Questions about 2011 Voyager

Hello all, I have been reading through here but it seems there are not many 2011 owners. I have read that there is a heat issue with the Voyager. Also there is some concern about the lean ability before scraping. Finally, the fuel mileage concerns. I am pretty sure I want to trade up from a Suzuki C50T which has been a pain. My daily ride is roughly 36 miles, much of it at 75-80 mph. Would anyone care to comment on the issues about? Thank you, Fred  

The engine does put out a lot of heat. But so do most big engine machines. I have found that wearing leather protects you from the heat. Definitely not a bike for those who want to wear shorts and ride. I don't notice it while moving, but stopped at a light can be an experience if you are not protected. I've had no issues with lean angles. I run the curves at 15 MPH over the recommended "yellow sign" speed for the curves with no issue. Any faster than that and you should be on a Sport Bike. You have to make sure you set up the static sag correctly for your riding weight. You can check my mileage post from yesterday. If you are looking for a bike with great mileage you need to stay away from the large displacement bikes. I might be only averaging just under 37 MPG, but not many other bikes can I sit on for 12 hours and 480 miles in one day.  

Thank you for your input. As far as the mileage, I guess I have less of a concern about the actual mpg as I do with the tank size. If 35mph is the norm and the light comes on at 4.2 gal expended and I travel 36 miles one way to work. I am filling up every two days which can be cumbersome. I was looking at the Concours14 which taught the same mpg but it's tank is bigger. As far as the heat and traffic, I think I am going to seriously need to reconsider this. Have you seen the traffic around DC and Northern Virginia? This stinks. I really like the style. Something else has struck me too since posting this. I have on more than one occasion done the incorrect move of using the front brake in slow tight turns on my C50T. So far I have been lucky to keep it up. I keep reading about how top heavy this thing is and one poster even commented he dumped his doing this. OH THE LEARNING CURVE. Decisions decisions PS: The Concours14 had it's fairings redesigned because of the heat issues.  

If you use your bike for commuting in traffic, the Voyager is not for you. In hot weather when you stop and the fan comes on the heat is unbearable for me even with Kawasaki's modifications to improve it. Although the bike is "water cooled" it only cools the heads, the rest of the engine is air cooled so any modifications to improve it will not be easy or cheap. Yes the bike is top heavy and really shows it at walking speed. Your view on the fuel tank capacity is correct... it's relatively small considering the low MPG. The on board MPG computer is worthless when you run low... it stops giving you the distance to empty. In a nut shell I would not buy a Voyager with your riding needs.

I went from the C50T to the 2010 voyager and love it. So far 11,500 since Sept 2010. My commute is a little longer. I drive 100 miles one way. Most of the riding is 70 or so. Love the Voyager for this type of riding. Just set the cruise and enjoy the ride. I have to agree with previous comments about not being the bike for stop and go traffic. I have been caught in Dallas and it was not fun at all. Snoop  

I would think that any large displacement V-twin is going to be hot in traffic. The rear cylinder is between your legs. Even my Mean Streak (which has nothing to block the wind) will get hot when you are sitting still. As far as top heavy and parking lot speeds. That all depends on your skill level. I have no issues with this bike and mostly use the front brake lever. I do have the ABS model, and I do average 20,000 miles a year on two wheels with only 10 percent of that on interstates. The best large displacement bike I have owned that does a very good job of isolating the rider from the engine heat is the Kawasaki Voyager XII. Plus mine averaged 46 mpg and carried 6 gallons under the seat. Compared to the Voyager 1700 it felt as light as a 750, but accelerated and handled like a sport bike.  

Thank you for the input. I am moving out of the C50T because of a few issues like buzzing in the handlebars, wind turbulence around the helmet, and not enough guts to get out of the way at 70 mph. Other than those three problems, the bike is pretty much a dream. There are supposed fixes for the vibs and buffet but the only way to get power is a different engine. I am now leaning back to the Concours 14. This is rough.  

I have read that Connie also puts out a lot of heat. Of course one's tolerance to heat is very personal. Protecting yourself from heat with the proper gear is important. If I was riding in and around DC I would want a fairly narrow bike with good suspension, brakes, and power. I would also be wearing a dayglo jacket and helmet. I would look at the Versys, BMW 800 series bikes, Triumph Tiger, Yamaha Tenere. BTW: I love my Voyager, and unless some all new bike comes out in the next 3 to 5 years that I just can't live without I will more than likely buy another. I am 5'11" 190lb w/32 inch inseam and this bike is the most comfortable bike I have ever owned. For commuting to work in the middle of summer the Mean Streak is what I will be on so I can get some wind.  

I have a 2011 Voyager ABS and have about 1900 miles on it in less than 4 weeks. At first it did appear to be hot, hotter than the 2009 Venture I traded in. However, after changing the oil over to Rotella T6, it now runs much cooler here in Florida's 85 degrees. I did get to ride in shorts last week in traffic without problems. The bike appears to me that it is well balanced and easy to handle at all speeds. As for gas mileage, well again after going to Rotella T6 the mpg went up about 2mpg. While on I-75 or I-4 at 72 mph I have been getting right at 42 mpg riding 2 up. This has been confirmed by good ole fashion math and did coincide with the computer. While on the 2 lane highway roads at 55 to 65 mph, two up, we get about 44 mpg. I'm happy with that. The bike has plenty of power. I love the fact that I can get it in 6th from about 45mph on and it has a butt load of torque to pass or whatever. The stopping power is unbelievable. Kinda like going from the old non power brakes in a car to the modern power brakes. This did take some time to get a feel for, but I did enjoy my better 1/2 flying into my back during the adjustment period. ;-)

this is a v-twin TOURING BIKE the heat is what it is all v-twins produce heat ask any harley owner and youll discover some will put out more heat the VV!The lean ability I have had crotch rockets before and for a bike this heavy I have no trouble 2up tearin up the curves,Fuel again this is a big Boheamoth and it eats gas just like any V-twin tourer bike does you can expect as low as 34 and as high as 46 depending on all facters,headwind,tailwind,no wind, cheap gas,speeds,roads etc. Sounds like you might be suited to a smaller bike than a VV like an inline v4 kawasaki makes a model thats built more for faster speeds and tighter turns and better gas the name slips me, hopes this helps.I think its the kaw mean streak road my freinds a few times its an awsome little bike!  

"All big bore V twins run hot". Well the VV is no better... maybe worse. The Voyager differs in it has a fan that comes on at 204 degrees F. AND the cooling system is marginal as wbilotta says in his post and the fan comes on A LOT in stop and go traffic and blows that 204F heat right back to your legs. That is a fact you will have to deal with it in stop and go traffic regardless of who says what. The problem is serious and ubiquitous enough thru out the line that Kawasaki created a service bulletin with the addition of a heat shield on the 2009s and installed on all 2010 and above. Did it fix it? Read all the threads about the heat problem and make your own opinion. Honda approached the problem on the Goldwing 1800 by blowing the fan air forward instead of backward. They had a problem with overheated because the radiators where too small. But when they increased the cooling capacity with larger radiators it worked fine. This is what Kawasaki should have done on such a large CC engine.  

ACR Scout - you asked earlier about the Nomad. Traded in a 07 Vulcan 900 on a 09 Nomad about 18 months ago (now almost 10,000 miles). Does it get hot in traffic? This is South Carolina, yes it gets hot. But it is a big Vtwin, don't know any that don't. I chose the Nomad over the Voyager because even though the full fairing gives more protection all year, it add's a lot to the heat issue 9 to 10 months of the year. Basically the same bike, I think either choice would work for most folks looking for a big cruiser. On the positive the Nomad is very comfortable, has all of the lean I ever use, great power, very strong braking when required, and my wife loves riding with me. That is a pretty good combination, and saved a bunch of $$$ over the Harley and Victory bikes I looked at. Added a light bar when I bought the bike, recently added a tach and heated grips (for those few cold mornings). Ride safe!

So.... bought a new out of the crate 2008 Goldwing and after some expensive mods to make it fit me and soften the rear suspension, I absolutely love it. I believe Kawi got sucked into the HD image crap and created issues that make the bike a headache rather than a great ride. IMHO, STAR, HD and Kawasaki are chasing the same bunch of image "drivers" of motorcycles. The wing is quiet and pulls like a turbo-prop aircraft. Where I had to shift the Nomad down to 3rd, the Wing will accelerate in 5th over Laureles Grade road (those who have been to Laguna Seca Races know that road). i live here and ride it several times a week. Hi Fred, I went from a c50 (without a windshield) to the Voyager so I'll share a few observations. It gets hot when you're stopped at lights but it's not unbearable. Over 30 degrees celsius I find i don't get enough air on me (too protected behind the fairing) at anything under 70km/h to keep me as cool as I'd like but then again I usually ride in all the gear (full face helmet, jacket, kevlar jeans, boots). The c50 was buzzy over 110km/h but it was a lot more fun around town. The Voyager is a big heavy slow beast - the c50 was light and nimble and it rocketed up to 100km/h. The Voyager will feel sluggish in comparison. But - put your girl on the back and you won't even know she's there. You have all the power in the world but you're driving a tractor not a zippy sporty bike. I had a mustang seat w/backrest on the c50 and it was great - the voyagers stock seat isn't as comfortable but you won't have any trouble going 200km without a rest. It's really quite comfortable. My partner falls asleep on the back of the bike - she feels secure with the large backrest and is happy cruising anywhere. The bike holds all the extra clothes and gear she likes to take on our trips. Expect your mileage to be better on the voyager, but not significantly. The c50 used to do a pitiful 200km before the light came on. The Voyager will get you closer to 300km on a tank (I have gutted the exhaust which gives me a better range) but it will use a lot more fuel. The c50 felt every bump in the road, whereas the Voyager is a LOT more comfortable. It soaks up those ruts. I get severe buffeting on the Voyager. So does my father who often rides the bike. Most people seem to have no trouble but unless we can get this sorted out, we will have to sell the bike. This will be a real shame because other than the buffeting, it's a ripper bike. All in all - I had more fun on the c50 around town. That was the perfect bike for commuting. But on the open road, the c50 was a challenge. A windshield may have helped but i just spend too much time above 100km/h and with two people the bike just wasn't up to it. Hope this helps a little  

Non-linear power or not, hardly anything can match a Goldwing in power, comfort, nimbleness, etc. etc. Between my wife and I, we have a Valkyrie, '02 Goldwing, and a 2010 Nomad. Although the Nomad is a good bike with plenty of power and electronics, the Goldwing has that and more. The only thing the Wing is lacking is the V-Twin "character", or vibration, or whatever you want to call it. It's great for commuting, cruising, riding twistys and with its 6.6 gallon gas tank, long haul touring.  

Comparing apples to oranges. Wings are great bikes but IMO the Voyager has a better "cool" factor.  

No arguement from me about the Voyager and Nomad having a "cool factor". I was only stating that IMO, the Goldwing has just about the total package....a 900 lb bike that handles like a sportbike! It does have a heat issue too...if someone tries to ride in shorts with their legs resting on the highway bars and that hot air from the Wing's radiators blasting their inner legs (like I did). But I learned quickly!! I took a trip to Tampa, FL last Fall on the Nomad and had a great trip.....39 to 42.5 MPG according to the Kawi "calculator", all the power I needed, and flawless performance. Can't complain about that! But, yeah, comparing bikes often is comparing apples to oranges.....good thing there are many makes and styles to choose from. Of our 3 bikes....Valkyrie, Goldwing, and Nomad, each is different and each shines in its own way.....I'd have a real hard time deciding which one to give up if I had to part with one.  

And I really wanted to buy a wing, but I could not get comfortable on it. The Voyager felt more neutral in the turns. I replaced my '01 I-4 Voyager with the 1700. Jumping back on the XII was like jumping on a sportbike. Of course if my wife held the purse strings you know what I would be riding right now. You can't beat the passenger accomodations of the wing. For me the wing had more power than I would want or need. Same with the new Concours.
