Viaggiare Sicuri
The www.viaggiaresicuri.it site, published by the Foreign Ministry’s Crisis Unit in collaboration with ACI, provides the latest information on all the countries of the world.
Check the page for the country you plan to visit for any special advice notices and an up-date on the overall situation and any security or weather-related problems, epidemics, etc.
Country sheets
The Viaggiare Sicuri site also includes country sheets with more detailed up-dates: security and health conditions, information for business travellers, transport conditions and useful addresses.
Check again just before you leave
Remember to check www.viaggiaresicuri.it again just before you leave because the security situation can change rapidly. The laws and regulations in force in foreign countries can change too. We up-date all of this information constantly.
Crisis Unit phone-line
You can also contact the Crisis Unit’s phone-line for information. The service is available every day (with recorded messages during the night).
From Italy: 06-491115
From abroad +39-06-491115
Dove siamo nel mondo (Where we are in the world)
Before leaving, you can also register with the www.dovesiamonelmondo.it site by entering your name, your itinerary and your mobile phone number (your right to privacy is protected – see below). The Crisis Unit can then use this information in crisis situations to estimate the number of Italians present in the region affected, identify them and plan any emergency assistance that may be needed.
All the information you enter on the www.dovesiamonelmondo.it site is deleted automatically two days after the return date you provided. We only use the information in emergencies to help the Crisis Unit organise any emergency measures that may be needed.
Registering by text (SMS)
You can also register using your mobile phone. Just send a text (SMS) containing a question mark – ? – or the word AIUTO to this number: 320 2043424 . Alternatively, you can phone 011-2219018 and follow the instructions.
Get insurance before leaving!
We strongly recommend that you obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) when travelling in the countries of the European Union. For trips outside the EU, you should organise health insurance. The insurance should be sufficient to cover not only medical expenses at hospitals and other healthcare facilities in the country you are visiting, but also any air transfer you may need. This could be to another country or to return home – which can mean, in the most serious cases, transfer by air-ambulance.
Package tours – check the conditions!
If you’re going on a package tour, we suggest that you carefully check the terms of the insurance cover included in your travel package. If the cover provided is too low and does not provide sufficient guarantees, we advise you to take out additional private health insurance.
Loans with promissory note
In recent years we have noted an increase in the cases of Italian nationals who find themselves in financial difficulty for health/medical reasons while abroad. Diplomatic/Consular missions provide any necessary assistance. But they cannot offer direct financial assistance to individuals. Only in the most serious and urgent cases can they grant loans to Italian nationals not residing in their consular district who become indigent. The individuals concerned must sign a promissory note pledging to repay the loan once they return to Italy.
“Se parto per…” guide to healthcare assistance abroad
For more general information on access to healthcare abroad, we suggest visiting the Ministry of Health website and its “Se Parto Per…” service . This will tell you, for each country of the world, whether or not, as an Italian national, you are entitled to healthcare.
Italy ’s diplomatic missions abroad
Our diplomatic missions abroad have a the task of protecting Italian interests in the countries they are responsible for. They offer a range of services.
They provide help for visiting Italian nationals in cases involving, for example, death, accidents, serious illness, arrest or imprisonment, or violent attacks. They also provide assistance in crisis situations (natural disasters, civil unrest, armed conflict, etc). And they can issue emergency travel documents if your passport is lost or stolen.
Here is the list of the main services provided by our consulates . Each service has its own section.
What to do if the country you’re visiting has no Italian diplomatic mission
If you’re travelling in a country where there is no Italian diplomatic mission, you can ask for consular help and protection from the embassy or consulate of another European Union member state. You can find more information in this section of the European Commission website http://ec.europa.eu/consularprotection/index.action
All of Italy’s diplomatic missions worldwide are listed here .
Remember that you can express your opinion of the service you obtained from the embassy or consulate you visited. Each of our missions abroad has a special public register available for this purpose. For more information, contact the Office for Relations with the P ublic .

How often is the data on this page updated.
We check for travel restriction information from government authorities daily, and update the page any time we get new information. The following information regarding travel restrictions for each country is correct to the best of our knowledge at the time of publication.
How many countries are closed to visitors?
As of Jul 8, 2 countries have completely restricted entry to non-citizens and 5 are open but require quarantine and/or a negative COVID test.
Where can I travel without COVID restrictions?
Currently you can travel from the United States to 197 countries without restrictions. Please check our map to learn more.
Are there any other types of travel restrictions besides COVID-19 tests and quarantines?
These are the two main types of restrictions or requirements needed to travel into another country. However, the COVID-19 testing options are continually widening as new methods are developed. Different countries may accept results from different or multiple test types, so be sure to check the individual country's specific requirements.
What should I do if I get COVID-19 while in another country?
If you get COVID-19 while in another country, follow the local authority's recommendations. These may include hospitalization, self-isolating and testing in that country. Be sure to contact your travel insurance company and travel provider as well and inform them of your situation.
What should I do if the borders of the country I am visiting close?
Depending on your home country, you may need to change your departure date and return home as soon as possible. If that's the case, contact your travel provider to find the earliest departure.

I'm a travel planner. These 5 US destinations are my top recommendations right now.
- I'm a travel planner , and there are so many US destinations my clients are loving right now.
- Milkwakee is one of my favorite spots in the Midwest , and Newport is a great East Coast trip.
- Out West, there's the stunning Sedona, and Savannah is an underrated Southern town .
As a travel planner, I book my fair share of national-park stays and Disney vacations , but my clients have also been loving some less advertised US destinations.
If you're looking for a more under-the-radar spot for a family trip or romantic getaway, the States has plenty of low-key cities to choose from.
Here are some of my favorites right now.
Milwaukee is a Midwest gem.
The Wisconsin city is located on Lake Michigan's western shore , less than two hours from Chicago.
For outdoorsy types, you can hit up Bradford Beach or hike and bike at Lakeshore State Park. If you like beer, tour some local breweries — Urban Harvest, Miller Brewing Company, Milwaukee Brewing Co. — and taste their offerings.
Baseball fans can even spend a day tailgating and catch a Brewers game at American Family Field .
Milwaukee has an expansive art museum and a spectacular zoo. The greenhouses at Mitchell Park Domes also showcase beautiful flowers and plants.
Head west to experience the glorious Sedona.
Located about two hours from Phoenix, Sedona is a nature-lover's paradise.
The area's gorgeous red-colored rocks offer countless hiking opportunities , including braving Bell Rock butte. For more active adventures, there are great places to kayak and mountain bike, or you can head to one of the supernatural vortexes (energy hot spots) Sedona is known for.
The natural water slide at Slide Rock State Park is a unique Arizona attraction, and Oak Creek is a gorgeous place to swim . If you're really brave, you can book a Pink Jeep Tour to see more of the nearby jaw-dropping sights while basically hanging off the cliffs.
The Chapel of the Holy Cross is always at the top of my list, followed by an Old West chuckwagon dinner at Blazin' M Ranch. Downtown Sedona also has a plethora of retail and restaurant options, including the famous Cowboy Club.
San Juan is a tropical destination that doesn't require a passport.
San Juan is a great mix of beach fun and historical sightseeing. Plus, since Puerto Rico is a US territory, US citizens don't need a passport to visit.
Visiting Old San Juan feels like taking a trip back in time. I suggest booking a tour that takes you to Capilla del Cristo, Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery, and the San Juan Cathedral.
Stay at one of the premier beach spots, like Hilton's El Conquistador Resort. And if you're looking for a thrill, book a snorkeling excursion at Icacos Island, hike through rainforests to search for waterfalls, or find a spot to go ziplining.
My favorite experience, which cannot be missed, is kayaking to Laguna Grande at night to see spectacular bioluminescent water.
Savannah has endless opportunities for fun, food, and relaxation.
The best time to visit Savannah, Georgia , is in the spring or fall when the weather is milder.
Take some time to stroll the shops of River Street or hop on one of the city's famous ghost tours — Savannah is considered one of the most haunted cities in America . One of my favorite ways to see the city is by riverboat cruise, and if you have time, take a day trip to the lovely Tybee Island.
History and architecture buffs should also explore the Olde Pink House, Forsyth Park, and the gorgeous homes on Jones Street.
Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room, which serves up southern delicacies, is the best place to grab lunch. Then, you can stroll the riverfront to grab a treat or drink.
Newport is an East Coast delight.
Newport, Rhode Island , is a mix of natural beauty, history, and stunning architecture — b e sure to visit some of the town's historic mansions.
I highly recommend renting a car and driving down the gorgeous Ocean Drive coastal road. But the city also offers Trolley Tours if you want to stick to the inland sights.
You can also take in the views from the 3.5-mile Newport Cliff Walk or book a thrilling rail-bike tour.
The town has many great restaurants, including The Mooring and Bar 'Cino. But if you can't choose, just book a food tour. There are also a number of nearby wineries and breweries, including Newport Vineyard and Greenvale, to check out.

Harris to embark on a seven-state campaign blitz with her VP pick
Vice President Kamala Harris will set out this week on a swing-state campaign blitz, giving her a far heavier travel schedule than her opponent, former President Donald Trump.
It will be a critical week for Harris, who is rushing to introduce herself to voters with just three months until Election Day. It will also be the first time she will appear with her yet-to-be-announced running mate.
Starting Tuesday, Harris will campaign across seven swing states over five days, one of the heaviest weeks of campaign-related travel in the general election.
Her team has vetted six contenders to be her running mate: Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
Walz, Shapiro and Kelly each met separately with Harris on Sunday, according to a source familiar with the meetings.
Harris is set to appear alongside her running mate for the first time Tuesday in Philadelphia , where the pair will kick off the cross-country tour.
Her travel swing is a stark contrast to the pace of Trump and President Joe Biden. Trump has delivered remarks in 10 states since the June 27 debate, while Biden traveled to campaign stops in eight states during the final 24 days of his candidacy. Harris’ travel this week will take her to seven states in less than a fourth of the time.
Harris will visit five states that she and Biden flipped blue in 2020: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia and Arizona. She will also make stops in North Carolina, which Biden lost by a slim margin, and Nevada, where Democrats won narrowly.
The trip highlights the generational gap between Harris compared with Biden and Trump, Democratic allies said.
Biden’s candidacy was consistently plagued by voter concerns about his age, and his final weeks as the presumptive nominee were punctuated by a stream of congressional Democrats urging him to pass the torch to a new generation.
“Age really does matter” when it comes to a candidate’s ability to commit to long campaign trips, said Amanda Renteria, who was the national political director for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
Harris, 59, is a generation younger than Trump, 78, and Biden, 81.
In 2020, Biden was the oldest presidential winner in history. If elected, Trump would be the oldest sitting president by the end of his term.
“It is amazing what candidates can do when they’re traveling around, and you don’t know what time it is, and you don’t know what day it is, but everyone’s in it,” she said. “And you can only sustain that for so long. And when you’re at the age of Trump, I don’t know how you keep up with that.”
Trump is scheduled this week to hold a rally Friday and deliver remarks at a dinner in Montana, a state he won in 2020 with 56.9% of the vote. He is also scheduled to hold a fundraiser Saturday in Colorado, which Biden won by a similar margin in 2020. Neither state is considered to be a swing state.
Reached for comment, Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung pointed to the overall difference in the number of Trump and Harris campaign trips.
"In this cycle, President Trump has by far visited more battleground states, held more rallies, held more fundraisers, done more interviews and engaged with local reporters," Cheung said of Trump, who launched his campaign more than a year and a half before Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee.
"Kamala Harris can’t even give a simple media interview since she was anointed the Democrat nominee," he continued. Harris has not held a sit-down media interview since Biden dropped out of the race on July 21, though she has answered journalists' questions in media gaggles.
In the days after Biden's widely panned June debate in Georgia, his campaign was in damage control mode. Biden spoke at a North Carolina rally and traveled to fundraisers in New York, New Jersey and Virginia before he held a rally in Wisconsin.
His next campaign trips were to Pennsylvania, Michigan and Nevada, the last of which was cut short when he contracted Covid. Days later, he dropped out of the race.
Democratic National Committee spokesperson Abhi Rahman said that if Biden had stayed in the race, "I'm sure that there would have been blitzes like this, as well."
But now "there's definitely a lot of desire to make sure that the vice president is defining herself and her VP before Republicans get a chance to," Rahman said. "So the timing of this definitely goes with that."
When Biden was the presumptive nominee, the Trump campaign aimed many of its attacks at his cognitive ability, leaning into voters' concerns about his age. But with Harris' being a generation younger than Trump, Republicans have had to pivot their approach.
"I think she's making a point of her relative youth and vitality," said Bill Galston, a Brookings Institution fellow and official in President Bill Clinton's administration. "It's a point that she doesn't have to talk about because she's just showing it."
Harris' campaign swing is also consistent with how candidates typically pick up the pace as the election draws closer, said Aleigha Cavalier, a Democratic strategist at the strategy and marketing agency Precision Strategies. But she said Harris' travel pace compared to Trump's and Biden's is "a real advantage."
"I think the fact that she's willing and able to do this many events in a small amount of time is something that can make a real difference, especially when we're less than a hundred days out" from the election, Cavalier said.
Traveling for campaign events can create more opportunities for local media coverage, accelerate fundraising and identify potential future volunteers, said Eric Jaye, a Democratic consultant at Storefront Political Media, a campaign consulting firm. But most important, candidates are activating thousands of "micro-influencers" at rallies, he said.
"They're all holding up their phones, and they're all publishers," he said, adding that when rallygoers post pictures of themselves with a candidate, "that will go out to their networks, which is an endorsement for their networks."
"If you can get 10,000 people to share that they trust Kamala Harris, that has an impact as a form of media and communication in and of itself," Jaye said. "So essentially these are conventions of micro-influencers."
Already, the Harris campaign has touted a groundswell of volunteer support, noting in a memo released Saturday that over the previous 12 days, volunteers had placed 2.3 million phone calls and knocked on 172,000 doors.
The seven-state tour “shows that she has a ton of energy,” Renteria said. “It shows that her campaign is ready to go and is thinking through things and able to execute well. So it’s super exciting.”

Justice Thomas Failed to Reveal More Private Flights, Senator Says
Senator Ron Wyden sent a letter to the wealthy conservative donor Harlan Crow’s lawyer after records showed undisclosed flights between Hawaii and New Zealand with the Supreme Court justice in 2010.
- Share full article
By Abbie VanSickle
Justice Clarence Thomas failed to publicly disclose additional private travel provided by the wealthy conservative donor Harlan Crow, a top Democratic senator said in a letter on Monday.
Customs and Border Protection records revealed that the justice and his wife, Virginia Thomas, took a round trip between Hawaii and New Zealand in November 2010 on Mr. Crow’s private jet, according to the letter. Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, writing to Mr. Crow’s lawyer, demanded that he supply more information about the financial relationship between the two men.
The letter, part of an inquiry that Mr. Wyden, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, has opened into Mr. Crow and the justice, comes as top Democrats have urged major changes to the Supreme Court, including an enforceable code of conduct.
Mr. Wyden said the latest revelation had only increased his misgivings about the relationship between the justice and Mr. Crow, a real estate magnate. “I am deeply concerned that Mr. Crow may have been showering a public official with extravagant gifts, then writing off those gifts to lower his tax bill,” Mr. Wyden wrote.
Read the Letter to Harlan Crow
Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, wrote a letter to Harlan Crow asking for details about private travel with Justice Clarence Thomas.
Justice Thomas did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.
A spokesman for Mr. Crow, Michael Zona, said that his lawyers had “already addressed Senator Wyden’s inquiries, which have no legal basis and are only intended to harass a private citizen.” It accused Mr. Wyden of a politically motivated effort to undermine the Supreme Court.
The statement added that Mr. Crow had “always followed applicable tax law.”
“We consider this matter settled and refer Senator Wyden to our previous correspondence,” the statement read.
Justice Thomas has previously said that he did not believe he needed to disclose gifts of personal hospitality from friends who did not have cases before the Supreme Court.
By law, justices are required to fill out a financial disclosure form each year, including, among other things, outside sources of income and gifts. But Justice Thomas’s form for 2010 does not list any flights on Mr. Crow’s jet.
Mr. Wyden singled out the discrepancy in his letter, noting that the justice had revised past records to reveal travel provided by Mr. Crow. “To date, Justice Thomas has never disclosed this private jet travel on any financial disclosure forms, even though Justice Thomas has amended disclosures to reflect other international travel on Mr. Crow’s private jet,” he wrote.
In a 2023 article , ProPublica noted that the justice had sailed aboard Mr. Crow’s yacht, the Michaela Rose, in New Zealand, about a decade ago. Justice Thomas, in a show of gratitude, gave a crew member a signed copy of his memoir.
It was not immediately clear whether the 2010 flight disclosed by Mr. Wyden was part of the same trip, or how Justice Thomas and his wife traveled to and from Hawaii.
Mr. Wyden also cited reports that the justice had accompanied Mr. Crow to Greece, Russia and the Baltics. None of these trips are noted on the justice’s financial disclosure forms.
In his letter, Mr. Wyden said that determining “the means and scale of Mr. Crow’s undisclosed largess to Justice Thomas” would be critical to informing legislation that the committee was drafting.
Revelations that some justices had failed to disclose luxury gifts and travel from wealthy benefactors have spurred Democratic lawmakers, and in recent weeks, President Biden himself, to push for toughening the ethics code, among other proposals, at the Supreme Court. Such efforts face long odds in a divided Congress.
A White House spokesman said that the news of the undisclosed travel reinforced President Biden’s calls for an enforceable code of conduct.
“The most powerful court in the United States shouldn’t be subject to the lowest ethical standards, and conflicts of interest on the Supreme Court cannot go unchecked,” said the spokesman, Andrew Bates.
Mr. Wyden’s letter provided a glimpse into the congressional investigation of the travels and gifts from Mr. Crow to Justice Thomas.
Mr. Wyden accused Mr. Crow of failing to hand over comprehensive information about his travels with the justice, saying he would give Mr. Crow “one final opportunity to address the tax treatment of yacht and jet trips involving Justice Thomas.”
Although Justice Thomas had claimed the travels were “personal hospitality” and therefore exempt from public disclosure requirements, Mr. Wyden wrote, legislators wanted proof that Mr. Crow had not claimed any tax deductions as business expenses for hosting the justice on his yacht and private jet.
The Senate committee has not yet sought Mr. Crow’s tax records from the Internal Revenue Service and hopes that Mr. Crow will voluntarily comply with the request to turn over the information, said Ryan J. Carey, a spokesman for the Finance Committee chairman.
Mr. Carey said that exercising the committee’s power to seek tax records is “a long process” and that if Mr. Crow’s “tax treatment of the yacht is legitimate, he should be willing to say so.”
Other Democratic members of Congress have also sought to hold Supreme Court justices accountable.
In June, a separate congressional investigation into Justice Thomas revealed three additional trips aboard Mr. Crow’s private jet that he had not included on his financial disclosure forms: one to a city in Montana, near Glacier National Park, in 2017; one to his hometown, Savannah, Ga., in March 2019; and one to Northern California in 2021.
In July, shortly after the Supreme Court granted substantial immunity to presidents, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, introduced articles of impeachment against Justices Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr. She accused them of failing to disclose their travels with benefactors and contended that they should have recused themselves in cases that involved efforts by Donald J. Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 election. (Mrs. Thomas was actively involved in that bid, and flags used to support the “Stop the Steal” movement have been spotted outside the Alitos’ homes.)
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s move, broadly considered a political maneuver, has no realistic chance of advancing in Congress.
Under mounting pressure, the justices issued an ethics code last fall, the first in the court’s history. But many experts quickly pointed out its flaws, particularly given the lack of an enforcement mechanism. In a recent speech, Justice Elena Kagan acknowledged those shortcomings and suggested that the chief justice could appoint a panel of respected judges to enforce the ethics rules.

Daniela Joseph said as much as she loves to travel, a damaged wheelchair is making her second-guess how much she flies.
She was flying from her home in Virginia to Frankfurt, Germany, via Lisbon on TAP Air Portugal in April, and when she arrived for her connection, she said her wheelchair came back damaged.
“The back was completely bent, the tire can’t lock in the chair right anymore,” she told USA TODAY. “The brakes are broken, meaning I can’t stop my chair from rolling. The seat is ripped.”
For Joseph, the situation was complicated by the fact that she’s splitting her time between Germany and the U.S., and that her wheelchair was delivered to her in the states.
“No German dealer wants to work with an American-issued chair,” she said. “When it comes to an estimate, they can’t really give an estimate because they don’t know the prices that are charged in the United States.”
Travelers who rely on mobility devices can face extra challenges if they arrive on a trip abroad to find those devices damaged .
"You’re such at the mercy of what happens to your wheelchair,” Joy Burns, alliances and organization coordinator at Wheel the World told USA TODAY.
Wheel the World is a tour and travel booking site that caters to travelers with accessibility needs.
Burns acknowledged that damaged mobility devices can ruin even the most carefully planned vacation, but she said there are some basic things disabled travelers can do to try to minimize the chance of damage, or to salvage a trip if damage occurs.
1. Plan ahead
Burns said some pre-trip planning can go a long way to making for smooth travels.
She recommends sticking to U.S.-based airlines, even for international trips, because if damage occurs, it’s often easier to deal with American companies when travelers return, rather than trying to keep on top of a carrier with offices abroad. Plus, Burns said, the regulations and expectations of airlines in the U.S. are fairly clear-cut, even if they’re not always followed perfectly.
She also said it’s important to let your airline know about your accessibility needs in advance.
“Make sure you call ahead to the airline,” Burns said. “There are some flights that can’t fit a power chair, the cargo space isn’t big enough. They need to have enough advanced notice.”
Burns added that booking with a specialty company like Wheel the World can help ensure a traveler’s itinerary is more accessible overall, too.
Airline wheelchair damage: Here's how 30+ flyers were affected
2. Know your rights
If something does go wrong, it’s important to report it quickly and know what airlines are expected to do.
Department of Transportation regulations and the Air Carrier Access Act, which cover U.S. airlines and usually all international flights departing from the U.S., generally hold airlines responsible for mobility device damage.
DOT statistics show U.S. airlines damaged about 1.38 percent of the mobility devices they handled in 2023.
When traveling on a foreign airline in another country, or when leaving from abroad to return to the U.S., local regulations typically apply, so travelers will need to research the laws of the place they’re visiting. For example, European airlines are not necessarily required to cover the full cost of wheelchair repair or replacement even if they cause the damage, according to wheelchairtravel.org .
Manual wheelchairs are often able to be stored in the cabin and don’t need to be checked, and Burns recommended power wheelchair users take extra care in protecting their devices for the cargo hold whenever possible.
3. Find a local vendor
Burns said it’s a good idea to research local wheelchair vendors beforehand so you’re ready in case something goes wrong.
“The first thing is, before you travel, make sure you know where the local repair shop is,” she said. “If it’s such damage that it’s unusable, find the local vendor and see if they have a loaner chair.”
Of course, as Joseph learned firsthand, local vendors aren’t always able to help, especially with bigger repairs.
“I’m playing with the idea of maybe having a cheaper travel chair that maybe can be broken down so you can put it in the overhead compartment when you travel and checking my everyday wheelchair, but what’s the guarantee that that won’t be damaged?” she said.
Burns acknowledged that a loaner chair or local repair may not be ideal for some wheelchair users, either.
“Wheelchairs are so specific to the person, and it really depends on the disability. People that have a more severe disability, they are going to have a much harder time in finding that replacement,” she said. “It’s not just a chair that your grandmother could use.”
