James May has spoken out about a recent car crash he was in, insisting he is “perfectly OK” after the smash.

On Saturday, it was reported the Grand Tour host had been taken to hospital after a high-speed crash.

According to The Sun , James was filming a challenge for the Amazon Prime Video show with co-stars Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond that saw them driving along a tunnel towards a rock wall at a Norwegian naval base.

James was claimed to be driving at 75 miles per hour when he jackknifed into a wall after he allegedly put his brakes on later than required.

The paper reported he was given a brain scan and suffered a broken rib after being taken to hospital.

James has since addressed the incident on Twitter, revealing it happened a while ago and was “not that bad”.

Thank you for all your kind comments and funny jokes re my crash, but it was a while back, not that bad, and I’m perfectly OK. Apologies to Evo fans for binning the VIII. #Bellend — James May (@MrJamesMay) August 13, 2022

He tweeted: “Thank you for all your kind comments and funny jokes re my crash, but it was a while back, not that bad, and I’m perfectly OK.

“Apologies to Evo fans for binning the VIII. #Bellend.”

He also told one follower he’d “made a cock-up and destroyed” the car in the accident.

After leaving the BBC’s Top Gear in 2015, Clarkson, Hammond and May have hosted three regular series of The Grand Tour, as well as a host of feature-length specials.

A fifth special has reportedly already completed filming, with a sixth currently in the works.

The Grand Tour is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Rimac Reveals Additional Details About Richard Hammond’s Crash While Filming ‘The Grand Tour’

By Rob Stumpf

Updated on Jun 29, 2017 10:35 AM EDT

3 minute read

In a recent interview on Drive Tribe , Richard Hammond sat down with CEO of Rimac, Mate Rimac, to discuss the elephant in the room – the Rimac Concept One that was totaled with The Grand Tour host behind the wheel . In the 26 minute interview, Rimac and Hammond dissect his crash and go over some specifics of the crash.

After a successful three runs, Hammond had one more run to make with the Rimac. Jokingly, he even put out the idea that this would be the run where he crashed (something he tends to do fairly regularly ). As predicted, when Hammond reached the top of the hill, the rear-end of the electric supercar slid out and caused the Rimac to fall onto the road underneath. The car proceeded to roll for around 110 meters (360 feet), narrowly missing a house thanks to the curvature of the surrounding landscape.

And also I was aware that the car was taking just such a beating. I mean if you look at those craters, that’s a big hole that’s just impact and it looks like the thing has been dropped from space to leave a whole that big. So yeah I was probably going ‘well this is it’. In fact that is what was going through my mind. I thought ‘I’ve had it’. Richard  Hammond

One might wonder how Mate Rimac feel about this crash; after all, any person would hate to see their hard work destroyed. Surprisingly, his first takeaway is just how safe the car was, despite the severity of the crash. Rimac considers his organization a technology company, not necessarily an auto manufacturer. One that started with just 6 people and has since grown to around 250 – the company builds technology for petrolheads, by petroheads. The Concept One’s goal was not meant to be efficient by going all-electric, rather because it was the best powerplant for the idea that Rimac felt would be right for the company.

With nearly 1,100 horsepower , the Concept One is fast. Four motors couple to four gearboxes and apply torque vectoring to the wheels over 100 times per second. It even allows for selectable front, rear, and all-wheel-drive configurations. Hammond might simply not have been ready for the technology of the torque vectoring coupled with the sheer torque produced by the vehicle.

Rimac believes that Hammond may have simply been going too fast to provide adequate braking into the corner. During the first run, Richard reached a top speed of 145 km/h before reaching the problem corner. On his last run, a maximum speed of 177 km/h (110mph) was reached. Fortunately for the other seven Concept One owners, the value of their cars just went up. Rimac brought in a customer car for this trial – not one of their own. And what makes matters worse, Mate Rimac states that his company will not be manufacturing a replacement.

Good news for all who want to see the Rimac perform its hill climb, though. Hammond states that they will not be scrapping the piece, as they have enough footage to finish the bit to include in the next season of The Grand Tour.

Here's What Happened In Richard Hammond's Terrifying Supercar Wreck

Other than host reactions and a short clip of what happened , we haven’t gotten much information on The Grand Tour host Richard Hammond’s huge, fiery crash during filming . But Hammond recently sat down to give the details, saying the crash “was like being in a tumble dryer full of bricks going down a hill.”

Suggested Reading

The crash happened earlier in June, when Hammond and co-host James May were out filming runs on the Hemberg Hill Climb in Switzerland. Hammond was in the Rimac Concept One electric supercar, and crashed off the top of the hill after his last run of the day.

Related Content

After flying through the air and rolling, crews got Hammond out of the car just before it burst into flames. Host Jeremy Clarkson later said he “genuinely thought” Hammond was dead when he saw the wreckage. Hammond got an airlift to the hospital, where he let everyone know he wasn’t dead and got major work done to his busted knee. Meanwhile, the FIA was worried about its reputation .

In the weeks since the crash, we really haven’t gotten many details on what happened. But in a video posted to DriveTribe on Tuesday, Hammond and Rimac CEO Mate Rimac gave a full 26-minute breakdown of the events leading up to the crash and the terrifying wreck itself.

The video can’t be embedded, but can be seen here .

If you’re trying to sneakily keep up with the car news at work or just can’t make the time for a 26-minute video, we’ll give you a quick summary. Hammond and Rimac sat down with diagrams of the course and the wreckage, saying that the Hemberg Hill Climb has an altitude increase of 157 meters from start to finish.

The filming included three supercars: an old-school gas-powered Lamborghini, the hybrid Acura NSX and the electric Rimac. A director asked Hammond and May to make another run on the hill climb at the end of the day, and Hammond joked back more than once that he knew this would be the one they wrecked on.

And he did.

Hammond went off of the course past the finish line, meaning he had a long tumble down the hill afterward. Crash data showed Hammond flew around 30 meters, hit another road and kept rolling for about another 100 meters. There were three houses along the way, but the car’s path curved and missed them.

What the car didn’t miss was the ground, where the two talked about how it left “many” craters during its tumble. Aware that the car had to drop in elevation after he drove off the side of the hill, Hammond said in the moment, he thought he was going to die. Hammond also knew the car was taking a beating, and said it looked “like the thing ha[d] been dropped from space.”

But other than his knee, Hammond didn’t get too much of a beating. He said despite a lot of rolling and the car having a small clearance above his head, the noggin stayed pretty intact throughout the wreck. Hammond asked the crews at the scene to drag him out of the car by his arms because he thought he broke his leg, and then he wound up at the hospital.

As miraculous as a minor injury in a major wreck sounds, Hammond’s daughter wasn’t so impressed with his survival skills. When he got back from the hospital stay and showed her his bandages, Hammond said she responded with, “Daddy, you look like you’ve fallen over in the playground.”

Ouch, in more ways than one.

Hat tip to Stephen!

‘Brutal’ fallout from James May’s horror crash revealed – and what it means for future of The Grand Tour

THE Grand Tour's boss has revealed the 'brutal' fallout from James May's horror crash - and what it means for the future of the show.

Fans of the Amazon Prime Video series will soon get to watch the new special, The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick.

The Grand Tour's boss has revealed the 'brutal' fall out from James May's horrifying accident

It sees presenters James, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond driving rally cars across remote areas of Norway in extreme winter conditions.

However, one of the first challenges sees James, 59, slam his rally car - a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 - into a wall and require hospital treatment.

The show's Executive Producer Andy Wilman - who previously produced Top Gear when the trio were its presenters - has revealed what happened in the moment after the accident and how it impacted the show so early on in the production.

He told The Sun Online: "James, after the crash, he had pain, we thought 'alright, he must have done some ribs or something'.

The Grand Tour's James May reveals surprising truth behind weight

"And he was talking OK so then it's [thinking about] concussion but then there's nothing you can do until you've done the scan on that, so we figured we might be out by a day.

"At that point, with Richard and Jeremy, they'll carry on filming and James can rejoin, whether it's one day or two days, as it happens it ended up being a day and a night.

"We just adapt that, it sounds brutal, there's an accident we're still filming, we can't sit around his bed giving him grapes, we've got to move on, if he's fine."

Andy added that the bigger issue was the car James had chosen, as it was badly damaged on impact and the team "didn't know if it would run again", which would be a big let down with so much of the show still to shoot.

He said: "That was so badly banged up, it was in the garage and the mechanic went 'this car is a complete write off', so I had to give him a bit of a Winston Churchill speech about getting things going again and mended, which they did."

Despite James' injuries, Andy insists that everyone involved is always aware that there's an element of risk to the show, and so it won't make them change anything for future episodes.

He explained: "Long term do we think about changing things? No we don't because we go along knowing there's risk, and then it's just about mitigating it.

"So we won't look at this film and then go, 'right this is telling us something', we just wouldn't do that."

Richard Hammond’s Rimac Concept One crash in detail

accident the grand tour

I can’t recall a time where I felt so anxious to be watching an episode of The Grand Tour , or even Top Gear , as I was when I watched the opening episode of The Grand Tour Series 2. My heart was truly in my mouth as I watched Richard Hammond thundering up the hill in the all-electric Rimac, carrying the weight of Croatia’s pride on his shoulders.

The accident was every bit as shocking as we expected it to be, but unfortunately there were no cameras present at the crash location to cover the incident and some questions have been left unanswered. What caused the crash exactly? And was Hammond or the Rimac at fault?

Back in July, Hammond sat down with Rimac CEO Mate Rimac to discuss the incident on DRIVETRIBE . But, unfortunately again, the video came across as being mostly an advertisement for Rimac – perhaps something the manufacturer was owed following the incineration of one of their US$980,000 Concept One supercar.

Speaking of the accident, Hammond said: “The last run of the day, at the top just over the finishing line… [the back end] got away from me and I went over the edge. There’s a slight right and a left, and as I went ’round the left the back end stepped away.”

But what caused the back end to step out as Hammond went around the left-hand turn? And didn’t this happen quite some distance after the finish line? To investigate this further, we first need to look at the course map of the Bergrennen Hemberg hill climb itself.

accident the grand tour

From the start location at the bottom of the valley, the 1,758-metre course winds its way up the hill to the finish line located a few hundred metres from the town itself. It is important to note that the finish line has been positioned along a relatively straight piece of road, providing plenty of space for racers to slow down upon completing the course.

accident the grand tour

Despite this, Hammond’s Rimac managed to leave the road approximately 200 metres after the finish line, immediately following the right and left turns which you can see on the map above. The vehicle left the road sideways, travelling at approximately 130 km/h (80 mph).

Mr Rimac suggested to Hammond: “You were running out of road, you were going too fast, so you wanted to get through the corner anyway.”

“What happened there in my opinion.. you have two inputs – the steering and the brake and the throttle pedal,” Rimac added. “This is what you [use] to tell the car this is where I want to go and this is what I want to do. So when you do this [turn the steering wheel left] it says ‘okay, you want me to go there’ , but there is not enough road and it will rotate the car more than the tyres can handle.”

Here’s what we see: After crossing the finish line, Hammond’s Rimac appears to continue accelerating (or at the very least does not slow down dramatically) until it reaches the right turn. As it enters the right turn, the rear end steps out and the car begins to over-steer / slide to the right. Hammond most likely counter-steered into the slide, but as the car regained grip, it snapped violently to the left and left the road sideways.

accident the grand tour

Hammond never mentioned the rear end stepping out as he entered this first right turn, yet the tyre marks left on the road clearly show this is the case. So what caused this to happen?

accident the grand tour

For one reason or another, whether it be brain fade or poor judgement, Hammond appears to continue at race-pace after crossing the finish line and didn’t lift off the accelerator until he reached the entry to the right-hand turn (‘A). As he entered the right turn, he suddenly realised his predicament and lifted off the accelerator before applying the brakes – unsettling the car and unwittingly creating a state of lift-off over-steer due to the forward weight transfer (‘B’).

Hammond would have panicked at this point (perhaps when he is heard saying “CRAP!” in the episode audio) and attempted to steer left – counter-steering into the slide – in an effort to stay on the road. But the Rimac was still travelling too quickly at this point, and as the car stopped over-steering and regained grip, it snapped violently across to the left and exited the track sideways (‘C’).

accident the grand tour

Had he succeeded, Hammond would have unwittingly achieved a move which would have been remarkably similar to a ‘Scandinavian flick’ or an ‘Inertia drift’ – but he entered the turn far too quickly, and as a result, maintaining control from that point onward was pretty much impossible. It was the forward weight transfer that unsettled the rear end, and caused an otherwise under-steery car like the Rimac to bite and bite hard.

accident the grand tour

Despite all of this visual evidence, at no point has Hammond ever admitted to going too fast, or forgetting to slow down after crossing the finish line – but James May alluded to this in the second episode of The Grand Tour series 2. May pointed out that they missed a train in the New York to Niagra Falls challenge because Hammond “doesn’t know how to slow down when it says ‘finish’ across the road” . Yikes.

The evidence against Hammond is even more damning when you consider the Rimac requires just 31.5 metres of braking distance to come to a complete stop from 100 km/h. So how fast would it need to be going to require more than 200 metres to stop, or at least slow down enough to take those turns safely?

I believe that there was issue with the car dynamics there had to be but under contractual agreement he could not say anything about the crash that could paint the Rimac in a negative light

' src=

I just hope he was all rite.

' src=

The little idiot is still accelerating after the finish line. He should pay for the car out of his own pocket the bloody goose.

' src=

What was Hammond’s time compared to the other two cars of his compatriots when they did the hill climb?

' src=

ok off the top I am of the opinion that Richard overcooked it … how ever Mario’s thoughts struck a note with me. would this ” torque vectoring be a similar system to the one used by say Subaru for instance? the reason I ask is that on an Alberta back road here in Canada the late May /June rains made for an unusual driving experience for me. at 90 mph I could definitely feel the various wheels exchange the power around. the road has a 2 inch layer of dry gravel with a thick mud base and when you break through the top layer you hit this slick mud. the little sub was really wagging its tail and not at all happy. faster would have meant a spin at some point. [note : the prairies are very flat ; all this happened in a [fairly] straight line…] is it possible that Richard got a little help from a ‘confused torque vectoring system’ ?

' src=

Vectoring system gone haywire, Hammond ask why Rimak’s car was all day understeer and on that moment oversteer” and Rimak repeatedly ignored to answer … similar problem like when Koenigsegg One:1 crash at Nurburgring record attempt, small companies don’t have experience or funds to make a lot of testing miles so they fail at simpliest problems like 15U$ chinese ABS sensor on One:1 or probably also some prosaic problem on Rimak vectoring system …

' src=

Hard to believe though – torque vectoring is all about the distribution of power to each of the four wheels. If you’re not on the power it has nothing to do.

' src=

the speed of the Remic at 130 kms phr has a stoping point with its brakes of 180 metres, kindly regards Martyn.

We’re having a hard time believing that – a regular hatchback performs better than that. Happy to eat my words if you can provide evidence though.

'The Grand Tour' host Richard Hammond injured in car crash

Richard Hammond, a presenter of Amazon's car-themed TV show "The Grand Tour," escaped serious injury Saturday in a fiery crash while filming in Switzerland.

Program-makers said Hammond was airlifted to hospital with a fractured knee. The Rimac Concept One electric supercar was reduced to a twisted, blackened mess after it crashed and caught fire.

The program said in a statement that Hammond crashed after completing a climb during a demonstration run at the Hemberg hill race in the east of the alpine country.

"Richard was conscious and talking, and climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames," it said. "He was flown by air ambulance to hospital in St. Gallen to be checked over, revealing a fracture to his knee."

The show said no one else was involved, and the cause of the crash was under investigation.

Hammond, 47, hosts the adrenaline-fueled automotive show with Jeremy Clarkson and James May. The trio are the former hosts of the BBC program "Top Gear."

Clarkson tweeted that "it was the biggest crash I've ever seen and the most frightening but incredibly, and thankfully, Richard seems to be mostly OK."

Gian Andrea Rezzoli, a spokesman for St. Gallen cantonal (state) police, confirmed that a person had been injured and taken to a hospital, but referred further questions to the race organizers as the crash happened on a cordoned-off racetrack.

A spokesman for the Hemberg race organizers, Marco Moser, said the demonstration runs are intended to showcase unusual vehicles and offer spectators "something special."

"No accident is nice for us," Moser said. "But accidents do happen in high-risk sports. Of course when a car goes up in flames, then there's quite a bit more adrenaline."

"We're happy that Richard Hammond is doing well, under the circumstances," he added.

In 2006, Hammond suffered a brain injury when he crashed in a rocket-powered dragster while filming "Top Gear." He had been attempting to break the British land speed record at an airfield when the vehicle veered of the track, tumbled over and plowed into the grass.

He recovered and returned to the show a few months later.

Hammond and May left "Top Gear" after Clarkson was fired for punching a producer in a dustup during filming. The trio signed with Amazon for "The Grand Tour," which is filming its second season.

Tour de France Femmes stage 7 report

Bonjour and welcome to Cyclingnews ' live coverage of the final stage of the 2024 Tour de France Femmes!

So the final stage of the 2024 Tour de France Femmes is finally upon us and a mouthwatering first meeting with Alpe d'Huez awaits the peloton today.

The 150km-long day starts out in yesterday's finish destination of Le Grand-Bornand,  taking in the Col de Tamié (9.5km at 4%), and then the Col du Glandon (19.7km at 7.2%) before reaching Alpe d'Huez (13.8km at 8.1%).

After an enthralling week, here's how the standings look with one stage left to race.

Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) holds the yellow jersey by a matter of 27 seconds to Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck), with French rising talent and stage 6 winner Cédrine Kerbaol (Ceratizit-WNT) a further 10 seconds in arrears.

Defending champion Demi Vollering (SD-Worx-Protime) sits 1:19 behind Niewiadoma after a crash on stage 5 , which lost her both time and the maillot jaune.

From the riders looking to tackle the stage head-on, to those not riding at all.

There are three non-starters for the eighth and final stage:

Marit Raaijmakers, Barbara Malcotti (Human Powered Health) and Josie Talbot (Cofidis).

For an in-depth insight into the 150km-long parcours awaiting the peloton today, check out our stage 8 preview here .

The riders are going through the sign-on and team presentation process in Le Grand-Bornard.

A penny for the thoughts of Demi Vollering today.

Meanwhile, it seems like the yellow jersey isn't going to be given up without a fight.

With all the sign-ons done and dusted, the riders are heading for the neutralised start.

The flag drop is expected to be roughly 15 minutes from now.

The green points jersey is a much more clear-cut affair than the GC battle, with Marianne Vos (Visma Lease-a-Bike) sitting already beyond reach on 170.

The second place in that classification is Niewiadoma, who has almost half as many points, 86.

Just 45 points are up for grabs today, so as long as the Dutchwoman stays on her bike and inside the time cut, she'll win the green jersey for a second time (2022).

149.9km to go

And the flag is dropped for the final time in this year's Tour de France Femmes.

Amber Kraak of FDJ-Suez has wasted no time in getting up the road.

Not to be for Kraak, as she's reeled in soon after.

With the mountains ahead, arranging a breakaway that everyone can agree on might take some time.

Is it a surprise that plenty of riders want to get up the road today, though?

Not only is a stage win at the Tour de France Femmes up for grabs but so is having one of Alpe d'Huez's hairpin bends named after you.

Read more: A chance to make history on Alpe d'Huez - Évita Muzic applauds decision to dedicate bend after stage 8 winner at Tour de France Femmes

While the peloton decides who can and who can't head up the road, let's remind ourselves how yesterday's stage went .

On the first of two mountainous days, AG Insurance-Soudal Team's Justine Ghekiere was part of the day's early break that managed to hold off the bunch. The 28-year-old went solo from 13.5km out and arrived 1:15 ahead of second-place Maëva Squiban (Arkéa-B&B Hotels).

It also means that Ghekiere, after an efficient breakaway performance, sits top of the Queen of the Mountain standings by 16 points to Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Deceuninck).

It's almost like she knew we were talking about her!

Justine Ghekiere has attacked off the front for a second day running.

The Belgian is clearly keen to scoop up those QOM points coming up shortly.

Ghekiere isn't alone though, it looks to be a pretty sizeable group pushing on.

While we work out who made the break, we should probably tell you about the first categorised climb of the day.

The Col de Tamié is 9.7km in length, with an average gradient of 4%.

The size of the group looking to push on is causing it some trouble, with some teams clearly not wanting the elastic to snap.

We're still unclear of the make-up of the leading group, but we do know they've managed to get clear now. A 30-second advantage as they head up the Col de Tamié.

There's a 23-rider group out in front, with 4 of the SD-Worx-Protime team in there. We'll list off the full contingent shortly.

The 22-rider group with over a minute on the peloton consists of:

Mischa Bredewold, Lorena Wiebes, Christine Majerus, Blanka Vas (SD-Worx-Protime), Franziska Koch (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), Lucinda Brand (Lidl-Trek), Justine Ghekiere (AG Insurance-Soudal Team), Loes Adegeest (FDJ-Suez), Riejanne Markus, Fem Van Empel (Visma Lease-a-Bike), Silke Smulders (Liv AlUla Jayco), Alice Maria Arzuffi (Ceratizit-WNT), Kristen Faulkner, Noemi Rüegg (EF-Oatly-Cannondale), Liane Lippert, Olivia Baril (Movistar), Silvia Persico, Erica Magnaldi (UAE Team ADQ), Camille Fahy, Célia Le Mouel (St Michel-Mavic-Auber93), Katerine Aalerud and Mie Bjørndal Ottestad (Uno-X Mobility).

Three non-starters become four as Movistar confirm that Sheyla Gutiérrez didn't take to the start this afternoon due to COVID-19.

Just 3km to the summit of the Col de Tamié.

SD-Worx-Protime showing their gameplan for today right from the off, with four riders already up the road.

Justine Ghekiere will be looking to strengthen her grip on the polka dot jersey shortly.

The break are continuing to build an advantage. They're now 1:40 ahead.

It's a wet and windy day in the French Alps.

QOM (Col de Tamié)

Unsurprisingly, Ghekiere takes the maximum five points available on the Col de Tamié. She's followed over the top by Bredewold, Majerus and Adegeest.

The bunch have cut the gap back down to 1:15 on the descent.

We're back down into the valley, with flat roads (including an intermediate sprint) for the next 40km.

The gap has stretched out once more, with 2:30 between the leading group and the bunch now.

Justine Ghekiere (+1:27) is the biggest threat to the overall standings from today's break, with her currently sitting in the virtual lead.

The classification leaders at start line earlier. The only jersey we've yet to mention so far is the maillot blanc, otherwise known as the young rider's white jersey.

Puck Pieterse currently leads the way by 0:45 over Lidl-Trek's Shirin van Anrooij. Third-placed Marion Bunel (St Michel-Mavic-Auber93) is five minutes further back, so it'll almost certainly be a Dutch rider taking home the jersey tonight.

Less than 10km to go until the intermediate sprint in Aiguebelle.

A Brutal Crash and a French Victory in the Tour de France Femmes

John waechter | aug 17, 2024.

Blanka Vas

Stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes blew up in a crash that significantly changed the dynamic of the race. The Tour de France Femmes’ return to the world stage in 2022 has highlighted women’s cycling, and this year’s Tour has supercharged the sport with exciting and competitive racing.

Demi Vollering, the defending race champion, entered Stage 5 sporting the Yellow Jersey, but was entangled in the crash and lost valuable time to the new Maillot Jaune Kasia Niewiadoma.

The 2024 Tour de France Femmes runs from August 12-18. The race began in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and will finish on the iconic Alpe D’Huez, France. The Alpe D’Huez represents the toughest final stage to the Tour de France Femmes in its three-year history.

Stage 5: Bastogne to Amnéville (93.2-miles) - Rolling terrain with five categorized climbs.

American Kristen Faulkner nearly repeated her Olympic success in Stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes while leading a blazing finish. Blanka Vas (SD Worx-Protime) overtook Faulkner, and three others, in the final seconds to capture the stage in electrifying fashion. She narrowly beat Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM), Liane Lippert (Movistar Team), and Faulkner (EF-Oatly-Cannondale) in the sprint of a group that survived a brutal crash just six kilometers from the finish line.

Faulkner initiated an explosive sprint in the final kilometer attempting to repeat Olympic glory, but Vas would not allow it.

The consequential pile-up engulfed the maillot jaune, Demi Vollering, who lost 1:47 and the GC lead to Niewiadoma – a devastating curse of bad luck. The stage belonged to a delighted Niewiadoma .

“It’s crazy, I still can’t believe it. I really did not expect this today because I felt so bad during the race. Lorena Wiebes said to me, ‘believe in yourself’, and it helped me a lot. My radio was not working, so I did not know what happened at the back. Demi crashed, so we lost yellow, that’s a shame, and now I have mixed feelings,” said the stage winner.

In the last kilometre, Faulkner attacked to anticipate a sprint, almost a copy of the final in the Olympics – but this time, Vas quickly closed the gap.

“In the final, I was like, ‘I cannot let Faulkner go’, because I did the same mistake in the Olympics. I was suffering so much, but I knew if I survive this small climb, then maybe I can win. The Olympics gave me a lot of confidence because I was racing in the front, so I know if I have a good day, I can be in the front,” Vas said.

Stage 6: Remiremont to Morteau (99.4-miles) - The first major mountain stage with over 2,200 meters of climbing.

France prevailed in a historic Stage 6. For the first time since the Tour de France Femmes was revived in 2022, a French rider took a stage win. Cédrine Kerbaol, just 23 years-old, engineered an a solo attack 14.5 kilometers from the finish line to seal a stunning victory. Kasia Niewiadoma retained the yellow jersey, which she will take into the Tour’s final, mountainous weekend to conclude the prestigious race.

The penultimate Stage 7 awaits. The 103.4-mile (166.4 kilometers) stage gains close to 10,000 ft. of vertical, marking the first true test of climbing and the effects of altitude.

Tour Race Director, Marion Rouse, described Stage 7: “The longest stage of this 2024 edition will begin with a number of smallish hurdles, plus the long haul up the Col de la Croix de la Serra (12km at 5.1%), from the Saint-Claude side. It concludes with a new and steep finish at Chinaillon (7km, 5.1%), an authentic hamlet with traditional chalets on the flanks of the Col de la Colombière.”

And, it only gets tougher with Stage 8, when the tour concludes on the grueling slopes of Alpe d’Huez to conclude the Tour.

4 family members killed after suspected street race resulted in fiery crash in Texas

Four family members driving on a road in Grand Prairie, Texas, were killed in a crash after being struck by a man participating in a suspected street race.

The incident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. According to a press release from the Grand Prairie Police Department, detectives believe the driver of a red Dodge Charger, identified as 20-year-old Jaime Mesa, "was traveling at a high rate of speed" when racing with another individual in a white vehicle.

While traveling down a road and turning left, a Chevy Traverse SUV collided with the red Dodge Charger. Three people inside the SUV died at the scene, while two others were transported to the hospital, where a fourth victim passed away. The fifth victim was in critical condition, according to police and an online fundraiser for the family.

Mesa was also taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. He was charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of racing on a highway causing serious bodily injury, four counts of manslaughter, and four counts of racing on a highway causing death.

Anthony Morales, the 22-year-old driver of the white vehicle who fled the area after the crash, was also arrested and charged with one count of racing on a highway causing serious bodily injury and four counts of racing on a highway causing death, per the press release.

Videos obtained by KDFW show debris and a massive fire after the deadly crash.

The victims were identified as members of the Rosales family − the father Jessie, the mother Lorena, and siblings Stephanie and Angel, according to local outlet WFAA, which spoke with a family member.

The fifth victim who survived the crash was 17-year-old Anthony Rosales, who was in critical condition.

A GoFundMe for the victims has raised over $30,500 as of Tuesday afternoon. The online fundraiser is seeking money for the remaining family member, Anthony, as well as funeral services.

"This sweet sibling group has a long hard road ahead of them physically, emotionally, and financially," the fundraiser continued.

Police are investigating the crash. Grand Prairie is about 13 miles from Dallas.

Richard Hammond’s Crash History: All Of His Accidents Revisited From Top Gear To The Grand Tour

Richard Hammond joined Top Gear in 2002 alongside Jeremy Clarkson and Jason Dawe , soon presenting himself to be an excellent choice to push the show into stardom. A year later, Dawe left and we saw the entrance of James May . The rest, as they say, is history. But history likes to repeat itself.

Richard Hammond has crashed over and over again during his time in Top Gear and now The Grand Tour . Now he’s known for it. It’s become a meme, and fans of the shows are even starting to wonder if these accidents are actually written into the show.

Table of Contents

What’s Richard Hammond said about his crashes?

accident the grand tour

Talking to The Times , Richard discussed his first crash in the Vampire Dragster which almost killed him. Instead, he ended up in a coma. He talks about the affects its had on his health later in life:

“When I was initially in recovery, because it was a frontal lobe injury, the doctor said one of the problems is what they call ‘lost-keys syndrome’. “Years later I’d lose my keys and I’d think: it’s because of my brain injury. But, no, I’d just lost my keys. I’m 51. “Now, I regularly go into a room and I can’t remember what I went into it for. But I no longer think: oh god, my brain isn’t working.”

He later admitted that because of his memory loss, he became depressed and found it hard to “connect emotionally”. On top of this, he was later diagnosed with post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) that came about after being unconscious for so long.

Richard Hammond’s Wife Mindy’s Response to his Accidents

Of course, it isn’t just Richard who is affected by these crashes. He has a family that relies on him – his wife Mindy, and two daughters Willow and Isabella.

Mindy was able to retell how she felt after the first incident. Stating that his memory loss was “disconcerting” after he didn’t recognise her as being his wife. She said:

“When I corrected him, he responded: ‘No, you’re not my wife, my wife is French.’ “Indeed, when he was allowed home five weeks later, it became clear that Richard’s memory loss was no short-term affliction.”

She also added that he became increasingly angry afterwards:

“He could feel the anger welling up, and was afraid that he might not be able to control himself. “It must have been utterly terrifying for him.”

She told the Telegraph:

“I tried to shield them from Daddy’s illness as much as I could, limiting their time together, and I avoided giving too much detail about his injury.”

After failing to come to a stop after a hill climb during filming for The Grand Tour Season 2, Hammond and the Rimac Concept One he was driving flew off the side of the hill before hitting the ground shattering his knee.

Mindy later admitted that was on his second strike:

“Three strikes you’re out,” she told interviewers. “You’ve had two goes.”

All Of Richard Hammond’s Crashes:

Drag racing the vampire dragster.

During a 2006 episode of Top Gear, Hammond was set and ready to run at speeds around 288mph. After several runs getting used to the high performance dragster, he was ready to perform his final run. During this run, the front left tyre failed, launching him off of the track. He was airlifted to the closest hospital and treated to brain damage, including being put into an induced coma.

The health and safety report read:

“Hammond’s instantaneous reaction to the tyre blow-out seems to have been that of a competent high performance car driver, namely to brake the car and to try to steer into the skid. “Immediately afterwards he also seems to have followed his training and to have pulled back on the main parachute release lever, thus shutting down the jet engine and also closing the jet and afterburner fuel levers. The main parachute did not have time to deploy before the car ran off the runway.”

Mozambique Motorcycle Accident

The complete details to this accident aren’t known, but during filming of The Grand Tour Season 2 Mozambique Special episode, Hammond fell off a motorcycle and hit his head. Hammond assured he was fine, but Clarkson later admitted that “he really did hurt himself quite badly.”

Rimac Concept_One Hill Climb Crash

Being the most serious crash since his drag car incident, this could have gone a lot worse.

While driving the Croatian-made Rimac Concept_One , the presenter failed to brake for a corner, throwing himself and the car off the side of a Swiss Hill Climb course. Hammond suffered a fractured knee, needing to use crutches for months afterwards. Unfortunately for the car, it came out a bit worse than the driver, bursting into flames and over the days following, burnt to ashes.

He explained the crash at the time:

“So I went over the edge and then it touched down a few times and landed on its roof “The longer the air time I got the harder the landing would be. And sure enough, it was.”

Chinese Hill Climb Crash During Season 3

Hill climb courses and Richard Hammond don’t seem to agree, so of course, when the presenters raced up a make-do hill climb course in China during the sixth episode of Season 3 , Hammond bit the dust once again.

Driving a three-wheeler, he misjudges a corner, flips the small car, and falls down the side of the course. This may have been staged, but despite this, came as a surprise to all of us.

While filming in Poland for the next episode of The Grand Tour, Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond, and James May each took to a track in the city of Poznan as they continued their journey west across the country.

Here, they visited the Tor Poznan race track. But before long, a photo emerged of Richard Hammond standing next to his crashed car with his hands on his hips. James May was stood next to him looking very disappointed in his co-presenter.
