each spot contains a tent pad, charcoal grill and picnic table.

Individual sites don’t have campfire rings, but there is a communal firepit and wood available for purchase on the island.

Although alcohol isn’t allowed for daytime visitors, it is permitted in the campground for overnight guests. Showers are available in the restrooms, exclusive to campers and only accessible by punching in a code.

As the moon rises, it’s nice to enjoy dinner and a beverage outdoors while taking in the sensations of wind whispering through the palms, crickets chirping and stars emerging overhead.

Peanut Island also makes for an interesting vantage point to watch cruise ships and giant cargo vessels pull out to sea under the setting sun, not to mention plenty of larger-than-life yachts.

A Nearly Nutty History

Originally named Inlet Island, the man-made enclave originally encompassed 10 acres created in 1918 with material excavated while dredging the Lake Worth (Palm Beach) Inlet. By 1923, the Port of Palm Beach was using the island as a spoil site, and eventually, the island grew to 80 acres.

The name came from a plan to ship peanut oil from the island, and while that idea was abandoned in 1946, the name Peanut Island always stuck.

Amid the Cuban missile crisis of the 1960s, a nuclear bunker was built on the island for President John F. Kennedy, who vacationed with his family at his “winter White House” in Palm Beach. The bunker was previously open for tours but closed in 2017. Historic buildings that previously served as a Coast Guard station sit near the site of the Kennedy bunker.

Brighter Days Ahead

While these facilities are currently fenced off and off-limits to visitors, Palm Beach County plans to renovate the historic structures, bunker and docks in a yearslong, multi-million dollar improvement project.

According to a sign placed in front of the site, the boat house will serve as home to exhibits and a gift shop while the Coast Guard station will house educational and historic displays. Eventually, the plan is also to reopen the Kennedy bunker for tours.

Peanut Island is located in the Intracoastal Waterway near the Lake Worth Inlet in Riviera Beach and is open for day use from sunrise to sunset. There is nothing for sale or rent on the island, so visitors should be prepared with supplies for a half-day away from the mainland.
