glam on tour montreux

As one of the world’s most successful bands with over 300 million record sales worldwide, 25 years in the UK album charts, and 18 No. 1 albums, Queen is regarded as one of the best bands out there.

The Queen Studio Experience is unforgettable for those who love the band.

The History of the Queen Studio Experience

glam on tour montreux

The story behind the studio begins on the 4th of December 1971. When Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, a fire tore through the Montreux Casino due to a fan’s flare gun. Upon opening five years later, the Montreux Casino contained a state-of-the-art recording studio called Mountain Studios .

Designed by American studio designer Tom Hidley, Mountain Studios quickly became a favorite destination for music stars such as AC/DC, David Bowie, and The Rolling Stones. The Mountain Studios was used by Queen in July 1978 for the first time to record their seventh album Jazz . It would be a year later, in 1979, that they would come back to Montreux to purchase the studios. Relocation of the Mountain Studios facility took place in 2002 near Chatel St. Denis in Attelens.

In Montreux’s peaceful surroundings, they were able to focus and create some of their most memorable last songs. The studios were owned by Queen from 1979 until 1993.

After months of planning and preparation, the Queen Studio Experience opened its doors to the public in 2013. Nowadays, the Queen Studio Experience is a unique attraction in Montreux that brings fans of the legendary rock band Queen closer to their music. The experience takes visitors on a journey through the band’s history, allowing them to learn more about the recording of some of Queen’s most famous last songs.

Since then, it has become a popular destination for fans of the band from all over the world. Visitors can explore the studios and learn more about the band, including the mixing desk used to create their iconic sound.

The story of Freddie Mercury and Queen in Montreux

Accompanied by a guide and an audioguide, Freddie Tours takes you on the footsteps of Freddie Mercury in Montreux!

With the Freddie Tours , you will be able to explore the city and experience the years when Freddie Mercury, the legendary voice of Queen, came to seek inspiration and recharge his batteries in this peaceful town of Montreux located on the shores of Switzerland’s Lake Geneva.

First arrival in Montreux in 1978

Queen's four musicians (Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor) are regular visitors to the Swiss Riviera.

Their first visit dates to July 1978: the group Queen had just finished the tour of the album "News of the World" and chose the famous Mountain Studios in Montreux to record its successor. This seventh LP was to be entitled Jazz.

The Montreux experience was so productive that Queen took advantage of an unexpected opportunity to buy the Mountain Studios, whose premises were in the Montreux Casino .

The group became the owners in 1979, one year after the recording of Jazz. The British quartet took advantage of this opportunity to work on the mixing of Live Killers, a live album recorded in the spring of 1979 during their European tour. Offering a synthesis of Queen's first seven releases, this live album was released in June of the same year.

The first two albums produced by Queen in Montreux "Jazz" and "Live Killers".

Freddie Mercury, the beginning of his career

Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara on 5 September 1946 in Stone Town, Zanzibar protectorate in southern Africa. His parents, Jer and Bomi Bulsara, were civil servants working for the British colonial office. His younger sister Kashmira was born when he was 7 years old. Farrokh Bulsara spent his school years in India where he began to learn to play the piano. At the age of 12, he joined a local rock band where he became a pianist. Farrokh decided to change his first name and chose Freddie, a nickname frequently used by his classmates.

At the age of 17, he returned to Zanzibar to join his parents. The family left the Tanzanian archipelago in a hurry a year later because of the violent revolution that had broken out. The Bulsara family took refuge in 1964 in Feltham, a suburb in the west of London, not far from Heathrow airport where he later worked.

Between 1966 and 1970, Freddie joined various local bands as a singer, each of which became more and more famous. A few years later, the musicians decided to abandon the name Smile in favour of Queen.

The membership of this legendary and internationally known band would remain the same until Freddie Mercury's death 20 years later.

No less than 6 studio albums recorded in Montreux

The golden era between Queen and Montreux lasted from 1978 to 1995. Six studio albums were the result and offered history some of its greatest rock songs.

The collection of albums recorded in Montreux were "Jazz" in 1978, "Hot Space" in 1982, "A Kind of Magic" in 1986, "The Miracle" in 1989, and "Innuendo" in 1991, which is the last studio recording in Freddie Mercury's lifetime. Then in 1995 came "Made in Heaven", Queen's 15th album, produced with the vocal parts recorded by the singer before his death.

The relationship between Queen and Montreux has known its ups and downs, but it was especially the beginning that was difficult. Musicians who were used to the big London parties were quickly bored in the small seaside resort at the foot of the Swiss Alps in the canton of Vaud. But they soon realized, and Freddie Mercury in particular, that Montreux was able to offer them, far from the invading tumult of the media and the fans, the quietude necessary to write new songs.

Queen in Montreux in 1988

"If you want peace of mind, come to Montreux" Freddie Mercury said to his friend Montserrat Caballé, with whom he recorded the famous song "Barcelona" at the end of the 80s. This song, which reflects Freddie Mercury's love of opera, became the official anthem of the Catalan Olympic Games in 1992.

From 1987, Freddie Mercury gradually became attached to the area, so much so that he finally decided to divide his life between the Garden Lodge, his main London residence, and Montreux. Freddie Mercury first lived in rented villas, then in a luxury hotel in which he became a regular guest, before finally acquiring a flat in 1991. By then he knew he was seriously ill and more than ever was looking for the peace and serenity that the region offered.

Made in Heaven, the post-mortem album

It was while contemplating the lake and the mountains from his new Montreusian base that he was inspired to write the lyrics for A Winter's Tale. This song is an ode to the city of Montreux. It will appear on the posthumous album "Made in Heaven", released in 1995.

At the beginning of 1991, when the album Innuendo had just been released, Freddie Mercury felt that he was losing the fight he had been waging against AIDS since 1987. He devoted himself, body and soul, to composition and very regularly invests in the Mountains Studio in Montreux. He felt his time was running out and guessed that he might not be able to complete a new album in his lifetime. His only obsession was then to record as much material as possible to allow the three other members of Queen (Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon) to finish the arrangement work after his death.

After Freddie Mercury's death on November 24, 1991, Brian, Roger and John took a few years before resuming work on what would become Queen's final album. They then returned to Montreux to finish the songs they had started a few years earlier. Always accompanied by David Richards at the Mountain Studios, they tirelessly rearranged every part of each song, until they reached the masterpiece that is Made in Heaven.

Made In Heaven reached number one in the British charts as soon as it was released. The posthumous album went five times platinum with more than 20 million sales worldwide. The cover of this last Queen album is a view of the mountains and lake that Freddie loved to contemplate from the windows of his Montreux penthouse.

Freddie Mercury's birthday in Montreux

Since 2001, the Freddie Celebration Days have been organized in Montreux by the Montreux Celebration Association. This major and entirely free event takes place around 5 September, Freddie Mercury's birthday. The Freddie Tours are organized by Lucien Muller, president of the Montreux Celebration association and have been offering guided tours in Montreux since 2020. These visits will allow you to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the years when Freddie Mercury and Queen used to stay in Montreux.

Bohemian Rhapsody, the tribute film

In 2018, Bohemian Rhapsody was released. The biopic devoted to Freddie Mercury generated millions of dollars in revenue worldwide. The film was nominated for Best Picture and its actor Rami Malek, who plays the role of the famous singer was crowned Best Actor at the Hollywood Oscars. Bohemian Rhapsody also won Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

The film, which allowed itself some freedom in terms of its screenplay, did however benefit from the support and supervision of Queen's two historical members, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. Their manager, Jim Beach, was also actively involved in its development. Bohemian Rhapsody concludes with the band's famous 1985 performance at the legendary "Live Aid" concert at Wembley Stadium. Freddie Mercury was then at the peak of his art and career.

The film poster for the Bohemian Rhapsody movie released in 2018

Small anecdote, in 1975, their record company EMI refused to release a single of the famous song "Bohemian Rhapsody", which they felt was too long. The title song was indeed 6 minutes long, well beyond the industry standards at the time. It had also been considered too strange, with its many changes of rhythm and its chorus which at the time was described as psychedelic. However, this track from the album "A Night at The Opera" suddenly made its comeback on the charts. By the end of 2018, Bohemian Rhapsody became the most played song of the 21th century with more than 1.6 billion online plays to date.

Since the release of the film Bohemian Rhapsody, an increasing number of tourists and fans of the singer come to admire the famous bronze statue of Freddie Mercury . Inaugurated in 1996 in Montreux, it is the pride of Montreux residents and allows fans from all over the world to come and meditate and show respect in this very special place.

Claude Nobs Chalet

glam on tour montreux

True inspiration comes from innovation – a fact that Claude Nobs knew all too well. However, the co-founder of the iconic Montreux Jazz Festival didn’t start off easily. When Claude decided to move back to his sleepy Swiss hometown of Montreux from New York in the ‘80s to pursue his unique dream of hosting world-class acts in the mountains, everybody was against it.   “You’re crazy, nobody is going to come to see you here in the mountains!” they said.

Despite this, he went ahead with his plans, transforming his home into a wonderland and also calling on his recently-made New York connections, including Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegun of Atlantic Records. While working for the Tourism Office of Montreux (where he had also been employed prior to moving to New York), he organized the first 3-day music festival in Montreux.

Hosted in 1967, he invited a number of famous artists, including Charles Lloyd, Keith Jarrett, Ron McLure, and Jack DeJohnette, to perform – which they did. And then, subsequently, more acts over the years, such as David Bowie, Quincy Jones, and BB King – who returned again and again to enjoy his warm hospitality.

The festival was a hit. Thus, the Montreux Jazz Festival was born, and the town also became a hotspot for world-class musicians. Today, Montreux and the Claude Nobs Chalets are home to much more than the iconic music festival and its star-studded acts, though. In passing, a number of its famous guests have also left behind their precious creations and personal effects.

Paintings by Miles Davis and Ronnie Wood, BB King’s Guitar, Freddie Mercury’s piano, Carlos Santana’s Conga, and various other priceless historical music memorabilia and artworks call the chalets home today – all of which can be appreciated by visitors.

Of all, Claude’s audiovisual collection (inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World International Register in 2013 when he passed away) – over 5,000 hours worth of priceless film recordings, including live concerts, rare improvised jam sessions, and otherwise unknown footage of artists – is the crowning jewel of the collection.

To this day, Switzerland is proud to share Claude Nob’s collection and legacy with friends, artists, and music lovers from near and far. The Claude Nobs Chalets can be rented for both events and private tours on request.

Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania notched another clay-court success this past week, clinching the WTA 125 Montreux Nestle Open title in Montreux, Switzerland on Sunday.

No.7 seed Begu needed to mount a comeback to prevail in the final, overcoming Croatian teenager Petra Marcinko 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 in 1 hour and 33 minutes. It is Begu's third career WTA 125 singles title, to go along with her five WTA 250 titles on the Hologic WTA Tour.

Former World No.22 Begu has posted a 23-9 record on clay this season, spanning all levels. Among her other highlights on the surface this year are the Palermo semifinals, the Round of 16 in Rome, and another WTA 125 final in Antalya.

Another highlight for Begu was taking the traditional dive into the nearby lake after capturing the trophy:

"[The water] was actually really good," Begu said after her dive. "I didn't expect it, so it was really good."

Begu's affinity for clay has shown up in her career-best results at top-tier tour events. She reached the WTA 1000 Rome semifinals in 2016 and she is a three-time WTA 1000 Madrid quarterfinalist, including just last year.

Begu lost no more than three games in any set en route to this week's final. But she dropped the first set to Marcinko, a recent Junior World No.1 who won the 2022 Junior Australian Open title. However, Begu won 62 percent of Marcinko's first-service points in the final set.

In Saturday's doubles final, No.2 seeds Quinn Gleason of the United States and Ingrid Martins of Brazil eked out a 6-3, 4-6, [10-7] victory over unseeded Maria Lourdes Carle of Argentina and Simona Waltert of Switzerland in 1 hour and 44 minutes.

It is Gleason's second WTA 125 doubles title, having previously won at 2023 Ljubljana with Amina Anshba. It is also Martins' second WTA 125 doubles title, following her triumph at 2022 Montevideo with Luisa Stefani (Gleason was one of the players Martins beat in that final).

Resurrection of an Interractive Witch Map

Let’s face it, the interactive witch map was not feeling cozy on Wikipedia (the francophone one). It struggled and produces strange jargon : « the time allotted for running scripts has expired ».

And as a result it was removed from Wkipedia because no one knew how to fix it, even after submitting the issue during the Wikitechstorm in November 2019. But oh, miracle, during a Wikimidi, the weekly online meeting of les sans pagEs, the magic of the collective allowed a solution to emerge: let’s publish it on our website, you know, the one we use too little!

And so we are « thrilled and excited » (to put an american touch to our frenglish accent hoping this will prompt mass sharing for our map) to present you with a disorderly presentation of versions of the famous map. The map fetches the data entered on Wikidata (by the way, if you know of a person executed or condemned for witchcraft, send it to us, along with the references) and then, thanks to the power of geolocalisation,it allows you to visualise them all!

Interractive witch map of people executed or condemned as witches

You can click on the little red dots which will take you on a journey through Wikidata and Wikipedia articles about witches in several languages (English, French, Spanish and German) when the articles exist.

Cartography of scottisch witches’ occupation

Map of executed witches by gender.

So where can one find the old map showing the people executed according to their gender? Well, for that you have to go back to the francophone Wikipedia where an old version of the map has been put back online.

Alas this one resist to deportation to WordPress (wink wink looking for a tech person to come and help us solve this). It is currently not updated, because beyond 600 witches (roughly I don’t remember the exact number) the system can’t keep up and generates the famous error message « the time allowed for the execution of scripts has expired ».

So the only solution at the moment is to generate a static map that remains with non-updated data…. Everybody is perfect!

However, this previous version did some cool stuff that I can’t resist to talk about here :

It would give the link to the related Wikipedia articles in several languages if they exist, and it would even show a popo up with a witches pic like this :

glam on tour montreux

It showed men convicted of witchcraft in green and women in red (some might be happy for the sake of non binarity of the disappearance of this feature), and added a white dot when there was a corresponding Wikipedia article.

This is what it looked like :

glam on tour montreux

Other wikidata generated maps can show witches by date of execution:

glam on tour montreux

One finds very ancient documented cases of people ostracised for witchcraft. for example, Empress Chen Jiao , in China, died in 110 BC, or in Greece, Theoris of Lemnos is another occurrence.

In the course of our work we found a few odd things, like the discovery that in Iceland we have almost only men executed for witchcraft, although it is not clear whether this is because we have not yet recorded women or because a majority of men have been sentenced (a little nudge here if you – yep you- know about this!).

glam on tour montreux

There are also very few witches in Brittany (and Vigneron, a fellow wikipedian and wikidata evangelist tried hard to find one, he thought we had forgotten his home region) :

On the other hand, a large number of people were executed along the Alpine arc, many in Switzerland and Germany :

The witch-hunt in Europe began in 1428 in Sion, Wallis , with a large percentage of prosecuter men at the beginning. One of the emblematic cases is undoubtedly that of Pierre and Nycolin de Torrenté in 1481, victims of the concupiscence of Walter Supersaxo, Prince Bishop of Sion, who confiscated their property after their public execution (they were burned at the stake) and installed his illegitimate son at the head of Val de Bagnes. The descendants of Torrenté, wishing to clear their name, asked an archivist from the Ecole des Chartes, Chantal Amman, to research their ancestor in 15th century notarial deeds stored until very recently in the cathedral chapter of Sion.

glam on tour montreux

Other wikidata generated maps present witches by date of execution:

One can find ancient documented cases of persecuted witches : Chen Jiao, in China 110 BFC Theoris de Lemnos in Grease .

All this work was done with the help of people involved in the francophone Wikipedia project: JohnNewton8, Touam, Viking59, Tatakdh and our dedicated cartographer 0x010C (I’m sure I’m forgetting some) as well as all the people who entered the data for this map on Wikidata.

If you find a forgotten witch and want to get invloved mapping here are a few projects :

  • wikiwitches sur Wikidata all languages
  • Wikiproject witches (in english, meta)
  • Projet sorcière des sans pagEs on the francophone wikipedia

Richard Hammond says 'we saved best for last' as Grand Tour trio look back on 22 years

Oliver Browning | Wednesday 11 September 2024 14:54 BST

Richard Hammond says ‘we saved best for last’ as Grand Tour trio look back on 22-year career

Richard Hammond believes he, Jeremy Clarkson and James May have “saved the best to last” with The Grand Tour finale.

The TV presenter made the comments during an extended Q&A at BBC Television Centre ahead of a preview of the final episode of the trio’s Amazon Prime show, titled One For The Road .

Ahead of the special airing on Friday 13 September, Hammond, Clarkson and May looked back on their 22-year career working together.

The trio reminisced on stories from the early days of Top Gear in 2002, through to shooting their final special in Zimbabwe last year.

“I think we’re all in agreement, [Zimbabwe] is probably the most beautiful place any of us have ever been,” Clarkson said.

“You could argue we saved the best until last,” Hammond added.

The Glam Circuit Festival 2024: Music, Food, and Family Fun in Kampong Gelam

Table of Contents

SINGAPORE, 10 September 2024  — From 13 to 22 September, Kampong Gelam will be transformed into an immersive festival that brings the exhilarating world of racing into the heart of Singapore’s historic quarter. Titled  ‘The Glam Circuit Festival 2024’ , this 10-day event will feature tantalising culinary experiences, engaging race-themed activities for all ages, a music festival spotlighting local indie acts and a new edition of its singing competition – all held against the backdrop of the vibrant and colourful precinct. This event will be presented as part of Grand Prix Season Singapore 2024 in the lead up to Singapore’s FORMULA 1 race weekend.

The Glam Circuit Festival 2024

“The Glam Circuit Festival 2024 is a celebration that goes beyond the thrill of speed and the charm of our cultural heritage,” says Mr Zaki Maarof, Chairman of One Kampong Gelam (OKG). “It offers a multitude of experiences that symbolise the diversity and dynamism of the Singapore night race. We are excited to present an event that reflects true to the vibrant and inclusive spirit of Kampong Gelam in such a refreshing way leading up to the race weekend.”

Driven by Sustainability and Community

This year, OKG is proud to advance its commitment to sustainable practices. Partnering with green energy solutions provider, Gorental.SG, the event will deploy clean battery generators for all retail booths and selected activities to reduce its overall carbon footprint. Being 100 per cent powered by solar energy, these generators emit zero air and noise pollution.

As part of OKG’s dedication to strengthen its community outreach, beneficiaries from social service organisation APSN are also invited to attend Day 1 of the festival. This is in the spirit of including Singaporeans from all walks of life to enjoy the festivities as the country enters a celebratory mood leading up to the race weekend. Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations, Ms Grace Fu, will be officiating the event as Guest-of-Honour.

The Glam Circuit Festival 2024: What the Public Can Expect

Filled across two weekends, The Glam Circuit Festival 2024 will transform Kampong Gelam into an exhilarating journey through three distinct pillars — Dine, Play and Groove — each offering unique experiences that blend the excitement of the night race with the rich heritage of the district. From the array of culinary delights and thrilling activities to captivating live performances and a singing competition, here are some highlights to expect.

DINE to your Heart’s Delight

Feast and shop along the culinary and shopping fast lanes at Baghdad Street, Aliwal Street Carpark and Sultan Gate Park, where as many as 80 F&B brands and retail outlets come alive exclusively for the season.

Soak in the mouthwatering aromas from our dining partners serving an international array of delights as you stroll through the streets. Savor succulent kebabs and shawarma from  Arabica Kebab , indulge in the rich flavours of charcoal burgers at  AshesBurnnit , and enjoy the fresh taste of grilled seafood from  Noi Kassim BBQ . Also, don’t miss the exotic Nasi Arab from  Nasi Arab Habibi , or the uniquely flavoured croissants from  Flamboyant Goons !

These are just some of the few delectable options alongside other vendors like  Home Of Seafood  that is serving sushi and crowd-favourite  The   Original Vadai  dishing up piping fresh Indian vadai. No matter what your food cravings are for the night, these options are sure to delight! Those up for some retail therapy will also not be disappointed with the eclectic mix of retail offerings, from racing-related gear to artisanal crafts.

PLAY your way to the Podium

With your tummies filled with delicious bites, dive into the thrill of motorsport like never before with immersive stations that bring the excitement of the race season to life.

Begin at Baghdad Street Carpark to experience high-speed thrills with the  Racing Simulator . Offering an immersive racing experience, the simulator is complete with stunning graphics and responsive controls for a truly authentic adventure. Nearby, the  Scream Booth  invites participants to cheer for how much fun they are having at the festival. Scream loud and proud to earn tokens for the gachapon machine to redeem free passes to activities within the festival or dining vouchers to Cappadocia Turkish & Mediterranean Restaurant.

Over at Sultan Gate Road, look out for the  Canvas Circuitry . Here, families can unleash their creativity and collaborate on painting a life-sized sustainable cardboard race car. This one-of-a-kind installation encourages community participation while symbolising the fusion of cultures and racing through art.

If you’re feeling reminiscent of your childhood days, step into our vibrant  Games   Village  at the Aliwal Street Carpark. From Ring Toss and Mini Golf Course to Velcro Bullseye and a Bubble Play Zone, the village features a variety of classic carnival games for everyone to enjoy. What’s more, look forward to race-inspired games such as the Water Gun Race where players will use water guns to propel a mini race car forward and the Race Car Bowling where participants use race cars to knock down bowling pins. Endless entertainment and fun are promised for both the young and old!

For those looking to capture the perfect keepsake, head over to the photobooths and flash your brightest smile for the camera. These photo strips are just the best to remember all the festival fun with your loved ones. Or, if you would prefer engaging in some hands-on fun, check out  Pit Stop Mechanic  nearby to create your very own racing-themed mementos. Build and decorate your very own race car or design personalised racing gear to take home as a unique souvenir.

GROOVE to the Beat of the Glam

Looking to take a breather from the endless fun? Lounge around the sitting areas and immerse yourself in the diverse rhythms of the night. The precinct’s  Kampong Gelam Music Festival  will showcase a myriad of genres including Rock, Raggae, Indie-Pop, Malay Fusion Drums, R&B and Brazilian Percussion, as a reflection of Singapore’s rich musical landscape.

Spread across two stages at Sultan Gate Park and Aliwal Street Carpark, the festival will solely feature homegrown acts to spotlight the brimming talent in the city state. Brazilian Percussion band  Bloco Singapura  will kick off the festivities with their explosive performance followed by a dynamic lineup of acts such as local Raggae pioneers  BUSHMEN , hot favourite band  53A  that has headlined Singapore’s live music scene for more than a decade, and R&B Singer-Rapper-Songwriter  Zalelo .

Other exciting acts to look out for throughout the week include Malay Fusion Drums band  Nadi Singapura  for the passionate sound of traditional Malay music, crowd-puller soulful buskers  Fyrdauz Macbeth  and  REX , and some tasty Pop Punk-Hard Rock tunes with  Curry The Basil . There’s something for everyone regardless of your music preferences so grab a snack and head on down to enjoy the music!

On the second weekend (20 to 22 September), be at the front row seat uncovering Singapore’s next singing sensation with  Glam Voices 2024 . Featuring talented contestants from all walks of life, look forward to an exciting evening of musical talent and vocal prowess as they charm the esteemed panel of judges and audiences for the grand prize. This is more than just a competition — it’s a celebration of Singapore’s rich musical talent and a showcase of future stars.

For those seeking to keep up the fun even after the day’s main events, the  Haji Lane Hang-out  offers an exhilarating after-hours experience. Happening on 20 September (Friday), 6pm to 12am, Haji Lane will transform into a vibrant hub, providing a unique and thrilling extension to the night race experience through a lineup of live DJ performances. Groove to the beats of the DJs along the street for an unforgettable musical journey that resonates with the true spirit of Kampong Gelam.

The Glam Circuit Festival 2024 is part of the Grand Prix Season Singapore (GPSS). The event will open daily from 13 to 22 September from 2pm to 10pm from Monday to Thursday, and till 10:30pm from Friday to Sunday.
