Sun Dolphin Journey 10 ss review: budget fishing kayak?

by John Spear | April 22, 2019

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 ss Review

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 ss is basically a 10-feet long sit-on-top fishing kayak which is great for rivers, lakes, and excluded fishing spots. This kayak is easy to maneuver, paddle and offers great stability. It comes with two flush-mount rod holders and one swivel holder which is a cool feature to have.

Moreover, the cockpit area of Journey 10 is very spacious for a 10-feet kayak. In addition, it is very easy to get in. What I really admire about this kayak is that it has a large, comfortable seating area. The comfort is further enhanced by an adjustable padded seat. However, it does not end here, there are protective thigh pads.

There are multiple storage compartments and shock cord deck riggings to carry crates and other stuff like that. Nowadays, the storage compartment is also referred to as a portable accessory carrier. This is because it is a dry cabinet and you can keep your wallet, cell phones, and other electronics in it.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 ss Review

Just like other kayaks, Sun Dolphin 10 ss has its own advantages and drawbacks. Since it is a low-budget kayak, there are some features that have been compromised. However, there are some features which have been improved. In this section, I will discuss these features and will let you know how these compromised and improved features turned out.

Sun Dolphin 10ss offers good stability in both ideal and non-conditions. I have tested it in both rough and calm water and so far it has been good. The reason behind it can be its smaller size. The small size of it provides great control and stability but at the same time, it limits you. There is no way you can stand on this kayak to cast your lines. It would definitely flip if you try standing on it.

The seat of Sun Dolphin 10ss is not as comfortable as other kayaks. There is just a single back pad that offers good back support but there is nothing at the bottom. You have to sit on the plastic body of a kayak which is very uncomfortable. However, a cushion can be used at the button to make it a little bit comfortable.

The protective thigh pads are also too far away and even the people of average height can’t reach them. This basically renders them useless unless you are a taller person.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 ss Storage

One of the features to love about Sun Dolphin 10ss is that it provides an ample amount of storage. Firstly, there is a dry cabinet at the rear of the boat which is airtight. You can fill it with water to make it a live container or with ice to keep your catch fresh.

In addition, over this compartment, there is a bungee network where you can put the crates containing your fishing gear. There is also a bungee network at the front, but you can’t really use it because there is too little space there. However, you can tie some of your gear with the bungee.

There is another little compartment right in front of the seat which is not 100% airtight. Basically, I have used it to keep my worms during fishing. In addition, there is a cup holder and two other small storage compartments. These are at the walls of the kayak where you can put your wallet and cell phone.

The tracking system is the worst thing about this kayak. These systems are installed to track the kayak back into a straight line. The tracking system in this kayak doesn’t do the job well in this kayak. Even at slow speed, it doesn’t keep the kayak in line and when the water is rough or the weather is windy it gets even worse. Overall, the boat just keeps haphazardly.

There are three-rod holders on this kayak. Two of them are flush mount rod holders and the third one is a swivel rod holder. Basically, the flush mount rod holders are pretty deep and you can put your rods in without being skeptical.

However, the other rod holder is not actually a swivel. It gets stuck and you will have to move it manually in the direction you want. This might be good for some people but not for others.

Sun dolphin 10ss is a lightweight kayak but not a speedy one. Even in the calm waters, it doesn’t provide fast speed. However, speed is still enough for fishing and recreational trips. I would say it glides pretty smoothly over the water. If racing with other kayaks is not your thing you would be satisfied with its speed.

The actual size of this kayak is not 10 feet it is 6 inches less. It means it provides great maneuverability. Basically, you don’t even need a rudder system to maneuver it. Just simple paddling can turn the kayak into the direction you want to go.

In addition, the shorter size also enables it to take sharp turns. It also helps to move around the rocks present in lakes. That makes you able to go into excluded fishing spots where it is difficult to take longer kayaks.

The self-bailing system is installed in kayaks to drain the water that enters the kayak. The problem with this system in Sundolphin 10 ss is that the holes are too small. It is a disappointment that a standard-sized scupper won’t fit in and you would have to modify the scuppers. The modified scuppers are not as effective as actual ones.

Moreover, the screws are also not properly tight and the gaps between them provide a way to water to climb up in the boat. You might have to visit your local sports shop to find the plugs that fit in. If you still cannot find it, you can add earplugs. They will swell up and fit the holes. However, you might have to change them frequently.

Transportation of this kayak is very easy because of its size and weight. It doesn’t require a special trolley and not even a truck with a spacious back. It can easily fit in the back of an SUV car. Moreover, the retractable handles provide all the help you need to load and unload it from the car.

As it is a low-budget kayak it doesn’t come with any accessories. It is understandable that a paddle doesn’t come with it but the least they should provide is the scuppers.

I even had to purchase a scupper separately from the market. The problem is there are not any scuppers available that can fit in the holes so you have to modify them and they do not work well.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 ss

The weight capacity of this kayak is 250 pounds which is good. Thus, it can carry almost all of your fishing gear on board. In addition, if you catch a huge fish you won’t have a problem carrying it on board as well.

This kayak doesn’t have any complex feature so the people who are just getting started can enjoy the kayak without requiring any basic training.

However, for the pros it is not good, the seat, tracking system, and speed is not up to the mark for experienced kayakers.

The material used in this boat is rugged UV-Stabilized Fortiflex High-density polyethylene. This is a strong material and can withstand the abuses water has to offer. In essence, this is the best material that can be used at price like this.

This material is pretty good and with the proper care, it can last several years. This makes the boat very durable provided that proper care is taken.

This kayak is a low-budget kayak and it is the best thing about it. You can easily purchase this kayak without even saving money. Despite being a low-budget kayak, it does provide some nice features which is why I would recommend this kayak if you are running a little short on money or occasional kayakers or beginners.

When I first received Journey 10 ss, the first thing I wanted to change was the seat. This kayak does not come with a comfortable seat. So, I went ahead and ordered a stadium seat. You would just need to screw it into the wall on the backside and you are good to go.

One of the not-so-good features of this kayak is its stability. If you are not satisfied with the stability, you can go ahead and add outriggers to it. These outriggers by Inspired by Nature are affordable and do the work.

As said earlier, this kayak has three-rod holders which may not be good enough for an experienced angler. You can add a couple of additional rod holders. I have them on my Vibe Sea Ghost and they do the job.

This kayak is for the people who are just getting started and do not want to spend a lot of money on a kayak. As it comes at a much lower price than typical kayaks, there are some features that are compromised because of its price.

journey 10 ss

However, despite being a low-budget kayak it offers some great features which include storage, stability, and maneuverability. These features are better than some of the expensive kayaks and to be honest, this is what one really needs when he/she is just getting started.

Overall, it is a good kayak that comes at an affordable price and has everything that a beginner needs in a kayak.

We purchased this kayak to replace and 8' Lifetime kayak that we had owned for 3 years. When examining it in the store we were impressed with the storage, adjustable footrests and the padded knee rests. Easily holds all the needed fishing gear.

My husband took it out first, and was not impressed with it at all. So, I decided I needed to take it out and give it a spin. After having the Lifetime, this one did not measure up, at all. First, when I sat on top of the kayak, I thought it was going to tip me into the water. Not good. Still determined, I took the paddle and went off with the rest of the group. I had a hard time keeping up as the kayak just would not track straight. Very uncomfortable with the stability. I knew right away, being in my 60's, that this was not the kayak for me. I finished out the day trip, then went home and sold it.

If I could give it negative…

If I could give it negative 5 stars I would. This is the worst tracking and by FAR THE LEAST STABLE yak I've ever been in and I won't even get into scupper and storage issues. Do yourself a favor and pay up for quality, you won't regret it.

I use this Kayak on a reservoir to fish for hours. Pretty stable and easy to paddle. I mounted three rod holders and 2 side mounted handles for convenience, (1 in the front and 2 in the rear). I made a small wheel cart to transport from car to water & return using old lawn mower wheels and a frame to a tub chair. I bungee cord the cart to the rear while I fish so I don't have to bring back and forth from the car. Rear compartment is adequate size for storing medical supplies and safety gear. I stuffed extra foam padding anywhere I could to maximize float-ability.

After 2 years of reading…

After 2 years of reading reviews and looking around for a good deal, I finally decided to pull the trigger. TSC had a great deal on this yak. $229+tax. It came with a paddle, removable rod holder, seat cusions, and the big storage compartment. I'm a newbie still, but this thing goes straight if you paddle deliberately. If you aren't paying attention, you can make it veer off course easily, which I would think is true of most kayaks. Imo, most negatives about tracking and tipping are user error. It was a little shaky at first, but once I found my center, I had no issues. 6' 187lbs. The adjustable foot rests are great. It took a few adjustments to get it where I wanted them. The seat back is adjustable as well. I can't say that I'd want to hook into a big fish on it, but I guess that would depend on your ability to stay balanced. Overall, from a rookie, a good kayak.

It is amazing and it is easy…

It is amazing and it is easy to mount a fish finder on and a good way to start a kid on. Im 15 and I use it all the time to fish local bass fishing tournaments in Arkansas.

I give this a 3 because it…

I give this a 3 because it is in the middle of the rating scheme. I got a Journey 10 SS for Christmas and have not actually had a chance to use it yet. That being said, Mine came with real nice scupper plugs and dual skegs, unlike what I have been reading about. My only complaint so far is length. It is advertised as a 10 ft kayak. Mine measures exactly 9 feet.

I bought this model kayak 2…

I bought this model kayak 2 years ago after I got my husband into kayaking and couldn't get him out of my Ascend. First 5 minutes on the water, I thought I'd hate it. But I had to get used to its difference in stability and tracking. Once I did, it was fine. I've used it a LOT! Great for the price! Haven't ever tipped. Have taken my dog out for rides in it, too. Couldn't find plugs to correctly fit the scupper holes, so I got a rubber seat cushion for about $6 that keeps my rear dry and also provides a little comfort.

Plug the scupper holes and…

Plug the scupper holes and you won't get wet. Put a skeg on it and it'll track like an arrow. A set of home made outriggers will make it stable enough to stand up and fish.

Rookie here, I read reviews…

Rookie here, I read reviews on this kayak before I bought it. I was on the fence. I had to find out for myself. I wanted to have fun, this kayak is unstable doesn't track very well. If you spend a little time in it you learn to control it and doesn't feel as tipsy. I made it work for me, but it took the fun out of the experience. It was too much work to have fun and I really never felt relaxed. I liked all the features it had. I never did feel confident enough to reach behind me. As far as getting wet, not a problem with that. I went in knowing that you get wet in a kayak. This is a lightweight easy to load and unload kayak . If you don't mind working for your fun this is the kayak for you. I know that it is a $300 kayak and one shouldn't expect perfection. There are better kayaks out there for $300. Pelican, Future Beach. Remember that they are $300 but not as much work for your fun.

I am very pleased with this…

I am very pleased with this kayak. For it's price point it's a great value. I've read a lot about tracking issues but have not experienced any my self. My kayak is new purchased 8/2019. My hull has 2 skegs as part of the mold, a padded seat bottom and only 2 scupper hols near the seat. It also included scupper plugs & I've never had a wet butt. When I look up this model online it shows 6 scuppers, no seat pad and everyone complains about finding the plugs??? Has Sundolphin updated this model? The paddle is not very good, but at least you get something included where as most other fishing kayaks include nothing. The storage is great and so far mine has proven to 100% dry but I'm not banking on that. If you're on the fence, go for it. It's an inexpensive way to get off shore. For what it's worth, I am 6'1" and weigh 200lbs.

We purchased three of these…

We purchased three of these Journey 10 SS sit-on 10' kayaks from Tractor Supply. We took them straight to the lake. Within 10 minutes my seat had an inch of water in it and I was soaked. My husband and son (who do weigh a little less) were only slightly wet in the seat area. My advice to you - if you will be using these in calm water - plug the scupper holes! I went to Field & Stream and bought a Pelican Trailblazer 100 NXT sit-in 10' kayak. I stayed perfectly dry! It doesnt have all of the fancy compartments or rod holders but I love my Pelican.

This has been fun and…

This has been fun and frustrating at the same time. Although tippy at first, i realized it had everything to do with my confidence on the water in a new kayak. Track was not perfect but ot is a10 footer. I found super plus at big five. I modified them with a pair of scissor s cutting off the second plug. Fit its now snug.. like a glove. I got mine for a great price and i don't worry about breaking on rocks, gravel or sand. Drilling and doing modification is not scary. It isn't an expensive water craft. Get over and get out there...live

So far, I love my new…

So far, I love my new baby!!! Took a little getting used to just cause I'm used to borrowing a "sit in" kayak. This is a sit on. But i can definitly fish from it. Now i just gotta name & chrissan her;)

Bought this kayak hoping to…

Bought this kayak hoping to get a decent angling sit on top kayak for a reasonable price. Well, I have bad news for you, these cheaper sit on top kayaks just aren't worth fooling with. This particular model, the Journey 10, is the tippiest boat I've ever been in. If you come anywhere near the capacity limit just forget it. My wife, who weighs 140 pounds less than the weight limit had tipping issues with it too, so I know it's not just my size. Not to mention this thing does the aquatic equivalent of a 360 donut once you stop paddling (terrible tracking). Lesson learned, if you want a decent sit on top, you're just gonna have to shuck out the extra dough. Don't waste your time with this thing. The fact it was selling at Walmart should've been a red flag.

Great kayak for bass fishing…

Great kayak for bass fishing in lakes and rivers. Holds all of my gear and then some. Only negative is that it does not track the best.

It's been an awesome kayak.…

It's been an awesome kayak. Great for beginners. Have been fishing on it a lot. Never tipped it, reeled in 39" carp on it. Doesn't track the greatest, and has no live well in the vessel. Needs a better paddle than what is provided. 4stars mainoy because of how the scupper holes are designed. It's very hard to find plugs that will fit if you like to plug the scuppers, they aren't completely cleared of plastic, so you have about a 3/4" hole then down about an inch and the hole shrinks to about 1/4 inch.

The journey 10 SS is…

The journey 10 SS is incredibly fun to use. It is super light weight, and very easy to transport. It does a fantastic job on the water and is very comfortable. It has a lot of storage area and will suit all your needs. I would recommend and do recommend this kayak for everyone.

Bought it a week ago, have…

Bought it a week ago, have been on it every day since. Clarion river, French Creek, pymatuming, Conneaut lake, and a few swamps and large ponds. Works slendidly, it's a 10 ft kayak with no skeg, no outriggers and..... It's 10ft. It's only gonna be so stable. If you can't handle it buy a sit in ya googan. Anchor trolley, skeg, good paddle, not the crap some retailers include with them. Take out the back storage and let it float behind you with a piece of 550 holding it on to the ring your seat is attached to. I'm going to attach my deck cleat on the right side so I can tie my anchor off, us let some 550 and deck eyes to make a trolley. Excellent kayak, super customizable, or good the way it is.

Ive owned this kayak for 2…

Ive owned this kayak for 2 years now. I think all the negative talk from other reviews is unfair. Remember its a 10 ft kayak under $300. It doesnt track great, but when you only have a 10 ft kayak, only the more expensive ones really do. Its not made for standing, if you want to stand get a 12 or 14 foot yak. But to sit in, its more than stable enough. In two years ive probably been out 150+ times, never flipped or even came close to getting wet. I couldnt find the right scuppers for these holes, though i didnt look all that hard for them. I found some wine corks that fit perfect. I have never taken them out, they stay in all the time and my butt has never gotten wet. And i dont have a seat or any type of cushion. As long as your not an idiot splashing water all over yourself, you should have no problem staying dry. Its easy to modify and not a big deal to drill holes for accessories or whatever you want to do, as i imagine it would be scary with a $1000+ kayak for most people. People just always have to complain about something. Bottom line is, if youre a beginner, or even a veteran on a budget, or youre not sure if kayaking is for you, its a cheap way to try it out. Its more than suitable to fish with. Use it for a few years, then step up to something better if you find it lacking. I got mine from wal-mart and their return policy is excellent, should you have an issue with it. Basically you cant expect perfection from it, but if you have realistic expectations of how a $300 kayak should perform, then youre good. Btw I weigh about 225 and i carry a small anchor and a lot of gear, so if its stable for me it should be for most people. If youve never kayaked before it does feel a little tippy at first, but within an hour or so youll learn how to balance and move on it, and that sensation goes away very quickly. Give it a chance.

This is a great little…

This is a great little kayak. Been using it on rivers and lakes with zero problems. Can access front and rear storage areas with ease. Sondolphin has scupper plugs that don't leak. Use those under the seat for a dry bottom and regular plugs up front for easy removal. I added a anchor trolley system and fishfinder. First thing I did was removed every screw and seal and added silicone. Has never got any water in the hull or storage areas. Stability is fine. Have run it sideways up on logs and stumps and it has yet to flip.

I picked up one on sale for…

I picked up one on sale for $229. I consider myself an experienced paddler that has paddled both canoes and kayaks for over 25 yrs, so keep that in mind. I started out launching the Journey on a small river and paddled a half mile against the current with the wind in my face. For a 10 ft sit on top, it passed that test with no problems. When I turned around and paddled with the current I was smiling ear to ear. I was able to go super fast, stop and hold the kayak still and spin around at will. She went exactly where I wanted her to, all the while being extremely stable. I had no problems with tracking at all. Sure, my feet and butt were a little bit wet but that's to be expected when paddling. I haven't used it to fish yet so I can't comment on those features but the swivel rod holder is in a good spot and I like the fact that the rear storage compartment is easily removable. Great kayak for the money.

This is my second year with…

This is my second year with my Sundolphin Journey 10 SS. It took a bit of getting use to but I love every butt soaking minute on the water.

Perfect kayak and great price.

First, i would like to say that all kayaks smaller than 14 feet track weird and I say this because I got used to my brothers 14 ft kayak and then purchased a 10ft kayak. The 10ft kayak I got was lifetime angler it tracked differently than a 14ft kayak and once I figured it out I fell in love with it. I now have 10ft kayaks for my whole family plus I just got a Journey 10 ss that you ride on top of for free on a pallet I got from a wholesaler for 250 bucks. I have tested it out on the water and found no issues with it tracking left it goes where I want it to. the drain plugs don't let me get wet by allowing water in the kayak I, of course, don't excede the weight limits or even come close to it which may be the reason some of the reviewers are getting soaked. The tipping issue is a personal thing because I can freely move around on this with no concerns of tipping over. the dry storage it good for exactly that license and cell phones along with food and has easy access.

Great kayak

Great kayak! I've only had I a few months but I haven't had any problems. I've turned it completely on its side and it righted itself without flipping me in the water. It does great in the river or lake. You can take motor boat wakes straight on or from the side without any issues. At first I had the problem of it pulling left with me then I read about how to control that by foot pressure. I'm still learning that technique but I'm doing much better. For the people that complain about getting wet...don't you intend to get wet when you get in the water? That's one the main reasons I go to the lake or river--cool off on a hot summer day. Seriously, after owning this kayak for a few months and just now reading some of these reviews, I must say I think some of these people writing reviews didn't know what to expect from a kayak. It's a great kayak! We've had tons of fun and plan to do more before winter hits. I do agree that the back compartment is hard to open and close but seals tight if it is closed correctly. That is the only negative to this kayak.

Bought kayak at Walmart in Burlington iowa.

Kayak did not have plugs. Manager said it didn't need the. That there is a certain amount of water supposed to be in bottom of boat. Ha. I laughed at them. They said it was a self bailer. So now if have to find plugs. Going to bass pro shop.

If you make a few changes this is a great kayak

When I first bought this kayak I was very disappointed. I use the dry well behind the seat to hold drinks while on the water and primarily fish while on the kayak. The problem I found was you instantly tip once you attempt to turn around and get into the dry well. I ended up buying some pvc and designed my own outrigger for under $30 and was done in less than an hour. It looks corny as hell but I can do whatever I want in it now...turn around, fish, or even stand up while casting. It now has incredible stability and is practically impossible to flip. I recommend to everyone who enjoys fishing without wanting to tip over to do the same. If your not willing to however this may not be the kayak for you when it comes to fishing...to tippy all by itself

It Floats......but thats about it

The price is right, it floats, but thats where it ends.

First of all, this thing does not track well at all. It keeps veering to the left. Pretty unstable too. Lastly, the self bailing scuppers are terrible. I went out over the weekend and my cheeks were soaking wet within the first noine minutes. Good luck finding scupper plugs that fit this thing.

Word of advice. If you are thinking about buying this kayak because of the price, save your money and hit em' with the hein with something better.

Good for beginer or float friendly waters

I bought two of these for my 14 and 11 year sons for $200 each from Home Depot, yes Home Depot. I will admit right off the slow speed tracking sucks but they handle like a go cart on the water. The youngest turns his on a dime and negotiates obstacles with ease on flat water, we have not tried any harder currents yet. I wish I would have bought a Journey 12 for the older boy, but he can live with this for a while since he is not as into it as me and youngest. We have built a skeg or sorts for his which made the boat go straight as an arrow but made it hard to turn, we are still working on a final design.

I am 47, 6'1" and 250lbs, I found the boats to be wobbly but they have great secondary stability and you have to work to flip. None of the dry storage is exactly watertight but with some silicone and thought about what you put in them they are pretty good. They are great platforms for modifications like anchor trolleys, LEDS and other accessories.

Overview of the SunDolphin Journey 10 SS Fishing Kayak

Well, it’s the 19th of February and it’s going to be 70 degrees today, so I figured I’d take the new Sun Dolphin Journey kayak out. Test it out and see how well it does. My other kayaks are sit-in kayaks, this is my first sit on top, so going to see how it does. Haven’t had it out yet.

Several kind of cool features to this one. This one, of course, has the dry box container in here, which you can open up here. The cool thing about this one is, this actually comes out and you could do as a pull behind, behind the kayak and it floats, so you can tie it off.

Then it opens that whole compartment there. You have the two fish holders. You notice the holes for drainage. This one has a little dry compartment here, which is kind of cool. It does state, though, it’s not completely dry. So what I’ll probably do is take these screws out and I’ll put some kind of marine sealant around there to make it completely dry.

Drink holder, you have a rod holder here, which I have a attachment in the back. That will fit in there and you can hold your rods. Another water bottle containment. You have your foot rest here, which you can move. Have your drain plug here. So pretty cool. This here, you have storage here.

So we’re going to take it out and see.

Okay, so I took the Journey 10 SS kayak out for about three hours. My overall impression of it is really good. I really, really liked it. I researched this thing online, it did get some pretty bad reviews, it also got some really good reviews. So I wasn’t really sure what to think about it.

The stability of it was really, really good. I did like the openness of it. Where my sitting kayaks, I was kind of limited on my movements inside the kayak. But the stability was awesome, I really liked how sturdy it was. I didn’t think it would glide through the water as well as my other kayaks, because they kind of have a V bottom, V bottom to them, this is more flat. But it tread in the water really, really good. It did want to steer a little bit to the left when I was in the water, but it wasn’t hard to handle at all.

The rod holders, here in the front, was really nice, I really liked it. This compartment here, I told you it was … They said that it’s not waterproof, you can tell. It’s almost like a live well. There’s so much water in it. The thing about this one, though, is my butt got extremely wet. You can see all the water.

It is the middle of February, it’s about 65 degrees. Even though it was pretty nice today, it did get a little chili. So I think I’m going to get some of those scupper plugs, I think that’s what they call them. You can get … you can plug up these holes. In the summer time, it wouldn’t be bad. It would actually keep pretty cool. But I think I’m going to get some of those plugs. Especially for the spring.

With the stability, it was a little bit more stable, so it was easier to get to my packs back here, which was kind of nice. What else about it?

I did like the storage compartments here on the side. It was really nice. So like I said, overall, I thought it was a … It’s really a great kayak for the price of it. I would highly recommend it. Like I said, I got this kayak on sale , I had some coupons. I got it at Walmart.

For a beginning kayaker, I would probably give this thing 8 out of 10. Like I said, I really, really like it.

All right. What we have here is the SunDolphin Journey SS . This is a 10-foot Sit-On top kayak . I purchased this one at Walmart. I’m just going to go over a few features with it here, and then we’ll post another video about the modifications I’m going to make to it to kind of customize it.

First off, we’ll start off up here in the front. You have a carry handle. That’s what this is. Drain plug in the front. Some bungee tie-downs for storage. A good place for sticking a life jacket. As you can see, you got adjustable foot pegs on each side. Here in the middle you got a water bottle holder, a swivel mount rod holder that comes with it.

Another little compartment right here for just putting whatever you want, maybe a drink. Who knows? You can carry two of them if you want. You got padded knee grips on the side. Pretty thick and heavy rubberized stuff for putting gear behind. It doesn’t come out real easy. There’s one of those on each side.

Here in the middle you have a storage container. Right now I just have some regular stuff in there, but that’ll be one of the mods we make is waterproofing it because no matter what they tell you, this is not 100% watertight. Adjustable straps on the seat back. You got scupper holes in it. It’s self-bailing kayak. We got some scupper plugs to put in there.

Each side has a holder. I got mine for a amazing deal. I got it for $225 at Walmart ( Check price on Amazon here ) because it’s missing the one bungee cord, which I can cut the ends off of an actual bungee cord, run it through those holes and fix it for about 25 cents, so I wasn’t going to pass that deal up.

You have two, one right there, one right there, built-in rod holders. Another storage thing back here. More bungee straps holding it down. This one, take and put the lid back on it and get it out of the way here. Tighten it down. If you want, this one actually comes out and can be used as a tow-behind. Now this one is completely enclosed. It is watertight. The only thing you might do is actually watertight that lid opening. It has a carry handle. Just goes behind it like such.

You’ve got to forgive the camera work, but you can run that handle through there and use it as a tow-behind to carry whatever gear and then you got another big storage area right there.

And then, of course, there’s another drain plug here in the back. You’ve got a lot of options. You can put stuff in here, use those bungee straps to hold it down. All in all, you’ve got three rod holders, two closed storage compartments, knee pads. I’ll show you over here. It did come with this paddle. It just holds it right onto the side there. No big deal. And like I said, we’re going to do some modifications to it. Nothing major, just very minor, just to kind of personalize it. Stickers, of course, and we’ll post that in another video.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS Review

When you are fishing from a kayak, the only thing you want is comfort and stability so you can remain patient without having to worry about going overboard or drifting away from your catch. Fishing in a kayak could be the next step in your journey as an angler

When you are trying to get to the hard to reach fishing spots you need a stable kayak you can rely on, not only is your chances of a bit affected, but also your safety.

sun dolphin journey 10 ss mods

Finding the right kayak for your specific fishing situation can be confusing and complicated, sometimes you need a little help so that you can survey this market for the product that suits you.

That product could just be the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 ss, a fishing kayak that helps you reach uncharted waters and territory with ease. We have reviewed this product so that you can get back on the water in no time.

If you are a numbers man, the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 ss is 10 feet in length, 30 inches in width and 44 pounds in weight when empty and unmanned and a height of 15.75 inches. The capacity of this fishing kayak is around 250lbs when full. The structure is based on a rigid hard shell.

The solo seating configuration is a ‘sit on top’ design or what is referred to as an open cockpit, and is designed for an adult of any skill level to man the kayak.

Made from extremely durable dent-resistant high density polyethylene, this kayak is a rugged vehicle that will last many fishing adventures.

The polyethylene is reinforced with Sun Dolphin’s patented Fortiflex formula which not only allows the material to flex, halting any pesky dents that could turn into holes, but also protects your boat from warping as a result of UV damage. This is a particularly useful feature when leaving your kayak in the sun.

The Features

It can be hard to deck out a kayak with features as the whole point of kayak design is simplicity, efficiency, and optimal engineering. But the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 has some cool features that will make your fishing life easier.

There are one swivel, and two flush, mount rod holders so that you can have multiple rods on the go to increase your chances of a catch. This also means, due to the swivel technology, that you can man one rod manually with a guarantee that the other rods will stay put.

The recessed tackle holders are made so you can reach your tackle easily and without stirring the water, although if you aren’t fishing these tackle holders are also useful storage compartments for whatever you fancy.

The most unique and saleable feature of the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS is the swivelable rod holder, this is what sets it apart from other fishing kayaks on the market as it makes fishing easy.

This is a particularly helpful tool for the older anglers among us who maybe don’t have the forearm or joint strength to hold the rod for a long time while still maintaining a good centre of balance

A uniquely removable portable accessory carrier, or what most anglers refer to as a dry compartment, is located in the back tip of the kayak. The cool thing about this feature, on the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 ss, is that it is removable or detachable.

This means that, if you require more space, you can actually float the dry compartment and tie it to your boat so that you can fill the now empty hole with other items, while still having a dry compartment that floats behind you.

Customers said that they have used this as an extra seat when simply taking the boat out on shallow water. This would also be perfect for a floating beer cooler on those summer days.

Some customers have reported that the turning cork which allows entry into the dry compartment can be quite tight to get off initially, and that trying to reach the dry compartment from the seat can make the boat unstable.

The boat also has a non-waterproof dry compartment, many customers report that this isn’t waterproof at all and fills up like a well, but it certainly has some useful storage and uses for the handy angler.

What we love about the storage in this kayak is that everything is really close to reach and doesn’t require any risky maneuvers to access.

Comfort is key when you are fishing, this is because you are going to be sat for a long time, or hopefully a short time, but you don’t want to cause any damage to your body in the long run.

The Journey 10 solves this by providing a padded, but still light, seat and thigh pads. Not only this, but also adjustable foot braces which mean that anyone of any height can still enjoy the Sun Dolphin Journey 10.

Comfort is also really important when fishing as you don’t want to stir the water and lose any potential catches by fidgeting around.

In addition, having comfort in your yak allows you to be patient for longer when you aren’t bothered by little niggles and itches. You want to feel like you are weightless on the water so the fish don’t know what hit ‘em.

Although Sun Dolphin do attempt to increase comfortability as much as they can with this kayak, the lack of a proper seat and back support means that this kayak isn’t suited for extended trips and long expeditions, rather this should be used for a quiet afternoon fishing on the water.

Moreover, the sit-on style seat won’t protect you from cold and windy climates, nor from water that laps over the side – this is worth keeping in mind for trips of that nature.

For many, one of the most reassuring features is the self-bailing engineering which means that the boat drains itself without the use of pumps which must be manually emptied, the boat actually drains itself with the use of gravity.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10 ss also comes equipped with all the usual features one might need when fishing such as shock cord deck rigging to hold in place anything you need to hand, ditty trays, paddle holder, and beverage holder so that you can easily access your water bottle without tipping the yak.

Although the seat is not raised off the floor so be prepared for a few wet bums while you are out on the water, luckily the wide seating area lets you move around and get comfortable while fishing.

Although, the width and depth of the kayak does make bracing for impact a little tricky and can result in some sore legs.

Luckily, the kayak isn’t built for long journeys on choppy water so this shouldn’t be a problem and if it is then you might need to look for a different kayak for that specific purpose.

What’s Portability Like?

Weighing only 44 pounds this is a pretty lightweight and mobile kayak which should be easy to transport for most anglers.

As this is a pretty portable vessel, it’s a great choice for the lone angler who braves the waters on their own, as only one person is needed to carry it. The retractable carrying handles really help with portability too.

Moreover, the short length of the kayak means that it would easily fit in the bed of most pickup trucks with the tailgate down. This is definitely one kayak to keep an eye out for if you want a particularly portable yak for fishing.

How Stable Is This Yak?

This kayak is designed for lakes and slow moving rivers, specifically for fishing on such a river or lake.

As a result Sun Dolphin have opted for a wide and short kayak that offers more stability than the long and narrow yaks that are more suited to faster moving water.

The Journey 10 SS should be able to handle most moderate currents but use a bit of common sense when deciding where to float your boat.

For what Sun Dolphin gains from engineering the boat for stability, they certainly lose out on speed, so don’t think the Journey 10 SS will win you any races.

Some customers do report that the boat tends to veer to the left when steering.

This can be down to user error as other customers suggest this is easily combated with proper handling technique. Moreover, the boat isn’t made for long voyages anyway, so stability is the focus with steering only a secondary priority.

The Upgrade

While the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 ss has been discontinued, it is still available to purchase second hand from a fellow angler or on other second hand selling websites.

It’s discontinuation is merely a result of creating a newer model of the Journey series. The Journey 10 ss is still a great fishing kayak that stands up against other models and kayaks.

You might be wondering what the next upgrade is then, this is the Journey 12 ss. The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 ss attempts to solve a few issues with the Journey 10 which I have outlined already.

One particular upgrade is the seating arrangement. The Journey 12 ss comes with a nice padded seat area that protects your back and your bottom.

This allows you extra comfort which is desirable when fishing, and also means that you can have potentially longer journeys as this seating will prevent back problems as well as a sore butt.

Funnily enough, if you do prefer the boating experience of the Journey 10, but also have a Journey 12, you could simply take the seat out of the Journey 12 and put it in the 10. Although we don’t suggest buying the Journey 12 purely for a seat.

In terms of specifications, the Journey 12 is a little longer at 12 inches and heavier at 48lbs, this does make it a little less maneuverable in the water as the Journey 10 and a little harder to transport.

The shape of the Journey 12 makes it much more ‘sharp’ and ‘pointy’ which does mean that you break waves a lot easier, but the long keel is knife-like and helps increase speed. So this presents a hard decision for the angler to weigh up stability with the Journey 10 with the speed of the Journey 12.

In response to the perhaps small storage on offer with the Journey 10, the Journey 12 has a lot more storage capacity especially on the bow which can be a selling point for some anglers.

The kayakers of the world love a good modification, and I don’t think it should be discouraged. While you may void your warranty, certain modifications could make the Journey 10 a particularly fruitful purchase, with the right tools.

The seat is the main quandary with the Journey 10, many people chose to modify their own seat to fit the Journey 10. Firstly, make sure you get something that is mesh or a neoprene-type material so that it dries quickly, so you don’t run into another soggy bottom problem.

A seat mod also means that you can stay in the boat for longer expeditions and potentially catch more fish.

The rod holders can potentially be another issue that is solvable with modification. The rod holders, some report, are potentially too shallow and some customers fear that they will lose their rod.

One way to solve this is with PVC pipe of some sort and fitting them into the existing rod holder to provide a more stable base for your rod to go into. If you have expensive rods, this could be a mod worth considering.

For that pesky non waterproof compartment in between your legs, some chose to put sealant around the lid to ensure water doesn’t get in and you can have another dry compartment on your kayak.

Another modification that can help with fishing is to secure an anchoring line to the kayak.

On the Journey 10 there is no mount or attachment for such an anchor. We have seen some modifications for an anchor where people have drilled into the kayak to create a sealed and secure attachment for the boat.

An anchor means that if you are sitting in one spot while you are fishing the anchor will stop you moving from that position and being taken by the current.

The Brass Tax

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10 is a great angling kayak for the entry level angler who wants to fish on a low current lake. The Journey 10 provides some great features that set it apart from its competitors such as the pivoting angling rod that make it perfect for beginners or veterans of the fishing game.

If you aren’t planning on going anywhere fast and want a relaxing fishing experience in a stable boat then the Journey 10 is for you. Want more comfort and speed? Just look to Sun Dolphin’s Journey 12 for an upgrade.

For an entry-level angling kayak, that doesn’t break the bank, the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 ss is the purchase for you.

While advanced paddlers often set their sights on kayaks brandishing several-thousand-dollar price tags, kayaking newcomers are usually keen to spend as little as possible on their first kayak. While this is a completely understandable notion, many anglers who shop at the low end of the cost spectrum end up disappointed with their purchase. Often, these bargain-priced kayaks are poorly built, handle terribly and lack the features anglers want in a fishing kayak.

However, there are a few high-quality kayaks available for budget-conscious anglers, such as the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS. Built from high-quality materials and designed to perform the way kayaking novices need, the Journey 10 SS is a great craft for novices and it will likely foster a profound love of the sport, which is sure to last a lifetime.

sun dolphin journey 10 ss mods

  • Very affordably priced, yet high-quality kayak
  • Stable for its size and highly maneuverable
  • Plenty of storage space for tackle and gear
  • The craft doesn’t provide enough stability to permit standing
  • The seat back is not adjustable
  • No handles are included on the sides of the cockpit

Build Quality

Like many higher-priced kayaks, the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS is built from UV-resistant Fortiflex High-Density Polyethylene. This ensures that your kayak will remain rigid while loaded down with equipment and that it will stand up to the bumps and scrapes that occur during fishing trips. A relatively small craft, the Journey 10 SS measures 10 feet long and 30 inches wide.

Storage Capacity

Despite being a relatively small kayak, the Journey 10 SS provides anglers with several different places to store gear and tackle. A large, open cargo area is situated at the bow and includes bungee straps to keep things like coolers, backpacks and bait wells secure. A large click-seal hatch (called the Portable Accessory Carrier) is located at the stern (and bungee straps are found here, as well, for additional storage space) and a smaller one is located directly in front of the seat.

Two flush-mounted rod holders are situated behind the seat, while an articulating rod holder is provided in front of the seat.  One paddle-keeper is also included so that you can keep your hands free for tying on lures and fishing.

sun dolphin journey 10 ss mods

It is often difficult to find a small craft that provides a comfortable ride, but the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS boasts a relatively roomy cockpit, to ensure you have plenty of elbow and knee room. Thigh padding is included around the cockpit rim, and a thick, padded seat back is provided to keep your back comfortable.

Adjustable foot braces ensure that paddlers of all heights can find a comfortable paddling position and the storage areas (including the rod holders) are situated in places that are relatively easy to reach.

Like most other small crafts, the Journey 10 SS lacks the stability that many larger kayaks do, but it still provides enough stability to keep you upright while paddling around your local lake.

It isn’t designed to handle rough or choppy water, and you probably won’t find it stable enough to permit standing, but it won’t rock back and forth when you paddle like many small boats do. Generally speaking, it provides sufficient, if not spectacular, stability for the average beginner.

sun dolphin journey 10 ss mods

While the Journey 10 SS leaves a little to be desired in terms of stability, its maneuverability helps make up for this deficiency. The Journey 10 SS cuts through the water quickly for a small craft, and it turns on a dime. It is a great choice for anglers who like to fish small water, where it is often necessary to navigate shoreline obstacles, overhanging vegetation and other obstacles.

This kayak is also easy to move across dry ground, thanks to its light weight (the Journey 10 SS only weighs 44 pounds), and the presence of two retractable carrying handles. Most solo paddlers will find it easy to get this kayak from their car to the water and back.

sun dolphin journey 10 ss mods

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS is a great choice for beginning kayakers. It features most of the things an angler would want in a kayak, including plenty of storage space, a roomy cockpit and several rod holders, and it performs in a manner that will benefit those who are just learning to paddle.

It is very affordable, yet well-made, and it provides great stability for its size, which helps beginners feel confident while scooting around on the water. It would be nice if the seat was adjustable and if the craft were stable enough to permit standing, but relatively few kayaks at this price point do so either.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss Kayak: A Guide to Features and Modifications

If you’re in the market for a new kayak, the Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss is definitely worth considering. This sit-on-top fishing kayak offers a range of features and accessories that make it ideal for both beginners and experienced anglers. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the material and construction of the kayak, its accessories and outfitting, as well as some popular modifications that can enhance your fishing experience.

Key Takeaways

Material and Construction

Carry handle and drain plug, paddle holder, adjustable foot braces, molded seat shape, scupper holes, storage options, rod holders, scupper plugs, accessory tracks, paddle clips, seat upgrades, trolling motor mount.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss is constructed from UV-stabilized Fortiflex, a type of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). This material is commonly used in kayak hull manufacturing due to its durability and affordability. What sets this kayak apart is the UV-stabilized aspect, which provides protection against the harmful effects of sun exposure. So, you can enjoy your fishing adventures without worrying about the kayak deteriorating under the sun.

Accessories and Outfitting

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss comes equipped with a variety of outfitting components and accessories that cater to the needs of fishing enthusiasts. Let’s explore some of these features:

At the bow of the kayak, you’ll find a convenient carry handle for easy transportation. Just behind the handle, there’s a drain plug designed to remove any water that enters the hull. Make sure to close the drain plug before launching to keep your kayak dry and stable.

One of the most important yet often overlooked features of a fishing kayak is the paddle holder. The Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss has a recessed ledge with a bungee cord along its length, providing a secure place to store your paddle. With this feature, you can focus on reeling in that big catch without worrying about your paddle floating away.

Located within the forward end of the cockpit, the adjustable foot braces offer multiple positions for comfortable and powerful leg positions while paddling or landing a fish. These sliding foot braces allow you to find the perfect fit for your individual needs.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss features a molded seat shape that provides a stable and supportive sitting position. However, please note that this kayak does not come with padding for the seat. If you prefer a more cushioned experience, consider purchasing a seat pad or outfitting foam to enhance your comfort during long fishing trips.

Underneath the seat, you’ll notice scupper holes, which are designed to drain out any water that splashes into the kayak. While these holes help keep the kayak dry, they can also result in a wet seat during your adventures. So be prepared for a little splashing and embrace the exciting experience of being close to the water.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss offers two molded-in triangular tankwells for storage, one at the bow and another toward the stern. Although these tankwells accommodate smaller bags and boxes, they may not fit the larger milk crates commonly used by kayak anglers for tackle organization. However, Sun Dolphin provides a removable storage hatch called the Portable Accessory Compartment (PAC) that fits into the tankwell on the stern. This hatch can be easily installed or removed, providing you with a choice between closed or open storage options. Additionally, there is a small hatch between your legs in the cockpit to keep your personal belongings stowed away safely.

For avid anglers, rod holders are a must-have feature. The Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss includes three rod holders to accommodate your fishing gear. Two flush-mounted rod holders are located directly behind the cockpit, while the third is a swiveling rod holder positioned toward the front of the cockpit. This swiveling rod holder allows you to have a rig ready for action at a moment’s notice.

Kayak Mods for the Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss

Kayak anglers are known for customizing their kayaks to enhance their fishing experience. Here are some popular modifications you can make to your Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss:

On chilly days or when paddling in calm waters, you may want to keep water from splashing up through the scupper holes. Sun Dolphin offers scupper plugs that are easily removable, allowing you to customize your kayak based on weather conditions and personal preferences.

Accessory tracks, such as those available from brands like Scotty, are a great addition to your kayak. These tracks provide a platform for attaching electronic components or a GoPro camera to capture exciting moments during your fishing adventures.

If the built-in paddle bungee doesn’t suit your needs, consider purchasing paddle clips from brands like RAM. These clips provide a secure hold for your paddle, ensuring it stays within reach while you focus on landing that trophy largemouth or snook.

Given that the Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss has a molded plastic seat without padding, upgrading the seat may be a priority for some. You can easily shape a block of mini-cell outfitting foam to create a customized seat, or opt for a seat pad like the Yak Gear Sand Dollar cushion. For those with more DIY skills, installing a folding seat can provide additional comfort and support during your fishing trips.

Adding a trolling motor to your fishing kayak can greatly expand your range and efficiency on the water. While there isn’t a specific trolling motor designed for the Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss, you can purchase aftermarket mounts and use a little DIY know-how to attach the motor to the stern or create a self-made frame to secure it alongside the kayak. Just remember not to obstruct the scupper holes permanently when making modifications.

In conclusion, the Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss is a versatile and reliable fishing kayak that offers a range of features and customization options. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned angler, this kayak provides everything you need for an enjoyable and successful fishing experience. So, gear up, hop on your Sun Dolphin Journey 10ss, and embark on countless unforgettable adventures on the water!

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS Kayak Review

Taking your kayak on a fishing trip can be a struggle if you have a heavy vessel and you’re on your own. But the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS is designed to make your fishing trip all the more comfortable.

Considerations Before Buying A SOT Kayak

Before you dive straight into  buying a SOT kayak  there are a few things you should think about. Will you be planning to paddle in cold weather? Because a sit-on-top yak may not be the best choice, as you are likely to get wet when you’re paddling a SOT.

You should also consider whether or not you’re planning to use it for multi-day trips or for spending hours at a time on the water, as you’ll want one that’s as comfortable as possible.

Another thing to think about is the type of water you plan on paddling in, as there will be different hull shapes that will be better suited to choppier water if you’re planning on using it in the sea.

However, with a SOT you’re free to jump in and out whenever you like because of the more open design. You don’t have the same restrictions that you would have in a sit-inside, nor do you have to learn wet exits and Eskimo rolls, so a SOT can be a great yak for beginners or less experienced paddlers.

That doesn’t mean a sit-on-top has less features or capabilities than a traditional sit-inside. There are SOTs that are designed for various activities, such as fishing, touring, surfing and even scuba diving, not to mention the recreational ones.

Top Features Of The Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS

Who is it for.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS is a 10 foot sit-on-top fishing kayak aimed at those who want to enjoy some time on the water fishing in their favorite, hard to access spots without bringing along too much gear.

Its short length and lower weight capacity, of just 250 pounds for you and all your gear, means it’s not really suitable if you’re planning on going on a multi-day fishing adventure with camping equipment.

There are other Sun Dolphin kayaks that might take your fancy.

For being such a compact yak, there are still a lot of storage options. Behind the seat there is a large dry storage hatch for keeping your gear safe, as well as a storage compartment at the bow. Both the bow and stern storage areas have bungee cord rigging.

There are three rod holders; two that are flush mounted and one that can swivel. On top of that there is even a place to store your paddle, on either side of the yak, for when you’ve got your hands tied up dealing with your rods.

In addition to this there is a cup holder conveniently located in front of the seat, as well as another small dry hatch for your phone and keys and a small molded compartment with bungee cords, for a water bottle.

Weighing 44 pounds and being just 10 feet long, this is a pretty portable vessel, so it could be a good choice if you’re heading out on your own and need a yak that you can easily transport by yourself.

This one has easy-to-use retractable carrying handles and its short length means it can fit into the bed of most pickup trucks with the tailgate down.

Being 10 feet long and 30 inches wide means it’s going to be a lot more stable than a longer, narrower yak. Designed for lakes and slow-moving rivers, it should be able to handle moderate current without tipping over.

The Journey 10 SS is designed more for its fishing features and portability rather than comfort. With no padded seat, you might find that spending long periods of time sitting in this yak may not be the most comfortable. However, there is a padded seat back, which boosts the comfort a little.

> SOT Kayak Seats

The molded seat is not raised off the floor, so you may also find you get a little more wet than you would on a raised seat. However, the seating area is quite large, so you could find you’ve got more room to shift and get comfy.

The yak benefits from having adjustable foot braces, so you can move them for a more comfortable foot position. It also has padded sides for your thighs, giving you a little extra comfort while you stabilize.

Journey 10 Alternatives

Old town vapor 10 angler.

This sit-inside fishing kayak is the same length as the Journey 10 SS but is a little narrower, at just 28.5 inches, making it more streamline. It also has a greater load capacity of up to 325 pounds.

Its SIK (sit-in) design means you won’t get as wet, which could be beneficial if you plan to paddle in colder climates.

This sit-on-top is also 10 feet long, but with a wider 36 inch hull, making it more stable and you can even stand up on it. It features 3 molded seats, so you can bring others along for the trip and the seats are raised so you’re not sitting on the wet floor.

It also has a capacity of up to 500 pounds but there’s not as much dry storage.

Sun Dolphin Excursion 10

This is almost a sit-inside version of the Journey 10, with similar fishing features and dry storage hatches. It’s more lightweight, weighing just 41 pounds but is the same length and width as the journey 10, with the same weight capacity.

With this one, you’ll stay a little drier inside the large cockpit.

Conclusion: Is The Journey SS 10 Good?

  • Lightweight
  • Easy to carry
  • Fishing features
  • Low load capacity
  • Not ideal for extended trips

If you’re heading out fishing, this kayak can definitely come in handy. Compared to a recreational kayak, this one is rigged for fishing with the benefit of rod holders being pre-installed.

It can be a good choice if you’re looking for a vessel that you can easily transport in your truck and take out on the water on your own, as it’s lightweight and easy to carry.

Journey 10 SS – Pro Kayak Review

  • By Guillaume

sun dolphin journey 10 ss mods

It’s possible to fish from most kayaks, but angling models are designed specifically to make it easier. They focus on stability to give you a reliable platform to cast from and almost all have rod holders to keep your poles secure as you transit.

The Journey 10 SS is made of a durable plastic and at less than ten feet in length, is one of the shortest hard-sided kayaks .

But it can still be cumbersome to store and transport depending on your living situation and vehicle type. Before you purchase, make sure you have a secure place to store your kayak. Preferably this will be in a climate-controlled environment away from sunlight and precipitation.

If you need to drive to your fishing spot, a roof rack or a similar set-up will probably be necessary . Make sure you have a plan to securely and safely transport your kayak to the water.

Because of its open cockpit, it’s best to limit usage to warm excursions where water splashing into the cockpit won’t be a problem.

Those that fish in cold-weather regions can look to other options like the Wilderness Systems Tsunami 125 .

Journey 10 SS Specifications

  • Length : 9 feet, 6 inches
  • Width : 29.5 inches

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS Design

The Journey 10 is made of a durable plastic called polyethylene. While heavier than some higher-end kayak materials like fiberglass, it handles normal wear and tear substantially better. This durability makes it a fine choice for beginners and those that have to move their kayak around a lot.

sun dolphin journey 10 ss mods

A kayak’s speed comes from the length of its keel. A long keel usually means a faster boat. With a length of less than 10 feet, the Journey 10 is a plodder .

This may not matter if you’re out for a casual day at the lake. But if you need to cover some ground to reach your fishing hole or are traveling with friends, the Journey 10 will slow you down and increase travel time.

The short keel works to its advantage here. The Journey 10 is a r esponsive vessel able to squeeze into tight places longer kayaks wouldn’t dare attempt.

There’s no rudder installed on the basic model but that doesn’t seem to matter. Beginners and experienced paddlers will appreciate the tight turn radius.

Picture of the Sun Dolphin 10 up close to see the seat

Most fishing kayak seats are plush and comfortable allowing for long stints on the water. While the Journey 10’s seat isn’t uncomfortable, it could definitely be improved . There’s no padding for your seat and a single strip of padding along the back of the chair.

There are thigh braces and while they fit my long legs fine, I think shorter paddlers won’t find them very useful.

If you plan on spending extended periods of time in this boat I’d r ecommend outfitting the seat with additional padding to keep you comfy .

Stability & Tracking

Angling kayaks are designed to maximize stability. The last thing you want is to feel your boat rock underneath you while reeling in the big one or reaching out with a net. The Journey 10 is no different with a wide, 29.5-inch design that will allow you to shift and move around the cockpit.

Unlike some models though, it’s not stable enough to let you stand up and cast .

Also, the Journey 10 is not conducive to windy or rough conditions . It gets blown off course easily which is frustrating and makes it hard to fish in anything but calm conditions. While it may be stable for some ocean conditions, tides, currents, and waves wreak havoc with the Journey 10 and make paddling in a straight line challenging.

The polyethylene hull is as tough as they come . That being said, you should still treat your kayak carefully whenever possible.

Watch for submerged obstacles like boulders or tree branches that can scratch the hull and cause the plastic to flake. In addition to leaving scratches it will increase drag and slow you down.

On land, carry your kayak over dragging it. You may get away with dragging it short distances along sandy or pebbled beaches, but it’s not a good habit.

Weighing 41 pounds, the Journey 10 is one of the lightest fishing kayaks . The short length allows it to be carried in the bed of some pickup trucks. With a proper roof rack it can be transported relatively easily on top of most vehicles.

The lightweight and short keel mean even a kayak cart can move a Journey 10 to and from the water.

Journey 10 SS Features & Accessories

While some entry-level kayaks come with added goodies like a paddle, the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 doesn’t include any of these. It’s a bare-bones kayak model without much in the way of extra features.

The boat is designed with scupper holes to allow water to drain. But the plugs aren’t included and even more frustrating, the holes are not a standard size. If you decide to purchase plugs they’ll need to be modified to fit the holes in the Journey 10.

Journey 10 SS Fishing Ease

Picture of the Journey 10 SS set up for fishing

The Journey 10 has been outfitted with three rod holders . Two of them are flush-mounted and plenty deep so you can feel good they’ll stay in place. The third is on a swivel able to spin 360 degrees. But it doesn’t move well on its own and usually needs to be moved manually.

Many angling kayaks have gear tracks that let you install additional fishing gear like a camera or fish finder. But you won’t find anything like that in this budget model.

It does have impressive storage space . A watertight stern hatch has deck bungees pulled over the top to accommodate a tacklebox or crate. Two smaller hatches in the cockpit are there for personal effects. More deck bungees pulled across the bow give you even more open-air storage room.

But all that storage space may go to waste as the Journey 10 has a weight capacity of only 250 pounds . Depending on your build, this may limit how much gear (and fish) you can safely take with you.

While the boat turns fine without a rudder , the boat’s subpar tracking comes into play when you’re fishing and can’t have your hands on the paddle to keep you straight. A simple kayak anchor would help, but there’s no good place on the boat to tie it to.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS Value

Being one of the cheapest fishing kayaks on the market, the Journey 10 is made for beginners or people who plan to use it sporadically.

If you think you won’t go kayak fishing all that much, then this kayak is great for you.

But with no added accessories and zero customization options , the Journey 10’s ceiling is limited . This coupled with a small weight capacity and slow top speed limits it to simple day trips on mellow rivers or calm lakes.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS Testimonials

I spent some time looking around online to see if others had similar experiences with the Journey 10 from Sun Dolphin.

Some had complaints about stability while others praised it. But everyone agrees that the tracking is subpar.

First testimonial

Journey 10 SS Alternatives

Lifetime tamarack 100.

sun dolphin journey 10 ss mods

Similar to the Journey 10 , the Lifetime Tamarack 100 is made for beginners.

At ten feet in length, it is a little heavier checking in at 52 pounds.

It offers similar maneuverability and impressive stability to go along with a low load capacity of 275 pounds. The wide base means it also shares the Journey 10’s plodding pace.

What sets it apart is It has much better tracking than the Journey 10 . This allows it to enter calm or secluded bays and inlets with more confidence.

You’ll also find more customization options including the ability to install a fishfinder.

  • More customization opportunities
  • Competitively priced as a beginner fishing kayak
  • Low top speed
  • Disappointing load capacity

Read our full review of the Lifetime Tamarack 100.

Vibe Sea Ghost 110

sun dolphin journey 10 ss mods

A higher-end , albeit more expensive model, the Vibe Sea Ghost 110 is a fully loaded and serious angling kayak.

The large 425-pound load capacity and four dedicated storage areas allow for multi-day excursions .

The load capacity and storage make the Sea Ghost 110 much heavier than its entry-level counterparts. It weighs in at 62 pounds when empty .

You still get excellent stability, solid tracking, and a longer and more efficient keel that coaxes out a better top speed .

Customization options galore and one of the most comfortable kayak seats ever designed round out the laundry list of this well-thought-out and impressive fishing kayak.

  • Huge load capacity
  • Comfortable and adjustable seat
  • Gear tracks can be outfitted with many different accessories
  • Central console can have fishfinder installed

Read our full review of the Vibe Sea Ghost 110.

Sun Dolphin Journey 12

sun dolphin journey 10 ss mods

Longer and narrower than its cousin, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 can carry up to 395 pounds but weighs just 4 more pounds .

The additional length does make it a little faster and gives it improved tracking. But it has a lot of the same cons as the Journey 10.

The addition of a paddle holder is a nice touch but it still lacks the customization options of a boat like the Sea Ghost 110 .

If you’re looking for a budget fishing kayak for beginners that can carry a lot more weight, this one is better than the Journey 10.

  • Faster than the Journey 10
  • Higher weight capacity
  • Lack of gear tracks for customization
  • Improved tracking

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS – Conclusion

If you’re dipping your toes into the world of kayak fishing or you’re just looking for a cheap option, the Journey 10 won’t disappoint.

The stability and maneuverability are solid enough to allow paddlers of all experience levels to get a fishing pole on the water and give it a try.

But the subpar top speed and dearth of customization options , not to mention the tiny load capacity, severely limit where the Journey 10 can go.

Experienced paddlers or those that fall in love with the pastime will quickly outgrow these limitations and will look to move to a more high-end boat with greater versatility.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS: Features, Functions, Performance and More!

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS

Last updated on  August 20, 2022

You should try kayak fishing if you're becoming tired of basic kayaking. It's an enjoyable activity that will innovate your definition of fun when it comes to kayaking. Fishing gives you an objective while riding the kayak . If you're kayaking on a river, you may opt to head towards calmer waters to find bass, carp, or yellow perch. You could also head towards the rapids to catch fishes that love swimming near turbulent waters.

So what's a right fishing kayak ? Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS Kayak might be one. This product piqued my curiosity, so I got it first hand. Today, I'll be giving my impressions about this product's features, performance, and functions.

By the way, I did a review about Sun Dolphin Aruba 10. You might want to read it if you're looking for an excellent recreational kayak.

Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 General Info

Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 is a fishing kayak . Nonetheless, most of Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 features make it an excellent recreational kayak and beginner's whitewater kayak. This product's sibling is Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS kayak that's also filled with features that cater to kayak fishing needs.

Sun Dolphin Journey Sit-on-top Fishing Kayak (Sand, 10-Feet)

  • Great for lakes and rivers and to get to those excluded fishing spots
  • Lightweight, easy to carry
  • Tracks and paddles with ease while offering maximum stability
  • P.A.C. (Portable Accessory Carrier)
  • Two flush mount and one swivel fishing rod holders

Journey SS 10 might be the shortest kayak from Sun Dolphin. Sun Dolphin Excursion has a length of 292 cm and beats Sun Dolphin SS 10's length by 1 cm. On the other hand, Sun Dolphin Boss 12 measures 375 cm and beats this product's length by 84 cm. Lastly, Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS measures 364 cm and is longer than Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 by 73 cm.

Sun Dolphin SS 10 looks a bit similar to Sun Dolphin 12 SS. You might get confused between the two as a result. Still, Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 and Journey 12 SS have one key difference. The latter has a more dynamic color tone than the latter. Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 is a more noticeable kayak than Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS.

Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 is made out of UV-resistant material. This kayak is new to me, but I'm pretty sure that the UV-resistant material will make it last an average of 5 or 8 years. Given that it's maintained well, Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10's lifetime might reach ten years.

The design of Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 might appeal to men. It has a sleek design that caters to speed. Its look reminds me of Intex Explorer K2 and Intex Challenger K2 inflatable kayaks. However, I prefer the design of Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 compared to the two because it has additional details that provide a sporty feel. This product is also okay if you're a woman. Its design allows for lightweight kayak riding.

By the way, I reviewed Intex Explorer K2 and Intex Challenger K2 recently. Read my review on these kayaks for you to get third party opinion before buying an inflatable kayak.

Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 is a large kayak, so its cockpit has plenty of room. For this reason, it can act as a makeshift tandem kayak if children want to tag along. Also, a full cockpit means that Sun Journey SS 10 is an excellent kayak for big guys. Undoubtedly, big guys riding this kayak won't cramp their legs or stiffen their shoulders, body, or arms.

Lastly, you can ride Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 in lakes, class 1-2 rapids, and seas. Nevertheless, you should know that this product's performance excels for kayaking in lakes. Also, it's weight capacity is pretty good for a single fishing kayak. Rest assured that you can load Sun Dolphin Journey10 SS with kayaking and fishing equipment without worrying about buoyancy.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS Review

SUNDOLPHIN Sun Dolphin Journey Sit-on-top Fishing Kayak (Olive, 10-Feet)

Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 uses bright or slightly dark brown base color tone. Furthermore, this base color tone is lined with patterns that give Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS a luxurious look. Don't worry if you don't like this design. Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 is also available in plain bright or light dark brown color.

This product's coating doesn't reflect light very well. For this reason, you should expect that Sun Journey 10 SS isn't very discernible at seas, lakes, and rivers. I recommend that you wear green PFD when riding this kayak. This is because the base color tones of bright or light dark brown make any green objects appear.

Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 has a build that's reminiscent to Intex kayaks. It features a narrow hull and highly pointed stern and bow. However, Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 might beat Intex kayaks' design because it comes with embossments on its siding, bow, and stern. It is these embossments that add a sporty feel to Sun Dolphy Journey SS 10 Kayak.

In connection, a narrow hull and highly pointed stern and bow allow this kayak to cruise fast without wobbling.

Manufacturers designed the cockpit of Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 for spacious riding. The cockpit of this kayak takes most of its length. There's a lot of room for the legs and arms. This is possible because the seat is installed near the stern. As a result, Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 has a platform that you can even walk on.

Weight & Capacity

This kayak's maximum weight capacity is 250 pounds. Pair this with the well-designed cockpit, and Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 becomes an excellent kayak for big guys. This kayak's stability doesn't change significantly, even if it bears a lot of weight. If you're big, you shouldn't think twice about checking this kayak out.

This kayak weighs 44 pounds. Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 is pretty light, considering that it's a polyethylene-based fishing kayak. However, carrying this product by yourself is pretty hard. Also, transporting it from one location to the next will be difficult if your car doesn't have the right storage equipment for kayaks . I recommend you buy a car roof rack and a kayak trolley if you wish to get Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10.

In connection, Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 measures 291 cm. It's pretty short for a fishing kayak. Still, this kayak's length will do if you're looking for a fishing kayak that's easy to transport and maneuver.

Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 doesn't have any issues about its color, build, carrying capacity, and size. In terms of this, I give this kayak five stars.

Notable Features

  • Rugged High-Density Polyethylene Material
  • Self Bailing Function
  • Multiple Storage Options
  • Adjustable Foot Braces
  • Rold Holder Options

Like Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 , this kayak is also made out of Rugged High-Density UV Resistant Polyethylene. This polyethylene material is exclusive to Sun Dolphin's kayaks only. With UV resistant polyethylene, Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 can withstand deformation that heat causes. Furthermore, the Rugged High-Density UV Resistant Polyethylene material allows you to store this kayak for a month without cover.

Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 is a fishing kayak, so I expected it to have a self-bailing function. Nevertheless, its drain valves are very surprising. Dirt and small debris that are present in water don't clog them. Also, the cockpit stays very dry because the drain valves are highly efficient. Some kayaks have drain valves that allow a bit of water to settle on the water before draining. This is not the case with Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10. It's drain valves suck water immediately for the feet not to get wet.

The storage options of Sun Dolphin are superb. This kayak has a lot of parts that you can use to store things. For instance, the cockpit is full enough for you to bring baits, drinks, and food. Also, there's a storage compartment at the stern that you can use to keep a phone and other devices dry . As a bonus, removing this storage compartment reveals an extra storage compartment for you to store caught fish or other objects.

In connection, there's also a cord at the stern. You can't hold this cord whenever Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 shakes. However, this cord is useful because it holds the removable storage and the contents of the hidden compartment.

Near the seat are foot braces that manufacturers installed on the siding of Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10's cockpit. You can adjust these foot braces to allow for more legroom. The foot braces become very handy when you're railing fish in. They provide an excellent footing for you to hold your ground firmly.

You may even opt to pull the foot braces near for comfort. When adjusted at a close distance, you can use the foot braces to relax your hurting legs.

For me, Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS is a must-have for kayak fishers because it comes with 3-rod holders. Two of its holders are flush mount holders that manufacturers placed on the bow. The other rod holder is a swivel rod holder that you can find on the embossment in front of the seat. The swivel turns well and is useful for catching dominant fishes such as bass, trout, sunfish, and catfish. On the other hand, the flush rod holders on the stern are useful for catching smaller fishes.

Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 would have been a perfect fishing kayak if its seat was more comfortable. I was not impressed with its seats. As a result, I give the features of this product, four stars.

I tested this kayak on a lake, moderately rapid river, and a nearby beach. Here's how this product performed on each.

Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10's performance on lakes spoke truly about the manufacturers' claims. Kayaking with this product on lakes is a breeze. It reacts fast but is heavy enough to hold itself against the wind. I paddled hard to gain speed, and I discovered that this kayak remained pretty stable no matter how fast it went. Kayak fishing on the lake is pretty good. Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 didn't wobble or shake no matter how hard I swung or pulled the fishing rod.

Whitewater kayaking with Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 is okay on a moderately rapid river. The stability of this product remained the same as I was reaching the entrance of the whitewater. However, stability started to decrease when I was traversing the main flow near rocks. Evading rocks and other debris wasn't very easy. Also, I did a small drop with this kayak. I was fortunate that it only attempted to capsize. In summary, you may use Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS as a whitewater kayak, but be sure to check for rocks and massive drops.

Sea kayaking and fishing were excellent. Small to moderate waves don't cause Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 to capsize. However, Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 sits pretty low, so water gets into the cockpit. Still, I didn't fret about this because the drain valves got me covered.

As I said earlier, you might have to wear a bright colored PFD for kayaking with Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10. This is especially true when riding this kayak at sea.

Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 will perform well at lakes, moderately rapid rivers, and seas. I give this product's performance as five stars.

Should There Be Improvements?

Sun Dolphin is an excellent kayak for kayak fishing, whitewater kayaking, and recreational kayaking. Nevertheless, I think that there are some aspects of it that manufacturers have to improve.

Firstly, I wish that this kayak comes with a removable skeg. A removable skeg would provide this kayak with absolute stability regardless of which bodies of water it's cruising at.

Secondly, the manufacturers have to redesign the seat. The seat padding and backrest aren't comfortable. After using this Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS for quite some time, I have to replace the default seat with a new seat to maximize comfort.

Lastly, I think that manufacturers might have to put reflectors on this kayak. The brown color finish of this product doesn't provide a lot of visibility and powerboats might overrun it.

Concluding Thoughts

If you're looking for a way to mix up your kayaking experience, I highly recommend giving fishing a try. Sun Journey 10 SS is a fishing kayak that will be a great purchase for beginners and seasoned kayakers. I suggest that you buy this product if you're planning to learn kayak fishing after learning the basics of kayaking. Having this product means that you won't have to switch from one kayak to next.

Sun Dolphin 10 SS is a dynamic kayak. It's a great way to spend time outdoors and catch some delicious dinner in the process. Make sure you do your research before purchasing a fishing kayak, as not all of them are created equal. I hope you have as much fun on the water as I did!

Bottom Line:

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS is one of the best budget sit-on-top kayaks of 2024 and fares well as a simple fishing kayak good for short trips, reviewers agree. However, it’s let down by a lack of reliable tracking and speed. That said, experts tend to agree you likely won’t need those attributes from this kind of vessel!

This boat arrives with tons of storage options and is very easy to lift, move and store. Experts agree that the price point is likely the biggest selling point, though you may need to get creative with the scupper holes!

Price Comparison:

based on 3 reviews

Performance Ratings:

  • Onboard Storage
  • Portability

Comparison to Similar Kayaks:

  • Very lightweight and easy to move
  • Adjustable seat and rests are easy to manage
  • Durably polyethylene construction
  • Stacks of storage options
  • A great budget choice
  • Tracks very poorly
  • Slow on most waters
  • Doesn't perform well in bad weather

Performance of the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS

Experts agree that the Journey 10 SS is a cheap and cheerful kayak that “gives you what you pay for.” They say it’s a nice fishing kayak for light fishing trips or recreational paddling. It doesn’t achieve bracing speeds, and reviewers agree that its tracking is fairly poor, even on flat water.

However, it does pick up praise for its multiple storage options, such as flush mount rod holders, shock cord deck rigging, a portable accessory carrier, and tackle holders. There’s a paddle holder too to free your hands for fishing. That said, reviewers note that the boat’s relatively low max capacity means you may not be able to make complete use of them.

This kayak also scores fairly well on durability. Its hard plastic shell, experts claim, gives it more than enough resistance against spikier adventures.

However, reviewers also note that users may wish to plug the scupper holes on their own accord, as they’re not always reliable. One expert even used third party ear plugs to fill the gaps!

Comfort-wise, experts feel the lack of a padded seat is notable, but the flexible and slight-padded back rest does offer some relief. It also has adjustable foot braces. There are foot and thigh pads onboard, but reviewers query whether or not this is a great option for shorter riders (e.g. under six feet tall).

The general consensus otherwise is that it’s a fantastically affordable boat, but you might not expect “kayak of the year” features out of it.

Overall Rating

I'm fairly mixed on the Journey 10 SS. It's great for beginners who want to get to grips with tighter paddling from the get-go, but it really isn't the best at tracking. It's also pretty light on capacity. That said, I find it's a reasonable enough boat for day trips and light kayak fishing here and there.

Creating A Simpler Life Off Grid

Despite the fact this kayak is definitely not going to win any races (and its tracking is fairly poor), it's great for gentle adventures and is reasonably supportive. For the money, it's a great value kayak that doesn't try to compete beyond its station.

Monkey N Around

This is a seriously cheap kayak option that I think makes for a good introduction to fishing kayaks in general. I'd consider this a good purchase if you're in the market for an inexpensive kayak first and foremost, but it really doesn't track well when fishing on the flat.
