T he 2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs come to a close this week at the Tour Championship, where the winner will take home $25 million in bonus money.

That's an increase of $7 million from a year ago. In 2019, the first year of the current format, the top prize was $15 million.

The money earned this week is considered bonus money and does not count towards a player's winnings on the PGA Tour's official money list.

This year marks the 18th season of the playoffs. PGA Tour players battled through 38 events to get to the finale. The top 70 in the FedEx Cup points made the 2024 postseason with the top 50 advancing to Week 2 and then just the top 30 reaching East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

Viktor Hovland won the Tour Championship in 2023.

How much money is at stake at the Tour Championship?

The winner of the Tour Championship is declared the FedEx Cup champion and takes home the first-place prize of $25 million in bonus money.

The runner-up gets $12.5 million, third place will earn $7.5 million, all the way down to 30th place, which is good for $550,000. The top 12 finishers will earn seven figures. Here's a closer look:

Bonus money payouts

There is $100 million in bonus money from the entire FedEx Cup Playoffs in 2024.

The PGA Tour will continue to utilize the FedEx Cup Starting Strokes, which was introduced for the first time in 2019. It's a staggered system whereby the golfer in the top position will start the Tour Championship at 10 under.

Starting strokes

This system was established to give players at the top of the points list the reward of a starting advantage in the Tour Championship.

Only two multiple winners

The first 17 seasons of the playoff produced 14 different winners.

Rory McIlroy (2016, 2019, 2022) and Tiger Woods (2007, 2009) are the only golfers to have won it more than once.

The FedExCup playoffs will conclude at the Tour Championship and for the second straight season, Scottie Scheffler will begin the finale with a two-stroke advantage.

Despite finishing co-runner-up at the BMW Championship, Scheffler is No. 1 in the FedExCup standings. With the staggered scoring system in place, he’ll start at East Lake at 10 under par.

BMW Championship winner Viktor Hovland, who closed in an Olympia Fields course-record 61, is second in points and opens the Tour Championship at 8 under.

Scheffler was in the same position a year ago and built a six-stroke lead through 54 holes, before closing in 75 and tying for second, behind champion Rory McIlroy.

The top 30 in FedExCup points qualified for the event. Matt Fitzpatrick was the lone player to jump inside the cut line, thanks to his play in the second playoff event. His tie for second moved him from 40th to 10th, while Chris Kirk dropped from 29th to 32nd.

There is no official purse at East Lake, but there is a $75 million bonus pool, with $18 million going to the winner.

Starting scores are based on where players stand in FedExCup points following the first two playoff events. Here’s how the field will commence the Tour Championship, along with the full bonus payout.

Tour Championship Prize Money

Tour championship field and starting positions.

The PGA Tour season draws to a close with the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings competing at East Lake in Georgia.

As well as a far smaller field than other events on the PGA Tour, the Tour Championship also has a unique scoring system based on each player's FedEx Cup standings before the tournament.

Sitting at the top of the list is World No.1 Scottie Scheffler . Thanks to that achievement, he starts with a two-shot advantage over his nearest competitor on 10-under.

The player closest to him is Viktor Hovland, thanks largely to his win in second FedEx Cup Playoff tournament, the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields. The Norwegian claimed victory in some style, too. In the final round, he carded a 61, the lowest in FedEx Cup Playoff history. Meanwhile, it was also the lowest of his career and a course record.

Given he's heading into this week's tournament on the back of such an impressive performance, it's unlikely Scheffler will feel comfortable at the top despite his two-shot head start.

Viktor Hovland celebrates with his caddie after the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields

Viktor Hovland begins two shots off the lead

One shot behind Hovland is Rory McIlroy , who starts at seven under. The 34-year-old is aiming for a record fourth FedEx Cup title as he attempts to replicate his win at East Lake last season, when he edged out Sungae Im and Scheffler in a thrilling final round . Given McIlroy's form of late, which has included top-10 finishes in each of his last nine starts, few would bet against him winning.

While each of the top three have good reason to believe they can lift the trophy on Sunday evening, there are several other realistic candidates. One is Masters champion Jon Rahm , who starts four shots off the lead. The Spaniard began 2023 in scintillating form, and if he can return to his best this week, he'll be in with an excellent chance of securing his first FedEx Cup title.

Lucas Glover, at five under, will also be hoping to continue a hot streak that has brought two wins in the last month, including the opening FedEx Cup PlayOff tournament, the FedEx St. Jude Championship . There is added incentive for the American to perform well as he still has a chance of persuading Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson he is worthy of a wildcard for the match.

Beyond those players, others looking to eat into Scheffler's lead will be 2021 FedEx Cup winner Patrick Cantlay , who starts at four under, along with Max Homa , who ranks seventh in the world, Open champion Brian Harman . US Open winner Wyndham Clark and the player who won the Major in 2022, Matt Fitzpatrick, also begin six off the lead.

Other big names in the field include Tommy Fleetwood , Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele , who each begin at three under, while 2015 FedEx Cup winner Jordan Spieth begins 10 off the lead.

The tournament boasts a purse of $75m, with the winner taking home a huge $18m, while the runner-up will win $6.5m.

Below is the prize money, field and starting positions for the Tour Championship at East Lake.

  • -10 Scottie Scheffler

Adam Scott takes home a big check this week, but the biggest payout comes next week.

Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Keegan Bradley and Adam Scott were both playing for their playoff lives this week.

Bradley was the last man in the field for this week’s BMW Championship at 50th in the FedEx Cup standings while Scott was No. 41 in the rankings with only the Top 30 advancing to East Lake for next week’s Tour Championship. But both players summoned their best games in Colorado to punch their tickets, with Bradley winning to vault to fourth in the standings, and Scott finishing T2 to move to 14th.

While points will be the big takeaway for position next week at East Lake, you’ll hear an awful lot about money over the next couple weeks.

In addition to each of the two initial Playoff events carrying $20 million purses, making it to the top 30 and the Tour Championship field means access to the FedEx Cup bonus pool . The Tour Championship has no separate purse, but the winner will get $25 million for himself.

Even 10th place will get $1.75 million. That’s more than the third-place finisher this week.

But, players still needed to avoid being one of the 20 that got sent home from the Playoffs this week.

With that, here is the complete payout breakdown for this week’s BMW Championship , played at Castle Pines Golf Club. The total purse is $20 million.

How much every player made at the 2024 BMW Championship

TOUR Championship payout distribution 2023: Prize money, purse

By cody williams | aug 27, 2023.

TOUR Championship - Final Round

The TOUR Championship got underway at East Lake Golf Club on Thursday to begin the final event of the PGA Tour season and the FedEx Cup Playoffs with Scottie Scheffler sitting atop the leaderboard at 10-under thanks to the starting strokes. By the end of the first round, though, he had plenty of competition and had lost his No. 1 spot already.

Since then, last week's BMW Championship winner, Viktor Hovland got rolling and surged to the top of the leaderboard from the No. 2 spot, tied with Collin Morikawa after the first two rounds. But it was Hovland who persisted and, heading into Sunday's final round with everyone competing for their TOUR Championship payout from the enormous $75 million purse on the line, Hovland was six strokes clear of Xander Schauffele in second place and eight strokes clear of the rest of the field.

With a $75 million purse and only 30 players in the field, you can imagine the type of prize money that these players were playing for. But let's take a look at the TOUR Championship payout distribution by finishing position, starting with the truly eye-popping winner's share.

TOUR Championship payout distribution: Winner's prize money in 2023

The winner of the TOUR Championship for the second consecutive year will receive a monstrous $18 million in prize money for their efforts at East Lake. This massive number is obviously for winning the tournament at East Lake but, most importantly, the FedEx Cup as well. With the staggered start and starting strokes to begin the week in Atlanta, these players will have made sure to earn everything -- but especially the winner.

TOUR Championship payout distribution by finishing position

  • $18 million
  • $6.5 million
  • $2.5 million
  • $1.5 million
  • $1.25 million

Suffice it say, making it to East Lake and just getting any part of the TOUR Championship is an extremely popular endeavor. While everyone would like to have the $18 million that the winner receives, finishing in last and still getting a half-million payday doesn't seem too bad, does it?

After all, that's a Top 3 finish in a non-designated event in the regular season.

There's a reason that this is the finale of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup Playoffs, though. These players have earned their way into the field and the massive amount of prize money that comes their way for doing so.

Prize money, full field, starting strokes format for 2024 Tour Championship at East Lake

east lake golf club tour championship prize money

The 2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs come to a close this week at the Tour Championship, where the winner will take home $25 million in bonus money.

That’s an increase of $7 million from a year ago. In 2019, the first year of the current format, the top prize was $15 million.

The money earned this week is considered bonus money and does not count towards a player’s winnings on the PGA Tour’s official money list.

Here’s a closer look:

Bonus money payouts

There is $100 million in bonus money from the entire FedEx Cup Playoffs in 2024.

The PGA Tour will continue to utilize the FedEx Cup Starting Strokes, which was introduced for the first time in 2019. It’s a staggered system whereby the golfer in the top position will start the Tour Championship at 10 under.

Keegan Bradley goes from last man in to BMW Championship winner and on to East Lake

Keegan Bradley has gone from the last man in the BMW Championship to the winner

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — The BMW Championship was one tournament Keegan Bradley never thought he could win, only because he didn’t think he would be playing.

Bradley was a bundle of nerves one week ago Sunday as he sat in a hotel room in Tennessee with his bags packed and his season seemingly over. And then he squeezed into the 50th spot in FedEx Cup in the final hour, the last man in Castle Pines for the next playoff event.

From biting his nails in Memphis to holding a trophy in Denver. What a week.

“I can’t even wrap my head around it,” Bradley said after an even-par 72 gave him a one-shot victory over Adam Scott, Sam Burns and Ludvig Aberg.

He doesn’t have much time to let his seventh career PGA Tour victory sink in. This created possibilities Bradley never imagined a week ago.

He heads to Atlanta for the Tour Championship at East Lake, where Bradley — who went from No. 50 to No. 4 in the standings — will start four shots behind Scottie Scheffler at East Lake with a reasonable chance at winning the FedEx Cup and its $25 million prize.

And that’s not the only cup in play.

Bradley became the first Ryder Cup captain — he was appointed U.S. skipper just over six weeks ago — to win a PGA Tour event in nine years. He is an assistant captain for the Presidents Cup next month in Montreal.

The BMW title moved him to No. 10 in the Presidents Cup standings. Only the top six automatically qualified Sunday, but Bradley is certain to be under serious consideration when Jim Furyk makes his six captain’s picks after the Tour Championship.

“I don’t know where that’s going to go, but I’m happy to play whatever role they want me to play,” the 38-year-old Bradley said. “I hope I didn’t throw a huge wrench in everybody’s plans, but I’m proud to be in consideration.”

Consideration came from winning, and this a rock-solid performance in the mile-high air and in wind that left several players guessing how far the golf ball was flying.

Bradley had some help from the Scott, who was tied for the lead until starting the back nine with three soft bogeys, all with a wedge in his hand. He missed par putts of 7 feet, 6 feet and 8 feet to fall three shots behind. But it was the approach shots that hurt him.

“Ten, 11, 12 kind of blew it for me there,” Scott said after his 72. “I was in position with wedges on every hole and made three bogeys. That’s almost unthinkable, really.”

Burns had a Sunday-best 65, nearly holing a bunker shot on the 18th. Aberg was in position to close the gap until posing over a 6-iron into the par-5 14th right up until it splashed down, leading to a bogey from which he couldn’t quite recover. He closed with a 71.

Bradley, who finished at 12-under 276, effectively sealed it with a 5-iron from 227 yards in which he took dead aim behind two bunkers to a back left pin and watched it settle on the firm green 16 feet away, the closest anyone was all day.

“As pure a golf shot as I’ve ever hit,” Bradley said.

He two-putted for birdie and a two-shot lead, allowing him a cushion and time to soak up chants of “U-S-A! U-S-A!” from thousands who encircled the 18th green and paid tribute to the Ryder Cup captain for the 2025 matches. Bradley got a lot of those cheers this week.

Scott’s last chance really ended on the 15th. Bradley was in deep trouble in a back bunker, forcing him to play some 25 feet away from the pin. Scott was in the fairway, 101 yards from the pin, and his wedge sailed the green into deep rough. They wound up with matching bogeys.

The consolation for Scott was moving into the top 30 who qualify for East Lake.

Justin Thomas somehow made it to East Lake for the Tour Championship, even though he was already home in Florida in the same nail-biting spot as Bradley was a week ago.

Thomas needed plenty of help to get the 30th spot, and it came from former British Open champion Brian Harman and Alex Noren. Harman needed a par on the last hole to stay in the top 30 and made double bogey.

Noren, who has never made it to East Lake, was poised to finish in the top 30 when he holed a 25-foot par putt on the 13th hole and made birdie on the 14th. But he finished with three straight bogeys, the most damaging on the par-5 17th, the easiest hole at Castle Pines. He had to lay up from a drive in the rough and hit wedge into a bunker. He shot 75.

Bradley earned $4 million for his second title in the BMW Championship, also winning at Aronimink in 2018 when he was the No. 52 seed in what was then a 70-man field.

Bradley and Scott joined Tommy Fleetwood (69) and Chris Kirk (69) who moved into the top 30 to qualifying for the Tour Championship. They bumped out Harman, Jason Day, Davis Thompson and Denny McCarthy.

Here's the final FedEx Cup prize money payout for each golfer at the 2020 Tour Championship

tour-championship-east-lake-fedex-cup-trophy.jpg

The winner of the FedEx Cup at East Lake earns $15 million.

Keyur Khamar/PGA Tour

Technically speaking, there was no tournament prize money payout at this week’s Tour Championship. Rather, the financial rewards decided after four rounds at East Lake Golf Club come from the bonus pool given to players for their finish in the final season-long FedEx Cup standings. It’s why no player’s career PGA Tour earnings will increase as a result of anything that went on this week in Atlanta.

That said, we’re really talking semantics. With the format change initiated last year, which aligns the finish at the Tour Championship to the finish in the final FedEx Cup standings, that bonus money amounts to a tournament purse. And that purse was rather large.

With his three-shot victory on Monday in Atlanta, Dustin Johnson was the big winner in the season-long FedEx Cup race, earning $15 million after closing with a two-under 68. Johnson had won $2.7 million the past two weeks in prize money with his win and runner-up showing at The Northern Trust and BMW Championship. Adding up all that loot, Johnson now has earned $40.44 million in his career in the FedEx Cup alone, which trails only Rory McIlroy for the most of an tour pro since the Playoffs began 14 years ago.

The grand finale of the 2024 PGA Tour season has arrived as the top 30 players in the season-long points race have made their way to Atlanta for the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler holds the top spot in the FedEx Cup Standings, meaning he’ll begin his first round at 10 under, two shots ahead of Xander Schauffele (No. 2 in the FEC). Scheffler, who tied for 33rd in the 50-man field at last week’s BMW Championship, is +110 to win.

Defending FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland is 17th in the points standings, meaning he’ll begin the event at 2 under, eight shots back of Scheffler.

This week’s winner will take home $25 million of the $100 million FedEx Cup bonus pool.

2024 BMW Championship

The only three-time FedEx Cup champion will begin the week six shots back of Scheffler, but don’t let that get to you. When he won here in 2022, he started his week with a triple bogey on the first hole but came all the way back to claim the title.

Coming off a T-11 performance at the BMW Championship, McIlroy provides decent value at this number.

Ludvig Aberg (20/1)

The Tour Championship is one of the weirdest events on the schedule to bet thanks to the staggered start. The key is finding value, and Ludvig Aberg at 20/1 feels like a great number.

The Swede was one of the runner-ups to Keegan Bradley at Castle Pines and his game should fit East Lake nicely, especially his prowess off the tee.

Patrick Cantlay (35/1)

2024 BMW Championship

The 2021 FedEx Cup champion will start the week at 4 under, six shots back of Scheffler.

Cantlay tied for 13th at the BMW Championship a week after tying for 12th at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Sam Burns (40/1)

Burns used a 7-under final round at the BMW Championship to finish in a tie for second. He’s one of those players you roll with when he starts to get hot.

I expect Burns to make a lot of putts on the Bermuda greens this week, and he’ll need them starting at 4 under, six back.

east lake golf club tour championship prize money

The 2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs come to a close this week at the Tour Championship, where the winner will take home $25 million in bonus money.

That’s an increase of $7 million from a year ago. In 2019, the first year of the current format, the top prize was $15 million.

The money earned this week is considered bonus money and does not count towards a player’s winnings on the PGA Tour’s official money list.
