If you’ve ever started reading an article on your iPhone only to have to drive somewhere, walk, bike, do chores, or otherwise take your eyes off the screen — ElevenLabs has an app for you.

The AI audio creation company founded by former Palantir engineers today launched its first iOS app, “ElevenLabs Reader: AI Audio.”

Today we’re launching the ElevenLabs iOS app! It lets you listen to any article, book, or doc using our AI generated voices. Check it out ? pic.twitter.com/zQ9ISG8NUn — Ammaar Reshi (@ammaar) June 25, 2024

Unlike the full ElevenLabs website which contains a variety of different AI models and features including text-to-speech, converting speech into other voices and languages, AI dubbing, and AI sound effects, the new ElevenLabs iOS app is more narrowly tailored and focused specifically on converting text files or links from the web into audio narration that the user can listen to while on the go, or doing something else with their eyes and hands, e.g. barbecuing, making dinner, putting away the dishes, etc.

Initially, this text-to-speech functionality will only be available in English on the app, though a pop over screen suggests that the full 29+ languages ElevenLabs supports on the web will also be making their way to its iOS Reader app soon.

The app is available for free download through the Apple App Store and requires iOS 15 or newer versions of the software.

It requires you to sign in with an existing ElevenLabs account or create a new one with your email and password or using your Google or Apple account to log in.

Once you do log in, you’re presented with a list of pre-loaded text files with accompanying audio narration, most of which appear to be fairy tales and folklore stories already in the public domain such as Cinderella, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic Victorian mystery series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

safari 11 labs

Tapping any of these stories pulls up the text and immediately begins the voiceover AI narration, with a green interactive highlighter following along and highlighting each word spoken by the AI narrator.

safari 11 labs

Of course, most of us busy adults have other things we need to read besides fairy tales, so there’s also a plus button in the upper right hand corner of the app’s main menu that the user can click on and pull up a menu to “Add content” of their own, including writing their own text, importing a URL that they’ve copied and pasted from their mobile web browser, or a file from the iOS files app.

safari 11 labs

The app also integrates with the iOS default Share Sheet, so the user can add a widget in the share sheet of their iOS Safari browser and share links from the browser view to the ElevenLabs iOS Reader app while they’re browsing, without having to copy and paste.

Tapping the 1.0x default speed indicator in the lower right hand corner of the app allows the user to increase or decrease the speed between 0.8x and 2x. However, you can’t select these speeds from a dropdown or scroll menu — instead you just have to tap to cycle through each one, one at a time, which could be a little annoying for some users.

Tapping the soundwave icon in the left icon allows the user to choose from 11 (natch) different voices and accents, from male to female, American to Austrian to British English.

Uploading a PDF file with visuals and graphics from my iOS Files app to the ElevenLabs iOS Reader app took a few seconds in my testing, and the app stripped out all the visuals, displaying only text. It also had some issues with formatting that made the narration slightly award — pausing at inopportune moments to the line breaks.

I also encountered a couple random error messages and failures to convert text to audio in my brief testing.

However, the app is brand new and will no doubt be improved rapidly. And the actual functionality of AI voiceover narration was surprisingly fluid overall and incredibly accurate and compelling. It even worked on VentureBeat articles and a full novel manuscript of 300+ pages.

One big question is whether ElevenLabs captures all/any of the text data and files a user submits to the app, stores them somewhere (and if so, whether that is encrypted and private storage), and/or trains on the files a user pastes or uploads. We’ve reached out to the company for an answer and will update when we hear back.

Voice AI startup ElevenLabs gains unicorn status after latest fundraising -source

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

By Krystal Hu

(Reuters) - Artificial intelligence (AI) startup ElevenLabs has gained unicorn status after its latest round of fundraising, a person familiar with the matter said, as surging investor interest for generative AI technology sends startup valuations soaring.

ElevenLabs on Monday said it raised $80 million in Series B funding from investors led by venture capitalist Andreessen Horowitz along with entrepreneurs Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross, with participation from Sequoia Capital among others.

The two-year-old firm did not disclose a valuation but the person said the round valued it at $1.1 billion, making it a unicorn - or billion-dollar startup.

That marks a jump from the $100 million valuation in its previous funding around in 2023, showed data from PitchBook, reflecting expectations for a surge in adoption of AI voice generation by firms as varied as games giants and movie studios.

Headquartered in London, ElevenLabs has developed AI models and tools for creating AI-generated voices with different languages, accents and emotions. It employs about 40 remote workers globally, and plans to expand to 100 by year-end, its chief executive, Mati Staniszewski, told Reuters.

Staniszewski declined to comment on the valuation.

The voice AI firm said its growing customer base consists of individual content creators as well as enterprises such as Storytel, Paradox Interactive and The Washington Post.

Political campaign staff in the United States are using ElevenLabs to reach voters who speak foreign languages, Staniszewski said.

"We'll see more AI content across social media campaigns. The key primitive is make sure that people are aware that it's AI. We are big proponents of being able to detect AI content and trace it back," said Staniszewski.

Its tools include AI Speech Classifier, which helps identify AI-generated audio content. It also has products focused on dubbing for movies, and is developing a marketplace allowing users to generate AI voices and make money by licensing them.

The startup competes with other AI companies including OpenAI, whose ChatGPT popularized generative AI. The Microsoft-backed startup released rival text-to-speech products last year.

"I think the biggest difference is that we ... want to build the research, but also that workflow layer. And for us, this is the focus," said Staniszewski.

how do you download safari 11?

Safari 11 is not a standalone application that you can download.

Safari 11 is part of the macOS High Sierra installation, with minor updates to Safari becoming available with regular updates to that operating system. If you have Sierra 10.12.6, or El Capitan 10.11.6 installed, then you are also eligible to receive Security updates for those two operating systems — that will include Safari 11, and its minor revisions. These will appear in the Mac App Store Updates tab.

I have applied all Security updates after 10.11.6 was released, and now have Safari 11.1.1.

Once macOS Mojave is released, it is likely that El Capitan (10.11.6) Security updates will disappear from the second paragraph.

UPDATE June 2018

You can avoid the bug described in this article by using Safari 11.1 on MacOS 10.13. Because of this, specifying Safari '11.0' AND 'MacOS 10.13' as desired capabilities is no longer an available combination.  Specifying Safari '11' , '11.1' , or not specifying a Safari version along with the MacOS 10.13 platform, will now default to Safari ' 11.1' .

--------------------------------------------

When testing with Safari 11 and Selenium 3.x, you may find that click events on option elements (such as dropdown menus) are not handled correctly, making it appear as if the click does not occur or register correctly.

This is a WebKit bug, not a Sauce Labs bug. You can find details at  https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=174710 . This bug has been fixed, but Apple have yet to fix this in SafariDriver. This has been reported to Apple under bug report number  33459305.

  • Beyond Chrome and Safari: The Best Alternative Web Browsers for 2024

If you stick to Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari, you're missing out on the intriguing extras in the best alternative web browsers.

Michael Muchmore

Colibri Browser

Opera

Tor Browser

Vivaldi

Large tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft promote their  web browsers  on their devices and operating systems, but you don't have to use them. Alternative web browsers—many you may not have heard of before—give you unique and interesting capabilities, such as greater customization, added privacy, and different browsing tools. For example, some have a reading mode that shows you a cleaned-up view of an article so you can focus on the words without distracting ads and videos. That's just one of many examples of how you can benefit from using an alternative browser. Here, you'll find some alternative browsers that are well worth your consideration. If you have a favorite lesser-known browser that’s not listed here, please let us know in the comments section.

You Can Trust Our Reviews

Deeper dive: our top tested picks.

Unlike other web browsers, Arc requires you to sign up with an email account before using it. But that's a small price to pay for its minimalist interface, split window option, and AI assistance. The browser runs on Windows, iOS, and macOS, with a waitlist for the Android version.

It's true that most of what you find in Arc you also find in Edge or other alternative browsers like Vivaldi, but it's a different take on the web browser that appeals to some users. The interface has a collapsible side panel for tabs rather than tabs across the top, like most desktop browsers. Buttons for your favorites rest on the top of the sidebar, and you can group tabs into custom folders. You also get a Spaces feature that resembles Edge's Workspaces. You can send Arc Spaces to a contact, but they're not collaborative like Edge's.

The browser's AI Arc Max feature sends certain browsing activity to OpenAI and Anthropic for features like summarizing webpages, answering general knowledge questions, or suggesting activities. Arc ships with uBlock, one of the best ad blockers you can get, though The Browser Company, which makes Arc, doesn't highlight special privacy features like Brave and some other alternative browsers do. The browser is free, and the company says it doesn't sell any of your data.

Bottom Line:

Colibri has a truly different take on the web browser: It has no tabs! You need to sign up for a free account with an email to use it, however. Minimalists will love Colibri's pared-down interface, which dispenses with all the doodads and whirligigs found in today's leading browsers. It shows just six buttons at the top: Back, Forward, Reload, Add to Links, Web Search, and Toggle View.

When you log in, your saved links, lists, and feeds appear. Instead of opening sites in new tabs, you get a choice of a new window or replacing the current window's contents. The Toggle view shows your pinned site links in tiles for easy access. Colibri blocks third-party trackers, ads, and malicious hosts, but don't expect extensions or other extras. If less is more for you, then Colibri is your browser. The HTML5Test website reports that Colibri has a high level of website compatibility, but the EFF's Cover Your Tracks tool reports that it doesn't protect you from tracking, so caveat emptor.

One of my favorite features in Maxthon is its Resource Sniffer. It lets you find and download pictures, videos, music, and other files that are part of the webpage you're visiting. Another standout option, Split Screen, has been slow to appear in standard browsers like Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. It also has synchronizable notes, a password saver, and built-in screenshot capabilities. Like Opera, Maxthon has a customizable left button rail for notes, favorites, RSS feeds, and so forth. I also like the built-in screenshot tool and a Night Mode that turns web pages black with white text to save your eyes during late-night web reading.

Maxthon's documentation claims it doesn't do any tracking of your browsing. You have the option to install a free VPN called BrightVPN at installation. Unlike the proxy built into Opera, this one is a full VPN, cloaking all internet traffic to your device. Finally, Maxthon boasts a built-in blockchain wallet option for Web3 compatibility, but you can find those in Brave and Opera, or add one as an extension in just about any other browser.

Opera  has been an alternative browser since before several of the current leaders in the category existed. Its developers are responsible for introducing many standard features we now take for granted, including tabs, built-in search, a pop-up blocker, and page zooming. Not all of Opera’s novel developments have lasted the test of time, which says something about its willingness to try something unconventional. For example, Opera formerly let you use it as a server so that you could host your own photo galleries or chat rooms and access them from anywhere.

Opera is the first browser with a built-in (and very good) VPN, a cryptocurrency wallet, and built-in ad blocking. The Opera Flow feature takes syncing between mobile a desktop to a new level. The latest? Opera has announced integration with ChatGPT , starting with a Shorten summarization feature.

Though ad blocking isn’t turned on by default in Opera you can get it by checking the option called “Block ads and surf the web up to three times faster.” Like many browser alternatives, Opera runs on top of the Chromium code base, which powers Chrome, so you’re unlikely to run into site incompatibilities.

  • Built-in ad blocker, VPN, and battery saver.
  • Fast performance.
  • Helpful Speed Dial start page.
  • Turbo mode speeds up slow connections, reduces data usage.
  • Gestures for easy navigation.
  • Some sites balk at an unrecognized browser.
  • No reading mode or reading list.
  • Lacks social sharing tool.

Tor is more than a browser; it’s a complete privacy software stack. Tor traffic is not only encrypted, but also forwarded to multiple nodes, with each successively encrypting it again. At the end your traffic is inside multiple layers, like those of an onion. Hence the name Tor, which stands for  the onion router.  Private Tor sites even use the .onion extension. Those sites make up what's known colloquially as the dark web .

The browser itself is based on Firefox, with some privacy extensions and settings locked, so standard websites display just fine inside this private browsing space. The big downside is all that routing and encryption slow down your browsing considerably. Despite that, it's the ultimate tool for people in repressive countries who need to circumvent internet filtering or those who simply demand privacy and anonymity. For even more of that, you can set it up so that the ISP doesn't know you're using it by using a bridge relay or by running it in Tails , a portable OS you run from a USB key. If you don't want to install extra software, Brave (see entry above) offers a built-in Tor private browsing option.

  • Easily connects to the Tor anonymizing network
  • Simple interface for complex security tools
  • Feature-rich browser
  • Integrated privacy tools
  • Slows down browsing
  • Finding localized websites can be difficult
  • Some privacy features may be confusing to novice users

Coming from one of the creators of the Opera browser, Vivaldi has customization galore and has garnered passionate fans among the technorati. It’s based on the Chromium open source browser code that’s managed by Google and used in its Chrome browser. You can enable, disable, and tweak every minute aspect of the browser. Vivaldi resembles Opera in using a tile-based start page, tab previews, mouse gestures, and a side rail of buttons for frequent actions like note-taking, downloads, history, and favorites.

What’s Up: August 2024 Skywatching Tips from NASA

What to look for:

A planetary rendezvous, meteors, and a "star forge"!

Two planets meet for a super close conjunction, the Perseid meteor shower peaks, and look for the Lagoon Nebula – a stellar nursery in Sagittarius.

  • August 4 – New moon
  • August 11 – The Perseid meteor shower peaks overnight tonight! Provided you have clear skies, viewing conditions will be favorable this year, as the Moon sets by around 11:30 pm local time. Meteor activity picks up from then until dawn.
  • August 14 – Jupiter and Mars have an extremely close pair-up called a conjunction this morning. They'll appear just a third of a degree apart, which is less than the width of the full Moon. Find them in the eastern sky in the couple of hours before sunrise.
  • August 19 – Full moon
  • August 20 – The Moon chases Saturn across the sky tonight. The pair rise in the east shortly after dark, and trek toward the west together until dawn.
  • August 27 –  This morning the crescent moon joins Mars and Jupiter to form a captivating trio. Look for them in the east in the hour or so before sunrise.
  • All month – You can use binoculars or a telescope to observe the Lagoon Nebula all month in the first few hours after dark. It's located in the constellation Sagittarius near the star pattern known as "The Teapot." Similar in size and brightness to the Orion Nebula, it's a cauldron of star formation located about 4,000 light years away.

An illustrated sky chart shows the morning sky facing eastward, 1 hour before sunrise on August 14, 2024. Jupiter and Mars are pictured as small white dots very close together near center. Jupiter appears larger than Mars, indicating its greater brightness. Several other bright stars appear nearby in the sky.

What's Up for August? A super close meetup of Jupiter and Mars, the outlook for the Perseid meteors, and see a stellar nursery in the Lagoon Nebula.

During the month of August, the Red Planet, Mars, speeds past our solar system's largest planet, Jupiter, in the a.m. sky. They have an extremely close pair-up, called a conjunction, on August 14th, when they'll appear just a third of a degree apart, which is less than the width of the full Moon.

The view from NASA's Eyes on the Solar System reveals the two planets arranged along the same line of sight, which is why they appear so close together in the sky at this time.

Mars quickly pulls away from Jupiter over the following mornings, but on the 27th, the crescent moon joins the two planets to form a captivating trio in the morning sky.

An illustrated sky chart shows the morning sky facing eastward, 1 hour before sunrise on August 17, 2024. The crescent Moon is at center, surrounded by several bright stars and planets. Jupiter and Mars are pictured as small white dots, with Jupiter immediately to the right of the Moon. Mars is directly below the Moon. Jupiter appears larger than Mars, indicating its greater brightness.

Saturn flies solo most of the month on the opposite side of the sky, though the Moon chases close behind the Ringed Planet on August 20th. The pair rise shortly after dark, and trek toward the west together until dawn.

The warm summer nights of August in the Northern Hemisphere make the Perseid meteor shower an annual favorite. This year's peak night for Perseids comes on August 11th, and into morning twilight on the 12th. Provided you have clear skies, viewing conditions will be favorable this year, as the Moon sets by around 11:30 pm local time.

Meteor activity picks up from then until dawn. From darker viewing locations, meteor counts of 50 to 75 per hour are pretty normal at the peak.

The Perseids appear to originate from a place in the sky that rises in the northeast, so lie back and face roughly in that direction, but try to take in as much of the sky as you can in your view, as meteors can appear all over.

All the stars in the sky share a common origin in giant clouds of gas and dust called nebulas. And one such stellar nursery, the Lagoon Nebula, is well placed to observe in the August sky.

An illustrated sky chart shows the night sky facing southward around 9:30 pm in August. The Location of the Lagoon Nebula is circled below center. Below and to the right is the constellation Scorpius, and to its left is the Teapot asterism.

Finding the Lagoon Nebula

August 2024

The Lagoon Nebula will feel familiar to you if you've ever observed the Orion Nebula – with the latter being just a bit brighter. Being about three times wider than the full moon, it's still relatively easy to find, even under suburban skies, with binoculars or a small telescope.

The Lagoon Nebula is located in the constellation Sagittarius, which regular skywatchers will know is synonymous with the faintly glowing band of the Milky Way core. You'll find it here, just above the top of the star pattern known as the Teapot.

The nebula is located about 4,000 light years away. Its oblong structure is about 100 light years long by about 50 light years wide. It's a cauldron of intense star forming activity, with many young stars blazing brightly, causing the surrounding gas to glow. That glow is faint and colorless when peering at the Lagoon Nebula through binoculars, but long-exposure photos reveal its colorful nature. The bright stars are also sculpting the nebula, creating voids and turbulent knots and streamers of gas. The nebula gets its name from one of these dense, dark clouds that stretches across its middle, looking something like a watery lagoon.

The Lagoon Nebula appears high overhead in August for those in the Southern Hemisphere, and quite low for those at higher northern latitudes, but it's visible throughout the lower 49 United States. If you can locate the stars in the Teapot, you should be able to observe the nebula too. To find it, follow a line toward the west, twice the distance from the top of the Teapot's handle to the top of its lid.

Nebulas can be challenging to observe, even with a telescope. But with its large size and relative brightness, the Lagoon Nebula offers a great opportunity to see one of these star forges for yourself in August.

Here are the phases of the Moon for August.

The main phases of the Moon are illustrated in a horizontal row, with the new moon on August 4th, first quarter on August 12th, full moon on August 19th, and the third quarter moon on August 26th

History of Bryansk Oblast

Various Slavic tribes (Northerners, Vyatichi) inhabited the territory of the present Bryansk region since ancient times. In the 9th century, the local Slavic tribes, as well as other neighboring tribes, were dependent on the Khazar Khanate. In the 10th century, they gradually came under the authority of Kiev.

In 1246, after the Mongol invasion, Bryansk Principality was founded. In 1500, Bryansk was captured by troops of Ivan III and the region became part of the Moscow State, its south-western outpost in the fight against Lithuania, Poland and the Crimean Khanate.

In the 18th-19th centuries, the economic development of the region began, the first factories were opened. In August-October 1941, the region was occupied by German troops. Soon it became known for its fierce resistance to the invaders. There were about 60 thousand partisans in the Bryansk forests. July 5, 1944, Bryansk oblast was formed.

Russia says troops are fighting to push back Ukrainian forces after cross-border Kursk incursion

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian troops are battling to push back Ukrainian forces from the Kursk region on the third day of one of the largest cross-border incursions of the war, the Russian Defense Ministry said Thursday.

A ministry statement said the Russian military and border guards have blocked Ukrainian forces from pushing deeper into the region in southwestern Russia. It added that the army is attacking Ukrainian fighters trying to advance into the area from Ukraine’s Sumy region.

“Attempts by individual units to break through deep into the territory in the Kursk direction are being suppressed,” the ministry said.

Ukrainian troops had advanced as much as 15 kilometers (9 miles) into Russian territory, according to the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank. The data that hasn’t been officially confirmed.

WATCH: How Ukraine is achieving success using U.S. weapons in Russian-occupied region of Crimea

Kyiv has not commented on the incursion. In a video address to the nation late Thursday, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not mention the fighting in the Kursk region but emphasized that “Russia brought the war to our land, and it should feel what it has done.”

“Ukrainians know how to achieve their goals,” Zelenskyy said, adding that he received three “productive reports, exactly the kind our country needs now” on Thursday from the commander of Ukraine’s armed forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Russia says the military has stemmed Ukrainian advances in the border area about 500 kilometers (about 320 miles) southwest of Moscow, but military bloggers and open source data indicate Ukrainian troops have made gains in several areas in Kursk.

The Kursk region’s acting governor, Alexei Smirnov, briefed Russian President Vladimir Putin on conditions there by video link Thursday. Smirnov said the region plans to equip gas stations with electronic warfare units and to provide them with unspecified armored defense.

Kursk regional authorities reported Wednesday that at least five civilians, including two ambulance workers, were killed. Russia’s Health Ministry said 66 civilians, including nine children, have been wounded in the Kursk region in the three days of fighting.

Putin, who described the incursion as a “large-scale provocation” that involved “indiscriminate shelling of civilian buildings, residential houses and ambulances” was briefed on the situation by his top military and security officials on Wednesday.

Gen. Valery Gerasimov, the chief of the Russian military’s General Staff, told Putin via video link that about 100 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in the battle and more than 200 others were wounded.

It wasn’t possible to independently verify the Russian claims. During the war, now in its third year, disinformation and propaganda have played a central role.

WATCH: How the U.S. government is trying to crack down on Russian disinformation online

John Kirby, the White House’s national security spokesman, declined to comment on the operation and said the Biden administration has reached out to the Ukrainians to better understand the situation.

The cross-border foray would be among Ukraine’s largest since Russia launched its full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022.

Kyiv’s aim could be to draw Russian reserves to the area, potentially weakening Moscow’s offensive operations in several parts of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, where Russian forces have increased attacks and are advancing gradually toward operationally significant gains.

But it could risk stretching outmanned Ukrainian troops further along the front line, which is more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) long.

Even if Russia were to commit reserves to stabilize the new front, given its vast manpower and the relatively small number of Ukrainian forces engaged in the operation, it would likely have little long-term impact. Pulling units from the front line to stabilize the Kursk region would also be time consuming.

However, the operation could boost Ukrainian morale at a time when Kyiv’s forces are facing relentless Russian attacks, with more expected in the coming weeks.

Myhailo Podolyak, a top adviser to Zelenskyy, said Thursday that border region attacks will cause Russia to “start to realize that the war is slowly creeping inside of Russian territory.” He also suggested such an operation would improve Kyiv’s hand in the event of negotiations with Moscow.

“When will it be possible to conduct a negotiation process in the way that we can push them or get something from them? Only when the war is not going on according to their scenarios,” he said.

Several Ukrainian brigades stationed along the border region would not comment, along with Ukraine’s Defense Ministry and General Staff.

Russian forces have swiftly repelled previous cross-border incursions, but not before they caused damage and embarrassed authorities.

Responsibility for previous incursions into Russia’s Belgorod and Bryansk regions has been claimed by two murky groups: the Russian Volunteer Corps and the Freedom of Russia Legion, made up of Russian citizens and have fought alongside Ukrainian forces.

The Kursk region’s border with Ukraine is 245 kilometers (150 miles) long, making it possible for saboteur groups to launch swift incursions and capture some ground before Russia deploys reinforcements.
