Ukrainian forces strike 2 key bridges in Russia's Kursk area

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday the daring military incursion into Russia's Kursk region aims to create a buffer zone to prevent further attacks by Moscow across the border.

It was the first time Zelenskyy clearly stated the aim of the operation, a stunning border incursion that was launched on Aug. 6. His comments came after Ukraine destroyed a key bridge in Russia's Kursk region and struck a second one nearby, disrupting supply lines, officials said Sunday. 

Zelenskyy in his nightly address said that "it is now our primary task in defensive operations overall: to destroy as much Russian war potential as possible and conduct maximum counteroffensive actions. This includes creating a buffer zone on the aggressor's territory -– our operation in the Kursk region."

The bridge attacks, apparently aimed at thwarting a Russian counter-push in Kursk , could mean that Kyiv intends to seek a foothold in the region.

Pro-Kremlin military bloggers acknowledged that the destruction of the first bridge on the Seim River near the town of Glushkovo will impede deliveries of supplies to Russian forces repelling Ukraine's incursion, although Moscow could still use pontoons and smaller bridges. Ukraine's air force chief, Lt. Gen. Mykola Oleshchuk, on Friday, released a video of an airstrike that cut the bridge in two.

Less than two days later, Ukrainian troops hit a second bridge in Russia, according to Oleshchuk and Russian regional Gov. Alexei Smirnov.

As of Sunday morning, there were no officials giving the exact location of the second bridge attack. But Russian Telegram channels claimed that a second bridge over the Seim, in the village of Zvannoe, had been struck.

According to Russia's Mash news site, the attacks left only one intact bridge in the area. The Associated Press could not immediately verify these claims. If confirmed, the Ukrainian strikes would further complicate Moscow's attempts to replenish its forces in Kursk and evacuate civilians.

Glushkovo is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) north of the Ukrainian border, and approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of the main battle zone in Kursk. Zvannoe is located another 8 kilometers (5 miles) to the northwest.

Ukraine could try to hold the ground it has seized

Kyiv has said little about the scope and goals of its push into Russia with tanks and other armored vehicles, the largest attack on the country since World War II, which took the Kremlin by surprise and saw scores of villages and hundreds of prisoners fall into Ukrainian hands.

The Ukrainians drove deep into the Kursk region in several directions, facing little resistance and sowing chaos and panic as tens of thousands of civilians fled the area. Ukraine's Commander in Chief, Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, claimed last week that his forces had advanced across 1,000 square kilometers (390 square miles) of the region, although it was not possible to independently verify what exactly Ukrainian forces effectively control.

Analysts say that although Ukraine could try to consolidate its gains inside Russia, it would be risky, given Kyiv's limited resources, because its own supply lines extending deep into Kursk would be vulnerable.

The incursion has proven Ukraine's ability to seize the initiative and has boosted its morale, which was sapped by a failed counteroffensive last summer and months of grinding Russian gains in the eastern Donbas region.

The move into Kursk resembled Ukraine's lightning operation from September 2022, led by Syrskyi, in which its forces reclaimed control of the northeastern Kharkiv region after taking advantage of Russian manpower shortages and a lack of field fortifications.

Zelenskyy seeks permission to strike deeper into Russia

On Saturday, Zelenskyy urged Kyiv's allies to lift the remaining restrictions on using Western weapons to attack targets deeper in Russia, including in Kursk, saying his troops could deprive Moscow "of any ability to advance and cause destruction" if granted sufficient long-range capabilities.

"It is crucial that our partners remove barriers that hinder us from weakening Russian positions in the way this war demands. … The bravery of our soldiers and the resilience of our combat brigades compensate for the lack of essential decisions from our partners," Zelenskyy said in a post on the social platform X.

Russia's Foreign Ministry and pro-Kremlin bloggers have alleged that U.S.-made HIMARS launchers have been used to destroy bridges on the Seim. These claims could not be independently verified.

Ukraine's leaders have repeatedly sought authorization for long-range strikes on Russian air bases and other infrastructure used to pummel Ukraine's energy facilities and other civilian targets, including with retrofitted Soviet-era "glide bombs" that have laid waste to Ukraine's industrial east in recent months.

Moscow also appears to have increased attacks on Kyiv , targeting it Sunday with ballistic missiles for a third time this month, according to the head of the municipal military administration. Serhii Popko said in a Telegram post that the "almost identical" August strikes on the capital "most likely used" KN-23 missiles supplied by North Korea.

Another attempt to target Kyiv followed at about 7 a.m., Popko said, this time with Iskander cruise missiles. Ukrainian air defenses struck down all the missiles fired in both attacks on the city, he said.

Fears mount for Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

In a separate development, the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency said Saturday that the safety situation at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is deteriorating following reports of a nearby drone strike.

Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, urged "maximum restraint from all sides" after an IAEA team stationed in the plant reported that an explosive carried by a drone detonated just outside its protected area.

According to Grossi's statement, the impact was "close to the essential water sprinkle ponds" and about 100 meters (100 yards) from the only power line supplying the plant. The IAEA team at the plant has reported intense military activity in the surrounding area in the past week, it said.

Kyiv and Moscow have traded blame for attacks in the vicinity of the power plant since it was captured by Russian forces early in the 2022 invasion, including a fire at the facility last weekend. Grossi's statement said the blaze had caused "considerable damage," but posed no immediate danger to nuclear safety.

Ukraine has repeatedly alleged that Russia plans to stage an attack and blame Ukrainian forces. Last summer, Zelenskyy warned of possible explosives he said Moscow may have planted on the plant's roof to blackmail Ukraine.

A worker was killed in a fire that ripped through Russia's Omsk oil refinery, management has said.

Another six workers were injured, the refinery added. 

Earlier today, the local governor said seven people were in hospital, with one in a serious condition.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear. Several Russian oil refineries have been targeted by Ukrainian drone attacks. 

Some reports on social media said a huge explosion was heard across several districts of the west Siberia city, located around 1,700 miles east of Moscow.

The Omsk refinery processes more than 21 million metric tons, accounting for 8% of Russia's total oil refining volume.

The plant, controlled by Gazprom Neft, said the fire would not affect its production plan.

"Fierce battles are raging" around the eastern city of Pokrovsk, according to the general staff of the Ukrainian armed forces.

Russian forces have made 38 attempts to storm Ukrainian positions near the strategic logistics hub today, with clashes ongoing in 14 locations, it said.

"There remains a tense situation in the Pokrovsky direction," the general staff said, referring to the name for the district.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine has decided to "further strengthen" Pokrovsk after being briefed by his army chief on the situation in the area. 

Russian forces have been inching forward for months in the Donetsk region, where Pokrovsk is located.

The advance quickened in recent weeks as Moscow's troops  mounted relentless attacks in the direction of Pokrovsk.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has identified areas of the frontline from which the Russian military is likely redeploying forces to Kursk.

Moscow is drawing troops from northern Kharkiv, Chasiv Yar and western Zaporizhzhia - the latter of which readers may remember was a focal point of Ukraine's counteroffensive last year.

Russian command is resisting pressure to redeploy forces away from its "high priority offensive" on Pokrovsk in Donetsk, said the ISW.

It will "likely continue to draw forces from lower priority offensive operations elsewhere throughout the theatre to defend in Kursk", the ISW said.

The Russian defence ministry says it struck Ukrainian forces with airstrikes at more than a dozen places along the front in the Kursk region today.

Moscow said it also repelled attacks in seven areas of Kursk.

The ministry said it was hunting for Ukrainian sabotage units which had hidden in the forests in an attempt to penetrate deeper into Russian territory.

Russia's attack on Ukraine today was its largest air bombardment, Reuters reports Ukraine's air force commander as saying.

The air force shot down 102 of 127 Russian missiles and 99 of 109 drones, Mykola Oleshchuk said.

Russia has bombarded Ukraine for more than two and half years, and launched attacks on 15 regions this morning.

Mr Oleshchuk said the attack included:

• 109 Shahed drones launched from Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Kursk, Yeisk, Chauda and Crimea
• 77 Kh-101 cruise missiles from fighter jets over Volgograd and the Caspian Sea
• 28 Kalibr cruise missiles from surface/underwater carriers in the Black Sea
• 10 Kh-59/Kh-69 guided air missiles from fighter jets over Belgorod and Mariupol
• Six Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles from Kursk, Voronezh and Crimea
• Three Kinzhal ballistic missiles fired from the Ryazan and Lipetsk regions
• 3 Kh-22 cruise missiles from the Voronezh region

Poland has released more information on a military object that entered its airspace during Russia's bombardment of Ukraine.

Jacek Goryszewski, spokesperson for the Polish army's operational command, said it was likely a drone and that it may have landed on Polish territory.

Searches were underway, he said, ruling out that the object was a missile.

 "The object is being searched for by 100 soldiers on the ground and one helicopter," he said.

Mr Goryszewski said it was impossible to say whether the object was Russian or Ukrainian as weather conditions had not allowed for visual identification.

The object entered Polish airspace at 4.43am GMT and radars lost sight of it at 5.16am.

"Due to the prevailing weather conditions, it was not possible to clearly identify it, which prevented the decision to shoot it down," operational command posted on X.

The head of the international nuclear watchdog will front a mission to inspect a power plant in Russia on Tuesday.

Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said today he will head to the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant.

This is due to the "serious situation" in the region.

He said: "Given the serious situation, I'm personally leading tomorrow's IAEA mission to the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant in Russia.

"I reiterate that the safety and security of nuclear facilities must, under no circumstances, be endangered."

Ukraine's audacious military incursion into Russia's Kursk region - the first such action by a military power since 1941 - appears to have caught Vladimir Putin by surprise.

Although it is unclear what Ukraine is ultimately seeking to achieve, it has stated it does not intend to "hold" ground, so its current occupation is temporary.  

But what next? If Ukraine had planned to push further into Russia it would probably not have blown three key bridges across the Siem river which would have been vital to its further plans.

What's the goal?

Instead, it looks likely Ukraine was seeking to seize the initiative, to demonstrate Russia is not in control of the war, and to force Moscow to respond to the attack by transferring forces from the frontline in the Donbas, thus relieving pressure on embattled Ukrainian forces. 

Destroying the bridges would make it more difficult for Russia to counterattack and expel Ukrainian forces.

Although Ukraine could push further into Russia, it would create an increasing logistics challenge to keep those forces resupplied, and also divert scarce resources from the front line.

Militarily the incursion into Kursk might appear risky, but it is probably designed to apply political pressure on Mr Putin, albeit we have yet to see whether the military or political objective prevails.

A Ukraine foreign ministry official has claimed a Russian attack on Monday targeted a hydropower plant in the Kyiv region.

"Today's Russian attack ... targeted Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, including Kyiv HPP," Andriy Sybiha said on X. 

Meanwhile, the Russian defence ministry claimed gas compression stations were hit in three regions of Ukraine.

It also alleges to have hit power substations and Western-supplied weapons airfields in a heavy round of bombardment on Monday morning.

Telegram says its chief executive Pavel Durov has "nothing to hide" after he was arrested in France, adding the charges against him are "absurd".

The billionaire founder of the encrypted messaging app was detained after his private jet landed at Le Bourget airport on the outskirts of Paris on Saturday.

News broadcasters BFMTV and TF1 have quoted unnamed sources as saying the Russian-born entrepreneur - who became a French citizen in 2021 - was the subject of a search warrant.

Both outlets suggest the investigation was focused on a lack of moderators on Telegram and potential criminal activity by users.

They said the warrant alleges his platform has been used for money laundering, drug trafficking and other offences, though French authorities are yet to comment.

A British security advisor to a team of journalists covering the war in Ukraine has died in a suspected Russian missile strike.

Ryan Evans was killed and two Reuters news agency journalists injured in the strike on Hotel Sapphire in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk on Saturday night.

The 38-year-old was a former British soldier who had worked for Reuters since 2022.

In a tribute, the agency said: “Ryan has helped so many of our journalists cover events around the world; we will miss him terribly.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the hotel was destroyed in a Russian missile strike, calling the act “deliberate”.

In a post on X, he said: “Today in Kramatorsk, the entire day was spent clearing the rubble after a Russian missile strike. Among the injured were journalists - a Reuters film crew, citizens of Ukraine, America, and Britain. A regular city hotel was destroyed by a Russian “Iskander” missile.

“Deliberately. Calculated. Seven people were injured, and one person lost their life. My deepest condolences to the families and loved ones.”

Russia’s defence ministry has said it sent more artillery to the Kursk region where Russian forces are fighting thousands of Ukrainian troops who pierced the Russian border on 6 August.

“Additional missile and artillery weapons have been supplied to the group,” the ministry said in a statement on supplies to troops in the Russian border regions.

Ukrainian Defense Forces have received a new type of attack weapon named Palianytsia, described as a hybrid of a missile and an unmanned aerial vehicle.

Former US President Donald Trump has signalled his support for Ukraine in a conversation with Volodymyr Zelenskiy and said he wants to stop the war with Russia, the Ukrainian president told reporters in an interview posted on his social media.

Republican presidential candidate Trump is locked in a tight-run race with Vice President Kamala Harris in the 5 Nov US election and has threatened US withdrawal from NATO and said he would not defend allies that did not increase their defence budgets.

Ryan Evans, a member of the Reuters team covering the war in Ukraine, was killed and two Reuters journalists were injured in a strike on a hotel in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, the news agency said on Sunday.

Evans, who was working as a safety adviser for the agency, was killed after a missile struck the Hotel Sapphire where he was staying as part of a six-person team on Saturday, Reuters said in a statement.

Two of the agency’s journalists were being treated in hospital; one of them was seriously injured, it said.

“We are urgently seeking more information about the attack, including by working with the authorities in Kramatorsk, and we are supporting our colleagues and their families,” Reuters said.

Evans, a former British soldier, had been working with Reuters since 2022 and advised its journalists on safety around the world including in Ukraine, Israel and at the Paris Olympics. He was 38.

“We send our deepest condolences and thoughts to Ryan’s family and loved ones. Ryan has helped so many of our journalists cover events around the world; we will miss him terribly,” Reuters said.

The three other members of the Reuters team who were in the hotel at the time of the strike were accounted for and safe, the agency said.

President Zelensky expressed condolences to the families and friends of the victims of a Russian missile strike on a hotel housing a Reuters film crew.

Russia seized more than $100 million from Google for propaganda, according to reports

Russia has seized more than $100m (£76m) from Google to fund propaganda supporting Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, court documents show.

US court fillings, seen by The Telegraph , show bailiffs took the funds from the tech giant’s Russian bank accounts in 2022, tipping its unit in the country into bankruptcy. 

According to the documents, bankruptcy managers handed the funds to Russian TV channels including the state-owned RT and Tsargrad.

Google’s Russian entity declared bankruptcy in 2022, saying the Kremlin had seized funds.

‘Terrible’ strike by Russia on civilian, US ambassador to Ukraine says

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said negotiations were ongoing with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Switzerland regarding the second summit on peace in a conversation with Indian journalists.

Zelensky also said that he told India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi he would support India hosting the second summit on peace but added that Ukraine cannot organise it in a country which did not sign the communique from the previous summit.

The Ukrainian president added that he discussed all of the points from the communique and previous peace summit during the meeting with Modi on Friday.

Brit feared dead in missile attack

In Kramatorsk, Reuters journalists have been pulled from under the rubble of a hotel destroyed by a missile strike.

The Kramatorsk City Council citing Oleksandr Honcharenko, the head of Kramatorsk City Military Administration reported Russian troops struck a hotel in Kramatorsk presumably with an Iskander-M missile, where Reuters journalists were staying.

Among the injured journalists were citizens of Ukraine, the United States, Latvia and Germany.

According to the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office, other foreign media journalists aged 38, 40, 41 and 46 sustained mine and blast injuries, brain injury, a broken leg, concussions, cut wounds and bruises.

Two 32 and 34-year-old women who were in their homes at the time of the attack, were also injured.

Zelensky launches Ukraine’s new Palianytsia missile-drone

A member of the Reuters team covering the war in Ukraine was missing and two others were hospitalised after a strike on a hotel in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk.

In a statement, the news agency said that the Hotel Sapphire, where a six-person Reuters crew was staying, was hit “by an apparent missile strike” on Saturday.

“One of our colleagues is unaccounted for, while another two have been taken to hospital for treatment,” the agency said.

“Three other colleagues have been accounted for. We are urgently seeking more information, working with the authorities in Kramatorsk, and supporting our colleagues and their families. We will give an update when we have more information,” it added.

Vadym Filashkin, governor of Donetsk region, said in a post on Telegram on Sunday morning that “the Russians hit Kramatorsk”, and that two journalists were injured, while one was missing after a strike on a hotel.

“Authorities, police and rescuers are working on the spot. Debris clearance and rescue operations are ongoing,” he said.

The Russian Defence Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ukraine‘s General Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Telegram that it had opened a “pre-trial investigation” into the strike, which it said happened at 10:35 p.m. local time (1935 GMT) on Saturday.

“Russian troops struck the city of Kramatorsk, probably with an Iskander-M missile,” it said.

Russia and  Ukraine  have each exchanged more than 100 prisoners of war as Kyiv marked  its third Independence Day  since Moscow’s full-scale invasion.

Ukraine said the 115 Ukrainian servicemen who were freed were conscripts, many of whom were taken prisoner in the first months of Russia’s invasion.

Among them were nearly 50 soldiers  captured by Russian forces  from the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol.

Five civilians die in Ukraine's shelling of Russia's Belgorod region, governor says

Five civilians died and 12 others were injured after Ukraine shelled the town of Rakitnoye in Russia’s Belgorod region, the governor of the region in the country’s southwest said on Sunday.

Among the injured are three children, Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of the Belgorod region that borders Ukraine, said on the Telegram messaging app.

Nine of the injured were hospitalised, with six of them listed in a serious condition, including a 16-year-old girl who is in intensive care

“We will definitely help everyone who suffered,” Gladkov said on the Telegram messaging app. “Our task now is to endure, to overcome trials, to cope with trouble.”

There was no immediate comment from Ukraine.

Both Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians in the war, which Russia launched with a full-scale invasion on its smaller neighbour in February 2022.

Russia attacks Ukraine with missiles, drones, Ukraine military says

Russia launched several missiles and drones overnight targeting northern and eastern Ukraine, Kyiv’s military has said, with air defence systems destroying most of the weapons before they reached their targets.

The attack targeted Ukraine‘s frontline regions of Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Donetsk, Ukraine‘s air force said on the Telegram messaging app.

“Most of the missiles did not reach their targets,” the air force said, adding that Russia launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile, an Iskander-K cruise missile and six guided air missiles. It did not specify how many missiles were destroyed.

The air force said Russia launched nine attack drones, with Ukraine‘s air defence systems destroying eight of them over the Ukraine‘s Mykolaiv region.

Oleh Sinehubov, governor of the Kharkiv region in the east, posted on Telegram that seven people were injured in the Russian attacks, including a 4-year-old child.

Ihor Terekhov, mayor of Kharkiv city, said a gas pipeline was damaged in the city and at least two houses were destroyed and 10 damaged.

There was no immediate comment from Russia.

Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched with a full-scale invasion on Ukraine in February 2022.
