The 7 Best Places to Watch the Sunrise on the Big Island

The sunrise on the big island is one of those things that you have to experience in person.

But where do you go? With so many great options, this can be a tough decision — which is why I’m here to help!

We’ve done all the work for you! Here’s a list of our favorite spots for watching the sunrise on the big island. Find your favorites and enjoy!

You will have better chances to witness the best sunrises on the Hilo side than on the Kona side.

Now that we have answered some FAQs, lets talk about the best places to watch the sunrise on the Big Island

1. pololu valley lookout.

Pololu Valley is by far one of my favorite spots to watch the sunrise on the Big Island. Located on the Kohala Coast, this valley is one of the most beautiful places on the island.

Pololu Valley has multiple small outlooks to stop and snap a few photos before making it down to Pololu Beach.

After watching the sunrise from the lookout, you can hike the rest of the way down. Once you get down, you will be greeted by one of the best black sand beaches in Hawaii !

The hike down is less than a mile; however, it’s a bit steep coming up and can be slippery in certain sections.

I highly recommend hiking down to the beach. Remember to bring good hiking shoes and lots of water to stay hydrated.

2. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park near Halemaumau Crater

For the more adventurous travelers that love volcanoes, this one is for you! This viewpoint is along Crater Rim Drive and is located right by Halemaumau Crater. Here you will get amazing views of Kilauea Caldera (volcano mouth) and Halemaumau Crater.

There used to be glow from the lava which made for one of the most mystical sunrises, but as of late the lava is no longer visible and has hardened over. With that said, this spot is still a fantastic and unique experience. If it’s not too cloudy, you’ll also have views of Mauna Loa on the other side.

The sunrise at Hawaii Volcanoes national park is worth waking up early and is truly one of the best.

This also means that you’ll be at the park before almost anyone else, so plan accordingly to take advantage of these other activities before the crowd shows up in a few hours: Thurston Lava Tube, multiple crater sites, and all of the hiking trails, to name a few.

3. Liliuokalani Gardens

Liliuokalani Gardens is a Japanese-style garden located in Hilo. It’s located right on Banyan Drive and along Wailuku River. The view of the sunrise is breathtaking and overlooks the bay.

I, unfortunately, did not make it on time to watch the sunrise, but I am determined to go back one day. Here is a photo of what the gardens look like after sunrise:

4. Waipio Valley Sunrise

Located along the Kohala Coast you will find Waipio Valley. This is another one of my favorite spots for watching the sunrise on Hawaii’s big island.

The views at the overlook are spectacular and out of this world. You would have to go there yourself and experience this amazing sunrise to understand what I mean.

After watching the sunrise from the overlook, you can hike down to Waipio Valley. The trail starts as a paved walkway but quickly turns into a narrow cliffside path.

Waipio Valley is high on my list for the best hikes and best places to watch the sunrise.

5. Hilo Bay Sunrise

We met a local while visiting the island of Hawaii and he told us that the best place to watch the sunrise is anywhere on Hilo Bay — and he was absolutely correct.

Hilo Bay has some of the best sunrises that are definitely worth waking up early for.

6. Mauna Loa Sunrise

Mauna Loa is a 13,678′ volcano that overlooks the island of Hawaii and has some breathtaking views from the summit.

Getting there can be tricky. For the highly adventurous, you can hike to the top of Mauna Loa to watch the sunrise over Hilo bay. However, be prepared to camp out. To do this hike you must be an experienced hiker and have all the gear/supplies necessary, as the Mauna Loa Summit Trail is 19.5 miles long!

Your other option is to drive 17 miles on Saddle Road to the Mauna Loa Observatory, where you’ll hike 6 miles one way to reach the summit.

7. Mauna Kea Summit Trail

At 13,796 feet above sea level, the Mauna Kea Summit is an absolute must for Big Island sunrise.

The summit is one of the best spots to see the sunrise, but you must be prepared for an early morning wake up call. You’ll want to pack enough layers and snacks or a picnic breakfast, as it’s cooler at the top.

Wake up early and grab your flashlight or headlamp . You’re heading to   Lanikai Pill Boxes on the east side of Oahu for a sunrise that you won’t forget. Hike up in the dark, and find a spot on one of the old military bunkers, now called pillboxes.

From here, the sky turns amazing colors as the sun pops up over the   Mokulua Islands .

This is a   manageable hike   that most can do. Many folks come here to see this   beautiful show by nature. The view from these pillboxes gives you a   picture-perfect look   at how great Hawaii can be as day breaks.

You’ll reach the top just in time to see a  breathtaking view of East Oahu  as the first light of day turns the sky orange and pink.

Watching the sunrise from Koko Head gives you more than just a pretty picture; it feels like a reward for all your hard work climbing up. The  panoramic view from above  lets you see far across  Hawaii Kai and Hanauma Bay .

Head up to the summit of Haleakala in the dark and wait for the first break of sun to light up the crater. While there are plenty of great tours to choose from, these are our top three picks for a great trip! We are including the breakfast restaurants which are correct at the time of publishing, though they may change. 

Valley Isle Excursions Sunrise Tour

We had the opportunity to experience sunrise with Valley Isle Excursions , and it was a pretty epic morning. Dare we say, worth the 2:30 am wake up. 

We were picked up very early and driven up with 16-ish new friends. Thankfully, our guide knew we wanted to continue sleeping so he kept things quiet and we were able to sneak in another hour of sleep as we went up the mountain. As soon as we reached the entrance, we woke up excited! 

We made it to the summit visitors center approximately an hour before sunrise. While this felt very early, I was happy to be there so early as we were able to get a great front row spot. 

After the stunning sunrise and chant, we headed back to the van. We made one additional stop in the park before heading down the hill. We drove through upcountry Maui to breakfast at the Mill House in central Maui.

Skyline Hawaii

Gear up for an early morning tour with Skyline Hawaii ! Before we get into the tour details, you should know that this company is committed to conservation. Since 2002 they have planted over 20,000 trees and have given over $1.8 million to environmental and community nonprofits. So this is a company you can feel good about supporting. 

Their tour begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel or resort. They provide jackets for the sunrise viewing (though wear warm layers and socks…trust us!). After sunrise you’ll get an informative driving tour to learn about the history of Haleakala, the flora and fauna, and more. Breakfast is at Kula Lodge in upcountry Maui, and then you’ll be back to your hotel with the rest of the day ahead of you! 

Polynesian Adventures

One of the largest and most trusted tour operators in Hawaii also offers a great Haleakala sunrise tour . Like the other tours, you’ll be picked up from your hotel or resort very early in the morning. The tour bus will take you up the hill (feel free to nap!) and you’ll arrive at the summit visitors center with plenty of time to spare. Once you watch the spectacular sunrise, you’ll be escorted back down the mountain while your guide entertains and educates you. Honestly on all of these tours you’ll learn a lot about Hawaiian history. 

You’ll drive through upcountry to reach a local favorite spot, Kula Lodge, where you get impressive views of Maui as you eat breakfast. After breakfast you’ll enjoy the remainder of the drive back to your hotel or vacation rental. 

Haleakala Eco Tours

Take a drive with Haleakala Eco-Tours. They take care of everything. After pickup from your hotel or vacation rental, they whisk you up the mountain in their 24 passenger van. You’ll arrive in plenty of time to watch the sunrise and listen to the sunrise chant. 

After the tour, you have time to visit the Haleakala Visitors Center before you head out of the park. On your way down, your guide will talk story and give you the history of the volcano and ancient Hawaii. As you drive, you’ll get to see the towns of Kula, Makawao, and Haiku. 

Breakfast is in the north shore town of Paia (currently at Island Fresh Cafe). After that, you’ll continue the drive back to your hotel or vacation rental so you can enjoy the rest of your day!

Haleakala Sunrise Tour FAQs:

Can you see the haleakala sunrise on your own.

You sure can! But there are some things to know before you do. First, you’ll need a reservation. These reservations are available through the National Park Service and are only $1, but they do sell out quickly. So plan ahead and set your alarm to buy!

You’ll also need to pay the entrance fee upon arrival to Haleakala National Park . The current entrance fee is $30 per vehicle. 

There are no streetlights in the national park and the drive up the mountain is winding. Take care and drive slowly. And be sure to give yourself more than enough time to get there. You’ll want to arrive to your viewing point at least 30 minutes before sunrise, if not before. There will likely be a wait at the park entrance and you’ll want to take parts of the drive slowly, so factor that into your drive time estimates.

If you don’t want to do a tour but also the prospect of driving up this dormant volcano at 3 am isn’t exciting, you might want to consider heading to Haleakala for sunset . 

Alternatively, if you feel like braving the elements, there are a few options for camping in Haleakala National Park . If you reserve a campsite at Hosmer Grove, you’ll also get sunrise reservations!

Is a Haleakala sunrise tour worth it?

In our opinion, a tour was 100% worth it. We’ve visited Haleakala many times, but heading up for sunrise is another experience. We needed to leave our house at 3 am and being able to sleep on the drive up was such a luxury. Also, not being stressed about driving in the dark or getting there on time was a huge perk. 

And there were other parts of the tour that made the whole experience worth it. We loved our tour guide and though we know a good amount about the history of Maui and Haleakala (it’s our job), we learned so much new, great information. And having the extra warm parkas to help keep us warm as we were waiting for the sunrise was hugely helpful. Those extra layers were important! 

What to expect on a Haleakala sunrise tour?

All good tours will provide the same basic things:

• Transportation from your hotel or vacation rental
• A sunrise tour reservation
• Entrance to Haleakala National Park for sunrise
• A knowledgeable guide

Make sure you dress warmly (layers are your friend!) because it is unbelievably cold atop Haleakala before the sun comes up. 

What is the best place to watch the sunrise on Haleakala?

There are a few places to enjoy the sunrise, but we really enjoy watching it from the Haleakala Summit Visitors Center, which is 9,740 feet above sea level. It is closed, but standing outside of it you can get a view of Haleakala Crater which is magical as the sun rises. Don’t go to the headquarters visitors center, which is only at 7,000 feet elevation and doesn’t provide any sort of a sunrise view. 

Is sunrise better than sunset?

This is something that comes down to personal preference, but we have a whole article dedicated to the pros and cons of Haleakala sunrise vs sunset . Really what it comes down to is getting reservations (sunrise only) and if you want to be up at 2 or 3am.

5 BEST SUNRISE SPOTS IN HAWAII (OAHU)

A Hawaiian sunrise is one thing you have to see before leaving! The coming of a new day is always special. Don’t forget to check the time of sunrise! The times change throughout the year, by a couple of hours.

We check this whenever we plan to see a sunrise or sunset.

Tip: It’s best to get to your viewing point 30-45 minutes before the listed sunrise time.

Being early will help ensure you get the best seat in the house. As a photographer, getting to wherever you need to be at the earliest, enables us to capture the in-between moments of sunrise. Sometimes, those are the best times of the day! Beautiful colors can peer through the clouds just before the sun hits Earth’s horizon and immediately lose the beautiful tones due to heavy cloud cover.

In other cases, you may start packing up your things only for the sun to pierce the veil lighting up the overcast clouds for a beautiful pink/purple/orange sunrise. It all happens very quickly, within minutes, so it’s always best to be early and ready with a finger on your camera.

The Sun rises in the East and Sets in the West so being in East Oahu is the side you want to be on to witness epic sunrises. Here are places we love to photograph:

The best way to experience a sunrise would be through kayak . Start paddling just as the first light hits the horizon, while the sun is still hiding. Depending on the speed of your paddling, the real sunrise colors may enfold midway. However, watching the sunrise, without building up a sweat or getting wet, from the beach is also desirable.

The coast of Kailua and Lanikai are family friendly and ocean safe compared to most beaches. All around best spot to watch sunrise if you can make the 30-45 minute drive out to the East Side coming from Waikiki .

Tip: Make it a day

Start with a sunrise hike up the Lanikai Pillbox hike , hang out at the beach, and kayak later in the day. Or, switch it up entirely with a kayak to the mokes first, hang out at Lanikai beach after coming back and end the day with a sunset hike – The sun will be setting behind the pillboxes, over the Ko’olau Mountain Range.

2) Makapu’u Lighthouse Hike / Makapu’u Beach Park

Known as a bodyboarders paradise, Makapu’u Beach Park is a vast sandy beach where, in the distance, lies Rabbit Island. If you’re feeling ambitious, head up the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail! It’s newly paved and an easy trek up to a rewarding view that’s great for young and old. Just over the view of the famous lighthouse, whales can be spotted during the winter months. Beautiful place to welcome the day.

3) Sandy Beach Park

Sandy beach: where broken necks, lost fins, and massive shore breaks are expected. Luckily, there’s no need to risk body and limb: Parking is relatively open during the early hours of dawn. Pull up to oceanfront parking, sip your coffee and watch bodyboarders get pummeled as the sun shines through epic waves revealing lost fins of yesterday. Better yet, take out that waterproof camera and join the dawn patrol action!

4) Kokohead

If you’re looking for a challenge, hiking this monster of a trail is the creme of the crop. At the peak, the 360-degree view displays Waikiki, Hawaii Kai, Hanauma Bay , the aforementioned Sandys down to Makapuu Ridge can be seen, all from the top of Koko head bunker but be advised, IT IS TOUGH!

Tip: Bring flashlights for sunrise and be sure to stay hydrated!

With 4 other top locations to view the sunrise in Hawaii, our last location is a popular one: Waikiki. If you can’t make it out to any of the previously mentioned locations, anywhere in Waikiki offers decent spots to set up a sunrise moment.

Waikiki is the best alternative to hiking or driving anywhere to enjoy the sunrise. If you’re staying in Waikiki, no problem! A short walk to Waikiki Beach or even Ala Moana (albeit quite far from downtown Waikiki) are pleasant places to view the sunrise. If you had to choose to watch the sunset or sunrise in Waikiki, I would recommend the latter as the majority of the crowds are still sleeping in. During sunset, the beaches can get crowded.

There you have it! Our favorite places to watch a Hawaiian Sunrise. Taking the moment with little to no crowds around you can be found in the early moments of the day like before sunrise which is why we enjoy it more often than a sunset. However, Sunsets are usually the ones that display all types of colors!

*Something to keep in mind for sunrise hikes: You have to hike up in the dark, so you will need a flashlight.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience while in Oahu, why not set your alarm early and hit the trails for a sunrise hike? Oahu is home to some of the best sunrise hikes around, with stunning views of the island’s mountains and coastlines Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting out, there are plenty of sunrise hikes on Oahu to choose from.

BEST SUNRISE HIKES ON OAHU

In this blog post, I’ll share my favorite Oahu sunrise hikes. I’ve personally hiked everything on this list and will only recommend hikes in this article that have a good view of the sunrise. Therefore, most of the sunrise hikes on this list will be on the east coast of Oahu, which is where the sun rises.

KAHEKILI RIDGE HIKE

The Kahekili Trail is a challenging but rewarding hike on Oahu’s east coast. This three-kilometer trail leads to the summit with 600 meters of elevation, making it a steep climb. As you traverse exposed ridges, you’ll be treated to stunning views of Kualoa, Chinaman’s Hat, and Kahana Bay. While this hike is a great choice for a sunrise adventure, it’s also perfect for taking in the vibrant blue and green hues of the midday sun.

KULIOUOU RIDGE HIKE

The Kuliouou Ridge Trail has always been my favorite sunrise hike on Oahu. It’s just a short drive from town but the trail quickly leaves civilization behind as you climb 500m of incline to reach the sunrise viewpoint. After clambering up the stairs and weaving through the dense forest, you will be rewarded with views of Lanikai and the east coast while also enjoying a clear sight all the way back to Diamond Head Crater.

THREE PEAKS HIKE

The Olomana Trail, also known as the ‘Three Peaks Hike’, on the east side of Oahu Hawaii is one of my favorite challenging hikes on the island. It’s quite technical with lots of bouldering, rope sections, and tree roots to navigate so your mind and body get quite the workout. Once you reach the first peak, the views along the ridge line are incredible. I suggest heading up at sunrise or even before sunrise so you can watch the amazing colors in the sky over Lanikai Beach.

HAWAII HIKING PACKING LIST

Many people come unprepared for hiking on Oahu and that’s why there are so many rescues. Make sure you at least have the basics and you will be prepared for bad weather or any mishaps on the trail. A headlamp, rain jacket, and good hiking boots or shoes are the three main pieces of gear you need. Below are my four Hawaii hiking essentials.

• Arcteryx BETA AR Rain Jacket : This is my go-to rain jacket. It’s super light, folds down into a tiny ball, and protects brilliantly in a storm. This one never leaves my backpack.
• Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Hiking Boots : For the best ankle support, waterproofing, and durable exterior I’m a fan of tough but light hiking boots like these Salomons for my adventures.
• Black Diamond Head Torch : I can’t tell you how many times, I’ve arrived back from a hike unexpectedly late. I always keep this lightweight but strong headtorch in my bag for the unexpected.
• Darn Tough Socks : These are the most comfortable hiking socks I’ve ever worn and last for years. They also have a lifetime warranty and you just send them in with a hole and they replace it no questions asked.

PALI PUKA HIKE

The Pali Puka Hike on Oahu is a thrilling and challenging hike that is perfect for adventure seekers. The trailhead can be found at the Pali Lookout and the hike follows a narrow ridge line with steep drop-offs on either side. The highlight of the hike is reaching the Puka, which is a hole in the rock face that provides stunning views of the Windward side of Oahu. It’s important to note that this sunrise hike on Oahu is not for the faint of heart and requires a certain level of physical fitness and comfort with heights.

KOKO HEAD HIKE

The Koko Head Hike railway stairs are a grueling test of will and lead you to the Koko Head Crater summit, which is a view worth the grind! The Koko Head Crater hike is one of the most popular hikes on Oahu and while it might seem that the Koko Head stairs are a relatively short hike but don’t be fooled. The unforgiving incline will have you gasping for breath by the time you reach the top an you will see that it is a popular physical challenge amongst locals and tourists. STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN (BACK WAY)

The Moanalua Valley Trail to Haiku stairs hiking route is one of the most adventurous hikes on Oahu. The hike follows the Moanalua Valley Trail before connecting up the Moanalua Middle Ridge, which is the legal ‘backway’ to the Stairway to Heaven (Haiku Stairs) satellite summit. While you can’t legally step foot on the stairs or satellite summit area, you can make it all the way up to that area so this route is a great alternative to the controversial and heavily regulated Haiku Stairs (the front way). If you are very adventurous and hike up with a headlamp, you can make it up early enough for an epic sunrise hike on Oahu.

MAKAPUU LIGHTHOUSE WALK

The Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail is one of the most popular hikes on the island of Oahu for several reasons. This trail comes with a slice of history with the lighthouse, built-in 1909 standing at the eastern point of Oahu. KOKO CRATER RIM HIKE

The Koko Crater Rim Trail offers an exciting option for those who want to skip the crowds at the Koko Head Crater Stairs. Starting from the base of the crater rim, the trail takes you up to the summit of Koko Head, where you can take in stunning views of Hawaii Kai, Hanauma Bay, and the east coast of the island. PRIDE ROCK HIKE

Pride Rock, located in Oahu, offers a fantastic view of the Kualoa Mountains and Kaneohe Region during sunrise. It is easily accessible, with only a 30-minute hike. PU’U PIEI HIKE

The Pu’u Piei Hiking Trail is one of the best hikes on the  east side of Oahu . Overlooking Kahana Bay and directly adjacent to the popular Crouching Lion Hike, this trail is simply spectacular. Pu’u Piei is much harder than Crouching Lion and has a very steep climb with 500 meters of elevation. There are also numerous rocky outcrops where hikers use ropes and scramble to maneuver through the route.

• Keokea Ranch Estate is located off Kula Highway by the western slope of Haleakela
• Holua Cabin is the option that’s closest to the summit on Haleakala’s northern downslope (located off the Halemau’u hiking trail next to the Holua Campground)

Sunrise at Haleakala: The Perfect Place to Watch the Sunrise in Maui (+ Haleakala Sunrise Tours)

Let’s face it — I’m no sunrise girl. Yes, I wake up early when absolutely necessary (say, to catch an early morning flight to Maui or Oahu ), but I typically choose not to wake up at the crack of dawn. Sunsets are more my jam, unless it means watching the sun rise above the clouds from a volcano in Maui.

And yes, I just said VOLCANO.

Close your eyes and think of Maui. I’m sure palm trees swaying in the wind, juicy pineapples, and snorkeling with sea turtles come to mind. But a 10,023 foot volcano?! What the actual F?! Yup, that’s over here in Maui. 

Haleakala is home to Maui’s highest peak; of course it’s the perfect place to watch the sunrise on the island! And plus, Haleakala literally means “House of the Sun”, so what better place to watch the sunrise than at Haleakala!

Just imagine that. Picture it in your mind. Sunrise above the clouds from an active volcano. In MAUI! Mystical. Intoxifying. Other-wordly. Exactly my point. Well worth the early morning wake up call.  

And why’s it just so spectacular? A few things actually! 

• The summit’s high elevation (at a whopping 10,023 feet)! 
• The lack of light and environmental pollution. 
• The dynamic weather patterns. 
• The size of the crater; it’s massive — at 7 miles across, 2 miles wide, and close to 3,000 feet deep! 
• It’s MAUI, baby (and everything just feels different on the islands). 

These all make for perfect conditions to view the sky and sunrise! You can even see 4 islands from the summit on a clear day!

A Little Background on Haleakala National Park

Like I noted before, Haleakala is a VOLCANO on Maui! And more specifically, a shield volcano which rose from the ocean approximately 1 MILLION years ago. So yeah, it’s been around quite a while.

In terms of culture and history, natives believe Haleakala is the site where demigod Maui lassoed the sun, ultimately slowing its passage so people had more time to dry kapa (cloth) and grow food. Meaning they were able to live more comfortably on the land. This is all a legend of course, but it’s been a sacred spot to the Hawaiian people for generations and generations.

A few more interesting facts about Haleakala National Park:

• Haleakala National Park was named an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980. It also has the largest concentration of endangered species of any National Park.You may even see endangered Hawaiian geese here!
• It’s one of the three tallest mountains not only in Hawaii, but on Earth (along with Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes on the Big Island).
• There’s almost 20,000 feet of mountain hidden below the ocean surface, meaning it’s roughly 30,000 feet tall (from the summit to its base on the ocean floor).

Not many people realize this, but there’s actually 2 completely separate sections of Haleakala National Park. One is where you marvel at the Haleakala sunrise from the summit, and the other is the coastal area of Kīpahulu (where you’ll find the freshwater Pools of Ohe’o, waterfalls, and a lush bamboo forest — typically visited while driving the Road to Hana ).

Don’t try to visit on the same day — these two sections are at least a 2 ½ hour drive apart. But do keep the park’s entrance sticker — it’s valid for 7 days at both sections of the park, meaning you only have to pay once!

Is Haleakala Active?

Did you know that each Hawaiian island was created and formed by volcanic eruptions?! True story! So without these active volcanoes and lava flows, there’d be no Hawaii at all! Kinda crazy, right?! Haleakala erupted at least 10 times during the past 1,000 years, with the most recent eruption between about 600 and 400 years ago. So a long time ago, but not sooooo long ago.

But don’t fret — Haleakala is now considered to be dormant since it hasn’t erupted in a relatively long time. BUT it could (and probably will) erupt again sometime in the far off future (don’t worry, it’s on close watch).

Making a Reservation for Sunrise at Haleakala 

The first (and most important) thing you need to know about sunrise at Haleakala is that you NEED to make a reservation in advance — and getting a ticket can be super competitive. 

• Note: Haleakala Summit Sunrise tickets are NOT available at the park or entrance station. They MUST be bought in advance.

On our first trip to Maui back in 2013, there was no reservation system in place to see the sunrise at Haleakala. And OMFG it was crowded like no other. We were fighting people for the view, parking was an absolute nightmare, and the traffic, sheesh! Not the serene early morning experience we were hoping for. We still enjoyed it, but we left thinking it could have been way better (the organization of it, not the sunrise — that was outta this world).

Thankfully, since then, reservations for sunrise are now required. Yeah, yeah, yeah, this means you can’t decide the night before you wanna watch sunrise at Haleakala early the next morning, but I promise the planning ahead is worth it. 

Since sunrise at Haleakala has become so incredibly popular, you now need to make reservations in advance. And there’s not tons of them. Only 150 on any given day! For all the people visiting Maui!  

Individual spots can fill up quickly since there are only 150 parking spaces available per morning. Make reservations here or take the easy way out and book with a certified tour operator (who takes care of your transportation to and from the summit as well as any documentation/advanced reservation requirements).

Note that tickets are per vehicle, not per person (phew!). While tickets are limited to one per customer every three days, don’t be that douche who buys up as many tickets as possible if you’re not gonna use them. Let others take in the magic of Haleakala as well! I was at the beach one day and someone was able to get sunrise tickets for two different days and they weren’t even sure if they were gonna use them. UGH! Not cool, at all!

Psst: Don’t make the long drive to Haleakala (and then the summit) without a reservation if you’re hoping to catch sunrise! They won’t let you in. You’ll need to wait until 7am to enter, and sadly, sunrise will be completely over by then.

When to Book:

60 days in advance!!!! And not a day later. Inventory for Haleakala sunrise tickets are released on a 60-day rolling window prior to the date you wanna go. This means that tickets are released exactly 60 days beforehand, and they go fast! Do NOT wait to buy your ticket! 

If you’re unable to snag a ticket 60 days in advance (or you booked your trip to Maui with less than 2 months to go), there’s thankfully another way! There’s a secondary inventory release 2-days prior to the date you wanna go! While there’s not as many tickets this close to the actual date, you should still go for it. And remember, they get released at 7am HST (Hawaii’s time zone) — know in advance what time this is near you if you’re not yet in Hawaii.

Note : If you are within the 60-day window but the day you choose says tickets are “not yet released,” that means all 60-day window tickets are gone. Yes, every single one of them. The “not yet released” tickets will be released 2-days prior to the start date at 7am HST.

How Much Does it Cost?!

And get this — reservations are only $1. ONE DOLLAR! By far one of the least expensive things you can do on your Maui itinerary ! You will still need to pay the $30 park entry fee, so just keep that into account when planning (although Haleakala is a national park so it’s included on your America the Beautiful national parks pass should you already have that).

Are Reservations Always Required at Haleakala?

For sunrise — yes! Haleakala National Park now requires reservations for each vehicle entering the park before sunrise (3:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.). But you can go other times of day without a reservation at all. And I promise you, the park is still spectacular whether you see the sunrise or not. But watching the sunrise is definitely a Hawaii bucket list item for sure.

Tips for Getting A Reservation for Sunrise at Haleakala National Park

It’s a competitive sport in and of itself getting that coveted reservation for sunrise at Haleakala. I’m part of numerous Hawaii Facebook groups and people are so surprised they’re not able to easily get a ticket a few days before! Thankfully I’ve got a whole bunch of tips for ya!  Either write them down or save this post for later — I’m sharing my exact method here!

Tip #1: YOU NEED A RESERVATION FOR SUNRISE AT THE SUMMIT (entering between 3am – 7am). Yes, I know I keep saying this, but you NEED one. You’ll be denied entry without one. There’s literally no way around this. Figure out exactly when you want to see the sunrise at Haleakala, and mark your calendar NOW. Then figure out EXACTLY 60 days prior from that date, and mark that in your calendar too. 

Tip #2: Create an account on Recreation.gov NOW , or at least before the dates of the Haleakala National Park Summit Sunrise tickets go on sale (60 days in advance). But just do it now so you don’t forget (it’s free!). You’ll need to log into your account before you can add a sunrise ticket to your cart and then purchase it. Don’t waste time the morning of creating an account — you’ll likely miss out on tickets before you even finish signing up!

Tip #3: Be ready the literal second reservations go on sale. Not 5 minutes later, not 2 minutes later, not even 1 minute later. Be ready and at your computer with the browser open to add the ticket to your cart at exactly 7am HST 60 days prior. I’m not kidding when I say it’s a competitive sport. The tickets sell out right away — you’ve gotta be one of the first! And unfortunately, there’s no guarantee of getting a ticket even if you attempt the second they become available. But hey, gotta up your chances as best you can!

Tip #4: I always recommend sunrise at Haleakala on the first morning of your trip (easier for jet lag this way). BUT, if you’re not able to do so/can’t get a reservation, you can keep checking every day to see if you’re able to secure a ticket for the following days. If you’ve got a few days in Maui you’ve got more chances to snag a ticket. 🙂

I couldn’t get a sunrise reservation. Now what?!

Thankfully, you’ve got a few options! 

First option is to book yourself on a Haleakala sunrise tour. While these are obviously more costly than the $1 reservation fee, if you wanna see sunrise, there’s no other way. I’ve listed a few options below — go check those out!

Second option is to simply go after sunrise. As noted earlier, you’re allowed to enter the park without an advance reservation after 7am each day. The park is absolutely amazing during sunrise or after — I promise! Visiting after sunrise means you’ll get to see the crater all lit up, and it’ll already be quite warm out! Plus, you don’t need to skip/rush through breakfast, so you can hike as long as you want on the Sliding Sands Trail without anyone getting hangry (guilty!).

Third option is to watch the sunset at Haleakala , which more and more people have been doing if they’re unable to get a sunrise reservation. While I’ve never watched a Haleakala sunset, I’ve heard it’s absolutely spectacular. And you don’t need to bundle up in all your winter gear. Although if you wanna stay after sunset to do some star gazing (highly recommended), you’ll wanna bring along some warm clothes.

Haleakala Sunrise Tours 

Can’t get a reservation? Don’t fret! You can take a tour instead, meaning they take care of your transportation to and from the summit as well as any documentation/advanced reservation requirements. This means you don’t need to struggle to get your own sunrise reservation. Phew!

Sunrise at Haleakala with Breakfast : This tour will pick you up at your hotel, drive through Maui’s upcountry Kula District, and experience the awe-inspiring sunrise at Haleakala National Park. All before breakfast, which is then served at a local restaurant afterwards. The guides know all about the one-of-a-kind landscape and terrain, meaning you’ll see rare silversword plants and maybe even catch a glimpse of the Nene goose!

Sunrise at Haleakala then Self-Guided Bike Ride down the Volcano : Want something a bit more active?! Watch the sunrise atop Haleakala, then bike down the mountain from 6,500 ft. (meaning you’ll glide on by for 23 miles!). And the best part — going at YOUR pace and not the pace of a group (how most guided sunrise bike tours are organized). Entrance to Haleakala for sunrise, transport to the top, and bike rental are all included!

Haleakala Sunrise then Guided Bike Down to the Beach : LIke the sound of that second tour but want some more instruction from a professional guide? You don’t bike down a volcano every weekend?! ? Then this is the Haleakala sunrise tour for you. Watch a magical Maui sunrise atop 10,023 foot Mt. Haleakala, view the spectacular crater, and then enjoy biking down 26 miles. All transport, safety, and bike gear provided. And the best part — you finish riding at the beach (unlike most other companies)!

How to Get to Haleakala National Park

Haleakala National Park is kinda in the middle of nowhere on Maui. It’s not near any of the major tourist areas, meaning you’ll more than likely have a bit of a drive no matter where you’re staying. Like I mentioned earlier, there’s two parts to Haleakala National Park. Make sure you direct to the right one! 

You’ll wanna input “Haleakala National Park Summit Entrance” right into your GPS (where you’ll show your reservation and park pass/pay to enter). Once you get there, you’ve still got another 30 minute (12 mile) drive to the actual summit and Visitor Center! 

Times below are to the summit entrance station at 7,000 feet elevation. Regardless of where you’re coming from, tack on another 30 minutes or so to drive the remaining 3,000 feet of elevation to where you’ll watch the sunrise at Haleakala. 

• From Kahului: 50 minutes (28 miles)
• From Paia : 50 minutes (23 miles)
• From Kihei: 1 hour (35 miles)
• From Wailea: 1 hour, 15 minutes (40 miles)
• From Lahaina: 1 ½ hours (50 miles)
• From Kaanapali/Kapalua : 2 hours (60 miles)
• From Hana: 2 ½ hours (60 miles)

But remember, there may be traffic and the roads are steep and windy (meaning you’ll need to go super slow). Take your time. You actually climb from sea level to above 10,000 ft in only 38 miles… It’s one of the shortest ascending roads to this elevation in the WORLD. Kinda crazy, right?

Note that there may be a line at the entrance to show your reservation, so plan to arrive extra early! You don’t wanna come all this way and then somehow miss sunrise! And plus, the Haleakala Highway (Route 378 — the road you’ll be taking) is super windy, so you can’t go fast.

If you wanna be the absolute closest on the island, plan to spend the night in Upcountry the night before. But honestly? Getting up super early is just part of the experience! And it’ll still be a long drive from Upcountry since the national park is so high up on super windy roads.

You’ll be driving up the mountain in the dark, so you won’t get the views on your way. But when you’re done with sunrise at Haleakala, make sure to stare out that window! The views are just remarkable — you’ll be driving above the clouds for a bit. It’s absolutely wild!

As you drive to the national park and within, please respect speed limits. The park road passes through endangered species habitats, so gotta be extra careful.

Psst — you’ll need to show your reservation confirmation email and a photo ID matching the name of the reservation-holder when you enter the park. Be prepared and have it ready!

Parking at Haleakala for Sunrise

Both times we went to Haleakala for sunrise, the lot for the actual summit (the Haleakala Observatory) was already full! And we got there way before sunrise! WHOA — told you this place is popular! 

You can still walk up there if you really want, but the views we saw were absolutely spectacular where we were so I don’t see any reason to. We parked by the Visitor Center and watched the sunrise from the viewpoint over there. 

You have to leave at what time?!

Way earlier than you probably thought. Yup — this will 1000% be a super early morning. But I promise you it’s well worth it! For sunrise at 5:38am in mid-June, we set our alarms to 3:30am (with back-up alarms every 5 minutes afterwards). And we almost didn’t make it, even by staying in Paia which is slightly closer to Haleakala than other popular tourist towns. So do me a favor and wake up an hour before you think you have to.

Of course the sun rose the absolute earliest out of the entire year in mid-June when we visited. The summer solstice — of course!

As we already established, sunrise at the Haleakala summit is super popular, so aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before sunrise. You’ll have to drive the winding 38 mile Crater Road in the dark, so plan to leave even earlier than you think.

• Check exact sunrise times here : The sun rises between 5:30am – 7am depending on the time of year, with summer being earliest and winter being the latest.

What to Bring and Wear

Word of advice: Bring Warm Clothes. Yes, it’s Maui, but the temperature drops about 3º for every 1,000 feet of elevation, meaning it’ll be about 30º colder at the summit than at sea level. Remember — you’re here to watch the sunrise, meaning it’ll be chilly regardless (there’s no sun to warm everything up just yet)! So if it’s 65° at sea level on the beach in the wee hours of the morning, it’ll be a cool 35° at Haleakala. I didn’t bundle up enough and I was freezing my butt off. The temps frequently drop to below freezing!

More advice: The summit is remote and as we already discussed, at a super high altitude. There’s not many facilities nearby, and emergency medical assistance is at least an hour away. I don’t say this to scare you, but to stress the importance of bringing everything you need — just in case. 

All My Haleakala Must-Haves:

• Layers, layers, and layers. And then probably another layer. Take a scarf, alllll the sweatshirts you brought with you, your hotel blanket if you’re feeling a bit extra, and layer, layer, layer. You’ll thank me later when you’re standing there comfortably watching the sunrise at 10,000 feet without freezing your little toes off.
• Snacks if you think you’ll be hungry that early (my husband got super hungry so I’m glad I had some leftover muffin and trail mix in the car from the day before).
• Fill up your gas tank ahead of time, preferably the night before. There’s no gas stations in the park, so come prepared with what you’ll need for the day and then some.
• Sunscreen! Yes, sunscreen! The sun’s radiation is super intense at this super high elevation (hey, you’ll be 10,000 feet above sea level) so be sure to protect your skin and slather on that sunscreen. Sun burns aren’t sexy anyways, and they hurt! Don’t wanna be a lobster before you even hit the beach!
• Reusable water bottles, especially if you’ll be doing a bit of hiking after watching the sunrise at Haleakala.
• Sturdy hiking shoes if you plan to hang around a bit afterwards and explore. We walked a bit on the Sliding Sands trail and regular sneakers were sufficient (although the sand is dusty and red, meaning my light pink Nikes got kinda dirty).
• National Parks Pass. Of course I left mine at home and we had to pay the $30 fee to get in, whoops! I mean, you don’t typically think of Hawaii as a place you’d be going to National Parks! Don’t be me — pack your parks pass ASAP!

During your trip: The first morning you have! Why see the Haleakala sunrise on the first day? Because depending on where you’re coming from, you’ll most likely have a case of major jet lag. And I mean MAJOR. Use this to your advantage! If you’re flying in from the East Coast USA, 2am will actually feel more like 8am. Not so terrible now, am I right?

Weather at Haleakala: Like Olympic National Park in Washington , the weather is pretty tough to accurately forecast. It’s highly unpredictable (especially at the summit), and can change super fast. Like I keep stressing, just come prepared for freezing wind chill temps just in case — you just never know!

Typically, summers are dry and warm (well, relatively), while winters can be wet, windy, and downright freezing. There’s even usually at least a few days per year that the summit gets a dusting of snow! How wild would it be to see snow in Hawaii?! If you want the best chance of near-perfect conditions, check sunrise at Haleakala off your Hawaii bucket list in the summer months.

On a normal day at sunrise, the temps are usually in the high 30’s to low 40’s. Brr…. but thankfully, the air heats up quickly once the sun is out. I had to take my fleece off within 20 minutes of sunrise! By noon it can be 65-75°F!

Other Tips for Visiting Haleakala at Sunrise

• As always, when hiking in national parks and elsewhere, Leave No Trace. Please leave natural resources and cultural artifacts, rocks, and structures alone. Dispose of your trash properly, never feed/chase/harass animals, and be a kind human being.
• The summit is a sacred place to Native Hawaiians. Please be quiet and respectful. This is not the place for your early morning dance party — leave your Moana singalongs to the privacy of your own car. ?
• On that note, local Hawaiians welcome the sunrise with an ole or Hawaiian chant. Listen to this as you gaze at the sunrise at Haleakala — it’s downright magical.

Things to do after watching a Haleakala Sunrise

Don’t leave so fast! Sure, sunrise at Haleakala is an early morning adventure, but that doesn’t mean you need to leave as soon as the sun breaks the horizon. Stay a while — the park and surroundings are awesome!

• Walk on the Sliding Sands Trail a bit. You don’t have to go far, but even walking 20 minutes down into the crater will feel otherworldly! The colors of the terrain are absolutely outstanding! Just remember you have to go back up the same way you walked down, so don’t go terribly far — and that elevation is difficult (there’s less oxygen in the air), especially on a hungry stomach.

• Check out some viewpoints. We randomly found a viewpoint with views of the 3 cinder cones, and I honestly thought I was staring right out onto Mars. Absolutely mindblowing. I still can’t believe what I saw. It’s called the Kalahaku Overlook — don’t miss it. Absolutely spectacular. 

• And once hunger sets in, make a beeline straight to Kula Bistro. I had one of the best egg omelettes of my life here — that, or maybe I was just starving — but really though, it was SO good. We went to Kula Lodge last time we headed to Haleakala for sunrise, but I’ve heard the food and service have really gone downhill lately. What a shame — I remember the view being so gorgeous!

• Explore some of Upcountry Maui (which isn’t terribly far from Haleakala and Kula Bistro). Head to the Ali’i’ Kula Lavender Farm, Surfing Goat Dairy, and Alba’s Cuban Coladas. Unfortunately we visited on a day where much of what I wanted to see was closed, so we’ll have to continue exploring Upcountry another time!

The ticket for Haleakala ($30) is only good for 3 days not 7. The 7 days comes in if you choose to upgrade to a pass, your $30 will be. Valid for 7 days for the upgrade. Also, it is not an active volcano as you mentioned. As of 2021 there are not 150 tickets per day for sunrise. It is less however I cannot disclose to you the exact number. Just thought I would correct you since you had some Important misinformation. Aloha!

Here’s a brief outline of the schedule:

• 2:30 am – 3:50 am: Hotel pick-ups in West Maui and South Maui
• 4:00 am – 4:30 am: Restroom break and stop at the 76 Station for drinks

Why We Chose This Maui Tour

We’ve always driven up to Haleakala National Park on our own, but always when it was light out. The drive itself is beautiful, but it’s a lot of switchbacks and the altitude change makes me dizzy.

So, I figured for my most recent trip to Maui I would try out a sunrise tour at Haleakala National Park to see if it was worth paying for vs driving myself.

I’m so glad that we did! I could barely keep my eyes open on the whole drive up because of waking up at 2:30am!

What to Know about this Haleakala National Park Sunrise Tour Before You Go:

Hotel pickup.

If you are staying at a hotel or condo in Ka’anapali , Lahaina , Kihei , or Wailea , you can get picked up right from your accommodations. If you are in a vacation rental home, you can arrange to get picked up in a public area.

For reference, for our trip in March 2022 the pick up time was 2:30am in Lahaina and 3:10am for our hotel in Kihei.

There are Restroom Breaks

If you’re someone who needs frequent restroom breaks, this tour has you covered! There was a 15 minute restroom break in Kahului and another one on the way up Haleakala (at the 7,000 ft marker).

There are also restrooms near the Haleakala Visitor’s Center. And then another 5 minute restroom break on the way down Haleakala and then restrooms at Kula Lodge (where you’ll stop for breakfast)

There’s a Stop for Coffee/Drinks

If you need your caffeine fix, there’s a quick stop at the 76 Station to pick up coffee. It’s also a great place to get water, ginger ale, or anything else you might need during the tour.

You Might Feel Sick

I mentioned ginger ale specifically because there’s a chance you might feel queasy on the ride up to Haleakala National Park. It’s pitch black outside and you’ll be traveling up a switchback road up to 10,000 ft above sea level.

So, there’s a chance of motion sickness as well as altitude sickness.

One trick is to close your eyes the entire drive up from Kula to the top of Haleakala. There are also sick bags on board in case you need them.

It’s COLD Up There!

The weather at Haleakala Crater can be unpredictable. The day we went, it was in the 30s but it was crazy windy and felt so much colder than that. It was so cold that other people were talking about going back to the bus before sunrise.

But, the prior day, it was a little warmer and there was no wind, so it was much more comfortable. It’s best to plan for the worst and be pleasantly surprised.

The Highlights of this Maui Tour and What You Should Look Out For

Stargazing at haleakala.

Something that hadn’t occurred to me is that when you go somewhere before sunrise, the stars are still out! And when we went, there were also some planets in the sky visible at Haleakala National Park.

There were tons and tons of stars in the sky, but I was mostly distracted by spotting Jupiter without needing a telescope.

Mount Haleakala Sunrise

So I had to start with the most obvious highlight: seeing the Haleakala Crater sunrise! It really is pretty magical and unlike any sunrise I’ve ever seen before.

Our hotel receptionist told me that seeing the sunrise from a mountain is spectacular because you just don’t know where to look. And she was totally right about the Haleakala summit sunrise.

There was the obvious place to look (right at the sun) but it was also impressive to see the light touch the crater, the visitors center, and all the crevices of Maui.

Breakfast at Kula Lodge

Many Haleakala bus tours stop by Kula Lodge for breakfast. Normally I’m not hungry enough for breakfast, but I definitely had an appetite by the time 8:30am came around.

We pre-ordered our food on the bus and then put the number of the meal we chose in front of us at the table and our food was delivered. It was so fast and efficient and I wish more places did this!

I admit, I had low expectations of the food since it came out so quickly. However, it was really tasty. And I liked the variety of options.

The setting of the restaurant was gorgeous and there were massive windows that overlooked the area.

Another cool thing is that there’s a botanical garden you can visit when you are done eating. It’s really pretty and easy enough to do a quick walk through before heading back on the bus.

Drive Through Upcountry Maui

Since the drive up to Haleakala Crater is in the dark, the drive down the volcano and through Upcountry Maui is really beautiful. It’s a great opportunity to see animals, plants, and rolling hills of grass.

I think Upcountry Maui is one of the most under-rated beautiful places on Maui .

Haleakala Sunrise Tour vs Driving Up Yourself

The drive up to Haleakala Crater is really beautiful and fairly easy to do on your own…during the daylight hours.

The road has a lot of switchbacks and goes 10,000 feet up, which can make a lot of drivers (and passengers) feel sick or dizzy. And when it’s pitch black, it’s hard to find a spot to pull over. Plus there are some hairpin turns that are tricky to see.

When you do a sunrise tour at Haleakala National Park, you’re leaving the driving to professionals that could probably do it with their eyes closed. Plus, you’ll have extra time to rest so you’ll be able to enjoy sunrise.

There’s also the issue with Haleakala sunrise reservations. If you want to drive up on your own, you’ll need to secure reservations so you can park. There are limited Haleakala National Park sunrise reservation tickets each day and they are really hard to snatch up.

When you do a tour, that’s all taken care of because the bus has a parking spot every day of the year.

Haleakala Tour Tips for Families

What to wear.

It is COLD up there so you should definitely wear as many layers as you can. I wore athletic shoe s, socks , jeans , a t-shirt , a sweatshirt , lightweight down jacket and a knit beanie and I was still freezing.

You’ll definitely want long pants and a few layers on top. You can also bring blankets from your hotel room.

Don’t show up in shorts or think you can manage the cold for a few minutes. I stood out there for an hour (to get a good spot) and the people wearing shorts bailed before sunrise. Don’t let that be you.

What to Bring

If you plan on taking photos/video, I recommend bringing hand warmers to keep in your pockets. That will keep your fingers from going numb.

You’ll also want a sturdy tri-pod if you are doing a time-lapse video. I saw a lot of lightweight ones moving around a lot, which leads to lame videos.

I’d also bring your own drinks for the bus ride (and maybe even snacks ) if you are particular. It might also help to bring motion sickness pills or ginger chews if you tend to get nauseous.

It’s also a smart idea to bring a phone charger . Our bus has a regular outlet as well as a USB outlet. You’ll use up a ton of battery if you’re taking lots of photos and video.

Where to Go

I stayed at the railing with 99% of everyone else at Haleakala National Park for sunrise. However, my mom walked up to the viewing area about 1/4 mile up from the parking lot and there were far less people.

So, if your kids can handle it, whip out your cellphone flashlight and do the easy walk up to the higher platform. Plus, it will feel good to move your body after the long ride.

How Much Does it Cost and Where is it Located?

This Halekala Sunrise Tour on Maui is $215 per person through Viator. They pick you up from your hotel/condo, so you don’t have to worry about finding them in the middle of the night.

Haleakala National Park Sunrise Tour FAQs

Breakfast takes place at Kula Lodge and includes coffee, hot tea, or juice. There’s a variety of choices that guests can select from including loco moco, bacon and eggs, waffles, pancakes, and more.

It can get extremely cold up at the summit before sunrise, so you’ll definitely want to dress in layers.

When you sign up for the tour, there’s a place to enter your hotel/condo information. They will contact you and let you know what time and where to meet. As a reference, our pick-up time was 3:10 a.m. at our hotel sign in Kihei.

So, is this Haleakala Sunrise Tour Worth It?

Absolutely. Driving up the switchback road to get to the summit of Haleakala in complete darkness would be incredibly stressful. Then add in being tired/jetlagged and unfamiliar with the area, and it’s a recipe for disaster.

The first 2 hours or so of the tour, the bus is completely dark and there’s no commentary so you can go back to sleep (or at least zone out in the quiet).

It’s SO much easier to leave it to the professionals who do this everyday. That way, you can take a nap (or at least close your eyes) to avoid nausea. Plus you won’t have to try to score the coveted Haleakala sunrise tickets.

If you’re planning a trip to Maui, seeing the Haleakala sunrise might top your must-do list. Here, day breaks at 10,000 feet above sea level, casting golden hues across layers of endless clouds. Then, as the clouds clear and the skies turn blue, you get to enjoy one of the most magnificent places in Hawaii. 

But seeing the sunrise at Haleakala can be a challenge. You must reserve your spot, wake up very early, and navigate your way up the mountain in the dark. 

This is why watching the sunset at Haleakala is becoming increasingly popular. 

Some well-meaning friends will be quick to recommend the sunset – after all, isn’t it just the sunrise but in reverse? Well, not exactly. 

Choosing between seeing the Haleakala sunrise or sunset requires some thought and expert advice, which we’re sharing ahead. 

Here is our full breakdown of sunrise vs. sunset at Haleakala. 

Watch the Haleakala Sunrise If:

• You expect you’ll be jetlagged anyway. Many visitors from the East are up at dawn the first few days, so it makes perfect sense to visit during sunrise. For those who are just “morning people,” the same rules apply.
• You can plan ahead . You must make reservations to visit Haleakala National Park between 3 AM and 7 AM. 
• You want to bike down the mountain. One of Maui’s top activities is biking down Haleakala. Guided tours will drive you to the summit to watch the sunrise, and then you can bike down once it’s daylight. 

Sunrise atop Haleakala is typically more crowded than sunset atop Haleakala.

• You dream of watching the Haleakala sunrise. Maybe you want to be a part of a soul-stirring moment, or perhaps it’s always been on your travel bucket list. You want to join the crowds and witness the start of day from a place that feels on top of the world. If so, a Haleakala sunrise likely won’t disappoint. 

Watch the Haleakala Sunset If:

• You don’t feel like rising early. I get it. You’re on vacation, and you probably want to relax. If you go at sunrise, you’ll need to plan on a 2 to 3-hour drive from your hotel, which means waking up at 3 AM or earlier.  However, if you plan your trip around sunset, you can leave around 2 p.m. and still get there in plenty of time to enjoy the sunset.
• You want to take your time driving there. One of the best ways to enjoy your trip to Haleakala National Park is by making stops along the way. You’ll likely drive through Makawao town, go near the Kula Lavender Farm, and pass by many scenic overlooks. If you go at sunrise, you will be making a direct drive straight to the crater, since nothing will be open that early. 
• You want a little more privacy. Sunrise crowds are typically much heavier than sunset crowds. So, if you want more privacy, waiting until sunrise is the way to go.
• You can’t get a Haleakala sunrise reservation. You don’t need a reservation to visit after 7 AM, so you can go up to watch the sunset without any pre-planning. 
• You want to stargaze . You could see some stars before sunrise if you get to the National Park early enough. But it’s much easier to explore the park in daylight, watch the sunset, and then stick around for stargazing. 

Tips for Watching the Sunrise and Sunset

No matter when you visit Haleakala, there are a few things to prepare for. First of all, make sure to bring warm layers. We like to pack blankets in our cars for when we sit down and watch the sun come up or go down. Also, make sure you have a tank full of gas, along with snacks and drinks. A full picnic dinner is perfect for sunset. 

Also, make sure to plan for time to explore the park during daylight. There’s way more to Haleakala than just the sunrise, and I like to meander around the different pathways and overlooks near the visitor’s center. 

The Story of Haleakala Sunrise

The sunrise at Haleakala is more than just a tourist activity – it’s a phenomenon that dates back to the earliest Hawaiian lore. 

Haleakala means “house of the sun,” and the name has to do with a Hawaiian legend. According to mo‘olelo , the demi-god Maui climbed to the 10,000-foot summit of Haleakala, where the sun was asleep in the giant crater. 

He hid until morning and watched the sun begin his daily journey. As the first ray of sunshine appeared, Maui snared it with his lasso of twisted coconut fiber to make it slow down across the sky. 

The sun demanded to be released, but Maui would not let go. “Promise me that you will move more slowly across the sky,” he told the sun. Left with no choice, the sun struck a bargain and agreed to move more slowly across the sky.

The jury is still out about which sight is more spectacular:  Sunrise or Sunset at Haleakala. You’ll find folks who say they’re equally beautiful. Others will say one or the other is more picturesque.

Tampa re-opens rental assistance program applications

TAMPA, Fla. — For the sixth time since March 2022, the city of Tampa has opened its rental assistance program to help families secure stable housing. Nearly $3.1 million has been allocated to cover costs such as security deposits, initial and final month’s rent and monthly rental assistance for up to one year.

Around 1,800 families benefited from the assistance during the last cycle, including a local veteran and his family.

Combat veteran Marcos Morales fell on hard times after transitioning out of the military. He lacked stable housing until he was linked to the City of Tampa’s rental assistance program.

“It’s a huge relief,” said Morales. “Rent is going up and, you know, you got to have like four or five people just so they can afford rent. And what happens if somebody else leaves? Somebody else is going to have to cover that.”

Morales moved into his new townhome about a month ago.

“For now, it’s a start,” he said. “Its been a long journey.”

Since the program’s launch, the City of Tampa has awarded over $9.5 million in rental assistance.

The program helps renters who earn up to 140% of the Area Median Income (AMI).

A four-person household making $70,000 would be considered at 50-80% AMI and could qualify for a maximum assistance of $7,500 total, or $625 per month.

Between February and April this year, the RMAP program helped:

• 51 people who were homeless,
• 35 disabled individuals,
• 29 senior citizens,
• 211 families with minor children.

Marcos says his children and newfound love have encouraged him to keep going.

“I’m taking it day by day,” said Marcos. “I appreciate life more. I appreciate it a lot.”

The city will accept 25 eligible applications every Tuesday and Thursday until the funding limit is reached. For an application, visit the following link: tampa.gov/rmap .

Lava caused the night sky to glow orange over part of Hawaii early Monday morning as the Kilauea volcano erupted. Over 90 earthquakes have also been reported.

A Hawaiian volcano that last erupted nine months ago roared back to life early in the morning of June 3.

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupted to life early Monday morning with lava oozing out of the ground and causing the sky to glow eerily orange.

The eruption began around 12:30 a.m. HST on Monday, June 3, in a region that hasn't erupted since December 1974. The eruption nearly 50 years ago was short-lived, lasting only around six hours.

The eruption was accompanied by a swarm of earthquakes with at least 92 tremors of at least magnitude 2.5 around the Big Island of Hawaii from Sunday morning through Monday morning, according to the USGS.

By late Monday, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) said the eruption had paused , but it "could change quickly" at any point. "Fissure eruptions are often short-lived but can be difficult to forecast. They can display pauses of hours to days." The eruption took place in a remote area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and did not immediately threaten human life or critical infrastructure.

A camera at the Keck Observatories perched atop Mauna Kea on the Big Island captured an image of the eruption early Monday morning with the glow of the lava appearing like a sunrise on the horizon.

"Residents and visitors should stay informed and follow County of Hawai‘i and HawaiÊ»i Volcanoes National Park guidelines," the HVO said.

Disney Announces Major Cruise Line Expansion with 4 New Ships

Disney Cruise Line will add the new ships to its fleet by 2031.

Disney Cruise Line plans to add four new ships in the coming years, bringing its total fleet size to 13.

The new ships, which Disney announced as part of its D23 event this weekend, will arrive between 2027 and 2031. Disney said the names of the new ships, their design, and where they would sail were still in development.

“At Disney Experiences, Imagineers dream, create, design and build these stories into real places… everything we’re going to share with you is in active development,” Josh D’Amaro, the chairman of Disney Experiences, said in a statement. “Plans are drawn. Dirt is moving.”

In addition to the newly announced ships, Disney currently operates five ships and is planning on adding four more in the near future, including the Disney Destiny , which the company plans to launch in 2025. That ship will feature a heroes and villains theme along with recently-announced new restaurants like a “The Lion King”-themed spot complete with windows that transition from sunrise to sunset as you eat, tiered risers made to look like African drums, live musicians and storytellers, and favorite songs like the “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata.”

The company is also preparing for the launch of the Disney Treasure , which is set to hit the high seas late this year. Over the weekend, D’Amaro detailed a new onboard stage production all about “Moana” on the ship, which will feature a larger-than-life 15-foot-tall puppet version of the fiery Te Kā.

“I’ve had a chance to see this in person, and it is stunning,” D’Amaro said, adding the puppet was “the largest we’ve ever produced for a Disney Cruise Line show.” 

Currently, Disney sails to the Caribbean, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Alaska, Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, Australia, and beyond.

In addition to large ocean cruises , Disney operates a series of expedition and river cruises through its Adventures by Disney brand.

"The viewpoint provides a 360-degree vista, particularly stunning at sunrise when the mist fills the valleys," according to Mixbook.

The Nashville skyline also made the list at No. 60. with the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge offering one of the best views of the city.

"The viewpoint from the middle of the bridge provides a perfect spot to capture the skyline reflected in the Cumberland River, especially beautiful at twilight," Mixbook states.

Best places to take photographs in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

There are many beautiful locations in Tennessee and the Knoxville area to explore or visit for capturing captivating photos, but few locations can compete with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Here are some of the best places to take photographs in the park.

• Cades Cove: Considered the most popular spot in the Great Smoky Mountains, this area contains rolling meadows, elevated valleys and an enjoyable 11-mile loop that should provide great photo opportunities. Black bears and deer are not uncommon sights at this location and could be great for animal photographers.
• Mount LeConte: This is the third highest peak in the national park at 6,593 feet, and because of its height offers some of the best photographic views of the Great Smoky Mountains. You'll find mountain ranges and beautiful 360-degree views. There is also LeConte Lodge at the peak, ready for a chance to star in a photo gallery - if you're game to make the hike there.
• Little River: The winding road follows along the river itself with several areas to pull off and take photos in the heart of the forest. Little River offers great opportunities for photos of the river and of nature.
• Newfound Gap: This area is easily accessible with wonderful views; as you drive through you'll notice multiple places to pull off for those stunning photographs. The views here are some of the most breathtaking that can be found in the national park, featuring mountain peaks, valleys and rivers.

The first World Photography Day took place on Aug. 19, 2010, with roughly 270 photographers from around the world sharing their photographs and pictures in an online photo gallery.
