38 Special is an American rock band, formed back in 1974, in Jacksonville, Florida. The band was formed by Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant who met while living next to each other. After playing in clubs between the period from 1975 to 1976, 38 Special finally met with Peter Rudge , who was the manager of the well-known rock band The Who , who set them up to open shows for major artists such as Kiss , Foghat, and Peter Frampton . In May 1977, they released their debut, self-titled album. They have released eleven more albums since then, with their Drivetrain, released in 2004, being their most recent one. The band has changed its member line-up a few times over the years. Some of their greatest hits include Back Where You Belong and You Keep Runnin’ Away.

Barry Dunaway

Barry is previously best known for his work with Swedish heavy-metal guitar virtuoso, Yngwie Malmsteen . In the late 1980’s & ‘90’s, Barry performed on nine of Malmsteen’s albums—two of which have gold status in Japan, “Facing the Animal” and “ Alchemy ”.

Also to his credit, Barry has four world tours with Malmsteen. Other notable bands include Riggs, Whiteface, Joe Lynn Turner, Saraya, The Pat Travers Band and Survivor. Barry has also been a prominent member of Voices of Classic Rock/Rock & Pop Masters which was a collaboration of many rock legends such as Ronnie Hammond-(Atlanta Rhythm Section); John Cafferty-(Beaver Brown Band); Bill Champlin-(Chicago); Steve Augeri (Journey); Mike Reno - (Loverboy); Glen Hughes-(Deep Purple); Alex Ligertwood-(Santana) and many others.

Along the way, through his friendship with many amazing artists, Barry has also been a proud member of the American Airlines All-Star Band which benefits Susan B. Koman for the Cure and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. While not on tour, Barry is producing several projects in his home studio in St. Augustine,FL. Jerry Riggs

Jerry has been an old friend of the band for many years and comes with an impressive pedigree as a titan in the southern rock field, a virtuoso guitarist and vocalist with a long history as a recording artist and bandleader in his own right. Jerry was signed by Irving Azoff in 1981 to contribute songs and sequential music for the platinum-selling soundtrack album from the movie “Heavy Metal.” 

This led to additional work contributing songs for the Warner Brothers movie, “ Nightshift .”

As lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter for his band RIGGS, Jerry secured a record deal with Warner Brothers Records in 1982 and released his eponymous album, following it up with a year touring throughout the U.S. as special guest on the Rush “Moving Pictures ” tour. 

In 1983, Jerry was invited to join up with the Pat Travers Band and toured worldwide with him for 10 years from 1983-1993.

Jerry has shared the stage with many icons of rock over the years and played with over 100 different recording artists, many who were Grammy winners.

He was profiled in Vintage Guitar Magazine in 2016 as a legendary artist maintaining his passion and fiery style. He has already made an intense impact on the band and can bring the heat to what is shaping up to be a group of legendary players.

38 Special is an American rock band that was born in 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida, and that is still in activity today.

38 Special Band Formation Over the Years

38 Special is a band that has seen its fair share of changes in its line-up since its genesis up until its more recent years. Stick around to find out how they’ve gone from their original formation to the band we know today.

When 38 Special was born, the original members were Don Barnes (Lead Vocals, Guitar), Donnie Van Zant (Lead Vocals), Jeff Carlisi (Guitar), Ken Lyons (Bass), Jack Grondin (Drums), and Bobby Capps (Keyboards).

The core of the band was the Barnes/Van Zant duo, who were already childhood friends. Even though they struggled a bit to find a combination that worked, when Jeff Carlisi stepped in as their guitarist, the band eventually found their signature sound, which was a fusion of Southern rock with influences from AOR (Album-oriented rock).

With this formation, they released  38 Special  (1977),  Special Delivery  (1978), and  Rockin’ into the Night  (1979).

Between 1980 and 1984, the band suffered a few changes in their formation, namely in the bass and drums departments.

Larry Junstrom  came in to replace Ken Lyons on the bass guitar, and  Steve Brookins  replaced Jack Grondin on the drums, albeit temporarily.

During these years, they released three albums, Wild-Eyed Southern Boys in 1981, Special Forces in 1982, and Tour de Force in 1983. These records contain singles like “Hold On Loosely”, “If I’d Been the One” and “Caught Up in You”, which helped them grow their reputation, fanbase, and reach.

Don Barnes’ Hiatus and Other Replacements: 1984-1987

The most significant event of the period between 1984 and 1987 is undoubtedly Don Barnes’ hiatus, who stepped away and was replaced by Danny Chauncey on the guitar.

Max Carl was also welcomed into the band, replacing  Bobby Capps on the keyboards, who had been there since the original formation.

Lastly,  Jack Grondin , their original drummer, came back and replaced  Steve Brookins , who had been playing with 38 Special since 1980.

During this time, the band released the album Strength in Numbers  (1986), and their first live album,  Wild Eyed And Live!  (1984).

Don Barnes’ Return: 1987-1992

This period’s main highlight is the return of Don Barnes , who had previously stepped away in 1984. He took the wheel again as lead singer and guitarist, and the band released two records,  Rock & Roll Strategy  (1988), which featured the hit song “Second Chance”, and Bone Against Steel  (1991).

Since 1992, the only band member who has been replaced was  Jack Grondin , their original drummer who had already stepped away once.  Gary Moffatt  has been 38 Special’s drummer since then.

This line-up is featured on three studio records: Resolution  (1997),  A Wild-Eyed Christmas Night  (2001), and  Drivetrain  (2004).

They have also released three live albums recorded at performances in the USA:  Live at Sturgis  (1999),  Live – Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, New York 01/29/85 , and  Live From Texas  (2011).

In 1974, the band 38 Special was born, but this wasn’t the first attempt of their members to form a successful group. This was supposed to be their “last shot” at making it big.

After spending their first three years grinding as much as they could, perfecting their sound, compositions, and live performances, Donnie Van Zant’s brother (Ronnie Van Zant, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s original lead vocalist) gave them a hand and set them up with Peter Rudge, who at the time was Skynyrd’s manager, as well as other bands such as The Who, and The Rolling Stones.

This was a huge step up for 38 Special, as they had gone from playing small venues in the South and Midwest of the USA to opening shows for renowned and popular artists such as Foghat, Kiss and Peter Frampton.

At the same time, Rudge managed to get 38 Special a record deal with A&M Records. Dan Hartman was the producer of their debut album,  .38 Special , which came out in May 1977. This record had two singles, “Long Time Gone”, and “Tell Everybody”. Neither of them charted, but the band was still finding their place in the music industry, as this was their first time around the rodeo.

During the same year, the group saw two female singers added to their line-up, Carol Bristow and Dale Krantz, the latter being replaced by Nancy Henderson a couple of years later. The same spot was filled by Lu Moss and Lynn Hineman until the band decided to drop the backing vocalists completely.

In October 1977, the accident in which several Lynyrd Skynyrd members tragically died took place, taking the life of Ronnie Van Zant, Donnie’s older brother. Donnie wrote “Take Me Back”, a tribute to him, which was featured on 38 Special’s second studio album, Special Delivery , released in March 1978.

38 Special’s early years were important, eventful, and they defined the path that the band would take over the course of their career. Even though the original formation did not last for a long time, they managed to evolve and adapt to the music industry around them, allowing them to break through and write hit songs that are still remembered today.

38 Special’s Greatest Hits and Their Success

38 Special has a vast catalog of singles and albums that spans several genres, as the group matured their sound and perfected their blend of Southern rock with a Pop-oriented flavor.

In this short list, I’m going to cover a few of their most famous songs, but keep in mind that there is much more to explore from their discography as it’s impossible to discuss everything in a short amount of tunes.

“Second Chance” (1988)

38 Special’s “Second Chance” is one of the best examples of how the band managed to fuse their influences, while still pursuing a signature sound that defined them as a whole.

This kind of confidence and authenticity made “Second Chance” their biggest hit of all time. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts and No. 6 on Billboard Hot 100 Music charts.

• “Rockin’ into the Night” (1980)

This song gives the name to their 1980 record, and even though it didn’t do as good as “Second Chance” judging by how high it charted, it is one of the most celebrated songs from the group.

It is worth highlighting that you can hear Billy Powell, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s pianist on this album.

“Caught Up In You” (1982)

You can listen to “Caught Up In You” on 38 Special’s 1982 release  Special Forces. 

Written by Don Barnes, Jeff Carlisi, and Jim Peterik, his was their first Top 10 of the Hot 100 release.

Jim Peterik is also well-known for being one of the founding members of Survivor, who wrote “Eye of the Tiger”, featured on the film Rocky III .

• “Hold On Loosely” (1981)

“Hold On Loosely” is featured on the album  Wild-Eyed Southern Boys,  released in 1981.

It charted as No. 27 on Billboard Hot 100, paving the way for their future releases which would be even more successful.

In any case, “Hold On Loosely” is widely regarded as one of the biggest fan favorites of 38 Special, earning its spot on this list.

• “Wild-Eyed Southern Boys” (1981)

The title track for 38 Special’s 1981 release is one of their most recognizable songs.

Just like “Caught Up In You”, it was also written by Jim Peterik, who is behind many Classic Rock anthems alongside bands such as Cheap Trick, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and REO Speedwagon.

This song features a groovy intro with guitar and drums before the rest of the band jumps in. The Southern rock influence is there, but at this point, 38 Special is already starting to realize that its sound encompasses more than just that.

Answer:  The name “38 Special” came about after a peculiar incident that happened while the band was rehearsing in a warehouse in a remote location. The police were notified because of the noise, and upon arriving, they noticed that the band was unable to leave said warehouse due to a padlock. One of the officers then said “That’s all right. We’ll let this .38 special do the talking”, just before shooting off the lock.

Answer: Donnie Van Zant, 38 Special’s lead vocalist and guitarist from 1974 to 2013, is the younger brother of Ronnie Van Zant, one of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s founding members.

38 Special rocks! They opened for Kansas so did an abbreviated show, but played songs nonstop to get every minute of music in for the crowd going crazy for each song.

Will be looking for their next show nearby. Definitely worth seeing!!

Great music and showmanship. Sounds as good now as they did back in the day!!

Could have played a little longer and performed an encore or two. The guys still have what it takes to put on a good performance.

38 Special put on a great show! Don Barnes voice has held up very well. New band is faithful to the music and reproduce the sound well. Did a fantastic cover of Feeling Stronger Every Day! They ALSO played my all time favorite 38 Special song, Chain Lightning, which rocked the house. I knew going in I would like the show, but I came out thinking it was in my top 10 all time concerts. They were on my bucket list and well worth the wait. Definitely a must see if you get a chance!

38 Special was formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1974. The band carved a niche for itself in the music industry with its unique blend of Southern rock and arena rock. For a long time they stood in the shadow of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers Band. However, that all changed in the 1980s. The band released its first single, “Long Time Gone,” in 1975, followed by their self-titled debut album in 1977. Over the years, 38 Special has released a total of 15 studio albums, multiple EPs, several live albums, and numerous compilation albums.

Don Barnes is a founding member of 38 Special , having started with the band when it formed in 1974. He is known for his roles as lead vocalist and guitarist, and he also plays harmonica, mandolin, and keyboards. Barnes was with the band during its rise to fame in the 1980s, contributing significantly to albums like “Rockin’ into the Night,” “Wild-Eyed Southern Boys,” and “Special Forces,” which included hits such as “Hold On Loosely” and “Caught Up in You.” He temporarily left the band in 1987 to pursue a solo career and released an album in the late ’80s that didn’t achieve the expected success. Barnes returned to 38 Special in 1992 and has been with the band ever since, continuing to tour and record new music. His distinctive voice and guitar work remain integral to the band’s sound.

Bobby Capps

Bobby Capps first joined 38 Special as a touring keyboardist and backing vocalist in 1987, stepping in to fill the gap left by Barnes and others over the years. In 1992, he became a full-time member of the band. Capps has contributed to the band’s studio albums since the early ’90s, including “Resolution” and “Drivetrain.” His keyboard skills and vocal abilities have added depth to the band’s music, complementing their Southern rock sound. Outside of 38 Special, Capps is known for his work with other musicians and bands, showcasing his versatility as a keyboardist in various music genres.

Gary “Madman” Moffatt

Gary “Madman” Moffatt took over as the drummer for 38 Special in 1996, bringing a new energy to the band’s rhythm section. Moffatt’s experience and style have contributed to the band’s live performances and studio recordings for over two decades. Prior to joining 38 Special, Moffatt was known for his work with other bands, where he earned his nickname “Madman” due to his intense and energetic drumming style. His arrival coincided with a period of transition for the band, and he has since become a staple of their sound.

Barry Dunaway

Barry Dunaway joined 38 Special as the bassist and backing vocalist in 2014, although he had previously toured with the band as a substitute in 2011 and 2013. His experience with the band before becoming a full member helped ensure a smooth transition. Dunaway brought with him a wealth of experience from playing with other well-known artists and bands, contributing to a solid foundation for 38 Special’s rhythm section. His ability to provide both strong backing vocals and bass lines has enhanced the band’s live performances and studio recordings.

Jerry Riggs

Jerry Riggs became the lead guitarist for 38 Special in 2019, adding his unique flair to the band’s signature Southern rock sound. Riggs, known for his impressive guitar skills and backing vocals, has a rich history in the music industry, having played with numerous bands and artists over the years. His addition to 38 Special has brought a fresh energy to the band’s performances, and he quickly became an integral part of their sound. Donnie van zant.

Donnie Van Zant was a key figure in 38 Special, serving as a lead and backing vocalist and guitarist from the band’s formation in 1974 until his departure in 2013. Van Zant’s distinctive voice and energetic stage presence played a significant role in defining the band’s sound and style, contributing to their success in the Southern rock genre. He was involved in the creation of many of the band’s hit albums and songs, leaving a lasting legacy with his contributions. After leaving 38 Special in 2013 due to health reasons, Van Zant’s influence on the band and the Southern rock scene remains notable.

Jeff Carlisi

Jeff Carlisi, as the original lead guitarist for 38 Special from 1974 to 1997, was instrumental in crafting the band’s signature guitar sound. His solos and riffs are central to many of 38 Special’s most memorable tracks. Carlisi’s musicianship helped propel the band to major success in the 1980s, with a string of hits that blended rock with a touch of Southern flavor. Jack Grondin

Jack Grondin played a crucial role as one of the original drummers and percussionists in 38 Special from the band’s inception in 1974 until 1991. Grondin’s tenure included the recording of several of the band’s classic albums, where his drumming was a key element of their energetic performances. Steve Brookins

Steve Brookins was another original member of 38 Special, serving alongside Jack Grondin as a drummer and percussionist from 1974 to 1987. His dynamic playing style contributed to the band’s driving rhythm section during their rise to fame in the late 70s and early 80s. Brookins’ work is featured on many of 38 Special’s early albums, which remain favorites among fans of Southern rock. Post-38 Special, Brookins has continued to be involved in music, showcasing his talents in various projects.

Ken Lyons was the bassist for 38 Special from the band’s formation in 1974 until 1977. His bass playing provided the groundwork for the band’s early sound, contributing to their initial albums and helping to establish their presence in the rock music scene. Lyons’ departure in 1977 marked the end of his direct involvement with the band, but his contributions to those early years left a mark on their music. Lyons passed away in 2012, but his legacy with 38 Special lives on through the music they created together.

Larry Junstrom

Larry Junstrom joined 38 Special in 1977, taking over the bass duties from Ken Lyons, and remained with the band until his retirement in 2014. His bass playing was a backbone of the band’s sound for nearly four decades, providing the solid rhythm foundation that 38 Special’s music is known for. Junstrom’s tenure with the band saw them through their most successful periods, including the creation of their biggest hits. Before joining 38 Special, Junstrom was a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, although he did not record with them. His passing in 2019 marked the end of an era for fans of classic Southern rock.

Steve McRay

Steve McRay joined 38 Special in 1986 as a keyboardist, harmonica player, and backing vocalist, contributing to the band’s evolving sound during a transitional period. His tenure, though brief, lasting until 1987, saw him participate in live performances and possibly influence the band’s musical direction with his versatile skills. After his time with 38 Special, McRay continued to have a successful career as a musician, playing with various artists and bands and showcasing his talent in both live performances and studio sessions.

Max Carl became a part of 38 Special in 1987, bringing his talents as a lead and backing vocalist, keyboardist, and guitarist to the band. Carl’s arrival coincided with a shift in the band’s lineup and sound, contributing to a more mainstream rock approach during his tenure, which lasted until 1992. His distinctive voice and musicianship played a key role in the band’s late ’80s and early ’90s recordings, including the hit “Second Chance.” Carl’s career outside of 38 Special includes significant contributions to other bands and projects, further establishing him as a respected figure in the rock music scene.

Danny Chauncey

Danny Chauncey joined 38 Special in 1987 as the lead guitarist, also providing backing vocals and keyboard work. His tenure with the band, extending until 2019, made him a key figure in 38 Special’s sound for over three decades. Chauncey’s guitar work and musical contributions were integral to the band’s recordings and live performances during this period, helping to define their sound in the years following the band’s commercial peak. His musicianship and versatility were instrumental in sustaining the band’s popularity and relevance in the changing music landscape.

Scott Meeder

Scott Meeder was part of 38 Special as the drummer and percussionist from 1991 to 1992, a brief but significant period that saw him contribute to the band’s rhythm section. Though his time with the band was short-lived, Meeder’s involvement came at a time of change for 38 Special, as they continued to tour and record new music. Following his stint with the band, Meeder continued his career in the music industry, showcasing his drumming skills with various artists and projects.

Scott Hoffman

Scott Hoffman took on the role of drummer and percussionist for 38 Special from 1992 to 1997, contributing to the band’s live performances and recordings during the mid-1990s. His tenure with the band saw him become a part of 38 Special’s touring lineup, helping to maintain the high energy and tight rhythm section the band was known for. If you’ve never heard “Hold On Loosely” live, now is the time to change that .

This spring and summer, 38 Special will bring “Hold On Loosely” and all of their other signature hits — “Caught Up In You” anyone? — on their 19-concert tour all over North America.

From March 24 through Sept. 14, the classic rock legends will play plazas, state fairs, casinos, wineries, parks and amphitheaters from Texas to Massachusetts.

That includes a huge gig at Atlantic City’s Sound Waves at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on June 23.

Having formed nearly 50 years ago way back in 1974, one might expect that there’s been quite a bit of turnover since the band’s earliest days in Jacksonville, FL.

To get you up to speed, here’s a look at who you’ll see at 38 Special live shows in 2023.

Don Barnes (guitar/vocalist) is an original member of the group; he’s been playing with them since 1974.

Bobby Capps (keyboardist/vocalist) joined in 1987.

Gary Moffatt (drummer) became part of the band in 1996.

Barry Dunaway (bassist) started up in 2014.

Jerry Riggs (guitarist) is the newest 38 Special member; he debuted with the group in 2019.
