Valiant Lady Sea Terrace Review & 360 Tour | Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages has gone out of its way to make everything related to cruising new and unique. The cabins are no exception. They are a cross between a funky hotel room and a modern ship cabin.

Here’s the low down on what to expect from the most common cabin type, the Virgin Voyages / Valiant Lady Sea Terrace Balcony Cabin (this particular information is from the Valiant Lady, however, their ships are all almost identical)

Using the chip wristband to open the door, you enter a “scene” where the lights come on and the motorized blinds open automatically, a nice “welcome home” for the first time entering your cabin.

Valiant Lady - Virgin Voyages - Cabin Bed

The tablet & tech in the cabin

Each cabin is equipped with a tablet that controls lighting scenes, on/off, as well as TV channels, movies, and ship information on the television. This works great until it breaks. On our third day, the tablet became unresponsive and it took a full day to get anyone to “reset our room” so we could use the tablet to control lights and television stations. It’s good to know that in the closet, there are manual switches to turn lights on and off if the tablet is unresponsive. There are also manual open and close switches for the motorized blinds.

What can you do with the in-room tablet:

  • Open & close the motorized blinds
  • Control lights in the room
  • Set predefined “scenes” and mood lighting
  • Tune to one of 4 TV stations
  • Launch movies from an entertainment section on the tablet
  • Contacting the steward for various things including making up the room, ordering towels, changing the bed configuration, request for ice & water, and getting your laundry picked up.

The Cabin Overview (Sea Terrace on Valiant Lady):

The size of the room is what you’d expect from a modern cruise ship. It’s not huge but it’s functional. At about 185 sq feet. The decor is minimalist but well done. Without the heavy wood and dated carpet styles found in many cruise ship cabins (even modern ships), the cabin is modern yet cozy, a difficult design to accomplish. Each cabin has a convertible bed (more on that below), a side table, a TV tray-style side table, an armchair, a small desk with a stool which is the only place you’ll be able to use the hair dryer, and the most convenient place to plug in devices to charge.

While the cabin has two other outlets on either side of the bed, they aren’t terribly convenient to use. It’s a bit of a surprise that the only European plug is at the desk, so those on European itineraries should consider bringing USA to EU converters. (PICS OF OUTLETS COMING)

A nicety is that each plug station also has USB ports for charging devices. However, with the evolution of charging cables and device requirements, this will become less useful over time.

360 Degree Virtual Tour – Valiant Lady Sea Terrace

Storage in the sea terrace cabins:.

The only storage in the room is a small cubby space upon entering each cabin and normally has 10 or fewer hangers. Oddly, the design choice made by Virgin Voyages was to separate the closet from the main space with just a curtain rather than doors. I thought this was odd initially, but it’s tastefully done. On a traditional cruise ship, this is where a door with a closet would exist. More hangers are available by asking the room steward, but do it fast & on the first day so they don’t run out. I was told by our steward that they sometimes run out of extra hangers on the first day.

There are 4 shallow drawers good for socks, t-shirts, etc. but they aren’t very spacious. Other cubbies in the closet space are used for the safe, life jackets, and towels, but those items can be rearranged to free up one larger cubby.

Finally, a couple of baskets are available which are convenient for dirty laundry.

Good to note is if you bring more than a couple of pieces of luggage, while there is room on the floor of the closet space, it’s not large enough to accommodate more than a couple of pieces of normal-sized luggage.

The Sea Terrace Bathroom:

A big surprise (or should I say a LITTLE surprise) is how tight and small the bathroom feels for a modern cruise ship. It’s rare to get a large cabin at sea, much less a large bathroom, but the bathrooms seem exceptionally small and tight on the Valiant Lady. Another surprise in the bathroom is the lack of plugs for shavers or a hair dryer. So if you are an electric shaver person, you’ll be doing your shave at the desk in the cabin.

A real plus of the Valiant Lady cabin bathrooms is the showers. While tight, they have an amazing rain shower head and hand shower. Additionally, products like body wash, shampoo, and conditioner are quite good. Since many ships and hotels have gone to the wall-mounted refillable bottles, the quality of the product can be no-name and unappealing, however, the brand Red Flower which supplies the product to Virgin for the showers is quite good!

Valiant Lady Sea Terrace Bathroom

The Bed – Converting to a sofa:

The bed is surprisingly comfortable, however, the pillows are not.

Unique to Virgin Voyages staterooms is the ability to convert the bed into a full sofa which is quite comfortable and makes the space feel so much larger. This is great when you’re trying to get some work done in the cabin or plan on having travel buddies over before dinner to chat. It does make the cabin feel more like a living space and is a great alternative to only having the bed to use for seating, sleeping, watching tv, etc.

The caveat to this cool feature is the effort it takes to convert (for the steward). While our steward was happy to make the conversion, she did sort of make it known that it took time and was a pain in the ass. She requested to do it during the morning service and would then convert it back to a bed before their final 7:30 PM turn down.

Sea Terrace Room Virgin Voyages

One side of the bed acts as the arm of the sofa when converted but is stationary so the person sleeping on that side of the bed will always have the arm of the sofa by their head. A nice touch is an overarm tray that is on the sofa for overnight water glass or a place to put your phone but bumping into it during the night made for an interrupted sleep some nights.

Traveling Solo, ask for this cabin configuration

The great thing about the Virgin Voyages cabins are the flexibility to arrange the seating and beds in various ways. If you’re traveling solo, ask for this configuration and you’ll have comfortable seating every day without having to worry about converting the bed / sofa.

The balcony, (Sea Terrace) and hammock

The star of the cabins on the Valiant Lady (and other Virgin Voyages ships) is the hammocks on nearly all balconies . There’s something special about being suspended and slowly rocking away while viewing the ocean from your private space.  However, to some people this may be a hammock, to others it’s a sling – so I’ve been well informed. This makes using it questionable for someone like me with real germaphobic tendencies. It’s a novelty and it really is a nice relaxing hammock if you can get past the fact that these aren’t likely NOT cleaned frequently.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Virgin Voyages Valiant Lady Cabins

Is there a hairdryer in the cabin.

Yes! It’s actually pretty good too!

Is there an iron in the cabin / is it available

No, unfortunately. And access to an iron does not seem to be available.

Is there a phone in the cabin?

Can you buy a hammock like the one on virgin voyages ships.

Definitely! They sell them on board (two versions), but I understand they often run out. But they’re available (not in red) directly from the manufacturer Yellow Leaf (here)

What brands of hair products are on Virgin Voyages?

Red Flower Moonflower Hydrating Hair Wash, 10.2 fl. oz.

I booked a $5,910 balcony cabin for a 7-day Virgin Voyages cruise. The 225-square-foot room was big on luxury.

  • On a recent Virgin Voyages cruise, I booked a 225-square-foot sea terrace room.
  • Starting at $844 a night, the room has a balcony and a queen-sized bed that transforms into a couch.
  • With a rainfall shower and smart controls for mood lighting and entertainment, it felt luxurious.

Insider Today

I took my first luxury cruise last summer, sailing on a seven-day Mediterranean adventure with Virgin Voyages, an award-winning, adults-only cruise line that's been operating since 2021, according to the company's website .

Aboard Virgin Voyages' Valiant Lady ship , I slept in a cabin with a sea terrace. It had a starting rate of $5,910 for a weeklong stay for two people, a representative for Virgin Voyages told Business Insider.

The cruise sailed round-trip from Barcelona to ports in Italy and France. And my room was so glamorous that I spent more time in my cabin than anticipated. Here's a look at every detail that made it worth the price.

Virgin Voyages' Valiant Lady ship has 1,408 cabins and suites. My room was toward the back of deck 12.

virgin voyages sea terrace

I booked a third-tier stateroom with a balcony — a step above sea-view cabins , which only have a window, and two steps above an interior room with no view.

The room was 225 square feet, including the balcony. I thought the cabin made great use of the tiny space while including luxury details.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Inside, there was a queen-sized bed, a desk, a bathroom, and plenty of hidden storage compartments. Considering the room's small size, I was surprised by the ample floor space. I never felt cramped in my cabin.

At the front of the cabin, the bathroom was stocked with toiletries and had storage spaces to keep the counter free of clutter.

virgin voyages sea terrace

The bathroom felt luxurious thanks to a rainfall showerhead.

Across from the bathroom, a clever curtain hid the closet. Inside, I spotted a shelf with two empty bins for extra storage and a cabinet holding emergency life vests, towels, a safe, and drawers I filled with clothing.

Next to the closet, the desk against the wall had an ottoman tucked underneath it. I thought this made the room feel bigger.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Beneath the desk, I spotted a hidden mini fridge, which I used to keep my drinks cold.

At the back of the room, there was a queen-sized bed I found comfortable. Next to it, a thin nightstand was light enough to be moved around the room as needed.

virgin voyages sea terrace

I learned from the Virgin Voyages app that crew members could transform the bed into a couch upon request. This made the cabin feel more like a living room during the day.

The cabin also had an in-room tablet with entertainment and smart controls. So I didn't have to leave my bed to change the lighting or close the curtains.

virgin voyages sea terrace

From "Hangover" to "Photoshoot," different settings on the tablet changed the mood lighting around the room.

I thought the best part of the cabin was the balcony. It had a table and chairs as well as a large, netted hammock.

virgin voyages sea terrace

I spent a lot of time on my balcony during the voyage. From fresh air to sunset views, I thought it was totally worth the upgrade for a private outdoor space.

With multipurpose furniture and plenty of storage, I thought the 225-square-foot room was just big enough to keep my partner and me comfortable.

virgin voyages sea terrace

I'd definitely book a sea terrace cabin with Virgin Voyages again. And I'd recommend it to any adult travelers who want to feel wrapped in luxury while at sea.

Embarking on a cruise with Virgin Voyages is an experience filled with luxury, comfort, and innovative design, particularly when you book a stay in a Virgin Voyages Sea Terrace cabin. Let’s look at what makes these cabins stand out for sea adventurers.

The Sea Terrace cabins are ingeniously designed to maximize space and comfort within their 225 square feet. Each cabin showcases a perfect blend of style and functionality, designed to cater to the needs of modern travellers.

The Sea Bed: A Convertible Innovation

One of the most intriguing features of the Sea Terrace cabin is the ‘Sea Bed’. This convertible bed can quickly transform from a cosy full-sized bed into a comfortable sofa, offering flexibility and convenience to guests.

One thing to note, however, is that this feature is less evident than it used to be. When Virgin Voyages first launched, you would enter your cabin with the Sea Bed converted into a sofa. However, sailors questioned where the Bed was.

You can still request that they make your Sea Bed into a sofa, but it’s now on request from your cabin attendant. If you never ask, it will be configured as a bed for your whole sailing rather than changed during the daytime, then back to a bed later that evening.

Virgin Voyages Sea Terrace

Ample Storage and Amenities

Despite its minimalist design, the Sea Terrace cabin efficiently utilizes space. The cabin includes a sizeable closet with shelves and space for luggage storage, ensuring that your items are neatly organized.

You can also fit most large suitcases under the bed, so you can hide them away once you are fully unpacked and ready for your incredible Virgin Voyage.

Cabins tend to come with ten hangars; however, more can be requested via the cabin table or by speaking with your stateroom host.

Technological Enhancements

The cabin boasts an in-room tablet, allowing guests to easily control the mood lighting, curtains, and entertainment system. This integration of technology adds a layer of sophistication to the cabin experience.

In every Sea Terrace cabin of Virgin Voyages, the handwoven hammocks are more than just a symbol of relaxation—they embody a story of empowerment and positive change. These hammocks, crafted by the skilled artisans of Thailand’s hill tribes, are a product of Yellow Leaf Hammocks’ mission to create ethical job opportunities and uplift communities from extreme poverty.

Each hammock is not only a testament to the unique cultural heritage of the Mlabri Tribe but also represents a commitment to sustainable practices and community transformation, making your stay with Virgin Voyages an experience intertwined with meaningful impact and global sustainability.

Compact Yet Functional Bathroom

The bathroom, though compact, is well-equipped with what we have voted the best show at sea, with an incredible waterfall shower, providing a refreshing and luxurious bathing experience. Premium toiletries are included, with wonderful Red Flower Hand Soap, shampoo, Conditioner and Shower Gel.

They have a warm ocean scent, and Kieran has medium curly hair and mildly sensitive skin and has never had any issues with the included toiletries onboard.

First Impressions of Our Sea Terrace Room

Some features of the sea terrace cabin, is it worth paying more for a sea terrace, final thoughts on our virgin voyages sea terrace review.

Virgin has a certain style, a flair if you will. This is evident from the moment you open up the door of your cabin. The curtains open bathing the room in natural light and the TV plays a heavenly chord. It’s the perfect way to welcome guests!

virgin voyages sea terrace

I was surprised at the size of the cabin. They measure 225ft² (around 21m²). It seemed pretty spacious (more available floor space than my bedroom by a factor of three). We never bumped into each other, even with stuff out and all over the floor as we got changed in a rush. The massive mirror on the outside of the bathroom section really helped with this too.

I had read that the rooms were a bit IKEA-ish. A little cold, white-walled and missing lots of the “cruise style” that people were accustomed to. It is true that it is more like a cool Yotel than a fancy business Best Western but it suits our style to a tee. They have added some wooden touches to warm the room up, and I dare say that it was a wide choice but honestly, I didn’t miss the slightly early 90s feel I’ve seen elsewhere.

We were impressed at the 43 inch TV and loved the safety demo which everyone needs to watch on it. It’s a musical extravaganza!

The Storage

When the Scarlet Lady first took to the water, one of the biggest complaints in the room was the storage. There is a wardrobe area which originally had cubby holes and a rail. Well, Virgin listened to the feedback and converted some of the cubbies to drawers, put in another little unit with a couple of baskets that serve as drawers and added a large top shelf. In the wardrobe, you’ll find a safe that was plenty big enough for all of our cameras and would fit a normal laptop too.

virgin voyages sea terrace

We had more than enough space for all of our things but maybe we brought less than most people. We each had hand luggage with enough clothes for two outfits a day but no more. Some people are upset that the bed doesn’t fit their cases underneath it but we kept ours in the wardrobe and actually, our smaller cases would have fit.

To find out everything you need to pack for a Virgin Voyage, check out our packing guide here

Under the desk, you’ll find a couple more shelves but I don’t think we used them for anything. There is also a fridge in which we stored leftovers and our two allowed bottles of sparkling wine. Finally, there is a wide but shallow drawer in the white section of the SeaBed which not many people notice.

virgin voyages sea terrace

The Convertible SeaBed

The double bed in the room converts into twin beds but not in the normal way. One half of the bed swings to the side so the occupants will be sleeping head to head at a 90° angle. You can ask your cabin steward to make it up this way as a sofa during the day which gives you a ton of space but I would only bother with this if you are planning to socialise in the cabin. We used the top of the white section for bits and bobs most of the time and enjoyed the easier access to the drawer underneath.

virgin voyages sea terrace

The mattress of the bed was quite firm but not hard. I found them very comfortable but if you like a softer bed, it might take a couple of nights to adjust to.

On one side of the bed is the arm of the sofa and over this, they have fashioned a bedside table of sorts allowing you to have a glass of water without the fear of it slipping off. There are plugs on this side of the bed but not on the other. If you like to have your phone in bed then bring a long cable.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Our Bathroom

The bathroom is quite small. I wasn’t expecting it to be any bigger so I was perfectly happy. It was like something you would have on an overnight train. Mind you, I don’t do the majority of my getting ready in the bathroom. I shower, wrap in a towel and get out. I can imagine that with a smaller space to manoeuvre in, you would find it a little uncomfortable. The majority of the counter space is over the area with the toilet so you really have to make sure you’re not knocking anything off into the bowl! Even if something just falls on the floor, there isn’t a lot of room to pick it up. There was a little cubby hole underneath but it was only just big enough for our two little washbags.

virgin voyages sea terrace

I loved the sink which made good use of the sink. It was a separate bowl which gave just a few inches on the counter whilst also being a nicely sized sink. Here you’ll find the charcoal soap which really divides the crowd. It is very trendy, and charcoal is good for your skin, but if that black gets under your nails, it can be tricky to get back out. Luckily, the small towels that say makeup make you feel a little less guilty about smudging them with charcoal.

virgin voyages sea terrace

The shower was really decently sized. It was strong and I really like the shampoo and conditioner that were provided. The shower had a real door rather than a curtain which I loved. I cannot bear curtains that try and stick to you as you shower and if there is a slight rocking, you can guarantee you’ll get that flimsy curtain stuck on your butt at some point! Oh, and did I mention the rainfall head? What a treat!

A Look at the Sea Terrace

The terraces are quite large with plenty of room for two people to hang out. However, you might be fighting for the best seat on Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady, the hammock!

virgin voyages sea terrace

The bright red hammocks that adorn most Sea Terrace balconies are so comfortable. They are sewn the other way around to a traditional hammock, allowing you to sit or lie down easily. The gentle rocking of the boat means the whole thing swaps slowly and lulls you into a very happy stupor. You can sit with a drink but you cannot smoke or vape out here so bear that in mind whilst you are chilling out.

Nice Touches

We loved the corkscrew/bottle opener provided in the room. I know, I know, that seems lame but it was one of those beautiful design touches that Virgin does so well.

On the desk, you will find the room’s tablet. This smart device can be used for lots of handy functions. You can control the curtains and lighting (more on that in a second). You can scroll through loads of free films to watch on the TV. It is also good for communicating with your room steward if you need extra towels, water or want the bed converted into a sofa.

virgin voyages sea terrace

The Lighting

Virgin loves mood lighting. If you have ever flown Virgin Atlantic , you’ll have noticed that their planes are full of coloured lights that gently change throughout the flight. Well, Virgin Voyages is no different. The tablet in the room has some fun mood lighting settings. There is a cinema setting that dims most lights and closes the curtains, a hangover setting that is just a cool blue light and a “let’s get it on” setting. This rather special option turns on the red/pink hue and the TV even plays music!

Every room is supplied with a nice carafe of water. This is free and topped up always so you should never run dry. We know that some cruise lines make you pay for a water package but Virgin’s drinks set up includes water in your room and throughout the ship as standard. It’s a welcome touch that it comes in such a nice vessel.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Absolutely! I was pretty sure that this was the case but having now done a cruise in an interior cabin, I can confirm it for sure!

When jet lag struck on day two of our cruise, I went to sit out on our balcony, bathed in red light. I could see three thunderstorms flashing in the distance and even made a little birdy friend. (I am basically Snow White). It was also so lovely to order room service and eat it on the balcony in the morning. The sound of the sea, the Bahamian breeze and utterly delicious jalapeño cheddar pastries…who could ask for more?

Well…maybe a Rockstar Suite. Maybe next time?

In general, I am impressed at how much feedback Virgin Voyages have taken on board. Seeing how they’ve listened to the passengers and tweaked the rooms to make them a little more homely but maintaining Virgin’s style. Virgin brands have always been good to swap, change and edit so I can only imagine everything on the ships will improve over time.

As for the Sea Terrace, when we were booking our cruise we debated about getting a sea terrace and I am SO glad that we spent the extra. Having now done a cruise with an interior cabin for comparison, I’d opt for a balcony every single time!

Virgin Voyages – Balcony Cabin Review (Sea Terrace): Bed, Storage, and Bathroom

If you are considering a cruise with Virgin Voyages you may be wondering what the cabins are like, I’ve just returned from a cruise onboard Scarlet Lady staying in a Sea Terrace (balcony) cabin.

Most elements are almost identical to that of an ocean view and inside cabin so this post is also relevant to those cabin categories.

In this article, we will look at if the bed is comfortable, what the storage is like, the bathroom, the minibar, the balcony hammock, and lots more.

This is the cabin that I stayed in on the Virgin Voyages website: Sea Terrace (affiliate link).

Virgin Voyage’s Converting ‘Sea Bed’

The cabin features a bed that converts from the day layout shown below into a full-sized bed. This converting bed design definitely was a divisive subject when the ship was launched.

When I first heard about the bed I have to admit I didn’t really understand why Virgin would make such a strange choice. Royal Caribbean did try something similar in the early 1990s, it was a more basic version and the idea was scrapped.

The original idea was that the bed would be converted each day but Virgin have changed this and the bed now starts in bed mode and is only converted when guests request it.

I personally didn’t feel the need to have the bed converted. I worry too much about the extra work for the room stewards and I’m also a fan of an afternoon nap. During my cruise I never had the bed converted.

Virgin Voyages Converting Bed by Day:

When the bed is in day mode the bedding is taken off the bed and the edge piece is swung around into the position shown below. The bedding is stored inside the bed/sofa in the white space you can see at the end.

Scarlet Lady Virgin Voyages Balcony Cabin Sea Terrace Cabin Bed

Virgin Voyages Converting Bed by Night:

When the bed is in night mode the white box where the sofa part would go is visible. I used this area to store a few things such as my purchases in the Virgin Voyages gift shop that can be seen below.

The table is designed so that it can be used with the bed and sofa designs. I didn’t really use this table, instead just putting my drink/photo on the white box area.

Almost all cruise ships which have double/queen/king-sized beds are made up of two single beds pushed together. You may be able to feel where the beds join together but I don’t think you’d be able to feel it on this bed as much as you might on some other cruise lines.

When the bed is in bed form you wouldn’t ever know that it wasn’t a permanent part of the room. The cabin looks like most other cruise ship cabins when the bed is like this.

virgin voyages scarlet lady sea terrace balcony cabin

The Sea Bed Was Susprisingly Comfortable

I have to admit before my cruise I was concerned about how comfortable the bed could realistically be. I am happy to report that it is very comfortable and is also full length.

The bed is approximately 2metres long which is the average length of beds sold in Europe.

If you’re over about 6’2 your feet will probably hang off the end (but you’re probably used to that)!

I was a little worried that the bed would feel like a camping bed but that couldn’t be further from the truth, the mattress is full thickness and a mattress topper is laid at night.

You wouldn’t know that the bed converts when you are in it. The below photo shows how our cabin would look on a typical day. I usually wouldn’t share photos of my cabin looking so messy but there were no drawers in the cabin to tidy away things like hairdryers or hairbrushes.

virgin voyages bed review cabin

Does The Bed Have to Convert?

The bed can be left as a bed throughout the entire cruise if that is what the guest would like. I was a bit worried that I’d have to miss out on my afternoon naps because the bed would have been put away but the passengers are in control of when/if the bed is made into a day bed.

I was only on Scarlet Lady for a weekend so had very little time for napping, but I still appreciated the bed being left as a bed. I don’t mind sitting on the bed if I am in the cabin during the day.

At the moment the bed starts in bed mode and will only be changed to the daybed mode if requested.

Do Suitcases Fit Under The Bed?

You could possibly put your suitcase under the part of the bed that is fixed but you would be able to see it all of the time. The bed is also quite low so if you have a large suitcase it might not be high enough.

I’d suggest putting your suitcase in the bottom of the closet if you are cruising on Scarlet Lady. Alternatively, there is a lot of floor space at the end of the cabin by the chair and desk where I’m sure the suitcases could go.

I did fit my suitcase under the bed, just to try it but usually kept my suitcase in the bottom of the closet. My suitcase is a size small and it JUST fit.

Virgin voyages cabin suitcase under bed

There Aren’t any Bedside Tables

There aren’t any kinds of bedside tables for the bed. If you are on the side closest to the bathroom you can use the big white box to rest your phone/drinks on but if you’re on the other side you’ll have to rest it on the floor.

Sometimes it is nice to have a glass of water by the bed and I did worry a little that I would knock it over. It was okay but definitely could have been improved with some form of bedside tables.

At The Other End of The Cabin (A Little Surprise!)

At the other end of the cabin, you’ll find a desk, a chair/stool, and a bigger chair in the corner. The cabin feels very spacious because of the lack of extra things in the room. I personally really like this style as I’m not generally a person who likes much too ‘stuff’.

Other cabins would usually have a sofa/couch or big chair in this part of the room.

virgin voyages scarlet lady sea terrace balcony cabin bed

Under the desk is a minibar and inside the minibar is a ‘time to play kit’ available to buy for $30. I’ve never seen anything like that in a cruise ship cabin before!

virgin voyages adult toys time to play kit

How Many Plug Sockets are There on Scarlet Lady?

On the desk, there is 1 European socket, 1 US socket, and 2 USB sockets. By the side of the bed, there are 2 USB sockets and 1 US socket on both sides. Bringing the total to 10! Amazing.

The plug sockets behind the chair are a meter or so away from the bed so unless you have a long arm you would need a long charger to lay in bed and browse on your phone. Arguably you’d be out enjoying yourself rather than doing this anyway!

If you are ever curious about which plug sockets a cabin will have, check out our full list here, featuring a searchable table (it might be an idea to favorite this one for the next time you need it): Complete Cruise Ship Plug Socket Guide: Search by Ship

No Drawers – At All

I think it’s important to note that there are no other drawers or shelves in the cabin apart from those found in the wardrobe/closet area by the door.

I pack very light so this isn’t a problem for me but I do imagine that it’ll be a problem for people who like to pack more than I do.

We only cruised for the weekend so living out of our suitcases without any problem. If I was cruising for longer I would find this to be more of a problem.

I really missed having a drawer for chargers and items like my camera or sunglasses. Usually, on a cruise, there will be a drawer under the desk where all of these things will go but because of the cabin’s minimalistic design, there are no drawers at all.

This meant that the cabin often looked messy, which I didn’t like.

virgin voyages scarlet lady cabin desk mini bar mirror and stool

I loved the number of mirrors in the cabin, it’s definitely a very photogenic room. The entire room has mood lighting which is controlled by the tablet you can see on the desk in the photo above.

The tablet also controls the TV and curtains in the cabin.

A word of warning: The way that the curtains work is that they are opened/closed by the tablet. You can manually open them but as soon as you open the curtains an inch the entire curtain will be opened. Make sure you’re adequately dressed before you decide to peak at what the weather is like outside!

A Good Sized Closet/Wardrobe

The closet area is a pretty good size with 7 shelves on top of each other inside a cupboard and a place for hanging clothes. There isn’t a door on the hanging section but it does have a curtain.

There is enough space in the bottom of the wardrobe for a suitcase to go and I ended up with my shoes down here too. There’s also a shelf at the top where you can put a few things. I’d recommend putting things here that you don’t need all the time like the pool towels.

scarlet lady wardrobe closet area storage space

I talk more about this area of the cabin in my video review below. I always look at if Virgin have made any changes since I was first on board:

The Balcony Hammock Was AMAZING!

The balcony was a decent size but the hammock was my favorite part.

The balcony also has two seats and a table and I’d recommend you move these to the side if you’re going to be spending a lot of time in the hammock, I enjoyed swinging on it and you’d bang into the chairs if you didn’t move them.

Each hammock is handwoven and it was SO MUCH FUN. I have to admit I definitely thought it was a gimmick before I sat in the hammock, I thought I’d just sit in it to have a photo taken but I ended up spending about an hour sat here.

virgin voyages scarlet lady hammock on the balcony

The hammock was a lot easier to get into than it might look. The fabric bunches together so you just have to sit down then stretch out, you aren’t climbing onto it like how it looks above. That would be nearly impossible.

The Virgin Voyages’ Cruise Ships Have Tiny Bathrooms

The cabin bathroom was clean and functional, but tiny. The view below was taken from inside the shower with the main door to the cabin being behind the towels on the right.

It’s by far the smallest cruise ship cabin bathroom I’ve had but I did like how Virgin have made the toilet seat a different shape from all of the other cruise lines, nobody else has even tried that one!

The actual shower was a great waterfall design and the actual shower space was a good size.

The tricky part came when getting out of the shower as the door takes up most of the main room. I usually get out of the shower and flip my head over to put a towel on my head, if I did this in this cabin I would probably hit my head on the toilet. So I didn’t…

Again there are no drawers or storage space in the bathroom.

virgin voyages scarlet lady bathroom

In the rest of the world, soap is white but on a Virgin Voyages cruise, it’s black! Black soap!

Would I Recommend This Cabin?

I love the design of the cabin and the way that technology is used with the tablet controlling the mood lighting. I also really enjoyed the hammock on the balcony and the number of plug sockets in the cabin was a real plus. That said, the cabin isn’t one of my favorites. I think I’d struggle with the lack of storage for a cruise longer than a weekend and the tiny bathroom was a disappointment for me.

I’ve just returned from a cruise onboard Scarlet Lady, I had an amazing time but it wasn’t what I expected AT ALL. To find out what the cruise was like, and if I’d recommend it, check out this post:

Too hip or just right? Here's what it was really like sailing on Virgin Voyages for the first time

Summer Hull

With a nighttime show called "Never Sleep Alone" that awards golden condoms to participants, an onboard tattoo parlor and in-room music and lighting settings with options like "get it on" and "hangover mode," adults-only Virgin Voyages clearly caters to a kid-free crowd. Still, I had no idea what to expect as I stepped onto Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady .

Leading up to its maiden voyage in 2021, Virgin Voyages marketed itself as the cruise line for vacationers who otherwise weren't interested in traditional cruising. It aimed to appeal to those who were young and hip, wanted to party and craved an atmosphere without little kids running around.

Up until recently, I'd only ever sailed with Disney Cruise Line — and with my kids in tow. However, the Virgin Voyages concept has intrigued me since it launched.

Could Richard Branson's edgy Virgin Voyages truly be a perfect match for trips without kids? Or, would I feel completely out of place and overwhelmed by the rock star attitude featured throughout the cruise line's ships?

virgin voyages sea terrace

There was only one way to satisfy my curiosity — I booked a sailing on Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady.

Would the four-night cruise from Miami , with stops in both Key West, Florida, and Bimini, Bahamas, impress me enough to consider Virgin Voyages for future trips? Here's what I took away from the experience — and whether I'd cruise with Virgin Voyages again.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

There's a surprisingly diverse crowd on board

Like many people, I went into my cruise expecting most passengers (or "sailors," as the line calls them) to be millennials based on the flashy marketing I've seen from the line. Much to my surprise, though, there was a fair mix of people on my sailing.

Sure, there were millennials in their late 20s, 30s and even early 40s — including me, as I fall within the oldest bracket for that generation — but for every 27-year-old on board, there was also someone close to 70 years old like the cruise line's founder, Richard Branson.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Last year, Tom McAlpin, the president and CEO of Virgin Voyages, told TPG's resident cruise expert Gene Sloan that on early sailings of Scarlet Lady, the average passenger age was in the 50s, with plenty on board in their 60s and 70s. Based on my trip, I'd say that is still a pretty accurate representation.

After a few days on board, it became clear that what passengers had in common wasn't the age listed in their passports but rather the shared desire to have a good time. For the most part, my fellow cruisers were a diverse, inclusive and vibrant group of vacationers who were all eager to strike up conversations with others, regardless of age.

The adult-oriented persona isn't as extreme as you might expect

While there is a "Scarlet Night" celebration featuring lots of red lights and sailors donning their best scarlet-colored attire, the atmosphere on board is far from what you'll find in Amsterdam's Red Light District.

The entertainment we experienced fell somewhere between PG-13 and R, though we admittedly headed to bed by 11 p.m., so perhaps offerings leaned more X-rated as the night went on.

There were a couple of shows that I wouldn't want to see with, say, my parents, such as the previously mentioned "Never Sleep Alone." During that event, participants were awarded golden condoms that granted access to a post-show VIP party. However, those adult activities were easy to spot on the agenda, so you could easily skip them if you wanted a more tame cruise experience.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Beyond the evening entertainment, the vibe was similar to what you'd find in Las Vegas . The pools, restaurants, spa, casino and exercise classes all featured plenty of skimpy outfits and adult-oriented jokes and innuendos, though you could avoid anything that was too outside your comfort zone.

Dining options are plentiful (albeit hit or miss)

As far as I'm concerned, cruises are for eating — and Virgin Voyages offers numerous places to dine on Scarlet Lady.

In addition to featuring more than 20 grab-and-go spots and traditional sit-down eateries, there's the large Galley venue with various vendors arranged in a way similar to what you'd find in a food court or buffet.

Given all the options available, there were more places than we could try on our first Virgin Voyages cruise. Still, we sought to sample as much as possible during our four-night sailing.

virgin voyages sea terrace

If you're looking for a traditional sit-down experience, six onboard restaurants accept reservations for dinner: The Wake (which serves steaks and seafood), Razzle Dazzle Restaurant (a contemporary venue with vegetarian and American fare), The Test Kitchen (a laboratory-style eatery), Pink Agave (where gourmet Mexican cuisine is on the menu), Extra Virgin (an Italian-inspired venue) and Gunbae (which specializes in Korean barbecue).

virgin voyages sea terrace

Your cruise price covers dining at all of these spots, plus the quick bite options on the ship. However, some restaurants offer buy-up options labeled as "treat yourself" dishes that cost extra. For example, a half-dozen oysters at The Wake are going to set you back an additional $20, but the steak and clam chowder are 100% included.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Besides the main restaurants, there's the previously mentioned Galley, where you can savor everything from sushi roll bento boxes to 24-hour diner food. It is a hybrid of a grab-and-go and dine-in experience, meaning how you order will vary depending on which station you visit.

Additionally, you'll find casual spots that serve ice cream, pizza, poke bowls and more. You can also order room service; the food is complimentary, but there's a $5 delivery fee.

virgin voyages sea terrace

While I appreciated the array of options at our disposal, I found the quality of the food and service to be hit or miss. Some restaurants I loved so much that I went back a second time; at others, I took a solitary bite of food before deciding to move on.

For example, the tuna poke bowl I excitedly tried at the Sun Club Cafe was patently awful, and the sushi rolls at The Galley were disappointing, reminding me of what I'd find in my Texas grocery store.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Similarly, The Wake was lackluster, to say the least. While some fellow cruisers we met enjoyed the restaurant, it was extremely underwhelming during our visit, serving the worst shrimp and grits I've ever had. Not to mention, the service was slow and seafood options were surprisingly limited for a restaurant that claims to specialize in steak and seafood.

virgin voyages sea terrace

It wasn't all mediocre, though.

Gunbae's Korean fare was not only delicious but served in a setting that was an absolute blast to experience. It really captured how Virgin markets itself by offering staff-led drinking games and communal seating that encourages socializing. We had such a great time there that when we walked into a quiet and sparsely populated restaurant on our last night, we turned around and went back to Gunbae for a repeat experience that was just as memorable as our first visit.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Pink Agave was another standout restaurant. It didn't offer as much of a party vibe as Gunbae, but it still felt lively and served a solid selection of Mexican dishes.

The cabins are decent but could be improved

Unless you splurge on a pricy RockStar suite , you'll be placed in a cabin that looks modern but otherwise seems fairly standard, other than the fancy mood lighting.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Our Sea Terrace cabin was spotless and stayed true to the modern theme featured throughout the ship, but it wasn't the most comfortable spot on the whole.

While we enjoyed the red outdoor hammock that was shockingly comfortable and not merely a cute, Instagram-worthy gimmick, as well as the selection of in-room movies, which ranged from the original "Top Gun" to newer releases like "Elvis," the rest of the cabin left a lot to be desired.

virgin voyages sea terrace

The bathroom was quite small, to the point where it bordered on being a claustrophobic experience.

virgin voyages sea terrace

The bed was also rather hard and uncomfortable for my personal tastes, so much so that by the last night of our trip, I was ready to return to my more inviting setup at home.

Additionally, unlike Disney Cruise Line, where cabin attendants make it a point to get to know you and your preferences, Virgin Voyages lacked the same personalized service. I never interacted with a person in charge of our cabin, as it would be serviced while we were out (after pushing a button that sent the request to the crew) by a person that, to us, remained nameless and faceless.

The private beach club is top-notch

While other ports of call vary based on the sailing, a constant for Scarlet Lady is a stop at its private beach club in the Bahamas.

Situated on the island of Bimini, this spot was, in a word, fabulous.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Although it's not quite a private island like Royal Caribbean's CocoCay and Disney Cruise Line's Castaway Cay, that doesn't really matter. You'll feel like you're in an exclusive setting after taking the open-air tram from the ship's dock to the modern, beautiful beach club.

virgin voyages sea terrace

The club offers a couple of large pools, ample lounge chairs and towels, plenty of bars and a picture-perfect beach. A swim-up bar would have been nice, but that's being picky.

virgin voyages sea terrace

During your visit to the club, any drinks you order are charged to the ship, so bar tab credits you have during your cruise will work here, too. The food, which ranged from snapper steamed in a banana leaf to a salad featuring Bahamian mango and macadamia, is included, though some dishes were better than others. I loved mixing the curry, rice and snapper I ordered all together to create a pretty tasty bowl.

virgin voyages sea terrace

On-island entertainment is available as well, though I can't speak to what happened as the afternoon wore on, as we hit our sun quota by midday. However, rumor has it there was a pool float party that occurred after our departure.

You won't find the usual cruise experience on board

Virgin Voyages does not simply give its amenities and activities quirky names — like "Lick Me Til Ice Cream" for the onboard ice cream shop. The overall experience is a bit different than what you'll come across on traditional cruise lines.

To start, there are no drink packages — and that was a big complaint I heard on the ship from folks who were used to sailing with other lines that offer unlimited drink inclusion options . Instead, Virgin Voyages offers a bar tab that you can load before you sail. Sometimes bar tab credit is also included with the sailing as part of a promotion.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Blessedly, there are no keycards and associated lanyards to keep up with but rather adjustable bracelets that look like friendship bracelets from middle school. Unlike the ones from your childhood, these have built-in technology that opens your cabin door, allows you to charge things to your account and more.

There are also no set dining times, restaurant rotations or dress codes, though you can — and should — make dinner reservations. As a result, you can dine at whichever restaurant you prefer at a time that works for you.

Other than the cabin cleanings, the crew was more noticeable, too. We saw crew members on the basketball courts, eating in The Galley and just generally out and about around the ship even when they didn't appear to be on the clock, which helped create a more relaxed atmosphere.

virgin voyages sea terrace

Additionally, we didn't have to worry about extra tips, taxes or fees. Tips for the crew, spa services and more are factored into your cruise price, so what you see on the menu really is what you can expect to pay.

Another noticeable (and welcome) difference was how laid-back the line was with announcements and disembarking. Outside of a welcome announcement from the captain on the first day, we didn't hear another peep. On the last day, you just had to be off the ship by a respectable 10:45 a.m., so you could still go to a workout class, play some air hockey and have brunch without feeling rushed to depart.

Bottom line

Despite some underwhelming aspects here and there, such as some design choices we didn't love and a very crowded pool area, we had a great time.

virgin voyages sea terrace

The late-night spicy ramen, social atmosphere and fun ports more than made up for any hiccups. For us, it was like a four-day long party without the hangover.

In fact, we had such a great time that before disembarking Scarlet Lady, we put a $300 deposit down on a future Virgin Voyages sailing so we could receive $900 in discounts and credits the next time around.

It's safe to say that overall, the cruise was absolutely worth it — and one we can't wait to do all over again.

If you're lucky enough to be over 18 and under the age of 26 you could sail for free with Virgin Voyages.

But, there's a catch. You must be travelling with your parents.

Young adults can enjoy a free holiday with the cruise line as long as they are accompanied by their parents, guardians or caregivers.

Virgin Voyages is marketing the promotion as 'kids go free'.

While the cruise line is strictly adults only, it's changing its definition of 'kids' to young adults aged 18 to 26.

Virgin Voyages said in a statement: '"If you're old enough to vote, you're old enough to sail" was the thinking that inspired Virgin Voyages' (cheeky) definition of "children".

'As a brand celebrated for its adults-only atmosphere, the company is changing its tune and answering the call of its sailors to bring their (adult) children on board.

'Whether your (not so) little ones are about to graduate, head off to college or be bumped from their current health insurance, there's truly no better way for parents to celebrate with their grown-up kids than aboard Virgin Voyages' award-winning fleet.'

Virgin Voyages will offer activities 'designed for kids of all ages' on board that are 'anything but the average vacation kids club'.

Guests can enjoy making beaded bracelets, playing dodgeball or dancing in the pool during its famous 'Scarlet Night' - a ship-wide soirée where guests are encouraged to dress in red.

There are also 'family-friendly' shoreside activities including wine tasting in Italy, cooking in the Mediterranean or swimming with sharks in Bimini.

Virgin Voyages' website  adds: '[The promotion is] only applicable with a second sailor in the cabin.

'If a third and fourth sailor are added to the cabin, they will pay the full prevailing cabin price.'

And, it only applies to the following cabin types: Central Sea Terrace, Sea Terrace, Limited View Sea Terrace, Sea View and Insider.

The deal is available for a limited time only and must be booked by August 23.
