A day trip to Komodo Island to see pink beach with aqua water

The undisputed celebrities of Komodo Island are the fierce and fearsome Komodo dragons. Spotting them in their natural habitat is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Many tourists take a multi-day trip from Bali to meet the fabled Komodo dragons. But this tour is both expensive and time-consuming.

The good news is you can access Komodo Island quicker and cheaper from Labuan Bajo. And you don’t have to book an overnight trip as 10 to 11 hours is enough to see many of the island’s highlights.

This article covers everything you need to know before visiting one of Indonesia’s top attractions. Here is our guide to a day trip to Komodo Island from Labuan Bajo.

In This Post

Where is komodo island.

Komodo Island is in Indonesia’s southernmost province of East Nusa Tenggara. Along with Padar, Rinca and 26 smaller islands, it forms the Komodo National Park.

Created in 1980 to protect the endangered Komodo dragon, the Komodo National Park is among the New Seven Wonders of Nature . Indeed, it is the only place in the world where you can see these lizards in the wild.

The Komodo islands also sit on the Coral Triangle, a region containing some of the richest marine biodiversity on the planet.

When is the best time to visit Komodo Island?

Pink beach with calm blue water and rugged mountains surrounding the bay

April to June and September to December are the best months to visit the island. The weather is milder, there is a slim chance of rain, and the sea is calmer. These are also shoulder seasons, so the islands have fewer tourists and lower rates.

Avoid January to March, especially February, as it is the peak of the monsoon season, and you’ll encounter heavy rains and rough seas. July to August, the peak season, can get very crowded, expensive, and sweltering hot.

How to get to Komodo Island from Labuan Bajo?

Labuan Bajo, a fishing town on the western tip of Flores Island, is the gateway for trips to Komodo Island and the Komodo National Park. Komodo Island is roughly an hour from Labuan Bajo by boat. The only way to access the park is with a tour.

Although there are no international flights to Labuan Bajo, it has daily flights from within Indonesia, most frequently from Denpasar in Bali and the capital Jakarta.

It’s best to arrive in Labuan Bajo at least a day before your trip to the Komodo Islands. It gives you ample time to shop for the best tour packages and compare prices.

Why choose a day trip to Komodo Island?

A Komodo Island day trip allows you to explore the top popular spots of the Komodo National Park within a 10 to 11-hour period. On the other hand, a full tour lasts two to four days, wherein participants stay on a live-aboard boat.

A day trip is your best option if you’re on a tight schedule. The tour usually starts at 5 to 6 am and ends at 6 pm. You may not be able to visit all the attractions, but you’ll still see the island’s highlights, so it won’t feel like you’re missing out. And if you’re on a limited budget, a day trip is significantly cheaper than a multi-day live-aboard tour.

Now the real question is: should you take a slow or a fast boat on your day trip?

Slow boat vs Fast Boat

A slow boat is cheaper and, in a way, uniquely relaxing. The downside is you don’t get to see many places. The main focus of your trip is Komodo Island, where you’ll see the lizards and visit the captivating Pink Beach. Most tours also stop at Pink Beach and Manta Point, where you can snorkel with manta rays.

While a fast boat is more expensive, it visits more places. Apart from Komodo Island, your typical stops include Padar Island, Manta Point, and Kanawa Island. Sometimes, the trip may feel rushed as you dash from one location to another to see as many attractions within your tight schedule. To avoid this, review the tour’s itinerary carefully.

How much is a day trip to Komodo Island?

Your Komodo Island day trip expenses depend on which tour package you choose. The tour price usually doesn’t include entrance fees, snorkelling fees, and government tax.

The price of a slow boat day group tour ranges from 650,000-750,000 IDR (42-50 USD) per person. Each boat accommodates around 10 to 15 passengers. The package includes lunch, snorkelling gear, bottled water or soft drinks, and pick-up and drop-off transport.

Aerial view of a pink beach and aqua water

A fast boat group tour is pricier and costs around 1,300,00-1,500,000 IDR (86-97 USD) per person. A smaller speed boat accommodates 8 to 12 people, while a bigger one can have as many as 30 passengers. Like other tours, the price covers lunch, snorkelling gear, bottled water or soft drinks, and pick-up and drop-off.

You can opt for a private tour if you want a more exclusive trip and don’t mind splurging. It costs around 2,900,000-3,100,000 IDR (180-200 USD) per person with a maximum of five participants. You can search for a tour when you get to Labuan Bajo or book the day trip online .

Tip: Pick a tour when you arrive in Labuan Bajo, as prices are usually cheaper when booked directly from the tour company. However, if you’re short on time, it makes more sense to book in advance online. Be sure to check the itineraries and customer reviews.

Are there additional fees?

Most day trips don’t cover entrance fees, snorkelling fees, gratuities, and government tax. Always check with the tour company to avoid confusion on which fees are part of the package.

The Komodo National Park entrance fee is 150,000 IDR (10 USD) on regular days and 250,000 IDR (16 USD) on public holidays. You pay a separate entrance fee for every island you visit. For instance, Komodo Island charges an entrance fee of 100,000 IDR, Padar 150,000 IDR and Kanwa 100,000 IDR.

Aerial view of sand bank and aqua water in Nusa Tenggara

Other charges include sports and recreation fees (100,000 IDR), hiking fees (5,000 IDR), wildlife observation fees (10,000 IDR), ranger fees (120,000 IDR), and snorkelling fees (50,000 IDR). To be safe, budget around 500,000 to 800,000 IDR (35-55 USD) on top of your tour price. Be sure to have cash, as some places may not accept electronic payments.

Note: Though these prices are current and updated (2023 – 2024), some fees may change without prior notice.

Things to Do on a Day Trip to Komodo Island

Observe komodo dragons in the wild.

Komodo lizard standing in rocks

Seeing Komodo dragons in their natural habitat is probably your main reason for visiting Komodo Island. You will go on a walking tour with your guide to find these gigantic lizards. Visitors must exercise caution as some Komodo dragons are known to bite.

Visit Pink Beach

Pink Beach’s colour is due to the crushed “red” corals that mix with the white sand. The rosy tinge contrasts beautifully with the turquoise waters of the sea. Pink Beach is an excellent swimming and snorkelling spot.

Hike to Padar Island Viewpoint

View from Padar Island of a beach with clear water and surrounding mountains

The spectacular panorama that awaits you at the Padar Island viewpoint is worth the 30-minute steep hike to the top. In the rainy season, emerald-green grass covers the Padar hills. In summer, the vegetation turns golden brown.

Meet Manta Rays at Manta Point

Despite its name, Manta Point isn’t exclusive to manta rays. It harbours a stunning coral garden and various marine creatures, including turtles, giant clams, sponges, thousands of small tropical fish, and the occasional whale shark. Visit in April or September for higher chances of swimming with manta rays.

Soak Up the Beauty of Taka Makassar Island

Taka Makassar is the longest reef in the Komodo National Park. Shallow crystal-clear waters surround this crescent-shaped pinkish-white sandbar. At high tide, the tiny strip of land disappears under the sea. But when it’s afloat, it’s the perfect spot for serene strolls and picture-taking.

What happens on a Komodo Island day trip?

So, what can you expect on a day trip to Komodo Island? Here is a sample itinerary based on a fast book group tour.

Start: Pick Up

Pick-up is between 5:00 am and 5:45 am at the hotel lobby. Be there on time, as the tour runs on a strict schedule. If your accommodation includes a complimentary breakfast, ask the staff to pack your food.

Once everyone is in the port, the group gets into the boat. It takes roughly an hour to get to the first stop.

First Stop: Padar Island (1-1.5 hours)

The most popular spot on the island is its viewpoint, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes to climb. You can explore the hills at your own pace. Just be back at the boat at the designated time.

Second Stop: Pink Beach (1 hour)

Along the northern bay of the island, a short boat ride from the viewpoint, is a hidden pink beach. Here, you can have a quiet reflection time, wade in the warm water, or grab some snorkel gear.

Third Stop: Komodo Island (2 hours)

To many, the highlight of the trip is meeting the ferocious Komodo dragons. After a quick safety briefing, you will explore one of three hiking trails as you search for the lizards. Once all the participants return from the walk, the tour team will serve a hearty lunch of freshly cooked Indonesian dishes, usually served with tropical fruits for dessert.

Fourth Stop: Manta Point (1 hour)

Manta Point is home to the friendly and fabulous manta rays. However, these creatures are elusive, and there’s no guarantee you’ll see them on your trip. The tour may decide to move to the next stop if no manta rays appear after a while.

Fifth Stop: Manta Point (1 hour)

A heavenly sandbar surrounded by crystal clear blue water, Taka Massar is another famous snorkelling hotspot. Underwater are schools of colourful fish and vivid corals. You might even see a sea turtle or two.

Sixth Stop: Kanawa Island (1 hour)

Kanawa is the ideal place to unwind after a day of adventure. You can laze on the sand and admire the views. If you still have some energy to burn, you can do light snorkelling or relax in the water on a floater.

End: Back to Labuan Bajo

You’ll arrive at Labuan Bajo around 4 to 5 pm. You’ll have spent 10 to 11 hours on the tour.

What to bring?

These items will come handy on your Komodo Island day tour:

  • Hiking/walking shoes
  • Slippers or beach sandals
  • Sun hat or cap
  • Insect repellant, especially if you are visiting during the rainy season
  • Quick dry, light towel
  • Swimwear ( Tip: Consider wearing a rash guard to prevent sunburn )
  • Snacks and drinks ( Tip: Some tour companies allow passengers to bring beer. If you plan to bring an alcoholic beverage, check with your tour team first .)
  • Change of clothes
  • Light jacket as travelling in the early morning can get chilly
  • Cash for entrance fees and other personal expenses

Who can participate in the tour?

Except for certain limitations, almost anyone can join the tour. Children must be with adults at all times. If you’re travelling with an infant, you must sit the child on your lap.

Please know that the islands are not wheelchair accessible. The trip is not suitable for pregnant travellers, guests with back or heart problems and other grave medical conditions. In other words, you should be reasonably fit to join the tour.

See the famous Komodo Dragons up close with this 2-day tour  from Labuan Bajo of the Indonesian islands where these gigantic reptiles live.

Pink Beach on Komodo Island

Day 1: Labuan Bajo - Bidadari – Rinca – Padar – Kalong

Having picked you up at your hotel or the Labuan Bajo airport, whichever you prefer, the tour makes its way to the Western part of the island to embark on a ferry to Bidadari island.  Once you disembark, you'll have free time to snorkel in the crystal clear water.

Our tour then continues south to Rinca island , where we'll begin a hiking trail lasting approximately two hours. This is where you'll be able to see the famous Komodo Dragons of the islands. Their enormous size has given rise to any number of myths and legends throughout the ages, and you'll have the opportunity to confirm those stories for yourself! And as well as these legendary beasts, you'll have to keep your eyes open for any number of local species, such as the exotic birds and mammals which hide around every corner.

With our guided hike around Rinca complete, we head back on board, on the way to the island of Padar. Here we'll climb up its highest peak, to be delighted by the spectacular views of this dream island. We'll fuel up with dinner on board, then take up the route again, on our way to  Kalong Island . Here we'll see the so-called 'flying foxes' (the largest species of bat in the world) indigenous to this part of Indonesia, which can weigh up to 1.6 kg.

The day then ends with dinner on the boat, where we'll spend the night.

Day 2: Komodo Island – Labuan Bajo

Having eaten breakfast on board we'll disembark on Komodo Island, admiring once more the different kinds of reptiles which, thanks to their colossal size, have for centuries been known as 'dragons'. As well as getting up close and personal with the local wildlife, we'll visit  Pink Beach  another of the natural wonders of the island. We'll eat lunch on board the boat, then the cherry on the cake comes in the form of a tour around Komodo, snorkelling in its crystalline waters - where if you're lucky you may even see a manta ray!

Finally, we'll head back to Labuan Bajo. After disembarking at 4 pm, your guide will take you back to your hotel.

Komodo Island Tour: Hotel

Day 1: labuan bajo – kelor – rinca – padar – kalong – labuan bajo.

Having picked you up at your hotel or the Labuan Bajo airport, we make our way by road to the boat due to take you to Kelor Island . After free time to snorkel off the coast we'll climb back on board to sail to Rinca Island , where we'll take a two hour hiking trail, to see the famous Komodo Dragons - learning about their origins, habitat, and behaviour up close.

After lunch on board, we'll sail the clear waters of the Flores sea to Padar Island  whose tropical landscapes are sure to captivate from the very first moment! Then we'll head to Kalong Island , to see the famous 'flying fox' bats who call the island their home. Then the day ends back at Labuan Bajo, with dinner and accommodation in a four-star hotel on its Western coast.

Day 2: Labuan Bajo – Bidadari – Komodo Island – Labuan

Full of energy we'll launch from the Labuan Bajo port to Bidadari Island, where you'll snorkel in the crystal clear waters off the coast, delighted by the wealth of wildlife. Then we head to the famous Komodo Island itself, which will be perhaps your best opportunity to see the legendary dragons in their natural habitat. Having eaten on board we'll then visit the famous Pink Beach, where, all being well, you'll be able to swim with Manta rays!

Then, with unforgettable memories of the Indonesian wildlife, we'll head back to the western port of Labuan Bajo for 4 pm, where a minibus will be waiting to take you back to your hotel or to the airport, whichever you prefer.

What do I need to do?

More Than Dragons: How to Explore Labuan Bajo & Komodo National Park

View of Kelor Island within Komodo National Park with Phinisi Boats in the water - Luxury Escapes

  • Primary Item (H2)

The Indonesian harbour town of Labuan Bajo is famously the gateway to Komodo National Park. Beyond Komodo dragons the region offers luxury stays, authentic culture and thrilling adventures all just waiting to be explored.

Where is Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo sits on the western end of Flores, a large island within the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara. The town itself (as well as the surrounding coastline) is considered a part of the famed Komodo National Park, along with three larger islands and 26 smaller islands in the region.

How to get to Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo is a 75-minute flight from Bali’s Denpasar International Airport (DPS) but feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle. Several airlines fly domestically from Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali and Kupang, including the country’s national carrier, Garuda Indonesia. From September, the island will welcome its first direct international flight from Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia, with more airlines rumoured to follow the trend.

Where to stay in Labuan Bajo

While the area is still a lesser-known Indonesian destination compared to Bali (at least for Australians), this certainly doesn’t mean you will be roughing it. Labuan Bajo is already home to 12 four- or five-star resorts, with five more under construction, including Crowne Plaza’s first property in the region.

Meruorah Komodo Labuan Bajo

For some of the best uninterrupted views over Labuan Bajo’s sunset, five-star Meruorah Komodo Labuan Bajo is perfectly positioned directly on the waterfront in the town’s downtown marina. Head up to  Moon Bar or the hotel’s rooftop infinity pool for sundowners and the panoramic views over the Flores Sea.

Ayana Komodo Waecicu Beach brings unparalleled luxury to the region, with exclusive amenities such as five boats, the tranquil AYANA Spa, seven bars and restaurants, and a private island, all seamlessly combined to offer every indulgence you could ever want.

Once a mere fishing village, Labuan Bajo (and the region as a whole) is quickly becoming a hotspot for those looking to experience adventure and authentic local traditions, all without sacrificing modern comforts.

Spend the night onboard a Phinisi yacht

A signature experience of the area is a stay onboard a Phinisi boat (a traditional two-masted sailing ship). Upon arriving in Labuan Bajo you’ll see a harbour full of traditional sailing boats, many converted to accommodate guests wanting to experience the region in a unique way.

With a range of styles, from traditional vessels to luxurious five-star yachts (notably AYANA’s Lako Di’A), guests can charter one for a private group, or opt for a shared experience, with stays from one to three nights onboard.

Typical itineraries include a sunrise hike at Padar Island, a visit to Pink Beach for snorkelling, a stop at Kalong Island to witness the bats at sunset, Komodo/Rinca Island to spot the Komodo dragons in their natural habitat, plus a number of other hidden gems of the region, only discoverable by boat.

Discover authentic villages

While Labuan Bajo continues to grow and develop, it certainly hasn’t lost its traditional charm and authenticity.

Take the 40-minute journey out of Labuan Bajo to find yourself immersed in the lush green hills of Melo Village. Take part in a half-day cultural tour of the village, to gain a greater understanding of the traditions and the history of the region. The tour begins with a warm welcome ceremony before sitting back to enjoy a number of cultural performances, while sipping on a cup of Flores coffee. Witness the traditional bamboo pole jumping game ‘Tetek Alu’, the ‘Ndundu Dake’ dance and the well-known Caci performance (a dance using whips and shields denoting war and folk games, that is performed to the beat of traditional musical instruments).

Eat like a local

When it comes time to refuel, it doesn’t get more authentic than eating local ingredients foraged from an onsite jungle garden at Dapur Tara Flores Restaurant.

Traditional dishes are prepared over an open wood fire, and you can enjoy your meal in the dining area or among the garden. With specialties including six-hour smoked chicken, sticky bamboo rice, crispy papaya, Lomak and pineapple salad, savour the authentic taste of the vibrant flavours from the very garden that surrounds you.

Explore more (on land)

Once you’ve ticked off the main tourist attractions of the area, take your time to uncover some of the other wonders of Flores.

Stretch your legs with a hike out to one of the many waterfalls. Cunca Wulang Waterfall is nestled within the tropical rainforest, and accessed by a hike from Wesawe village. Trek past picturesque views of rice fields, discover local vegetation including vanilla, coffee and cacao before reaching the canyon and taking a dip into the clear fresh water.

Explore more (underground)

Just four kilometres from town, Goa Batu Cermin (Mirror Stone Cave) is a tunnel in Labuan Bajo's stone hills. The cave features tiny holes that reflect light throughout the cave, as well as visible fossils on the cave wall and a local bat colony.

Goa Rangko (Rangko Cave) is a stunning limestone cave with a sunlit blue hue, perfect for swimming. It’s accessible only by a 10-minute boat ride from Rangko Village, a 30-minute drive from Labuan Bajo.

Explore more (underwater)

For those looking to dive a little deeper, the area is brimming with dive sites, 54 of them to be exact, and is home to one of the most diverse and vibrant underwater ecosystems. Spot reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, thorny seahorses, and (potentially one of the main draw cards to the area), various types of rays including manta rays and eagle rays.

Whether you’re a beginner looking to get certified, or an experienced open-water diver, with nearly 50 dive centres and a range of day trips to overnight excursions, you’ll be spoilt for choice regardless of your experience level.
