What Makes a Daytona Speedway Tour So Fun

Daytona Speedway Tours are fun, even if you’re not a racing fan. (I’m not, but I love behind-the-scenes tours.) So when I found myself in Daytona Beach, I made sure a Daytona International Speedway Tour was on my itinerary.

Just like speedways differ, so do track tours, and that’s why they’re fun every single time.

Daytona Speedway Tour Highlights

Traveling by tram.

Daytona Speedway Tour tram

No vans, no buses, no close quarters with strangers. You’ll hop on an open-air tram to get from place to place and the fresh breeze is wonderful.

Circling the Track

Daytona Speedway 31 degree banked turn

Trams can’t fly through the course as race cars can, but they will speed along the inside of the track (at a whopping 15 miles per hour). Even at tram speeds, it’s pretty spectacular to be on the official tri-oval speedway with its 31-degree banked turns.

Signing the Finish Line

lady_signing finish line

Grab a sharpie from the tour guide and leave your mark. Your signature will be on the Daytona Speedway finish line “forever and ever.” I left my signature, but I noticed cheeky messages like “Slow Down” and “Ready… Set… Race!” so be as creative as you’d like.

Going Into the Stands

Daytona Speedway stadium (2)

Partway through the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to go into the stands, grab a seat and take in the view from a race-goer’s perspective. It also helps you decide where you want to sit if you purchase tickets to a race.

Fun Fact: The multi-colored seats make the stadium look full at all times to the camera.

Experiencing 31 Degrees of Banking

31 degree banking display

The high banks of the superspeedway enable race cars to reach top speeds. Can you stand up at that angle? Try it and see!

Seeing the Winning DAYTONA 500 Car

race car

Each year, the winning car is displayed in the condition it finished the race. The driver’s helmet and fire suit are also displayed. Be sure to look on both sides… the other side is being held together by duct tape in spots.

Fun Fact: All NASCAR cars use the same body type, but the headlight, taillight, grill, and logo stickers make them appear to be the type of car they’re representing. Why are the lights fake? The tracks are well-lit, so actual headlights aren’t necessary, and stickers are inexpensive, light, and don’t break.

Getting a Peek at the Original Beach Road Course

Also Included in the Tour

race car museum

Along with the highlights mentioned above, the tour also goes along the infield and pit road to the garages and Victory Lane. The tour concludes at the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America Museum, where you can spend as much time as you’d like checking out the galleries.

Be sure to also check out the Bill France and Dale Earnhardt statues outside the building before or after your tour.

Daytona Tour and Speedway Museum

Today we’re in Florida visiting the Daytona International Speedway taking the Daytona tour and visiting the museum.

Daytona entrance at Daytona International Speedway

Daytona Tour

Starting at 9:30 AM every day, the Daytona International Speedway offers guided tours that take visitors all around this historic track. The ticket office opens at 9:00 AM, and once you’ve found the correct ticket window, you’ll be able to purchase tickets for the tour. Prices for the tour are $25 for adults and $20 for children, and the tour lasts approximately one hour.

Turn 4 tunnel at Daytona International Speedway

The tour begins with a journey on a tram-like vehicle, which takes visitors all around the speedway, including a close-up look at the pit road and garages, the famous tri-oval, and the start/finish line. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of drivers and teams preparing for a race. Today we only saw regular people doing the Richard Petty or NASCAR driving experiences, no famous racers!

Your tour guide will provide fascinating insights into the history and operations of the speedway. Whether you’re a seasoned race fan or a newcomer to the sport, you’ll leave the tour with a deeper appreciation for the excitement and dedication that goes into every race at the Daytona International Speedway.

Our first stop is the pit lane and the track entrance.

Daytona Tour Victory Lane

Victory Lane is a legendary location in the world of motorsports. It is the area where winning drivers celebrate after a race. The first Daytona 500 race took place in 1959, and since then, Victory Lane has been the place to be for drivers and fans alike. The celebrations at Victory Lane are always a highlight of the Daytona 500 and other races held at the track.

Victory lane at Daytona International Speedway

Victory Lane at Daytona has seen many memorable moments over the years. In 1979, Richard Petty claimed his record-setting 7th Daytona 500 win, cementing his place in racing history. In 1997, Dale Earnhardt finally won the Daytona 500 after 20 years of trying, creating one of the most emotional and memorable moments in Victory Lane.

None of these moments are more memorable than yours truly posing for a photo.

The view of the winner driver is of these bleachers, filled with photographers, sponsors, and reporters. And thousands of screaming fans along the front stretch.

The Front stretch

Throughout the years, many legendary drivers have crossed the start-finish line first here, including Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt Sr., Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson.

In recent years, the start-finish line at Daytona has undergone some renovations and improvements, including the addition of a new video board and improved seating. These upgrades have enhanced the overall experience for fans and drivers at the track.

Front Stretch at Daytona International Speedway

During a race, the pit road at Daytona is a hive of activity, with teams and drivers making split-second decisions and executing complex pit stop strategies to gain an advantage over their competitors. If you want to watch the action in the pits, you’ve got to sit along the front stretch.

Pit Road at Daytona International Speedway

Any racing fan knows the significance of turn 4 at Daytona. Turn 4 is a 31-degree high-banked turn that requires drivers to navigate at high speeds, often reaching over 200 miles per hour. The banking allows for maximum speed, but also increases the level of difficulty as drivers must navigate the tight turn while keeping their cars under control. The tight conditions make it a prime location for on-track battles and close finishes, adding to the excitement of racing at Daytona.

Turn 4 at Daytona International Speedway

One of the most memorable moments in Daytona’s history took place in this turn during the 2001 Daytona 500 when NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt tragically died in a crash. This event was a turning point for NASCAR and led to significant changes in the sport, including improvements in safety measures for drivers. The death of Dale Earnhardt remains one of the most devastating moments in the history of motorsports, and is a somber reminder of the dangers of high-speed racing.

The tour ends here, so it’s back on the tram and back to the main building. Sadly, due to the race activity on the track, we weren’t allowed to walk onto the track. But they don’t lower the price, you just get less bang for your buck!

Motorsports Hall of Fame and Museum

Located in the Daytona Speedway complex, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MHOF) is a must-visit destination for motorsports enthusiasts and fans of all ages. From the humble beginnings of early automobile racing to the high-speed thrills of modern motorsports, the MHOF showcases the people, machines, and moments that have made a lasting impact on the world of racing.

This is the place to see the previous year’s winning car preserved just as it was sitting in Victory Lane.

A tribute to legends

From drivers and mechanics to designers and engineers, the MHOF enshrines the legends of auto racing, motorcycle racing, drag racing, open-wheel racing, stock car racing, and more. The Hall of Fame’s exhibits feature interactive displays, video presentations, and a wealth of memorabilia, including race-winning cars, iconic helmets, and much more.

Daytona Hall of Fame Museum

Whether you’re a lifelong racing fan or just looking for a fun and educational experience, this is the perfect place to learn about the history of motorsports and discover the stories of the people who made it all possible. With a wide range of interactive displays, hands-on exhibits, and educational programs, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America is the ideal destination for families, school groups, and anyone who wants to learn more about the world of motorsports.

Dale Earnhardt NASCAR at Daytona Museum

After looking at all of these awesome machines, it was time to climb in one for my own photo-op! No need to Dukes of Hazzard yourself into the car, they cut a traditional door into this one.

NASCAR photo at Daytona Speedway Museum

The death of Dale Earnhardt during the 2001 Daytona 500 sparked a wave of changes in NASCAR, particularly in terms of driver safety. One of the major developments was the widespread adoption of the HANS (Head and Neck Support) device, a restraint system that helps reduce the risk of head and neck injury in high-impact crashes. The HANS device was made mandatory for all NASCAR drivers in the aftermath of Earnhardt’s death and has since become standard in motorsports worldwide.

Readers of this blog know I love motorcycles, so I take note here at the Museum when they have motorcycles on display (see also the AMA Museum blog post ).

Ricky Carmichael is considered one of the greatest motocross racers of all time. Carmichael won a total of 15 AMA Supercross and Motocross Championships and was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2019. He is remembered and respected by fans and fellow racers for his impressive skills and competitive spirit.

The Kentucky Kid, Nicky Hayden was the 2006 MotoGP World Champion. Hayden was known for his hard-charging style and fearless attitude on the track. He was highly respected by his peers and fans alike, and his tragic death in 2017 shocked the motorcycle racing community. Despite his untimely passing, Hayden’s legacy lives on and he will always be remembered as one of the greatest American motorcycle racers of all time. The museum displays his 2006 Championship trophy.

The Motorsports Hall of Fame of America honors the legends of motorsports and celebrates the incredible achievements of the individuals who have made a lasting impact on the sport. The main atrium is an overwhelming collection of the machines that have made history.

With its engaging exhibits, interactive displays, and tribute to the legends of the sport, the MHOF is an amazing destination for racing fans and enthusiasts. So if you’re in Daytona Beach, Florida, be sure to pay a visit to this amazing museum and experience the thrill of motorsports history for yourself.

DAYTONA International Speedway Tours in Daytona, Florida

While visiting Daytona Beach earlier this year, we knew there was one stop in the city that boasts the “World’s Most Famous Beach” that we had to go check out…The DAYTONA International Speedway!

Daytona and Racing

What’s the connection to car racing and the famous Daytona beach, you might ask? It all goes back to the turn of the 20th century. There’s a well-known joke around the automotive industry that goes, “When was the first car race? When they built the second car.” This was true well before gigantic racetracks like DAYTONA.

Racing really got it’s start on the hard packed, sandy beaches in Daytona, Florida. The rich and famous would travel from all over to race their automobiles on Daytona’s 23 miles of shoreline.

As vehicles became less of a rich-man’s sport and more accessible to everyone, the desire to raise the bar on the new-found sport was realized in 1959 with the construction of the DAYTONA International Speedway. Now known as the World Center of Racing, the Speedway is a racing lover’s dream come true!

Behind the Scenes at the Speedway

The DAYTONA Speedway offers fans a behind-the-scenes look at everything that it takes to put on a race and offers a taste of what it’s like to be on the racetrack and win the DAYTONA 500. The Speedway offers 3 different types of tours to accommodate a variety of budgets and needs. You can find more information about each of these tours below. We were invited to the All-Access Tour, which was 90 minutes long, and was jam packed with fun and information.

All-Access Tour

Our tour started by entering the main building which had a cafe and fun things to look at. When it was time for our tour, we headed outside to meet our tour guide who was very knowledgeable about the Speedway, as well as the history of racing in general. He was so much fun and absolutely awesome with our kids!

Our 6 year old daughter became his personal helper and he gave her the job of carrying his mic box, which she totally loved and kept her involved in the tour. So sweet! We boarded our tour tramcar and headed off towards the track.

Daytona Speedway Tour

Our tramcar drove us around the entire racetrack while we learned about the history of automotive racing and the Speedway. I had never been to a racetrack before and I was absolutely amazed at just how vertical the racetrack gets near the wall. It’s one thing to hear that it’s a 31 degree bank, but seeing it up close is an entirely different thing!

Next we rode over to the exclusive Fan Zone for a walk through Gatorade Victory Lane for a fun photo op. There are actually 2 extra special photo opportunities on this tour, both of which you are allowed to use your own camera and the professional photographer on-site will take the photos for you at no extra charge. This was such a refreshing change from other tours and things we’ve been on before. Our pics turned out pretty awesome!

Daytona Speedway Pits

Media Deadline Room

The next part of the tour was access to the Media Deadline Room, where journalists from all over the world have come to interview the winners of the DAYTONA 500. This is where your second photo op will take place as you get to sit at the winner’s table. So much fun!

Daytona Speedway Inside the Media Room

Motorsports Hall of Fame of America

Our tour ended at the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America – a massive museum showcasing huge displays from every style and generation of racing. There’s a mock-up of a 1950s era gas station that my youngest had fun playing around in.

Daytona Speedway Museum Amoco Station

These are the descriptions and pricing info for all 3 types of tours offered by the DAYTONA International Speedway. Find one that’s right for you and make it part of your family’s trip to Daytona Beach!

Speedway Tour Climb aboard one of our open-air trams and you will be transported into a world unto itself: the “World Center of Racing.” As you enter the “World Center of Racing”, a flurry of action, color and grandeur will explode before your eyes and you’ll know that you’re on hallowed ground. Experience the 31-degree high banks for yourself as the tram coasts along turns 3 and 4 before finding yourself walking in the footsteps of legends past and present as you climb atop the podium in Gatorade Victory Lane for a photo. End this thirty-minute Speedway Tour by standing next to the car of this year’s DAYTONA 500 champion, left in the same condition as the day it captured the checkered flag. Tips for Visiting Daytona Speedway

  • Arrive early for your tour, especially for the tours that don’t allow advanced ticket sales. You don’t want to arrive just to find that the tours are all sold out for the day.
  • You will be outside for the majority of the tour, so you’ll want to dress appropriately for the weather.
  • Don’t forget the sunscreen! Florida heat is NO JOKE!
  • Bring water! Seriously…you’ll thank me.
  • The tour is not stroller-friendly. If you’ll have really little ones with you, consider baby wearing for this activity. It will make your life so much easier getting on and off the tramcar!
  • There are options for guests with mobility issues. Contact the Speedway office for more info.
  • Don’t forget your camera or smartphone!

Daytona Beach Blog

Visit a shrine that celebrates speed: daytona international speedway.

For decades, hundreds of thousands of people have flocked to Daytona Beach each year to experience the “birthplace of speed.” As the destination where NASCAR got its start and stock car racing became an American tradition, Daytona Beach is often synonymous with racing. And without a doubt, the place to pay homage to racing history and salute its vibrant present is Daytona International Speedway .

Chip Wile, president of Daytona International Speedway, addresses a crowd

“As ‘The World Center of Racing,’ the most prestigious races in motorsports have a stop here,” says Chip Wile, who has served as president of Daytona International Speedway since 2016. “From the Rolex 24 to the DAYTONA 500, everything we do here is the biggest and the best in its discipline.”

And sports-car racing is only the beginning. The Speedway boasts more than 300 event days every year. From go-karts to motorcycles and everything in between, races of all shapes and sizes take place here. In 2019, the Speedway hosted an international professional triathlon, the Challenge DAYTONA Triathlon.

“We always say, ‘If it has wheels, we’ll race it here!’” says Wile.

Countless historic moments have been witnessed at the Speedway, and new favorite family memories continue to take shape here every day. With a variety of Speedway tours that the Speedway offers, you can take part in the experience even if you can’t make it on a race day.

Choose from various tiers of tour options ranging in duration times, cost and features. The Speedway Tour clocks in as the shortest option at 30 minutes long. During this tour, you’ll climb aboard an open-air tram and enjoy a narrated ride on the famous track. Snap a photo at the famous Gatorade Victory Lane, and end the tour standing next to the year’s DAYTONA 500 champion car, which is preserved in the exact condition it was in as it zoomed past the checkered flag.

The 90-minute All-Access Tour offers a rare opportunity for fans to come face-to-face with the finish line they’ve come to know so well, get a close-up view of the pit stalls and unique views of the Speedway from a variety of other vantage points.

A pedestrian bridge across International Speedway Boulevard welcomes visitors

For true fans of motorsports, the VIP Tour is unmatched with three full hours of unprecedented access to the Speedway. Enjoy an intimate look into the past, present and future of the Speedway — from viewing archival treasures to accessing the Coca-Cola Theatre, you’ll end the day an expert on all things motorsports.

At the end of each tour, you’ll be able to take a stroll through the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. The exhibit showcases a wide variety of displays that honor all forms of motorsports, from stock cars to aviation. No matter the size or age of your vacation crew, there’s plenty for all to enjoy.

“The great thing about Daytona International Speedway is that we have something for everyone,” explains Wile. “I’ve seen toddlers looking in awe at the car displays and senior citizens who grew up watching the DAYTONA 500 finally get to see it in person. And with the addition of ONE DAYTONA right across the street, you’ve got a whole day’s worth of activities over here.”

Just one visit to Daytona International Speedway helps a person appreciate and understand how important this place is not only to motorsports, but to all sports.

If you haven’t been to the Speedway for a few years, or came with family when you were just a child, a trip back is well worth it. The Speedway underwent major renovations and improvements from 2013 to 2016, and it is now unlike any other venue in the world. What all has changed?

An aerial view of Daytona International Speedway during the DAYTONA 500

“Everything,” laughs Wile. “Nothing is the same. From the racetrack to the elevators, everything is upgraded. We now have 101,000 wider, more comfortable seats — all with cup holders, improved concourse areas, 40 escalators, Wi-Fi throughout the venue, and the list goes on.”

Of course, one thing that will never change is the singular swell of adrenaline and excitement that sweeps through the crowd during an event.

“It has been the honor of my life to be a part of the Daytona International Speedway team. The men and women I work beside every day are so incredible and talented,” says Wile. “I’ll never forget my very first DAYTONA 500 as president. I stood there, looking up at 101,000 people attending the 59 th running of the race and being so proud. So much goes into it — a lot of hard work from a lot of people — and I was so proud.”

Experience it for yourself! Come witness this place where legends are born — pick up brochures at the Visitor Information Center located inside, book your tour or buy tickets for an upcoming event at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com , and start planning your trip to Daytona Beach today!
