BACKPACKING EUROPE: How to Plan Your Dream Euro Tour on a Budget

BACKPACKING EUROPE: How to Plan Your Dream Euro Tour on a Budget

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

I’m writing this at four in the morning. Wrapped in a thick blanket and sipping a cup of tea, I have given up on catching some sleep tonight. I seem to have left my mind in Europe, unable to adjust. Every time I close my eyes, I am bombarded with an endless succession of wonderful memories from our Euro trip. I still can’t believe two months went by that quickly. It feels like it was just yesterday. It’s been a week but I still look at prices and count in euro. It’s been a week but it’s like I could still sense the sweet scent of truffle and waffles. Water tastes like beer. Or wine.

It’s been a week since we wrapped up our two-month backpacking journey around Europe, the first of three Euro trips that we’ve been planning for the next couple of years in an effort to visit all countries in Europe. On this leg, we visited 16 countries. It took careful, meticulous planning because we wanted to do as much as we could within the short time the embassy allowed.

As soon as we announced we were in Europe, our inbox was flooded with inquiries asking for more details. We promised to share our full itinerary and cost in a blog post. Well, ladies and gentlemen, this post is NOT it. Not yet. We’ll share the details of our entire two months in another post soon. In the meantime, we’ll tell you HOW we planned our trip and HOW you can plan yours, instead of simply posting our itinerary. Here are the reasons for that:

  • We all have different dreams and tastes. There are items in our bucket list that may not be in yours. There are experiences we would love to try but you wouldn’t even dare.
  • We all have different budget and time restrictions. We were allowed to stay in Europe by the German embassy for 60 days. Initially, we wanted to stay longer —- our original plan is 3 months! —- but our budget forced us to trim it down to just 2.
  • If you have a bigger or smaller budget and your dream destinations vary greatly from ours, there really is no point in simply sharing our itinerary. Besides, planning a trip to Europe goes beyond simply building an itinerary. There are a lot of things to consider. The cost of living, climate, language, and the culture in general vary from country to country, which will all affect your preparation.

Anyway, here’s the method we took in order to successfully fulfill our dream European adventure, presented as a step-by-step guide!

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

1. Determine your budget.

First things first: How much is your budget?

Your budget will dictate how long you can stay in Europe, where you will be staying, and what places you can visit.

Let’s assume that you have a P135,000 budget for this trip.

Immediately, let’s subtract P30,000 from your budget for your airfare. Trust me, you can find roundtrip fares for many major cities in Europe for less than P30,000 if you book in advance.

philippines europe tour

2. Determine WHEN you want to go.

The summer months of June-August are considered high season (peak season) in most parts of Europe. Because of the sunshiny skies, it is the most touristy time of the year. Hence, prices go up! If you’re on a budget, you might want to avoid this and consider the shoulder months of September-November instead.

But the weather isn’t the only thing you need to take into account. Is there any event you would like to experience but can only be enjoyed at certain times of the year? If you would like to experience Oktoberfest, go to Munich in mid-September (but expect the hotel and tour rates to skyrocket)! If you want to see the Northern Lights in the Nordic countries, visit between mid-September to mid-March but consider the moon’s brightness too for greater chances of seeing the aurora.

If you have events you MUST MUST MUST experience, use it as your starting point and work from there.

If you don’t have any, then you can be much more flexible.

3. List down all your must-visits !

Are there any destinations you’ve always dreamed of visiting? Is Paris something you can’t miss? Did you make a vow to attend the papal mass at the Vatican? Are you a big fan of the Sound of Music and you just NEED to see the locations in person?

For this exercise, let’s call them “must-visits.” These are your non-negotiables. Meaning, whatever happens, you HAVE TO make a stop at these cities. These are the reasons you’re traveling to Europe in the first place.

europe-key-cities

List them all down. Don’t edit it yet. It’s easy to travel within Europe, so just write them down and we’ll figure it out later.

For example, let’s say that here are your must-visits:

4. Find out lodging costs.

Cost of accommodations varies greatly from one city to another. For example, hotels in Prague are unbelievably cheap while Reykjavik seems like it wants your soul with your money. There are A LOT of cheap lodging options in Europe. It doesn’t always have to be a full-service hotel. There are no-frills hotels, hostels, dorms, and AirBnB options!

At this point, you should already know if you’re traveling alone or part of a group. This will affect your expenses and accommodation choices significantly.

  • If you’re traveling alone and you’re concerned about the budget, consider booking dorm beds. It’s waaay cheaper than booking a private room. (Even single rooms can be pricey.) It’s also a great way to meet other travelers and make new friends.
  • If you’re a pair, you may consider booking two dorm beds or a private room, depends on the situation. If you’re a duo wanting to meet people, the dorm is still a good choice. If you’re a couple on a romantic getaway or a honeymoon, my god, please get a private room (haha!). Note, though, that in many hostels, the bedrooms may be private but the toilet and bath are sometimes shared. Check the arrangement before booking.
  • If you’re a group of three, know that Triple Rooms are not uncommon in Europe. You may also check their policy on extra person on Double/Twin rooms. It’s a great way to save!

Since by now you have an idea of your travel dates, it’s best to go to Booking.com and check hotel rates per night for your must-visit’s. (Why Booking.com? I’ll explain later below.)

DON’T BOOK YET . Just check the rates first. We’re only budgeting at this point and figuring out the allocations.

But to give you an idea, here are the price ranges for some key cities in Europe for a September-December stay.

CITY DORM (EUR Per Bed) DOUBLE/TWIN (EUR Per Room) Amsterdam 16-55 40+ Barcelona 10-45 44+ Copenhagen 25-30 56+ Florence 10-30 30+ Munich 14-30 51+ Paris 20-25 45+ Prague 5-10 18+ Reykjavik 30-60 79+ Rome 9-25 20+ Zurich 40-60 75+

Decide on how long you would want to stay at each of these stops. Let’s assume you’re staying at each of your must-visits for 5 days and 4 nights and you’re traveling with a friend. That means staying for a total of 12 nights in your must-visit cities, and dividing the room cost by 2.

Using our example above, the following will be your accommodations expenses:

CITY COST PER NIGHT (EUR) NO. OF NIGHTS TOTAL COST (EUR) Paris 55 4 220 Florence 50 4 200 Prague 30 4 120 TOTAL EUR 540 TOTAL PER PERSON EUR 270

That’s PHP 15,000 per person for 12 nights!

Again, these are just for the purpose of budgeting. You can find more affordable options. (AirBnB provides cheaper options!)

Okay, let’s do a recap: Airfare: P30,000 Hotels so far: P15,000 Total so far: P45,000

THEPOORTRAVELERKLOOK

4. Plot your route.

It’s time to build our itinerary!

First, get a map of Europe and mark all your must-visits. In our case, we have marked Paris, Prague and Florence.

Then, look at the nearby areas. Are there any other places that you would want to see? Let’s call these “nice-to-have’s.” They’re not really your must-visit places, but it would be great if you get to see them too if your time and budget allow. If not, it’s okay too. Not the end of the world for you.

I highly recommend considering cities that are along the route connecting your must-visits. For example, if Amsterdam and Paris are in your must-visit list, you’ll find that Brussels (in Belgium) sits comfortably in between! If Copenhagen and Prague are your must-visits, know that Berlin is smack in the middle!

You may also consider going on a day tour to another city. If Vienna is a must-visit for you, it wouldn’t hurt to also check out Bratislava, Slovakia, or Budapest, Hungary. The beauty of this is that you don’t have your bulky, heavy luggage with you.

Let’s use our Paris-Prague-Florence example. To get to Florence from Prague by train, you might want to stop in Vienna, Munich or Zurich! Let’s stay that you spend 3 nights each in Munich and Zurich. And since you’re already in Florence, why not end the trip in Rome? Flights to Manila are cheaper from Rome because it’s a major hub.

Here’s our lodging cost so far:

CITY COST PER ROOM (EUR) NO. OF NIGHTS TOTAL COST (EUR) Paris 55 4 220 Prague 30 4 120 Munich 60 3 180 Zurich 75 3 225 Florence 50 4 200 Rome 35 4 140 TOTAL EUR 1085 TOTAL PER PERSON EUR 542.5

That’s P29,000 per person!

Time for another recap: Airfare: P30,000 Hotels so far: P29,000 Total cost so far: P59,000

5. Reserve hotel/hostel rooms.

If you’re happy with your itinerary, it’s time to reserve the rooms. RESERVE, don’t book yet.

This is why I highly recommend BOOKING.COM . They let you reserve rooms for a long time without charging you a cent. (Just choose properties that are marked with FREE CANCELLATION.) Remember, you don’t have a visa yet. This gives you the flexibility to cancel in case your application get denied or in case you change your mind.

During our trip, we made a number of changes to our itinerary and we were able to modify our bookings without additional cost.

When choosing accommodations, always check the location. You’ll be surprised that there are A LOT of affordable options that are in the city center! Of our 12 hotels on our Euro Trip, only one was far from all the action and that’s because we booked too late (Hello, Zurich!). It’s also wise to pick hotels near the train station.

6. Apply for a visa.

Okay, the hard part: getting a visa.

If you’re traveling within the Schengen Area, you will need a visa.

The Schengen Visa itself is a complicated animal. Let me explain: The Schengen Visa is a travel document that allows the holder to enter any of the 26 states that are part of the Schengen agreement. Think of it as an almost all-access pass to many countries in Europe, eliminating the immigration borders within the Schengen zone and the hassle of having to apply for a visa for each individual country. These are the countries who are part of the Schengen Zone:

But hold your horses. You can’t apply just anywhere. You need to figure out which embassy to lodge your application, and it will depend on the purpose of your trip or your overall European itinerary. The rule is, you should apply at the embassy of the country where you will stay the longest.

In our sample itinerary so far, we will be staying in Italy the longest. This requires you to apply at the Italian Embassy.

All good? Good.

But here’s the thing. The Italian Embassy, along with the Spanish Embassy, is notorious for being extra strict. In my travel circles, the Dutch and German Embassies are widely regarded as the most forgiving and most considerate.

Many applicants would deliberately modify their itineraries in order to stay longer in the Netherlands or Germany. Do I recommend that? Sure! They are beautiful countries! It’s up to you if you will follow the itinerary you submitted to the embassy or not, should it get approved. But my personal recommendation is to be honest to avoid any complications. If you’re applying at the French Embassy, stay the longest in France. Bear in mind that you will be interviewed during the application and they will know if you’re lying. Still, if you change your mind after you get the visa, no one’s stopping you from deviating from your itinerary a little bit.

More info about applying for a Schengen Visa below:

  • via French Embassy
  • via German Embassy
  • via Greek Embassy
  • via Italian Embassy

If you’re visiting countries outside Schengen zone, make sure you have the corresponding visa. Some countries will accept your Schengen visa as long as it allows you multiple entry. Always check with the embassy of that country.

If we stick to our sample itinerary and apply at the Italian Embassy, here are additional fees we need to take into account:

Visa fee : EUR 60 (PHP 3200) Service fee : EUR 26 (PHP 1400) Travel Insurance : EUR (PHP 1500)

Sub-total of all Visa Fees: P6,100

Time for another recap: Airfare: P30,000 Hotels so far: P29,000 Visa fees: P6,100 Total so far: 65,100

7. Book flights, trains, and hotels.

Once your visa is approved, book the flights and hotels that you had reserved!

You might also need to book additional flights. Traveling by air within Europe is cheaper than you think. You’ll find Paris-Rome flights for only P1000 (via Ryan Air), Paris-Barcelona for P1700 (via RyanAir), and Paris-Prague for only P3000 (Czech Airlines). You just need to book in advance.

Consider trains and buses too! In Europe, I prefer the train to the plane for many reasons. First, I don’t need to show up at least an hour before. Second, I don’t need to check in baggage and wait for pickup. Lastly, most main train stations are located at the heart of the city. All these saves me time, effort, and money.

In our sample itinerary, let’s assume that we’re flying from Paris to Prague and then take the train all the way to Rome, making stops along the way.

ROUTE MODE COST (EUR) Paris to Prague Plane 57 Prague to Munich Train 15 Munich to Zurich Train 39 Zurich to Florence Train 28 Florence to Rome Train 19

Subtotal of additional transportation expenses: 158 Euro or P8320

It’s also time to book some attractions and tours. I say SOME because you don’t need to book everything. Book only those that require advance booking like the Eiffel Tower, Vatican tickets, and food tours. For the others, you’ll most likely find cheaper tours when you get to that destination.

Time for another recap: Airfare: P30,000 Hotels so far: P29,000 Visa fees: P6,100 Transportation Expenses: P8320 Total so far: 65,100

8. Allocate money for food and tours.

Food and tours will take the biggest fraction of your budget. To keep our expenses low, what I do is follow this rule:

Keep daily FOOD expenses below EUR 20, and tour expenses below EUR 20.

That’s actually way above our actual cost per day, but it’s better to have a good allowance for possible overspending than to run short.

One of the first things we do when we arrive in the city is hit the supermarket and shop for food: bread, biscuits, fruits, and drinks. It’s so much cheaper than eating out. Your EUR10 here can last for days, even in expensive cities like Zurich, Copenhagen, and Reykjavik. In Paris, there are places where you can buy a whole chicken for EUR5! Yet, we still want to try traditional food! So here’s how we do it:

If you decide to splurge on dinner one day and spend more than EUR20, avoid eating out the next day.

The same applies to activities. The EUR20 per day budget should already include transportation (if any) and miscellaneous expenses (bottle of water, snacks, etc). If you really want to save up, you can skip the guided tours and just do it on your own. There are several city apps that have self-guided walking trails. You may also join FREE walking tours so you only have to worry about the tip.

BUT we like guided tours! It’s the best way to appreciate the sites we visit. We love hearing anecdotes and funny stories about places and important people that we would never have read online or in textbooks. So we follow the same rule:

If you decide to take a guided tour that costs more than EUR 20 one day, do a self-guided walking tour the next day.

This rule has kept us afloat during our stay while still enjoying the best of what the city has to offer.

Again, that’s EUR 20 (PHP1100) per day on food and EUR20 on tours.

So if you’re staying in Europe for 23 days, here’s how it looks: Airfare: P30,000 Hotels so far: P29,000 Visa fees: P6,100 Transportation Expenses: P8320 Food Expenses: P24,200 Tour Expenses: P24,200 TOTAL: P121,820

That gives you an additional P13,180 allowance to cover incidental expenses, city taxes (Rome and Florence) and others we might have missed.

So here’s our final sample itinerary:

DAY STOP ACTIVITY 0 En Route Manila to Paris 1 Paris Le Marais to Latin Quarter, Eiffel Tower 2 Paris Louvre 3 Paris Versailles (Self guided) 4 Paris Champs Elysees (Self-guided) 5 Prague En Route, Check in, Free Time 6 Prague Walking Tour (Self-guided) and River Cruise 7 Prague World War II & Communism Tour 8 Prague Choose another Tour 9 Munich En Route, Check in, Free Time 10 Munich Neuschwanstein Castle (Self-guided) 11 Munich Dachau Tour 12 Zurich En Route, Check In, Free time 13 Zurich Old Town Walking Tour (Self-guided) 14 Zurich Choose another tour 15 Florence En Route, Check in, Free Time 16 Florence Walking Tour (Self-guided), Museums 17 Florence Venice Day Tour 18 Florence Choose another tour 19 Rome En Route, Check in, Free Time 20 Rome Vatican Tours 21 Rome Ancient Rome + Colosseum Walking Tour 22 Rome Pasalubong! (If you have leftover cash) 23 En Route Back to Manila

This is just a sample itinerary to demonstrate the process I detailed above. You can use the same process to come up with your own itinerary based on your own requirements, needs, and restrictions.

More Tips for the Poor Traveler

  • You can still reduce the cost significantly by pulling a DIY (self-guided) for tours and spending much less on food . But again, we love trying local food and learning from our guides and that’s what we recommend.
  • Visit cheaper destinations . In general, Northern Europe is the most expensive while Eastern Europe is the cheapest. If you have a much smaller budget, head to the eastern side of the sub-continent!
  • Download city apps . Like I said above, most key cities in Europe have an app that will help you explore the city more efficiently. These may be subway apps or walking trail apps.
  • Hit the grocery at least once per stop . Eating out in Europe is expensive. The cheapest is to shop for supplies on your first day to cover breakfast and another meal. Eat out only once per day, at most.
  • Get a credit card . You’ll be surprised that most transactions in many European cities are done via credit card, although cash is still accepted. Having a credit card not only allows you to do online transactions, it also gives you a backup in case you run short on cash.
  • Avoid money changers . In our 2 months in Europe, we found that the best way to get local currency is by withdrawing from ATMs.

Great tips! Planning a trip to Europe on a budget is doable, but you will have to plan much more. Even though, that’s the only way I could afford all the trips. ;)

Hi Yoshke Just new to your channel.Im planning to visit europe for 2 weeks. Can you suggest an itinerary for country Paris,Barcelona,Florence/Venice,Prague,We just want to see the major attractions And accommodation you can recommend.Restaurants/cafe. You’re video is a lot of help like us traveling first time in Europe.

Hi Jessica, your destinations are far apart so if you want to save on time (and money), you can just fly with a low cost airline. Regarding itinerary, where are you flying from? Do you already have an entry point/exit point?

For the accommodations, you may check out this post: https://www.thepoortraveler.net/2016/12/where-to-stay-cheap-in-europe-hotel-review/

TJ

Hey Yoshke,

I’m thinking if I should get Eurail passes. I know this is not the cheapest choice but can you recommend some train carriers that offer the cheapest rides like what you mentioned in the article?

Hi TJ, what country?

Kb

Same question. My main itinerary is France, Belgium, Amsterdam, Switzerland and Italy (Rome and Venice). Any suggestions regarding transport among these countries?

Hi Kb, Paris to Belgium and Amsterdam, Thalys is the most popular choice. It’s high speed and very comfortable, even the standard seats. If you’re going to Brussels, there is a low-cost train called Izy but I haven’t tried that.

Switzerland to Venice… where in Switzerland? If Zurich, there used to be a direct EuroCity train from Zurich to Venice. But I’m not sure if it’s still operational. Most of the journeys I find make a stop either in Milan or Munich. Travel time from Milan: 1h40; Fare from €9.90.

Venice to Rome, high speed trains take 3 hours and 45 minutes. It’s usually either Frecciargento or Frecciarossa (Trenitalia). Fares start at €19.90.

Dessa

Hello, I just want to ask regarding your health insurance which one of the requirements in getting the schengen visa. May i know the details which company offers the cheapest? Thanks :)

Hi Dessa, I’m not sure which company offers the cheapest but I got mine from Pacific Cross.

Carla

Hi. When applying for a visa do you need to reserve tickets leaving and returning to Manila or all tickets (trains, buses, planes) when transferring to other countries covered by the Schengen Visa? We’re starting from Greece then our last stop will be Germany before going back to the Philippines.

Hi Carla, it depends on the specific embassy. At which embassy will you be lodging your application?

We’ll apply at the German Embassy. We’ll stay there the longest. Our route will be Manila-Athens-Rome-Paris-Berlin- Manila.

Hi Carla, based on my and my friend’s experience, di kami nagsubmit ng transfers. Wala namang naging problem. Di ko lang sure if okay lang sya in general or natapat lang kami sa medyo maluwag na nag-assess/interview.

K-anne

Can you give me a list of budget airlines to Europe aside from scoot?

Hi K-anne, just use flight comparison websites/apps. The cheapest is not necessarily from a budget airline. When we traveled to Europe, the cheapest we found was offered by Qatar Airways! So be sure to check even full-service airlines because you’ll never know.

Kat

Hi! Thanks for this useful guide.

Your 250K budget, was that for one person for two months?

Yep, 1 person. But we were really on budget. We stayed in hostels and rarely ate out. :)

Thanks for the reply. =)

Gino

Hello, have you shared your itinerary for the 16 countries you visited? I’m sorry i cant find it in your site. You said you will share it soon But couldn’t find it.

No problem!

Glenda

Hi.. maybi ask lng po kung pagkukuha ng visa need ba magpresent ng show money? Tska ung tinatawag na mga rootedness?thanks

Maj

Hi there! In applying for VISA, did you already book your roundtrip flights? I read somewhere that this is not recommended and I’m so paranoid because we already booked ours. Thank you!

Hi Maj, no, I applied for a visa first before booking the tickets. But I submitted flight reservations.

Luz

Hi Yoshke! I’ve always booked flights in advance whenever I traveled (because I always booked sale flights), and this might be the first time I will submit just a flight reservation as you recommended.

I’ll be touring Central Europe sometime in October 2019, entering through Berlin,. Do you have any ball park figure at how much the plane tickets would cost me (roundrip Manila-Berlin or Manila-Berlin and Budapest-Manila) if I book my plane ticket sometime in July (after I get the visa). I previously traveled across Italy and got my roundtrip tickets via Rome for about 490USD via Qatar Airways. I was just wondering how much more I may need to prepare if I will be booking just 3 months before the trip. Also, which airline would you recommend if I will be booking the flight in July. Thanks!

Better search na lang using Skyscanner for the latest rates. Medyo tricky kasi yung case mo kasi baka pumatak sa Oktoberfest yung flight mo. (I remember when I was planning my trip, nung nagtry ako magbook ng hotels in Germany during Oktoberfest, sobrang mahal. Not sure if ganun din ang flights.)

Thanks for the response. And oh no! Hahaha. Just hoping we get approved para di sayang tickets.

Hello Again.. You said Italian embassy is extra strict.. what do you mean by that? compared to other embassies. Do they ask for a lot of documents? Thanks in advance.

Hi Patrick, they have a high rejection rate.

Arthur

Hi, This is very informative. I just checked Air France and their trip from NL to CDG is 7k cheaper than what have you posted. I’d like to pattern my tour with yours, + Amsterdam and the Netherlands (though still have to figure out if its possible). btw, what is your airline going back to Manila from Rome. Many thanks

Hi Arthur, the itinerary here is just a sample. In reality, our trip was much, much longer.

But our flight back to Manila was with Qatar Airways.

Opps. Amsterdam isin the Netherlands. my bad.

CJ Lee

Thank you for this info. It would be very helpful for me. Maybe, you can also help me. I’m also planning 2-week trips to Europe. How much do you think I would spend all in? Thanks for the help.

Hi CJ, it’s very hard for me to estimate how much you will be spending because, as said in the article, it depends on your route (countries to be visited) and your travel style.

patrick

Hello do I need to book already train rides or flights? for example, from venice to paris via easy jet? bec. these websites does not allow cancellation of booking.

Depende sa kung anong embassy ka apply. Pero usually, nirerequire din un ng most embassies.

Alex

Hi Just a clarification, you said you went on a 2 month trip and spent 250k but im confused cause you also laid out on the itinerary that it was only a 23 days but already spent 125k How much was your budget for the whole 2 month trip really

Hi Alex, like I said, the itinerary and budget in this post are just samples, not the actual cost, just to show my planning process. The budget in this post is padded and rounded off.

In reality, I stayed in Europe for 2 months and spent only 250K.

Karla Jacosalem

Your post is really helpful. Planning to do a DIY trip too. Can you share your itinerary? What mode of transportation did you use the most from one country to another?

Kim

I’m a huge fan of you guys! I’m a solo female traveller and your site has really helped me a lot and kept me alive. I’m planning my first trip to Europe but I’m a little afraid because I’ll be so far from home. In north america at least i had some family but in Europe I really don’t know anyone. How do you get around from one tourist site to another? Did you encounter racism like people spitting on you and stuff?

Between cities, we traveled either by train or by plane (longer distances). But within a city, we usually either joined group tours or walked on our own.

We never experienced any form of racism during the trip. We were put on the spot because of the PH president many times but nothing race-motivated. :)

Thanks for your reply. Keep up the great work!

Frances

Hello po. May I ask if you’ve already shared your actual full itinerary and cost? Thank you po.

Ophe

Anong tour company ang inavail mo while you’re in Eu. Thank you :)

Nyleva22

Hi. Just wondering if saan pedeng makabili ng sim card?

Hi Nyvela, for local data SIM, usually sa mga telco branches/stores. For example, when we were in Italy, we went to a Vodafone branch. There are also SIM available on Klook but make sure there are pickup option in the airport where you will land.

LA

Thanks for the informative post! I hope I can travel to Europe too!

Ronaldo Armildez

Thank you for this. May I ask if your air ticket is round trip MNL-CDG-MNL? From your itenerary, you exit port is Rome. Thanks

Best if hindi roundtrip yung ticket. In our case, nung first time namin, MNL-CDG tapos FCO-MNL.

Kate

Hello Yoshke! Can you please share how much yung one way ticket price nyo on MNL-CDG and FCO-MNL? I would like to use this as a baseline.

Hi Kate, it was around P32,000 (Qatar Airways). We actually saw P28,000 tickets before but then the fare went up by the time the visa was released.

Thank you for the info y prompt response, Yosh. Regards

Katrina

Hi! Is it okay to change plans and accommodations after getting the schengen visa?

Hi Katrina.

Yes, that’s fine. However, my only guidance is to have the proof that you will stay longer in the country that gave you your visa because you’ll never know when Immigration Officers will ask for it.

Okay, thank you!! So I can just cancel my accommodation bookings after getting thru the immigration office? Also, can I stay longer than planned? I asked for a 39-day single entry visa and I was given a 54-day multiple entry visa. So im planning of using up the extra days granted to me.

Hi Katrina, as far as I know, yes, as long as you don’t exceed the validity period and allowed length of stay.

By the way, which embassy? Kasi ang French Embassy minsan asks that you return to the embassy after the trip for verification. Pero most other embassies, wala paki.

My point of entry is Austria and point of exit is Czech Republic.

Katrina

Austrian embassy. My only concern is the number of stay indicated in my visa is “39” pero they gave me a visa valid from March 15 to May 05. Am i supposed to be there lang talaga for 39 days within those dates given to me?

If the visa states that you are only allowed 39 DAYS, then you can only stay for 39 days even if the visa is still within the validity period.

Restless Pinay

Thank you so much for this love. However, i have one q. are you using an ATM of a philippine bank> and which one is it?

Grace

Hi I would like to ask what Credit card are being accepted there?

Jessie

Question po, if i will be granted a visa thru german embassy, but my point of entry is France, will i havr a problem in the immigration? Will stay longer in germany and exit point too.

Happened to me once. I applied via German Embassy but I entered via Paris CDG Airport. Didn’t have any problem. My first trip, I had a French Schengen Via, I entered via Amsterdam. No issues. My last trip, had an Italian visa, entered via Athens. No issues. Actually, out of my Euro trips, once lang nagmatch ung entry point and ung visa provider. Afaik, yung longest stay talaga ang nagma-matter, not the point of entry.

Jonah

Hi. Im just wondering if your airline ticket as advertised was from CDO to Paris, Paris to CDO? What if your flying back to CDO from other country different from your 1st destination country? is P30K RT ticket possible?

Hi Jonah, not sure about CDO. We only checked flights from Manila when we booked.

Roy Sabalbaro

Hello po, yun flight example nyo po sa taas round trip po yun?

Deng Gonzales

Thank you for your blog and your guides. Very helpful. Just a question, hope you can help. We applied for Schengen Visa in Switzerland Embassy here in Manila. Since it will not be the last country in Europe I will visit, is it okay to start in France and end in Rome? Switzerland in the middle of the trip?

Hi Deng! I think so po. 3 out of the 4 Euro backpacking trips po namin so far, nasa gitna ng itinerary yung country that granted us the visa. :)

beeone

Hello anong company po Schengen insurance nyo?

Grace

Hi Yoshke! May I ask if you used a Eurail pass during your EU trip? If yes, is it worth it?

On my second Euro trip, yes, we used a Eurail pass. It was worth it because we had an extremely hectic itinerary then and we really used trains a lot. But on our 3rd and 4th tours, our itinerary didn’t really call for a pass. I guess it really depends on your iti and the time of the year of your trip.

JaySam

Saan po kayo nagbobook ng flights pa-Europe na Hindi need magbayad while Wala pang visa approval?

Sa travel agencies po.

This is the itinerary and expenses for my recent trip to Europe and Turkey last May 2022. I spent 8 days in the Schengen area, 11 days in the Balkans, and 7 days in Turkey. My goal for this trip was to explore at least 9 countries to achieve my personal bucket list of visiting 40 countries when I turn 40 and to fulfill my dreams of seeing the Eiffel Tower, the tulips of the Netherlands, The King’s Landing in Croatia, and the hot air balloons in Cappadocia, Turkey.

@escapemanila This is how much I spent in my recent trip to Europe + Turkey! For more details check out my blog post ag bit.ly/eu22exp #fyp #traveltiktok ♬ WayBackHome – 苏七岁

This itinerary is ideal if you want to squeeze your time and visit as many countries as possible. If you plan to follow this itinerary, I highly suggest you also do it in May or late April. The days are longer during these months and it’s still not the peak season so it’s still not so crowded. The sunset when I was there was around 8-9 pm so I was able to really maximize my time exploring each city I visit.

Tulips in Bratislava, Slovakia

Day 0: Davao to Vienna, Austria

I flew from Davao International Airport to Vienna, Austria via Singapore Airlines with a layover in Cebu, Singapore, and Munich. It took me around 24 hours to reach Vienna from Davao. It was quite exhausting but it was fun.

Flight ticket cost: Php45,195 (Roundtrip multi-city ticket Davao-Vienna and Istanbul-Davao).

RELATED: Hostels and Hotels I Stayed in Europe

Day 1: Arrival in Vienna

I thought I’ll have my passport control in Vienna but I was surprised I got stamped in Munich. I learned that if you have a transit flight in the Schengen area, you will have to pass through passport control. Flights within the Schengen area are considered local.

I arrived in Vienna at around 1:00 pm local time. I purchased a one-way airport transfer with 2-day access to local transportation including trams, trains, buses, etc. You can buy the Vienna city card online.

I visited local attractions like St. Stephen’s Cathedral , Belvedere Palace , and many other places. I took a tram to Belvedere and walk around the area back to my accommodation. Must-visit tourist spots in Vienna

Schönbrunn Palace

I stayed at Space Home Hostel – City Hall because I find it convenient and affordable. I booked it online via Booking.com . It is located very close to the metro and tram stations.

Expenses: Hostel: €36 [ Space Home Hostel – City Hall ] Transportation (Airport transfer+city Pass): €11 Meals: €17.2

Day 2: Day trip to Bratislava , Slovakia

I went to Bratislava, Slovakia on my second day in Europe. I left Vienna early in the morning and took a 2-hour train to Bratislava. I explored the old town on a walking tour. I wish I stayed longer. It’s now one of my favorite countries. 10 Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Bratislava

Bratislava, Slovakia

Expenses: Hostel in Vienna €36 Train ticket (Vienna-Bratislava-Vienna) €16 Local train in Bratislava €1.8 Meals: €15.1

Day 3: Vienna to Munich

I left Vienna in the morning for Munich, Germany. I walked from the train station to my hostel, left my bag, and went out to see the market and the attractions in the old town. 10 Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Munich

Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) in the Marienplatz

Expenses: Hostel: €42 [ CVJM Jugendhotel München ] – walking distance from Munich Central Station Train from Vienna to Munich: €36 Grocery: €4 Meals: €25.1

Day 4: Munich to Paris, France

I left Paris at around noon so I decided to explore the English Garden in Munich and see the Eisbach River, one of the filming sites of The Amazing Race Season 3. That episode made an impact to me so I told myself I had to see it up close.

Surfing at Eisbach River in Munich, Germany

Expenses: Train Ticket from Munich to Paris: €79 Hotel: €70.65 [ Walled off Hotel Paris ] Close to the subway. One train ride to Trocadero Tourist Tax: €3 One day Local transportation pass: €12 Souvenir: €16 Meals: €25.5

Day 5: Paris

I spent my 40th birthday in Paris and of course, I explored the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, and the Pantheon. I also had my birthday dinner at Terra Nera, one of the filming locations of Emily in Paris Season 1. 10 Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Paris

A simple birthday dinner at Terra Nera in Paris, France

Day 6: Paris to Amsterdam via Antwerp

I could have gone straight to Amsterdam but I always dreamed of visiting Baarle-Nassau (Netherlands) / Baarle-Hertog (Belgium), one of the strangest borders in the world. It was an Amazing Race kind of experience. I missed the bus going back to the town so I knew I would miss my train to Amsterdam. Good thing my ticket was semi-flexible. I was able to change the time but I still paid 20+ Euro. Check out what to do and how to get to Baarle .

Standing in two countries at the same time at Baarle-Nassau (Netherlands) / Baarle-Hertog (Belgium)

Expenses: Hostel: €33 [ ClinkNOORD Hostel ] Walking distance from Amsterdam Central Station Locker fee at Hostel: €7 Train from Paris to Antwerp: €28 Train from Antwerp to Amsterdam: €55 (originally 35 but I knew I’d miss the train so I had to pay extra to move it to a later time. Bus from Antwerp Central Station to Turnhout and back: €5 Bus from Turnhout to Baarle-Nassau and back: €5 Locker Fee at Antwerp Central Station: €10 (I left my big luggage) Souvenir: €18 Meals €17.5

Day 7: Amsterdam and Overnight train to Basel, Switzerland

My only purpose in visiting the Netherlands was to experience the Tulip Festival. It’s been on my bucket list for many years and I finally unlocked it. I also visited Zaanse Schans to see the windmills. I initially wanted to fly from Amsterdam to Split, Croatia but the flights were already too expensive so I decided to just take an overnight train to Basel, Switzerland. Flights to Split from there are way cheaper, like 3x less from Amsterdam for my date. 10 Must-Visit Tourist Spots In Amsterdam

Zaanse Schans, Netherlands

Expenses: Tulip Festival Card with access to regional bus: €50 [ Booked via Tiqets.com ] Entrance to Windmill: €5 Meals: €28 Nigh train to Basel: €60

Day 8: Basel to Split, Croatia

I really did not have plans for Split, so I decided to just slow down. After all, I have already done so much in the Schengen area so I was quite tired already.

Basel Minster in Basel, Switzerland

Expenses: One Day Train Pass in Basel: 10 Franc Locker fee at Basel Central Station: 9 Franc Grocery + Meals in Basel: 16.7 Franc Plane fare from Basel to Split: 69 Franc Bus fare from Airport to Split Center: 45 Kuna Hostel: €25 [ Hostel Dvor ] Tourism Tax: 10 Kuna Meals + Grocery: 146 Kuna

Day 9: Split to Dubrovnik

I took a bus from Split to Dubrovnik via Flixbus . Here’s another weird border as you have to pass Neum, a town in Bosnia and Herzegovina. You will have to pass through passport control, enter Neum, and another passport control on the Croatian side going to Dubrovnik.

Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia

Expenses: Bus from Split to Dubrovnik: €21.48 ( booked online via Flixbus ) City Tax: 50 Kuna (25 per day) Hotel: 64.6/2 (shared with a friend) €32.3 [ Hotel Dubrovnik ] – close to the bus stop and the Sunset Beach Meals & Grocery: 390 Kuna

Day 10: Dubrovnik

The main reason I wanted to Visit Dubrovnik was because of the Game of Thrones. The filming location of the King’s Landing was in Dubrovnik’s Old Town. I am an avid fan of GOT and it would be a missed opportunity not to visit Dubrovnik when I am already in the Balkans.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

I met my friend in the Dubrovnik and Kotor leg of this trip so hotel expenses are divided by two.

Expenses: Hotel: 64.6/2 (shared with a friend) €32.3 [ Hotel Dubrovnik ] – close to the bus stop and the Sunset Beach Old City Walls Entrance: 250 Kuna Uber to Old Town and Back to Hotel: 100 Kuna Meals + Grocery: 212 Kuna

Day 11: Dubrovnik to Kotor, Montenegro

My friend and I took a bus from Dubrovnik to Kotor, Montenegro. I initially planned of going straight to the capital town of Podgorica but I read something about Kotor and I got interested. We arrived past noon so we had ample time to explore the old town. I hiked to the Fortress and enjoyed a magnificent view of Kotor Bay.

View from the top of Kotor Fortress

Expenses: Uber to Bus Station: 40 Kuna Bus to Kotor ( booked online via Flixbus ): €22 Luggage Fee: 10 Kuna Entrance to the Fortress: €8 Hotel: 60/2 (shared with a friend) €30 [ Apartments Wine House Old Town ] Located inside the Old Town Meals & Grocery: Hotel: €19

Day 12: Wine Tour in Montenegro

We’re supposed to go on a full wine tour – winery, degustation, wine tasting, etc. but it was not available. The grapes are still not bearing fruits and the wine company that we visited, the biggest in Montenegro, had an event so they cannot accommodate us for a degustation tour. We settled with wine tasting at one of their cellars. We had four glasses of different types of wines and they were all good. I got drunk because my alcohol tolerance is low.

Tour at Plantaze's Šipčanik Wine Cellar

Expenses: Rent a car: €120/2 = €60 Wine tasting: €8.5 Hotel: 60/2 (shared with a friend) €30 [ Apartments Wine House Old Town ] Located inside the Old Town Meals: €12

Day 13: Kotor to Tirana

There are only two daily schedules for the Kotor-Tirana route and I took the 10:40 AM trip which took me almost 8 hours to reach Tirana. The earlier trip at 8:00 AM would have been more convenient as it is direct and will only take around 6 hours.

BunkArt Museum in Tirana, Albania

Expenses: Bus to Kotor ( booked online via Flixbus ): €29 Lunch: €4 Hotel: €26 [ Prime Hotel ] walking distance from Skanderbeg Square Taxi from the bus station to hotel: 800 Leke Dinner: 1650 Leke

Day 14: Tirana

I initially planned of going to another city but to be honest I was already a bit exhausted so I decided to just explore Tirana and experience the vibrant coffee culture of the city. I also went to the BUnkArt Museum and took a cable car to see an overlooking view of the capital.

Hotel: €26 [ Prime Hotel ] walking distance from Skanderbeg Square BunkArt Museum Entrance: 500 Leke Cable Car: 1000 Leke Bus to/from Cable Car: 80 Leke Meals + Grocery: 1,340 Leke

Day 15: Tirana to Skopje

There’s only one daily trip from Tirana to Skopje and it took me over 8 hours to reach Skopje. The minibus (or big van) had to pass through different cities in Albania and Macedonia before reaching Skopje. It had multiple stops for toilet breaks and for meals.

I was quite nervous about crossing the border. I was afraid that the border police will not allow me to enter with my multiple-entry visa and it would have been very hard to go back to Tirana since the border control is in the mountains and 3 hours away from the capital city. Luckily, I got in.

Skopje, Macedonia

Taxi to bus station: 500 Leke Bus to Skopje: €20 Booked via Flixbus Taxi from Skopje Bus Station to Hotel: 120 Denar Hotel: €21.6 [ Villa Nina Hotel & Lounge Bar ] located in the city center Meals + Grocery: 762 Denar

Day 16: Day trip to Pristina, Kosovo

I went on an unplanned trip to Pristina since it’s only two hours from Skopje by bus. I was a bit hesitant at first because it’s not included in my travel insurance policy. But I thought, whatever happens, happens so I went to the bus station, bought a ticket and went to Pristina – the youngest capital city in Europe.

Pristina, Kosovo

Hotel: €21.6 [ Villa Nina Hotel & Lounge Bar ] located in the city center Taxi to bus station: 120 Denar Bus to Pristina: €450 Denar Cathedral Tower Access: €1.5 Lunch: €23 Coffee/Snacks: €4.5 Bus from Pristina to Skopje: €7.5 Taxi from border to hotel: €20 Dinner: 200 Denar

Day 17: Skopje to Sofia, Bulgaria

I planned on staying in Skopje for three nights but because of what happened at the Macedonia-Kosovo border the night before, I just wanted to leave the city ASAP. I got held by the border police because they had a different interpretation of the visa policy concerning Schengen. I had no problem entering at the Albania-Macedonia border so I was confident that entering Macedonia again from Kosovo would be a breeze. I was wrong.

One of the many bridges in Skopje, Macedonia

Taxi to Bus Station: 100 Denar Bus ticket to Sofia: 1,650 Denar Breakfast: 150 Denar Laundry: 800 Denar Lunch: 280 Denar Taxi to Bus Station: 120 Denar Hostel: 20 Lev [ Smart Hostel Sofia ] Dinner: 5 Lev

Day 18: Sofia

I still did not recover from the stress I encountered at the Macedonia border control. It honestly drained my energy. So, some of the plans in Sofia were canceled. I woke up late and started exploring the city in the afternoon. I just wanted to gain some energy since I still have a week to go before heading home.

Sofia, Bulgaria

Hotel: 60 Lev [ Generaator Sofia ] Within walking distance from the Sofia Central Station Meals: 25 Lev

Day 19: Sofia to Istanbul

I was supposed to take an overnight train from Sofia to Istanbul for a more comfortable journey but I had to buy at least two tickets to get in. Because of the pandemic, they stopped selling single tickets. You have to travel by two or by four.

St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia, Bulgaria

I took the afternoon bus and left Sofia past 1:00 PM. I arrived at Istanbul Main Bus Station around 10:30 PM.

Breakfast: 5 Lev Lunch: 10 Lev Bus to Istanbul: 45 Lev Dinner: 100 Lira Uber Taxi from the bus station to the hotel: 100 Lira Hotel: €67 [ Orient Express & Spa by Orka Hotels ] – located in the old town (city center)

Day 20: Istanbul

My friend joined me for this trip so again, the hotel cost is divided by two. We stayed in a hotel in the Old Town and the major tourist attractions like the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are only a few minutes away by foot.

Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey

Hotel: €67/2 (Shared with a friend) €33.5 [ Orient Express & Spa by Orka Hotels ] – located in the old town (city center) Meals + Grocery: 745 Lira

Day 21: Istanbul

My friend and I were both tired so we just spent most of our day at the hotel. We went to the Turkish Grand Bazaar in the afternoon and I accompanied him to buy some pasalubong since he is already going home the following day.

Istanbul Grand Bazaar

Hotel: €67/2 (Shared with a friend) €33.5 [ Orient Express & Spa by Orka Hotels ] – located in the old town (city center) Meals: 715 Lira

Day 22: Istanbul to Cappadocia

My flight from Istanbul was delayed for over an hour so I arrived late in Cappadocia. I did not book my hot air balloon tour in advance because I thought I would be able to do that when I arrive. I was disappointed, all balloons were fully-booked. I contacted more than 10 travel agencies to no avail. Maybe next time.

Waiting for the sunset in Cappadocia

By the way, instead of carrying my heavy luggage, I left it at the airport and paid 195 lira for three days.

Taxi to Airport: 350 Lira Left Luggage: 195 Lira (3 days) Plane fare to Cappadocia: 802 Lira Airport to Hotel Shuttle: €7 Meals: 290 Lira Entrance to Sunset Point: 5 Lira Hotel: €27 [ Royal Stone Houses – Goreme ]

Day 23: Cappadocia

I woke up early to go to Sunset Point to get a nice view of the hot air balloons. Looking at the balloons, I thought it would have been great if I was riding one of them. Piece of advice: Book your hot air balloon tours in advance!!!

View of hot air balloons from Sunset Point

Hotel: €27 [ Royal Stone Houses – Goreme ] Sunset Point 2x (morning and afternoon): 10 Lira Meals: 285 Lira

Day 24: Cappadocia to Istanbul

I was supposed to take the evening flight but it was already fully booked, even the afternoon flight. I had to take the 8 AM flight and since the airport is about 45 minutes away from Goreme, the shuttle driver had to pick me up at around 6:10 AM. There was no time to go back to Sunset Point.

Shuttle to Nevsehir Airport: €7 Plane fare to Istanbul: 802 Lira Uber from Istanbul Airport to Hotel 330 Lira Hotel: €42.5 [ All Seasons Hotel ] Less than 5 mins walk from the Tram Station Meals + Grocery: 175 Lira Local transpo: 169 Lira Pasalubong: 2,065 Lira

Day 25: Istanbul

I spent my morning at the hotel and went out to buy pasalubong in the afternoon. I went to the Grand Bazaar but unfortunately, it is closed on Sundays. The Turkish delight shops near the bazaar were also closed so I decided to walk to the city center and bought boxes of Baklava from there.

Turkish Baklava at Hafiz Mustafa

Hotel: €42.5 [ All Seasons Hotel ] Less than 5 mins walk from the Tram Station Local transport: 30 Lira Meals: 170 Lira Pasalubong: 1,400 Lira

Day 26: Istanbul to Davao

My flight back to Davao from Istanbul was on May 30. It was the first day of the implementation of the NO-RTPCR policy for fully vaccinated travelers with at least one booster shot. The lady at the check-in counter still asked me for RT-PCR since the document that she was holding was still not updated. Good thing, the Singapore Airlines website was already updated. I showed it to her and she called her supervisor and she checked me in.

PS: I always buy perfume at the airport duty-free. It’s relatively cheaper compared to buying here in the Philippines.

Uber from hotel to airport: 430 Lira Perfume: €100

Day 27: Layover in Singapore

Breakfast: 10 SGD

TOTAL EXPENSES

  • Multi-city airfare (Davao-Vienna and Istanbul-Davao): Php45,195
  • Hotels, meals, buses, trains, etc.: Php146,330
  • Visa cost + processing fee (VFS): Php5,208
  • Pasalubong: Php19,895
  • TOTAL: Php216,628

PS: I forgot to add the travel insurance cost and ticket reservation fee for visa application.

  • Travel insurance with COVID coverage (31 days): Php3,490
  • Dummy ticket (reservation): Php800
  • TOTAL: Php220,918

NOTES AND TIPS:

  • As you have noticed, this itinerary is jampacked – most of my meals were to go, I ate on trains, buses, and at the hotel.
  • You can still reduce your expenses if you exclusively stay in hostels. I stayed in hostels in the Schengen area (except in France) and stayed mostly in hotels in the Balkans and Turkey.
  • The Balkan countries are relatively cheap.
  • Book your trains and flights within Europe in advance. Ideally, once you get your Schengen visa, start booking. The fare is way cheaper if you book at least 1 month or more in advance.
  • Airfare is cheaper if you book a return flight from the same city. When I checked the Davao-Milan-Davao flight it was only around 35k. I would have saved 10k but my planned itinerary ends in Istanbul. It would have been a hassle to go to Milan.
  • Download the maps.me app, it will help you a lot in navigating without the internet.
  • Book a hotel away from the city center but close to a subway/train/tram/bus station. Hotels are usually cheaper when they’re quite far from the center. Big cities like Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, etc., have transportation passes for unlimited bus/train/tram rides within a specific period of time so you can still save a lot.

Thank for sharing very detailed information. I hope to follow your itin. May I know which country did you apply the Schengen visa?

' src=

You’re welcome po. Applied at the Austrian Embassy tjrough VFS po. 🙂

' src=

Hi, did you use your Schengen Visa for Croatia? Thanks

Hello! Yes po. 🙂

' src=

Hi, did you use your schengen visa for turkey?

Yes po but you still need to secure an e-visa

' src=

Where did you get your dummy ticket po? Thank you

From a local travel agency po.

' src=

Did’nt you experience muggers during your tour? Any tips to avoid them?

Fortunately, I did not. I tried to be at the hotel after sunset 🙂

So, kung backpack dala mo, mas madali.

' src=

Thank you for the detailed itinerary 🙂 Tanong Lang po, Yung Schengen visa is requirement po ng Turkey E-visa no? Nakita ko po kasi sa application nung Turkey E-visa na supporting document ang Schengen visa.. If ever po kasi ang entry point ko is Istanbul tapos after pa nun yung Schengen countries so di ko sure Kung ano unahin na visa, schengen or turkey.. Baka Lang po may idea kayo 🙂 Thanks!

Yes, requirement ang Schengen visa if you apply for Turkey e-visa. Pwede din US Visa. If wlalng Schengen or US visa, you need to apply for a paper visa sa Turkish embassy.

' src=

Ask ko lang po if in your Schengen visa application, you indicated sa itinerary mo yung outside the Schengen zone na trips. Also, ilang days yung validity ng visa na binigay sa yo? I am planning a trip din kasi sa Balkans +Hungary. Croatia and Hungary lang ang Schengen so I am wondering if need ko pang ilagay na punta rin ako ng Serbia, Montenegro, Bulgaria tsaka Bosnia

I only included the itinerary within the Schengen zone.

Learn more about Philippines

Best time to visit philippines.

With a year-round warm climate, expect hot weather when visiting the Philippines at any time of the year. Sea breezes prevail in the coastal regions between November and February, so travel during this time if you wish to take the edge off the heat. January to May are considered the optimum times to visit though, as it is best to avoid the typhoon season which runs from July to October and involves heavy rain, flooding and high winds.

Geography and environment

Consisting of more than 7,000 islands, the Philippines archipelago is located in the South-East of  Asia , in between the South China Sea and the Philippine Sea. Being a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is home to many active volcanoes and a staggering amount of biodiversity, with thousands of plant, mammal, fish and bird species living on land and in the sea. As a very mountainous country, the Philippines is dotted with numerous peaks, which give way to deep valleys that are often studded with rivers and streams. Tropical rainforest occupies much of the landmass, with most of the population living on the low lying coastal areas.

Festivals and events

With a history dating back to 1210, this flamboyant festival is considered one of the Philippines' best. Think massive ostentatious costumes, loud drumming, floats of parading dancers, riotous crowds and a healthy dose of partying, and you've got Ati-Atihan—the Philippines' best shot at Rio Carnaval.

Grand Cordillera Festival

Baguio reserves the fourth last week of November to celebrate life and local culture with ethnic songs, dance, costumes and food. This festival spreads peace and tolerance and provides an interesting snapshot of the lives of the ethnic people of the northern Luzon area.

Iloilo City gets its chance to party with its own version of Ati-Atihan. City streets are decked out with colorful banners, street stalls sizzle with barbecued pork and chicken, and costumed dancers compete for glory.

Feast of Our Lady of Candles

This annual display of epic religious pageantry features a procession of the patroness, fiesta queen and court through the streets and town center of Jaro. Locals carry candles and a statue of the Virgin Mary to the town cathedral, where crowds of people wait. This spirited and vibrant festival is a great introduction to Filipino culture and religious celebrations.

Obando Fertility Festival

Want to see couples dance through the streets in aid of hopefully producing a child? Each year, the town of Bulacan holds this festival for childless couples who wish to produce children. Couples dance down the street to the local church, dance up the aisle and attend mass in honor of the three local patron saints.

Filipino Family Trip: Exploring Europe’s 7 Cities

Walking on the streets of paris with my family, all 24 of us, it truly was a dream come true . yup, there was 24 of us embarking on a journey that was filled with unforgettable experiences and days that had me wishing it would never end..

San Sebastian Group

After months of planning we were ready to go on our family trip to Europe. The main purpose of the trip was to fulfill my grandmothers wish to visit the healing shrine of Lourdes, France. At the time she was diagnosed with breast cancer so we all wanted to do this trip for her. Unfortunately something unexpected happened, literally the day before the trip she had to be taken to the hospital and admitted. So originally there was supposed to be 26 of us but my grandparents couldn’t go, the trip went on and our intentions were still to offer our prayers for her at Lourdes and experience the beauty of Europe.

In the group of 24, 18 of my relatives came from the USA, 3 from Canada, and 3 from the Philippines – my aunt, mom, and I. We had our flights scheduled to arrive in Paris on the same day and only hours apart from each other. Since we came from the Philippines it was an adventure in itself going there, we had a connecting flight via Qatar which was my first time being in the middle east as well.

1st Destination: Lourdes, France

Filipino Family Trip Exploring Europe's 7 Cities

Upon all of us meeting at the Paris airport we then had to transfer to a different airport and fly to Lourdes. It was a quick one hour flight and felt so amazing that all of us were finally together to start our Eurotrip.

Lourdes is famous for its Catholic pilgrimage and healing waters, millions of people go there every year around April. Our visit however was in January, it was winter time so it was really cold and it felt like we had the whole town to ourselves. Most hotels & shops were closed, no lines in tourist attractions, even attended mass with just us and a couple of nuns.

It was honestly the “holiest” place I’ve ever been to and was the perfect place to start our family trip.

2nd Destination: San Sebastian, Spain

Filipino Family Trip Exploring Europe's 7 Cities

While in Lourdes we had planned to go on a day trip to San Sebastian, it was only a 2 hour drive and our guide suggested to go there because they were celebrating a festival. The ride going there was amazing with the Pyrenees (range of mountains) as our view.

Upon arrival we felt the festival vibe right away, people had various costumes and there were a bunch of people wearing a chef’s uniform while banging on drums. It was totally worth the drive as we got to try some Basque cuisine, be part of a festival, and see the sights of San Sebastian.

3rd Destination: Paris, France

Filipino Family Trip Exploring Europe's 7 Cities

From Lourdes we flew back to Paris, it felt surreal to experience the beauty of the city more so doing it with my family. Before the trip we had been practicing basic French and it was funny hearing everyone’s version of the French accent. We stayed there for a few days so we got to see plenty of attractions like the Eiffel tower, Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, and just walking on the streets felt magical – oh and they had the best pastry ever. Paris is one of the cities that you just can’t have enough of, I dream of going back there and wish to live there too!

4th Destination: Venice, Florence, Rome – Italy

Filipino Family Trip Exploring Europe's 7 Cities

Next stop was Italy, at this point we were down to 15 as some of my relatives had to go back to America. This time around we opted for a a different kind of adventure in terms of transportation. We flew in to Venice from Paris but from Venice we took the train going to Florence and took the train as well from Florence to Rome.

It felt like we were on the Amazing Race, all 15 of us had luggage ’s to carry making our way to the train station. Then we had to rush getting all the bags & suitcases on the train quickly because the doors opened only for 5 minutes – it was a team effort as we lined up to pass the bags on the train. We felt tired but luckily no one was left behind and we got to experience Europe’s landscape from the view of the train.

Another cool experience was that in all the 3 cities we visited in Italy we did the Hop On/Hop Off tour bus ride. It is basically a bus that goes to all the tourist spots of the city, you only have to pay once and then just hop on a bus, hop off to your desired area, take pictures and enjoy, then hop on the next bus and go somewhere else. These buses drop by every 30 mins – 1 hour so you don’t have to worry about being left behind. It’s a great way to see a lot of sights on a budget.

Final Destination: Amsterdam, Netherlands

Filipino Family Trip Exploring Europe's 7 Cities

Italy was awesome but now its time to pack our bags & luggage ’s once again to head to Amsterdam. This time we took a plane again and while on air we passed by the Swiss Alps which was another unexpected experience that I won’t forget. I didn’t know what to expect in going there but at the end of the trip I have to say that Amsterdam is one of the friendliest cities I’ve ever been to. They are popularly known as the place where marijuana is legal and for the red light district but after walking around and interacting with locals who are more than happy to help, I remember it to be a friendly city.

Another thing I noticed was that majority of the local’s transportation was walking or riding their bikes. I thought that was cool and we experienced the joy of walking around the canals as well.

Bonus Destination: Doha, Qatar

Filipino Family Trip Exploring Europe's 7 Cities

On our way home from Europe the Philippine group (my aunt, mom, and myself) once again had to go through Qatar first because we had a 12 hour layover. I imagined just staying in the airport and sleeping till our flight back home but we were given an unexpected blessing. We got a temporary visa to enter Qatar and even got a free hotel room from Qatar Airways to rest. Luckily we had a relative working there whom we called and gave us a tour around the city. It was another awesome experience spending time in the middle east even just for a day.

Overall I believe our trip to Europe could not have been any better, spending quality time with my family and having these experiences together made it even more special. Most importantly, 2 years after our trip my grandmother is now cancer free which I believe is a blessing from our trip to Lourdes!

What’s the most number of people have you travelled with? Looking forward to hearing your stories on traveling with a big group as well!

is this D.I.Y. or you were part of a tour?

How much you spend and can you suggest travel agency plan your your?

How do you apply for a Schengen visa as a freelancer? What documents do you submit as proof of employment? Or was the whole trip sponsored?

Hey Neeenaaa great question! The following documents were asked from me as proof of employment:

1. Personal Website/Blog/Portfolio – at the time however I didn’t have one yet so all I did was submit the website of my client which had my name in their ABOUT US page, i didn’t know that was required so the consul just made me write the URL on a piece of paper.haha

2. Last 2 months bank statement

That’s all and you’re pretty much good to go 😀

Thanks for publishing this on your blog guys. Excited to share more travel stories! 🙂

About Your Pilgrimage

philippines europe tour

Mary is the mother who patiently and tenderly leads us to God, so that He may untie the knots in our soul.

~ Pope Francis

Embark on a journey of faith to the famous apparitions sites of the Blessed Mother. Visit and pray at the magnificent churches built in her honor. Join a 16-day Pilgrimage to the Great Marian Shrines of Europe (Belgium, France, Spain, and Portugal) with Fr. Momoy Borromeo on May 14-29, 2024.

Your pilgrimage begins with a Mass at the  Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels, Belgium . Also known as the  Brussels Cathedral , this medieval Sanctuary is one of the finest examples of Brabantine Gothic architecture. It is recognized as one of the most important monuments in the city.  Enjoy a full day guided tour of the city which includes a visit to the  Grand Place , the central square of Brussels and one of the most beautiful squares in Europe.

Head off to  Banneaux  in  Belgium  to visit the  Shrine of the Virgin of the Poor . Here, the Blessed Mother appeared eight times to a young girl, Marietta Beco. A chapel was built in her honor where a sacred spring exists, that has brought healing to numerous pilgrims. Next stop is  Beauraing  to celebrate Mass at the  Shrine of Our Lady of Beauraing , where Our Lady is also known as the Virgin with the Golden Heart. At this place, Our Lady appeared 33 times to five children to whom she promised conversion of sinners.

Journey on to the romantic city of  Paris, France .  Enjoy a sightseeing tour of the city, which includes a visit and Mass at the  Church of the Miraculous Medal . From Paris, travel down south to  Nevers  and visit the  St. Gildard Convent  where the incorrupt body of St. Bernadette Soubirous lies. Travel onwards to  Paray Le Monial , home town of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Leave for  Ars  to visit the  Basilica of Ars  where you will find the reliquary containing the body of St. Jean Marie Vianney, patron saint of priests.

Next stop is a visit to the breathtakingly beautiful  Sanctuary of Notre Dame of La Salette , an apparition site of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The message of La Salette focuses on the conversion of all humanity to Christ through daily prayer and frequent reception of the sacraments of penance and the Eucharist.

En route to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, stop by the  Shrine of Our Lady of Laus,  one of the five places of Marian apparitions in France officially recognized by the Catholic Church. Mary revealed herself in Laus as the Reconciler and Refuge of Sinners.

Arrive in  Lourdes  to catch the evening Rosary and Candlelight procession at the  Sanctuary of Our Lady of   Lourdes.   In 1858, Bernadette Soubirous reported visions of Our Lady. She identified herself as the Immaculate Conception and asked that a chapel be built there. Spend time in quiet reflection at the  Grotto of Massabielle , the Blessed Virgin’s apparition site. Make sure to find time to bathe in the  Baths  where numerous healings were reported and confirmed by the Catholic Church.

Leave France for Spain to visit the  Sanctuary of Our Lady of Arantzazu,  where St. Ignatius of Loyola spent a night in vigil and made his vow of chastity.  For Ignatius, it was a time of great grace for strengthening his resolve to follow Christ. Still in Spain, travel to Burgos  to celebrate Mass at the  Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos , also known as  Burgos Cathedral , a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its Gothic architecture.

Cap off your pilgrimage in  Fatima, Portugal,  and spend two nights at the  Sanctuary of Our   Lady of Fatima . Here, Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children — Lucia, and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta – between May and October 1917. Celebrate Mass at the  Chapel of Apparitions , an open-air chapel built on the site of the appearances.

Who is closer to the Son than His Mother? Heed Our Blessed Mother’s call to an experience with God. Join a 16-day Pilgrimage to the Great Marian Shrines of Europe (Belgium, France, Spain, and Portugal) with Fr. Momoy Borromeo on May 14-29, 2024. Be inspired and spiritually uplifted as you dwell in the places where the Blessed Mother has appeared and where the great Saints have lived.

Fatima is a town located 142 km (88 miles) North of Lisbon. Fatima is one of the most important catholic shrines in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Fatima’s Sanctuary welcomes millions of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. Fatima’s fame is due to the Apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary that appeared to three shepherd children; Lucia dos Santos and her two younger cousins, Francisco and Jacinta. Between May and October of 1917, the three children witnessed several apparitions. The last one, on October 13th, was confirmed by a miracle witnessed by 60,000 people known in the catholic world as “the day the sun danced”.

Our Lady of Fatima is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary by those who believe that she appeared to three shepherd children at Fatima, Portugal on the 13th day of six consecutive months in 1917, starting on 13 May, the Fatima holiday. The title of Our Lady of the Rosary is also used in reference to the same apparition; the children related that the apparition specifically identified herself as “the Lady of the Rosary.” It is also common to see a combination of these titles, i.e., Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima (Portuguese: ”Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima”).

Burgos is a city in northern Spain and the historic capital of Castile. It is situated on the confluence of the Arlanzon river tributaries, at the edge of the Iberian central plateau. It has about 180,000 inhabitants in the actual city and another 20,000 in the metropolitan area. It is the capital of the province of Burgos, in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon.

Castilian nobleman, military leader, and diplomat El Cid Campeador is a significant historical figure in the city, as he was born a couple of miles north of Burgos and was raised and educated here.

The city forms the principal crossroad of northern Spain along the Camino de Santiago, which runs parallel to the River Arlanzon.

Burgos has been selected as the Spanish Gastronomy Capital of 2013.

The Sanctuary of Loyola or Shrine and Basilica of Loyola consists of a series of edifices built in Churrigueresque Baroque style around the birthplace of St. Ignatius of Loyola,  founder of the Society of Jesus.

The sanctuary stands along the river Urola at the neighbourhood of Loyola (Loiola, a place-name meaning ‘foundry made in clad’, or possibly ‘hut made in clad’) in the municipality of Azpeitia, Basque Country, Spain.

Ignatius of Loyola, whose real name was Iñigo López de Loyola , was the son of the Lord of Loyola, Beltrán Ibáñez de Oñaz and Marina Sánchez de Licona, member of an important Biscayan family. He was born in 1491 in his family house in Loyola.

After he died his birthplace became a place of veneration. In the seventeenth century the house where he was born was given to the Society of Jesus. The Order built there, near the birthplace of its founder, the Sanctuary of Loyola.

Lourdes is a small town in the Hautes-Pyrenees departement in southwest France .  It is the largest Catholic pilgrimage destination in France and one of the most popular Catholic shrines in the world.

On February 11, 1858, the Blessed Virgin Mary revealed herself to a poor shepherd girl, Bernadette Soubirous. Eighteen such apparitions were reported.

The most sacred site at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is the Grotto of Massabielle, also known as the Miraculous Cave or the Cave of Apparitions. The Grotto of Massabielle is the site of St. Bernadette’s vision of the Virgin Mary where she revealed herself as the Immaculate Concepcion. The Virgin Mary is said to have pointed out a previously undiscovered spring in the grotto and instructed St. Bernadette to “Go and drink at the spring and wash there.” The spring water from the grotto is believed to posses healing properties and to date,  sixty seven cures have been officially recognized as miraculous by the Roman Catholic Church.

Testimonials

philippines europe tour

The whole pilgrimage is a new and fulfilling moment in my life. It’s a nice feeling being with the Lord in His important day. And also, gaining new friends and becoming my new extended family is something I will treasure. I hope that this is just the beginning and we’ll continue to get in touch with one another despite the distance.

Hello Co-Pilgrims,

It was indeed a wonderful Pilgrimage: very rich in history, a thanksgiving of blessings, a spiritual renewal and nourishment, and finally ending in a test of Faith.

Thank you so much Pilgrim Leader, Ging Igual, for standing beside us up to the last stretch of our 13-day journey - more particularly in the handling of an unexpected situation (cancelled flight in Mexico and re-direction of flights to make sure the 38 Pilgrims reach LA for their respective flight bookings). Ging, you were an angel to us so blessed with energy, passion, love and Milagrosa. We really felt the presence of Our Lady of Guadalupe fielding angels every step of the way.

The Pilgrimage to California Mission Churches and Our Lady of Guadalupe gives me personal inspiration for the work and activities of the next chapter of my lifetime: farming with promotion of agriculture for millennials (inspired by the scenic view of farms in California), tourism (which is a major industry in all places we visited), and support for a favourite major seminary in Tagaytay and a scholarship fund for deserving individuals (thru a non stock non profit institution).

Thank you to my Co-Pilgrims and prayer partners for the prayer support, sharing of life experiences and friendships;  Fr. Tony, thank you for your spiritual reflections and service;  Fr. Jerry Orbos for an overflowing spiritual reflections and enabling us to have the needed personal encounter with Jesus and Mama Mary (it was like a 12-day Holy Retreat); and the Executive Resources for making a very nice pilgrimage package a part of our lifetime.

Lord, we cannot find words enough to say how grateful we are to You. Our pilgrimage made us realize that Your love for us is more than what we deserve.

To all our co-pilgrims, thank you for making us feel we belong to this new family. To Fr. Dante, thanks for your prayers and pieces of advice for our spiritual nourishment. To Sis Lea, for taking care of each one of us. To Sis Joy, thanks for the contagious joys and laughters.

To our prayer partners, Sis Maribel, Melvy and Didick and Bro Mon and Sis Jot, thank you for your prayers. We will pray for you, too!

To The Pilgrim’s Center - Executive Resources, thank you for accommodating us in this Eastern Europe Pilgrimage.

God bless us all always!

Dear Pilgrims' Center:

My husband Aldo & I would like to praise & commend our Pilgrim Chaplain Fr. Dante Venus & our Tour Leader Bro. Monty for the very successful & memorable pilgrimage to Italy & the Holy Land we were very fortunate to join on March 26-April 8, 2018.

It was very hectic to be sure, but still they managed our time very well that we were able to visit more places than was promised in the itinerary, and we are very appreciative of that. Likewise, the solemnity of the whole pilgrimage experience was still observed despite many of us in the group, myself included, often forgetting that we were pilgrims & not tourists 😉😉, taking photos, selfies, etc. instead of, or before focusing on what the local guide was explaining or on the scripture readings. I cannot fault us pilgrims on this because for many of us seniors, and I speak for my husband & I, that trip might be our first & last time to visit those places, so we made sure they were properly documented. Nonetheless, it was a truly spiritually uplifting & life-changing experience for us. We continue to thank our Lord for making that experience of a lifetime possible. Indeed, nothing is impossible for God! Thank you very much to Fr. Dante, Bro. Monty & to each of us pilgrims in the group for the prayers, love, care & concern shown to each other. Let us continue to pray for and with each other. It is my hope that we meet each other again soon, to strengthen our bonds of friendships.

Most sincerely, Leclec Cabusora

My husband and I just came back from a wonderful trip to Israel - with Franciscan Fr Reu Galoy. Thank you Pilgrim Center for the arrangements. We are so happy and satisfied with all that you have done for us. Kudos to Yanyan and Monty from Pilgrim Center, and Fr Reu and Ronin for your caring services. It was a spiritual journey and we felt the abiding presence of the Lord all throughout.

Our pilgrimage was worth all the hardships (I was having leg pains). We had an excellent leader in the person of Adrian, two priests Fathers Val and Ron, who gave us very nice pieces of advice and homilies, and of course the members of the group who were all very nice. Looking forward to join another pilgrimage.

It was the most profound experience I had in my whole life....Walking with the Footsteps where Jesus walked made my life more grateful and humble....My faith become stronger as I express it...A growing faith is a sharing faith....TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!! SHALOM!

Vir & I would like to express our gratitude for a wonderful pilgrimage we had from Sept 5-18. From checking-in last Sept 5 & all during the tour, we felt the care from a family. No words can ever describe how thankful we are.

I almost cried last Sept 8, (my birthday) when we (2 of us have the same birthday) were given a surprise mini celebration when after our dinner, we were given a cake. I really felt the love of a family then.

All these things made possible because of your capable coordinator Ms. Ging Igual. She's such a wonderful leader. Kudos to her.

Rest assured that i will refer your company to all my friends who are planning to go on pilgrimage .

Good day & may God always guide & protect all of you in the Pilgrims' Center/ Executive Resources, Inc.

I am honored to be included in this pilgrimage. The Pilgrims' Center has very good itineraries worth remembering. No hours wasted. They took very good care of us in spite of our big number of 47 people. The daily mass and homilies of Fr. Manny Cruz held in different shrines and churches were very inspirational and transforming. Accommodations were nice most especially the one on top of the Mountain with an awesome view built in 1909. It's like travelling back in time. I definitely would want to do it again with Pilgrim Center.

philippines europe tour

The Pilgrims' Center always gives you the best. They let you feel like an Executive in terms of personal service & attention especially during pilgrimage. Their choices of pilgrimages and pilgrim chaplains are outstanding. You go back home very fulfilled and immersed...

Man with no travel history is first mpox case in Philippines since December

Amid the global scare over the recent outbreak of mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox), Phillippines detected a new case of the virus in the country. The Philippine Health Department confirmed the news on Monday, noting that this is the first case in the country since December last year.

What was concerning was the fact that the Department of Health (DOH) mentioned that the Filipino man who was diagnosed with the virus had no travel history outside the country. The DOH mentioned that the man started showing symptoms more than a week ago with a fever. Four days later he started having a distinct rash on his face, back, nape, trunk, groin, as well as palms and soles.

“The case is a 33-year-old male Filipino national with no travel history outside the Philippines but with close, intimate contact three weeks before symptom onset,” the DOH said in a statement, GMA News reported.

The variant of the virus is yet to be determined

The patient was brought back to a government hospital where samples were connected for testing. The variant of the virus is yet to be determined. “PCR test results are positive for Monkeypox viral DNA,” the DOH said.

The case occurred in the Philippines days after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the disease as a “Global Public Health Emergency”. This is the second time in two years the international body had to take such measure.

A new form of the virus has triggered global concern as it seems to spread easily through routine close contact. Last week, Sweden reported the first mpox case of the new variant outside the continent of Africa.

After detecting the first case, the Stockholm-based ECDC said more imported cases to Europe were “highly likely”. “Due to the close links between Europe and Africa, we must be prepared for more imported clade I cases,” ECDC director Pamela Rendi-Wagner said in a statement.

At least 450 people died during the initial outbreak of the new variant in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The disease has since spread to areas of central and east Africa.

Mpox spreads by physical contact and causes a characteristic lumpy rash, fever, aches, and pains. Medical professionals have always raised concerns over the matter since the virus can be extremely fatal.

Clade 1b appeared in DRC in September last year and is touted as the “most dangerous variant yet”. It has a higher mortality rate than clade 2 - said to be between 5-10 per cent compared to 0.2 per cent and has already accounted for 15,000 cases in Africa this year.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the symptoms usually appear 6-13 days after infection and include fevers and headaches, rashes or sores and muscle aches.

The Philippines has reported a new case of the mpox virus, the first in the country since December.

Health officials said on Monday that the patient, a 33-year-old Filipino male from capital Manila, has no history of foreign travel.

The case was reported to the health agency on Sunday.

“He did not travel [abroad]. That means the virus is already here in the Philippines,” Herbosa said, adding no border control measures will be implemented similar to those during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Officials are still awaiting the sequencing of the results of the test to determine what type of strain has been detected in the country.

The new form of the virus has triggered global concern as it seems to spread easily through routine close contact.

On Wednesday, the WHO declared mpox a global public health emergency , its highest form of alert, following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that had spread to neighbouring countries.

On Thursday, Sweden reported its first case of mpox clade I, a viral infection that spreads through close contact and is a more dangerous variant of the known mpox. It is the first case of the variant outside of Africa ; more cases are expected in the region in the coming days.

Pakistan on Friday confirmed at least one case of the mpox virus in a patient who had returned from a Middle East country, but officials said they did not yet know the strain.

Philippine health officials received five suspected cases of the mpox in the last week, but only a 33-year-old male tested positive for the viral infection.

The man experienced a fever a week ago before a “distinct rash” was detected.

“The blister contained fluid. But it’s different from the fluid from chicken pox because it turns into pus over time,” a health department spokesperson said.

The department is updating its mpox guidelines to encourage those exhibiting symptoms to seek consultation and testing.
