Florida State College at Jacksonville announces AJ Laguerre Jr. Scholarship established by PGA TOUR and THE PLAYERS

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On Monday, more than 200 students at William M. Raines Senior High School were the first to learn of the AJ Laguerre Jr. Endowed Scholarship, a full scholarship established by the PGA TOUR and THE PLAYERS Championship to honor the memory of the 2023 Raines graduate, who planned to go to FSCJ and major in cybersecurity.

Open to high school graduates seeking enrollment at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) to pursue a career in cybersecurity, IT and related areas, the scholarship commemorates Laguerre's love of video games and streaming, which fueled his passion and interest in technology. Preference will be given to students who reside in Health Zone 1 (32202, 32204, 32206, 32208, 32209 and 32254 zip codes).

“As members of this community, we strive to ensure that the contributions our tournament and the PGA TOUR make are meaningful and have a lasting impact,” said Lee Smith, executive director, THE PLAYERS Championship. “We are honored to play a small part in ensuring AJ’s legacy reflects and supports the dreams of future FSCJ students with similar goals.”

During the scholarship announcement, FSCJ College President John Avendano, Ph.D., posthumously awarded Laguerre with an Honorary Associate in Science degree in Cybersecurity. Along with a custom jersey, the degree was presented to family members in attendance.

“Partnership is what brings us together today. It’s people, and the people in organizations, with ideas and hearts for those who need a little extra support to make their dreams a reality,” said Avendano. “We are proud to partner with the PGA TOUR to honor AJ’s dream and aspirations.”

Prior to the scholarship announcement, a panel, featuring cybersecurity, information technology and industry leaders and alumni, was hosted to inform students of the various IT and STEM-related careers.

“Seeing our graduate honored at his alma mater with the announcement of the AJ Laguerre Jr. Endowed Scholarship is truly heartwarming,” said Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Christopher Bernier. “I am thankful to The PGA TOUR, THE PLAYERS Championship and FSCJ for ensuring that AJ’s legacy will continue to be one of hope in this community.”

Francesco Molinari and Justin Rose named as Playing Captains for 2025 Team Cup

The DP World Tour today confirmed that Major Champions Francesco Molinari and Justin Rose have been named as the Playing Captains for the second edition of the Team Cup, which will take place on the National Course at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort from January 10-12, 2025.

Molinari captained Continental Europe to victory two years ago and will go head-to-head with his Ryder Cup teammate Rose, who assumes the Great Britain & Ireland captaincy for the first time.

The pair will lead respective teams of ten DP World Tour Members in the three-day match play contest, with Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald also presiding over proceedings in the United Arab Emirates as he did in 2023.

In addition to Molinari and Rose, the teams will comprise the leading four available Continental European and GB&I members from the final 2024 Race to Dubai Rankings, with the five remaining players on each side being selected by the respective Captains in consultation with Donald.

Donald, who will lead Europe for the second time at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black next year said: “I’m really pleased that the Team Cup is returning as it provided some invaluable experience for a lot of players last year. I think all of us got a lot out of the week in terms of experiencing the uniqueness of a team environment. It also helped everyone involved to understand, through the Past Ryder Cup Captains who came and spoke to the players during the event, just what it means to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup.

“I am delighted that Francesco and Justin will assume the role of Captains. We saw what Francesco was capable of when he led Continental Europe to a great victory in 2023 and Justin was inspirational both inside and outside the ropes at Marco Simone last year. I’m excited to see them go head-to-head.”

Continental Europe Captain Molinari said: “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to captain Continental Europe again and to try and successfully defend the Team Cup. It was a really special week in 2023 and was great to see players from so many different countries across the Continent working towards one single goal. I have immense respect for Justin, he is a great competitor and going up against him and his team is a challenge I’m really relishing.”

Team GB&I Captain Rose said: “It’ll be strange going up against Fran in a match play competition rather than him being on the same side, but it’s something I am really looking forward to, even though I know it will be tough given Fran’s history not just in this contest but in the Ryder Cup too. But there is so much exciting talent from Great Britain and Ireland on the DP World Tour right now – it will be great to have the chance to try and mould them into a winning team.”

As in 2023, the teams will compete in match play across one session of fourballs on the Friday, two sessions of foursomes on the Saturday and one session of singles on the Sunday, with every player taking part in all four of the sessions. Each match will be worth one point, with the team crossing the 12½ point mark winning the Team Cup.

The Team Cup – formerly known as the Hero Cup – was first played in January 2023, with Continental Europe, led by Molinari, defeating the GB&I team led by Tommy Fleetwood by 14½ -10½. Players who competed in that contest who went on to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup last year were: Nicolai Højgaard and Sepp Straka (Continental Europe) and Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry and Robert MacIntyre (GB&I).

Abu Dhabi Sports Council are returning as an Official Partner of the event, reaffirming their commitment to golf in the region in addition to their support of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

Fans are now able to register for free General Admission tickets for the event, with Premium Experience options also available here . There will be a host of activities for all the family in the Championship Village, with food outlets, picnic areas and live entertainment.

For those seeking an elevated day at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort, the Premium Experience option is also available. Guests can enjoy five-star catering in a relaxed environment, inside the airconditioned clubhouse or on the shaded viewing terrace. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea are provided in addition to a beverage package of hops, grains and soft beverages.

Malgré la maladie qui le confine chez lui, Samaël a pu rentrer à l'école à distance : "Ça se passe vraiment comme une journée normale à l'école"

Quelque 876.000 élèves ont retrouvé ce lundi 26 août 2024 le chemin de l'école en fédération wallonie-bruxelles. et grâce à l'asbl classcontact, samaël, à l'instar de 120 autres enfants malades de longue durée, a pu, lui aussi, retrouver ses camarades de classe. virtuellement..

Ce sont des rires, des cris de joie et des sourires que l'on pouvait observer ce lundi matin sur les visages des élèves de l'école communale de Belgrade (Namur). Et pour cause : après 7 semaines de congé, ces écoliers semblaient tout heureux de reprendre le chemin de l'école, et en particulier de retrouver leurs camarades de classe.

Samaël, lui, a vécu cette rentrée scolaire en distanciel, depuis sa maison. " Il est immunodéprimé , explique Manuela Riga, sa maman. Il n'a donc pas assez de protection, pas assez d'anticorps pour pouvoir fréquenter l'école ."

Pourtant, au moment de faire un premier tour de table dans la classe, Samaël a eu, lui aussi, voix au chapitre. Et ce, grâce au dispositif informatique installé par une ASBL privée, ClassContact.

Maintenir les liens

" Ça lui permet de rester en connexion avec l'école , développe Manuela Riga.  C'est un enfant qui adore l'école et qui adore travailler. Donc, le fait d'être connecté depuis la maison lui permet de maintenir une interaction avec les enfants, le professeur et d'avoir un apprentissage tout à fait normal ."

C'est déjà la deuxième fois que Christophe Hamtiaux, l'instituteur de Samaël, expérimente ce dispositif : " Nous disposons d'un tableau blanc interactif et d'un ordinateur installés par la Ville de Namur, et l'ASBL nous apporte son savoir-faire pour tout ce qui est caméra, liaison, Internet… Tout ceci est mis à notre disposition par l'ASBL pour que la connexion entre l'école et Samaël se fasse dans les meilleures conditions ."

" L'ASBL a été fondée en 2006 par d'anciens employés d'IBM Belgique qui avaient remarqué que rien n'était organisé pour les élèves absents de l'école pour une longue durée en raison de problèmes médicaux , resitue Donatien d'Hoop, l'actuel directeur. Par exemple, lorsqu'un élève est atteint d'une maladie grave, il peut être absent pendant plusieurs mois, l'école étant déresponsabilisée puisque l'élève est sous certificat médical. Les fondateurs ont donc décidé d'utiliser leurs compétences en informatique pour aider ces jeunes ."

Grâce à cette initiative, Samaël, lequel a reçu une greffe de moëlle l'année dernière, peut donc suivre normalement la suite de son cursus.

Adaptations minimes

" On s'organise avec le professeur qui nous donne les feuilles à l'avance, et puis ça se passe vraiment comme une journée normale à l'école , reprend sa maman. Il se connecte tous les jours à 8h30, quand il y a les récrés, il arrête; quand ça reprend, il reprend… "

L'instituteur de Samaël, lui, indique ne pas avoir véritablement dû modifier sa pratique de classe.

"Je vais faire plus attention au fait que je ne sois pas trop rapide, que Samaël ait bien l'information, qu'il n'hésite pas à intervenir. C'est un peu invasif, c'est vrai. L'enseignant pourrait penser qu'il est espionné. Mais c'est la confiance entre l'école, l'enseignant et les parents qui doit être mise en avant ."

Samaël, lui, devrait revenir dans sa classe en présentiel en novembre.

" Sans un tel dispositif, et s'il n'y avait pas eu la possibilité de suivre les cours en permanence et d'avoir les explications du professeur, il y aurait sans doute eu un redoublement d'office ", estime Manuela Riga, qui encourage les autres familles dans une situation similaire à faire appel aux services de l'ASBL ClassContact.

Tout comme Samaël, ce sont en effet quelque 120 élèves qui bénéficient à ce jour de ce dispositif offert par l'ASBL. " Pourtant, environ 1000 élèves en Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles sont confrontés à de longues maladies chaque année et pourraient bénéficier du soutien de ClassContact. Les enjeux sont donc considérables pour garantir que la maladie ne constitue plus un obstacle à l'exercice du droit fondamental à l'éducation ", souligne le directeur de l'ASBL.

Un service gratuit, accessible dès la maternelle

ClassContact accompagne actuellement 120 élèves par an. " Environ 5 % en maternelle, 50 % en primaire en 45 % en secondaire ", détaille Donatien d'Hoop. Et sur l'ensemble du territoire de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.

" Notre aide est entièrement gratuite, que ce soit pour la famille, l'école ou l'hôpital, précise encore le directeur. Il suffit de remplir notre formulaire en ligne sur www.classcontact.be pour inscrire un élève. Notre équipe se charge ensuite de tout : mise en place du matériel, formation des enseignants, suivi personnalisé… Notre objectif est de simplifier la vie des parents, déjà forts éprouvés par la situation, et de soulager les écoles, déjà bien occupées. En quelques clics, l'enfant pourra continuer à apprendre et à garder le contact avec ses camarades, même à distance ".

L'exemple flamand pour inspirer la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles

Si le service offert par ClassContact est entièrement gratuit pour les familles, les écoles ou les hôpitaux, son installation et sa maintenance, elles, engendrent nécessairement un coût pour l'ASBL francophone.

" En moyenne, le coût pour notre ASBL est d'environ 2500 euros par élève et par an, précise Donatien d'Hoop. Nous nous finançons principalement de manière privée, par le biais de petits dons (avec attestation fiscale, NDLR) , de dons d'entreprises, en répondant à des appels à projets de fondations privées ou des appels à projets publics ". De quoi permettre à l'ASBL d'accompagner environ 120 élèves chaque année.

" En comparaison, la Flandre, via l'ASBL Bednet (créée un an après ClassContact, NDLR) , assiste environ 1300 élèves par an (1477 élèves en 2023, selon le dernier rapport d'activité de Bednet, NDLR) , bénéficiant d'un financement pluriannuel de 2,3 millions d'euros (elle a reçu un subside de 2,461 millions € en 2023, soit 87 % de son budget de financement de ses activités, NDLR)", relève Donatien d'Hoop. " De plus, le décret flamand relatif à l'enseignement a été modifié pour instaurer un droit positif à l'enseignement en ligne synchrone pour les élèves absents plus de 21 jours par année scolaire, consécutif ou non. Grâce à ces mesures, toutes les écoles flamandes connaissent Bednet et y font appel en cas de maladie longue durée ", constate encore le directeur francophone.

Et en Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles?

" Avant même les élections, nous avons sollicité les différents partis politiques. Depuis le scrutin, nous avons intensifié nos échanges avec Les Engagés et le MR. Ces deux formations politiques ont montré leur engagement en inscrivant dans leur Déclaration de politique communautaire une volonté claire de soutenir structurellement ces jeunes ", note Donatien d'Hoop. Et de fait. À la page 20 du texte évoqué, on peut lire : " Une attention particulière sera accordée à la scolarité des élèves malades de longue durée, en mobilisant les apports des outils numériques afin d'assurer une continuité pédagogique et de maintenir le lien social avec la classe ".

En contact avec le cabinet de la ministre Glatigny, le directeur de l'ASBL espère ainsi que " ces engagements se concrétiseront rapidement par des mesures concrètes, afin que chaque élève, quelle que soit sa situation de santé, puisse poursuivre son parcours scolaire dans les meilleures conditions possibles ". Et de conclure : " Ces avancées sont encourageantes, mais il reste encore beaucoup à faire pour garantir l'égalité des chances pour tous les élèves ". D'autant qu'il l'assure : " Nous continuerons à mobiliser tous les acteurs concernés pour faire de ce projet une réalité ".
