Three amazing dog-friendly road trips in California
Dog-friendly road trip: yosemite to mammoth lakes.
Starting your journey in Yosemite National Park , you’ll be greeted with towering granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and some of the most iconic views in the country. While many trails in Yosemite aren’t pet-friendly, the Wawona Meadow Loop offers a serene and accessible hike for you and your dog. The Bridalveil Fall walkway , with its misty spray, is another great spot for a leashed walk.
Leaving Yosemite, head east on Highway 120 towards Mono Lake . This ancient, saline lake, with its otherworldly tufa towers, makes for a fascinating stop. Wander through the eerie formations at the South Tufa area, where dogs on leash are welcome. Continuing south, take the June Lake Loop for a scenic drive, complete with crystal-clear lakes perfect for a picnic or a swim. The Parker Lake Trail offers a moderate hike with rewarding views.
Finally, arrive in Mammoth Lakes. Here, trails like the Convict Lake Loop and Horseshoe Lake Trail offer varied landscapes and breathtaking scenery. Don’t miss the gondola ride up Mammoth Mountain for panoramic views that will leave both you and your dog in awe.Well-behaved dogs are welcome on the gondola in the summer months.
Dog-friendly road trip: Jenner to Leggett via Highway 1
Begin your coastal adventure in the charming town of Jenner , where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean. Start with a visit to Cafe Aquatica , known for its dog-friendly deck and occasional live music, providing a delightful atmosphere for both you and your furry friend. Your pup is welcome to join you at a table on their lawn or covered deck. Jenner offers a picturesque setting with its stunning coastal views, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
Head over to Goat Rock Beach , where certain areas allow dogs—be sure to read the signs to stay in designated dog-friendly zones. The beach is a great spot for your pup to frolic in the surf. For a more extensive outdoor experience, explore the Jenner Headlands Preserve . While dogs must be kept on a leash and are restricted from certain trails, the preserve offers breathtaking hikes with panoramic views. As travelers head north along California’s coast, Point Arena offers a variety of dog-friendly activities and accommodations. The Point Arena Lighthouse welcomes pets, providing scenic views and comfortable amenities. The nearby Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands feature trails perfect for exploring with your dog, offering stunning coastal vistas.
Just south of Mendocino Village , known for its role in “Murder She Wrote,” the Little River Inn stands out for its pet-friendly amenities, including designated dining areas for guests with dogs. This charming inn also features a nine-hole golf course, tennis facilities, .
In Mendocino itself, the Stanford Inn and its Ravens Restaurant are incredibly dog-friendly. The Stanford Inn offers pet-friendly rooms and welcomes dogs throughout the property, including the Ravens Restaurant , which serves plant-based cuisine and provides a dedicated area for diners with pets.
The Mendocino Coast offers dramatic cliffs and serene beaches. The Mendocino Headlands State Park is ideal for a dog-friendly hike along the bluffs, where you can take in the sweeping ocean views.
Heading north from Mendocino Village to the dog-friendly town of Fort Bragg offers a delightful range of activities for you and your canine companion. Fort Bragg is known for its affordable beachside hotels and great seafood, making it an excellent stop for travelers with pets.
Dog-friendly activities in Fort Bragg include visits to several beaches where your dog can roam off-leash, such as Noyo Beach, which is located where the Noyo River meets the Pacific Ocean . Another popular spot is Glass Beach, part of MacKerricher State Park, known for its colorful sea glass and stunning coastal views.
For a unique experience, you can take your dog on the historic Skunk Train, a scenic ride through the redwoods that welcomes well-behaved, leashed dogs. Additionally, the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens allow dogs on leashes, providing a beautiful and tranquil environment for both you and your pet to enjoy.
Fort Bragg also features the Fort Bragg Dog Park, where dogs can socialize and play off-leash in a safe, fenced area. These attractions, combined with the town’s dog-friendly atmosphere, make Fort Bragg an ideal destination for travelers with dogs.
Your final destination is Leggett, home to the iconic Chandelier Tree . This towering coastal redwood has a unique tunnel carved through its base, allowing you to drive through and create a memorable photo op with your furry friend.
Dog-friendly road trip: Redding to Mount Shasta
Start your northern California road trip in Redding , where the Sundial Bridge offers a striking architectural landmark and a scenic start to your journey. Cross the bridge and explore the trails of Turtle Bay Exploration Park, where leashed dogs are welcome.
Heading west on Highway 299, make your way to Whiskeytown National Recreation Area . This beautiful reservoir, surrounded by forested hills, offers dog-friendly trails and refreshing water activities. A swim in the clear waters is a great way for both you and your pup to cool off.
Continue northeast to McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. The majestic Burney Falls , cascading 129 feet into a mist-filled basin, is a sight to behold. Dogs are allowed on leash in the park, and a walk around the falls offers breathtaking views.
Conclude your journey at Mount Shasta , where the towering peak dominates the skyline. Hike the Black Butte Trail for panoramic views of the surrounding area, and spend some quiet moments by the serene waters of Lake Siskiyou. This mystical mountain region, with its crisp air and pristine beauty, is the perfect place to wrap up your adventure.

7 Super Dog-Friendly Destinations in California
This post contains affiliate links , which means that at no additional cost to you if you click on one of the product links, we may earn a commission.
We are both dog moms and are always looking for pet-friendly destinations. Luckily, more cities are starting to welcome dogs and we’ve explored a handful of them this past year.
Starting with our favorite, here are our top seven super pet-friendly destinations in California.
1. Mammoth Lakes
Walking towards Wild Willy’s Natural Hot Springs around sunset
Mammoth Lakes is one of the lesser-known areas in the Sierra Nevadas since Yosemite is right next door and tends to get all the fame (which we completely understand why).
Gorgeous views and water at June Lake
Spectacular sunrise at Convict Lake
We made our visit during the month of August and booked a weekend at the Sierra Nevada Resort & Spa . Mammoth Lakes was indeed pet-friendly, so we were able to enjoy all the trails, lakes, and restaurants with our fur babies.
2. Santa Barbara
Zooey and Kuma enjoying the off-leash Hendry’s Dog Beach
The four of us had a fantastic time in Santa Barbara when we made the visit during the first week of August. The mid-70-degree weather made all of our outdoor activities so pleasant and enjoyable.
Exploring Jeff Shelton’s unique architecture
The iconic Chromatic Gate in Santa Barbara
The pups especially had a great time running around Hendry’s Beach and getting showered with attention at the Funk Zone .

3. Big Bear Lake
Zooey running around at Big Bear Lake
Big Bear is a popular ski town for Angelenos, but if you aren’t keen on winter sports, there is still plenty of activities to enjoy in nature with your main furry squeeze.
Sledding with Zooey at Cougar Crest Trail
Zooey jumping around on logs
Big Bear Lake is a town that encourages visitors to bring their pups along for an adventure to enjoy the lake and many trails. We visited in February so that Zooey could experience some sledding in the snow.
4. San Diego
I used to live in San Diego and always appreciated how dog-friendly this city is. One of my favorite pooch-friendly places was Balboa Park . This park is massive and although dogs can’t roam inside the museums , there is plenty of space outdoors to enjoy along with hiking trails and cactus gardens .
In front of the Botanical Garden at Balboa Park
Another fun place is Little Italy or South Park. All these locations are very close to each other so you can easily spend a day hopping around town.
Outdoor Cafe in South Park - Communal Coffee
Little Italy San Diego - Piazza delia Famiglia
Frost me Cafe & Bakery In Little Italy
Little Italy has a gorgeous courtyard and we recommend getting some pastries with your pooch at Frost Me Cafe & Bakery . If you want to grab some coffee, stop by South Park’s Communal Coffee . You’ll love their outdoor space. And just a few blocks down is a huge off-leash dog park .
5. Carmel by the Sea
Gorgeous powdery white sands at Carmel Beach
Our first big trip together as four was to U.S.A.’s most dog-friendly town called Carmel . We drove from Los Angeles through Big Sur and about 8 hours later, we made it to our accommodation at Hofsas House Hotel .

Wine tasting with Zooey
Walking around the quaint town with Zooey
We went to a wine tasting and the pups especially loved the white sand at Carmel Dog Beach. The entire town caters to dogs so you’ll see pet stations and water bowls throughout the quaint city.
A charming Danish Village in California’s Santa Ynez Valley
When we made our initial visit to Solvang , it was just the two of us, but when we were there, we discovered it was a town that welcomed dogs. We saw so many other pooches enjoying this adorable Danish town that I promised myself to bring Zooey here someday.
Lucky Dogg Wine Tasting Room
Solvang’s famous Windmill
A little over a year later, I did just that and Zooey enjoyed every minute of it. Just like the other places on the list, dogs are most welcome at restaurants, cafes, and wine tastings. Even the tiny H.C. Andersen Museum permitted dogs.
7. Los Angeles
There are a ton of fun and free things to do in Los Angeles from off-leash parks, hiking, shopping, and playing in the snow. Some of the lesser-known dog-friendly hiking spots that we enjoy are Vasquez Rocks Natural Area and Gabrielino Trail .
Lake Hollywood Park
If your heading to Hollywood, there are plenty of dog-friendly attractions to explore in this area as well. And you can even get a photo with your pup in front of the famous Hollywood sign without having to hike to it. You can literally park your car and walk a few hundred feet and get some pretty awesome shots.
Views at Big Sur California
I’m so grateful for towns that welcome our fur babies because they love traveling just as much as we do. If you know of other dog-friendly towns in California, please comment below and let us know!

A Dog-Friendly Guide To The Central Coast
04/04/15 | California
This past winter, my friend Cathy and I drove south down California Highway 1 through Big Sur , for a weekend trip to Cambria and the Central Coast. Rather than find someone to watch our two dogs, we decided to bring them along. While it’s definitely a bit more challenging to travel with pets in tow, we knew they would enjoy the trip to the beach and we were pleased to find the Central Coast offers a lot of dog-friendly things to do.
Driving Highway 1 with your dog? Here are some of our favorite dog-friendly Central Coast hotels, restaurants, and activities. ( Never vacationed with your pet? Check out these tips for traveling with your dog .)
Dog-Friendly Hotels:
Knowing that many roadtripping travelers bring their pups along, there are actually a lot of dog-friendly hotels along the Central Coast. On this trip, Cathy and I stayed at Castle Inn , a lovingly renovated 1950’s motel on Cambria’s main coast road, Moonstone Beach Drive. They have a limited number of rooms that they allow pets in, so reserve early.
As you might guess from the address, the hotel’s location is perfect, just steps away from Cambria’s stunning Moonstone Beach. It made it easy to get out for both sunrise and sunset, and a scenic place to walk the dogs. This area includes protected wildlife habitat, so dogs must be on leash.
The room was comfortable and included some stylish, mid-century modern design elements. When we checked in, we were pleased to find staff had left each dog a plush dog bed and set of cheery red bowls.
On past trips to Cambria, I’ve stayed at a dog-friendly AirBnB rental (in the hills, a few miles from the coast), and another dog-friendly hotel downtown (near the dog park) but being such a close walk to the beach was the best choice.
Dog-Friendly Restaurants
Finding restaurants with dog-friendly outdoor patio seating, is often one of the hardest parts of traveling with dogs, but Cambria has a few delicious options.
Robin’s Restaurant offers globally inspired cuisine from a historic adobe home in downtown Cambria. Dogs are allowed in their large, covered back patio, a gorgeous space filled with flowering plants lit by twinkling white lights. We were there during San Luis Obispo restaurant week so Cathy and I got to try an eclectic mix of dishes, featuring flavors from around the world. It was a surprising mix, going from Japanese, to Italian, to Indian in the consecutive courses, but they paired well.
Butternut squash ravioli with sage and brown butter. Photo courtesy of Robin’s Restaurant–Facebook.
Indigo Moon Cafe is another great choice for dog-friendly dining on their back patio. Indigo Moon has an excellent menu featuring fresh local ingredients. They are known for their extensive wine and cheese lists, and sell cheese from a deli counter during the day.
Dog-Friendly Things To Do:
Walk on moonstone beach.
Moonstone Beach is a long, uncrowded stretch of beach, one of the prettiest on the Central Coast. The beach includes a one-mile coastal boardwalk, tide-pools, and wildlife spotting, and stunning views at any time of day. The beach is named for the tiny white translucent rocks that dot the shore, not to be confused with moonstone gems. Moonstone Beach is a great place to walk dogs, on-leash, because of the proximity to sensitive wildlife habitat.
Here are photos we took at sunrise…
Midday…
… and sunset.
Hiking Fiscalini Ranch Preserve
Fiscalini Ranch Preserve is a 430 acre protected zone on the Cambria coast. It offers habitat for many diverse wildlife species, from the coastal marshes to the adjacent pine forests. The views from the coastal bluffs over the ocean and the town of Cambria are breathtaking.
Dogs are allowed on-leash on the coastal bluff trail (above), and off-leash on the inland trails (below).
If you are looking for a place to stop and take in the view, the trails are dotted by beautifully hand-crafted benches made of windswept pieces of driftwood.
Local Pet Stores
Leave something at home, or want to buy your pup a treat? In Cambria, stop into Maddie Mae’s Pet Pantry, a tiny downtown storefront packed with quality pet food and any kind of supply you could need.
Heading south to Morro Bay, stop into Lemos Feed & Pet Supply, for pet food and supplies.
Including dog cookies…
Beer Tasting?
Stop into Cambria Beer Company . Dogs are welcome in the downtown tasting room of this downtown craft brewery.
Wine Tasting?
Stop into Moonstone Winery . Dogs are welcome in their downtown tasting room of this local winemaker.
Cambria Dog Park
This large downtown dog park is a great place to let your dog run off some energy after a polite walk through downtown. The park is loving maintained by local volunteers and includes picnic benches with colorful potted plants and a barrel full of tennis balls for the ball-driven dogs out there.
North Point Beach, Morro Bay
This is my favorite Central Coast dog beach, offering off-leash access and stunning views of Morro Rock. I shared more photos in this post: A Perfect Beach on the Central Coast.
Elephant Seal spotting at Piedras Blancas
No drive up the Central Coast is complete without stopping to observe one of California’s most interesting wildlife species. Elephant seals can weigh over 5,400 pounds and they are amazing sight, especially in winter when they come to shore by the thousands just north of San Simeon, CA to mate and give birth. On leash dogs are welcome on the coastal trail overlooking the elephant seals. Read more about elephant seals at this post: Where to See Elephant Seals in California .
Wild zebra spotting near Hearst Castle
In 1919, newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst built an extravagent personal estate on the mountain ridge overlooking San Simeon, California. The property, Hearst Castle is now managed as a California State Park and it’s one of the most popular tourist destinations on the California Coast.
In the 1930’s, Hearst started to experience financial problems, and was forced to leave his palace behind. Maintanance workers on the estate released many of the animals from his private zoo, including wild species from around the world.
Seventy-five later, there is still a small colony of zebras that has gone wild and roam the hills below Hearst Castle. You can sometimes see them on the East side of the Highway 1 when driving north. Bring binoculars, they can be hard to spot. We spotted two of them grazing the field, first thing in the morning (at about 8:30am).
Note: Dogs are not allowed at Hearst Castle and the parking lot has full day sun exposure, so if you plan to visit Hearst Castle, arrange for a petsitter to care for your dog.
Many of the downtown shops invite dogs in while you browse. Both downtown Cambria and downtown Morro Bay offer lots of options. Some of my favorite downtown shopping options were GROW , an rare and unusual succulent shop in Cambria that has an indoor/outdoor design…
…and the vintage clothing shops in Downtown Morro Bay.
After our visit, vintage store Revolve , actually posted a cute picture of our two dogs to their Facebook Page. Fun!

What an interesting journey and to have your pets along was a plus.People now realize they are part of our families.Lol????
April 10, 2015 at 10:39 am
Definitely, well-said, Marilyn 🙂 I always recommend travel destinations highlight their pet-friendly local businesses and attractions. I really enjoy bringing my dog along on local (California, for me) road trips, and it’s so much easier and cheaper than finding someone to watch her. Have you ever traveled anywhere with a pet?
April 5, 2015 at 12:08 pm
Nice post Cass! The photos are incredible! So much fun!
April 10, 2015 at 10:36 am
Had a great time with you as usual, my dear! We need to plan another trip!
April 6, 2015 at 2:20 pm
So fun! I just took Route 101 back to LA and stopped in Avila Beach for the afternoon. In terms of accommodation with the dog, I have been a really big fan of AirBnb’s. Much cheaper and usually more accommodating then hotels, for dogs.
April 9, 2015 at 7:17 pm
Nice! I didn’t get to explore Avila Beach, but I read there was an off-leash dog beach there, did you happen to stop there? Have any pics?
And we love AirBNB too, we stayed at a great one in Cambria just a mile or so from the beach, last time we were there! I thought I remember finding it hard to find dog-friendly units. Do they allow you to put that in to the search query that? (I’m checking that now…)
April 9, 2015 at 7:22 pm
Yep, they have an off-leash beach! A seal had rolled up, so people were being careful about letting their dogs off leash. Thankfully, Poppy has good recall, so I wasn’t too worried. I posed a pic on my Instagram:-).
YES, AirBnB has a dog friendly search feature:-). Thank god!!!! Awesome about Cambria, might need to get that recc one of these days:-). Let me know when you are back from India!
April 10, 2015 at 10:29 am
Wow, we would have had to keep Posey on leash, she would get herself killed 🙁 I’m looking for your IG righ now, but can never find it in search because it doesn’t list your name. What’s the handle?
And I’m back! Let’s reschedule that Pt Isabel date!
April 11, 2015 at 9:32 pm
I am totally pinning this for future reference. Your dogs are so adorable in that photo of them with their bowls! And that photo of the zebra…what a bizarre yet cool sight!
April 12, 2015 at 10:34 am
Thanks Jenna! We took several takes of that one. It was REALLY hard to get them to stay put 🙂 And yeah, the zebras are so strange. I’d heard something about them several years ago, but I thought it was urban legend. I didn’t realize they were still there in large enough number to actually spot. It was a surreal experience!
September 8, 2015 at 9:33 pm
I am so happy I found your blog! I have a 70 lb furry friend who makes traveling a little difficult- not to mention we just moved to Cali and will definitely be making a trip to the Moonstone Winery. Your doggies look so happy frolicking around!
Thanks again! L

Thanks Lauren! I’m checking out your site now. Are you here in NorCal too? If so, I’d love to meet up sometime!
And let me know if you need any dog-friendly tips. Carmel and Mendocino are other very dog friendly destinations (though, some hotels do have weight limits for dogs, so call to check first! I have a few more dog-travel tips over here: https://everintransit.com/tips-for-traveling-with-your-dog/
Welcome to California, Lauren 🙂

And don’t forget the Golden Gate Bridge, which allows pups to enter after 5 p.m. San Francisco is the ultimate pet-friendly city and should be at the top of your road trip destination list.
Are dogs allowed at Yosemite?
After visiting San Francisco with your dog, you’ll want to head east so you can stay a night in the campgrounds at the dog-friendly Yosemite National Park. While pups are allowed in the park, there are some restrictions on where he can go. He can enter the campgrounds leashed, for example, but he isn’t allowed on most trails. Your pup is allowed on the Wawona Meadow Loop, however, which is 3.6 miles long and has an absolutely beautiful view.
Los Angeles, California
About six hours south of San Francisco (and five from Yosemite), Los Angeles is another must-visit pet-friendly city. There are a total of eight off-leash dog parks and countless dog-friendly restaurants, like Momed and The Fat Dog , and hotels, like The Hoxton in downtown LA. While you’re there, you should definitely check out the dog park located directly below the Hollywood sign, known as Lake Hollywood Park , for some touristy photo ops.
San Diego, California
About two hours south of Los Angeles is sunny San Diego. It’s the perfect city to play beach bum with your pup since there are several dog-friendly beaches to choose from, like Ocean Beach and Fiesta Island on Mission Bay. And what’s awesome is your pup is allowed to go leash-free at these beaches, so he can run around to his heart’s content.

While traveling along the west coast, you’ll be taking the famous Pacific Coast Highway, which goes from San Francisco to San Diego and is one of the most scenic roads in the country. Some must-visit pit stops along the way include Big Sur (where you can camp with your pup along the famous misty coastline) and Carmel-by-the-Sea, which is a super quaint, dog-friendly seaside town you’ll find totally adorable.

Dog-friendly road trip route: Las Vegas > Grand Canyon > Albuquerque Total time driving: About 10 hours and 30 minutes
Going to the desert can be a super fun vacation and can be even better when you bring your pup with you. It can get pretty hot in the summer, but in the cooler months, it’s a great destination if you plan on spending time outside. The amazing rock formations, vast lakes and other natural wonders will make for beautiful memories.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas can be a really fun place to take your pet. While it’s known for the Vegas Strip, there’s also a ton of nature activities you and your pup will love, like hiking the River Mountains Loop Trail or kayaking on Lake Las Vegas. Dogs are only allowed on the strip between 5 a.m. and noon, and you can give your pooch a taste of the high life with a trip in a pet-friendly limo .
Grand Canyon, Arizona
About four hours east of Las Vegas is the Grand Canyon, which is arguably one of the most beautiful areas in the country where pups are welcome (to an extent). Dogs are allowed on trails above the South Rim, plus in plenty of campgrounds onsite.
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Albuquerque is one of the most dog-friendly cities in the nation. It has a total of 14 dog parks, plus tons of lodging and dining spots where you can bring your pup, too. Just head east for about six hours on Route 66, and you’ll be ready to take on the city!

Dog-friendly East Coast road trip
The North East has so much history that you’ll always have something to do. And they really love pets there, so your pup will feel super welcome the entire time.
Dog-friendly road trip route: D.C. > Philly > NYC > Boston Total time driving: About 8 hours
Washington, D.C.
Your dog will love D.C. And you will, too! With so many national monuments, you’ll have endless photo opportunities. Don’t forget to visit the National Mall as well as the Tidal Basin, which has a ton of beautiful cherry blossom trees in spring.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Just three hours north by car (or two hours by train) from D.C., Philly is one of the best places for you (and your dog!) to get cultured in U.S. history. You can take your pup to visit Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell (you can’t bring your pup inside, only outside around the buildings), plus go on one of many historical walking tours that are totally dog friendly.
New York, New York
After just two hours driving north from Philly, you and your pup will find yourselves in the Big Apple. You’ll obviously want to hit up Central Park while you’re there, which has over a mile of green spaces and 23 off-leash areas where your dog can roam between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Other popular dog-friendly activities include walking across the Brooklyn Bridge and taking a ferry past the Statue of Liberty.

How long will it take and what will it cost?
In total, our entire pet friendly American road trip is 15,000 miles and will take at least two months. That’s assuming you have great luck with the weather and don’t mind driving about 8 hours a day.
The cost of the trip depends on how you travel. And where you are comfortable staying is a factor that has a big impact. Car camping or tenting will be least expensive. And staying at pet friendly hotels will cost more. Luckily, pets aren’t picky about where you sleep – as long as you’re together.

Most of the attractions we’ve recommended are fairly inexpensive (free – $20), with a few exceptions. So figure around $500 per person for all the admission fees.
Gas will cost another $1,500 to $2,000.
Then there’s food, which can also vary a lot. To save money, plan to spend time shopping and preparing your own meals rather than eating out. If you can eat for $15 per day, that adds about $900 per person for a two-month trip.
In total, this trip could be done by one person for around $4,500. Bring a buddy to split the lodging and gas costs and the cost is even less for you both.
So, there you have it – our Ultimate Pet Friendly American Road trip! Now all that’s left to do is pack the car, crank up the tunes, and hit the road. Waggin’ trails to you!

You’ll also catch gorgeous views of the bluffs overlooking the ocean, making this a win-win situation for you and your pup.

While you enjoy a delicious meal, indulge your pup with their choice of steak bites, a frozen marrow bone, chicken strips, and more. 6. Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur
A California road trip can never have enough beaches – especially if they are dog-friendly! Pfeiffer Beach 7 is a unique spot with a romantic ambiance you have probably seen in movies and famous photographs. Here you’ll find tide pools and the famous Keyhole Rock that captures the last rays of sunlight. Reviews rave that this is the best place to watch sunsets and its calm environment encourages dogs to explore.
This is a lovely place for a quiet lunch, to read a book, or even play with your pup after a long day on the road. Dogs are required to be on a leash here, but they’re more than welcome to walk along the shore with you. Unwind from the long car drive here and make memories at this hidden gem.
7. Carmel Beach, Carmel
Known as the #1 Dog-Friendly Town in America, Carmel is a must for all pet owners! Carmel Beach 8 is where you’ll see a wide variety of dogs running free and their friendly owners right behind them. There is always another pup around, so if your pet is the playful type, they’ll be sure to make a new friend here! The town takes your pup’s needs into consideration and sets up water bowls and poop bags at the beach in case your dog needs to take a moment from playing with their new beach friends.
Carmel Beach also offers a scenic path where you and your pup can catch sight of Carmel Point, Pebble Beach Golf Links, and Carmel’s gorgeous Cypress trees and white sand beach. We recommend doing both, starting off with a walk that leads to a doggy meet-up near the ocean!
8. Dolores Park, San Francisco
You’ve made it to the city of San Francisco! Just because you’ve stepped into a city doesn’t mean you need to leave your pet at home. San Francisco is known as a pet-friendly city where many shops and restaurants allow dogs, and sometimes even offer a special dog menu!
One of our favorite places to meet Bay Area pups is Dolores Park 9 . Here you’ll see a wide variety of dogs, people, activities, and fields for different sports. Pets are welcomed to roam off-leash in the grassy area here, and on-leash near the sport fields, tennis courts, and playgrounds. You’ll get the chance to meet locals from the area, as well as residents from Noe Valley and The Castro.
Hungry? Stop by Dolores Park Café 10 , a three-minute walk from the park with a dog-friendly patio. Here you’ll find smoothies, small bites, and even meals such as sandwiches and salads. Whether you prefer to eat there or set up a picnic at Dolores park, there’s nothing like being able to take your pup everywhere you go!

Dogs can run free in certain spots, so keep a lookout for signs that suggest otherwise. However, some of the off-leash sites include the beaches along the waterline and the large, grassy field. Whether your pup prefers to romp near the water or would rather stay dry, they get the best of both worlds at Crissy Field!

Fido may be welcome in most places, but some destinations are more dog-friendly than others. So, it is essential to choose a dog-friendly locale when planning a vacation with your pet; that way, you can rest assured there’ll be plenty of dog-friendly beaches , hotels, hiking trails, and parks in your final destination.

Spend a weekend in Sausalito , a dreamy hamlet across the San Francisco Bay that offers exciting activities for you and your pup. Aside from numerous pet-friendly restaurants and kennel clubs, there are also tons of things to do in town. Sausalito offers great hikes, spectacular views, fantastic food, beach walks, wine tastings, and shopping sprees —a ll of which you can enjoy with your favorite four-legged companion. You likely already know that the town of Healdsburg is a coveted Wine Country destination famed for its world-class eateries, art galleries, and charming boutiques. There are also multiple kennel clubs and pup-friendly restaurants and patios to serve up some quality local treats. When visiting, make sure to stop by Mutt Lynch Winery, which has been bestowed with some of the most prestigious accolades and national and international awards for being a dog-friendly winery. Also consider the motto: “B ark less, wag more.”
As they let you sniff around, owners Brenda and Chris Lynch—plus their mutt, Patch—are more than gracious to accommodate you and will even throw in a few treats for your dog, too, as you chat and taste. You should check the website for special events such as “Yappy Hour” and “Dog-A-Palooza.” The winery is even happy to cater to your pooch’s next birthday, puppy shower, or “Bark-Mitzvah.”
Mammoth Lakes
Mammoth Lakes is a prime destination year-round , especially if you’re a dog owner. With tons of pet-friendly cafes, patios, restaurants, and hotels, Mammoth Lakes is the perfect weekend getaway in every sense of the word. If you visit in the summer months, dogs are allowed to ride freely on public transit; this includes the local public buses, shuttles to Reds Meadow, and gondola to the Mammoth Mountain summit. There are numerous trails where you can let your pup roam alongside you as well. For an epic adventure, take Fido on the John Muir Trail , where dogs are allowed off-leash.
Mendocino is one of the most incredible locales for dog-friendly vacations. At Stanford Inn By The Sea, a plate of cookies and a welcome package — consisting of a sweet potato treat, water and food dishes, a stack of dog-waste bags, and two fresh sheets — await you and your dog. An estimated 60 percent of American households have dogs, and most cities and hotels hoping to cash in on this are turning pet-friendly. But the Stanford Inn has welcomed four-legged guests since the early 1980s when Jeff and Joan Stanford bought the property shortly after moving from the Midwest.
The coastal town of Mendocino offers numerous dog-friendly activities, too. Canines can go almost anywhere where people can go. Many local parks, restaurants, and businesses go past just allowing dogs; they welcome them and accommodate their canine quirks, too. This is why your best friend can accompany you on any adventure, including kayaking and canoeing.
No matter where you decide to travel with your pup, make sure you consult with your vet first. A long, arduous journey in the car may be uncomfortable for your dog. Dogs can also just as quickly be car sick as humans, so your dog must be well-rested and adequately checked to avoid any mishaps while traveling.

Visiting Bijou Community Park , a fully fenced off-leash community in Bijou is another favorite spot for every Fido!
William Kent Campground, Kaspian Campground, and Camp shelly at Lake Tahoe are my favorite places where you can camp with your dog close to nature.

13. Half Moon Bay
For a dreamy coastal vacation, Half Moon Bay is a mesmerizing destination for a dog or a parent that is only 35 minutes drive from San Francisco.
I would recommend you to first come to Sam’s Chowder House to kick start your day full of proteins and a stunning plate full of delicious seafood.
Once you are full, drive to Bluff Top Coastal Park and enjoy the light brown sandy beach and sweeping views of the Pacific coast.
My favorite beaches in Half Moon are Pillar Point Harbor Beach, Redondo Beach , Bluff Top trail, Mavericks Beach, and Miramar Beach .
Coastal Trail is a lovely easy dog-friendly trail that ends at Pillar Point Harbour offering adventure and fun to the hiking experience at Half Moon Bay.
If you are in search of a more rewarding and strenuous hike, Montara Mountain can be the one. Remember, to keep your dog on a leash.

Location: Near Carmel River, San Francisco.
The road is scenic from where you will drive inside the Carmel beach. The beach line is packed with dirt-free places for jogging, dog walking, and sightseeing. Carmel is one of the most loved dog-friendly vacations in Northern California.
The area offers some beautiful views from Carmel Point. There are areas to explore like Pebble Beach Golf links, and Lobos State Reserve . The beach line is aligned with Cypress trees and the beach is clean and made of white sand.
The canine visitors can romp along and surf across the clear water. Sea lovers can collect shells and indulge in making sandcastles with their beau or family.
The place is beautiful and rocky cliffs adorn the area. During sunset and high tide, the cliffs get dashed with waves, it is a view to live for.
Pet Rule: Dogs can be left off the leash but please be responsible to clean up the beach area after leaving.
Tip: Trained dogs would be permissible in restaurants and hotels. For young pet owners, a few tourists who access the five-star properties bring their trainers along.

The 8 Best U.S. Road Trips to Take With Your Dog
These are the perfect car rides for you and your canine companion..
No matter what time of year it is, jumping in the car for a road trip can make for some of the most memorable travel moments. But if you've got a canine companion, choosing to take a long drive can be one of the best ways to get on a vacation with your furry friend. After all, the ease of jumping into your own vehicle is a leg up—or four—on taking any other kind of getaway with your pup that involves boarding a train or plane. Having the freedom to chart your own course, make your own schedule, and pull over for a game of catch whenever you want arguably makes it the easiest way to travel together. Read on to see which road trips in the U.S. experts say are the best to take with your dog.

1 | Oregon Coast Highway 101 (Oregon)
Whether it's built by habit or happens by luck, humans tend to have a lot in common with their pets. Fortunately, this can be a huge help when selecting travel destinations.
"There are few things in this world that bring such mutual, primal joy to humans and canines alike as the ocean," Adam Marland , travel writer and photographer for We Dream of Travel , tells Best Life . "There is something about having your feet (or paws!) in the sand and tasting that salty air that just makes you feel alive."
"Highway 101 traces the Oregon coast from border to border, providing jaw-dropping scenery adorned with monolithic sea stacks, tide pools, unspoiled wilderness, and plenty of assorted natural wonders," he says. "What's more, nearly the entire coastline offers state or local parks with camping and facilities, making it the perfect place to road trip without an itinerary."
And there's no reason your pet can't enjoy themselves, too. "Dogs are allowed anywhere on the beach, so you never have to worry about bringing your faithful companion along for a walk," Marland adds.
2 | The Beartooth Highway (Montana)
Stunning mountain vistas and wide open spaces can work wonders on the human psyche. But according to experts, it can be just as enlightening for your dog to enjoy the same settings along with you during a road trip. That's where a drive through Montana can come in handy.
"The Beartooth Highway, which runs 68 miles between Cooke City and Red Lodge in Montana, travels through some of the country's most breathtaking scenery," Erin Mastopietro , owner and founder of Dope Dog , tells Best Life . "Twenty peaks that reach above 12,000 feet are passed along this road, one of the highest in the lower 48 states."

3 | Lake Tahoe (California)
Sometimes, taking a trip with your pet is as much about getting them into nature as it is about finding a place that welcomes them into top-notch human establishments, as well. Lake Tahoe provides the perfect blend of an outdoor getaway with plenty of town-based activities that both of you can enjoy.
"Just a 90-minute drive from Sacramento and a 3.5-hour drive from San Francisco, Lake Tahoe is located in the Sierra Nevada and makes the perfect Northern California road trip to take with your dog," Gigi Chow , co-owner and operator of dog travel website Wet Nose Escapades, tells Best Life . "With an abundance of outdoor adventures and gorgeous scenery, it's also a fantastic dog-friendly destination."
"From dog parks to dog-friendly shopping areas (like The Shops at Heavenly Village) to dog-friendly live music venues, you'll never fall short of fun activities to do with your pet. Although you can't bring your dog inside the casinos here, there are plenty of eateries and breweries with dog-friendly seating," she says. "There are also perfect scenic hikes for you and your dog—including Lake of the Sky Trail, Mt. Tallac, Tahoe Rim Trail—and beaches where canines are allowed, like Kiva Beach, Thomas F. Regan Memorial City Beach, North Zephyr Cove Beach, Fallen Leaf Lake. You can even kayak with your dog around the beautiful blue water."
4 | Seattle and the San Juan Islands (Washington)
The Pacific Northwest is a paradise for outdoor lovers, no matter what species they happen to be. And in Washington State, one day trip popular with humans is sure to be a hit for any canine copilots.
"A road trip that combines Seattle and the San Juan Islands is a great choice to take with your four-legged friend," Larry Snider , vice president of operations of Casago Vacation Rentals , tells Best Life . "From Seattle, you'll drive about 80 miles to Anacortes, Washington, where ferries depart for the San Juan islands. There are lovely parks to explore here before you even board the ferry. Then, hop on the ferry (with your car!) and head to Orcas Island. Dogs ride free on the ferry and will have a blast with this new experience. Once there, you can hike, swim, and adventure around."

5 | Lake Coeur d'Alene (Idaho)
Idaho offers plenty of wide-open spaces that make for epic drives. But if you're looking to break up the landscape, one natural landmark makes for a beautiful dog-friendly destination.
"One of the best road trips to take with your furry friend is through Idaho's Lake Coeur d'Alene," Nick Mueller , travel expert and director of operations of HawaiianIslands.com, tells Best Life . "The beautiful body of water unfolds over 26 miles with more than 135 miles of shoreline. You can take scenic boat tours and hike on pet-friendly trails during your time here. It's a gorgeous way to spend time with your pup!"
6 | Denver to Grand Canyon National Park (Colorado and Arizona)
Seeing the Grand Canyon tops many peoples' bucket lists for a reason: The epic views and sprawling grandeur are breathtaking. But if dogs could make bucket lists of their own, experts say they'd probably put it on theirs, too.
"Which outdoorsy dog wouldn't want to accompany you to the Grand Canyon?" says Jenny Ly , travel blogger and founder of Go Wanderly . "You'll see several national forests along the steep road. Go to Colorado's White River National Forest to explore the Flat Tops Wilderness, where your dog is free to roam. Alternately, travel south through the Rio Grande and San Juan National Forests, stopping for a stroll. Keep your dog on a leash and stay on the South and North rim pet-friendly trails when visiting the Grand Canyon to ensure you follow all park regulations."

7 | Niagara Falls (New York)
There are plenty of perks for people who want to visit Niagara Falls. Besides the genuinely breathtaking natural wonder, there's also plenty to see and do in the surrounding area on both the Canadian and American sides of the border. And if you happen to bring your dog along as you finally check seeing the Falls off your to-do list, there's a good chance they'll enjoy themselves as well.
"A road trip to Niagara Falls should be on every dog owner's list," Sherry Arkfeld , author of Digital Nomad and a Dog , tells Best Life . "The state park is very dog friendly and a great place for dogs to explore. There are many restaurants nearby that allow dogs on the patios. My dog didn't appreciate the waterfalls too much, but she sure did enjoy the park. You can also walk over to Goat Island and Three Sisters Island for more views for you and more things for your dog to sniff."
8 | St. George and Moab (Utah)
If you want to get the most out of enjoying the outdoors with your pet, it's best to consider the places where they'll be welcome. Fortunately, Utah's vast wilderness provides plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the sights with your dog.
"I highly recommend a road trip with your dog to/from St. George and Moab, Utah," Whitney Woolstenhulme , founder of dog grooming website DoodleDoods , tells Best Life . "Nearly the whole geographical area between these two locations is comprised of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, which is public space that can be used for all kinds of dog-friendly recreational activities. For example, you can dry camp in a tent or RV for free, explore a variety of beautiful terrain, including slot canyons, you can use your ATVs or mountain bikes, and go rock climbing. And of course, you can legally let the dogs run wild and free to their heart's content."
Just make sure you pick the right season for your drive. "The best time to embark on such a road trip is in spring or fall when daytime temperatures are bearable, and it's not terribly cold at night," she suggests.

Dog Friendly Getaways in Northern California
California may be synonymous with the likes of Hollywood (Los Angeles), beaches (San Diego/Santa Barbara) or even Silicon valley and the Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco Bay Area), but its beauty undoubtedly lies in its various small towns (that are also excellent winter destinations BTW) . Most of these towns welcome dogs with pet friendly accommodations , restaurants and activities. These towns are perfect escapes from city life for dog friendly getaways or those looking for road trips with dogs from San Francisco .
Being a dog mom who doubles up as a San Francisco resident , I have explored many cute Northern California towns with our precious munchkins Babu and Gunda via our dog friendly road trips . Whether or not you are owned by a dog, these towns that I am about to reveal in this post are not only perfect as dog friendly vacation spots , but are generally great places to relax with family and friends, are amazing romantic getaways in Northern California and let you explore a hidden side to California that most tourists do not know of .
These towns, perfect for dog friendly weekend breaks , are great alternatives to pricey Napa valley and Sonoma when it comes to wine tasting, have some of the most beautiful hikes, the giant redwoods and of course pristine beaches to help you enjoy that long weekend away from worldly worries!
I have also included specific suggestions for these dog friendly weekend getaways in Northern California such as dog friendly lodging , hikes, dog friendly Redwoods and dog friendly restaurants which are 100% based on my travels and are thus honest and authentic.

Dog Friendly vacations in Northern California #1 Mendocino
This was one of our best dog friendly getaways and we loved this town so much that we visited thrice ! Mendocino, the misty coastal town, is extremely pet friendly and is also a gateway to the giant Redwoods to California, along with its sister cities of Ukiah and Willits.
You can indulge yourself (and your pup) a little by staying at the Stanford Inn (home to the famous restaurant Ravens where dogs can dine inside the dining hall !) or Little River Inn , one of the best dog friendly hotels in Mendocino with a dog friendly dining room that can reserved or Heritage House Resort and Spa (luxury resort to pamper your doggo) or the ever dependable Holiday Inn Express in the Fort Bragg area where we stayed during our visit to Fort Bragg for whale watching (which was also a dog friendly experience).
Being close to Anderson Valley , one of the premium California wine regions that is home to lush California Pinot Noirs, Mendocino is blessed with wineries at Boonville and Yorkville in Anderson county and those in the upper Russian River Valley around Ukiah, Redwood Valley, Hopland and Potter Valley, many of which welcome dogs.
Beautiful beaches at Fort Bragg, riding the skunk train through the Redwoods with your dog and canoeing in the Big River are some of the other things to keep you and your pup happy during your dog friendly vacation . Finally, do not give Point Cabrillo lighthouse a miss since it is that one rare lighthouse that welcomes dogs to its lower level. The coastal route from Mendocino to San Francisco is also another scenic route filled with beautiful pit stops that you must not miss!
Dogs are not allowed to hike in any of the Redwood Groves in Mendocino county, but you can read my fantastic list of dog friendly Redwoods near San Francisco for many other options.
Where to go with your dog in Northern California #2 Calistoga
Everyone heading to Napa valley is unfailingly seduced by the glamour of rolling vineyards in St. Helena, Yountville and Healdsburg and so few end up going further north to the sleepy little town of Calistoga . Once a mere rural town filled with farmland, Calistoga is figuratively and literally a hot spot now, thanks to all the spas and mud bath facilities here owing to considerable geothermal action in this area .
Calistoga is also very dog friendly , thanks to its many pet friendly accommodations such as the Solage resort (has a charming patio for al fresco dining) or the Calistoga Motor Lodge & Spa where we stayed and absolutely loved the experience during our latest Calistoga trip .
This perfect dog friendly getaway boasts of yet another secret which is the “Old Faithful” Geyser (this place also has a goat farm…say whaaat?) on Tubbs lane that welcomes dogs. Lots of dog friendly wineries are also nearby for some good old wine tasting with your best friend! Add this sleepy wine country town to your list of dog friendly weekend breaks and you will not be disappointed!
Dog friendly road trips in Northern California #3 Murphys
Murphys is that one tiny charming town in California’s Calaveras county (aka between San Francisco and Stockton) that no one really tells you anything about. That is a good thing for sure, because not only it is a smashing destination for a weekend getaway with dogs but also has some of the cheapest and most varied wine pourings that you’ll come across in California.
Fun fact: Calaveras county was made famous by Mark Twain in his short story “ The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” and it thus comes as little surprise that you will see bull frog statues strewn everywhere in this tiny town.
We stayed at a the charming Courtwood Inn B&B over the weekend with Babu and explored downtown Murphys, which is simply Main street that has tons of wine tasting rooms and restaurants that welcome dogs.
Some of our notable pet friendly restaurant visits were to Alchemy Market & Cafe, Grounds, Aria bakery (you HAVE TO try their savory croissant and biscuits) and V restaurant and bar. Alchemy also has live music in a covered patio which was great for us since we visited on a particularly rainy weekend.
Downtown wine tasting rooms such as Gossamer Cellars (they have a dog friendly sign outside) , Twisted Oak (their winery is super popular for the quirky signs that lead up to the tasting room, so arrive early) and Frog’s tooth let you do some good old dog friendly wine tasting on Main street.
We also stopped by Chatom winery (another dog friendly winery in Murphys ) for additional wine tasting since we had already made the rounds of the tasting rooms. The wine pours are either mix and match of reds, whites and sometimes dessert wines and are super cheap at $5-10 for tasting, with the fee being waived off if you purchase a bottle.
Besides wine tasting, you can either go for a stroll in Murphys community park (a pleasant gurgling brook runs through it) or hike the 17.5 mile long Arnold Rim trail , which is a popular trail in Calaveras county and has dog friendly trails . Simply put, this low key town is simply perfect for a weekend break with dogs .
Click here to compare prices on all dog friendly hotels at and around Murphys
Weekend breaks with dogs in Northern California #4 Lodi
Lodi, the world’s Zinfandel capital, is the best kept secret of California’s wine country . Dog or no dog, you will be charmed by Lodi’s world famous wineries which boast of unparalleled scenic beauty and even better, cheap wine pourings at $8 per person. Downtown Lodi also has several dog friendly tasting rooms and many of their restaurants welcome dogs in covered patios, all of which are an easy walk from this charming dog friendly cottage where we stayed.
This is a perfect destination for a dog friendly weekend break and has been one of our best dog friendly getaways so far! I highly recommend a visit to Toasted Toad cellars in downtown, Oak Farm Vineyards and Bokisch Vineyards who are famous for their Iberian wines.
Lake Lodi is a scenic spot for a stroll and don’t miss the “Lodi special Grape Pie” at Smack pie Pizza. Lodi is crazy about grapes and wine and you will have a great time there if wine tasting and natural beauty are your jam!
Enjoy Lodi with a luxurious dog friendly stay at Wine & Roses Hotel (they have outdoor pool, spa and an upscale restaurant) or the ever dependable Econo Lodge Inn & Suites or Holiday Inn Express .
Dog friendly towns in Northern California #5 Bonny Doon & Capitola (Santa Cruz)
Santa Cruz is that one mix of hippie yoga meets beach town that is characteristic California, but there is so much more to this place than what meets the eye. A lot of Bay Area folks throng to Santa Cruz for its crowded AF boardwalk (dogs not allowed and too noisy to go anyway) or stay in one of the noisy and pricey hotels overlooking the beach. However, this town has a different side to it as well and one that is incredibly dog friendly and serene.
Santa Cruz is home to the coastal redwoods, one of the tallest trees on earth and you can totally embrace their beauty by staying at the nearby town of Bonny Doon in a beautiful dog friendly B&B in the heart of the redwoods. Hidden beaches with nary a person in sight, close proximity to Santa Cruz downtown, lots of dog friendly restaurants (one of them even has a menu specially for dogs) and a hike through the Redwoods (with dog friendly trails) makes Santa Cruz a great dog friendly getaway spot !
For those looking to stay right next to downtown Santa Cruz , I highly recommend the dog friendly Pacific Blue Inn which also offers free parking and free breakfast with your pup by your side. For beachfront dog friendly hotels, check out Ocean Pacific Lodge , Seaway Inn and Hampton Inn Santa Cruz West .
Besides Bonny Doon, the other picturesque pint sized Northern California beach town to explore near Santa Cruz is Capitola-by-the-sea . Capitola is a mere 4 miles drive from downtown Santa Cruz and is famous for its row of colorful homes overlooking the beach, aptly named “ the Venetians”.
Although dogs are not allowed either on Capitola state beach or the wharf, you can easily walk down Capitola Avenue to explore the shops and restaurants (Margaritaville has a dog friendly patio with killer margaritas) or better still, sit on a bench at the enclosed paved viewing area to catch the surfers in action. Capitola Hotel and Monarch Cove Inn are the two dog friendly hotels here.

If you are visiting California or are dying to go for your next adventure somewhere from San Francisco, do explore these small towns that are filled with warm, friendly people and a natural beauty that will enthrall your senses.

I loved this post so much! Although I live in Texas, it never hurts to already know of pet friendly places that I can travel. I’m a huge of fan of small towns because have the most character. California is a must for Chip and I travel to.
Murphy’s looks like my kind of place and anywhere with giant redwoods I am all in for! It is wonderful that there are so many dog-friendly places to visit in California! Thank you for sharing your travels! I just love the idea of being able to travel with my pups one day!
Beautiful pictures, I enjoyed reading about your adventures. I’m always encouraged by the increasing number of dog friendly places, I hate leaving mine at home.
Oh the LAMA!! also some good walks/hikes and beaches there. Nice! A bit far for a weekend get away for us…. one of these days we will need to just draw out a Cali raod trip!
I’d love to take Mr. N to a lighthouse one day! A California roadtrip is in our plans at some point. The hardest part about traveling with Mr. N is finding places to eat. More covered heated patios please!
These look awesome! My wife and I need to take a trip with the dogs sometime.
Some lovely places you listed here. Cookie would find California too hot; I would worry about snakes and insects. But looks lovely.
Wow, I love all your pictures! All these small towns look so dog-friendly and like great places to visit! Bonnie and I might have to take a road trip from DC to California one day to check them out! 🙂
I love your dog! So photogenic!
Great pictures and post about dog friendly places in California. I love California, but have never been there with a dog. I would love to visit Mendocino as it is my dream to see the Redwoods one day!
1. Get a dog ( or 2…3…) 2. Head to Northern California
Thanks for shating your post! ?
You always find the best places. I remember hearing about Santa Cruz and Lodi , CA when I lived in Southern California however haven’t heard of these other places. Extra bonus because they are dog friendly. Pinned this post. I like the new look too. 🙂
These 5 places all look awesome. We stayed in Calistoga for a wedding last summer and had a blast. We went to the same places and rented bikes and biked through vineyards. It seemed really dog friendly. Great photos.
Your photography is stunning! I feel like I’m there! It’s such a joy to get to visit new places when there’s a dog by your side. It’s our favorite way to travel!
Your photos are stunning! I grew up in Northern California and you helped me see Lodi in an entirely new light.
I thought the title will say Northern Ireland and now when I look at your beautiful photos it even reminds me of Ireland 🙂 This is a beautiful place to take your pup on a trip.
I love seeing all the places you go! My daughter might be in California this summer, and I’m going to share this post with her. Although she doesn’t have a dog (yet), like me she’ll choose a dog friendly place just so she can other people’s dogs!
What an amazing weekend trip! California is on my dog-friendly travel bucket list. It’s a tough one, living in Ohio. But, now I really want to plan it and see that lighthouse. Amazing.
Wow! Several of these destinations sound amazing! I haven’t spent much time in California, but it looks like I need to! Mendocino would be my top pick with the redwoods I think!
I’ll be moving to the bay area with my pup in the next month and I found your AMAZING blog – I already have countless weekend trips planned! Just wanted to say thanks for much for being an invaluable resource.
Thank you Christy for your kind words. You made my day! I hope you and your pup have some amazing adventures here!
Your photos look truly amazing, and you’ll cherish these memories forever! I always try to take my boy on vacation with me, it just doesn’t feel right to leave him out.
Agree with Veky, these pictures are amazing.
I’ve been to Mendocino and have to say that the Stanford Inn is awesome!

The perfect travel companion can be hard to find, but sometimes it's as easy as inviting a furry little friend to join . However, it obviously isn’t always easy to travel with a dog. There are many places they aren’t allowed, or modes of transportation they can’t take. And, if travelers choose to go on a road trip with their dog, they must also keep their pet's comfort in mind.
If all of this is taken care of, then road tripping with a fur baby can be a great time. Obviously, travelers must take their dog's individual needs and personality in mind when road tripping with them. If the driving distances are too great for an individual dog, then don’t do them. Travelers can treat this article as an itinerary or simply a guide to five great locations (including some of the best dog-friendly beaches ). Either way, travelers are sure to have a great time with this perfect dog-friendly Pacific Northwest road trip itinerary.
Perhaps not the most convenient of locations, but almost because of that reason, this park is an incredible destination to bring a dog to.
The San Juan Islands Sculpture Park connects nature with fantastical art. The island is littered with marshland and coastline that dogs will love exploring.

Perhaps it is the ever-present scent of Bunnies or Haystack Rock that was featured in the Goonies, regardless, Cannon Beach in Oregon is an excellent location to spend some time with the pup.
The city does see an influx of rabbits, but it's likely that your dog won’t interact with them at the beach. However, in the spirit of the Goonies, this is a great location to go hunting for some treasure and find a good time.
Leashes are not required for dogs visiting the beach, but it is strongly encouraged that only well-behaved dogs be allowed off-leash as there will likely be others visiting the beach with their furry friends.

There are also a fantastic collection of local dog-friendly walking trails if travelers want to get away from the beach for some time.

The cabins bring a bit of cozy city comfort and artistic style. For those who want to spend the night in one, they’re available for rent.

Cape Disappointment State Park may have the most pessimistic name of any American State Park, but that has more to do with a story from the park’s past full of adventure and treachery, not actually being a disappointment.
The details surrounding the park's name are part of the fun of visiting here.
The best place to catch more details about the park's past is to visit the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. Travelers can even bring their pets into the center, assuming they asked permission first, to enjoy the history lesson too.
Other than history, travelers and their furry friends will have a variety of dog-friendly trails to adventure around and snag some photos.
One of the locations travelers will likely encounter is North Head Lighthouse. It still watches over the cove and guides sailors to this day.
