Top River Cruises

Not one for the high seas? Explore the world along its rivers instead.

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't interested in the hustle and bustle of a massive ocean liner, consider a river cruise. River cruises offer the chance to visit lesser-known ports around the world, thanks to the small size and maneuverability of the vessels. These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

Read on to discover the best river cruise lines around the world, with details about where they sail, the number of passengers you can expect onboard, a snapshot of amenities and experiences, and sentiment from recent travelers.

CroisiEurope Cruises

Viking Longship Idun on the Main River in front of Johannisburg Palace, Aschaffenburg, Germany.

Number of passengers: 75 to 250 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, U.S.

Viking's 60-plus ships – known as longships – traverse major rivers across Europe, including the Danube , the Rhine, the Douro and more. Other popular routes sail Egypt's Nile River as well as the Mississippi River , and newer options include a series of Great Lakes itineraries.

What to expect: Travelers may be familiar with Viking Ocean Cruises , which operates larger ocean voyages with an emphasis on opulent accommodations and diverse enrichment activities. Viking's river cruises follow a similar road map, with meals, daily walking tours and Wi-Fi access (where applicable) included in the base fare. Other amenities and activities span guest lectures, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, libraries, outdoor decks and more. Select Viking riverboats are also equipped with swimming pools, while cabins feature minibars, premium toiletries, purified water and TVs.

On board, you can expect to find mostly English-speaking passengers. Viking's price point generally attracts older crowds in the 55-plus age group, and travelers must be at least 18 years old to cruise on the line.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers thoroughly enjoyed their experience with Viking, praising the scenic shore excursions, top-notch service and comfortable rooms. Some, however, expressed disappointment with the service as well as the food.

What to expect: Its 17 ships aim to create the feel of a boutique hotel with stylish decor, antique artwork and specialty restaurants. The ships hold an average capacity of 120 cruisers, and the company boasts one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios in the industry: about one crew member for every two travelers.

Stateroom amenities vary by vessel but may include marble bathrooms, Egyptian cotton linens, French balconies, iPod docking stations, Nespresso coffee machines, rainfall showers and more. The line's all-inclusive rates cover meals, alcoholic beverages, select excursions, gratuities, onboard fitness classes and Wi-Fi access, on top of entertainment and enrichment classes. Uniworld prides itself on its top-notch cuisine, which is made with local ingredients sourced from the ports on your itinerary and also includes vegetarian and vegan options.

Uniworld's typical clientele tend to be in their 50s or 60s and reside in North America, the U.K. and Australia . The river cruise line has select itineraries aimed at families, LGBTQ cruisers and solo travelers.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers offered abundant praise for Uniworld's voyages, complimenting the stylish accommodations, attentive staff and fascinating excursions. Though complaints were few and far between, a handful of past travelers felt the experience was not worth the high price point.

Number of passengers: 90 to 180 Sails to:  U.S.

As the name suggests, American Cruise Lines sails exclusively on the rivers and coastlines of the United States. Popular cruises visit destinations along the Mississippi River, on the Hudson River, throughout New England , and lining the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line also tours Alaska , the Southeast coast including Florida , and the Puget Sound between Washington state and the Canadian border.

What to expect: American Cruise Lines operates 19 relatively new small ships and river vessels (the average ship is about 5 years old), ranging from modern riverboats to small coastal ships to authentic paddlewheelers. Comfortable cabins can accommodate up to three people per room, and all ships offer single staterooms designed exclusively for solo travelers . Each room boasts picture windows, a spacious bathroom and – in some cases – a private balcony. In the ships' public spaces, cruisers can enjoy daily onboard entertainment like jazz and blues performances, as well as presentations by historians and area experts.

The line promises an all-American experience. As such, you can expect to find American staff aboard the American-built ships as well as food that pays homage to the destinations you will visit, from New Orleans -style andouille sausage gumbo to New England-inspired seafood boils. Complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres are served every night prior to dinner; all meals, snacks, and wine and beer are included in the base fare. Shore excursions are not typically included in the rate.

Passengers on American Cruise Lines tend to lean North American and are typically mature retired travelers.

A family-owned business founded in 2002, AmaWaterways operates 29 river cruise boats that welcome 150 passengers on average.

The cruise line aims to provide excursion-rich experiences and offers unique themed sailings for passengers with certain interests. Wine-themed voyages are perfect for oenophiles wishing to explore some of Europe's most popular wine regions, while a concierge golf program will transport passengers from one famous golf course to the next. Or, opt for a holiday river cruise to visit magical Christmas markets around Europe. In 2024, AmaWaterways will offer three new Black history-themed itineraries.

What to expect: On board, guests can expect cabins suitable for couples or single travelers, as well as a set amount of connectible rooms designed for multigenerational families. Staterooms are spacious, with perks like bathrobes, slippers and plush bedding. Cabins can feature up to two balconies with AmaWaterways' twin balcony design, which allows for a full, step-out balcony alongside a French balcony with sliding glass doors. In-room Wi-Fi is complimentary, and guests will have access to movies and music on demand.

Outside of their cabins, passengers can enjoy amenities spanning small pools, sun decks, fitness equipment, a hair salon, massage services and more.

Passengers from the U.K. and Australia sail on this river cruise line as well. You can expect to find a mix of couples, families and solo cruisers – including a growing number of millennial travelers – on your vessel, thanks to AmaWaterways' diverse cabin offerings. Adventures by Disney charters AmaWaterways ships for select sailings each year as well.

What travelers say: Recent travelers say AmaWaterways exceeded their expectations, with many noting it was especially enjoyable for families. Still, some were disappointed, particularly with the food.

Number of passengers: 16 to 166 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Avalon Waterways sails 19 riverboats along popular thoroughfares like the Danube, the Rhone, the Seine, the Nile, the Rhine, the Moselle, the Mekong, the Ganges and more. In 2024, it will also sail the Douro River in Portugal.

What to expect: Launched in 2004, Avalon stands out for its spacious vessels – known as Suite Ships – which feature some of the largest rooms in the river cruise industry and beds that face wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows, providing panoramic views. Additional stateroom perks include complimentary breakfast in bed, L'Occitane toiletries, sitting areas, ample storage space and mattress toppers.

Across the ship, passengers can enjoy amenities like a sun deck with lounge chairs, whirlpools and a game area, in addition to numerous restaurants and bars and a 24-hour self-serve coffee station. You will also have your pick of Classic, Active or Discovery shore excursions – ranging from standard tours with a local guide to hiking outings along a hilltop castle – depending on your interests and physical abilities.

Avalon Waterways attracts English-speaking cruisers from a variety of countries, typically in their 50s and 60s. However, children ages 8 and older are welcome on board (though there are no designated kids clubs), and some voyages draw younger or older passengers.

What travelers say: Most recent reviews are positive, with travelers highlighting the friendly, knowledgeable staff and tasty food.

Number of passengers: 84 to 130 Sails to:  Europe

Travel company Tauck wears multiple hats: It operates small-ship voyages around the world, land tours across seven continents, small group journeys for an average of 24 travelers at a time, family tours and – finally – European river cruises. Six new river itineraries in Europe are on the docket for 2024. Take your pick from nine river vessels to explore popular waterways like the Douro, the Moselle, the Rhine, the Danube and the Rhone.

What to expect: All-inclusive fares cover shore excursions, onboard activities and entertainment, gratuities, beverages and more. Plus, Tauck offers exclusive access to unforgettable experiences like wine tastings at private vineyards and gala dinners in historic castles.

More than 80% of the staterooms feature French balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing for excellent views. Other in-room amenities may include adjustable climate controls, satin linens, pillow-top mattresses, terry cloth robes and more. Outside of your cabin, you'll find perks such as a sun deck, a putting green, enrichment programs like cooking demonstrations, a fitness center and complimentary bikes for onshore exploring.

Tauck caters to affluent, English-speaking cruisers – primarily Americans in the 55-and-older age group – though you may also find families with adult children on board. The line appeals most to travelers who prefer all the details of their trip to be taken care of for them, versus those who like to plan activities independent of the cruise line.

What travelers say: Recent passengers generally speak highly of their Tauck river cruise experiences, pointing to the exceptional level of organization and spacious, luxurious accommodations. Others said they were underwhelmed for the price.

Aerial of Emerald Cruises river cruise ship on river in Urbar, Germany.

Number of passengers: 84 to 180 Sails to:  Europe, Asia

Previously known as Emerald Waterways, Emerald Cruises transports travelers across some of the most popular rivers in Europe and Asia, including the Danube, the Rhine, the Douro and the Mekong.

What to expect: The cruise fare covers all meals, beverages with lunch and dinner, daily shore excursions − which include more physically rigorous options called EmeraldACTIVE – Wi-Fi access and gratuities.

Emerald operates nine river vessels, all of which boast luxurious public spaces and accommodations with en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. Common-area amenities span heated indoor pools, sun decks, spa and wellness facilities, and a variety of eateries. Onboard fitness classes are available, as are other forms of entertainment. On shore, cruisers can borrow bicycles to explore historic city centers.

Typical clientele aboard Emerald Cruises' voyages includes American and British passengers around retirement age, though some younger travelers may make an appearance as well. Children 12 and older are permitted on board and on tours, but there are no kids clubs or designated activities for younger cruisers. Special rooms and dinner reservations are available for solo travelers.

What travelers say: Cruisers on recent sailings – especially first-time sailors – enjoyed their experiences on Emerald Cruises. High points included the attentive crew members and the stress-free booking and planning process. However, some felt that customer service and communication were subpar.

Number of passengers: 68 to 163 Sails to: Europe, Asia

From the Danube to the Mekong, Australian travel company Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours offers lavish, all-inclusive river sailings with an emphasis on customization. The more upscale sister brand of Emerald Cruises, Scenic affords travelers the opportunity to do as much or as little as they want while on board and ashore.

What to expect: Enrichment activities are hand-picked by the line's "Journey Designers," and vessels provide a top-notch level of service thanks to their high crew-to-passenger ratios. In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 160 to 510 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers were pleased with their experiences aboard Scenic's vessels, praising the spacious cabins, pampering butler service, and knowledgeable crew members and tour guides. However, some travelers were particularly disappointed with the food.

Helwin Goetzinger | Courtesy of CroisiEurope

Number of passengers: 22 to 200 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size: River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate, with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere: The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment: River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions: Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine: Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price: River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.
  • American Queen

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered the most luxurious:

6 best river cruises in Europe for families in 2024

O nce upon a time, river cruising was mostly considered an “adults only” experience. That story is being rewritten, though, as river cruise lines continue to expand on their family itineraries, add kids-sail-free discounts, and up the ‘cool’ factor on ships. On European river cruises for families these days, expect to find kids’ clubs, swimming pools, family cabins, and shore excursions that are equal parts fun and educational, plus plenty more perks.

If excursions like an apple streusel-baking workshop, art museum scavenger hunt, and a day spent on a local farm are your vibe, then consider one of these six river cruise lines for your next adventure. Did I mention you only have to unpack once?

How we chose these European river cruise companies:  Read our methodology for selecting family cruises .

1. Tauck Bridges

  • Minimum age for Europe river cruises:  4 years old (although the line recommends 8)

Since pioneering family river cruises in 2010, Tauck Bridges has grown to offer arguably the most robust and thoughtfully designed, kid-friendly trips across Europe’s waterways.

Each itinerary begins as a blank canvas—and every shore excursion, onboard activity, menu, and other detail is curated specifically for youngsters and their parents or caregivers. Shore excursions include exclusive access passes and pre-opening visits, and are further embellished with on-land activities intended to make history and culture fun for all kids (think a scavenger hunt in the Louvre, medieval games at a Slovakian castle, and a baking workshop in Germany). Bicycles are also available for use.

CRUISE DEALS: Kids sail free on these 7 cruise lines

Back on the ship, you can engage in games and activities inspired by the destinations along your itinerary. Exercise those vocal cords at “The Sound of Music” karaoke, for example, before you visit locations from the movie along the Danube River. Or celebrate “Carnival Night” the German way on a Rhine River itinerary.

When it comes to resting up for the next day’s adventures, the ships’ 300-square-foot suites are a sought-after option as they can comfortably sleep a family of four. These accommodations—and the cruises themselves—come at a pretty penny. However, they deliver an excellent value for the money, and families can still save with discounts like $500 off for children 12 and under. The line also waives single supplement fees on Category 1 cabins (psst: you should totally invite one of your parents or in-laws on the cruise to help out with the kids).

All ships come with a putting green and either a plunge pool or hot tub, except for the line’s Douro River-based ship. That one flaunts a large, infinity-style pool and more deck space with Balinese day beds that allow you to take full advantage of Portugal’s Mediterranean climate.

2. Adventures by Disney

  • Age minimum for Europe river cruises:  5 years old

You won’t find any theme park rides or character appearances on Adventures by Disney’s river cruises . Families instead enjoy an adventurous vacation, underpinned by the peace of mind that comes from the brand’s reputation for high-quality service and programming.

Adventures by Disney, one of the company’s travel arms, collaborates with AmaWaterways for its river cruise itineraries. The chartered ships are then sprinkled with Disney magic, thanks to Adventure Guides (rocking Mickey ears) who provide hands-on concierge service as well as design and lead activities onboard and on land.

FROM OUR SISTER SITE TOURSCOOP: Everything you need to know about Adventures by Disney

Onboard activities on ABD’s family friendly river cruises are tailored to the guests on a given cruise and offer something for every member of the family, with everything from movie nights, trivia and other games to crafts inspired by destinations along the itinerary. All shore excursions cater to families, too, even those that might sound more alluring to parents. When I traveled with Adventures by Disney in Spain, for example, a flamenco performance treated parents to a sangria tasting and kiddos to cute mocktails prepared just for them, while everyone was encouraged to get up and dance.

Other special family perks range from immersive storytelling to occasional Mickey-shaped foods that complement daily menus of fine dining and kid-friendly cuisine. A Junior Adventurer Dinner onboard is one of a handful of activities that take place on select nights and treat kids. (Note: This activity is not a childcare service, but it does give you a chance to sneak away for a little date night on the ship.) The ships also have pools on the top deck, for an extra dose of fun on warm, sunny days.

3. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

  • Minimum age on Europe river cruises:  4 years old

Step foot onto a Uniworld Boutique River Cruises ship, and you might feel like you’ve entered a luxurious doll house. The cruise line undoubtedly boasts the prettiest ships, but it’s the fun-filled activities and exclusive excursions on Generations Collection itineraries that will get the biggest reaction from your discerning, little travel companions.

Imaginative play comes easy with excursions like the “Schloss Schonbrunn Experience” Children’s Museum in Vienna, on the line’s Authentic Danube itinerary. Here, kids can learn more about the everyday life of the imperial family while dressing up as a prince or princess, playing with imperial toys, and more. Adventure seekers on Uniworld’s Castles Along the Rhine itinerary, meanwhile, can climb trees and platforms at Speyer’s Climbing Forest, choosing among 24 different outdoor courses.

While the options on land are bountiful, Uniworld excels when it comes to keeping kids entertained onboard. A Young Travelers’ Lounge and game room with PlayStation, games, movies, and local treats for snacking mean little ones never get bored onboard while the ship makes its way from one port to another.

SET SAIL: 12 best family cruises and ships in the world

Two dedicated family hosts onboard offer family friendly movie nights and other kid-approved activities, as well as special menus for every meal to satisfy young palates. A supervised kids’ table is a fun change of pace (and an excuse for you to snag a romantic dinner with your other half). More culturally immersive activities are also available onboard—like dessert making with the onboard pastry chef, crafts, local language classes, and a ship tour.

Generations Collection sailings aren’t offered year-round, but they are scheduled over school breaks and available on select Rhine and Danube River itineraries. S.S. Victoria and S.S. Antoinette are the only ships with a pool onboard that offer these itineraries.

4. CroisiEurope

  • Minimum age for Europe river cruises:  None

Nobody puts baby in a corner on a CroisiEurope sailing. That’s because all ages are welcome on this French river cruise line, which offers a “kids sail free” program that makes exploring Europe’s waterways accessible to a diverse range of families. Just take it from the company’s General Manager of North America, Michael Da Costa:

“Being a family-owned company, CroisiEurope has created a river cruise experience with something for every age. Our Family Club program also allows kids to sail free on select itineraries, further expanding the options for those traveling as a family or multi-generational group.”

Kids 16 and under sail for free in Southern Spain, Italy, and Portugal through the Family Club program. (CroisiEurope is the only river cruise line that offers dedicated family cruises on Italy’s Po River.) Regardless of the destination, passengers ages 10 and under always enjoy 20 percent off, while little ones two and under cruise for free.

BEST TRIP EVER: 50 best family vacation ideas for all ages

In addition to price incentives, CroisiEurope takes the cake (gateau) when it comes to accommodations. A number of ships offer triple- and quadruple-occupancy cabins. Bigger families and multigenerational groups can easily book adjacent cabins for convenient proximity. Babies and toddlers are pampered with comfy digs, too, courtesy of pack-and-plays available upon request.

Many of the ships that offer Family Club river cruises have swimming pools on their top decks. (Note: The first language onboard is French; however, crewmembers also speak English, and announcements are translated in all languages spoken by the passengers on a given sailing.)

5. Avalon Waterways

  • Minimum age for Europe river cruises:  8 years old (although the line recommends teens)

Kids as young as 8 are welcome onboard Avalon Waterways ’ ships. But to fully experience what the line does best—hands-on, culturally enriching activities and rugged adventures—families should zero in on its Active and Discovery cruises . These itineraries take absorbing the history and culture of a place one step further by allowing you to be a part of it.

Learn how to cook a dish passed down through generations—and if you’re like me, you’ll continue to apply the locals’ “secret” preparation methods in your own kitchen for years to come. (Heck, I’ve saved so much time peeling garlic cloves since learning a hack during a past Avalon Waterways’ cruise.) Take a painting class in the South of France, where famous artists flocked for inspiration, or enjoy a fresh catch at a family-owned oyster farm in The Netherlands.

Craving more of the outdoors? Active and Discovery cruise itineraries also offer a handful of outdoor adventures that run the gamut from hiking and biking to kayaking and canoeing through picture-perfect scenery. While some river cruise lines include only a select few excursions in the fare, Avalon Waterways provides more “bang for your buck” with an average of 22 tours covered in each itinerary. This added value is particularly attractive for multigenerational groups who want to stick together for most of their activities.

Families also will appreciate Avalon Waterways’ roomy standard cabins with beds facing a wall of windows and open-air balconies, so you never miss a view. Suites with even more space are ideal for larger groups. On the top deck, families can enjoy a hot tub, putting green, and games such as cornhole.

6. A-Rosa

If your kiddos are 15 and under, A-Rosa will let them hitch a free cruise (or, at the very least, take 30 percent off their fare) depending on which deck your cabin is located. But there’s much more to this German cruise line designed for families of all ages.

Spacious family cabins; family tables at mealtime; special menus for picky little eaters; a youth club and childcare on select cruises (an amenity you won’t find on other river cruise ships); and a lively top deck with a swimming pool and putting green and other games round out the other perquisites.

A-Rosa also gets major kudos for debuting the first-ever, family river cruise ship in Europe. A-Rosa Sena , which focuses on Rhine River itineraries, takes it up a notch with more family cabins and larger cabins altogether, a dedicated kids’ club room, and a separate children’s pool in addition to the main pool. Activities for youngsters vary by ship, space, how many are onboard, and other factors. Examples include designing your own t-shirt, a treasure hunt on the ship, face painting, and theme days.

Don’t worry: All the fun onboard is balanced out by even more to do off the ship. Dedicated family excursions include trips to places kids want to go, such as Comics Station Antwerp, an indoor theme park inspired by Belgian comic heroes. Family port guides are also on the ship to ensure families make the most of their time on shore. (Note: English is one of the main languages used onboard.)

Why a European river cruise with kids?

European river cruises allow you and your family to experience a destination authentically and mindfully. They also make it easy to explore big cities and smaller, fairytale villages throughout countries like France, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Belgium, The Netherlands, Slovakia, and Italy. Lower passenger capacities onboard mean more time to connect, and get to know other passengers and crew members.

The Top 10 River Cruise Lines in 2021

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

The past year put the entire travel industry through the wringer, perhaps no segment more so than cruising. Though the pandemic forced ships around the world to remain in port, readers nevertheless looked back fondly on their times at sea while ranking the world's top 10 river cruise lines for Travel + Leisure's World's Best Awards.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in five categories, including river cruising.

Though many European countries have been off-limits for travelers, memories of recent trips to one of the world's iconic river cruising destinations helped inform voters' choices this year. Tauck moved up two places in T+L's 2021 rankings to grab the No. 2 spot with an eye-popping score above 96. The iconic river ships of No. 3 Viking Cruises also fared well this year, with readers giving the stalwart high marks, moving it up three places. Viking has river ships across Europe, of course, but also sails the Mekong and the Nile. In 2022, the company plans to launch trips on the Mississippi.

Other high-ranking lines won praise for their journeys outside the traditional rivers of Europe. No. 4 Aqua Expeditions, for example, sails to such destinations as Indonesia, Peru, and Vietnam. (The company's newest ship, the Aqua Nera, debuted this summer on the Amazon.) And No. 5 American Queen Steamboat Company, which didn't make T+L's top 10 last year, keeps its focus strictly domestic, with trips on the Columbia, the Mississippi, the Ohio, and other U.S. waterways.

But this year's highest-ranked line goes just about everywhere. No. 1 Uniworld Boutique River Cruises earned one of the highest scores of any cruise line — river or ocean — this year, impressing readers with flawless service, imaginative itineraries, top-flight design, and wonderful food. "We were treated like royalty," gushed one traveler who sailed on the Maria Theresa. "Our experience was an 11 out of 10." Can't do much better than that.

Find the rest of the list — and what other qualities set Uniworld apart — below.

1. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

This global operator of 19 ships sails rivers across Europe, plus waterways in Cambodia, Egypt, India, Peru, and Vietnam. Among the newest in the fleet are the Bon Voyage, based in France, and the La Venezia, recently relaunched in Italy. And while readers certainly raved about the line's ships, they saved their highest praise for the ask-and-you-shall-receive mentality of the Uniworld crews. "My experience exceeded all expectations," said one traveler, who toured Europe on the Antoinette . "Staff consistently went above and beyond to ensure a pampered vacation. When one of our party asked if there was a guitar on board so we could sing in the parlor one evening, a staffer said he would arrange it — and proceeded to purchase a guitar at our stop the next day!" Other respondents made note of Uniworld's overall attention to detail, with excursions, meals, entertainment, and logistics expertly handled in just the right way. "It was among our most favorite vacations ever — everything was perfect," said one voter, who traveled on the Beatrice . "The best experience I have ever had on any ship," said another. A third reader summed it up like this: "This was my first experience with Uniworld, and I cried when I had to leave. Everything wowed me."

Best European cruises: 6 ships that stand out across the pond

Ashley Kosciolek

Editor's Note

Prospective cruisers often ask me what the best European cruises are, but that question is difficult to answer because Europe is massive. It encompasses some 45 countries and includes such cruise regions as the Mediterranean, the Baltic and Northern Europe, the British Isles and the Canary Islands.

While cruisers are spoiled for choice in this part of the world, it can be difficult to know where to begin when researching voyages.

To help you out, I've narrowed down my favorites for the best cruises to Europe for different types of travelers, including families, couples and solo travelers.

Note: Pricing was accurate at the time of publication. Fares are subject to change without notice.

Best European cruises for families: Disney Fantasy

european river cruise companies list

Disney Cruise Line is great for kids; if you're planning a cruise in Europe with children, Disney Fantasy is a logical choice for the best European cruise for families.

Character meet and greets, awe-inspiring nighttime entertainment and fun dining experiences mean your kiddos will never be bored. The ship's stellar kids clubs go above and beyond with a likeness of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and Star Wars flight simulators. They can even go to the Marvel Super Hero Academy, where kids can train to become protectors of the universe.

Disney Fantasy is not the line's newest ship, meaning it's a bit more manageable in terms of both size and price. It's not the oldest, either, so families will find more things to do on board than on the line's smallest vessels.

Ashore, Disney's family-friendly excursions will take you to laze on the beach, explore museums and learn about history.

In May 2025, Disney Fantasy will begin three- to 12-night cruises to Western Europe, the British Isles and the Mediterranean . Cruise fares start from $362 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. You can visit ports like Glasgow, Scotland, and Liverpool, U.K., on cruises from Southampton, U.K.; you can also visit Florence and Rome (Civitavecchia) on Barcelona sailings.

Best European cruises for couples: Viking Star

european river cruise companies list

If you're a couple seeking an upscale Mediterranean or Northern Europe experience that offers real value and a chance to reconnect with your partner, look no further than Viking .

The line's Viking Star sails various Northern Europe and Mediterranean itineraries, and the European ports the ship visits offer plenty of opportunities for you to feel the love. Take a pizza-making class together in Italy , or get a little giggly at a wine tasting in Greece.

Viking includes at least one free shore excursion per port in its fares. That means you can wander Europe's romantic cobblestone streets, hand-in-hand with your sweetie, without paying a penny extra.

While fares aren't the cheapest you'll find, you'll get a lot for your money. In addition to the tours, Viking includes Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and beer and wine with lunch and dinner in its prices.

Plus, all cabins on Viking's ships have balconies, which is great if you want some fresh air but feel like keeping to yourselves. Complimentary room service is available 24/7, so you can order dinner to your cabin for a charming alfresco dining experience for two.

Want even more ways to pamper yourselves together? Check out the phenomenal thermal suite in the ship's spa ; they offer saunas and steam rooms, tile loungers and aromatherapy rooms at no extra charge. Or, splurge on a couples massage, which will leave both of you feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Even better, Viking ships don't allow children on board. It's a great excuse for you and your significant other to rekindle the romance without other passengers' kids ruining the vibe.

Through 2025, Viking's Northern Europe and Mediterranean sailings range from seven to 28 nights. The ship visits ports such as Barcelona; Rome (Civitavecchia) and Venice, Italy; Athens and Santorini, Greece; Istanbul; Bergen, Norway; and Reykjavik.

Fares start from $400 per person, per night for a balcony cabin on a Western Mediterranean itinerary.

Best European cruises for seniors: Seabourn Sojourn

european river cruise companies list

If you're a senior traveler who loves great food and excellent wine, one of the best luxury European cruises you can book is a cruise to the Canary Islands on Seabourn 's Seabourn Sojourn.

The small ship carries fewer than 500 passengers, and you won't find raucous parties or tons of children. Instead, you'll be met with stellar service, gourmet food, a room with a view (all cabins have at least a window), and relative peace and quiet. The long itineraries are ideal for wealthier passengers with lots of time to travel.

Seabourn Sojourn's voyages to the Canaries span 12 to 26 days and visit the islands of La Palma, Gran Canaria and Madeira; they also visit Lisbon. Fares start from $314 per person, per night for a suite on a March 2025 sailing. Extras like Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol (including the in-room minibar) are rolled into the fares.

Best for solo cruisers: Norwegian Epic

european river cruise companies list

When Norwegian Epic debuted in 2010, it introduced Norwegian Cruise Line 's first cabins for solo travelers. Designed with single beds and a bit less square footage, these so-called studio cabins are clustered around an exclusive lounge reserved for solos. Special activities allow folks traveling alone to mingle and make new friends.

Since Norwegian Epic began sailing, nearly all of the line's new ships — Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva — have been built with accommodations for one , which don't charge occupants a single supplement. However, it's Norwegian Epic that has a presence in the Mediterranean and Greek Isles , offering solo cruisers a chance to explore Europe on a ship with cabins just for them.

On board, passengers have plenty of choices for activities and dining. In addition to the usual cruise-ship offerings — pool games, dance parties, game shows, trivia and movie screenings — Epic offers many fun diversions. Options include an adults-only beach club at the back of the ship, spa treatments, a bowling alley and even gaming lessons (the latter three for a fee).

The vessel sails six- to 12-night voyages, round-trip from Rome (Civitavecchia), calling on ports that include Naples and Florence (Livorno), Italy; Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza, Spain; Marseille and Cannes, France; and Mykonos and Santorini, Greece, among others. At press time, studio fares started at $161 per night for a 12-night sailing. The voyage includes a two-night pre-cruise stay with tours of Rome and features port calls on Santorini, Mykonos and Corfu, Greece; Valletta (Malta); and Sicily, Naples and Florence (Livorno), Italy.

Best European party cruises: Virgin Voyages' Resilient Lady

european river cruise companies list

If your Europe bucket list includes the Greek islands, you don't want to sail with children and you enjoy a lively party atmosphere, you can't go wrong with Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady. The third ship in the line's fleet, Resilient Lady offers some of the best cruises to the Greek Islands and other places in the Mediterranean.

Expect a casual vibe where passengers dress up like mermaids, crew dress up like drag queens and performers look like real people. Toss in an onboard tattoo parlor, a food court ( it's not a buffet ), free fitness classes and an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on the ship; you get a product that has turned the cruise industry on its head.

Wild nights on board include raucous and sometimes raunchy theater shows, impromptu dance parties and Scarlet Night — a poolside bash reminiscent of a rave where everyone's dressed in red. If you attend enough daily activities, you might even be invited to a secret nighttime tour of the crew bar, drinks included.

The ship offers a regular program of seven- to 11-night voyages. Prices start from $174 per person, per night for an inside cabin on an eight-night cruise to France, Italy and Greece in April 2025.

Best European cruises for 'wow' factor: Hurtigruten's Richard With

european river cruise companies list

Looking for a sailing that no other cruise line offers and one that will make everyone on TikTok and Instagram jealous? I'm putting my money on a line you've likely never heard of: Hurtigruten .

The line began more than 130 years ago as a way for Norway's residents to move themselves and cargo up and down the Norwegian coast. It continues today as both a means of transportation and a way for cruisers to experience the country's culture.

On the cruise line's Norwegian Coastal Express route, Hurtigruten's Richard With ship calls on more than 30 ports in just six or seven days (depending on itinerary). Some are quick stops in the middle of the night while cargo is loaded and unloaded, but you could get off the ship in each port if you really wanted to. That in itself makes this itinerary buzzworthy.

Still need convincing? These voyages also cross into the Arctic Circle and sail into Geirangerfjord (northbound from Bergen to Kirkenes) and Trollfjord (southbound from Kirkenes to Bergen). The route affords absolutely breathtaking views and, of course, bragging rights.

The two routes can be combined into longer 13-day sailings, meaning you'd sail round-trip from Bergen and see all the fjords. Seven-night northbound itineraries from Bergen to Kirkenes start at $137 per person, per night for an inside cabin.

Bottom line

Ultimately, the best cruise to Europe is a bit subjective in that it depends where in Europe you'd like to go and what your travel style is. Be sure to weigh a combination of destination, price and onboard vibe when deciding which is best for you and your travel party.
