options of adding Cruise Control to my TJ

2002 4.0 5 speed. no factory cruise or cruise wiring taped back on the wiring harness by the master cyl. 1) buy the oem kit for $519 2) aftermarket JCWhitney style ~$100 Audiovox 3) anyone source junkyard parts from 4.0 cherokees or grand cherokees??? they produced millions of these jeeps with cruise control - wrecked wranglers are non-existent in junkyards around here. I'm guessing its probably like that all over the southeast. - the later model cherokees had the same steering wheel buttons as my TJ would have.. more than likely have the necessary clock spring for the steering wheel among other parts. my local pull-a-part has 13 models so I'm guessing I could find 99% of what I need to convert it over. my only problem would be the factory wiring that mine didn't have. does anyone have the kit they sold with the optional wiring? I could just borrow for a few dollars and copy the wiring? maybe I could share that with the fellow members thanks for the help  

I'm also interested in adding cruise to an 01 wrangler. So let me know what you find out. Too bad they used the vaccuum operated cables.  

been just scoping craigslist for used grand cherokees/regular cherokees looking for engine bay pics to see whats up.. seems like those two trucks had the cruise mounded on the pass side and the intake tube on the driver's side. the instrument cluster even looks the same in the old cherokees as my TJ. same layout/size I won't be able to hit up the local pull a part until next week.. maybe there is some site I can go to so I can cross reference part numbers? anybody know of a good online OEM part catalog??  

I installed an after market cruise on my 97 and it worked very well. I can't remember the brand, but I bought it locally here in Omaha from a auto accessories company. It was less than $100 back then. PM me if you want to contact the company.

Amen... lol $35 from 4wd.com...cheaper if you pick up the parts and make it yourself. Just gotta remember to disengage before clutching and/or stopping.  

I dunno... seems like 99% of the parts can be gotten from a 97-01 XJ Cherokee. those are alot easier to find in the junkyard than wranglers so I guess I'll go fish and keep ya'll updated.  

03 rubi, do you have a manual transmission? And where did you pick up the wiring for the vss constant? Or is it tied into engine RPM if you have a manual?

I have cruise on my sahara but also ABS When you hit a bump the ABS kicks the cruise off  

so far I have an 01 XJ cherokee engine wiring harness for $50 a clock spring and steering wheel buttons off the same cherokee for another $50 $100 just need the under hood servo now. the cherokee one mounts on the pass side.. the TJ ones mount on the driver's side... they look the same though. I'm going to take apart the harness of the cherokee and see if I can't 'graft' the piece I need to make the cruise work.  

Good luck to you Lukem80, I'm doing a test of cruise control, but I'm trying to see if I can adapt a chevy electronic cruise control to work. I think I may be able to.  

I think any cruise control would only need: some sort of speed control signal (like VSS) a servo hooked to the throttle body (vacuum/electric) something to tell it to turn off when you hit the brakes/clutch (wired into brake/clutch switch) and the control module... you know.. the buttons what are we gonna do when all the new cars that are drive by wire become old and needed to be modified ???? SOL  

I already know what I need, I added cruise to my truck, it's just trying to find the VSS output to be correct for my application.  

I have all the factory cruise "add on"(Under Hood Harness Only) from a 00 TJ. Bought from dealer, installed by me, vehicle totaled, harness removed. The rest was sold already. Surely someone can use this. Here is a link to my ad, TJ and XJ parts for sale for trade - JeepForum.com  

after looking at this crap all afternoon... I figured out that.. if your 01-02 TJ didn't come with cruise and you don't have the wiring you could skip having to replace the clockspring if you just decide to mount the cruise control buttons elsewhere. so all you'd need is the underhood servo throttle cable thing, cruise control buttons, and a homemade wiring harness. maybe $70 bucks total  

found this website Mopar Connector Repair Kit Website that led me to the part number Mopar Package # 05013979AA seems like you can go to a dealership and get this for the speed control servo. its the 'pigtail' and some wires to make your own harness. I think it can't be more than $15 you can find other part numbers for engine sensor repair kits on there also.

2001 cruise help Just curious - I'm trying to accomplish the same thing - put a 2002 cruise kit on a 2001 xl without cruise (2001 kits are not available anywhere). I bought all the parts as described by NavyRedneck. My question (prior to tearing the thing apart) is this - on the 2002 wheel with cruise which will be installed on the '01 truck, there are 2 plugs. One plug (with 5 Prongs) looks like it will plug right into the new clock spring. Where does the other plug (I think 2 prongs) go? I don't see anywhere in the new clock spring for it. Is it just an extra that doesn't get used with this type of "hillbilly conversion"? Maybe it will be obvious once I get into it but just thought I'd ask in advance. Advance thanks to anyone with any insight.  

It Works! Well, after a bit of uncertainty, I tackled it on my '01 automatic w/out cruise and...IT WORKS:lol::lol: Here's what I did: 1. Ordered speed kit off ebay for '02-'04 Ford SuperDuty Diesel (Ford part number 2C3Z-9A818-BAB). Includes leather wheel, brake switch and, clock spring which you do not use (see #2 below). 2. Ordered correct clock spring off ebay for '01 with cruise (Ford part number is 1L3Z-14A664-AA). It was actually a Dorman product, but the numbers crossed. Dorman part number was 525-213. 3. Hook it all up and you've got cruise - all of the buttons worked and the dash light even comes on. Thanks to NavyRedneck for this thread and to Klhansen for insight!!

If the kit is not available, then you have to build it yourself. You'll need the steering wheel for an XLT (plastic) or Lariat (leather). Plus the clock spring for your year. Plus the brake pedal actuator mentioned in the first post in this thread. Here's the steering wheel for an '01: 2001 SuperDuty steering wheels And here's the "cruise switch" that I suspect is the clock spring, but it might be the brake pedal actuator. So call Tousley and double-check before you order. Cruise Switch Note that I haven't actually done this, so contact moderator Kevin Hansen (klhansen) if you run into a snag.  

Ok so you don't actually need the cruise release switch and bracket, its a back up switch to cancel the cruise. The harness under the hood just needs to have the head cut off and attach the two wires together. The cruise will still turn off if and only if the main switch on the brake pedal(for brake lights) does not fail. So it is a safety item, but you can also just push the off button as well. Thats one route, you could also get the correct master cylinder that has the sensor on it, and just plug in the hanness under the hood. Just two possible options.

Yes and yes. The pressure switch harness under the hood is the same one you have to tie into for the kit. Look for it by the larger harness you spoke of, its usually tied off and capped. The cruise will cancel if you push the brake pedal if the brake light switch is not bad. The pressure switch on the master cylinder is a back up of sorts. If you get a master cylinder, you might want to get the ford recall harness for the pressure switch that been causing the fires.

Well...I gathered up the parts, all used,for 60 bucks,and i now have working cruise..yea!  

Hi, I have a 2001 f450 XL PSD. I installed the new steering wheel and clockspring. I checked power at the safety connector under the hood, and had 12 volts on the hot wire. I jumpered the connector to provide a bypass for the brake pressure switch. Went for a test drive - no speed control, and no cruise light on the dash when I first turn the key on. Any suggestions? Thanks gary  

If you jumpered the brake connector aren't you sending a constant brake signal? The add-on brake sensor is just a contact that shuts when the brakes are applied.  

Navy *******, Thanks for chiming in. The wiring diagram shows the brake pressure switch as normally closed, opening when pressure is applied. I tried it without the jumper, and it didn't work. Gary  

What year was the steering wheel for? Its is a normally closed switch. That's why the harness must be jumpered to mimic the switch in a non-brake pedal applied condition.

Installed good , called the Tech line to find out which wire was the speed sensor. Tech line person was very helpful and correct as to which wire was the speed sensor.

Surprisingly easy only had one little problem (me) gavethe tech a call he help me out. Working perfect I’m really happy with it
