Discover a natural oasis surrounded by mangroves.

Surrounded by mangroves, the beautiful Yalahau Lagoon is a natural paradise worthy of admiration, and it separates Holbox Island from the mainland. On the shore of the lagoon is the famous Ojo de Agua — a bath in its refreshing crystalline water has vitalized the travelers who pass through here since the times of the ancient Maya.

The Yalahau Lagoon is a rich natural habitat that gives shelter to a number of species. It is home to the spectacular pink flamingos that come here to feed during the months of April to October. In the water of the lagoon, you can also see schools of fish and even dolphins swimming around the island.

Also on the lagoon is Morena Island, also called Isla Pájaros, which is the home of more than 140 species of birds that make their nests in it. It is common to find white ibis, frigate birds, white egrets, double-crested cormorants, white pelicans, red egrets, pink spoonbills, herons, gray pelicans, and pink flamingos, among others, on the island.

  • The island has a diameter of approximately 500 meters, and its floor is a mixture of sand and guano.
  • Isla Pájaros is a protected natural area, and it is not allowed to walk on it. It is only accessible by boat.
  • The birds that live there do not fear the proximity of humans, so it is possible to approach the island without disturbing its inhabitants.

Your last stop is Isla Pasión, a tiny little deserted beach full of bright pink seashells. Here, from the observation tower, you get a great view of the lagoon and Holbox. You may even see the remains of the turtle nursery once installed on Isla Pasión before returning to Holbox, with a full camera, ready to sit back and relax once again.

Isla Holbox Travel Logistics

Let’s start this guide to Holbox Island travel with the travel logistics.

Where is Holbox Island?

Isla Holbox is located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, on the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula . It is separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon that is home to flamingos, pelicans, and other birdlife.

The island is part of the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve and is known for its fishing industry and growing tourism, particularly for whale shark viewing.

Getting to Isla Holbox

From Cancun Airport, you can take an ADO Bus, a shared shuttle , a private shuttle , or an (expensive) taxi to Chiquilá, where you’ll board a 25-minute ferry to Isla Holbox for 220 Mexican Pesos.

Ferries run about every 30 minutes until 9pm, though note they are frequently late. If you stay in the Holbox Island town center, you’ll be able to easily walk to your hotel.

For instance, I stayed at Hotel Casa Bárbara Holbox and it was about a 5-minute walk, as you can see on the map below.

Pro tip: If the ADO Bus website isn’t working, you can also use BusBud to book tickets.

Best time to visit Holbox Island

With a tropical climate and consistently warm temperatures, Holbox is a year-round destination. That being said, not every month is created equal.

June through September

For most travelers, the best time to visit Isla Holbox is from June to September, which is also the optimal time to see and swim with whale sharks.

During these months, visitors can expect warm and sunny weather, though note this period also falls within the Caribbean hurricane season, increasing the likelihood of rain and storms, particularly towards the end of the season.

While sargassum seaweed levels can fluctuate, these months typically experience clearer waters.

Additionally, accommodation and flight prices tend to be cheaper due to this being part of the low season, and the island is generally less crowded.

December through April

Conversely, the high season from December to April attracts more tourists due to the dry weather, resulting in higher prices and busier beaches and streets—though you can certainly still have an amazing trip during this time.

For instance, I thoroughly enjoyed a trip to Isla Holbox in February, and the only thing I was disappointed by was that it was outside of whale shark season.

How to get around Holbox Island

Aside from a few work trucks, there are no cars on Isla Holbox—which helps to add to the relaxing vibe. Instead, you’ll see visitors and locals getting around by:

  • Foot. The Isla Holbox town center and main Playa Holbox beach area are very walkable.
  • Bike. If you’d prefer to get around faster, you can rent a bike from one of the local bike shops. Just beware of flooded streets, which can be an issue in Holbox and make it tricky to bike.
  • Golf cart. If you’re staying near the town center or main beachfront a golf cart isn’t necessary; however, one could be helpful if you’re looking to go to farther parts of the island like Playa Punta Cocos or Punta Mosquito.
  • Taxis. There are 4×4 taxis all over Isla Holbox that you can hail to get where you need to go.

woman gazing up at a palm tree on Playa Holbox

Is Isla Holbox Safe?

According to Travel Safe-Abroad , Isla Holbox is safe and your risk of being the victim of a violent crime or scam is low—though do be aware of potential dangers with weather events like hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes.

Personally, I felt very safe during my Isla Holbox trip, even when walking around at night. That being said, it’s always smart to keep travel safety tips in mind, even when visiting safe places.

For instance, I always travel with a few safety essentials like a She’s Birdie Personal Safety Alarm and Clever Travel Companion Pickpocket-Proof Garments .

Where To Stay In Isla Holbox

🏨 Mid-tier pick: Hotel Casa Bárbara Holbox

3 island tour isla holbox

If you’re more interested in hotels in Isla Holbox than hostels, this is where I stayed during my trip and loved it.

Situated along the main drag of Isla Holbox, just a 5-minute walk from the ferry, is Hotel Casa Bárbara Holbox—a boutique property that immerses you in nature.

The hotel offers garden-view patio as well as balcony-equipt rooms, an outdoor pool, and inviting communal areas in a tropical atmosphere.

Best Things To Do In Holbox Island

Wondering what to do on Holbox Island? There are many options!

Let’s dive into the best things to do on Isla Holbox. My top recommendations include:

1) Take a photo at the Holbox sign

Like many popular Mexican destinations, Isla Holbox has a colorful sign you can pose in front of.

Taking in the beauty of the beachfront and snapping a photo here is a great way to start your trip, especially as it’s one of the top Isla Holbox attractions!

three women posing in front of the Isla Holbox sign

2) Bike around Isla Holbox

As noted above, one of the best ways to get around Isla Holbox is by bike—though do check the conditions of the streets to see if they are flooded).

It’s a great way to reach some of the farther parts of the island, like Playa Punta Cocos and Punta Mosquito .

Alternatively, you can simply bike around without a plan and organically discover the beauty of the island.

There are numerous bike rental shops to choose from. Personally, I rented from Bikes Holbox , which is less than a 5-minute walk from Hotel Casa Bárbara Holbox.

3) Relax or walk the sandbar on Playa Holbox

When it comes to what to do in Holbox Mexico, spending time at the beach should be at the top of your list.

While there are several Isla Holbox beaches to enjoy, Playa Hobox is the main beach thanks to its central location walkable from the town center.

Here you’ll find soft white sand, translucent turquoise water, watersport options, and a lively atmosphere.

Additionally, at low tide, there is a sandbar that begins around the beach’s intersection with Av. Damero and goes out toward Mosquito Point. It’s a really beautiful and relaxing walk, even if you just do a little bit of it.

This beach also offers the perfect place to watch a stunning Isla Holbox sunset, so make sure to pack your camera along with your sunscreen!

Important note: There isn’t much shade here unless you pay to sit under an umbrella at one of the local beach clubs or bars. Because of this, make sure to bring sunscreen or a rashguard to cover up with.

4) Escape the crowds at Playa Punta Cocos

Another one of the best beaches in Holbox , particularly if you want to escape the crowds, is Playa Punta Cocos —a beautiful beach with powdery white sand on the northwest corner of the island.

Here you’ll enjoy more shade and a more serene experience, as most visitors don’t make the trek all the way out to this spot. It’s a 45-minute walk from Playa Holbox or a 20-minute drive.

You can also do a scenic 4-mile walk to Playa Punta Cocos from the town center. Click here for a trail map .

Along with being stunning during the day, this is also a great spot for an Isla Holbox sunset!

5) Enjoy the beauty of Punta Mosquito

This was one of my favorite places in Isla Holbox! Accessible via a scenic walk or bike ride along the beach from the main area of Holbox, Playa Mosquito Holbox offers breathtaking views of untouched coastline and shallow, crystal-clear waters.

Visitors can enjoy activities such as birdwatching, swimming in the shallow waters, and relaxing on the secluded beach away from the bustle of the main drag.

Note that you can also visit Punta Mosquito on a Classic 3 Island Tour , which I highly recommend!

woman in an orange bikini walking along Punta Mosquito beach in Holbox Island, Mexico

6) Take a Classic Three Island Tour from Isla Holbox

If you want to get out and really experience the beauty of Isla Holbox, a Classic 3 Island Tour is a must. During the excursion, you’ll travel by boat to visit:

Yalahau Lagoon. Located within Yum Balam Nature Reserve—which Isla Holbox is also a part of—you’ll swim and snorkel in a crystal clear cenote. Legend has it that pirates once used this cenote as a fresh water supply.

Mosquito Point (Punta Mosquito). On this gorgeous sandbar off the coast of Isla Holbox, you can go for a scenic walk along white sand or swim and relax in the warm azure Gulf of Mexico waters.

Passion Island (Isla De La Pasión). This stop also includes a stunning sandbar, as well as the opportunity to see a variety of birds—including flamingos!

Bonus. On the way from Mosquito Point to Passion Island, our group also had the pleasure of seeing dolphins hopping out of the water—which we were told was a rare sighting in February.

Note that at certain times of the year, you might also visit Bird Island (Isla Pájaros) instead of Punta Mosquito. Either way, we still passed by the island even though we didn’t stop there.

7) Kayak the mangroves of Isla Holbox

One of the top things to do in Holbox Island is explore the mangroves, which are also one of the most important places on the island.

They serve as a protective barrier against erosion and storms, provide habitat for diverse marine and bird species, and contribute to the overall health of the surrounding marine environment by filtering pollutants and serving as nurseries for marine life.

Kayaking through the mangroves is a majestic experience, as you paddle through calm waters enjoying the quiet (there are no motorboats aside for the occasional fisherman) while catching glimpses of birds like blue herons, egrets, frigates, eagles—and even other wildlife like crocodiles.

Note that self-guided kayaking is not allowed on Isla Holbox, so you’ll need to book a tour.

8) Swim & snorkel with whale sharks

When researching what to do in Isla Holbox Mexico that is truly unforgettable, this seasonal activity allows you to swim with the world’s largest fish species in their natural habitat.

From mid-May to mid-September, these gentle giants migrate to the waters around Isla Holbox to feed on plankton. It is incredible to witness this firsthand—though do make sure you’re only looking and not touching these wild animals to stay in line with best practices for ecotourism in Mexico .

Want to know more about whale shark season? Here is a quick look at the general calendar for seeing whale sharks in Isla Holbox:

May 15-June 10:

  • Weather: Acceptable
  • Sightings: Occasional

June 11-June 30:

  • Weather: Very good
  • Sightings: Frequent

July 1-August 31:

  • Weather: Excellent
  • Sightings: Very frequent

September 1-September 17:

  • Weather: Not so good

➡️ Click here for full details and to book your Whale Shark Excursion in Isla Holbox!

9) Take a bioluminescence kayak tour at night

For a meditative yet educational experience, an evening bioluminescence kayak tour is a must.

With the glow of the night stars illuminating your way, you’ll kayak to a nearby sandbar to enjoy the constellations and shooting stars. During my tour, our group even saw Mars!

Another highlight is of course seeing the bioluminescence in the water. This is due to the presence of microscopic organisms, such as dinoflagellates or plankton, that emit light when disturbed, creating a magical glowing effect in the water.

You’ll also have the chance to swim in the bioluminescence if you’d like, though I opted not to since it was 2am!

➡️ Click here for full details and to book an Isla Holbox Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour!

10) Enjoy kitesurfing & other water sports

While kayaking is forbidden unless you’re with a local guide, you can enjoy other water sports like standup paddle boarding, snorkeling, and kitesurfing.

The latter is particularly popular thanks to the island’s consistent and strong winds, shallow waters, and expansive beaches.

You’ll see many places offering lessons and rentals along the beach, or you can book a kitesurfing lesson in advance here .

11) Volunteer at a local animal shelter

Love animals and volunteering? Refugio Animal Holbox is a charitable organization that provides animals in need with a loving home until they can be adopted or re-integrated into the wild.

When visiting Isla Holbox, you can visit their animal rescue and help their staff out by:

  • walking dogs
  • bathing dogs
  • cleaning kennels, bowls, or the courtyard
  • playing with the dogs

They’re also always looking for donations as well as for people to adopt their pets!

12) Snorkel & fish on a trip to Cabo Catoche

If you’d like to visit one of Isla Holbox’s most rarely-visited places, book a boat trip to Cabo Catoche .

Located 15 miles east of Holbox and situated at the meeting point of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, you’ll enjoy stunning beaches and opportunities to snorkel and dive vibrant coral reefs teeming with aquatic life.

Also keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, nurse sharks, and sea turtles!

During a private boat tour to Cabo Catoche, you’ll also learn traditional fishing techniques—using lines without poles—to pull your own fresh catch. This will used to make a delicious ceviche lunch.

This Isla Holbox tour offers a great way to immerse yourself in local culture and explore almost untouched nature.

➡️ Click here for full details and to book a private tour to Cabo Catoche!

Pristine beach in Cabo Catoche with clear turquoise waters gently lapping against the sandy shore. A small boat is anchored close to the shoreline, and the beach is dotted with palm trees and sparse vegetation under a bright blue sky. The serene and untouched beauty of the beach is highlighted, perfect for a blog post about beaches in Holbox.

13) Get a spa treatment

Vacations to Isla Holbox aren’t complete without some relaxation, and what better way to unwind than with a spa treatment?

There are numerous spas on Isla Holbox, whether you want an al fresco beachfront massage, a treatment at a luxury spa, or something in between. Two top-rated spas to get on your radar include:

Aguas Spa. Located within the opulent Hotel Casa Las Tortugas , they offer a wide array of massages, body wraps, facials, water therapies, and signature treatments.

Bambú Spa. Located within the chill beachfront Casa Iguana Holbox , this spa has a simpler menu but you’ll still get a high-quality massage at a more budget-friendly price.

14) Take an active class

During my visit to Isla Holbox, I took a really fun salsa class at Che Holbox Hostel & Bar , though that’s hardly your only option.

Since Isla Holbox has a strong wellness culture, you’ll also find lots of yoga, Zumba, and fitness classes. A few places to check out include Samah Welln ess and Holbox Yoga (which does yoga on the beach!).

15) spend the day at a beach club.

On the northwest side of the island between Punta Mosquito and Playa Punta Cocos is a long strip of beautiful soft sand and azure warm waters.

While you can certainly lay out a towel to swim and sunbathe, a more fun option is to chill at one—or a few—of the many Holbox beach clubs and restaurants with in-the-sand seating along the strip.

My personal favorites when visiting Holbox were Mandarina Seaside Restaurant and Restaurante La Playa De Ñaña . These can be enjoyed whether you’re traveling with others or are on a solo beach trip .

In my experience, the farther west you go (toward Holbox town center) the friendlier and more affordable the establishment.

Pro tip: Make sure to stay for a stunning sunset, and have your camera ready to capture some spectacular colors!

16) Do a tequila tasting

At Tequila O’Clock, you can do a guided Tequila Tasting Experience .

The bar features over 50 tequilas and is owned by a local from the town of Tequila in Jalisco, where authentic tequila is made in Mexico .

During the tasting, you’ll sip a welcome cocktail as well as three tequilas made with 100% agave while learning how to properly appreciate and taste tequila. It’s a delicious way to explore local Mexican culture!

17) Explore Holbox’s cafe culture

Wondering what to do in Holbox when it rains? Here’s an idea!

On Isla Holbox, you’ll find loads of aesthetic cafes serving up delicious java drinks. A few of my top picks include:

Mr. Happy Holbox . Set up like a retro yet tropical apartment complete with palm trees, a box TV, and an analog clock, this open-air cafe offers a unique aesthetic as well as delicious coffee and food. I loved my baked eggs and cappuccino!

Painapol . This charming Holbox cafe is renowned for its strong coffee, beautifully plated smoothie bowls, and laid-back island atmosphere. They also have a talent for turning fruits into beautiful flower garnishes.

Clandestino Coffee Shop . Enjoy delicious coffee and pastries in a plant-filled space that will instantly help you relax and focus at the same time. My recommended order: avocado toast with matcha!

18) Order the famous Holbox Lobster Pizza

Along with tacos made with corn tortillas, my tour guide kept telling me about one food specialty I had to try: the famous Holbox Lobster Pizza.

One place known for it is Roots Pizza a la Leña , who cook their pizza in a wood-fired oven for a smokier taste.

Another top-rated spot to try lobster pizza is a local seafood restaurant called El Crustáceo Kascarudo . Here you’ll enjoy large chunks of lobster covered in melted cheese.

19) Go on a mission to find the best Isla Holbox tacos

There is an endless amount of delicious taco places on Isla Holbox, whether you’re looking for street stalls, a vibey space, or something in between.

My personal favorite tacos from my trip to Holbox Island were had at Barba Negra , which specializes in fish and shrimp tacos, which you can get in Baja, Mayan, or Garlic & Smoke style. The tortillas come out packed with ingredients, so you’ll definitely leave feeling full.

Pro tip: My local guide mentioned that in Holbox, tacos are made with corn tortillas, not flour tortillas, and are best paired with a bottle of Coca-Cola.

He also mentioned that if you want authentic local tacos, opt for places with less polish. As he put it, he knows a place is touristy when it feels “so clean”.

20) Pair food with good vibes at Isla Holbox restaurants

Wondering where to eat in Isla Holbox? You’ll have loads of options for delicious food!

Along with the above-mentioned Barba Negra , Roots Pizza a la Leña, and El Crustáceo Kascarudo , some of my favorite local eateries pairing yummy food with good vibes include:

Aluxes Holbox . This is one of the best restaurants in Isla Holbox, featuring tropical vibes, yummy food, and great drinks in a plant-filled space. I ordered the Pad Thai and a glass of wine which were both tasty and generous in size.

Crónicas Taproom . As a New Yorker, I know what good pizza tastes like, and Crónicas Taproom is it. Their pizza is Neapolitan-style, and I recommend ordering the “Kabalaza” featuring tomato sauce, mozzarella, zucchini, purple onions, mushrooms, olives, and chili flakes. Yum!

Arte Sano . If you’re looking for delicious vegan food in a stunning outdoor space, this Isla Holbox restaurant fits the bill, with a variety of smoothie bowls, veggie burgers, and Mexican staples made vegan.

Things To Do In Isla Holbox For Nightlife

21) sip drinks with a view at a holbox rooftop.

Along with delicious restaurants, Isla Holbox is also home to several beautiful rooftops and open-air higher-level eateries. Some of my personal favorites include:

Soulbox at Hotel Mittoz . This open-air rooftop features a view of the beach (albeit an obstructed one), a chill atmosphere, a small swimming pool, and great service. Our waiter even invited my group to a salsa class he was teaching the following night at Che Holbox Hostel, which we attended!

Lazaro Wine Bar . This trendy second-floor wine bar is incredibly vibey, with lots of bamboo pillars, plants, and dangling lights with macramé-style wood shades creating a soft yellow glow. My sauvignon blanc was delicious too!

Casa HX . At this Holbox rooftop, enjoy a tranquil ambiance, handcrafted cocktails, and panoramic views of Isla Holbox. I recommend getting one of their signature cocktails, like the “Nectar del Alma” with tequila blanco, blue curaçao, and melon liqueur, syrup, and egg white.

22) Party on the beach in Isla Holbox

While you’ll find plenty of bars on Holbox Island that stay open until at least 10pm or 11pm, if you’re looking for some late-night fun, you’ll need to know where to look.

Bikini Bottom Holbox . I passed this late-night beach club when returning from my Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour at around 3am and the party was still going. If you like to dance, they feature live DJs!

Cariocas Beach Bar. This fun palapa bar features live music and DJs and stays open until at least 3am. They often have promos too, like 2-for-1 margaritas, which they typically announce on their Instagram page .

The Hot Corner . While slightly removed from Playa Holbox by about a block, this open-air bar stays open until 2am and often has live music and other entertainment.

23) Enjoy live music

As the sun begins to set, there is no shortage of options for live music—whether you want to enjoy live music on the beach at Capitán Capitán Beach Club or an indoor show at Barbara Negra .

Simply wander the town and let the sounds coming from the many open-air eateries and bars be your guide.

A note on the Isla Holbox hammocks

While many Isla Holbox travel guides list relaxing in the famous Holbox Island hammocks as a must-have experience, most—if not all—of these have been removed for conservation reasons.

In fact, while I saw loads of hammocks directly on the beach, during my time in Isla Holbox I didn’t see any directly over the water.

Of course, there may have been some I missed, but either way, the ones you see in all of the photos have been removed.

Looking for an adventure in Isla Holbox that is sure to dazzle and delight? Look no further than the 3-island tour , a beloved boat excursion that offers an array of incredible experiences, from glimpsing stunning flamingos to soaking up the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the region. With its popularity, it’s no surprise that this tour is in high demand year-round. However, savvy travelers know that there are certain times when booking is particularly advantageous,

What Are The 3 Islands?

Before starting the tour, it’s important to get to Holbox first. The island is approximately 2.5 hours from Cancun and can be reached by various means of transportation including bus, private van or rental car. Upon arrival in Chiquila , travelers will take a 20-minute ferry ride to the tranquil Isla Holbox.

Once there, participants will be treated to an exciting motorboat ride that will take them to two secluded islands near Holbox : Isla de la Pasion and Isla Pajaros . In addition, the tour package includes admission to Yalahau , a small cenote located on the mainland and in close proximity to Chiquila , adding an extra element of excitement to the adventure.

Isla de la Pasion is a picturesque uninhabited island, and it is only through tours that one can appreciate the natural splendor of this protected place. Visitors can observe rare bird species from the observatory and stroll along the shoreline, enjoying the feeling of the crystal clear waters that surround this unique spot near Holbox.

Meanwhile, Isla Pajaros , also known as “Bird Island,” is another protected area that can only be accessed by boat. Travelers on these tours will have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of this extraordinary island, located about a 30-minute boat ride from the Holbox dock, and its many feathered inhabitants.

To increase your chances of seeing wild flamingos on your Holbox tour, it is recommended that you plan your trip between April and October, when these graceful birds typically flock to the protected island to feed.

Please note, however, that observing flamingos in their natural habitat cannot be guaranteed on a daily basis during this season. However, if you check with one of the guides the day before you book your tour, they should be able to give you a reasonably accurate estimate of your chances of seeing these amazing creatures.

Holbox Whale Shark Tour

Isla Holbox has been known for several years for the hundreds of whale sharks that regularly pass through from early June to mid-September to filter the plankton that is particularly abundant during this time. Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world and can grow up to 13 meters (43 feet) long in the Caribbean, weigh 12 tons and live up to 100 years . Despite their size, they are harmless to humans and other creatures because they feed exclusively on plankton, algae and small crustaceans.

By the way, the tours are strictly limited as the local conservation authorities are keen to minimize disturbance to the whale sharks in their natural habitat.

For whale shark watching, licensed guides take motorboats with a maximum of 10 people for 1-2 hours to specific spots on the open sea, mostly in the waters between Isla Holbox and Isla Mujeres. Once spotted, the boat will carefully approach a single or small group of whale sharks and you may swim with them for a while. Only two people and a guide are allowed in the water at any one time.

Whale sharks usually come to the surface in the morning and disappear in the afternoon. They follow the plankton as it rises to the surface towards the sun at noon and then sinks back to deeper water.

The following video from Maapalloilija shows how this tour works and what to expect:

Prices for a whale shark tour in Holbox start at 3,300 MXN (196 USD / 261 CAD / 153 GBP) per person for a group trip. Excursions are usually combined with snorkeling in Cabo Catoche, fishing, and bird and flamingo watching. The program is flexible, depending on how quickly whale sharks can be spotted and weather conditions. In any case, a tour lasts from early morning until late afternoon.

Prices vary depending on the size, comfort and speed of the boat, the number of people on board, the service and the quality of the guides. This is not the time to save money, this is a once in a lifetime experience .

Bioluminescence Tour at Night

Bioluminescence is the glowing of certain microorganisms swimming in the sea, triggered by a chemical reaction inside them when touched. Although the light emitted is weak and can only be seen at night, it is still a fantastic experience to swim in the glowing sea. The phenomenon of bioluminescence is particularly strong on Holbox Island between July and January , but tours take place at any time. The best conditions for observing the glowing plankton are around the new moon . Full moon nights are less suitable as it is too bright.

Bioluminescence Tour on Holbox island

Depending on the operator, the tour takes 1.5 to 2 hours, including transportation and guide. To get to the best spots for bioluminescence in Holbox , you paddle a kayak or paddleboard for about 30 minutes at night to a sandbank where there are no disturbing lights from roads or hotels. In addition to the bioluminescence, on clear nights you can also see the beautiful starry sky in the dark. If you don’t want to paddle a kayak, you can alternatively book a bioluminescence tour by golf cart.

Tip : Be sure to wear a good insect repellent.

Exact times depend on sunset and moonrise and will be advised at the time of booking. The night kayak tour costs from 1,000 MXN (59 USD / 79 CAD / 46 GBP), while the much shorter golf cart tour is available from 400 MXN (24 USD / 32 CAD / 19 GBP).

Fishing and Angling Tour

Holbox Island has always been known for its abundance of fish and this has hardly changed with the advent of soft tourism. There are small-scale fishing and fly-fishing excursions, as well as deep-sea fishing boat trips.

The simplest option is to travel in small groups on a fishing boat to specific spots in the surrounding waters and try your luck at fishing with a reel and hook . You don’t have to wait long for the first fish to nibble at the bait before pulling on the line with a powerful tug at just the right moment.

Fishing Tour Holbox Island

However, it sounds easier than it is. While you watch the captain pulling fish after fish out of the water, you won’t always be as good as he is due to lack of practice. Nevertheless, in the end you will catch enough fish to make a delicious ceviche . The excursion lasts 4 hours and can be booked at a group rate starting at about 1,000 MXN (59 USD / 79 CAD / 46 GBP).

A day trip of 7 to 8 hours is recommended for advanced or amateur fishermen . The fishing boat will take you out to the open sea to good fishing grounds where you can catch dorado, barracuda, trevally, fanfish, tarpon, wahoo and other large fish with professional equipment. Prices start at around 12,000 MXN (710 USD / 950 CAD / 560 GBP) for a boat with up to 6 people.

The 3 Island Tour Holbox

Excursion to isla pasión, isla pájaros and cenote yalahau.

This route is often called the “ Three Island Tour ” and is the classic Holbox tour offered by most operators. The inexpensive boat tour takes about 3.5 hours and is a great excursion for in-between in almost all weather conditions. The route takes you to the islands of Isla Pasión and Isla Pájaros as well as to the Cenote Yalahau on the mainland. The order is not always the same and depends on the tour operator. Due to the large crowds, the boat captains try to split up as much as possible so that not all the tourists are in one place at the same time.

Boat with tourists at the 3 Island Tour Holbox

The first stop of the Holbox 3 Island Tour is usually Isla de la Pasión , also known as Passion Island , a small, uninhabited and naturally protected island surrounded by sand with knee-deep water, original vegetation and fauna. It measures only 100 meters in diameter and is located in sight of the southwestern end of Holbox, where it is clearly visible from Punta Cocos and Punta Ciricote.

Isla Pasión has only a very small jetty , so the tour boats often drop tourists off at the other end of the island and pick them up again at the jetty after a short walk along the beach. There is a lookout tower from which you have a great view over to Isla Holbox. There used to be a turtle hatchery here, but it has since been abandoned. The stop at Passion Island lasts about 20 minutes, after which the tour continues to the next stop.

Isla Pasion at the 3 Island Tour Holbox

Isla Pájaros , also known as Bird Island , is an equally small and unspoiled island located a little further east and south of Holbox. In addition to pelicans , cormorants and flamingos , up to 35 different species of birds can be observed living and nesting here. There are two rickety but sturdy observation towers on the 500-meter island, connected by a wooden walkway. From there you have a good view of the wild hustle and bustle of the bird population. The island itself is not accessible, so the stay is quite short.

Isla Pajaros at the 3 Island Tour Holbox

At the end of the Holbox 3 Island Tour, the boat will take you to Cenote Yalahau , located on the mainland near Chiquilá. At this natural site there is a clear, cool freshwater pool called Hoyo Negro (Black Hole) where you can swim. There is also a snack bar on the grounds of Yalahau. Here you can buy snacks and refreshments. The entrance fee to Yalahau is 100 MXN (6 USD / 8 CAD / 5 GBP) and is charged separately for the mandatory life jackets and restroom facilities.

The water in the cenote is really cold because it is constantly coming up from underground. Especially at noon it is a welcome cool down and you can even see small colorful fish while snorkeling in the crystal clear water . However, it can get a bit crowded during the peak times of the day. Next to the cenote there is an observation tower from where you can see the surrounding jungle.

Cenote Yalahau at the 3 Island Tour Holbox

A special highlight of Yalahau is the presence of two Holbox crocodiles that settled here some time ago. At the border between the fresh water coming out of the cenote and the sea, many fish congregate, providing the crocodiles with a convenient and abundant source of food. When they are on the prowl, they can be seen hunting just a few meters from the tour boats . Apparently they have gotten used to the constant presence of tourists.

The 3 Island Tour Holbox can be booked twice a day , in the morning at 10:00 and in the afternoon at 14:00. It is recommended for an excursion in between, lasts 3.5 hours and costs from 750 MXN (44 USD / 56 CAD / 35 GBP) , depending on the operator and the service offered.

Mangrove Tour by Kayak

A very nice afternoon excursion into the winding mangrove landscape can be undertaken by kayak. An experienced nature guide takes you to the mouth of the Rio Kuka , where the tour through the lagoon begins. From the water, you have an ideal view of the mangrove vegetation and can observe many bird species and sometimes even crocodiles in peace and quiet.

Mangrove Kayak Tour on Holbox Island

Halfway through the 3-hour kayak tour, there is a stop for refreshments and snacks before returning to the mouth of the lagoon as the sun begins to set. For early risers, guided sunrise kayak tours are also available. Prices start at 1,000 MXN (59 USD / 79 CAD / 46 GBP).

Tip : In addition to swimwear and sunscreen, don’t forget to bring a good insect repellent.

Bird Watching Tours

Holbox and the surrounding area on the Yucatán Peninsula is a birdwatcher’s paradise and is part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve. More than 350 species of birds live here in the lagoons, by the sea, on sandbars and in the jungle, where they can be observed in their natural habitat. The most famous birds are flamingos, pelicans, frigate birds, herons and gulls , but many endemic species nest here that are difficult to see elsewhere.

Birdwatchers who want to take advantage of this unique opportunity can book several bird watching tours. These are organized by Holbox Birding Tours and cover a variety of areas. The tours, which can be booked individually, take participants to nesting sites on Holbox Island or to Chiquilá, as well as to the lagoons and cenotes of the nearby towns of Solferino, San Angel and Kantunilkín.

Tours are led by certified naturalist guides and cost 100-120 USD (135-160 CAD / 79-93 GBP) depending on the route.

Tour Operator : Holbox Birding Tours (+529841646324)

Cabo Catoche Tour

Sailing east along the north coast of Holbox Island for about 35km (19 nautical miles), you will reach the cape of the island of the same name, Cabo Catoche. This partially inhabited place offers pristine beaches and a coral reef , as well as ruins with an interesting history. In 1517, the first Europeans landed here on an expedition from Cuba when they were washed ashore during a storm. Legend has it that the first contact with the indigenous Maya led to language difficulties, resulting in the name Yucatán.

The coral reef at Cabo Catoche, which is only two meters deep, is excellent for snorkeling . You can see sea turtles, octopus, lobsters and sometimes even harmless nurse sharks in the colorful underwater landscape. Afterwards you can take a walk on the beach or relax in the shade while a delicious ceviche is prepared. The boat trip takes about 6 hours and costs from 1.500 MXN (90 USD / 120 CAD / 70 GBP).

Tour Operators : Grupo Cadu , Holbox Adventure

Boat Trip to Isla Contoy

A little further away is the National Park of Isla Contoy . The uninhabited island is located 30 km (19 miles) north of Isla Mujeres and can be reached by boat from Holbox in 2 hours. It is 8 km (5 miles) long, 500 m (0.3 miles) wide, is home to numerous species of birds and sea turtles , and offers amazing coral reefs . The island has a beautiful beach, a jetty for boats and a museum with a lookout tower that offers a fantastic view. Visits to Contoy Island are limited to a maximum of 200 people per day in order to protect the pristine nature.

The tour lasts 8 hours and includes lunch and drinks. As an individual, the excursion costs from USD 200 (267 CAD / 157 GBP). It is cheaper if you book a private tour as a group of 6 or more people.

Tip : It is definitely worth visiting the island, but it is much better in terms of time and money to start the tour from Cancún or Isla Mujeres, as the boat ride to Isla Contoy is much shorter from there.

Tour Operators : There are currently no operators offering this tour from Holbox (as of April 2024). Several tours to Isla Contoy from Cancún are offered online at GetYourGuide .

Is Holbox Worth Visiting in 2024? Travel Guide + Tips

Wondering if Holbox is worth visiting on your next trip to Mexico? You’re in the right place!

Isla Holbox is a small island off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. While it isn’t the easiest place to get to, this tropical island is undoubtedly worth all the trouble.

As a travel blogger that lives in nearby Playa del Carmen , I’ve visited Isla Holbox several times and am here to let you in on what it’s really like.

In this post, I’ll discuss why Isla Holbox is worth visiting , the best things to do there, and who Holbox is most suited for.

I’ll also review important safety information, how to get to Holbox, and other travel tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Ready to find out everything you need to know about visiting Holbox Island? Let’s get going with this Isla Holbox travel guide!

Is Holbox Worth Visiting?

Yes, Holbox is definitely worth visiting! Without a doubt, it’s a beautiful tropical island with stunning beaches and is one of the best-kept secrets in Mexico.

When compared to other Mexican islands like Isla Mujeres or Cozumel , Holbox is more off-the-beaten-path, with its dirt roads, lack of cars, and small downtown area.

But travelers should be prepared to disconnect in Holbox, as the island is still largely undeveloped and lacks stable infrastructure and strong wifi.

However, this admittedly adds to the island’s charm, along with its laid-vibe and untouched tropical atmosphere.

And what I really love about Holbox is the gorgeous beaches with seemingly endless shallow waters–it honestly feels like a dream!

And even if you don’t want to spend your entire vacation under a palm tree on the beach, Holbox offers several other unique activities like bioluminescence tours , snorkeling with whale sharks , and kayaking excursions .

Is Holbox Safe to Visit?

Yes, Holbox is safe to visit . It’s a small island with a small population and few reported crimes.

I’ve always felt very safe walking around Holbox and have never felt uncomfortable–it’s quite the opposite.

Most people are extremely friendly, whether serving you a drink or walking by on the sandy street.

Holbox feels like a breath of fresh air after spending time in Playa del Carmen or Cancun. There are much fewer issues with cartels, and it feels like even fewer scams.

Holbox Travel Advisory

Officially, the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory for Holbox is currently listed as a “ Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution ”.

However, this travel advisory is for the entire state of Quintana Roo, which includes nearby destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen , and Tulum.

While Holbox is arguably one of the safest tourist destinations in Quintana Roo, you should still practice basic street smarts when traveling.

For example, don’t leave your personal belongings unattended at the beach, stay aware of your surroundings, and don’t spend time on the beach alone after dark.

Do you need travel insurance for Mexico? Yes! Most insurance plans in your home country will not cover incidents abroad. I recommend using Travel Insurance Master, which is a handy travel insurance marketplace where you can compare policies. Get a FREE quote by clicking here !

What is Holbox Like?

At approximately 26 miles (42 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, Holbox is a cute and colorful tropical island.

The main tourist area is centered around a small town square, that’s surrounded by just a few blocks.

What most people don’t realize is that most of the island is not inhabited, which makes it feel a lot smaller than it is.

And probably the most noteworthy thing about Holbox is that there are no paved roads and very few cars, adding to its very laid-back vibe.

Instead, you’ll find beefed-up golf carts with four-wheel tires that are built to handle the muddy roads during the rainy season.

You can easily walk almost anywhere on the island, but to reach some of the more remote hotels, you can also rent bicycles or take one of the many golf cart taxis.

The island is also known for its shallow, crystal-clear water and incredible white sand beaches.

The main stretch of beach is lined with beach bars, beach clubs, and little kiosks selling day trips and tours.

Reasons to Visit Holbox Island Mexico

Here are 5 reasons to visit Holbox:

  • Beautiful beaches with shallow waters : Holbox isn’t extensive, but the main beach, Playa Holbox, is a mile-long stretch of sand with beautiful, shallow waters. Holbox honestly has some of the best beaches in Mexico and it’s the perfect place to unwind and soak up the sun.
  • Laid back vibes : Holbox definitely feels like a welcome escape from the busy nearby tourist destinations like Cancun or Playa del Carmen . It’s generally much quieter, but there’s still plenty to do.
  • Bioluminescence : Holbox is one of the few places in the world that is home to bioluminescent plankton, which creates a stunning natural light show in the water at night. You can take a night bioluminescence tour on a boat or kayak and enjoy the glowing waters around you.
  • Lively nightlife : Despite the low population and laid-back atmosphere, Holbox has surprisingly good nightlife for such a small island. There are only a handful of bars and clubs, but they become packed at night, often with live music, especially during peak season.
  • Birdwatching : Holbox is part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve and is an island paradise for people who love birdwatching and nature activities. There’s a 3-island tour that practically guarantees you’ll see some flamingos and includes a stop at an island completely overrun by hundreds of different species of birds.

Who is Holbox Best Suited For?

Even though Holbox has a low-key vibe, it’s perfect for many different types of travelers.

Solo travelers love Holbox because it’s a great place to meet people, especially if you stay at one of the hostels downtown or even one of the boutique hotels near the beach.

It’s also great for couples and families, as it’s considered relatively safe, and there are many different activities for everyone, ranging from beach and water sports to boat tours.

Holbox is particularly appealing to those who want to spend time relaxing on the beach or step out of their comfort zone and experience something more authentic.

It’s also highly recommended for nature lovers because you have incredible bioluminescent waters at night and several islands with tons of birds and other exotic wildlife nearby.

Where is Holbox?

Isla Holbox Mexico is located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, on the northern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The best way to get to Holbox is to travel by ferry or boat from Chiquila.

Chiquila is a small town, with not much there except a few restaurants, parking lots, and, of course, the ferry terminal to Holbox.

Chiquila is about 2 hours from both Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and Holbox is a 30-minute ferry ride from Chiquila.

How to Get to Holbox

Due to its remote location, getting to Holbox takes a bit more work but it’s still pretty straightforward once you know what you’re doing.

Fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN)

The first thing you’ll do is fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN). This is the largest airport in the region and very conveniently located just outside of Cancun.

From Cancun Airport, it’s easy to get to almost anywhere else in the Yucatan Peninsula or anywhere you’d like to go.

Drive from Cancun International Airport to Chiquila

Next, you’ll drive from Cancun International Airport to Chiquila.

Chiquila is about 90 miles (145 km) from Cancun Airport, and the drive usually takes just under 2 hours. There’s one main highway leaving Cancun and usually not too much traffic.

If you don’t have a car, Cancun Airport Transportation offers private airport transportation directly to Chiquila. There are also shared shuttles from Cancun airport to Chiquila.

Additionally, you can also take an ADO bus from downtown Cancun to Chiquila. The bus usually takes just over two hours and drops you off at the ferry port to Holbox.

Take the Ferry from Chiquila to Isla Holbox

Once you’re in Chiquila, all you have to do is head to the ferry terminal on the water. There’s one main road in Chiquila, and it leads you directly to the ferry terminal.

There are several overnight parking lots around the ferry terminal. And if you’re traveling with a larger group, you can take a private boat over the Isla Holbox rather than the ferry.

Several little booths near the ferry terminal allow you to book your boat tickets if you decide on this route over the ferry.

The ferry terminal in Isla Holbox is about a 15-minute walk from downtown Holbox and the main beach. You can walk or take one of the golf cart taxis, usually waiting near the ferry terminal.

Note : If you’re traveling to Holbox from Playa del Carmen , you can drive directly there, take a private shuttle, or take an ADO bus to the ferry terminal in Chiquila.

Best Time to Visit Holbox

The best time to visit Holbox is between December and April. The weather is much cooler during these months, with little chance of rain.

Peak season is at the end of December through the holidays, and things can get a little expensive and crowded during these months.

Summer months are usually more affordable and less crowded, but it gets humid and sometimes unpleasant. Few stores, restaurants, and even some hotels don’t have good air-conditioning.

Hurricane season and rainy season in the Yucatan Peninsula and Gulf of Mexico are June through November.

Travelista Tip: I know this isn’t always feasible, but if you can, keep an eye on the weather and avoid traveling to the island if the weather doesn’t look too great.  When it rains in Holbox, the roads get extremely muddy and flooded and there isn’t much to do.

Is Holbox Expensive?

Holbox is one of the more expensive destinations in Mexico but it can still be very affordable depending on your travel style.

Its remote location makes the prices for food, groceries, and drinks a bit more expensive.

But if you’re on a budget, you can definitely still find cheap hostels, street food, or local Holbox restaurants to make Holbox more affordable.

And if you have a higher budget, you can definitely find boutique luxury hotels and upscale restaurants to splurge at.

I have also found that most tours and excursions in Holbox are pretty affordable, so that’s another way to save money.

Best Things to Do in Holbox

If you’re wondering what to do in Holbox , here are 5 of the best things to do:

Spend a Day at the Beach

Holbox is known for its beautiful beaches, so it would be a shame to go to this tiny island and miss out on spending a day at the beach!

The beach is right past the main square, so it’s easy to find and close to almost everything.

Holbox beach stretches for a mile, so you can easily find a spot in the sun. Or you can visit one of the Holbox beach clubs for lounge chairs and food and beverage service.

But the best thing about Holbox beaches is the shallow turquoise waters–you can wade out a great distance without fighting with waves or deep drop-offs.

And if the weather is nice, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard from one of the beach shacks along the beach.

Travelista Tip: Holbox is also the perfect place to watch a gorgeous Caribbean sunset. Make sure to find your spot at least a half hour before the sun sets to get a good view.

Swim with Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence is a chemical process that makes organisms (jellyfish, fish, fungi, and even insects) emit light.

It can be compared to seeing a firefly light up the sky in the dead of the night, but bioluminescence on Holbox occurs along the shoreline and in the water.

Holbox is one of the few places in the world that has bioluminescent plankton so this shouldn’t be missed!

The best way to see it is by booking a Holbox bioluminescence tour , which will take you snorkeling or kayaking at night with a group of people.

Go on the Three-Island Tour

The Three-Island Tour is a popular Holbox boat tour from the ferry terminal in Holbox to visit 3 different nearby islands.

The first stop is usually Punta Mosquito, where you can find wild flamingos and other birds.

Next, you visit Isla Pasion, an uninhabited island with a tropical beach surrounded by palm trees and lush vegetation.

Afterward, you go to Isla Pajaros, an uninhabited island with dozens of birds. You’ll also stop in at Yalahau, where you’ll have time to swim in the Yalahau cenote.

Try the Lobster Pizza

Lobster Pizza is Holbox’s signature dish and a must-try for seafood lovers visiting the island.

It doesn’t sound spectacular, but it’s such a unique combination of flavors and almost always made with fresh lobster caught that morning, so it can’t be missed.

Make sure you add some local spices and sauces served with the pizza to add even more flavor.

Almost every restaurant claims they were the first to serve lobster pizza or have the best lobster pizza on the island. But Roots Pizza is one of the best restaurants for lobster pizza and a great place to give it a try!

And if you’re not a fan of lobster, don’t worry. There’s plenty of other delicious food around the island, pulling from both local cuisine and international favorites.

Join One of the Whale Shark Tours

Whale shark season in Holbox is between May and September so if you happen to be visiting during this time, it’s an incredible activity to consider.

You can book a Holbox whale sharks tour with knowledgeable travel guides and swim with these majestic creatures.

And despite being one of the largest fishes alive today, whale sharks are actually gentle giants and won’t hurt you.

It’s honestly an unforgettable experience–I swam with whale sharks in Isla Mujeres and it was absolutely incredible!

  • Where to Stay in Holbox

In Holbox, you’ll find a variety of rustic Mexican-style accommodations to fit different budgets and preferences.

Whether you’re looking for the luxury of a high-end resort, the cozy charm of a boutique hotel, or the budget-friendly simplicity of a hostel, you’ll find it here.

However, if your budget allows, I would highly recommend choosing a beachfront hotel. This will give you direct access to the beautiful beach and lounge chairs to enjoy during your stay.

And staying closer to downtown will give you easy access to all the restaurants, bars, and shops on the island.

But even if you choose to stay at one of the more remote hotels, you can easily hire a golf cart taxi to get around.

Here are the best hotels in Holbox for every budget:

  • Luxury : Hotel Villas Flamingos
  • Mid-Range : Villas HM Palapas del Mar
  • Budget : Madre Holbox
Travelista Tip: The hotels on the right side of downtown typically have the best beachfront area in Holbox with less seaweed.

Tips for Visiting Holbox

Are you ready for your unforgettable trip to Isla Holbox? Here are a few more Holbox tips for your next trip to the Island of Holbox:

  • Bring plenty of cash : There are very few ATMs on the island, and they aren’t always guaranteed to work. Some places accept credit cards, but you can’t rely on them during bad weather when internet service can be spotty. Make sure to bring enough Mexican pesos or USD for your visit.
  • Use biodegradable sunscreen : If you plan on swimming in the ocean, it’s important to only wear reef-safe biodegradable sunscreen to protect the fragile marine environment.
  • Be prepared to disconnect: WiFi on Holbox Island in Mexico is incredibly unreliable, and only a few restaurants and bars have WiFi. Be ready to disconnect from the outside world and enjoy every second away from your phone and laptop.
  • Don’t miss the street art: One of the first things you might notice in downtown Holbox is the incredible street art. Make sure to take a second to admire the beautiful art.
  • Check the weather: When it rains in Holbox, the streets can get extremely flooded and muddy and there isn’t much to do. Try to check the weather ahead of time and prepare accordingly.
