The Taj Mahal is the monument many people know India for. The awe-inspiring beauty of the Taj and its phenomenal architecture have won it a place in the UNESCO World Heritage sites and the Seven Wonders of the World and one of the most preferred tourism place in our 1 day Agra & Fatehpur Sikri local tour sightseeing tour.

The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum that was constructed by the Mughal Emperor for his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal and is often regarded as one of the greatest symbols of love. It is made of white marble and the carvings are jewelled with precious and semi-precious stones. It is built on the banks of the holy Yamuna River.

You will surely enjoy the aesthetic qualities of this monument and it is an experience in itself. Walking on the cold marble floors and through the serene gardens, you will experience a sense of peace. On the other hand, it has a thrilling history and learning about the stories and myths that surround this monument is immensely exciting.

2. Mehtab Bagh, Agra

One Day Agra and Fatehpur Sikri Sightseeing Trip by Car Mehtab Bagh

  • Plan to Depart by : 11:55 AM
  • Must See / Things to Do: The Beautiful view of Taj Mahal from the garden.
  • Timings: 6 AM – 7 PM
  • Recommended Duration: 30 Minutes

Emperor Babur, the First Mughal Emperor of India, had built a series of 11 gardens in the eastern floodplains of the River Yamuna. The first of these gardens being the Ram Bagh and the last being the Mehtab Bagh.

The Crescent shaped garden was discovered to be the perfect viewing point for the Taj Mahal by Emperor Shah Jahan and then was reconstructed as the Mehtab Bagh or the Moonlight garden. It was then, that the garden was also installed with walkways, pools, pavilions, fountains and fruit trees.

Ironically, the garden itself posed a threat to the maintenance of the Taj Mahal after its condition deteriorated, as sands from the garden’s ground used to fly towards the mausoleum with wind.

3. Red Fort, Agra

One Day Agra and Fatehpur Sikri Sightseeing Trip by Car Red Fort

  • Plan to Depart by : 1:00 PM
  • What Not To Miss: The Sheesh Mahal, the Anguri Bagh and the Musamman Burj.
  • Timings: 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM
  • Holiday / Closed on: Monday
  • Entry Fee: Indians: Rs. 40/- per head (free for children below the age of 15)
  • Website: Red Fort, Agra

Mughal Emperor Akbar, the greatest Mughal ruler of India, had constructed this red sandstone structure over the ruins of Badalgarh. The fort existed before Emperor Akbar, but it was renovated into a red sandstone structure by him.

Agra was the administrative capital of the Mughal Empire, and this fort got its importance from there. The fort not only housed the royal family but also became the administrative and the military centre.

The fort which is spread over the area of 97 acres is believed to have around 5000 buildings built by Emperor Akbar in Gujarati and Bengali style of architecture. However, very few of these buildings survived through time, as each successive ruler changed the elements of the fort according to their needs and choice.

Emperor Shah Jahan built many marble palaces in the fort, including three marble mosques, namely, Moti Masjid, Nagina Masjid and Mina Masjid and can be visited with the 1 Day Agra & Fatehpur Sikri private Tour.

The fort has many more stories to tell, like that of imprisonment of Emperor Shah Jahan in the Musamman Burj by his own son, Emperor Aurangzeb.

It has many tourist attractions within itself, like the Sheesh Mahal (The royal dressing room, full of mirror like decorations), the Anguri Bagh (85 square gardens), the Diwan-i-Am (The public court, also the once bearer of the Peacock throne).

Also the Diwan-i-Khas (a hall for the King and dignitaries), the Khas Mahal (a white marble palace), the Nagina Masjid (a mosque specially designed for the ladies) and the Musamman Burj (the marble tower where Emperor Shah Jahan, was held prisoner and died, its balcony faces the Taj Mahal).

This monument certainly qualifies a UNESCO World Heritage site, which it rightly is.

4. Itimad-Ud-Daulah, Agra

One Day Agra and Fatehpur Sikri Sightseeing Trip by Car Itimad-Ud-Daulah

  • Plan to Depart by : 3:00 PM
  • What Not To Miss: The beautiful and unique carvings on the walls of the mausoleum.
  • Holiday / Closed on: Open on All Days
  • Website: Itimad-Ud-Daulah, Agra

Itimad-Ud-Daulah is also a mausoleum, just like the Taj Mahal, which is often referred to as ‘Baby Taj’ or ‘a draft of the Taj’ because of their similar architecture and design.

It too is made of white marble and has beautifully carved walls, jewelled with semi-precious stones. It is also called ‘jewel box’ because of the semi-precious stones its walls are laden with. It is the first Mughal monument to be made up from white marble.

Itimad-Ud-Daulah was the title of Mirza Ghiyas Beg who was Nur Jahan’s father. Nur Jahan was Emperor Jahangir’s wife and was the one who got the mausoleum built.

It is a place that not many people are able to reach and thus, remains largely unexplored. With a lesser crowd and a more enchanting history, it is definitely a must visit in our day trip.

5. Fatehpur Sikri, Agra

One Day Agra and Fatehpur Sikri Sightseeing Trip by Car Fatehpur Sikri

  • Plan to Depart by : 3:45 PM
  • What Not To Miss: Jal Mahal, Baoli, Jami masjid, Buland-Darwaza,Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti, Khas Mahal, Shahi Bazar, Mina Bazar, The Panch Mahal, Khwabgah, Diwan-i-Khas, Anup-Talao, Chaupar and Diwan-i-Am.
  • Timings: Sunrise to Sunset
  • Entry Fee: Rs. 40/- per head (free for children below the age of 15)
  • Website: Fatehpur Sikri, Agra

It is the third UNESCO World Heritage site of Uttar Pradesh.

Fatehpur Sikri is a pre-historic city which has supported many civilisations through the ages. It is located beside a lake, which has now almost dried up. Many artefacts from different historical ages have been found at the site.

Fatehpur Sikri has also been a Mughal site of great significance to the Mughal Empire, under the rule of Emperor Akbar, who lived here for 13 years after the birth of his son, Salim, who later came to be known as Jahangir, the fourth Emperor of the Mughal Dynasty.

It came to be known as Sikri with the advent of Emperor Babur, who founded here a garden and Jal Mahal, surrounded by the lake’s water. The site was later extensively developed into the first planned Mughal city.

It had a good drainage and water supply system, which indicates good town planning of the Mughals. It has palaces built in red sand stone and is a site that shows perfect amalgamation of Indo Islamic architecture and culture.

This wonderful one day tour around 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites should definitely be on your bucket list. Fatehpur Sikri in India: The Complete Guide

The Abandoned Capital of Emperor Akbar

agra fatehpur sikri tour itinerary

Tim Makins/Getty Images

A red sandstone city that was once the extravagant capital of the Mughal Empire in the 16th century, Fatehpur Sikri now stands deserted as a well-preserved ghost town . It was mysteriously abandoned not long after it was established but remains as one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture in India. This Fatehpur Sikri guide will help you plan your trip there.

Emperor Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri to honor the revered Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti, who lived in Sikri village. Apparently, Akbar visited the saint to seek his blessing, as he longed to have a son and heir. The saint assured him it would happen. Not long afterward, his son was born in 1569. Akbar was overjoyed and named him Salim after the saint. (Although Salim had a turbulent relationship with his father, he went on to be India's fourth Mughal Emperor, known as Jahangir. He was a very succcessful and amicable ruler who consoldiated the Mughal Empire). Following his son's birth, Akbar constructed a grand mosque near the saint's dwelling as well.

Akbar decided to relocate his capital from Agra Fort to Fatehpur Sikri. In 1571, he commenced work on the lavish walled city and palace complex, where he lived with his wives and son. He added the mosque's main entry gate, the immense Buland Darwaza (Gate of Magnificence), in 1575 after his conquest of Gujarat. He also named the city Fatehpur, derived from the Persian word fatah , meaning victory. The city was completed in 1585. Not long after, Akbar went to Lahore to deal with impending invasions. When he returned in 1601, it was to Agra. Scarcity of water at Fatehpur Sikri is commonly stated as the reason why. However, according to some, Akbar lost interest in the city after establishing it on a whim. Plus, the saint was no longer alive.

By 1610, Fatehpur Sikri was apparently deserted and in ruins.

Approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Agra , in Uttar Pradesh.

How to Visit Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri is a popular day trip from Agra . Expect to pay around 1,800 rupees upwards for a taxi based on vehicle size. Alternatively, you can travel by bus for about 50 rupees return. Agra Magic runs a private three-hour tour to Fatehpur Sikri. Uttar Pradesh Tourism also conducts half day and full-day tours to Fatehpur Sikri. (The full-day tours include Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal).

The best time to visit Fatehpur Sikri is during the cooler dry weather from November to March. It's open from sunrise until sunset. Aim to go early in the morning when it's less crowded and quieter.

Fatehpur Sikri is made up of two different parts -- the mosque and palace complex -- surrounded by a fortification wall. Visitors require a ticket for the palace complex but not the mosque. The cost is 610 rupees for foreigners and 50 rupees for Indians. Entry is free for children aged 15 years and under. Tickets can be purchased at the entry to the palace complex or online here.

What to See

Buland Darwaza, at the entrance to Jama Masjid (mosque), is claimed to be the tallest gateway in the world. Behind this extraordinary carved gate is the white marble tomb of Sufi saint Salim Chishti.

To the right is the palace complex and its Jodha Bhai gate -- one of the two entry gates. The main gate, Diwan-e-Am, is further along. There's also a free Archaeological Museum near it that's open daily from 9.00 am to 5.00 p.m. except Fridays (closed).

The palace's architecture is an exquisite blend of Isamic and Hindu influences. The residence of Akbar's principal wife, Jodha Bai, is the most elaborate structure in the complex. The Diwan-e-Khas (Hall of Private Audiences) features a single pillar (the Lotus Throne pillar) that's believed to have supported Akbar's throne. Other notable buildings include the five-storied Panch Mahal (the recreation quarters of the royal women), Daulat Khana-I-Khas (Akbar's private chambers), the Ankh Micholi Treasury, and an ornamental pond.

Another attraction that's off-the-beaten-track and worth visiting is the unusual Hiran Minar. To reach this spiky tower, walk down the steep stone path through the palace complex's Elephant Gate. Ask your guide to take you there. Some people say that Akbar used to watch antelope ( hiran ) from the top of the tower. Others say it was built over the tomb of Akbar's favorite elephant named Hiran, which executed people by walking over them and crushing their chests. It's encrusted with stone elephant tusks.

What to Keep in Mind: Dangers and Annoyances

Fatehpur Sikri is unfortunately dominated by the multitude of hawkers, beggars, and touts that roam uncontrolled. Prepare to be very persistently and aggressively harassed from the moment you arrive. This is not the time to appear friendly. Rather, ignore them or be as assertive as you have to be to get rid of them. Otherwise, they will pursue you relentlessly and extract as much money from you as possible. The problem has reached such a level that many tour companies are no longer including Fatehpur Sikri on their itineraries. Even more concerning, two Swiss tourists were severely injured by a group of local youths at Fatehpur Sikri in October 2017.

When coming from Agra or Jaipur , you'll most likely enter Fatehpur Sikri through Agra Gate (although there is a lesser-used rear gate). Vehicles are required to park in the car park near the entrance. It's situated about a kilometer (0.6 miles) away from the sites. A government shuttle bus, costing 10 rupees per person one way, transports visitors to the palace complex. The buses run in two different directions, to the Diwan-e-Am and Jodha Bhai entry gates. If you're feeling energetic and it's not too hot, you can walk.

Touts in the car park will invariably try to entice you to take a costly auto-rickshaw, or insist you visit the mosque part first. It's also guaranteed you'll be approached by fake tourist guides, many of them young children. The fake guides are most active around the road leading to Buland Darwaza and Jama Masjid. The mosque, in particular, is overrun with hawkers, beggars, pickpockets, and touts as it is free to enter.

Licensed guides are available in front of the ticket counter at the Diwan-e-Am gate. Take a guide from there only, or get your travel agent (if you have one) to arrange for a guide to meet you in the car park. Don't be misled by the fake guides elsewhere.

You'll need to take your shoes off to enter Buland Darwaza (you can carry them with you). Unfortunately, the area is dirty and not well maintained. Watch out for the people who will approach you an insist that you buy a piece of cloth, said to bring good luck, to put over the tomb when you visit. The quoted price may be as much as 1,000 rupees! However, the cloth will be taken away and resold to the next gullible tourist soon after you've laid it.

Where to Stay

Accommodations are limited at Fatehpur Sikri, so it's a good idea to stay in Agra . However, if you want to be close to the site, your best bet is Goverdhan Tourist Complex. It's a basic but clean place with friendly staff and hot water. Prices range from about 1,200 rupees to 1,700 rupees per night for a double, including tax, depending on the type of room.

What Else to Do Nearby

Alternatively, you can stay in Bharatpur, 25 minutes away, and check out the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary (also known as Keoladeo Ghana National Park) there. It's one of the top places for bird watching in India.

Stop at Korai Village on the way to Fatehpur Sikri from Agra for an authentic Indian village experience.

How Many Days For Agra?

If you want to visit all famous destinations with ease then 2 days are sufficient. However, if you only want to see the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort, you can do so in a single day.

I strongly advise you to spend at least two days in Agra to learn about the city’s culture and history, as well as to spend a bit more time inside the Taj Mahal.

Note:- I’m assuming you reach Agra in the afternoon.

Things to do in Agra

Agra itinerary day 1.

Agra Red fort entry gate with some people around, this is one of the best this to do in Agra.

The Red Fort, located 2 kilometres from the Taj Mahal, was constructed between 1565 and 1573. This magnificent structure is made of red sandstone and is a Unesco World Heritage site.

This grand structure is a symbol of the Mughal reign in India and remains one of their most important monuments to this day. The Fort contains magnificent palaces made of white marble and red sandstone, and also offers a stunning view of the Taj Mahal.

Inside the red fort, you’ll find Jahangir Mahal, Macchi Bhawan, Diwan-I-Am, Kas Mahal, and Diwan-I-Khas. For me, Jahangir Mahal is the most beautiful two-story building in the fort, because of its excellent carving and architecture.

Timing : 6 AM to 6 PM.

Duration of Visit : 1:30 Hours

Next Destination : 4 kilometres, Walking takes 50 minutes and taking a taxi or auto rickshaw (tuk tuk) takes 10 minutes.

Baby Taj /Itimad-ud-Daulah

Baby Taj/ Itimad-ud-Daulah in Agra. Include this in your 2 days Agra itinerary.

Itimad-ud-Daulah is Mirza Ghiyas Beg’s tomb, also known as the Baby Taj due to its small size and white marble construction. Furthermore, this is the first Mughal monument constructed of white marble rather than red sandstone.

The Baby Taj’s walls is made of white marble with semi-precious stone decoration. As a result, the monument is also known as a box of jewels. The carving and painting on the wall were the most appealing aspects of the mausoleum to me.

This magnificent structure was built before the Taj Mahal between 1622 and 1628, and it is believed that the Taj Mahal was influenced by Baby Taj. So don’t forget to include this unique structure in your two-day Agra itinerary.

Timing :- 6 AM to 6 PM.

Duration of Visit: 30 Minutes

Next Destination :- 2.5 kilometres, Walking takes 30 minutes and taking a taxi or Auto Rickshaw (tuk tuk) takes 8 minutes.

Mehtab Bagh

Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bag Agra.

Mahtab Bagh is a garden complex located on the other side of the river from the Taj Mahal. In the evening, The Garden is an excellent place to enjoy the Taj Mahal’s breathtaking view in the evening..

The incredible view of the Taj Mahal from garden astounded me, and seeing the Taj domes change colour as the sun set was mesmerising. If you are a photographer or enjoy taking stunning photographs, you will adore this location.

Mahtab Bagh also includes fountains, pools, sandstone domes, and a large pond. This is the best place to spend some time observing the Taj Mahal.

Timing : 6 AM to 6 PM

Duration of Visit: 1 Hour

Agra Itinerary Day 2

Taj Mahal With lot of People around. One of the best thing to do in Agra.

The Taj Mahal is not only an architectural wonder but also an enduring symbol of eternal love. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan between 1632 and 1653 to house the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. This stunning monument took 21 years to complete, with the help of over 20,000 workers.

The structure is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, made from marble and red sandstone with inlay work in semi-precious stones. Not only that, but the monument is one of the world’s wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Also, this is the most beautiful masterpiece built by the Mughals.

Most first-time visitors to India include this incredibly beautiful masterpiece on their itinerary. The Taj Mahal attracts more than two million visitors each year through its doors.

Inside the Taj Mahal, you will see a completely beautiful carving and colourful flowers made of semi-precious stone.

Flower decoration made of marble Inside Taj Mahal.

I’ve visited the monument several times and never get tired of it; every time I saw Taj for the first time was a wow moment. I recommend going early in the morning because it looks stunning.

Note :- You are not allowed to carry: smoking items, tobacco products, liquor, eatables (Toffees), headphones, knives, wire, mobile charger, extra battery, electric goods (except camera), Arms, ammunition, fire, and tripods are also prohibited.

Inside the Taj Mahal, eating and smoking are strictly prohibited, and large bags and books may cause the security check to take longer. So keep with you only your mobile, camera, and passport, along with money and water.

Timing :- 6 AM to 6 PM. Friday close .

Duration of Visit: 2 Hours.

Next Destination : 15 kilometres, 40 minutes by taxi.

Akbar Tomb ( Sikandra)

Beautifully Decorated Akbar Tomb or Sikandra Entrance door. 2 days in Agra Itinerary.

Akbar’s tomb, also known as Sikandra, is a beautiful Mughal Emperor Akbar’s tomb located approximately 13 kilometres from Agra. And constructed between 1605 and 1613. Akbar built this tomb by himself but died before it was completed. The mausoleum was completed by his son Jahangir.

This is one of Agra’s most popular tourist attractions, with over 4 million visitors each year.

The entrance gate to the tomb is brilliantly decorated with white marble and red sandstone, and ceiling is beautifully designed with floral and geometric patterns in white and coloured marble.

The monument was built entirely of sandstone and marble. In addition, surrounded by a lovely garden. Akbar’s tomb is one of the best things to include in your 2 days Agra Itinerary.

Timing: 6 AM to 6 PM. Friday Close

Duration of Visit : 45 Minutes

Next Destination : 46 kilometres, 1 hour by taxi.

Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri Complex. 2 Days in Agra Itinerary

Fatehpur Sikri, situated 40 km from Agra, is the largest palace complex in India and was constructed in 1571 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great. They call it “the city of victory”.

The town used to be the capital of the Mughal Empire, but it was abandoned after only a decade. Because of a lack of water and being forgotten for hundreds of years.

This city is now one of the most magnificent ghost cities in the world and a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Architecture example of Fatehpur Sikri Agra.

Fatehpur Sikri complex includes Jodha Bai Palace, Panch Mahal, Diwan-e-Khas, Diwan-e-Aam, the Archeological Museum, and many other structures. it’s filled with architectural beauty and stunning carvings.

For me, the most interesting aspect of this monument was that Akbar built three separate places for his favourite wives: one Hindu, one Muslim, and one Christian.

Buland Darwaza in Fatehpur Sikri Masjid.

Fatehpur Sikri also has one of the largest mosques in India, and the Buland Darwaza (entrance door of the mosque) is the most impressive part of the mosque.

Note: Please keep in mind that you must remove your shoes before entering the masjid.

You can either keep your shoes in your bag or there are people who will look after your shoes for a fee.

Prepare yourself both outside the Fatehpuri complex and inside the Jama Masjid. Many people or children will approach you and ask for money.

Timing : 6AM  to 6 PM.

How to Reach Fatehpur Sikri

If you only have two days in Agra, taking a taxi to Fatehpur Sikri is the best option. I would recommend that you hire a taxi for the entire second day and begin with the Taj, then Akbar’s tomb, then Fatehpur Sikri, once you arrive at the Fatehpur Sikri Parking.

To get to the Masjid and the complex area, you’ll need to take a minibus. The bus ride to the attraction will take about 10 minutes. The bus service is free, but you can give the conductor some money if you want.

Map of Agra Attractions

To make your travel planning easier, this map includes all of the tourist attractions mentioned in this two-day Agra itinerary. The blue pointer represents Day One, and the green pointer represents Day Two.

What If You Have Only One Day in Agra

If you only have one day in Agra or arrive by morning train from Delhi, then you can visit these places.

Baby Taj /Itimad-ud-Daulah.

When Is The Best Time to Visit Agra

The weather in Agra is extremely unstable, with cold winters and hot summers. The best time to visit is from October to March, when the weather is cool and pleasant.

However, if you want to visit Taj without crowds and save money, you can do so during the summer months of April to June, when temperatures range from 40°C to 48°C, and in the rainy season from July to August, when temperatures can range from 30°C to 35°C.

How To Reach Agra from Delhi

Agra is easily accessible by bus, train, or taxi. The train is, in my opinion, the best way to get to Agra. There are several trains that run from Delhi to Agra. The quickest one takes about 90 minutes to get there. The following are the best trains to take to get to Agra.

Gatimaan Express from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station at 8:10 ( Duration 1h 45m)

New Delhi Habibganj Shatabdi Express from New Delhi railway station at 6:00 AM (Duration 1h 55m)

Taj Express from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station at 7:06 AM. (Duration 2h 30m)

I recommend that you book your train ticket in advance. Two to three months in advance is the ideal time frame. Reservations for international travellers can be made through 12Go Asia . This is an easy and risk-free website for booking your train ticket.

The bus is the cheapest way to get to Agra, but it takes the longest, around 4 to 5 hours. Fares for buses and trains differ slightly. So I recommend taking the train, but if you have to take the bus because the train is full, you can book tickets on the RedBus website.

Book only Deluxe or Super Deluxe buses because regular buses take longer to arrive and stop more frequently.

Agra by taxi is the most convenient and hassle-free way to get to Agra. If you prefer the simplest mode of transportation, this is the best option for you. Your hotel can arrange a taxi for you and provide you with all the travel information.

Where to Stay

Hotel Amer on Fatehabad Road, where I quite often stayed with my Polish group.  I had a great time at this hotel because the rooms were clean and comfortable, and the food was delicious. The hotel has a pool, but I never use it.

How to Get Around in Agra

Taxis and auto-rickshaws (tuk-tuks) are the best ways to get around in Agra. You can easily book an Auto Rickshaw or a taxi using the Uber or Ola App, or you can check the price on the app first to get an idea of how much you should pay to book an auto rickshaw without using an app.

I would recommend booking a taxi for the entire second day because Fatehpur Sikri is 40 kilometres away, and taking a taxi to all of the spots will be the most convenient option.

What to Eat in Agra

It is highly recommended to visit the Prem Mandir during the evening to witness its impressive visual light effects. It can easily be termed as one of the most beautiful temples of Modern India.

I was way young when I did the exactly tour with my parents, of course my parents too me to these places. And the itinerary looked pretty same. You just refreshed my memories. Somehow I do not have pictures to look at. Could relate to the pictures you posted here.

Thanks for sharing a detailed guide on Agra-Mathura-Vrindavan tour as many of tourists visit these places in North India. As these places are very popular but it is very difficult to plan what to see first and how to go from one city to another. But thankfully you have covered all these useful tips in your blog. I have been to Mathura and Vrindavan but not Agra and very soon planning for it.

I have been to Taj Mahal once and we were unlucky because the entire morning Taj Mahal was closed for some reason so all the visitor had to wait to the afternoon and it was crowded!

I wish we would have visit Mathura and Vrindavan as it looks as these places as a lot to offer! Thank you for a detailed guide of these places, very helpful!

I did this tour last year and had an amazing time. I was still very happy to read this article as it brought back a lot of amazing memories. Your pictures look amazing too! Thank you for sharing this lovely article.

I did not realise that Mathura and Vrindavan are so close to Agra, only 60 kms ahead! I visited those cities when I was a little child and don’t remember much from my trip except that my grandparents took me to several temples while we were there! Agra, however, was a more recent trip for me so I have to agree with Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri being the top 3 places to visit there.

I’ve always wanted to visit Agra because of the Taj Mahal! You’ve also given me enough inspiration to make it a worthwhile trek out of New Delhi to see. I think the fort would be a great historical aspect to understand Agra and the surrounding region and I love the temples that you included!

You will not believe how helpful this post is to us. I have a few friends coming in from US and wanted to cover Taj Mahal and a few places nearby and had asked me to draw up a plan for them. Now I can just ask them to see this post! Thanks for this 🙂

That’s awesome! I am sure they are going to have a great time 🙂

Its been a bit over a decade since I went on this trip. It was a super memorable one coz we took a day and half train from Chennai to Delhi! It was indeed super fun. Yeah, I did one of those coach tours from Delhi to Agra, Mathura & Vrindavan. We went to Fatehpur Sikri by ourselves later. Nostalgic…..

I have visit Mathura and Vrindavan these are amazing holy places in India. Agra is very nice too because of famous Taj Mahal and fatehpur sikri.

To be honest, never thought that the Agra area is that large. It needs two days, that is good to know.

Agra and Brindavan are my favortie places. I love the serenity and the beautiful buildings around this place. I think I’ll explore these places one more time.

Nice coverage of the place, Very informative blog and suggestion for travelers. I really like to this blog its very interesting and informative. Thanks for your amazing travel guide and your photos are mind-blowing.

Agra Itinerary – 2 Days Of World Famous Sights

Last updated: 24th February 2024

agra fatehpur sikri tour itinerary

Agra was the city we were most excited about  visiting   on our grand tour of India . Why? because it’s home of  the  world’s most famous building – the Taj Mahal. And yes, we can tell you  no matter how many times you’ve seen it in pictures, nothing does it justice as seeing it for real. In this Agra itinerary we’ll show you  how to see the Taj Mahal plus all the other famous places of Agra in 2 days.

Table of Contents

Day 1 – Agra Itinerary

Arrive by train to agra cannt.

We caught an early morning sleeper train from Jaipur to Agra and arrived into the city’s Agra Cantt station at lunchtime. After a quick lunch and freshen up we were super excited to be off on our 1st day of sightseeing in Agra.

I’timād-ud-Daulah – The Baby Taj

As we set off from our hotel, our first impression of Agra is that it’s a big ugly modern city. Many roads don’t have pavements instead just mud paths, however things did improve greatly as we got close to our first stop, the I’timād-ud-Daulah. Built in 1614 this lavish 17th century mausoleum is set in a beautiful garden, it contains the tomb of I’timād-ud-Daulah. He was the father of the Emperor’s wife and his children served as generals of the Mughal Emperors. Some people describe the building as a ‘jewellery box’  because of the gemstones inside the tomb chamber .  We thought ‘Baby Taj’ was more appropriate as it does resemble the Taj Mahal. It’s ornate and very pretty, made entirely of white marble with accents of red marble. Garth loved all the elaborate latticework and marble geometric tile designs. It’s done using inlay techniques called ‘pietra dura ‘  – the decorative art of cutting and polishing stones, putting them together to create beautiful images and patterns.

Taj Mahal at Sunset from Mehtab Bagh

In the early evening we were absolutely thrilled and giddy to go watch the sunset over India’s most famous attraction and possibly the world’s most famous building – the iconic Taj Mahal. Would it be worth the hype and our long journey from the UK to see it for the very first time? We arrived at Mehtab Bagh – a lovely green park opposite the Taj Mahal next to the Yamuna River.

As we entered the park we had butterflies in our stomachs, just like we did when we approached Angkor Wat in Cambodia . We caught our first glimpse of the Taj Mahal poking through the trees and we were mesmerised! As we got closer, our first reaction was that it was much bigger than we imagined it to be, especially the large ‘onion dome’.  It was one of those surreal ‘pinch yourself’ moments where we were stood opposite something that felt so familiar. We sat with lots of other people for a few hours watching the colour change on the marble domes and minarets as the sun disappeared. It felt magical and an epic moment of our trip, because it was. Mehtab Bagh is a peaceful place to view the Taj Mahal without the crowds.

Built on the banks of the Yamuna River the Taj Mahal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a true wonder of the modern world. The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his late wife Mumtaz Mahal. The Emperor had 3 wives but Mumtaz was his favourite who died while giving birth to their 14th child. The Taj Mahal symbolises their great love for each other.

The Taj Mahal was built between 1631 and 1648. Working day and night it took over 20,000 skilled craftsmen and over 1,000 elephants (to transport building materials) 22 years to complete. The Indo-Islamic architecture has perfect symmetry and this white marble masterpiece is considered by many people to be the most beautiful building in the world. The design is very similar to the Humayun’s Tomb we visited in Delhi . A clever design fact – the 4 minaret towers tilt outwards by 2 degrees, built so they fall away from the mausoleum in the event of an earthquake.

What’s really interesting about the Mehtab Bagh park is that another Taj Mahal was going to be built here.  The foundations were laid which we saw, but it was never finished. It was going to a mirror image of the Taj Mahal built in black marble containing the tomb of Emperor Shah Jahan so he could the look across the river to his wife, Mumtaz in the white Taj Mahal. However before Emperor Shah Jahan died he was put in prison by his son! perhaps because black marble costs 10 x more than white marble?

Day 2 – Agra Itinerary

Taj mahal at sunrise (in the fog).

Day 2 of our Agra itinerary starts with an early morning wake up call. Before we knew it blurry eyed we were off in a tuk-tuk back to see the Taj Mahal at sunrise to beat the huge crowds. Even thought we’re not morning people this was a once in a lifetime opportunity we weren’t going to miss. It was incredibly cold and foggy but very atmospheric. At 5.40am we arrived at the entrance to be first in the queue and we were!  All we could hear were the sounds of dogs howling in sync to the call to prayer.

First in the queue for the Taj Mahal at 5.40am

First in the queue at 5.40am

At 6am the doors opened for security which is understandably very tight. There’s lots of banned items you can’t take inside the Taj Mahal. Anything sharp that could damage the Taj, no chemicals including hand sanitiser, no food, no books, no selfie sticks, no power banks, no tripods, no extra batteries. So try to take as little as possible as you’ll get through much quicker. Garth had the rucksack with just our camera, passports, a spare memory card and a small water bottle. Phil didn’t have anything and was waived through.

Video cameras are not allowed, however you can use a video camera on the step just inside the main gate after that you must leave your video camera in locker at cost of 25INR. One member of our small group tour had a camcorder that had to be placed in a locker, such a weird rule because they allow DSLR cameras and mobile phones that can take video, which everyone was doing. The rules change regularly according to our guide, so worth double checking out the Taj Mahal’s  official website for the latest restrictions.

Our local guide was Didi Khan took us towards the North gate entrance which is the main gate. As we walked through the entrance our hearts sunk as the Taj Mahal was completely covered by fog. We could hardly see our hands in front of our face! but we did get very fleeting glimpses of the main dome and minaret towers. It was incredibly disappointing but hey we’ve had plenty of experiences when travelling where we got unlucky with the weather like when we tried to see one of the world’s biggest buddha statue in Hong Kong . The tickets allow you 3 hours at the Taj, so we were optimistic the fog might lift. Whatever happened we knew we would be able to go inside the tomb chamber without the effects of the unfortunate weather.

The ‘Diana Bench’

Despite the fog the biggest queue for photos was at the ‘Diana Bench’ as our guide called it. Remember the photo when Princess Diana sat in solitude in 1992? Well we can tell you that everyone has got it wrong, even our guide Didi. The actual ‘Diana Bench’ is the one behind our heads, it’s the one closest to the Taj Mahal.

Outside the Taj Mahal Tomb on the Upper Terrace

After putting on our protective shoe covers we were allowed up-close on the upper terrace (there’s an additional fee for this on top of the main ticket price, go for the ‘high value’ ticket for the shortest queues) . It’s even more beautiful up here as we could see and appreciate the intricacy of all the stone inlay details. Hundreds of precious stones have been carved to create designs of roses and poppies using the same ‘pietra dura’ inlay technique we saw at the Baby Taj. The Arabic calligraphy on the entrance is a verse from the Quran and is actually an optical illusion. Look closely and the type gets bigger in size towards the top. Sadly we could tell the fog wasn’t going to lift 🙁 it was too thick, but it did give the mausoleum an added ethereal quality.

Inside The Tomb Chamber

The ivory white walls continue as we walked inside the tomb chamber. There was a lovely perfume smell from smoldering incense, outside it smells of smoke from people burning rubbish which is very common in India. Inside it’s incredibly beautiful, the caskets of Mumtaz Mahal and Emperor Shah Jahan are now replicas, the real ones are below ground. Surrounding the caskets is a stunning lattice wall with of lotus and jasmine flower patterns. Photography is not allowed inside so we can’t share any pictures.

A security guard demonstrated the translucency of the coloured glass within the lotus and jasmine flowers close-up using a torch. As he shined his light the flower petals came to life with colour and shapes of the cut glass. We were so impressed we decided to go around again, this time a different security guard offered to show off the acoustics of the chamber. He asked us in turn what our wives names were called, we didn’t like to cause a scene so played along using family names. It was brilliant as we heard the echoes fade away over time of Garth’s mum’s name. “Tip please!” we were then asked, which slightly spoilt the magic!

Garden Design, Mosque & Guest House

The landscaped gardens are just as beautiful, from what we could see! 4 channels of water symbolise the 4 rivers of life – milk, water, wine and honey.  They flow to a central point, dividing the garden into 4 equal squares. This symbolises paradise and is a common feature of Islamic garden design. The long water channels are lined with cypress trees which symbolise life and eternity. On each side of the Taj Mahal are 2 red sandstone buildings – a mosque and a former guest house called Mehmaan Khana which is now empty.

Our Foggy Taj Mahal Experience!

So our experience of seeing the Taj Mahal at sunrise didn’t go quite to plan, however we were grateful we had seen it the day before. Fog is common in December and January at sunrise, so it would be wise to book a couple of nights in Agra during these months for a second go at sunrise  (FYI – The fog lifted by 2pm).  Finally when you leave the Taj Mahal exit be prepared for everyone wanting to sell you something. There’s lots of hawkers and souvenir shops. We also saw 10 people begging at tourist mini bus windows asking for money.

Sadly air pollution from neighbouring industries is damaging the white marble and turning it yellow. The pollution is putting the Taj Mahal under threat of short term closure added to that over 7 million people visit each year, so tourism officials continue to consider how to protect its future. We’re so glad we got the opportunity to visit, it’s exquisite and somewhere we’ll never forget and a huge bucket list tick!

Fatehpur Sikri

Getting there.

From the Taj Mahal we returned back to our hotel for a hearty Indian breakfast and then set off again in the morning for Fatehpur Sikri. The traffic out of Agra was like a video game with tuk-tuks, cars and motorbikes weaving in and out. The journey takes about an hour and passes through some nice countryside. It’s certainly not boring when there’s so much life and unusual sights to see right on the streets.

About Fatehpur Sikri

The  UNESCO World Heritage listed Fatehpur Sikri was built in 1571 by Emperor Akbar as the capital city of the Mughal Empire. However due to a lack of water it was abandoned by Emperor Akbar in 1585, just a decade after it was built. Fatehpur Sikri was completely abandoned by 1610 and remained a ghost town for hundreds of years.

Inside the complex is impressive because the monuments and temples are in very good condition. It’s off the beaten path, but well worth a visit especially because the crowds here are small. The buildings use a mix of Islamic and Persian architecture. Emperor Akbar built 3 palaces for each one of his wives. Fatehpur Sikri also includes one of the largest mosques in India – the Jama Masjid which has an enormous entrance gate called the ‘Bulandh Darwaza’.

Be prepared for people everywhere outside asking for money and even inside the complex. The gardeners and restoration craftsmen asked us “where are you guys from?” you can guess what’s coming next …

The last sight on our Agra itinerary for day 2 was another big one – Agra Fort and another  UNESCO World Heritage Site . Built in 1565 as a military base it was later converted into a palace, and it’s one of the best preserved forts in India . It used to be the Royal home to three reigns of Mughal Emperors until they moved the capital city in 1638 from Agra to the Red Fort in Delhi.

Agra Fort is a sprawling complex built from red sandstone and marble. A walled city surrounded by a moat on three sides and a river on the forth side, the defence walls are double thick and 20 metres high. Inside it’s like a maze with palaces, courtyards, halls and gardens spread out over 94 acres. Many of the original buildings were destroyed by the British army between 1803 to 1862 to build barracks. That area of the fort is still used by the Indian Army and is off limits to the public.

You really need to hire an official guide like we had (available outside the main gate) to appreciate the stories behind the various buildings. We loved all the architectural details, Garth liked the jigsaw puzzle patterns of the Anguri Bagh garden and Phil loved all the decorative arches which are a a feature of Islamic architecture. The view across the distance to the Taj Mahal is also impressive.

Overnight Train to Allahabad

We finished at 6.30pm at Agra Fort and headed back to the hotel to get ready to catch our overnight sleeper train to Allahabad at 9.15pm. It was a full on day but full of some wonderful sights, but we were ready to go. Agra itself lacks the charm of cities like Udaipur , we thought we wouldn’t want to spend too long here because of the pollution and the constant hassle from hard selling hawkers.

Other Attractions and Things To Do In Agra

  • Shahi Jama Masjid – Huge mosque opposite Agra Fort. It can accommodate 25,000 people for prayers.
  • Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra  – 6 miles from Agra, a mausoleum to the greatest of the Mughal kings – Emperor Akbar.
  • Mariam’s Tomb – Tomb for Mariam-uz-Zamani, a wife of Emperor Akbar.
  • The Taj Nature Walk – Nature reserve trail with viewpoints of the Taj Mahal.
