Parc du Mont-Royal is a beautiful hilltop park offering hiking trails and spectacular views of the city

The city of Montreal derives its name from Mount Royal, the large hill that overlooks Montreal Island and the Saint Lawrence River. Spread out over the hill is Parc du Mont-Royal, the most famous of Montreal's parks. From the upper portions you can enjoy unsurpassed views of the city and its surroundings.

The mountain is technically more of a large hill with a total of three peaks ranging in height from 659-754 feet above sea level. Covering an area just shy of 500 acres, the park offers visitors a wide range of activities. From spring through autumn visitors can enjoy walking or hiking on the many paths and taking in the beautiful vistas of the Montreal Skyline and beyond. Paddle boats can be rented at the small lake. During the winter months you can still walk or hike, but you can also enjoy cross-country skiing, ice skating on Beaver Lake or tubing and tobogganing on the toboggan runs. Equipment rentals are available. For a real workout try climbing the Mount Royal Stairs, 400 wooden steps up the mountain starting from the corner of Peel Street and Pine Avenue.

The park is beautiful anytime of the year, but is particularly well known for the colourful displays of foliage throughout its mixed forests during autumn.

A prominent feature of the park is the giant 103 foot cross that sits atop the hill. Brilliant LED lighting make it especially prominent at night. The lights are normally white, but the color can be changed for special occasions. The current cross was erected in 1924, but its roots go all the way back to 1643 when the first cross was erected to fulfill a vow made by the city's founder, Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve, when praying to Virgin Mary to prevent a threatening flood.

There are a couple of popular lookouts on the hill. The largest is Belvedere Kondiaronk which was built in 1906. It sits in front of the historic Chalet du Mont-Royal, a magnificent stone building constructed as a 'make work project' during the Great Depression which served as a venue for Big Band concerts throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Today the Chalet can be reserved for major provincial, national or international events providing they do not interfere with the ability of visitors to access the park and the lookout. When the Chalet is not being used for a special event, you can visit the cafeteria for snacks and refreshments. The rustic interior features exposed wood beams and a stone fireplace. Original paintings illustrating the history of Montreal hang from the walls. The other belvedere, a bit of a lovers point, looks east toward Olympic Park.

During the summer season you can ride a free shuttle bus between Laurier Metro Station and the Belvedere Kondiaronk lookout. The 804 Shuttle operates every 30 minutes. Scroll down to the directions section below for more details.

The greenspace of Mount Royal is further extended along the western flank by two expansive cemeteries; Mont-Royal and Cote-des-Neiges and on the northeast by Parc Jeanne-Mance which has a soccer field, baseball diamonds and tennis courts. Dining in the park is available in the Pavilion located by Beaver Lake where you can choose from a cafeteria or formal dining room.

How to get to Parc du Mont-Royal by Metro

By Metro and Free Shuttle Bus: From mid June until mid September STM offers free shuttle bus service between Laurier Metro Station and the Kondiaronk Belevedere lookout. The Route 804 Shuttle operates every 30 minutes with departures from Laurier Metro Station between 9 am and 12:30 pm.

By Metro and Bus: Take Metro Line 2 to Station Mont-Royal and catch bus 11-O (West) at stop 54005 on the east side of the station. The first stop in the park is by a lookout that provides some nice views to the east. There is a hiking trail that starts from the south end of the parking area located at the stop. The bus makes 2 more stops along the park before looping around at the other end close to Beaver Lake and the Pavilion which is another good place to disembark and begin exploring.

By Metro and Hiking: if you feel like a good workout, you can take Metro Line 1 to Peel Station; exit and walk (northwest) up Peel Street to the steps at the base of Mount Royal where you can climb up the 400 steps (9 minutes to the start of the climb). Le deuxième point que vous pouvez visiter sur le Mont Royal est un immense cimetière, vous pouvez le visiter en voiture, mais je vous recommande fortement de prendre vos deux jambes pour profiter de la splendeur du paysage. C’est l’endroit où ont été enterrés certains des plus grands hommes du Québec, ainsi que des joueurs de hockey et de grandes stars de la télévision.

Vous pouvez marcher pendant des heures dans cette immense lieu même si vous êtes entouré de morts, vous apprécierez la promenade, je vous le garantie. L’endroit ferme c’est la porte à 16h30 alors assurez-vous d’être dehors à l’heure prévue et de ne pas rester coincé toute la nuit dans le cimetière le plus populaire de Montréal.

Cet endroit est très bien entretenu, c’est probablement le meilleur cimetière que j’ai visité de ma vie. Assurez-vous d’avoir de bonnes chaussures, car le cimetière est immense et vous pouvez marcher pendant des heures à cet endroit. Si vous voulez être tranquille à Montréal, je pense que c’est l’endroit idéal. C’est le plus grand cimetière de Montréal.

Le chalet de la Montagne du Mont Royal

Juste en face du cimetière, la belle promenade à pied ou à vélo jusqu’au chalet de la place Mont-Royal, au plus haut niveau de la montagne. Vous pouvez également regarder la vue magnifique sur le grandiose balcon et la vue sur le fleuve Saint-Laurent, ainsi que tous les plus grands audacieux gratte-ciel de Montréal.

Le Lac Aux Castor

La montagne offre également un immense parc et un grand lac avec plusieurs espèces d’oiseaux. En hiver, vous pouvez patiner sur le lac et patiner sur le lac gratuitement.

À côté du lac, il y a un très joli petit restaurant qui vend de la nourriture ou des boissons. C’est l’endroit idéal pour savourer un peu de thé ou de café avec une vue imprenable sur la faune canadienne qui vient visiter également le grand lac du Mont-Royal.

Le restaurant propose un menu composé de plats typiquement québécois. Un endroit à essayer si vous n’apportez pas de pique-nique sur le Mont Royal. Bien sûr, si c’est l’hiver, vous devriez vous arrêter à cet endroit pour vous réchauffer et être prêt à affronter l’hiver du Québec par la suite.

La montagne vous propose également de faire tous les itinéraires en forêt ainsi que sur les routes goudronnées à vélo. Il y a plus de 20 kilomètres de sentier sans compter toutes les routes que vous pouvez faire sur le Mont Royal ou la promenade que vous pouvez faire au cimetière. Évidemment, il y a des routes plus difficiles que d’autres. Assurez-vous de disposer du bon équipement pour cette tâche.

There are two mont royal hiking trails: via the stairs and around Olmsted Trail.

This information is in regards to hiking mount royal Montreal via the stairs and NOT using the switchbacks around the Montreal mountain.

Easy Montreal Hike – How to Hike Mont Royal Montreal

How to get to starting point to climb mont royal.

By metro: Take Line 1 to Peel Metro Station which is the closest to Mount Royal Park Montreal. From here, follow Peel Street to the path at the Uni.

By foot: Wherever you come from, if you head toward Downtown Montreal (where the skyscrapers and central station is) before getting to Old Montreal, you will pass the entrance to McGill University.

By bus: Bus number 11 will take you to the entrance of the Uni near Tim Hortons (classic Canada).

Directions for Mount Royal Lookout

Walk the length of the path within the McGill University grounds towards the main building and bear left.

Join a slightly inclined road so the main building is on your right.

Cross the road until you get to Pine Avenue West and Peel Street intersection and cross at the traffic lights.

This is the beginning of the hike up Mont Royal at the stairs or turn right to follow Olmsted Trail.

Either follow every set of stairs you can see on this route as you go up or follow the switchbacks on Olmsted.

You’ll see many more stairs like this:

But the views start coming!

Continue on the path until you see the large building at the observatory.

Directions for Finding the Mont Royal Cross

Continuing the mont royal montreal walk, you will want to the find croos.

From the lookout, turn your back to the city to look at the main building.

Follow the path to the left of the building (so the building is on your right).

This is the start of the circular loop that, if you keep following it, you will get back to the lookout spot.

After 20 minutes, you will find a small path that you can take to the right that will get you next to the cross.

Then you can either turn back on yourself to get back to the mount royal Montreal lookout or you can continue the trail to get you there quicker and to complete the loop.

Woo, you have completed the Mount Royal hike!

What Is The Montreal Cross?

The Mount Royal also known as Croix du Mont Royal sits at the top of the hill overlooking the city. It has been there, in one form or another, since the 1600s, starting as a wooden cross that the founder of Montreal placed there as a vow if the city survived flooding. Which it did.

Today it is made of steel, stands at 98 feet and covered in LED lighting.

Mount Royal Park

Inaugurated in 1876, the Mount Royal Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. It is an ideal site for admiring a wide variety of plants and birds or for enjoying outdoor activities. Les amis de la montagne offer a variety of services and activities, including a permanent exhibition at Smith House. The Mount Royal Chalet is decorated with pictures tracing the history of Montréal, including many painted by famous artists. In front, the Kondiaronk scenic offers a striking view of the downtown area and the St. Lawrence River. Erected in 1924, the cross (30 metres) atop Mount Royal commemorates January 6, 1643, when Maisonneuve, Montréal's founder, kept his promise to carry a wooden cross to the summit if the young colony survived flooding.
