The best vacation spots for couples are steeped in timeless romance. Whether it’s a cruise down the Nile or a saunter through sultry Buenos Aires, some places have simply mastered the art of seduction.

Still, no vacation is one size fits all, and while some couples want to escape to the golden sands of the Caribbean, other people’s idea of romance might look like a getaway to South Africa’s wine country, or seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland.

So, how to  plan a romantic getaway tailor-made for two? “My favorite piece of advice is to leave room for spontaneity,” says luxury travel advisor Amina Dearmon, the founder and owner of  Perspectives Travel . “Our lives are already so over-scheduled, it’s important to have the freedom to do absolutely nothing and enjoy each other’s company, no matter which destination you choose.”

For  domestic trips , she loves the wellness-focused resorts in Arizona like  Canyon Ranch Tucson  and the soon-to-reopen  Mii Amo . As for international destinations, she recommends the Caribbean islands of Anguilla, Dominica, and St. Lucia, as well as Venice, Italy. And if you’re going to splurge, Dearmon suggests balling out on your  accommodations (“It’s your home away from home”) and opting for extras like VIP meet and greets at the airport (“It’s a service that makes up a small percentage of your total trip cost, but it can make the biggest difference in your travel day.”).

To get a jumpstart on your planning, here are the 27 best vacation spots for couples, whether you crave a blissed-out spa getaway, a culinary vacation, or an adventure-packed itinerary.

For stretching out on the sand

Cap Juluca, a Belmond Hotel, Anguilla

For beach bliss, cookbook author and “Top Chef” judge Gail Simmons recommends a romantic getaway to  Cap Juluca, a Belmond Hotel on Anguilla. “Cap Juluca’s beach is as pristine as it gets, with its long strip of powder-white sand, crystal clear water, and views of St. Maarten in the distance,” she says. “Plus, you never have to fight for a beach chair or show up super early, since there’s plenty of room and the staff always has an umbrella set up before you’ve even arrived.” When Simmons and her husband weren’t lounging on golden sands, they went paddleboarding, hit the tennis court, enjoyed massages at the spa, and even went on a snorkeling excursion. The highlight was all the quality time the pair spent together: “I loved how private and remote Cap Juluca felt,” says Simmons. “At times it felt like we were on our very own island.”

La Co(o)orniche, Pyla-Sur-Mer

What could be more romantic than waking up to views of Europe’s biggest sand dune? At this Philippe Starck-designed  hotel in the seaside resort of Pyla-sur-Mer, couples enjoy panoramic views of Arcachon Bay and the mesmerizing Dune du Pilat from their beachy-chic guestrooms. Most visitors flock to the area to climb the magnificent dune, which rises 374 feet above sea level, but we won’t blame you for lazing on the sandy beach, breathing in the head-clearing scent of the pine forest.

Fernando De Noronha, Brazil

Brazil is spoiled for choice when it comes to beautiful beaches. But you’d be hard-pressed to find a place more blessed with natural beauty than Fernando de Noronho, a volcanic archipelago about 220 miles off the northeast coast of Brazil. Perhaps the dreamiest spot to spend the day with your significant other is Baia do Sancho, on the archipelago’s main island. The protected cove is the picture of earthly paradise, with forest-covered cliffs and azure waters home to colorful fish, dolphins, and sea turtles.

Con Dao Archipelago, Vietnam

Looking for beachside seclusion? Skip Vietnam’s over-trammeled Phu Quoc and head to the isolated Con Dao archipelago instead. The remote islands are perfect for privacy-seekers: 83 percent of the archipelago is protected by the Con Dao National Park.  The most luxurious place to lay your head is the  Six Senses Con Dao , an eco-resort backed by the Lo Voi Mountains and located on a mile-long private beach. It’s worth peeling yourself away from your seaside villa for a guided hike along the coast to Dam Tre Bay, arguably the archipelago’s most photogenic beach, with forested hills and dramatic granite cliffs.

Tofino, Canada

For couples seeking rugged natural beauty and mist-shrouded coastal landscapes, it’s hard to top Tofino on Vancouver Island. The windswept town has no shortage of beaches primed for romance: Stroll hand in hand along the 10-mile Long Beach, enjoy a picnic with views of Clayoquot Sound at Tonquin Beach, or take a couple’s surf lesson at Cox Bay Beach. And while there are plenty of  beautiful Airbnbs available to rent, the oceanfront  Wickaninnish Inn —one of Canada’s most legendary hotels—epitomizes bucket-list romance.

  Anse Source d’Argent Seychelles

There’s a reason Prince William and Kate Middleton honeymooned in the Seychelles. The Indian Ocean archipelago offers island romance par excellence, with luxurious resorts, off-the-grid adventures, and, of course, stunning beaches, the most famous being the Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue. It really doesn’t get more photogenic than this iconic stretch of sand, known for its shallow waters, imposing granite boulders, and swaying coconut palms. For a less-crowded—but no less picturesque option—hike three hours to Anse Marron, a remote beach on the southern tip of La Digue.

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon, Iceland

For spa treatments and meditative moments

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon, Iceland

This Rural Region in Spain is Paying Remote Workers $16,000 To Move There

There are few destination spas as singular as this 62-suite  hotel , built into an 800-year-old lava field on the southwest side of Iceland’s famous lagoon. It’s an otherworldly place to spend a few days, kicking back in the Scandi-chic guestrooms, soaking in the thermal hot springs, and indulging in a seven-course chef’s tasting menu at the lagoon-level restaurant. You and your partner will feel weightless as you float in the mineral-rich waters, looking out at the surreal moss-fringed landscape. If you’re lucky, the Northern Lights may even dance across the sky.

One&Only Mandarina, Mexico

Author and interior designer  Athena Calderone fell head over heels for  One&Only Mandarina , a destination resort on Riviera Nayarit’s wild Pacific Coast. “The spa was an absolute dream—the entire experience was luxurious and elegant,” she says, referencing an all-natural Tata Harper facial that left her glowing. She also loved the treehouse accommodations and the resort’s intimate dining options, like the open-air Alma restaurant helmed by French-Mexican chef Olivier Deboise. “The property is the perfect respite for couples,” she says.

Six Senses Fort Barwara, Rajasthan

Give your loved one the royal treatment at this 14 th -century fort turned 48-suite  hotel . There are daily wellness activities like sunrise yoga and traditional  puja  ceremonies at sunset. But for the ultimate indulgence, retreat to the 30,000-square-foot spa for stress-relieving shirodhara treatments and cutting-edge biohacking therapies.

Troutbeck, New York

At this sophisticated  country manor in New York’s Hudson Valley, it’s all about communing with nature while enjoying luxe amenities (deep-soaking tubs, fireplaces, and Frette linens). Robust wellness programming rounds out the itinerary, with activities like pilates classes in a high-ceilinged barn, private tennis lessons at the food of Oblong Mountain, and cycling adventures along the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. It’s the perfect weekend getaway for active couples—but the 38-room hotel is just as suited for relaxation. Stroll through the formal gardens, sign up for acupuncture treatments or massage, and if the weather’s nice, hang out by the swimming pool under the shade of sycamore trees.

Capella Ubud, Bali

This riverside  jungle camp in Bali’s lush Keliki Valley is a favorite destination among  honeymooners , but trust us, it’s far too special to only visit once in your lifetime. The setting is truly sublime, with 23 tented rooms spread over a terraced hillside flanked by paddy fields and dense rainforest. At the Auriga Spa , treatments draw on ancient Balinese and Hindu healing traditions and are accompanied by the sounds of the rainforest. This is especially true of couples who choose to bed down at the adults-only  Nayara Springs , a collection of luxurious private villas with plunge pools, gardens, outdoor showers, and show-stopping views of the Arenal Volcano. Off-property adventures include white-water rafting expeditions down the Sarapiqui River, visits to the 195-foot waterfall in the Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, and a photo tour of the lava fields.

On a nine-night safari journey with the ultra-glamorous  Rovos Rail , you and your partner will traverse some of the country’s most dramatic landscapes, including the Succulent Karoo desert, the red dunes of the Sossusvlei dry lake, and the Walvis Bay tidal lagoon. Dude ranch adventures in Utah

Studies show that couples who actively try new things together are less likely to fall into a rut. Well, we don’t know about you, but we can’t think of a better relationship-building exercise than learning the “art of cowboying” at Utah’s  Lodge at Blue Sky, Auberge Resorts Collection . Set on a 3,500-acre private working ranch a half-hour from Salt Lake City, the hotel offers a range of equine adventures suited for amateurs and experienced riders alike—instruction in English riding, rides through the flower-covered meadows of the Wasatch Mountains, and even a breathwork session in the stable.

A road trip along Australia’s Great Ocean Road

The open road offers complete spontaneity and freedom of choice—the perfect option for couples who like to leave extra room for scenic detours. For the ultimate road trip itinerary, set your sights on Australia’s Great Ocean Road, a 150-mile stretch that winds around the country’s scenic southern coast. Says Stuart Rigg, owner of  Southern Crossings Australia : “The Great Ocean Road offers captivating landscapes, charming seaside towns, fabulous food and wine experiences, and great opportunities to get outdoors with the one you love.” While he notes that the route is best known for its iconic limestone rock formations like the iconic 12 Apostles, he notes that there are plenty of other photo ops and attractions along the way. Among them: towering Californian Redwoods in Otway National Park, the Kennett River Koala Walk, and the highly-award Wickens restaurant at the Royal Mail Hotel.

A cruise down the Nile River

Egypt’s Nile River is so mythical, even Cole Porter crooned about it in his love songs. To cruise it in style, opt for a six-day itinerary with  Nour el Nil on a traditional flat-bottomed  dahabiya  sailboat. As you journey from Esna to Aswan, you and your sweetheart will float past reed-covered banks, the dunes of the Sahara, and ancient monuments like the Gebel El Silsila Temple that other large ships can’t reach.

For unforgettable meals (and wine lists)

Napa Valley, California

Wine tastings, hot-air balloon rides, pilgrimage-worthy dining, chic boutique hotels. No place does romance quite like Napa Valley. And while you could easily spend weeks discovering the region’s wineries and restaurants, there are a few spots that couples shouldn’t miss. At Sullivan Rutherford Estate, enjoy a private Cab Sauv tasting and tour of the sculpted gardens before settling in for a nine-course tasting menu at Thomas Keller’s lauded  French Laundry. Or swing by Gott’s Roadside to pick up a milkshake and old-fashioned burger before catching the sunset at Skyline Wilderness Park. The recently reborn  Poetry Inn is probably the region’s most swoon-worthy stay, with just five rooms boasting vineyard views, sweeping private terraces, and soaking tubs.

The Lake District, England

The English Lake District has long attracted outdoor enthusiasts who come to scale the U.K.’s highest peaks But in recent decades, the verdant region in northwest England has emerged as a gastronomic hotspot. It all started in 2002 when British chef Simon Rogan—one of the pioneers of the farm-to-table movement—opened his now-famous  L’Enclume in the quaint village of Cartmel. The three-starred Michelin restaurant is known for putting inventive spins on classic dishes using organic produce from Rogan’s 12-acre farm. Since then, plenty of other high-end restaurants have set up shop, like the acclaimed British-Asian  Blackbull  in Sedbergh and the  Old Stamp House in Ambleside. Now the region has become somewhat of a food pilgrimage, popular among couples craving haute cuisine and gastronomic-centered hotels like  Linthwaite House and  Our Rooms by L’Enclume .

Emilia Romagna, Italy

Every corner of Italy has something to offer from a culinary perspective. But only the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna can lay claim to 44 DOP food products including Parmigiano Reggiano, tortellini, and ragù bolognese. Begin your eatathon in the region’s capital, Bologna. With only one Michelin-starred restaurant in the entire city (yes, really), couples will have to do their own research, strolling the city’s grand porticos in search of the best osteria and trattorias. From Bologna, the options are limitless: visit family-run vinegar producers in Modena; try Culatello, the most prestigious of all cured meats, in Parma; and develop a taste for Lambrusco in Reggio Emilia. And for a no-expenses-spared date night out, there’s only one place to know about: Massimo Bottura’s renowned  Osteria Francescana in Modena.

As a melting pot of Chinese, Malay, and Indian cultures, Singapore is one of the world’s great food cities—and a real feast for travelers hungry for food  and  culture. And sure, there are temples of fine dining galore (we’re looking at you,  Odette ), but some of the city’s best bites come from unassuming local vendors at the city’s legendary hawker centers. At the Chinatown Complex Food Centre, sample everything from fragrant laksa soup and Chinese steamed buns to piping-hot clay pot rice. For date night, make reservations at the renowned  Atlas Bar , a vaulted space with Art Deco flair and the world’s largest gin collection. Even the city’s Jewel Changi Airport is a culinary wonderland with 100+ eateries, allowing couples to make the most of their every meal in the food-obsessed city.

South Africa’s Wine Country

From stunning Cape Dutch-style architecture and world-class restaurants to luxurious wine country hotels, South Africa’s wine country is truly suited to all tastes. After checking in at  Delaire Graff Estates , a boutique hotel and winery near Stellenbosch, toast to your romantic getaway with a bottle of méthode cap classique (South Africa’s version of Champagne). You’ll want to set aside a few days to go wine tasting in Stellenbosch and the neighboring regions Franschhoek, Paarl, and Constantia, where the grape to seek out is Pinotage, South Africa’s flagship variety. For a vacation memory that’ll age like fine wine, splurge on the tasting menu at  Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia .

Aman Kyoto Japan Hotel

For art and culture around every corner

It’s no secret that the French capital is a cultural powerhouse. But it’s not always easy to escape the crowds and enjoy the cultural treasures for yourself—or is it? According to the uber-stylish Parisian hoteliers Anouk and Louis Solanet of  Orso hotel group, there are plenty of lesser-known gems even in popular neighborhoods like Montmartre (you just need to know where to look). One of the couple’s favorite spots is the Musée de la vie Romantique , a literary museum situated at the base of Montmartre and set within the former house of Dutch painter Ary Scheffer. “We love to sit in silence in the hidden garden, which smells of roses and lilacs,” says Anouk. Afterwards, they recommend grabbing a drink at  Hotel Rochechouart ’s rooftop, which offers dead-on views of the Sacré Coeur. On the Left Bank, the couple loves strolling through the Jardin du Luxembourg and on to Rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs, one of the streets that inspired Woody Allen’s  Midnight in Paris,  and finally to the Giacometti Foundation—“A jewel of Parisian museum,” says Louis—which is dedicated to the life and work of the famous Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti.

Lausanne, Switzerland

Switzerland’s fourth-largest city is straight out of a fairytale, with a medieval Old Town and vertiginous streets that rise above the shimmering waters of Lake Geneva. It’s also one of the country’s most underrated arts hubs, thanks to the recent opening of  Platforme 10 , a striking new art district home to three of the city’s major art museums. For couples who prefer to see art en plein air, go on a cultural scavenger hunt to locate 82 works scattered throughout the hillside city (don’t miss Clelia Bettua’s sculptural weather vane at the Port of Ouchy). To cap off a perfect day, catch a show at the newly modernized Théâre de Vidy before retiring at the  Hôtel Royal Savoy Lausanne , a grand castle-like property that wouldn’t be out of place in a Wes Anderson flick. The hotel has a sublime spa, a rooftop terrace overlooking the lake, and an unbeatable location near all the top cultural spots.

Buenos Aires

Is there a city sexier than Buenos Aires? There’s something sultry about Argentina’s capital, from its dimly-lit tango bars and balmy weather to its heady mix of South American and European influences. After catching a tango performance at the city’s best-known milonga, La Catedral , continue your cultural immersion at the Teatro Colon —one of the world’s most beautiful opera houses—where Igor Stravinsky has performed, Rudolph Nureyev has danced, and Maria Callas has sung. From there, it’s a short walk to  El Ateneo Grand Splendid , a bookstore occupying a former theater and featuring century-old ceiling frescos. But to really feel the spirit of the city, couples should spend an afternoon in the colorful La Boca neighborhood, where there are vibrant murals, live music, and views of the Riachuelo River.

Venice, Italy

“Venice is pure magic,” says Amina Dearmon of Perspectives Travel. “I love being able to wander the streets, stop at an osteria for an Aperol Spritz, and watch the sunset from the Accademia Bridge.” Like so many Italian cities, Venice is like an open-air museum, brimming with art and culture at every turn. Its narrow streets and atmospheric squares are packed with heavy-hitting institutions, too, like the  Peggy Guggenheim Collection , the  Doge’s Palace , and the  Palazzo Ca’ Pesaro . First-time visitors shouldn’t miss a side trip to Murano, the second-largest island in the Venetian lagoon, to learn about its long tradition of glassmaking at the  Venice Glass Museum .

The former imperial capital of Japan is home to more than a dozen UNESCO World Heritage Sites and some 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. In any other city, the sheer volume of culture would be head-spinning. But in Kyoto, it’s a pleasure to stroll around the peaceful temple gardens, traditional teahouses, and ancient storefronts, feeling transported to an earlier time. Top landmarks include the famous orange torii gates at the Fushimi Inari shrine, the celebrated Kiyomizu Temple, and the impressive Nijo Castle. If the budget allows, spend the night at the new  Aman Kyoto , a sanctuary-like retreat set on 80 acres of hilly woodland in the north of the city, a stone’s throw from the golden Kinkaku-ji Temple.

Is any romantic roundup complete without singing the praises of the City of Lights? As the capital of France, there's a reason so many couples seek the ambience and energy of this Parisian destination. When you wander about this European city, you'll find yourselves mesmerized by idyllic coffee shops, picture-perfect cobblestone streets, and the scent of freshly-baked-everything perfuming the air. Aerial view of the Bora Bora

Romance and Bora Bora match as perfectly as the turquoise and azure water of the lagoon surrounding this magical island in the South Pacific. One of the most coveted honeymoon destinations in the world, Bora Bora's beauty is unmatched.

Beyond the calm, clear lagoon with colors defy description, Bora Bora is home to brilliant white sand beaches ringing an interior featuring towering volcanic peaks and lush foliage. Activities include romantic dining, couples massage, and snorkeling around the lagoon reefs. There is also excellent diving opportunities.

The resorts here were designed with romance in mind, and you'll want to book an overwater bungalow to sleep in a stilted villa over the ocean. You'll find resorts on the mainland and on private motus (islets) in the lagoon.

To reach Bora Bora, it's an 8-hour flight from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Tahiti, where the international airport is located, and then a quick one-hour flight onwards to paradise.

Gondola ride on a canal in Venice

There's a saying that you either love or hate Venice when you visit this romantic northern Italy city. But our guess is if you go when you're feeling butterflies, The City of Water will have them swarming.

Even for the well-versed traveler, Venice presents an entirely new experience, since it is the capital of the Veneto region, comprised of 100 tiny islands. Here, there are very few roads, but many canals, making a gondola ride with your main squeeze a must.

As you stroll hand-in-hand across romantic bridges (don't miss the Rialto Bridge , a marvel of engineering), soaking up the undeniably hospitable Italian culture, you'll witness nods to the Renaissance era, as well as Gothic landmarks.

Nibble your way through St. Mark's Square , where local vendors display their handmade goods. Hold tight to your food, though, as hundreds of pigeons swarm this area in search of tasty treats.

For an Instagram-worthy photo op, scale to the top of the Campanile Bell Tower , offering quite the view. If you're traveling for a milestone, take a boat to the glass-blowing region on Murano Island and take home a keepsake.

Romantic beach dining in The Maldives

While images of this one-of-a-kind tropical nation might not come up if you Google "romance," it is definitely what comes to mind when you dream of the picture-perfect honeymoon spot. This luxurious destination in the Indian Ocean has a unique landscape, with 26 circular micro islands woven together. No wonder it's been rated one of the most beautiful islands in the world .

Most couples will splurge on the infamous overwater bungalows with an expansive balcony and transparent floors that allow the sea to illuminate your room.

In addition to some of the most impressive — and beautiful — beaches in the world, snorkeling duos will enjoy exploring reefs and sea life of every shape and size.

For couples who enjoy experiencing local culture as part of their adventure, consider spending a day in the capital of Male , where you can watch a local fish market at work and shop for artisan goods on the main street of Majeedhee Magu.

Looking to get hitched during winter? The Maldives are one of the best honeymoon destinations in January .

Santorini

As one of the most popular honeymoon destinations on the planet, and one of the most beautiful Greek Islands , Santorini might require a long plane ride and a puddle jumper flight, but trust us, it is worth the journey. Blue-domed houses so white, they sparkle are a treat to behold, while the twinkling azure Aegean Sea beckons travelers in the distance.

This picturesque sea is the main reason many newlyweds choose Santorini. In addition to its ability to cool off even the most overheated of travelers, this watery haven offers captivatingly pink, orange, and golden sunsets best viewed from the town of Oia . It's still utterly romantic, but you won't be the only ones enjoying Mother Nature's fantastic nightly display — Oia gets packed at sunset, no matter the season.

Many of Santorini's boutiques, restaurants, and resorts are built into the jagged cliff sides, giving couples the chance to book a unique private escape for their trip. While walking through town, don't be surprised if you end up on someone's roof.

In addition to walking through narrow — and often steep — streets to catch a glimpse of the iconic white skyline, it's also recommended to rent a car for your trip. Though you can hire a taxi service, many duos prefer the independence of scaling the island on their own, giving them the ability to stop for a photo — or a romp — when the mood strikes.

If you're feeling more adventurous, rent a scooter. There's little more romantic than holding on to your partner as you wind your way along the scenic roadways.

Thai long-tail boat on the beach

Thanks to an unbelievable shade of blue water, the low cost of aromatic and flavorful food, and dreamy beaches , many jet-setters make a point to visit the romantic beach resorts of Thailand.

There are dozens gorgeous places to choose from in Krabi province. Head out to the best islands in Krabi and disconnect on a quiet trip or visit the bustling streets and beaches of Phuket .

Located in the southern area of the west coast of the country, you'll find mangroves, limestone formations, boulders, and many other works of wonder from Mother Nature herself.

You can book a long-tail boat to take you to Railay Beach or go on a snorkeling tour to see colorful creatures of the sea. For a bit of a splurge, you can stay at five-star resorts, most of which come complete with beach access and a private pool for lounging.

Couples on a game drive in Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Finally finding someone you could imagine sharing your life with feels like sourcing a diamond in the rough, a four-leaf clover—or well, seeing a leopard in a tree.

Going on a safari in South Africa is one of those bucket list items that everyone dreams of, and there's no better person to share the immense wonder of the African bush with than your partner.

Though you can drive yourself through the legendary Kruger National Park , a more romantic option is staying at a game lodge in the exemplary Sabi Sands Game Reserve, where many luxury resorts offer couple experiences you never imagined possible.

You can wake up with a view of giraffes and zebras at a watering hole and end your day with an evening drive spotting the Big 5. Before you head back to your bungalow, you can cuddle in awe of the cascade of stars and constellations that shine above you and marvel at the universe that brought you together.

Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos

Boasting some of the most beautiful hued water in the Caribbean and one of the world's most gorgeous beaches , Turks and Caicos is a dreamy, romantic destination for couples seeking a tropical getaway that's easily accessible from North America. It's also a perfect choice if you want to see a part of the Caribbean still void of mega all-inclusive resorts.

The vibe here is all about the natural beauty and tranquility. From calm, clear water to the clarity of the sand and colorful sunsets, this is an island getaway that encourages long romantic walks on the beach followed by leisurely dinners at excellent restaurants. There is also fabulous snorkeling, diving, and bone fishing in the glassy sea.

Providenciales is the main island that tourists visit . It is one of eight inhabited islands in the Turks and Caicos string of 40 islands. Here you'll find stunning Grace Bay Beach, which is consistently ranked one of the world's best. Running for 12-miles, it has great snorkeling just offshore in a thriving reef.

You'll also find many of the most romantic resorts here. Unlike the Dominican Republic, Jamaica or The Bahamas, Turks and Caicos doesn't cater to mass market resorts. Instead, you'll find truly luxe accommodation in smaller properties that have more intimate vibes, which is another perk if you just want to spend time with your partner.

A romantic stroll on a beautiful beach in the Seychelles

It's impossible to fall out of love while vacationing in the Seychelles. One of the most romantic destinations on the planet, this 115-island archipelago sits serenely in the Indian Ocean, about 1,800 kilometers off Africa's east coast.

The region's magnificent scenery caresses its visitors, intriguing them to snorkel in the crystal-clear water, trek through the jungle, and climb over dramatic volcanic boulders.

Silhouette Island, Seychelles

Mahé is the largest Seychellois island, offering a slew of hotel, restaurant, and shopping choices at all price points, but it's the small, private isles that really bring on the romance.

In addition to pristine beaches and water so warm and clean, you could swim and snorkel in it all day, many of these lavish islands are home to their own upscale resorts.

The Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa , for instance, occupies a large chunk of the tranquil Silhouette Island, meaning guests have private access to everything from volcanic beaches to rainforest pathways, and jungle treks. The only other inhabitants on this isle live in a tiny, historic fishing village located near the main dock.

Walking on Kaanapali Beach, Maui

If you're American, there's no passport required for this romantic hub, but you might feel as if you went to another country when you catch a glimpse of the truly remarkable beauty of Hawaii.

While there are dozens of islands to navigate — from Oahu to Kauai — if you want to wear those head-over-heels rose-colored glasses, set your sights on Maui. In addition to some dreamy luxury resorts, the varied landscape of this Hawaiian island sets it apart from its neighbors. The beaches are so glorious, you won't want to leave.

Couples can drive along the picturesque Hana Highway and explore the Haleakala National Park , including the volcano it's named after. And since most amorous vacations require a beach day, there are 30 miles of sand to set up shop on.

Make sure you save time to fall asleep under the dazzling stars and constellations that bring light to the midnight sky.

A cheetah in Masai Mara

If your idea of a romantic getaway involves watching cheetahs stalk prey across the savannah, snapping photos of baby lions playing (they look like puppies, FYI), or witnessing an elephant family drinking from a watering hole as the sun sinks low on the horizon and turns the sky into an explosion of colors, then you need to book a trip to Kenya's Masai Mara.

The country's premier safari destination is uber romantic. Home to all of Africa's most famous animals, it is also where the Great Migration takes place each year starting in July or August . There are numerous safari lodges for all budgets of travelers. But for a special trip, you'll want to stay at Cottar's 1920s Safari Camp.

The place looks like you stepped back in time to the 1920s. Everything from the birdcage chandeliers and gramophones in the main tent where dinner is served to the al fresco bubble baths set up outside your luxurious canvas sleeping abodes upon request a replica of what safari camps looked like a century ago – minus the fact that you no longer hunt the animals, but instead photograph them. It is about as yesteryear romantic as you can get.

Positano on the Amalfi Coast

Imagine this, if you will: canoodling with your number one and snapping a sunset selfie as you overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea from your cliffside villa in Italy. If that sounds just about perfect, the Amalfi Coast is an ideal spot for your next holiday-for-two.

While this area of the Campania region is only 50 kilometers long, it lures many tourists thanks to its captivating beauty, fresh seafood, and photo-worthy panoramic views.

You and your partner can navigate narrow roads and alleys; stop by fishing villages; tour clifftop villas; or spend the day on the gorgeous beach , soaking up the vitamin D, and the warmth of the Italians.

Capri

Multiple stunning villages, or "pearls of the Amalfi," as they are sometimes called, are scattered along the rugged Amalfi Coast. Positano is arguably the most beautiful, while Amalfi is considered the main heart of this breathtaking region. From here, grab a ferry to Capri to up your romance factor even higher.

Other must-sees include Ravello , Atrani , Maiori , and Vietri sul Mare .

Wildflowers along the road in Big Sur

With wild ocean views from craggy cliffs, fine dining, small luxury resorts, and excellent hiking, California's Big Sur is one of the state's most romantic destinations. It's the perfect spot for a destination wedding, an elopement, honeymoon, or just a weekend getaway with the person you love.

Located about three hours south of San Francisco and five hours north of Los Angeles along one of California's most rugged and beautiful stretches of coastline, Big Sur is also a perfect romantic destination for couples seeking some digital detox time. Cell phone reception is spotty here and some of the hotels don't have TVs in the rooms.

But that is okay, because this is a destination you visit to commune with nature and your loved one. Take a walk through the woods or along the beach and just soak up the magic of this special place. When it comes to lodging, one of the most romantic options is the Post Ranch Inn .

The luxury property isn't cheap, but for a special occasion, worth the price. The service is impeccable as is the cliffside location. Take a dip in one of the two infinity pools as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean. They are heated to Jacuzzi-like temperatures.

View of Quebec City

Ahh, Québec City, how we love you. Canada's city de l'amour, this French-speaking ville is about as romantic as you can get outside of Europe. It's overlooked by the iconic Fairmont Le Château Frontenac , which stands stoically atop a steep cliff in Upper Town , surrounded by stone walls. You'll be forgiven for thinking you're in France.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this charming spot is one of Canada's best cities , and one of its most romantic, for good reason. Lower Town (a.k.a. Basse-Ville) is chock-full of dreamy narrow streets, eclectic shops, quaint restaurants, and a lane named Rue du Cul de Sac that's covered by blue and white umbrellas.

Québec City's setting on the banks of the St. Lawrence River only helps increase the quixotic feel. Palace Royale is the central tourist area, which perfectly blends the town's history and contemporary features. This is where you'll find outdoor patios on which to enjoy a meal al fresco while surrounded by enchanting buildings that date to the 17 th and 18 th centuries.

The Neptune Fountain at Cerro Santa Lucía in Santiago

Part of the beauty of this South American destination is found in its location: a large metropolis, encompassed by the breathtaking view of the Andes Mountains and the nearby Chilean coast. .

Though you can probably tour most of Santiago itself in two days — from the Plaza de Armas to the Metropolitan Cathedral — the appeal for many romance-seeking duos is in renting a car and hitting the road. You can drive toward the sea, get lost in the countryside, or depending on the season, even go skiing.

For those who don't mind a bit of country hopping, Santiago is a popular place to start from and drive through the Andes mountains to Mendoza, Argentina , where you'll definitely need to stop a few times to admire the view.

Laurel Lake in The Berkshires

Many couples look forward to their first weekend away, where they can test their skills of navigating life together — even if it is just agreeing on directions or a place to eat. For a long weekend adventure that's accessible to the East Coast, The Berkshires is an ideal romantic destination, and one of the best weekend getaways in Massachusetts .

While all seasons offer a variety of perks, most partners choose Autumn or early winter for their escape. During this time of year in the mountains of Western Massachusetts, leaves are hosting their annual color show, dazzling with hues of vibrant red, warm oranges, and unbelievable yellows.

You can rent a car and admire nature, stay at a bed-and-breakfast that provides homemade waffles (and ahem, maple syrup!) for breakfast, and end your nights canoodling by the fire.

If you happen to visit during summer, you can also enjoy freshly prepared farm (or sea)-to-table dishes or go for a swim or canoe on the many lakes that speckle the area.

The most romantic places in the world

Paris France

Romance can be many things to many people, but few can resist the allure of a romantic escape for two. While there's no wrong answer when it comes to romance, some of the world's most beautiful spots lend themselves to catering to couples, especially when it comes to hotels. So whether you're planning a honeymoon , an anniversary or a weekend getaway just because, these are our top picks for the most romantic places in the world, plus where to stay in each.

Le Sirenuse Positano

1. Amalfi Coast, Italy

From the naturally blessed shores of  Lake Como  right down to Sicily's heart-melting capital  Palermo , you could throw a dart anywhere on a map of Italy and land on one of the most romantic places in the world. It's spurred on much debate within the team but if we  had  to choose just one fuzzy-eyed spot in Italy, it's the Amalfi Coast. We're not alone in our admiration either. The Greeks, so taken by the area’s natural beauty, attributed it to a nymph who captivated the heart of Hercules. The  towns of Amalfi Coast  only add to the charm, with brightly hued houses dotted along the rocking hillside, each offering a unique outlook along with shops, restaurants and swimming spots that are up for discovery.

Where to stay: Pretty much all of the  best Amalfi Coast hotels  fit the bill for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. In terms of location, Borgo Santandrea in Amalfi is a winner, perched high in the cliffs and built into the rock face overlooking the sea. All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and sea views. Palazzo Avino in Ravello has equally knock-out views, especially from the top-floor Infinito Suite with its large living room and a bathroom with a hot-tub-style bath. For a stay that pulls out all of the stops, it doesn't get much better than  Le Sirenuse , a Pompeii-style red and white building in the centre of Positano. The restaurant here, La Sponda, with its 400 candles and bougainvillaea-clad dining room, is quite possibly the most romantic in the region.

Gili Lankanfushi Maldives

2. The Maldives

For going off-grid

Confetti bursts of colourful tropical fish in gin-clear lagoons, freshly prepared breakfast spreads delivered to your private pool via floating trays, sipping a morning coffee while a manta ray soars underneath your feet – it's the stuff of honeymoon dreams and the much lauded reality of a trip to the Maldives. While there are plenty of family-friendly hotels in the Maldives , few places can compare to the archipelago country's innate sense for romance and adults-only stays. Boutique stays and lo-fi boltholes area rarity here, instead the best hotels in the Maldives are world class, spread out on their own private islands, nestling state-of-the-art spas and multiple restaurants amongst lush jungles, pristine beaches and house reefs.

Where to stay: Romance comes naturally to pretty much all of the hotels in this region. Some standout spots include Vakkaru , a lush coconut tree-covered island resort with a jungle cinema that guests can reserve for a private dinner and movie under the stars. For the latest shiny stay, Six Senses recently set up its second hotel in the Maldives, offering up a tip-top spa with an impressive couples' suite. In terms of aesthetics, it's hard to beat Gili Lankanfushi Maldives , where all villas are stilted over one of the most eye-wateringly beautiful lagoons in the country, keeping the island wild and the beaches on full dazzling display.

Executive suite with cave plunge pool at Andronis Boutique Hotel Santorini

3. Santorini, Greece

Santorini is the knockout Greek island – the island with the best views, the best sunsets, and the best hotels. Combine all of these elements and it's a recipe for one of the most romantic spots in the world. Days are best spent out on the water, sailing to nearby islands and hopping between the best beaches in Santorini . But then again you could easily stay at one of the best hotels in Santorini – where private infinity pools boast the best seats in the house – and never want to leave.

Where to stay: For one of the best views on the island, check in to cliffside Nobu Hotel , where the 25 luxe rooms and suites come with uninterrupted views of the Aegean. Similarly Andronis Boutique Hotel offers up a series of traditional cave-style suites and villas with private infinity pools, cave pools and hot tubs, set right in the heart of Oía. For a private stay, this traditional cave house in Oia is one of top trending homes on Airbnb . The view is postcard worthy, made all the more romantic when admired from the semi-cave whirlpool and multi-level private terrace.

Montmartre in Paris France

4. Paris, France

For a weekend break

When it comes to a romantic city break it's hard not to have all eyes on Paris . The clichés can't help but ring true when exploring the city, from serene strolls along the Seine to a glass of wine with a view at one of the best rooftop bars in Paris . And then there are the hotels in Paris , amongst some of the best in the world, sublime in their views , old-world charm and effortlessly chic interiors.

Where to stay: Newcomer Le Grand Mazarin , in the enduringly romantic Le Marais, is one of the prettiest places to stay – all velvet pouffes, clashing prints and tapestry canopies over the beds. Nearby, Maison Proust has only 23 Belle Époque-style suites and a swoon-worthy Moroccan-style heated pool. To make a grand romantic gesture, reserve a room at St James Hotel in 16th arrondissement, Paris’s only officially designated château-hotel. This 11th arrondissement Airbnb also makes for a romantic stay, complete with fluffy bathrobes, sleek decor and a leafy private terrace.

For a winter sun escape WithnbspMoroccos yearround bonewarming weather just a threehour flight fromnbspLondon Marrakech...

5. Marrakech, Morocco

For a winter sun escape

With  Morocco ’s year-round, bone-warming weather just a three-hour flight from  London , Marrakech makes for a sunny romantic escape when all is gloomy at home. And while the buzz of the Old City's winding souks and the sight of cobras dancing out of baskets make for a fun adventure, there are other sides to  Marrakech  away from the noise of Jemaa el-Fna square and the tourists at the Jardin Majorelle. For a slower and more private pace, swap the medina for the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, followed by a drink at Grand Café de la Poste, one of the most beautiful restaurants in the city.

Where to stay: When it comes to places to stay, the list of best hotels in Marrakech has grown rampantly in recent years, but our favourite – and by far the most romantic – is still La Mamounia . Set in 20 acres of gardens just inside the walls of the Old City, the hotel has retained the feel of a palace but added a contemporary theatricality to its accommodation (which now includes three three-bedroom riads with their own pools), plus four restaurants, five bars and a Salon de Thé. For a pretty riad stay , reserve a traditional room at Riad Sadaka and don't forget your swimming costume – the courtyard pool is simply stunning.

6. Bali, Indonesia

The spiritual getaway

Bali is beloved as the land of a million islands, misty, mythical mountainous stacks, and chilled-out beach clubs . It's also the land of some of the most beautiful places to stay in the world. No matter how many five-star hotels open up though, Bali is no homogenized island resort. It's a magical, spiritual place, which manages to retain its authenticity and culture, as well as its unspoilt beaches and green tropical landscapes. All essential ingredients for a romantic stay.

Where to stay: The list of fabulous Bali hotels is always expanding, but for something more down to earth, look to Sandat Glamping tents , set among bright-green rice fields close to Ubud. Cuddling under canvas is less lumpy groundsheets and roof leaks, more canopy beds and private decks. Newcomer Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape , is a “no walls, no doors” resort with just 16 villas as well as a two-story central pavilion from which a dreamy, lounger-lined infinity pool protrudes into the valley.

7. Tulum, Mexico

For bohemian chic

The golden beaches of Mexico have long been a draw for couples, but one such spot is increasingly becoming the go-to for well-heeled couples seeking bohemian barefoot luxury. Just south of Cancun on the Yucatán Peninsula lies Tulum , the promised land of designer yoga, spiritual jungle journeys and ancient-temple-fringed sands. Plus some of the best hotels in Mexico .

Where to stay: Casa Malca is a former hacienda of Pablo Escobar’s, and now a boutique hotel highly curated by socialite art dealer Lio Malca. Down a dirt path and away from the scrums of man-buns and juiced-up goddesses, here beach suites face a quiet stretch of powder-white sand; all windows point to the Caribbean . The hotel itself is like one giant immersive art exhibition; the entrance has a huge door carved out of tree trunks, framed by curtains stitched from vintage wedding gowns, between which dangle two swings made of antique furniture. As Lio says, it’s about ‘connecting with yourself and the wild’ as well as ‘luxury and art’.

For the outdoorsy Naturelovers cant help but fall for Big Sur a wild and storied stretch of Californias central coast....

8. Big Sur, California

For the outdoorsy

Nature-lovers can’t help but fall for Big Sur , a wild and storied stretch of California’s central coast. Its bewitching blend of towering redwood forest, muscular green mountains and crashing ocean views has drawn everyone from bohemian writers (Henry Miller) to Hollywood heavyweights (Steve McQueen), seeking isolation in its eucalyptus-scented heart. Is there anything more seductive than hiking hand-in-hand to remote, wooded waterfalls or discovering your own dramatic, deserted beach ?

Where to stay: Look to Alila Ventana , which sprawls across a Big Sur mountain meadow and where suites have a rustic-luxe, cabin-esque vibe. When you’ve finished gazing over the Pacific from your balcony hammock (roomy enough for two), try a couple’s treatment in a forest-facing spa cabana, plunge into the open-air Japanese baths, or take a dip in the clothing-optional communal pool.

9. Seychelles

For island indulgence

The world ‘oohs’ and 'aahs' about the Maldives but smart travellers know the Seychelles warrants just as much fanfare. Thanks to the islands' remoteness – 1,600km off the east coast of Africa – they have never been cheap to visit, or, for that matter, on any cruise-ship itineraries. And there in lies the appeal.

Where to stay: Only the best of the best can set up a hotel in the Seychelles . One such address is the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles , a remote hillside retreat overlooking the bay of Petite Anse on the south-west coast of Mahé. The 67 stilted villas and suites feel like tree houses, peeping out from the jungle canopy of coconut, mango, jackfruit and cinnamon trees. All the obligatory features of the luxury 'Robinson Crusoe' experience are in place – infinity-edged plunge pools, open-air showers, glass-walled bathrooms and expansive outdoor living areas – but taken to another level. At Six Senses Zil Pasyon , the villas are also more akin to super-smart, minimalist tree-houses, secluded amid rocks and pristine forest.

10. New York

It may be a busy city, full of comings and goings and beeping traffic jams, but  New York  is no stranger to magical moments of romance. It usually hits the city when the first autumn leaves start to fall, blanketing the city in shades of auburn and ruby, crescendoing up until Christmas when leaves are swapped for twinkling lights. During this time one of the most romantic things to do in New York is to just take a walk, around Central Park, through Greenwich Village, along The High Line.

Where to stay: To lean into the romance of it all, play up to the old New York charms with a stay on the Upper East Side. There's  The Lowell  (pictured) on ritzy East 63rd Street, where bedrooms are the last word in elegance, with polished mahogany floors, Persian rugs and good, hand-made furniture. For pure relaxation amongst the chaos, check into the Aman in midtown, where the sprawling, three-floor spa and wellness centre has a 65-foot pool, plus not one but two spa houses – one centred around an Eastern European banya, the other a Moroccan hammam.

11. Ibiza, Spain

For island chic

As insiders will tell you, there's a lot more to Ibiza than meets the eye. Go off the beaten track even a fraction and you will discover a world of sleepy hill villages, wild forests, rambling orchards and crumbling farm houses. Time your visit to spring and a further surprise awaits: almond trees in full bloom, covering great swathes of the interior, with entire valleys exploding into glorious white and pink blossom. All this is complemented by an appealing combination of warm days and chilly nights.

Where to stay: Front-row seats for this extraordinary natural show are available at Cas Gasi , a 12-room property that spills down a hillside smothered in almond, fig and carob trees. Since opening in 1998, Cas Gasi has become known as one of the best hotels in Ibiza , particularly with high-profile guests who love its secluded location and low-key luxury. OKU Ibiza also has a privileged location that gives you access to the most beautiful beach spots on the island, along with wabi sabi–inspired design, two serene swimming pools, regular yoga sessions and fusion cuisine.

For romance by rail

There is something irresistibly romantic about luxury train travel . Add India to the mix and you've got an experience guaranteed to dazzle. In the heyday of the maharajas it was not unusual for royalty to travel with their furniture – four-poster beds, thrones, you name it. This is certainly the look the new Maharajas' Express is going for. One of the only luxury trains offering itineraries that cross India's state borders, 'Royal India' is a seven-day epic journey from Delhi to Mumbai , taking in Agra, Ranthambore, Jaipur, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Udaipur ( pictured above ) and Vadodara along the way.

Among the highlights is a decadent Champagne lunch on a hillock overlooking the Taj Mahal, a tiger-spotting jeep safari in Ranthambore National Park and elephant polo matches in Jaipur culminating in a Champagne dinner. Life on board is all about comfort. All the cabins and suites are wonderfully regal with huge windows, comfortable beds, LCD TV's and DVD players; but if your feeling particularly flush, book the two-bedroom Presidential Suite, which occupies an entire carriage and has a living room big enough for several comfortable sofas and a dining table. (The junior suite is also surprisingly roomy and much more reasonably priced.) Other treats include an observation carriage with its own bar, games table and club armchairs, and two fine-dining restaurants.

13. Antigua, Caribbean

The spa retreat

Accessed only by boat, the secluded, car-free private-island hideaway of Jumby Bay ( pictured above ), two miles off the coast of Antigua , offers the quintessential Caribbean experience. The standout for romance is the spa , set close to the beach and open to the elements, with five treatment rooms that open onto private terraces. The signature treatments use ingredients taken straight from the garden; one of the highlights is a treatment that involves lying in a soft, handmade hammock while a therapist focuses on pressure points in your head, back, hands and feet to release tension. You can then amble over to your thatched bohio (hut) on the beach, or to one of the many hammocks strung up between the palm trees. The resort is good for creative little extras: to help you enjoy the astonishing night sky, staff will pack a Champagne picnic dinner and send you off to star-gaze on Pasture Beach; there are also cookery classes for men, led by head chef Paolo Lovari, so while their partners indulge in spa treatments (not to generalise), they can learn how to make everything from ceviche to Caribbean lobster bisque.

Venice Italy

14. Venice, Italy

For a hit to all the senses

In any line-up of the world’s most romantic cities, Venice has long been blazing a trail. This jewel-box city has an extraordinary ability to seduce every one of its visitors – whether it’s via the haunting cry of a gondolier bouncing off the city’s ancient stone walls; the awe and wonder of sighting a Caravaggio in a backstreet church, or the first sip of a perfectly sweet Bellini in a tiny cicchetti bar stumbled upon by chance. Skip the summer, when oppressive crowds steal much of Venice ’s romance and come in winter instead – the city becomes intoxicatingly quiet, and you’ll get most of the big-ticket sites all to yourself. To dial up the romance, whoosh in on the Venice-Simplon Orient Express : it’s hands-down the most lavish train journey in the world, and guaranteed to whisk you straight back to the golden age of travel.

Where to stay: If you’ve got deep pockets, you can’t beat a stay at  Aman Venice  – the gilded ballrooms, Murano chandeliers and priceless frescoes were good enough for the Clooney’s wedding night. But if you want to flee the paparazzi, float across the lagoon to  Belmond Hotel Cipriani , a little pocket of peace with romantic rose and hydrangea-filled gardens and an enormous pool with views across to St Mark’s Square. Slightly further afield but no less magical,  Casa Burano offers a more laidback, affordable stay, squirrelled away in a string of candy-coloured fishermen’s houses on film-set pretty Burano. The island can get busy at times, but once the day-trippers vanish, there’s no better place to catch one of Venice’s famous fuchsia-pink sunsets.

Buenos Aires Argentina

15. Buenos Aires, Argentina

For flinging on your dancing shoes

Buenos Aires is often touted as South America’s answer to Paris. Yet there’s far more to the sultry Argentinean capital than it’s intoxicating collision of European and Latin American cultures. This enduringly sexy city is an endless love affair of tango, sizzling asado and big, full-bodied wines – and most definitely a place to get dressed up and stay out late. A crop of exciting young chefs is revolutionising the city’s thrillingly unpretentious food scene, and buzzy rooftop cocktail bars are slowly taking over the city. And of course, there’s no better way to get under Buenos Aires’ skin than by learning the art of the world’s most passionate dance – even better if it’s done at a traditional, dimly-lit  milonga .

Where to stay: Palacio Duhau dominates Buenos Aires’ hotel scene – inside, it’s a feast of glittering chandeliers and marble floors, while the candlelit terrace at restaurant Los Salones del Piano Nobile is an unbeatable date night spot. For a more authentic experience in the heart of trendy foodie neighbourhood Palermo,  Home is a hipsters’ hangout with a tiny pool flanked by blousy jacaranda trees and the smell of jasmine lingering in the air. The delightful staff are the hotel’s biggest asset – miraculously appearing exactly when you need them, but utterly tuned in to knowing when you just want to be left alone with your significant other.

Iceland

16. Iceland

For adventurous spirit

It's hard not to fall for Iceland’s awe-inspiring primal landscapes. The country delivers a hit of romance and adventure in equal measure, and in winter – when short days shout out for cosy nights snuggled by the fire, and there’s a decent chance of spotting the elusive Northern Lights dance across the eerily dark skies – there’s no better time to visit this Nordic superstar. To take it all in, hire a car and hit the 828-mile Ring Road route – wending its way along the country’s entire coastal region, it’s one of the world’s most romantic road trips, swishing past the glaciers, geysers and black sand beaches Iceland is so famous for.

Where to stay: There are plenty of cute cabins to book into along the way: we particularly like the look of  this one , touching distance from Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking waterfalls. To really hole up and hide away, book into  Deplar Farm : deep in the ravishingly remote, bleak but beautiful Tröllaskagi Peninsula, this is one of Europe’s most isolated lodges – and a stay here truly is a once-in-a-lifetime treat. In Reykjavik, the Edition has warm and inviting rooms, with Italian furnishings made from ash wood and floor-to-ceiling windows that either frame the fjord and Mt. Esja or views of downtown.

17. Hamilton Island, Australia

For adventurous couples

Forget for a moment that the Whitsundays’ largest inhabited island is positioned right beside Heart Reef (exactly as it sounds: a perfectly heart-shaped coral reef). Because Hamilton Island isn’t for your typical doe-eyed duo – more for those possessing an affinity with the Australian fixation for flinging yourself into adrenalin-pumping stuff. The immaculate waters of the Great Barrier Reef offer world-class dive sites to discover together, while the island’s off-road trails provide a white-knuckle rush deep into the bush.

Where to stay: After a thrilling helicopter ride over this insanely Eden-esque landscape, daredevils can decompress at Qualia , a smart property on its own peninsula. It has 60 secluded one-bedroom, glass-walled pavilions, with private sundecks for gazing over the water – some with their own infinity-edged pool.

18. French Polynesia

The off-grid escape

Want to run away together? No one will find you at The Brando , an all-villa, super-exclusive hideaway on a private South Pacific island (30 miles north of Tahiti, but accessible only by six-seater plane). Marlon Brando bought Tetiaroa atoll in 1967 and, decades later, set about creating this sustainable, utopian spot, where nature alone provides both decoration and diversion. Smart, thatched dwellings tucked among coconut palms each have their own strip of sand, infinity pool and outdoor tub. The pristine lagoon and blindingly white beach are yours – all yours! – to explore. A hefty all-inclusive rate encompasses daily spa treatments, Champagne, food, excursions and more. (Be sure to make eyes at each other over French chef Guy Martin’s Michelin-grade feasts.) With only 35 villas on the entire island, intimacy comes guaranteed.

Provence France

19. Provence, France

For old-school romance

We’ve got the likes of Cezanne, Renoir and Van Gogh to thank for parcelling up the pure timeless romance of Provence. A post-impressionist haze of higgledy-piggledy medieval hamlets, rolling olive groves and sunflowers lined up in serried ranks, Provence is the perfect setting for giddy sun-baked afternoons sipping rosé under the shade of a cypress tree, pedalling through lavender fields or hopping between vineyards.

Where to stay: There’s no shortage of romantic hotels to live out your Provençal fantasy in.  Crillon Le Brave’s  ramble of wisteria-tangled honey-stone buildings dominates an entire hilltop village; the best suites resemble private pieds-à-terre, with side-by-side rolltop baths and all-consuming views over the muted pastoral landscape. A little further south,  Chateau Saint Martin  is an ideal base for art lovers keen to explore gallery-laced St-Paul-de-Vence, brimming with pétanque-playing locals and home to the legendary family-run restaurant La Colombe d’Or. Back at the hotel, there’s a knockout spa (treatments can be taken in the rose garden on sunny days), and a Michelin-starred restaurant with neatly framed views of the glittering Cote d’Azur. Up here in the hills, you’re in proper fairy-tale Provence – and it’s the absolute antithesis to its see-and-be-seen coastal neighbour.

For city romance From the weeping willows and paper lanterns of the historic Gion district to serene manicured gardens...

20. Kyoto, Japan

For city romance

From the weeping willows and paper lanterns of the historic Gion district to serene, manicured gardens and tinkling temple bells, Kyoto is a completely charming urban retreat. The antithesis of frenetic, futuristic Tokyo, it’s an immersion into the romance of a bygone Japan. And that romance really ramps up when you take a boat ride along the Oi River, where city streets are slowly transposed with misty, wooded hills.

Where to stay: At Hoshinoya , a singularly elegant ryokan group. Though the newer Tokyo version recently won a place in our Hot List, it’s at the Kyoto outpost that you’ll find the distinctive grace and tranquillity of Japan distilled. Moss-covered paths curve around sculpted maples and cedars; guest pavilions are exactingly designed, with sliding paper screens opening onto peaceful forest views. Better yet, bathrooms have deep, cypress tubs, with seasonal herbs provided to infuse your soak.

Botswana

21. Botswana, Africa

For getting up-close with nature

To see Africa at its beguiling best, head to Botswana. The government here has put sustainability at its heart, shunning a revolving door tourism model in favour of low-volume, high-value stays. It’s a brilliant ploy to prevent the country’s precious national parks from becoming overrun, and in turn, Botswana has become one of the most exclusive spots for a safari – perhaps best known for epic wildlife-spotting opportunities and plum stays in some of Africa’s finest and most intimate lodges. Sure, you might not tick off all of the Big Five while you’re here, but instead of sitting in a bottleneck of 4x4s, you can cruise silently through the Okavango Delta’s network of waterways in a dugout canoe, or quadbike across the arid wilderness of the Makgadikgadi salt pans. There’s something utterly hallucinatory about the silence and seclusion; serene hot air balloon rides stand in for gas-guzzling helicopter flights, while nights in billowing white tents are paired with G&Ts around firepits and sleepouts with your lover under the starry skies.

Where to stay: A little oasis in the middle of the Kalahari Desert,  Jack’s Camp  is one of Botswana’s smartest places to stay, and the camp’s mahogany furniture and four-poster beds smack of old-world glamour. If you prefer something a little more modern,  Xigera Lodge  is an ultra-sustainable, off-grid choice – and it's filled to the brim with specially-commissioned works from exciting young African artists. Most importantly, it’s so vast you’d never know you weren’t the only guests. If you’re seeking a bucket-list honeymoon, this is it.

Tokyo gets all the noise, but Kyoto is for lovers. Known as Japan’s most romantic city, the historic and cultural capital of this most fascinating nation is a picture-postcard city of classical Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, traditional wooden houses and imperial gardens. The food is incredible, the people are magnificent, the atmosphere is spellbinding. What more could you want from a couples getaway? The city has become something of a hotspot for proposals, and it isn’t hard to understand why. Prep the knee!

2.  St Lucia

St Lucia

If chocolate is an aphrodisiac, romance is guaranteed to blossom in  St Lucia . Cacao is so abundant here that it grows by the roadside. The island is home to Hotel Chocolat’s cocoa plantations, and its hotel, Boucan, has a chocolate-themed spa and bean-to-bar experiences. It helps that St Lucia is gorgeous, with two distinctive peaks—the Pitons—crowning one of the lushest landscapes in the Caribbean. Hotels like Jade Mountain set the bar for views and romance, but couples will equally love St Lucia’s legendary rum-fuelled street parties.

3.  Rocky Mountains, Canada

Rocky Mountains, Canada

Find the right train and all our old-fashioned, romantic notions of rail travel become justified. The route we’d pick carves through  Canada ’s Rocky Mountains around  Banff ,  Jasper  and Lake Louise, on the Rocky Mountaineer. This is no ordinary train: viewing carriages have windows that span from the ceiling to seats so that it truly feels like you’re among the wilderness. There are four different routes taking a minimum of one to four days. Expect frothy rivers, towering spruce, glacial lakes and perhaps the occasional bear.

4.  Provence, France

Provence, France

Artistic luminaries of the 19 th and 20 th centuries were clear on the romantic appeal of Provence. Cézanne was a native of the region, but it also lured Picasso, Monet and Van Gogh with its lavender fields, pavement cafes and attractive light. From the sweeping bridge of Avignon to the glamour of Nice and cobbled squares of Aix-en-Provence – there’s enough eye-candy in this southern swathe of France to make even the most hardened realist swoon.

5.  Prague, Czech Republic

Prague, Czech Republic

The City of a Hundred Spires seems to have been built with love in mind. That can be the only takeaway for couples looking over the Czech capital from the viewpoint at Letna Hill, a beer in one hand and beloved in the other. Prague is a postcard city of stories, a famous old wonder that has long been a favourite of couples looking for a romantic getaway and for good reason. The Old Town gets most of the attention, but don’t be afraid to explore further afield either; each district has its own unique take on romance, from the modern stylings of Karlin to the grandeur of Vinohrady and beyond. Prague lives up to the hype, and then some.

6.  Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires, Argentina

The country that invented tango is guaranteed to get every couple’s pulse racing. Dance aficionados head for the  milongas  (dance halls) of San Telmo in  Buenos Aires  for steamy nights pressed close together. After a few days soaking in the bohemian vibe and late-night bars of BA’s oldest neighbourhood, we recommend allocating time for wine tours in Mendoza and a posh eco-lodge in the remote heart of Patagonia,  Argentina .

7.  Marrakech & Essaouira, Morocco

Marrakech & Essaouira, Morocco

Despite its unfortunate reputation for hassle,  Marrakech  remains the stuff of Arabian Nights fantasies. Its sand-coloured streets are a gloriously intoxicating whirlwind, and there’s nothing quite as arresting as the call to prayer in this city of a thousand rooftops. We recommend splurging on a sumptuous palace hotel or medina riad with a decadent spa (many of which are still remarkably good value). Afterwards, retreat to the whitewashed coastal town of Essaouira for a peaceful wind-down by crashing waves.

8.  Santorini, Greece

Santorini, Greece

The calling card of this popular island in  Greece  is its famous sunsets. Blue-and-white villages trickle-down stark mountains saluting the sea, with dozens of hotel and bar terraces positioned for the chink of champagne glasses as the sun sinks. Many accommodation options are designed for maximum privacy, some have private plunge pools, and several are adults-only.  Santorini  gets crazy busy in summer, but that’s no biggie if you can afford your own little slice of the horizon.

9.  Iceland

Iceland

Iceland can feel like another world, a world filled with all the best bits of nature, from thrilling geysers to moon-like craters and more. A bit like love, right? Okay, there might not be geysers and craters in love, but you get the point. A romantic holiday to Iceland is something of a bucket list item for couples who visit in search of that very unique atmosphere. It doesn’t get more special than the staggering light show of the Aurora Borealis, an achingly gorgeous experience that everyone should seek out at least once in their lives. The eccentric side of capital Reykjavik is plenty romantic in its own right.

10.  Palawan, Philippines

Palawan, Philippines

Beach bums and lovers of the life aquatic can satisfy all their desert-island fantasies in Palawan. It’s a large archipelagic province of the Philippines (the easiest way to get here is to fly from Manila) characterised by virgin rainforest, limestone karst cliffs and unrivalled sands. Below water, there’s WWII shipwreck diving and cities of coral. Forget Thailand: rumour has it that Palawan’s Bacuit Archipelago was the real inspiration for Alex Garland’s The Beach . The author lived in El Nido for six months.

11.  South Island, New Zealand

South Island, New Zealand

There’s something undeniably dreamy about the prospect of waking up somewhere different every day. If you and your partner are adventurers at heart, you’ll love campervanning through New Zealand ’s dramatic southern island. Just the two of you and the open road, with mountains, fjords and lakes to gawp at. There are hundreds of camping grounds to choose from, many in remote, beautiful locations.

12.  Rajasthan, India

Rajasthan, India

Ok, so  India  isn’t everyone’s idea of romance. But Rajasthan is something special, and it’s still a destination where unique experiences and luxury are a relative bargain. You can roam abandoned forts and decorated palaces with their sumptuous harems, take desert camel rides, track tigers at dawn, and bed down in magical old maharaja digs with a G&T poured by a butler. Hire a car with a driver to make it stress-free; it’s surprisingly affordable.

1. Verona, Italy

Italy is definitely one of the most romantic places to travel in the world. But while most flock to Venice, Rome , and Milan , we have some other recommendations for the couples out there.

Not only is Verona easily accessible from Venice or Milan, but it is the charming destination we've all been waiting for. It's actually known for being the home to the story of Romeo and Juliet, and you can even visit Juliet's balcony!

If that doesn't sell you enough on the idea, head to Castel San Peitro for sunset, where you can have the most romantic view.

Just 45 minutes outside of Ayia Napa, we stayed at an incredibly romantic hotel called Athenio . It's family run, has delicous food, and is beautifully lit at night for a truly romantic evening.

Move over Paris, we found one of the most romantic places in the world, and it's just a few hours west of France's capital.

Etretat is a small coastal town with beautiful gardens, giant cliffs, and a handful of beaches to explore. But what makes it super romantic are the views at sunset from the top of the cliffs.

There is even a secret cave that has a window with views of the beach down below. Head there for sunset and grab a bottle of wine and some cheese for a truly romantic evening with your significant other.

6. La Gomera, the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are some of the most beautiful and diverse islands in the world! While we love all of them, we particularly choose La Gomera as one of the most romantic places to travel in the world because of its special unique experiences.

We traveled the island by van, and every morning the sunrises were simply magical, with incredible views of El Teide Volcano in Tenerife. We cozied up in the van at night, but were ready to hit the beaches during the day.

THe best part though? There is an exclusive cave inside a resort that you can rent out for lunch or dinner. Your food and drinks are delivered via a cable, so you can enjoy a romantic dinner together. There is even a bed included! Talk about adding a bit of spice to your trip.

Lake Bled truly feels like your stepping into a fairytale, and is one of the most romantic places to travel in the world for the nature lovers out there.

10. Lofoten Islands

The Lofoten Islands are some of the most grorgeous islands on Earth, and for us was one of the most romantic destinations in the world.

Visit in the summer and you'll be able to experience 24 hours of sunlight, charming fishing villages, and some of the most gorgeous hikes we have ever experienced, which are particularly romantic to spend sunset to sunrise (it never gets dark).

Visit in the winter time, and you'll have an incredible shot at seeing the northern lights. Cozy up in a cute red cabin, sip hot chocolate, and enjoy the sky dancing with colors.

11. Tbilisi, Georgia

Tbilisi just may be one of the most underrated capitals in Europe, and it's perfect for a romantic getaway.

Georgia has amazing comfort food and wine, affordable glamping experiences, and quirky architecture. But what we particularly love about Tbilisi is the area of thermal baths right in the city center.

We spent our anniversary in Tbilisi, and Fede took me to the most famous Spa in town (Orbeliani). There is a special private room that they set up with music, massage beds, and a pool to enjoy, making it a great place for a special romantic occasion.

The Most Romantic Places to Travel in the World: North America

While we personally think Europe is full of many more romantic places to travel in the world, the Americas also have some notable places we believe are perfect for a quick romantic getaway.

12. St Augustine, Florida

So many people flock to Florida for romantic getaways, but this town is so much more than just a quick beach weekend (although it does have a beach too!).

St Augustine is the oldest registered city in the entire country, and is also one of the most charming. Not only that, but from mid November until January the historic town has "night of lights", when the entire city is draped with lights, making it even more magical for couples to enjoy.

For a super romantic local stay, we recommend Lions and Lanterns, which is run by a local Josie who creates incredibly stunning rooms to rent her guests.

13. Guanajuato, Mexico

Guanajuato may just be one of the most underrated destination in Mexico. While most flock to the beaches of Mexico, this city boasts vibrant colors, and is made of over 1,000 alleys!

Join a callejoneada (a musical walking tour), roam the quaint streets, or even stay in a castle for the night! Like Verona, Guanajuato also features a balcony with a tragic love story, just like Romeo and Juliet.

Guanajuato is the enchanting European city of Mexico, and definitely was one of the most romantic places in the world we've traveled to.

14. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Just an hour and a half away from Guanajuato is another charming city in Mexico that is super romantic.

San Miguel de Allende is known for its large pink Disney-looking cathedral, its stunning architecture, and a really romantic spa in town.

For a bonus, you can also stay in a hotel filled with suns! It's honestly one of the cutest hotels we came across in Mexico.

Just 90 minutes outside Montreal is one of the most unique accommodation experiences, where you can sleep amongst the wolves!

In a beautiful glass cabin you can cozy up while experiencing these furry friends just outside your door. Th epark itself has a lot to offer, and staying here (especially in the winter) makes it one of the most romantic places to travel in the world.

But the real reason we chose this area for one of the most romantic places to travel in the world? It's because of the nearby hot spring waterfall .

Soak in steamy waters with your partner and watch the sunset together with this uniuque location in El Salvador. Looking for more romantic spots? Relax at the resort in Mizata, or explore the black sand beach with cliffs surrounding it in Shalpa.

The Most Romantic Places to Travel in the World: The Middle East

When people imagine romantic places to travel in the world, they typically don't think of the Middle East as being a prime destination. However, we've visited quite a few places that we recommend for couples! Here are a few of our top choices.

28. Wadi Rum, Jordan

Located in the south of Jordan, this desert is full of otherworldly landscapes, and also some of the most romantic glamping sites in the world.

Watch the sunrise on the dunes, sip tea with the locals, ride camels at sunset, and watch the sky fill with stars at night. Wadi Rum is a truly magical place, and one we'll always cherish.

We particularly recommend staying in one of the domes at Memories Aicha Luxury Camp , as this is one of the most beautiful glamping sites we have ever seen!

29. Al Ain, UAE

While most people flock to Dubai or Abu Dhabi, we found the most romantic place in the UAE to be Al Ain.

Al Ain is full of charming forts, museums, and local desert town vibes. But what truly makes Al Ain romantic is the awesome desert resort we stayed at, Telal Resort , which has an oasis next to it, a spa, and a pool that lit up beautifully at night.

30. Socotra, Yemen

I've been a bit hesitant to add Bali to this list, as I know it is not a hotspot for digital nomads and expats. It's definitely changed drastically since the last time I went (2017), but nevertheless has some stunning natural landscapes.

Bali has some of the most breathtaking waterfalls in the world, beautiful beaches, and definitely the best villas you could ever imagine. It's budget friendly, tropical, and has anything a couple could ask for a romantic getaway.

With waves of multi-colored hues against the night sky, the Northern Lights take you into the heavens for a near spiritual experience. Also called the aurora borealis, the phenomenon occurs when the sun’s energized particles collide with the earth’s upper atmosphere, sometimes as fast as 45 million mph. When that happens, our planet’s magnetic field provides a shield and then diverts the particles toward the poles.

The result is an otherworldly display of colorful ribbons, swirls, and diffusions, bringing the galaxies down to earth. Viewing a natural phenomenon like that puts things in perspective, making you realize how small you are and how big the universe is.

15 Fantastic and Easy Day Trips From Moscow

Is the hustle and bustle of Moscow starting to wear you down? No worries. There are multiple great day trips from Moscow that will let you see a different side of Russia that you won’t find in the metropolitan area. Each day trip I’ve listed below can easily be done by train from Moscow, and there are trains every day of the week.

The area surrounding Moscow is rich in cultural attractions and natural beauty. By traveling only a short distance, one feels far away from the crowds, and lines of the sprawling Russian capital. Since Russia is undoubtedly an expansive country it may take from half an hour to two hours to reach some of the landmarks on this list (by train or car) from the Moscow city center.

You can escape to the picturesque Russian countryside, visit war memorials, battlefields, admire onion-domed churches, and get insight into the local way of life. Easy day trips from Moscow include the incomparable white-stone Trinity Cathedral in Sergiyev Posad, the spectacular Cathedral of the Assumption in Dmitrov, and the Russian military aircraft in Monino. For those who love rural tranquility, Suzdal and Vladimir are a must-see. History buffs will appreciate the Patriotic War of 1812 reenactment that took place in Borodino on the first weekend of September.

Without further ado, here are 15 best day trips from Moscow that are well worth your attention.

The Best Day Trips from Moscow

There’s a reason Moscow is one of Europe’s most enigmatic destinations. It’s got culture, class, food, history, and more, but even better, is that it is the country’s main transport hub with so many attractions within a day trip from Moscow. While you can definitely spend days or even weeks in Moscow, it can, of course, be done in just one week. What can you do in Moscow in seven days ? Well, you can do a lot if you know how to plan a trip to a place you know so little about.

If you’re ready to get out of the city a bit and soak up the culture, fresh air, and enchanting architecture, I’ve rounded up my favorite day trips outside of Moscow. I often get asked: What are the best cities to visit in Russia? And these are places that I’ve been and loved.

My Favorite Easy Day Trips from Moscow:

Dmitrov Kolomna Zvenigorod Sergiyev Posad Yaroslavl Arkhangelskoye Estate Vladimir Suzdal Korolev Borodino Patriot Park in Kubinka Melikhovo Gorki Leninskie Kaluga Monino

1. Day Trip to Dmitrov from Moscow

Dmitrov may not be as popular as other cities in Russia, but the fact that the city was founded only 7 years earlier than Moscow makes for a great day trip. This small city some 90 kilometers from Moscow is particularly beautiful in the summer. As you walk the streets you can see sparkling fountains, charming centuries-old buildings, yachts and boats transiting through the canal and, of course, the Museum-Reserve Dmitrov Kremlin.

The Kremlin (castle) is the city’s main draw. The 10m high and about 1km long earthen rampart remained behind the wooden wall and gives an idea of how the castle looked like 400 years ago. The oldest surviving building on the Kremlin grounds is the 16th-century Assumption Cathedral with a unique five-tier iconostasis.

places to visit near moscow by train

Not far from the Kremlin there is a compact 15th-century Borisoglebsky convent. Its main building – the 16th-century Cathedral of Sts. Boris and Gleb is open to the visitors only for services of worship. In the 1930s in the convent housed a labor camp, which contained the builders of the Canal named after Moscow.

Getting There: Dmitrov sits an easy hour and sixteen minutes by train from Savyelovskiy Rail Terminal. This cheap day trip from Moscow is a great chance to soak up the historic charm to be found in Moscow Oblast.

2. Day Trip to Kolomna from Moscow

Situated to the south-east of Moscow, Kolomna is a beautiful port city on the Oka River. This is one of the oldest Russian cities in the region. So you can discover the old history in museums and monasteries. Interestingly, the city was a site for important weapon factories under the Soviet Union. Although it was opened up in 1994 Kolomna is not as popular as other day-trip destinations in the region.

Nevertheless, it is a great place to visit with friends and family where you can explore the 15th-century Kremlin made of red brick, try incredibly sweet traditional pastila (marshmallow), and visit some of the cute little churches and 19th-century mansions.

Getting There: Take the express train (commuter line train) from the Kazansky rail terminal to Golutvin station. The trip lasts one hour and forty minutes.

3. Day Trip to Zvenigorod from Moscow

This one is usually a given due to its proximity to and ease of transport from Moscow. It’s one of the easiest day trips from Moscow by train. You can easily hop on the train from the city and land right in the town of Zvenigorod where you can visit the 14th-century Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and sample the sparkly and refreshing kvass, a Russian specialty beverage that’s enjoyed in the summer months.

Zvenigorod is an adorable little town just under an hour away from the Moscow city and is an amazing place to visit as it will give a relaxing break from the hectic life of Moscow. Check this day trip if you don’t feel like planning.

If you have a sweet tooth, spend some time in the quirky Museum of Russian Desserts, where you can indulge in uniquely delicious treats and explore the intersection of food and culture.

Then you may want to pay the Zvenigorod Museum of History, Architecture, and Art a visit. The museum’s exposition is located on the territory of the Savvino-Storozhevsky monastery, or rather, in the 17th-century Tsaritsyny chambers, built for the wife of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. Stroll through the museum halls to view the permanent exhibitions, which offer insights into various aspects of Russian history. The intricate museum’s building is adorned with a decorative porch, complex patterned elements, and looks very impressive in general.

4. Day Trip to Sergiyev Posad from Moscow

If you’re looking for cheap day trips from Moscow, Sergiyev Posad is a good choice at just a few dollar train ride away. Known as a major center of pilgrimage and home to one of the largest Russian Orthodox Monastery which has been here for hundreds of years, Sergiyev Posad is a fun day trip from Moscow and can be combined with Abramtsevo Museum Estate. As the only town in Moscow Region which is included in the Golden Ring of Russian cities, Sergiyev Posad is an incredible destination for a day trip from Moscow that packs UNESCO-protected Trinity Sergius Lavra, great museums, and gorgeous architecture into one day.

Make sure you see the six-pillared Assumption Cathedral that was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in mid-16th-century and go inside to marvel at the impressive iconostasis that features Simon Ushakov’s masterpiece, the icon of Last Supper. Enjoy a delicious lamb steak with wheat kasha, Ukha fish soup, or hand-made dumplings as you learn a lot about religious and cultural history.

Getting There: Known for its small-town charm and welcoming feel, you can get to Sergiyev Posad by train, by bus, or by car. Trains depart from Yaroslavsky Rail Terminal every thirty minutes, and the trip lasts about an hour and a half. Alternatively, you can hop on a bus at the ‘VDNKh’ metro station. A bus trip to Sergiyev Posad takes two hours on average but can be reached in 90 minutes depending on traffic. If you go by car expect to spend about an hour and a half attempting to traverse the congested Yaroslavskoye highway.

5. Day Trip to Yaroslavl from Moscow

Going from Moscow to Yaroslavl may seem like a really long day trip, but honestly, if you take the comfortable train, it only takes about four hours to reach the city, so making a Yaroslavl day trip is totally doable. Although I do recommend much more than one day in Yaroslavl, especially if it’s your first time.

Cultural tourists visiting Yaroslavl should start their exploration by strolling the historic city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A spacious 100-hectare area enclosed by Sobinova and Republican streets is home to most popular attractions – the 17th-century Church of Elijah the Prophet that survived almost exactly in its original form, and in contrast to it, the white stone Assumption Cathedral, restored in the 2000s.

golden ring russia

If you walk a bit further passing the Holy Trinity sculpture and city’s foundation stone, you will find yourself at Strelka, a park on the cape, which offers panoramic views of the spot at the confluence of Volga and Kotorosl rivers. On the way back, there is a pleasant walk along the picturesque Volga embankment to the Governor’s Garden with shadowy alleys and an open-air Sculpture museum.

Getting There: Yaroslavl is about 280 km (173 miles) northeast of Moscow, so the best way to get there is to take a morning train from Yaroslavskiy Rail Terminal. A tour is also a great way to see the Yaroslavl without having to worry about driving or searching for trains. You can book a tour here.

6. Day Trip to Arkhangelskoye Estate from Moscow

Situated on the outskirts of Moscow and dates back to the late 18th-century, Arkhangelskoye Estate was the domain of the nobility for over a century until the Russian Revolution swept people who owned the estate out of the country. The estate was turned into a museum, which it remains today.

cities close to moscow worth visiting

The Arkhangelskoye Estate Museum holds the largest rare-book collection. The exhibition also includes old manuscripts, historical documents, photos from the past, a vast collection of sculpture, paintings, engravings, and exceptional examples of decorative art. These art objects once belonged to Prince Nikolai Yusupov, the former owner of the estate.

train trips from moscow

Arkhangelskoye Estate is often referred to as the Russian version of Versailles because of the intricately manicured garden and beautiful 18th-century park. Famous Russian writers and poets such as Pushkin, Herzen, Mayakovsky loved to spend their free time here making long excursions in the surrounding area. Arkhangelskoye is a perfect place to appreciate the terraces decorated by delightful statues, exquisite vases, and busts.

Visitors can take tours, which introduce them to vibrant examples of Russian art and culture.

Getting There: To reach the estate it’s best to take a bus or a privately-owned minibus that departs from Tushinskaya metro station.

7. Day Trip to Vladimir from Moscow

Situated only two hours east of Moscow, Vladimir is absolutely one of the best places to visit near Moscow for a day trip. This splendid city dates back to the 12th century and has a very rich history. If magnificent Orthodox cathedrals and traditional white-stone architecture entice you, then this place is perfect for a day trip with your significant other.

First things first, you need to see the Golden Gate, which indicates the entrance into the old town. This 12th-century medieval masterpiece of military architecture is associated not only with Vladimir but with the Golden Ring tourist route itself. At the top of the gate, where once was the Church of the Deposition of the Robe, there is the Museum of Weapons. Great looking arrowheads and spear points date back to the Grand Principality of Vladimir, while the exhibition in an impressively majestic setting features a number of Batu-Khan related artifacts.

There’s a variety of attractions to put on your must-see list: the Old Believers Trinity Church right behind it, the Cathedral of St Demetrius, and Dormition (Uspensky) Cathedral. If you plan on shopping for souvenirs like birch-bark masterpieces of Kunov’s masters, drawings, carving, embossing, figures of people and animals, stop by the Lacquer Miniature, the Museum of Crystal, and the Gingerbread Museum. Many of the local attractions were added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites.

Getting There: The best way to visit this area is to catch an early train from Moscow and book a full-day tour of Vladimir in advance. This one includes the town of Suzdal as well.

8. Day Trip to Suzdal from Moscow

This gem of a little medieval town perched on a hill just a 30-minute ride from Vladimir is one of those places I’ve visited and could move there permanently and be happy! It’s a charming little piece of history that also has a Kremlin and visiting it feels like stepping back in time. if you’re a culture enthusiast you’ll be glad to know there are numerous churches, five monasteries, including Spaso-Yevfimiev Monastery in Suzdal. Check them out if you want to get a real taste of the country!

cheap day trips from moscow

pend some time shopping at the Torgovaya ploshchad (Market Square), where you can buy baskets made of birch bark, ceramic handmade plates, honey or souvenirs and, of course, grab some afternoon tea!

Getting There: Trains leave regularly from Moscow’s Kurskiy Rail Terminal to Vladimir where you can hop on a bus to Suzdal. You can also take a bus from Moscow. In this case, it might take longer and you’ll probably encounter infamous traffic jams. If you go by express train the trip takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes. There are slower trains of course, but I’d recommend going with the fast one and save a lot of time!

9. Day Trip to Korolev from Moscow

Located some 30 kilometers northeast of Moscow, Korolev has become arguably the most important space research center with skilled workers from across the Soviet Union who came here to expand the space program.

It became a leading institute dedicated to aerospace research in the country. Today, that tendency can still be clearly seen on the streets and in the buildings. When the Soviet Union collapsed, the city retained its status as the headquarters of Russia’s space surveillance network and now it hosts the Russian Mission Control Center, an analogue of the American Mission Control Center at NASA’s Space Center in Houston.

If you want to learn more about Mission Control Center and the former Russian Mir space station, book a tour with a knowledgeable guide who can clearly tell the history of this place.

If you’re not into space exploration there is also a Memorial Apartment Museum of Marina Tsvetaeva in Bolshevo. With a picturesque park next to the museum, it’s a great place for walking in the fresh air. The highlight of the park is memorial stones with quotes from Tsvetaeva’s poems.

Getting There: I’d recommend going by train. Catch one at Yaroslavskiy Rail Terminal that departs every 30 minutes to reach Bolshevo station.

10. Day Trip to Borodino from Moscow

The historic Battle of Borodino on September 7, 1812, took place just outside the small village of Borodino, about 140 km west of Moscow, and about 15 km from the nearest town of Mozhaysk. Although the French won the Battle of Borodino and went to capture Moscow, it was one of the bloodiest battles of the pre-twentieth-century that is also predetermined Napoleon’s defeat.

While it was a battlefield back then, not much remains today. It’s mostly a green and grassy field now with a few monuments of military honor, architectural objects dated back to 19th and 20th century, and fortification facilities scattered throughout the area. The largest of these is the 27-meter high obelisk located right at the heart of the former battlefield.

Every year the military and patriotic festival and theatrical performance take place in Borodino. Early September is considered to be the best for visiting. But if you just want to feel the spirit of the battle, it’s better to go at any other time of the year.

Getting there: Hop on a train from the Belorussky rail terminal, disembark in Mozhaysk, and then take a bus to the museum. The whole travel time is about 2 hours.

11. Day Trip to Patriot Park in Kubinka from Moscow

Once a Red Army tank training ground, now it’s a military Disneyland with history, structure, guns, and armored vehicles! The tank museum originally housed one of the world’s largest and rarest collections of tanks. In 2016 they combined the training grounds with the newly-created Patriot Park. Since then, some of the notable and rare items have been moved to the Patriot Park site, so you may want to combine both sites into one tour (only about 20 minutes apart).

best places to travel from moscow

The exhibition grounds include some very rare specimens that are must-see for any military enthusiasts out there. The staff is friendly, helpful and kind, while the museum has a small shop. As this site is part of an operating military base, they may ask you to show your passport, or provide them with a photocopy of the front pages. There are vending machines for snacks and drinks, and there are bathroom facilities. There’s plenty to see, so I recommend setting aside an entire day!

Getting there: Situated halfway between Borodino and Moscow, the best way to reach Patriot Park in Kubinka is by car. Alternatively, if you don’t want to rent one, consider car-sharing apps like Gett or UBER. The price of ride-sharing services is cheap enough to make them a viable proposition for choosing them.

12. Day Trip to Melikhovo from Moscow

Located some 80 km from Moscow, Melikhovo is one of the most important museums dedicated to Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. This renowned Russian writer and playwright acquired Melikhovo in 1892. He lived there with his parents and close relatives for 7 years before moving to the Crimea in 1899. Melikhovo is where he wrote his plays “The Man in the Case” and “The Seagull”.

The estate faded into oblivion right after the Revolution but in 1939 Anton Chekhov’s sister Maria and his nephew established a museum based on Chekhov’s place of living. The museum opened its doors to the public in 1941.

Today museum’s exhibition reveals the legacy of a celebrated writer and shows his path not only as a writer but as a doctor and public figure as well. The collection also features some of the best-known paintings by famous artists like Isaac Levitan and Vasily Polenov, who were Chekhov’s friends. When it comes to fun and educational day trips from Moscow, Melikhovo is a nice place for learning more about Chekov’s life and work.

Getting There: You can reach Melikhovo by train from Kurskiy rail Terminal. Disembark in the town of Chekhov and hop on a minibus that will get to the estate. Alternatively, hop on a bus that departs from the Yuzhnaya metro station.

13. Day Trip to Gorki Leninskie from Moscow

Once the realm of Russian nobles, Gorki Leninskie was turned into Lenin’s museum some 25 years after his death. The estate sits some 30-minute bus ride from the Domodedovskaya metro station and houses Soviet-era memorabilia and Lenin’s memorial flat recently transferred from the Kremlin, as well as his vintage Rolls-Royce.

Most people only associate this place with the name of the first communist leader. In fact, the name of the estate was first mentioned in documents dating back to the 16th-century. Throughout its history, the estate was owned by a number of prominent figures. It’s in fact one of the best museums that holds the country’s finest collection 19th-century furnishings and a unique collection of domestic items owned by nobles. Plus, ancient Vyatichi native tribe or East Slavs who inhabited a part of the Oka basin’s burial mounds and a few notable sculptures are hidden behind the avenues of lime trees in the park.

Getting There: You could, of course, hop on a bus from Domodedovskaya metro station. But it would be much easier just to use UBER or Gett. The estate isn’t that far from the Moscow Circle Road but going there by bus may involve some navigating.

14. Day Trip to Kaluga from Moscow

If you’re looking for an educational day trip from Moscow, look no farther than Kaluga! This beautiful city could really entertain you for more than just a day, but to get a taste of science, be sure to visit the Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics. Or in other words, the Space Museum.

Visitors to the museum will learn more about the history of space exploration. In fact, this is one of the largest Space Museums in Russia, which opened its doors in Kaluga in 1967. Here you can see a prototype of the iconic MIR space station and a duplicate of the Voskhod rocket. The very same rocket that took the first man to space. There’s also a planetarium, which from the outside resembles a spaceship.

Kaluga is a totally walkable city. Make sure to spend some time strolling Teatralnaya street with the authentic 19th-century pavement that now marks the Kilometer Zero. Then walk across the 18th-century Kamenniy Most (the Stone Bridge) that somewhat resembles a Roman aqueduct. If you’re an architecture buff marvel at the Church of St. Cosmas and Damian.

It is assumed that the church was erected by one of the followers of Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1794. The church resembles the Smolny Convent in St. Petersburg. With five church towers directed upward and six tiers of oblong windows give the exterior a sense of lightness and airiness.

Getting There: Trains from Kiyevsky Rail Terminal to Kaluga leave every 90 minutes. The trip takes about 2 hours and 35 minutes.

15. Day Trip to Monino from Moscow

Are you looking for great family & kid-friendly day trips from Moscow? If so, consider visiting the Central Museum of the Air Forces at Monino. This unique military open-air museum is home to over 180 Russian aircraft and 100 aircraft engines and the perfect place to go when your crowd is looking for a break from hectic city life. Check this tour if you don’t feel like planning.

things to do outside of moscow

This site was formerly an operational airbase from 1932 till 1956 and many of the Russian aviation Design bureaus have made a contribution to the operation and maintenance of the museum. Along with aircraft from the Second World War, there are the TU-95 Bear four-engine turboprop-powered strategic bomber and the TU-144 Charger a Soviet supersonic passenger airliner (which resembled the Concorde). The museum also has exhibits related to military aviation history such as the uniform of captured U2 pilot Gary Powers.

Getting There: This museum is located at Monino Town, about 30 km from Moscow. It is open on all days from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except Mondays and Tuesdays. To get there take a train departing from Yaroslavskiy Rail Terminal and disembark at Monino station. Alternatively, hop on a bus from Schelkovskaya or Partizanskaya metro station.

Final Thoughts on the Best Day Trips from Moscow

I hope this post has helped you discover some amazing day trips from Moscow. From imposing cathedrals, mighty fortresses and monasteries, there are a lot of incredible places to visit the Russian capital, and the best part is that getting there is always ways to get around on the cheap.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery near Moscow

No comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Religion , Travel

The Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery is a very picturesque Orthodox monastery of the Moscow diocese, founded in 1398 and located 2 km west of the city of Zvenigorod in Moscow Oblast , about 60 km west of Moscow .

In the 15th-17th centuries, the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery played the role of an outpost of the Moscow Principality in the west. The monastery was a favorite place of prayer for many Russian tsars. The Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery on Google Maps . Photos by: Alexandr Lipilin .

The Zvenigorodsky tract was laid from Moscow to the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was also known as the Tsar’s Way, on which all Russian rulers made mandatory pilgrimages to the monastery. In the first half of the 20th century, this road was called Zvenigorodsky highway. Today, it is better known as Rublevo-Uspenskoe highway.

During the Soviet years, the monastery housed various institutions: military units, a sanatorium, and a museum. In 1995, the monastery was revived. Today, 30 monks and novices live here. Exhibitions of the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural, and Art Museum are also located here.
