The Top 10 Things to Do and See in Figueres, Spain

Dali Theatre Museum, Figueres, Spain

The small town of Figueres lies within Catalonia’s Costa Brava region in Spain. It sits approximately 45 minutes’ drive north of Girona and half an hour south of the French border. The town’s main claim to fame is that it was where the artist Salvador Dalí was born and is where his main museum in Spain is located. But there’s more to it than the eccentric artist, so here’s our pick of the top 10 things to do and see in Figueres.

Teatro museo dalí.

figueres places to visit

The Teatro Museo is the main Dalí museum in Spain. It’s housed in a large red theatre, which was renovated by Dalí himself. On the outside it’s covered in yellow pieces of the local bread, with white eggs on the roof and golden statues. Dalí wanted this museum to be a surrealist journey through his bizarre world, and he definitely succeeded in that aim. The museum houses one of the best Dalí collections of art in the world, featuring not only paintings and drawings, but also three-dimensional installations and sculptures. This is also where the artist is buried.

Dalí Jewels Collection

Right next to the Dalí Theatre Museum is the Dalí Jewels Collection, a permanent exhibition housed in a purpose-built two-storey building. It showcases an extensive collection of jewellery made by the artist between 1941 and 1970 and also features 39 gold jewels and precious stones of the Owen Cheatham collection. Visitors will also be able to see 27 drawings and paintings that Salvador Dalí made for the jewels’ designs.

Museu del Joguet de Catalunya

Museu del Joguet de Catalunya, Figueres

The Toy Museum of Catalonia is a great place to take the kids on your exploration of Figueres. The museum covers three floors and houses an extensive collection. On the ground floor you’ll find the information desk, temporary exhibits as well as spaces for the little ones to draw and colour. Head up to the first floor to discover all about the games of ancient times. Here you’ll find, among ancient spinning tops, dolls and figurines, the remains of a board game named Ur, which is a direct antecedent of chess and dates back to 3000BC. And on the top floor, kids of all ages will delight in the miniature railway built by Andreu Costa Pedro (Barcelona, 1926–2013), who took eight years to construct it.

Museu De L’Empordà

Museu de lEmporda, Figueres

Museu De L’Empordà houses one of the most outstanding collections of art in the region. It first opened in 1946, however its collection dates back to the end of the 19th century. It is currently housed in a building constructed in 1971 as a museum of archeology, history and art, but today mainly focuses on art with a few archeology collections. Artists whose work is featured here include Sorolla, Casas, Gargallo, Tàpies and Dalí.

Museu de la Tècnica de l’Empordà

Museu de la Tècnica de lEmpordà, Figueres

As the name suggests, The Technology Museum of Empordà focuses on technology and exhibits more than 3,000 mechanical antiques from the 18th and 19th centuries. You’ll see everything here, from the first sewing machines (1830) to unique typewriters, telephones and switchboards. Look out for the stunning Morez Comptoise clocks and the 1908 Hispano-Suiza car. It’s one of the finest collections of tools on display in Catalonia.

Our video from Figueres

Our opinion about figueres.

For us, a visit to Figueres was a one-day trip from Saint-Cyprien in France where we lived for a few weeks. We visited it in mid-December and during that time the city was fairly quiet, without hordes of tourists, most of whom were in the Dali Museum. During that time there also was a really nice Christmas Market in town, and we brought back with us Tió de Nadal, a famous Christmas Log from Catalonia.

We’re not huge fans of art or museums but we truly enjoyed our visit to Dali Theatre-Museum and immersing ourselves into the mind of a genius surrealist. We spent there around 2.5h and could do even more but after that time we were already tired and we passed by the last 20-30% of the exhibitions fairly quickly. We hate crowds, and visiting in December was very pleasant, only from time to time we came across other people.

Unfortunately, our visit to Figueres wasn’t without mishaps. We really wanted to visit the Toy Museum but didn’t check that it’s closed on Sundays. We also wanted to visit the fortress but arrived 20 minutes before closing. Maybe next time!

Figueres, Spain Travel Guide: Discover Dalí and Catalonian Charm

Discover the best things to do in Figueres, Spain with this travel guide and explore Dalí’s birthplace.

Figueres is most famous for the Dalí Theatre and Museum (it’s no wonder why) and as the city where the artist Salvador Dalí was born.

Walking through the small city just west of the famous stretch of beaches in Costa Brava, it’s easy to spot the museum (and burial site) of Dalí, with its many large eggs contrasting the red facade in bold fashion.

There’s no getting around it – you’re probably visiting Figueres just to see the museum. But do yourself a favour and stick around for a while longer. There’s actually a small but rich collection of museums and historical sites to visit. And you’ll have easy access to Northern Catalonia’s best beaches and wineries.

Let’s take a look at everything you need to know about discovering Figueres on your holiday in Spain .

Looking for a historic hotel in the heart of Figueres? I recommend staying at Duran Hotel & Restaurant .

Top 5 Things to Do in Figueres

Tour the dalí theatre-museum.

Dali Museum, Figueres Spain

Most holidaymakers plan a day trip (or weekend visit) to Figueres, Spain, to tour the Dalí Theatre-Museum . Rightfully so. It’s no accident that Salvador Dalí’s artwork (and tomb) are here. The building itself plays an important role in the history of the artist’s career, as he showcased many of his first pieces in the former theatre. Opened in the 1970s after years of renovation, the museum hosts an impressive collection of his very best works. In fact, many of the pieces are from his very own collection. Surrealism was at the core of Dalí’s artwork, so you can expect the museum to have some unusual (and unforgettable) exhibits. It delivers plenty of surprises and hosts enough original artwork to keep you entertained for hours.

Dali Museum, Figueres Spain

Walking into the museum in Figueres is like entering another dimension in time. Seriously. The artist had a knack for capturing dream-like states and putting them on canvas, clothing, and sculptures. Highlights include the building itself (with giant eggs and gold figurines adorning the top) and a garden courtyard displaying the Rainy Taxi and its mannequin passengers.

figueres places to visit

Visit the Dalí Jewels Collection

Dali Jewels Museum , Figueres Spain

It’s easy to miss the Dalí Jewels Collection, which is actually a continuation of the Dalí Museum in a separate building next door. Take the time to walk over, as your ticket gets you inside this gallery, too.

You’ll find sketches of the jewellery designs and actual pieces made from gemstones, gold, and coral. Go with an open mind and ask plenty of questions on your guided tour, as the annex is full of surprises.

Top Tip: Both the Jewels Collection and Dalí Theatre and Museum are closed on Mondays. Book a time slot in advance to visit the museums.

Hike Up to the Castell de Sant Ferran

Castell de Sant Ferran

Dalí and Figueres go hand in hand, but a few landmarks in the capital of Alt Empordà were here long before the famous artist was born. Hike up from the city centre and explore the massive castle and walk inside the fortress walls. Castell de Sant Ferran has a rich history and unique engineering design that played an important role in defending the city in the 1700s. The Republican leaders held their last meeting during the Spanish Civil War here, and the massive grounds held up to 6,000 people at a time.

Top Tip: Arrive here early, and you’ll likely be one of only a few visitors. Few historical landmarks in Spain are this well-preserved yet free of massive crowds.

Go Wine Tasting in Figueres

Figueres is located in the heart of Empordà, one of the lesser-known wine regions in Spain, but with some great spots to visit. That makes wine tasting a must when heading from Barcelona to Figueres. I recommend hiring a driver and visiting some wineries in the Empordà DO, a historical wine region dating back several decades.

El Celler d’en Marc in Costa Brava and Terra Remota are two stops along the DO Empordà wine route you’ll want to experience. Trust me.

Top Tip: Sample native grapes like Carinyena and Macabeu for the best examples of local red and white wine.

Tap Into Your Inner Child at the Toy Museum of Catalonia

figueres places to visit

You can explore an enormous collection of toys at this museum which is home to thousands of dolls, vehicles, and puzzles.

Since 1982 the museum has been a popular stop for locals and tourists in Figueres, featuring toys from many famous Spanish figures, including Terenci Moix, Joan Brossa, and Salvador Dalí.

Top Tip: You won’t need much time here, but it’s a nice addition to a visit to the Dalí Museum.

Brilliant Things to See & Do in Figueres

Visit the església de sant pere.

figueres places to visit

This iconic building is an important landmark in Figueres dating back to the 10th and 11th Centuries. Look around, and you’ll notice Romanesque and Gothic architecture inside and out.

The church survived centuries (and the Spanish Civil War) and was renovated after significant damage to the building in the 20th Century.

Top Tip: Stop by for another glimpse into the life of Salvador Dalí. The church hosted his baptism and funeral.

Go Beach Hopping Along Costa Brava

Platja Gran – Costa Brava

If you take a road trip from Barcelona or Girona to Figueres, you can head out for an afternoon of beach hopping just a short drive from the city centre.

Platja de La Rubina, Platja de Can Comes, and Platja La Punta are three lovely golden sand beaches, all within about 30 minutes of Figueres.

Learn More About Catalonian History at the Museu de l’Empordà

Discover more of the artwork, artefacts, and history of Catalonia and Empordà at the Museu de l’Empordà. You can see much of the artwork in an hour or two at most, including pieces from Joaquin Sorolla, Pablo Gargallo, and (of course) Salvador Dalí.

Technical Museum of the Empordà

Another museum worth visiting on your trip to Figueres is the Technical Museum of the Empordà. As a writer, I (admittedly) have a soft spot for this one. It’s a collection of some of the most unique and incredible typewriters ever made. There are also some really old (and pretty cool) sewing machines, which together make up the thousands of old machines in this underrated museum.

Must-Try Bars & Restaurants in Figueres

Sentits gastrobar.

Sentits Gastrobar

Situated in a prime location in La Rambla de Figueres, Sentits Gastrobar is a perfect stop any time of day for people watching and enjoying a snack and refreshing drink in the heart of the city.

This is a perfect spot to land if you’re looking for a casual meal and a glass of wine or beer at a sidewalk cafe. Order a sandwich, share a few plates (the Gorgonzola flatbread and jamon are both  winners), and enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the buzzing city centre.

La Taverna del Barri Vell

If you’re looking for the best Catalonian cuisine in Figueres, head to La Taverna del Barri Vell and arrive with an appetite. Trust me. The vibe is relaxed, the menu changes frequently but never disappoints, and the seafood plates are worth coming back for a second time if you spend a few nights in Figueres.

El Motel (Hotel Empordà Restaurant)

A couple of the most famous restaurants in Figueres are in hotels. El Motel (Hotel Empordà Restaurant) is one of them and doesn’t disappoint.

The beautiful setting on a garden terrace sets the tone for a romantic meal at this popular local favourite for upscale dining. Expect classic fine dining service with careful attention to presentation and a lovely selection of local cheeses and wines between courses.

Best Hotels in Figueres

Hotel duran & restaurant.

Hotel Duran & Restaurant is a long-running hotel that’s stayed in the Duran family for over a century. The building is actually much older, as you’ll likely notice dining in the famous restaurant on site (which Dalí himself reportedly frequented.)

Rooms are small but comfortable, relatively modern, and soundproofed to ensure a good night’s sleep in the heart of Figueres.

Hotel Restaurant Bon Retorn

Just outside of Figueres city centre is Hotel Restaurant Bon Retorn , a quiet boutique nestled in the Catalonian countryside next to beautiful gardens and an outdoor pool. Have lunch or dinner at the famous restaurant on-site, featuring seasonal Mediterranean cuisine using the finest locally sourced ingredients.

Hotel Pirineos

The small and stylish boutique Hotel Pirineos is a centrally located hotel featuring a popular breakfast buffet with local Catalonian cuisine that’s perfect for filling up before exploring the museums and shops around town.

Salvador Dalí Museum in Figueres (Girona, Catalonia)

Figueres, county capital of Alt Empordà, extends over a river plain situated inland in the province of Girona.

Known as the home of Salvador Dalí, this town with deep Catalan roots offers visitors the chance to go to the Dalí Theatre-Museum, dedicated to the genius of surrealist painting. It is a cultural range completed with various museums and a calendar full of festivals and events divided up throughout the year.

Figueres also has an important heritage of monuments, among which the old medieval walls and the castle of Sant Ferran are outstanding, as well as examples of Modernist and Neoclassical architecture which appear dotted around the city centre. To the many attractions of Figueres, are added its excellent position, which enables you to discover the great tourist potential offered by beautiful parts of the Costa Brava. Situated between the eastern end of the Pyrenean chain and the Costa Brava , Figueres is a town full of tourist attractions. On the outskirts, the castle of Sant Ferran , a fortress built in the 18 th century, dominates the town on top of a hill. Its colossal size and its perimeter of more than three kilometres, make it one of the largest in Europe. The historic centre of Figueres is bounded by remains of its old wall , put up in the Middle Ages to defend the town. Beautiful corners from the medieval period are preserved, like the Plaza del Ayuntamiento , remodelled in Neoclassical style and where the council building stands, or the area around Carrer Magre , where there old Jewish quarter was located. La Rambla is the main place for walking and the real heart of the city. This lively commercial street concentrates the most ambitious architectural projects of the 19 th and 20 th centuries, most of them pushed forward by the rising local middle classes of the time. The great profusion of modernist buildings , like Casa Cusí , Casa Puig-Soler and Casa Salleras should be pointed out; and, in Neoclassical style, Casa Bonaterra, Casa del Cafè Progrés and Casa Polideseia should be mentioned. In terms of religious architecture, the church of Sant Pere deserves special attention. Originally build in Romanesque style, the parish church was rebuilt in the 14th century under Gothic rules. Later other elements were added, such as the transept and the apse, both from te 18 th century. Other interesting buildings are the chapel of Sant Sebastià , of medieval origin and remodelled at the beginning of the 17 th C. and the Convent of Els Caputxins , a complex built in the 18 th century.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum

Without doubt, however, one of the historical milestones that has left the greatest mark on the character of the town was the birth of Salvador Dalí. The Dalí Theatre-Museum , situated in the old municipal theatre, has become one of the main cultural places to see in the city. Designed by the artist himself, it holds an important exhibition , which, through numerous works, allows you to take a trip through the career of the main considered a master of Surrealism. The site was extended with the Torre Galatea , where the artistic genius died. Another two museums complete Figueres' wide cultural offer: the Catalan Toy Museum , which exhibits an interesting collection of toys from different periods and the Empordà Museum , where you can penetrate the history and art of the county. All this will contribute to uncovering a town with a deep Catalan nature, as demonstrated by its being the home of the sardana, the typical Catalan dance.

Surrounding and cuisine

The excellent location of Figueres enables you to make interesting trips throughout the county. On the coast are picturesque places like Colera , a seaside village which has beautiful beaches like Garvet and Els Morts; Llançà , with a lively marina; Cadaqués , home of the Salvador Dalí House-Museum, and Port de la Selva , where the Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes is located. To the south of Cap de Creus is Roses , which preserves remains of the ancient Greek colony of Rhode, and Castelló d’Empuries , where the church of Santa María (10 th C.) is outstanding. This part of the Costa Brava has large protected areas. In the Gulf of Roses is the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park , an important ecological reserve and refuge for water birds. For its part, the Cap de Creus Natural Park is an excellent place from a natural point of view and a clear example of the appearance of the Costa Brava. The cuisine of Figueras combines raw materials from the sea and the mountains. From the nearby coast come fish , which are served boiled, baked, grilled or in sauce. Other recipes, like chicken or rabbit with spiny lobster and beef with vegetables, wild mushrooms or fruits, are also typical. To accompany these, you can choose any of the excellent wines and cavas labelled under the Ampurdán - Costa Brava Denomination of Origin . The popular "novell" (rosé) wine, as well as sweet wines and young reds should be mentioned.

Visit Figueres, Spain; a travel guide to the town of Figueres

Photo of Figueres

Visit Figueres

Figueres is in the province of Girona in the Catalonia region of Spain.

Figueres is a pleasant town with an attractive centre, a large castle and a café-lined 'rambla'. However it is for the Salvador Dali museum that large numbers of visitors come each year.

Indeed, the Salvador Dali Museum (Teatre-Museu Dali) is the most visited museum in Spain after the Prado in Madrid and the Guggenheim in Bilbao.

Explore Figueres

Spain This Way Comment: We are not particularly Salvador Dali fans but non the less were blown away by the Salvador Dali Museum at Figueres. Make sure you go to see it.

Salvador Dali Museum

There is a large 18th century castle, the Castell de Sant Ferran, in the town. It is, in fact, the largest castle in Europe! This is a popular place as you can walk (or jog) around its 3km perimeter. It offers excellent views over the sea. It is possible to look around the interior as well and there is a café inside.

Figueres Rambla is the main street in Figueres and like the Rambla in Barcelona it is a popular spot for meeting and sitting at one of the many pavement cafes to drink a coffee or eat lunch.

At the bottom of the Rambla is a painting on the floor, 'the Face of Dali' which is a popular homage to Salvador Dali.

The old streets around the Rambla are very pleasant to walk around and home to some great shopping.

Visit the Salvador Dali Museum

The Salvador Dali Theatre Museum, the Teatre-Museu Dali, is the largest surrealist object in the world. It was built by Dali on the ruins of a 19th century Theatre.

The building has a large glass dome and its edges are decorated by large egg shapes. It is, in its entirety, Dali's greatest work, and was created by Dali specifically to offer its visitors a unique visual experience.

On entering the museum the first area to visit is the courtyard and immediately you are struck by Salvador Dali's incredible imagination and surreal view on the world (if you hadn't already from the amazing exterior!).

In the courtyard a statue of a well-endowed female figure stands on a black Cadillac whilst the walls of this inner courtyard are decorated by golden mannequins.

The next room from here is known as the stage and is a huge room lit by the large glass sphere that you can see from the outside of the building. One wall is a huge window onto the courtyard and the other has a huge painting - from the very high ceiling to the floor. Another incredible space.

The rest of the museum contains many rooms with different collections of works and is a zany mix of exhibits. These cover a great range of his works from some of his earliest to some he created in the last years of his life.

These include: Port Alguer (1924), The Spectre of Sex-Appeal (1932), The Cosmic Athletes (1943) and Dawn, Noon, Afternoon and Evening (1979).

The museum also contains exhibits made specifically for the museum such as the Mae West Room and the Palace of the Wind.

Salvador Dali was born in Figueres and moved back here late in life. He is buried in a crypt in the museum. The museum is housed in the old theatre but Figueres suffered heavy bombing in the Spanish Civil war as it was the last Republican outpost to stand against Franco.

The theatre was badly damaged and remained a ruin for several decades before Dali bought it and converted it into the museum that we see today.

The museum is open from 10.30 to 18.00 hours from Oct to March and from 9.00 to 20.00 hours from April to September. It is closed on Mondays except in July, August and September.

Salvador Dali fans should also visit the Casa-Museu Castell Gala Dali, in the village of Pubol NE of Girona. This is the house of Dali's wife with whom he had a colourful relationship. It is also where Dali lived when Gala died.

The Casa-Museu Salvador Dali, the House-museum Salvador Dali, at Portlligat near Cadaques is where Dali and Gala lived and is well worth a visit to see how this unusual couple lived. Also be sure to visit Cadaques itself which is where Dali once lived and which inspired some of his paintings.

figueres places to visit

Planning a Figueres day trip from Barcelona is one of the best choices you can make when deciding where to visit from Spain’s second-largest city.

Though Barcelona day trip destinations like Montserrat and even Girona often outshine this petite Catalonian gem, Figueres is an excellent place to explore for those who want to experience a smaller city or are fans of the famed surrealist Salvador Dalí.

sFigueres is small in size but nevertheless a lovely city to visit and has a lot to offer tourists. From a number of interesting historic sites and museums to the countless tributes and allusions to Dalí, Figueres is a great destination for all those who choose to visit.

There are lots of things to do in Figueres, however, it’s recommended that you at least have some interest in Salvador Dalí before planning a trip to this city. As the artist’s hometown, there are lots of sites and things to do that have to do with the surrealist.

If this doesn’t deter you and you’re still keen to plan a day trip to Figueres from Barcelona, then look no further. Here I’ll outline how to get the most out of this small city in just one day.

Table of Contents

How to Get from Barcelona to Figueres

Figueres is located about 140 kilometres north of Barcelona and is actually situated quite close to the French border. Because of its proximity to the Catalonian capital, there are lots of ways that potential visitors can get to Figueres for a day that will suit almost all travellers needs and styles.

By Organised Tour

If you want to take the stress of route planning and itinerary mapping out of your trip from Barcelona to Figueres, then going on an organised tour from Barcelona is a great idea for you. There are countless options to choose from that will suit all kinds of travellers.

This full-day tour or this full-day tour will pick you up from Barcelona before taking you to Figueres, the coastal town of Cadaqués along with some other highlights of the Costa Brava.

Alternatively, if you aren’t interested in the Costa Brava but want to see more than just Figueres on your day out, this all-day tour will first take you to the lovely city of Girona before heading onto Figueres.

Though I would honestly recommend spending at least 2 days in Girona , this can be a good option for those who don’t have a lot of time but also want to see as much of Catalonia as possible.

Another option is this private tour if you prefer to not join an organised group.

Outside the Dali Museum in Figueres

If an organised tour isn’t for you, then getting to Figueres by car is one of the best options out there – especially if you’re keen to stop at the Castell de Sant Ferran at the beginning of your Figueres day trip.

You can reach Figueres in about 1.5 hours driving from Barcelona meaning that it is definitely an accessible distance for a day trip. Driving yourself also gives you the flexibility to tailor your own itinerary rather than having to be at the whim of a tour or bus and train timetables.

For instance, if you don’t care to visit the Castell de Sant Ferran, you can opt to spend the morning in the beautiful town of Besalú before heading onto Figueres and exploring the Dalí museum. Or you can head to the Costa Brava on your way back to Barcelona. The options are really endless.

If you need to rent a car while visiting Catalonia or for your day trip to Figueres, then consider booking through Rentalcars.com to find great deals across many major car rental companies.

Walls of Castell de Sant Ferran

If you don’t want to rent a car then going by train is an excellent option and is going to be the quickest way to get there. There are numerous connections between the two cities that leave at all different times throughout the day, so you are sure to find something that fits your schedule.

The journey time will take just under an hour and you can book train tickets online in advance . In fact, this is recommended as it can be a lot more affordable than if you book on the day of or at the train station.

Another option for getting to Figueres from Barcelona is by bus, however, it isn’t the best choice if you want to go independently. This is mostly because it is the longest option and can take over two hours to get from Barcelona to Figueres.

Buses also aren’t as frequent as trains and will end up costing roughly the same amount as a train ticket anyway. So if you want to use public transport then I would recommend taking the train to Figueres.

Dalí portrait on La Rambla

Figueres Day Trip Itinerary

If you’re only interested in visiting the Dalí museum and don’t care to head to the first stop on this itinerary (the Castell de Sant Ferran), then consider heading to the town of Besalú and/or Banyoles Lake before visiting Figueres in the afternoon.

This is easier to do if you have your own vehicle, but it can be a great way to visit some sites that many don’t take the time to in Catalonia.

Castell de Sant Ferran

The first stop on this itinerary is at the Castell de Sant Ferran. This 18th-century castle is located a bit outside of the Figueres centre and is really worth visiting if you want to explore a fascinating castle with very few other visitors. In fact, I believe if this castle were situated closer to Barcelona, it would be packed with tourists far more than it already is.

The castle was used for the military when it was originally constructed in the mid-18th Century. Now, it has been historically restored and operates as a museum.

The castle is open for visitors at varying hours throughout the year, so be sure to check when it is open before you plan to visit. Note that it is closed on Mondays except during the summer season. You should plan to spend at least an hour here.

Castell de Sant Ferran

After spending time exploring the castle, it’s time to head into the beautiful city centre of Figueres and wander down the main thoroughfare of the city – La Rambla.

This is not to be confused with La Rambla in Barcelona, in fact, you will likely notice that major streets in the vast majority of Catalonian towns and cities are called La Rambla. It simply means “the boulevard” in English.

We visited Figueres in the winter months just ahead of Christmas and this is where the main Christmas market was set up. There are lots of shops and cafes lining the street where you can pop into and spend some time people-watching.

You can also spot the Dalí portrait on La Rambla which is as unique as the eponymous artist. Basically, it is a spread out portrait of Dalí on the ground that is then reflected in a mirrored pillar that looms over it. It’s quite interesting.

Christmas market on La Rambla in Figueres

Església de Sant Pere

Moving more into the old town (and make sure you take the time to wander around a bit in the beautiful side streets), you will inevitably find your way to the imposing Església de Sant Pere or Saint Peter’s Church.

This is the main church in Figueres and it is a gorgeous building. It is also the church where, you guessed it, Salvador Dalí was baptised! There are very few stops on this Figueres itinerary that don’t involve Dalí and this Church is not one of them.

Església de Sant Pere

Monumento a Salvador Dalí

Just a bit further down from the Church and not far from the Dalí museum is the interesting Monument a Salvador Dalí – or the Salvador Dalí Monument.

This is not to be confused with the portrait of Dalí located on La Rambla, however, as this monument is a sculpture designed by Dalí himself and not a monument of Salvador Dalí. Nevertheless, this is another great testament to this influential surrealist and is very much worth spotting out when in Figueres.

Monumento a Salvador Dalí

Now that you’ve seen quite a number of incredible sites in Figueres, it’s likely that you’ve worked up quite an appetite. Lunch is the biggest meal of the day in Spain and there are countless great restaurants in the Figueres where you can get some delicious, local food at reasonable prices.

If you’re visiting on a weekday, have a look for a place offering a menú del día or a daily menu where you can get a starter, main, dessert and drink all at an affordable set price. Even if you happen to be in Figueres on a weekend or public holiday, there are still countless options available for lunch.

We ate at the delicious La Taverna del Barri Vell and had a wonderful meal for a reasonable price – especially considering the atmosphere and the portion sizes!

Fideua from La Taverna del Barri Vell

Museu del Joguet de Catalunya

After you’ve eaten lunch, take the time to head to one of Figueres’ famous museums – the Museu del Joguet de Catalunya or the Toy Museum of Catalonia.

This is an especially good place to visit if you’re travelling with children. Here you will see a number of different displays of toys and games from different eras throughout history.

The museum is open from Tuesday through Saturday (it is closed on Sunday and Monday) and general entry is €7 per person. There are reduced prices available for students, seniors etc.

Museu del Joguet de Catalunya

Teatré-Museu Dalí

Make the final stop of your day a visit to the top attraction in the town – the Dalí Theatre-Museum. The reason I list this museum as the final stop and not an earlier one is that, in our experience, the museum is a lot less busy in the afternoon when a lot of organised tour groups have left the city already.

This museum is something that needs to be entered with an open mind, as it was put together by Dalí himself and very much seems like that.

Filled with fascinating and interesting artwork (some that involve coins to be inserted so that they move and do bizarre things), you do need to devote a bit of time to exploring this bizarre treasure trove of this influential modern artist. Plan to spend about 1.5-2 hours here.

Entry into the museum is on the pricier end at €17 per person for general entry. There are reduced prices available for those who qualify and you can purchase tickets online in advance.

If you would like some guidance when visiting the Dalí museum, then this guided tour of the Teatré-Museu Dalí will help you make the most of your visit to the museum. Alternatively, this small-group tour also includes a walking tour of Figueres as well as a guided visit to the Teatré-Museu Dalí.

Inside the Dali Museum

Planning a Figueres day trip from Barcelona is one of the best places you can visit from the Catalonian capital. Especially for fans of modern art and the surrealist movement, Figueres makes for an excellent day out from the hustle and bustle of Barcelona.

Thank you for your post! I had thought about checking out Girona in the morning (although I know it’s worth a few days, we don’t more time to spend this trip) and the Dali Museum in the afternoon. But it’s good to know there is plenty to fill a day in Figueres if we opt for that. It’s certainly the less complicated option, in terms of booking trains.

We will also be visiting in December close to the holidays. Do you find the museum to be fairly busy/crowded that time of year?

Hi Erika – the museum may be a bit crowded close to the holidays but they do limit entry so it’s not too packed inside. You can book your tickets in advance if you’re concerned about this 🙂

Top Things I Wish I'd Known Before My Trip to Figueres, Spain #figueresspain #salvadordalispain #barcelonadaytrip #whattodofigueres

Where Is Figueres Spain?

Figueres Spain is in the province of Girona in Catalonia Spain. It’s about 137 km away from Barcelona (about an hour and a half drive). It’s also about 50 minutes passed Girona, the city, which is a must visit from Barcelona !

Figueres Spain has easy day trip potential from both Barcelona and the South of France and you don’t really need to spend any longer in this Spanish city than one day. Figueres is actually closer to the South of France than it is to Barcelona. This means that it actually has a very strong French speaking community in Figueres.

It’s also in the Catalonian region in Spain which means they speak primarily Catalan over Spanish.

How To Get From Barcelona To Figueres

Visiting Figueres from Barcelona is a very easy day trip to do. There are four ways to get from Barcelona to Figueres: train, bus, drive, or go on an organized tour.

The easiest way to get from Barcelona to Figueres is to take the train. It’s relatively cheap and the train leaves a few times throughout the day. The train also isn’t much longer than driving, just under an hour. Once you arrive in Figueres, the train station is located a short walk from the city centre.

The cheapest but longest option to is to take the bus from Barcelona to Figueres.

You can also rent a car and drive to Figueres, but don’t forget about parking once you arrive and dealing with driving in a foreign country.

Finally, if you don’t want to deal with transportation and getting lost in a new city, you can also go on an organized tour from Barcelona to Figueres . It’s typically the most expensive option, but it’s also the most stress free.

Need A Place To Stay? Figueres Hotel Recommendations

I didn’t stay overnight in Figueres, we went back to Barcelona. But if you’re looking to enjoy some of the nightlife, book a place to stay the night in Figueres Spain. Here are some recommendations I found in the city centre.

Apartment With Views & Location : The Museum Apartments is next door to the Dali Museum – it doesn’t get better than that! You can book a room with either a private terrace, patio, or balcony or a view! This is also ideal if you’re travelling with family or friends, rooms can sleep up to 7 people! See room rates & availability .

Hotel : If you’re looking for a more classic hotel, stay at the Duran Hotel in Figueres Spain. You also have the Duran restaurant downstairs where Dali himself used to eat! See room rates & availability .

What Is Figueres Known For? Connection To Salvador Dalí

The main thing figueres is known for is being the birthplace of Salvador Dalí. He wasn’t just born there though, he lived and breathed Figueres. He lived there with his wife and was buried there.

But today, it’s mainly known for the museum that Dalí opened up in Figueres. It’s also where he set up his museum – The Dalí Theatre-Museum – with the largest collection of his work.

PSA: Only Visit If You’re Interested in Salvador Dalí

I can’t stress this enough! If you visit Figueres with this in mind, then you won’t be disappointed. There are a few other museums you can visit, but realistically, how many museums can you visit in one day?

There’s also a fortress on the edge of town which is interesting, don’t get me wrong, but again, it’s nothing that you can’t see in other European cities (shoutout to Namur and Dinant in Belgium ).

And other than that… the rest is all focused around Salvador Dalí.

Dalí Attractions To See in Figueres

There are the two main Figueres Spain Dalí museums to visit, but there are also some hidden gems that you should see.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum is the main attraction that you should be going to Figueres for. It’s the main museum that’s really unique to the town. Of course, you can find Dalí originals elsewhere, but this is one of the largest collections. The museum itself is also a Dalí masterpiece, it was designed specifically to showcase his work.

You can also visit the Dalí Jewels Museums to see a collection of the jewellery he designed. Attached to the museum (in the red part of the building) is where Gala (his wife) and Dalí lived. Make sure to find the plaque next to the tower it’ll answer all your questions about the building (like why there are eggs on top of it).

Figueres isn’t just where Dalí lived as an adult, if you walk a bit further down Las Ramblas you can see his childhood home where Dalí lived until he was 12. On the way there’s a cool monument to Dalí in the centre of Las Ramblas that you shouldn’t miss!

Tips For Visiting The Figueres Spain Dalí Museum

As I said, the Dalí Theatre-Museum is the main attraction in Figueres Spain and because of that, it’s PACKED. I swear the town feels like a ghost town until you walk inside and realize this is where everyone is.

You’d think the number of people they let inside would be more controlled because you have to buy a timed ticket. This isn’t the case. It’s absolute chaos inside (even during low season), most of the rooms and passageways are small and there are just too many people to fit.

Unfortunately, this made the museum a bit less enjoyable for us because we weren’t used to this many people. If you want to try to avoid the chaos don’t book a morning ticket. The museum was busy all day, but I noticed the morning was completely sold out. So if you want to try and avoid the crowds, book an afternoon time slot (or book a guided tour of the museum with a pre-booked ticket with Viator here ).

I also recommend grabbing a seat in the outdoor space of the museum (the first section in the centre). There are seats all along the wall. It’s a good way to get some space from everyone to be able to take your time appreciating all the detail in the space.

Tips For Visiting Figueres Spain Dalí Museum #2: Dalí Jewels

Dalí Jewels is another Figueres Spain Dalí museum to visit. It’s the complete opposite of the Dalí Theatre-Museum though. You don’t need timed entry and no one seems to visit, so it’s also way less crowded. You’re actually able to take your time admiring his precious jewels.

Heads up though, it’s quite dark inside the museum and getting inside is only a bit terrifying. You have to go through windowless revolving doors and for a second it becomes pitch black… but it’s worth it!

Tips For Buying Tickets To Figueres Spain Dalí Museum

If you’re interested in visiting both the Dalí Theatre-Museum and the Dalí Jewels, buy a combined ticket.

You can buy your tickets  online in advance  or at the door. If you need to go in the morning I recommend buying online because those are quicker to sell out. But, if you’re a student they offer discounted rates at the door that they don’t show you online.

You can also book tickets in advance with a guided tour through Viator here .

Tickets are timed for entry every 30 minutes. I recommend buying for 30 minutes before you think you’ll want to go (i.e. if you want to go at 3:00 buy for 2:30). You have the full 30 minutes from your ticket entry to go in but they won’t let you in before it. It was annoying when we arrived 15 minutes before our ticket entry time and had to wait outside in line.

In order to avoid some of the crowded chaos, I recommend arriving 15 minutes passed your entry time.  Everyone is arriving at the same time otherwise, and there’s always a line up to get in. Arriving 15 minutes later gives people time to get ahead of you, so hopefully, there will be fewer people when you get there.

Figueres Spain Things To Do Not Related To Dalí

There isn’t much else to do in Figueres Spain that isn’t connected to Salvador Dalí. There are a few other museums you can visit, or the second largest attraction in the city, The Castell De Sant Ferran.

Other Museums To Visit

There are so many museums aside from the Dalí-Theatre-Museum but there are three main recommendations. The  Toy Museum of Catalonia ,  Museu de l’Empordà   (art museum), and  Technical Museum of the Empordà .

I think they’re all very well done, but after visiting two Dalí museums, we were kind of museum-ed out for the day!

What To Do In Figueres? Visiting The Castell De Sant Ferran

When researching what to do in Figueres, the Castell de Sant Ferran was always suggested. It looks like it would be a lot further than it actually is so I originally didn’t think it was doable in a day. But the Castell de Sant Ferran only a 20-minute walk from the Dalí Theatre-Museum.

Other than exploring the grounds on your own, you can also go on a guided visit underground and to the exterior parts of the fortress (you have to  book in advance  for those tours though).

Our plan was to visit the Fortress in the afternoon, but unfortunately in the winter, it closes at 3:00 P.M. ( and Google isn’t aware of this ).

If this happens to you, it’s still worth walking up to the fortress. Even if it’s closed, you can still walk around the grounds, there’s a path that takes you all around the fortress. You can sort of peak inside, and you also get some skyline views of Figueres and the Province of Girona.

Tips For Spending A Day Figueres… What To Know

There are a few things that I wish that I’d known before I visited Figueres for the day. I was thrown off guard by quite a few things that I wasn’t expecting.

English is Useless!

Figueres is a 45-minute train ride from Barcelona, ( stopping at Girona along the way ). But, more tourists actually visit the city from France. How do I know that? Well, I noticed a lot more people were speaking French than Spanish or even Catalan, and NOT ONE person spoke English.

If you don’t know either French, Spanish, or Catalan (i.e. only English) it’s going to be very hard for you to get around here. This was a total shock to us. In every restaurant (even in the main tourist area), our English was useless and we had to resort to French (which is good because it could use the practice!). We only wanted to know if they accepted card and the employees had no idea what we were saying.

Don’t Trust Google When Visiting Figueres Spain!

Another thing to watch out for when visiting Figueres for the day are the opening hours. Because it’s not exactly a big city, Google isn’t on top of their game with their information.

Most stores have a 4-hour lunch break in the middle of the day from around 12:00 to 4:00 P.M.. But the bigger issue comes up when you’re visiting in the low season. Most attractions have different hours for fall, winter, and summer . Google won’t be aware of the change in hours so be sure to double-check the websites and not to rely on Google.

It’s Far From The Prettiest Spanish Town

On most day trips, once I’ve visited all the main attractions I’m able to fill my time photographing the more picturesque parts of town. Unfortunately, there isn’t much to see in Figueres Spain.

First off, the town is so small that you end up walking in a circle most of the time. There aren’t any hidden streets to discover or beautiful architecture to admire.

On my exploration of the city, I managed to find some nice fountains and a sculpture of Saint George! Plus make sure not to miss a really cool Salvador Dalí monument in the middle of Las Ramblas!

Not The Place To Come For Local Shopping

At the end of the day, I also usually like to check out the local shopping… from what I saw it was all bigger chain stores. I guess the city is so small that in the limited space they have they want the name brands.

If you’re looking for local shopping, you know, stores you can’t find back home (or even back in Barcelona), then don’t rely on Figueres for that. There were very limited boutique stores that I wanted to go into.

Where To Eat in Figueres Spain?

We managed to eat a lot of food on our day trip to Figueres. It was a good way to pass the time (because there isn’t much to do there and all the stores close in the afternoon).

In the main city centre you can stop at either Calid Café or El Cafito for a quick coffee break. We saw Calid Café serving a delicious Spanish style lunch but they understood the least amount of English out of anyone here, and they won’t start serving lunch a minute before their lunch break starts.

Lizarran For Lunch

After we tried to eat at Calid Café for lunch, we ended up at Lizarran for some traditional tapas. They serve pinxtos, the ones with the toothpicks.

It’s a fun scene because they announce when they bring out new pintxos and they’ll come around offering it to each table. You have to be careful here because the bill can really add up. You keep the toothpicks from each pintxos you take, they’re about €2.00 – €2.50 each.

I’d try a few tapas but also order a plate to fill up. You also have to order their patatas bravas – delicious!

Pau For Coffee/Tea Break

I love this place! It’s a bit out of the touristy zone but not too far out of the way. They have everything here from coffee and tea, alcohol, to simple (but tasty) sandwiches. Our favourite though was ordering Spanish hot chocolate and melindros (sponge cookies)!

I am sorry you miss all the interesting architecture in the city mostly from the 19th C. with its beautiful façades and freemasonry symbols, artdeco and avant-garde. Also the American houses built in the 50's. Unfortunately Dalí shadows everything else and I understand why you were not able to discover those Hope you have the chance to come back another time. I'll be happy to help you with the discovery.

Monday 7th of August 2023

thank you very much for your comments and pictures. i think i read that some other spots in Spain won't let you in past the time on your ticket so i'd be concerned about showing up 15 minutes late at the Dali museum.

Very interesting article with good insights. I will be staying in Figueres for three nights as a jumping off point for the Dali museum and environs, including Cadeques, Besalu, and Barcelona. Do you have a reliable taxi service to recommend? We will be in the center of town (Carrer Monturiol) and want a taxi to take us to Figueres Vilafont train station for a morning train to Barcelona--without being late. Thanks for any advice!

That sounds like a wonderful trip! Unfortunately, I don't have a taxi company that we used. When we visited Figures we walked to and from the train station to the city. Sorry I couldn't be more help

11 fun and interesting things to do in Figueres

The city of Figueres (Costa Brava, Spain) is the birthplace of Salvador Dalí and an interesting place to visit. These are the best things to do in Figueres.

About Figueres

Located in northeastern Spain, Figueres is a charming city known for its rich history, culture, and art. As the birthplace of famous surrealist artist Salvador Dalí, Figueres attracts thousands of tourists every year who want to immerse themselves in the unique atmosphere and beauty of this city.

Why should you visit Figueres? Not only does it offer an insight into Dalí’s mind, but it is also a special journey through Spanish traditions, with cozy squares, charming alleys, and local delicacies waiting to be discovered. In short, Figueres has something for everyone and is a must-see during a vacation in the Costa Brava. In this blog post, I will show you some of the most beautiful sights in Figueres and share some practical tips.

Things to do in Figueres

What to do in Figueres? Although it’s not a big city, you won’t be bored! These are the most beautiful sights and the best things to do in Figueres and its surroundings.

Teatre-Museu Dalí

An absolute must-see when visiting Figueres is the famous Teatre-Museu Dalí (Dalí Theater-Museum). This is also the reason I visited Figueres itself, because I find the artist’s works very interesting. Designed by Salvador Dalí himself, this unique museum houses the world’s largest collection of the artist’s works.

The building itself is an artwork with lots of interesting sights. In the rooms, you can admire his surreal masterpieces. It feels like a special journey through the life and work of Dalí. He is even buried in the museum.

Tip! The Dalí Theater-Museum is the most popular attraction in Figueres and it might take a while to reach the entrance tanks to a long line of art lovers that want to visit the museum. Therefore, it’s smart to buy your ticket in advance so you can skip the line. Order your ticket for the Dalí Theatre-Museum here.

Teatro Museum Dali in Figueres

Església Sant Pere

Església Sant Pere is a beautiful Gothic church and is an important religious monument in Figueres. Dating back to the 14th century, this church feels like a haven of peace amid the bustling city life. Its location next to the Dalí Museum adds to the contrast.

Inside, the somewhat plain interior is undoubtedly striking, but it makes the brightly colored stained-glass windows stand out more. There are also several beautiful works of art and altarpieces on display in the church. Of course, the Església Sant Pere also has a connection to Dalí, as the artist was baptized here.

Església Sant Pere in Figueres

The birthplace of Dalí

One place I, unfortunately, missed during my visit to Figueres but is definitely on my list for next time is Casa natal d’en Salvador Dalí, or the birthplace of Dalí.

Located in the old town of Figueres, this picturesque house is where the famous surrealist artist came into the world on May 11, 1904. The building itself is a visual feast with its traditional Catalan architecture. As you wander through the rooms, you will learn more about Dalí’s early life.

Original objects, family photos, and memorabilia offer a tangible connection to the artist’s younger years. The birthplace is more than a historical site; it is a window into the formative years of a genius.

Check the official website for tickets and opening hours.

Portraits of Salvador Dali

If you’re looking for relaxation, and nature during your Figueres city trip, Parc Bosc is the perfect place to visit. This beautiful city park features green spaces, walking paths, and playgrounds for children. A nice place to enjoy a picnic or take a quiet walk.

Castell de Sant Ferran

For lovers of history, a visit to the impressive Castell de Sant Ferran (Sant Ferran Castle) is well worthwhile. This eighteenth-century fortress was once the largest military building in the world and offers breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings. Join a guided tour to learn more about the castle’s fascinating history.

Admission is €5 per person. Check the official website for opening hours.

Museu del Joguet de Catalunya

If you are interested in toys and games, this museum is for you! The Museu del Joguet de Catalunya displays an extensive collection of historical toys from different eras. A fun and educational experience for young and old alike.

The museum is currently closed for renovations. The expected opening date is March 15, 2024. Check the website for more information.

Spot the works of art on the street

What particularly surprised me myself was the large number of works of art you find in the streets of Figueres. Among the historic buildings, modern sculptures are frequently found, which gives an incredibly nice effect. Extraordinary to discover them!

Special works of art in Figueres

Plaça de l’Ajuntament

The central square of Figueres is in the middle of the old town and this is the perfect place to enjoy local life and the vibrant city life. Here you will find cozy cafes, restaurants and stores where you can enjoy delicious dishes and local specialties.

Plaça del Mercat de Figueres

Do you love markets and enjoy seeing where the locals shop? Then visit the Mercat Municipal on Plaça del Mercat de Figueres. This is a half open, half covered market, where you can buy fresh produce such as vegetables, fruits, fish, and meats. Also, be sure to sample some local delicacies to treat your taste buds!

Take a day trip to Girona

The beautiful city of Girona is just 40 kilometers south of Figueres and this is truly a picture to behold. You can get wonderfully lost in the narrow streets of this medieval city, especially the Jewish quarter is a maze with a different surprise on every street corner.

The imposing cathedral defines Girona’s skyline and it too is great to see. It is not surprising that the cathedral and the streets of Girona were used as a filming location for the series Game of Thrones , as it really feels like you are going back in time here.

Take a day trip to the coast

The coast of the Costa Brava is incredibly beautiful with cozy fishing villages, beautiful coves, and hidden beaches. If you want to escape the city for a while, you can very easily take the train from Figueres to Llançà (only 25 minutes) to enjoy the Mediterranean sun with a nice breeze.

This is also a good destination for hiking enthusiasts, as along the coast runs the scenic Camí de Ronda , and you can also go on beautiful walks in the mountains of Serra de Rodes.

Figueres has much to offer if you are looking for a fun city break that combines art, history, and relaxation. These tips will give you a good starting point to make the most of your visit to this beautiful city. Have fun!

It is a testament to Dalí’s enduring popularity that his eponymous museum, in the middle of Figueres, 35km northeast of Girona, is the most visited sight in Spain after Madrid’s Prado and Bilbao’s Guggenheim. There’s more to Figueres, of course, but you wouldn’t immediately know it from the crowds tripping over themselves to get to the museum. Native son Dalí returned to Figueres specifically to create this homage to Surrealism, and what an homage it is: wonderfully bizarre and cheekily interactive, the museum is all you’d expect from the world’s most celebrated Surrealist.

Teatre-Museu Dalí

By all means make the museum your first stop – but leave yourself some time to roam Figueres afterwards, and enjoy the pleasant capital of the Alt Empordà region. Cutting a wide swath through the centre of town is La Rambla de Figueres, a graceful, leafy pedestrian street lined with modern houses and outdoor cafés. The Museu de l’Empordà features local archeological finds and the nearby Castell de Sant Ferran is a massive fortification on sprawling grounds.

Hidden Spain - From Barcelona to Basque Country

Hidden Spain - From Barcelona to Basque Country

Do you want to explore highlights in Spain while staying in nature at the same time? Look no further. Start your Spanish adventure in Barcelona before heading off to the mountains - drive your rental car to Andorra and further on to Basque Country. Decide between driving yourself or guided tours.

One thing is certain: you won’t have trouble spotting the Teatre-Museu Dalí. Just look for a roof topped with giant eggs and a red facade with protruding bread loaves. Housed in a former theatre – which is particularly apt, for this most theatrical of artists – the museum is designed around a large courtyard with white ceramic sinks and gold mannequins inspired by Oscar statues. Light streams in to the building through a transparent, geodesic dome ceiling that resembles the eye of a fly, in a nod to Dalí’s fixation with insects. Incidentally, the artist had no problem with flies, but was supposedly repulsed by ants, which he depicted crawling out of eyeballs and such in his paintings.

Dalí created the museum to be an all-round sensory – and surreal – experience. Look through binoculars to see Gala Nude Looking at the Sea Which at Twenty Metres is Transformed into a Portrait of Abraham Lincoln, or revive a “dead” body in a coffin made of circuit boards. And check out The Face of Mae West That Can Be Used as a Drawing Room, in which Mae’s giant nose has a fireplace (complete with logs) built into each nostril, and her fleshy red lips are a couch.

The Sala de Tresor houses many of Dalí’s better-known works, including The Spectre of Sex Appeal, which explores his famous sex phobia. Other emblematic works include Soft Self-Portrait with Fried Bacon, in which Dalí’s dripping visage is held up by little sticks, and Venus de Milo with Drawers.

Dalí, fittingly, is buried in his fantastical museum. By 1984, he had moved to the nearby Torre Galtea, where he died in 1989. His body now lies behind a simple granite slab in a basement gallery of the museum. The museum ticket includes entry to the nearby Dalí Joies exhibit, featuring jewels designed by Dalí.

17 Things Every College Freshman Needs To Know Before Heading Off To Campus

figueres places to visit

Sending our babies off to college comes with a lot of emotion — usually sadness on our end, and excitement on theirs. It's hard knowing that our little ones are all grown up and leaving the nest. But knowing that we've set them up for the best and most successful freshman year can make us parents feel a little better.

With these 17 tips, every college kid will be super prepared to enter school ready to give it their all — and have some fun while doing it.

Mom talking to her teenage daughter

Don't Skip the Obvious Stuff

Parents should impart as much wisdom on their kids as they can — even the things that seem obvious. For example, when I was a freshman, I didn't know that juice needed to be refrigerated since it's initially not sold in the refrigerated section. That's how I accidentally drank moldy apple juice during my first year of college. Sadly, we can't know what we've never been taught.

Teen putting money in a piggy bank

Prepare Finances

Money is a huge thing for college kids to wrap their minds around. Maybe they're taking out loans, getting their first credit card, and learning how to budget. Try to set them up with the basics so they understand how loan interest works, how to build credit responsibly, and how to stretch their funds each semester.

Mom and teen daughter talking

Get Into Tough Topics

Prior to leaving for school, parents should take time to talk to their teens about uncomfortable topics like drugs, alcohol, and sex . Prepare them to deal with those things safely.

Make sure they know where they can get Narcan if they need it for their friends, make sure they understand that alcohol and prescription drugs can't be mixed, make sure they understand that consent is "yes means yes" and that people who are intoxicated can't really give proper consent.

They're tough subjects, but so important.

Pink toolbox

Toolboxes and First Aid Kits

Every college kid could use a simple tool box and a first aid kit . A hammer, screwdriver, tape measure, and band-aids. These are the kinds of things we don't need until we really do, and it's nice to be prepared for any unexpected moments.

As TikToker @skzzolno pointed out in a video, for many girls, being gifted a pink toolbox is a rite of passage — we're all bonded by our matching sets.

Plus, these kits will last students well into adulthood.

College students in a workout class

Take Advantage of Campus Resources

College can be expensive, so taking advantage of everything the campus offers is the best way to get our money's worth. Many colleges offer counseling, health care services, on-campus gyms, and exercise classes. Find out what's available, and make use of it. In the real world, all of that adds up quickly — so getting it for "free" is nice.

Easy Cooking Tips

For the teens who haven't cooked much before heading off on their own, the 5 Ingredient College Cookbook is a fun way to inspire meals that don't require a ton of expertise. Additionally, an air fryer is a great dorm room cooking tool that can make a variety of foods.

Teenage boy grocery shopping

Grocery Shopping

For college freshmen who have never really had to be in charge of the grocery list, practice with them before they go so they know how to spot good deals, which store brand items are just as good as the name brand, and so on. Also, if they shop for groceries off campus, things will likely be cheaper. This may be a good time for them to get a Costco membership or something similar.

Woman holding a vote sticker

Turning 18 comes with a major responsibility: voting . Students should make a voting plan and register either in their home state and ask for a mail-in ballot, or register in the state where they go to school and head to the polls there.

Either way, it's an experience that shouldn't be overlooked even if they're busy getting settled in — and registration deadlines come up quickly in some states.

Teen girl taking clothes out of the washer

The Importance of Doing Laundry

We need to make sure our kiddos can do laundry before they leave the nest, and we should know that the way we teach them is the way they'll do it forever … so no pressure.

If kids don't know better, they'll throw everything into one load and stain everything or shrink things. Make sure the teen has enough sheet sets that even if they miss a wash, they can — at the least — put a fresh set on while the other is dirty.

Girl wearing headphone while using a laptop

Noise Canceling Headphones

Not only are noise canceling headphones helpful for dealing with loud roommates, they can just help with the general overstimulation that college campuses can foster. There are people everywhere, all the time, and they're often noisy. Even if there's nowhere to physically retreat to, the students can escape into a somewhat quieter headspace with some good headphones.

Two girls moving in together

Roomie Respect

For kids who aren't used to sharing a room pre-college, having a roommate can be an adjustment. Nobody has to be besties with their roommate, but being courteous makes the living situation tolerable. Don't set super loud alarms, ask before inviting a bunch of people over, and keep the space tidy.

Students in a college class

Practice Professionalism

College is essentially just a practice session for real life, and students should take it seriously. Sure, not all classes may take attendance, but that's not an excuse to skip. Students need to show up and get the education that's being paid for — otherwise they're just shortchanging themselves. Additionally, don't spend all the nights and weekends out and partying. Get work done, learn things, prepare for a real career.

College gives back what students give to it — so it's really up to them to make the most of the experience.

College student meeting with the professor

Go to Office Hours

Even for teens who don't feel like they need help with the actual classwork, office hours with their professors can still be valuable. One day they may need a letter of recommendation, and it's hard for a professor to write one for a student they've never really interacted with.

College dorm room

Dorms Are Often Gross

There's no getting around it: dorms are usually pretty gross. Encourage your kid to wear shower shoes in the bathrooms to avoid getting foot fungus. Also, remind them that cleaning up their food will make it less likely they'll deal with cockroaches or mice — I had both, because my roommate was a slob. Gifting teens a cleaning basket with wipes, sprays, and maybe a stick vacuum would go a long way.

Two college girls walking and talking

Make a Friend in Every Class

Getting to know at least one person from every class means that even if a student does need to miss a day, they have someone they can borrow notes from. Plus, if the teacher ever assigns a group project, there's a built-in partner already there who can be trusted.

Teenage girl at the airport

Get a Ticket Home

Especially for students going to school out of state, once the initial excitement wears off, homesickness can set in really quickly. Before leaving them to get settled in for the school year, parents can have a conversation about when they'll come home next. Maybe fly them home for a random weekend in October or make sure they know they can come back for Thanksgiving.

Just a little something for them to look forward to when things inevitably get tough.

Mom hugging teen daughter

We'll Always Be Here

College kids often want to portray that they're super independent, but make sure they know that at the end of the day you're there for them. If they have a dumb question about cleaning or just want to vent, they can always call. And if they're close enough to visit, the washer and dryer are always open for them — just like our hearts.

Black Desert Resort, with its signature lava, is hustling to get ready for PGA visit

‘they said this place is really going to pop on tv,’ says black desert communications director ashley dove.

figueres places to visit

By Lee Benson

“I think we’re lost,” says Ashley Dove as she searches for an opening that will get us back up to street level.

“Did I take a wrong turn? Do you know where we are?” she asks Luke Gwilliam, the security guard who is accompanying us.

“Nope,” he answers, “this is only my second day.”

So where are we? A coal mine? A cave in Thailand? The catacombs of Paris?

Not even close. We are in Ivins, the little town northwest of St. George, getting a site tour of Black Desert Resort.

Maybe you’ve heard of Black Desert. It’s gotten a lot of publicity lately for securing the rights to host a PGA golf tournament this fall, the first time the Tour has come to Utah since 1963. Not only that, next year Black Desert is scheduled to host an LPGA event, something that’s never been done in Utah.

All that will take place on the Tom Weiskopf/Phil Smith-designed championship golf course cut out of the black lava rock that is ubiquitous out here in this corner of the desert. The course has been finished and playable for a little over a year — enough time to earn reviews like “Wow!” and “Spectacular!” and, most often, “Unique.”

The world has a lot of golf courses, but few, if any, carved out of lava.

When reps from the PGA Tour came to Ivins last year to meet developer Patrick Manning, the visionary behind transforming a moonscape into a golf resort, and take a tour of the course, they cast one look at the green grass, blue lakes, white sand traps and black basalt rock and were instantly sold.

figueres places to visit

“They said this place is going to really pop on TV,” says Ashley, who is the head of Black Desert marketing and communications. “The world’s going to see scenes they haven’t seen before.”

But that won’t be until October; right now we’re just trying to find the pro shop.

We’ve been wandering through an underground parking garage that stretches out to the horizon in all directions. For all I know, we could already be in Nevada.

There’s enough space to park at least 3,000 cars, Ashley reports. But there are zero cars parked at the moment, and that’s because the parking garage, like most everything else at Black Desert other than the golf course, isn’t finished.

“There’s a lot of moving pieces we’re getting lined up for the PGA event,” is how Ashley euphemistically puts it as she finally finds the stairway that will take us up to the next level.

Despite all the unpainted sheet rock, the scaffolds and the cabinets lying on the floor, the plan, assures Ashley, is to have the majority of what is called the resort center completed by the time the golfers — and the TV cameras — arrive the second week of October.

That’s no small goal for a building that consists of 45,000 square feet of meeting and convention space, a 15,000 square foot spa and a 25,000-square foot pro shop.

Also, the plan is to have enough of the condo and hotel units finished to be able to house a portion of the professional golfers, PGA staff and broadcast teams.

At completion, Black Desert will have 800 “keys,” says Ashley, counting hotel rooms and condominium units combined. That will make it the largest resort hotel in southern Utah, by far, and one of the biggest in all of Utah, rivaling Snowbird with its 882 rooms.

The finished resort, at a final price tag of $2 billion, will also include Boardwalk Village — a pedestrian walkway with numerous restaurants and retail shops, although that project isn’t likely to be finished for another two years.

All this, in a lava field the Latter-day Saint pioneers who settled here 165 years ago couldn’t figure how to get their wagons across.

The rapid growth, Ashley concedes, isn’t met with universal praise. Some residents of Ivins, a town that for years had less than 2,000 people, might look askance at a project that, when fully built, will house more than that all by itself.

But the intent of Patrick Manning, she notes, is to elevate not just Ivins but all of the St. George area by providing a gathering place the likes of which the area hasn’t seen before.

It will also employ a lot of people. At full strength, Ashley estimates the resort will employ upwards of 1,000 people. Already, it’s hired nearly 400 to get ready for the golf tournament.

Gazing at the black-and-green landscape outside the unfinished pro shop window, Ashley muses, “I’d have never thought, ‘perfect place for a resort,’ but Patrick did. He sees things. I don’t think anyone initially believed him in the beginning; it looks uninhabitable.”

The tour over, Ashley guides Luke and me toward the stairs that earlier brought us into the daylight.

“We’ll back out through the garage,” she says, “I won’t get us lost this time. They haven’t had to send a search party out for me yet.”

Bradford solid, but defending champs in deep hole

Dave Sessions

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers’ precarious position in the standings is not quite orders of magnitude worse than it was before their 3-2 loss to the Twins on Thursday night . But the defending World Series champions now see double digits in the standings in two conspicuously troublesome places.

Falling to 10 games below .500 and 10 games behind in the American League West symbolized the Rangers’ “tougher climb” to playoff contention, to use manager Bruce Bochy’s words.

“You never know in this game -- that’s why you keep going hard, and that’s what we will do,” Bochy said. “Sure, it makes it more difficult to go to 10 games. A lot has to happen. No. 1, what has to happen is, we’ve got to win ballgames.”

The Rangers were close to doing that Thursday at Globe Life Field thanks to a dogged outing from starter Cody Bradford , who allowed two earned runs in six innings. But closer Kirby Yates, entering a tie game in the top of the ninth, walked two Minnesota batters with one out and gave up the winning run on Carlos Santana’s sacrifice fly.

Yates’ slip-up proved costly as the Rangers’ offense, which had been mostly absent since the first few minutes of the game, went down in order in the ninth. The Texas lineup failed to produce anything after the first two hitters scored the Rangers’ only runs of the night. Marcus Semien led off with an an infield single and Josh Smith walked, setting up Adolis García’s RBI single and Josh Jung’s sacrifice fly.

“We just couldn’t get much going after the first inning,” Bochy said. “We had a couple chances there ... it’s a tough one.”

What solace the Rangers had Thursday night came from Bradford, who battled deeper into a game, in terms of pitches, than he ever had in his previous 13 career starts. He finished with 104 pitches, including 29 in a grueling sixth inning.

Bradford walked the leadoff hitter in that frame and needed nine pitches to strike out the next hitter, Willi Castro, who fouled off four two-strike pitches before Bradford got him swinging on a fastball up in the zone. Kyle Farmer singled, but Bochy stayed with Bradford. The manager’s faith in the young lefty paid off -- eventually -- as Bradford had to battle through 12 more pitches to get the final two outs on fly balls.

Bochy was practically standing on the balls of his feet on the top step of the dugout, and the Rangers had reliever José Leclerc ready. Still, the manager let the 26-year-old from nearby Aledo keep going.

“I have so much confidence in him,” Bochy said. “His pitches were getting up there but his stuff was still good ... he made pitches when he had to at the end of his rope, 100 pitches, in that area. He’s just an impressive kid, he competes so well.”

Bradford had yielded two runs in the second inning on Castro’s solo homer and Farmer’s triple, which turned into a run when center fielder Leody Taveras mishandled the ball after it caromed hard and horizontally off the wall. Along with catcher Jonah Heim and pitching coach Mike Maddux, Bradford figured out a way to keep the Twins at bay the rest of his outing.

“We kind of made an adjustment after that second inning,” Bradford said. “Whether it was just pitch sequencing or whether I was tipping, not sure, but they seemed to be on a couple pitches that got hit hard to the wall. As a whole, we switched things up and were able to go six.”

With their bullpen taxed after heavy use in the previous series against the Red Sox, the Rangers needed depth out of Bradford, who said Maddux stressed that fact in the pitchers’ meeting before Thursday’s game.

“[Maddux said] as a whole group, as a collective of pitchers, we’ve got to have each other’s back right now,” Bradford said. “With the couple of long games in Boston, the bullpen was thin. So I knew my job was to try and get through as many outs as possible today. I was really grateful that they had the confidence that I could go out and finish that sixth inning.”
